DAILY JOURNAL

I

t’s hard to say which fall from grace was more sudden – football coach Bobby Petrino off that motorcycle in April, or his former team, Arkansas, in the past two weeks. Before Petrino’s fall – literal and figurative – the Razorbacks looked like a top-5 team, with the talent to challenge both Alabama and LSU in the SEC West after finishing 11-2 a year ago. After Petrino’s “inappropriate relationship” with a recently hired aide was found out, of course, he had to go. The question was, did the Razorbacks’ national championship dreams have to leave town, too? Former Louisville and Michigan State coach John L. Smith was brought in as an interim coach-for-hire. Like swapping an Iron Chef for the night cook at Denny’s, but there weren’t a lot of good options at that point. Arkansas started out at No. 10 in the preseason, but an overtime loss to Louisiana-Monroe dropped the Hogs completely |

out of the AP poll. Then came Saturday’s 52-0 loss at home to Alabama. Now it’s possible that if Petrino had stayed JOHN L. on the sidePITTS lines, Arkansas could have survived the loss to injury of quarterback Tyler Wilson in the ULM game. Maybe he doesn’t get hurt at all. But if the Razorbacks quit on Smith – Wilson said some of his teammates did so against the Tide – who’s to say they wouldn’t have quit on Petrino at some point when the going got tough? Now, every remaining team on the Arkansas schedule, having watched the Bama debacle, has to be hungry for a pig roast of their own. A schedule that

looked like it held 10 sure wins suddenly has a lot of potholes – trips to Texas A&M and South Carolina and Starkville, then a regular-season finale with LSU. Could this turn into a meltdown season like the one another former Arkansas coach, Houston Nutt, presided over last season in Oxford? Sixth game of last season: Alabama 52, Ole Miss 7. Next stop, 2-and-10. Yet if Wilson can return to play effectively, and he’s supposed to be ready today, Arkansas can still find its way out of this valley. That Nov. 23 home game against LSU can loom large – a chance for Wilson and Co. to derail the Tigers’ dreams of another trip to the title game. With two SEC losses, there’s no path for LSU to get a BCS rematch with Alabama. And being the spoiler may be all Arkansas has to play for at this point. John L. Pitts (john.pitts@journalinc.com) is sports editor of the Journal.

FIVE GAMES TO WATCH

Oregon State at UCLA: No one thought there would be a must-see Pac-12 game on Sept. 22 between teams that combined to go 9-17 last year. The Beavers and Bruins, though, are undefeated and have already logged huge wins against Big Ten powers Wisconsin and Nebraska. Clemson at Florida State: This showdown between the ACC’s top two teams has loomed since the preseason. These schools, like Alabama and LSU in the SEC West, have separated themselves as the class of the conference as

a result of Coastal Division favorite Virginia Tech’s stunning loss at Pittsburgh. Michigan at Notre Dame: Notre Dame welcomes Michigan to South Bend a week after the Fighting Irish defeated Michigan State in East Lansing. It was Notre Dame’s biggest moment of the Brian Kelly era and the Irish’s first night road win over a top-10 team since defeating South Carolina in 1983. Kansas State at Oklahoma: This used to be one of the biggest North versus South games in the Big 12’s divisional format. Who can forget Kansas

State’s shocking title-game win in 2003? The Big 12 has been pared to 10 teams and has eliminated the conference title game. It almost makes the regular-season stakes even higher. Arizona at Oregon: It’s the Pac-12 game of the week, featuring two of the nation’s most innovative spread-offense masterminds. First-year man Rich Rodriguez has the Wildcats at 3-0 with a win over Oklahoma State. Oregon (3-0) has yet to be tested – but this figures to be the night. Los Angeles Times

Bulldogs’ D back to basics after long night DEPTH CHARTS, 6 KEYS TO THE GAME, 8 BY BRAD LOCKE DAILY JOURNAL

While statistics don’t tell the whole story, it is a bit surprising, perhaps, to see that No. 23 Mississippi State has only four sacks entering today’s game against South Alabama. That total is SOUTH ALABAMA tied for last in the AT MSU SEC – with Tennessee and LSU. The fact that LSU, which has one of the country’s most stout defenses, is down there should indicate how little a single stat can tell you. But MSU has only 13 tackles-for-loss, which is tied for 95th in the country. Sacks and TFLs are two big measuring sticks for defenses, in particular defensive lines. But they’re not the only metrics coaches use when grading their players. “It’s are they doing their job,” head coach Dan Mullen said. “It’s very simple. You’re in a gap-control defense, and are you controlling your gap. If a

run hits, usually someone’s out of their gap, and it’s either a linebacker or a defensive lineman are not in their gap or not controlling their gap or got blocked out of their gap.”

One man expected to make a big difference on MSU’s defensive line is junior college transfer Denico Autry. The defensive end has just one sack and a pair of TFLs on the year and is still trying to settle into his role. DAILY JOURNAL

Rebels hope to get a grip in Superdome DEPTH CHARTS, 7 KEYS TO THE GAME, 8 BY PARRISH ALFORD DAILY JOURNAL

NEW ORLEANS – The Ole Miss offense, dynamic in its first two games, held its own against Texas. The Rebels can OLE MISS take another step AT TULANE forward if they hold on to the ball. Fumbles were a problem against UTEP, but two of those came on special teams. A week later Ole Miss put 31 in the scoring column but left points on the table with three turnovers, all of them interceptions by quarterback Bo Wallace in his third college start. The first one came early, a little more than 5 minutes into the game when Texas linebacker Steve Edmond stepped in front of a Wallace pass and took it 22 yards to the end zone. That’s the start Wallace wants to avoid this morning at Tulane. Edmond’s pick was an example of the Longhorns’ superior speed.

“Pre-snap, I thought I had it, then he just flew out there. As soon as I let it go, I knew it was going to be trouble,” Wallace said. Tulane allowed just 309 yards in a 24-12 loss to Rutgers, but that figure more than doubled when Tulsa put up 651 yards in a 45-10 Tulane loss. The Green Wave ranks No. 92 in pass defense efficiency a 140.88 rating.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

Decision-making was a problem for Wallace and led to two of the picks. Another was the result of the Texas pass rush closing in, a poor throw in which he also had poor mechanics, Wallace said. There was good and bad for Wallace against Texas. He completed 13 of 24 attempts, far lower than the 76 percent completion rate he had against Central Arkansas and UTEP, but he passed for 178 yards – one of them a 75-yard touchdown to Donte Moncrief. Backup quarterback Barry Brunetti got some things done in limited playing time against Texas. He was the

Rebels’ second-leading rusher with only 25 yards but was also 4 for 6 passing for 51 yards. “I think both their quarterbacks are pretty good,” said Tulane coach Curtis Johnson, who coached wide receivers with the New Orleans Saints last year. “(Wallace) is a read-option guy, and he can throw the ball pretty good. The other kid can run. He’s an athletic guy. We’ll have to prepare for both.” Wallace said his focus on mechanics had begun to slip during practice and that led to problems during the game. He planned to pay much closer attention to mechanics this week in practice. Wallace wasn’t pleased with his performance in a 35-point loss to Texas but viewed the game as a learning opportunity. “I’m still a young quarterback. I’ve been in three starts, so getting to play a defense as fast as they were … I learned a lot from it,” he said. “Our next big-time game is Tulane, and hopefully we’ll put up some numbers.” parrish.alford@journalinc.com

FLORIDA ATLANTIC AT NO. 1 ALABAMA

THE BUZZ: The Crimson Tide should not really be tested today, so it’ll be interesting to see how strongly they commit to the possibility of throwing a third consecutive shutout. Alabama has scored 94 unanswered points over a span of 145 minutes. The Owls lost 56-20 to Georgia last week. KEY STAT: Alabama’s first-team offensive line outweighs Florida Atlantic’s No. 1 defensive front by an average of 314-248.

NO. 2 LSU AT AUBURN

THE BUZZ: LSU can stay on track for a third straight No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup against Alabama with a win in its SEC opener. Coach Gene Chizik and Auburn could silence many of their critics by pulling off a big upset after a disappointing start, but QB Kiehl Frazier still doesn’t look comfortable. KEY STAT: LSU has won 24 consecutive games in September and has a nation’s best 16-game regular-season winning streak.

VANDERBILT AT NO. 5 GEORGIA

THE BUZZ: Georgia begins a stretch of seven straight SEC games and simply cannot afford a loss with tougher opponents such as South Carolina and Florida lurking on the schedule. And Bulldogs will look to go 4-0 for the first time since 2008. Vandy coach James Franklin has received plenty of praise for changing his team’s losing attitude, but he still needs a signature league win. KEY STAT: The Commodores haven’t beaten a ranked SEC team since 2008 and they’ve lost 16 of 17 meetings against the Bulldogs.

Scouting report: Ole Miss at Tulane KEYS FOR VICTORY

1. PROTECT THE FOOTBALL Interceptions had not been a problem with Bo Wallace until the Texas game. Part of that was due to the Longhorns’ speed; Wallace won’t face such talent today, but he needs to show the smarts and form that led to five touchdown passes and just one interception – that one off a batted ball as the result of a protection breakdown – in the first two weeks. 2. ACCLIMATE Yes, it’s Tulane. It’s easy to look at this week’s foe as underwhelming, but this is still the first road game for a number of key Ole Miss players including Wallace. The Rebels will have the different experience of indoor football, which could be off-set by the feeling of a home game. Tulane doesn’t draw well, and large numbers of Ole Miss fans usually make this trip.

TOM GILBERT | TULSA WORLD

Rob Kelley is Tulane’s leading rusher, with just 48 net yards on 17 carries.

3. GET IN THE BACKFIELD The Rebels had good success over the first two weeks but couldn’t penetrate the Texas offensive line. After totaling nine sacks and 20 tackles for loss against Central Arkansas and UTEP, the

Rebels had no sacks and just one tackle for loss against Texas. Disrupting the passing game at the point of origin will go a long way in helping a revamped secondary improve its pass defense numbers.

WHAT TO WATCH

WHEN TULANE HAS THE BALL Tulane is definitely a pass-first team. It’s almost a pass-only team, averaging just rushing 7.5 yards a game. That’s not a typo. Less than 10 yards a game on the ground for the Green Wave. That ranks last in the nation, as you might expect. Tulane is better in passing offense, ranking No. 83 and averaging 212 yards a game. Quarterback Ryan Griffin is nursing a sore shoulder and did not practice early in the week. He completed 21 of 30 attempts against the Rebels two years ago, mostly short stuff adding up to 203 passing yards. Grant is averaging 109.5 receiving yards a game. That leads Conference USA and ranks ninth nationally. WHEN OLE MISS HAS THE BALL Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace and his favorite target, Donte Moncrief, have connected

on a touchdown play of at least 50 yards in each of the first three games. The Rebels will try to exploit a secondary that has a true freshman starting at one corner. Ole Miss tailback Jeff Scott is averaging 103 rushing yards in his two games played. While Randall Mackey has not had the break-out game at running back that many expected, the Rebels have still been effective on the ground, including 170 yards against Texas. Tulane is near the bottom in run defense, giving up 257.5 yards a game, No. 116 nationally.

CRUCIAL MATCHUP

TULANE QUARTERBACKS VS. OLE MISS SECONDARY Tulane has been one-dimensional on offense, and even that dimension hasn’t been very good. While Tulane is last in the NCAA in rushing, it is No. 83 in passing. That doesn’t sound imposing, but the Rebels haven’t clamped down on a quarterback yet. Opponents are passing with a 74 percent completion rate. Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze responded to the Texas game with open competition for jobs at cornerback and to give freshman Trae Elston his first start today at safety. Parrish Alford

Scouting report: South Alabama at Mississippi State KEYS FOR VICTORY

1. DON’T GET BURNED AGAIN. South Alabama runs a spread offense very similar to that of Troy’s, and the Trojans burned MSU last week for 572 yards. Troy has more experience and athletes than USA, but the scheme itself clearly gave the Bulldogs some trouble. Players and coaches blamed a lack of focus and missed tackles, and they felt those problems would be easily fixed during practices the past week. Quarterback Tyler Russell called the Troy game a “wake-up call,” while linebacker Cam Lawrence called it a “kick to the butt.” Defensive tackle Josh Boyd said MSU was “playing down” to Troy’s level, something MSU has shown a tendency to do in the past.

season, and except for last week his receivers have been reliable. There was nothing wrong with the run game last week, and the offensive line did a great job opening gaping holes for LaDarius Perkins (179 yards) and the other running backs. Expect State to get several people involved today, as is usually the case.

CRUCIAL MATCHUP

MSU INTERIOR OL VS. USA INTERIOR DL The Jaguars are a bit undersized here, with starters Andy Dalgleish and Montavious Williams both listed at 6-foot-2, 285 pounds. Golden Eagles’ defense faces another tough test and passed for 160 yards. The player to watch for is junior running back Antonio Andrews, who leads the team in rushing, is second in receiving and is their main kickoff and punt returner. Senior quarterback Kawaun Jakes will look for fellow senior Jack Doyle, who leads the team in receiving as the starting tight end.

SPECIAL TO THE JOURNAL

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Southern Miss defensive coordinator Tommy West looked to simplify things on the defensive end last weekend against East Carolina. He hoped to allow his players to think less and play more, and it worked. After allowing 632 yards and 49 points to Nebraska, the SOUTHERN MISS AT Golden Eagles WESTERN KENTUCKY allowed 228 yards and 24 points to East Carolina, seven of which were on a fumble recovery. “I’m going to move at their pace, not my pace,” West said. “The opponent was different, but I thought we were more aggressive. I think that had something to do with me letting them play and not trying to out-coach the other team.” Today’s game provides a different test for the Southern Miss defense. The first week tested the Golden Eagles with a spread option attack while East Carolina, like most of Conference USA, attacked with an “air raid” style. Western Kentucky runs a West Coast style offense, which means running backs and tight ends are more involved

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

Two big questions remain to be answered for the Southern Miss offense. Who will be the quarterback? How will injuries to left guard Joe Duhan and wide receiver Tracey Lampley hinder their contributions today? Duhon injured his hamstring during the East Carolina game but still was able to contribute. Sophomore Tyler Wilson will step in if Duhon is not able to play and has been practicing with the first BRYANT HAWKINS | HATTIESBURG AMERICAN team this week. A lack of effectivefense. In their overtime win against SEC ness by the offensive line could be the foe Kentucky, WKU rushed for 163 yards Eagles’ doom, as the Hilltoppers have

nine sacks through three games. Lampley has a banged-up knee and will be limited in practice this week. Head coach Ellis Johnson expects Lampley to be ready – the biggest issue with Lampley will be getting him the ball; Lampley recorded only five touches against East Carolina. Freshman quarterback Anthony Alford was named starter against East Carolina after junior Chris Campbell was dubbed the starter out of camp. This week’s starting quarterback could be announced right before the game. Johnson described their play in East Carolina as “hot and cold.” The difference between the two was the potential for explosive plays from Alford and the steadiness of Campbell, according to Johnson. Campbell and Alford split snaps this week in practice, and the staff will decide who gets the start. The Golden Eagles will face a team with a lot of confidence coming off maybe the biggest win in school history against Kentucky. It could be a long season at The Rock if Southern Miss stumbles on the road this week. “Right now they’re playing as well or better than we are,” Johnson said of WKU. “They’re a very good team.”

I think that’s very impressive.” – Ellis Johnson, Southern Miss head coach, on Western Kentucky’s loss at Alabama and win at Kentucky. Prediction: Western Kentucky, 27-23. John L. Pitts

No. 6 Oklahoma, led by QB Landry Jones, will be looking for revenge tonight against Kansas State. In the Pac-12, the marquee game is in Eugene, Ore., and it’s for fans of fast-break football. Rich Rodriguez, one of the godfathers of the fast-pace spread offense craze, against Chip Kelly, who has revved up the spread to warp speed with the Ducks. No. 3 Oregon has been unchallenged this fall, with D’Anthony Thomas racking up big plays. No. 22 Arizona is off to an encouraging start with Rodriguez, but the Wildcats will get a better idea of where they stand tonight.

TODAY’S NATIONAL SCHEDULE

BY RALPH D. RUSSO

Raised stakes and contempt bred by familiarity – conference play is different, and at this point it becomes the focus of the college football season. The Big 12 starts today with a showdown in Oklahoma, as the sixth-ranked Sooners face No. 15 Kansas State. TOP 25 In the Atlantic PREVIEW Coast Conference, No. 4 Florida State and No. 10 Clemson will go a long way toward deciding a division title in Tallahassee, Fla. The Sooners and Wildcats have contrasting offensive styles. Oklahoma plays up-tempo and tends to air it out with quarterback Landry Jones. K-State’s QB Collin Klein is battering ram who leads a deliberate, run-first attack. Last year, the Wildcats were 7-0 when Oklahoma came to Manhattan, Kan., and the Sooners turned what was billed as a big game into a laugher. Jones passed for a school-record 505 yards in a 58-17 victory, in which the Sooners outscored the Wildcats 35-0 in the second half. Kansas State’s pass defense is shaky again, ranking at the bottom of the Big 12. The Wildcats’ best defense might be Klein and tailback John Hubert churning out yards on the ground and keeping Jones on the bench. Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is 7-1 against his former boss, Kansas State’s Bill Snyder. In Tallahassee, the Seminoles will be looking for a little payback against the Tigers. Clemson beat the Seminoles 35-30 last season and went on to win the ACC title. Clemson’s ability to keep Florida State’s talented defensive ends Bjoern Werner and Cornellius Carradine away from quarterback Tajh Boyd will be key. It would be a big surprise if tonight’s winner wasn’t playing in the ACC title game.
