A DETECTIVE’S STORY
■ An Ole Miss graduate, Jane Tutor is now captain over investigations for the University of Mississippi Police Department. BY ERROL CASTENS
THOMAS WELLS
University of Mississippi Chief of Detectives Cpt. Jane Tutor is the first–ever female lead investigator. also pursuing a master’s degree in criminal justice at Ole Miss.
Building trust
Police work at Ole Miss is appreciably different from life on a big-city force – or even the work of Oxford and Lafayette County officers. Violent crimes are relatively rare on the bucolic campus, which was reflected in a recent statistical review that rated Ole Miss the ninth safest campus in the nation among colleges with 6,000 or more students. “We take pride in making it a safe campus,” Tutor said.
Property crimes make up the vast majority of cases that UPD detectives investigate. “Most of those are crimes of opportunity, because items are left unattended, or doors are not locked,” she said, noting that cell phones, laptop computers and other easily transportable valuables are common targets from unlocked vehicles or where the items have been set down and forgotten. “Very seldom does someone actually break a window or a door to take something,” Tutor said. To a much greater degree than off-campus, university
policing is about guidance and establishing trust, she said. “The main thing I like about dealing with students is the opportunity to educate them about how their choices now can affect them later in life,” Tutor said. “I enjoy interacting with the students – and with the faculty and staff, too. Getting to know people in the community helps police be more effective: People will come tell you things if they feel like they know you.” That trust is especially crucial in the rape-avoidance presentations she makes to groups of women and the corresponding presentations she makes to ed-
ucate young men about their role in the matter. “We go to some of the freshmen classes and speak about sexual assault,” she said. “We gear it toward the males in the class: ‘This is how not to be involved in anything close to sexual assault.’”
No immunity
Despite the relative safety of the Ole Miss case, serious crimes do happen occasionally. One memorable case for Tutor involved child pornography. “That case took a lot of time, and I learned a lot on it. That’s the only one like it that I’ve seen
here,” she said. She takes understandable satisfaction in its outcome. “The individual was prosecuted and is serving time in a federal penitentiary,” she said. Even the serious, sometimes heart-rending sphere of criminal investigation occasionally yields its lighter moments, though. One such laugh was provided by a perpetrator who e-mailed nude photos of himself to female students. Tutor noted wryly, “That was one of the easier cases to solve.”

OXFORD – Even though no one in her family had a law enforcement background, Jane Tutor can’t remember when she didn’t want to be a police officer. “Criminal justice was always something I was interested in,” said the 31-year-old lifelong Toccopola resident. “I decided to come to Ole Miss and major in political science with an emphasis in criminal justice.” After finishing her bachelor’s degree in 2002, she joined the University Police Department the next year and went through the Mississippi Law Enforcement Academy. Tutor began as a patrol officer and soon moved into investigations, becoming first a sergeant and then a lieutenant in the detective division. In August, Tutor was promoted to captain – the department’s first-ever female lead investigator. Tutor said her status as a female is treated matter-of-factly within the police department. “I’ve always been accepted. I expect myself to get out there and work just as hard as the males do, to carry my part of the load of duties every day,” she said. “Contributing my hard work and continuing to learn new things in law enforcement is what got me to where I am now.” Her boss, University Police Chief Calvin Sellers, has noticed her efforts. “Jane is smart and has a desire to learn,” he said. “She is also persistent, consistent and a good team player.” Tutor’s work ethic shows through beyond the department: While she and her husband, Scott, are expecting their first child in November, she is

abriela Ungo became an immigration lawyer in Tupelo after going through her own immigration ordeal.
“I feel more connected to them,” she said. Ungo grew up in the Central American country of Costa Rica, where she earned her law degree in 1994. “Then I met my husband and I got married and moved here,” she said. Her husband, Jaime, is from El Salvador. They decided that the United States would be neutral ground for the two cultures. In Miami, Jaime went to specialty medical training and Gabriela got her master’s degree in law. Because Jaime came to the U.S. on a training visa, immigration law required that he practice medicine in an federally-designated medically underserved area if he wanted to stay. The couple became familiar with Northeast Mississippi because their immigration lawyer, Barry Walker, was based in Tupelo. Tupelo is not an underserved area in the medical field, but Houlka is. So, Jaime, who was trained in pulmonary critical care, took a job that committed him to working in Chickasaw County for four years.
Gabriela Ungo practices law with the firm Walker & Ungo, the oldest full-time immigration law firm in the state. “He had so much training and he went back to general practice,” Gabriela said. Meanwhile, Gabriela stayed home. “My visa didn’t let me work,” she said. She couldn’t volunteer either. “After several years of doing nothing, I took the New York bar,” she said. New York, she said, is one of three states that lets foreign attorneys with a master’s degree take the exam to legally practice law. In 2000, she took the New York bar and passed it on her first try.
“Then I went straight to Barry Walker and asked for a job,” she said. She got the job and now the firm is called Walker & Ungo. It was founded in 1992 and is the oldest full-time immigration law firm in Mississippi. She said she finds her job to be more than being an attorney. “I not only practice law but I like to educate people on immigration,” she said. “There’s a lot of discrimination, racism going on. ... I’ve never felt discriminated, but I know that it is going on because I hear it from my clients. They come from different backgrounds, educa-
tional backgrounds, color.” Ungo suspects some of the discrimination also comes from the language differences. She speaks Spanish with her children and at home with her family, but, she said, that’s to make sure they are fully bilingual. “It’s not to be disrespectful,” she said. Ungo herself is fluent in English, Spanish and French and is conversant in Italian.
‘I like the small office’
Since immigration law is federal, Ungo said much of her work is done via phone and e-mail. “Most of our clients aren’t

“I like the small office,” she said. “It’s the ultimate job for a lawyer. A big firm is not for me.” She got her fill of a big firm in Miami, when she was hired to help MTV Latin America launch Nickelodeon in Latin America. Now, she said, many of her cases involve business immigration. For example, when a company in the U.S. wants to hire a worker who lives outside the country, the foreign person will need a work visa. She works a lot with foreign doctors and foreign investors. She also helps people do the paperwork for foreign adoptions, a part of her job she said she really enjoys. Ungo has three children of her own: Ricardo, 12; Gabriella, 7; and Mariana, 6. She also does some pro bono work for domestic violence cases involving a foreign citizen married to a U.S. citizen. “It’s very fulfilling as a profession because you can see the business side of it but you can chose other projects where you are helping the community,” Ungo said. “I’d love to see Bon Jovi. I might really have to call in sick that night and sneak in.”
As box office manager at the BancorpSouth Arena, it’s Jeanie Friday’s job to count the money. It turns out that money is dirty stuff. “That’s why we have Germ-X,” she said.

FRIDAY OVERSEES ARENA’S BOX OFFICE
BY M. SCOTT MORRIS Daily Journal
TUPELO – On her office wall at the BancorpSouth Arena, there’s a picture of Jeanie Friday rocking a crowd. You can’t really tell it’s Friday. But the artist who drew it, Friday’s granddaughter, Kayla, calls the picture “Meme and the Memettes.” “She calls me Meme,” Friday said. “I’m playing to a sold-out crowed right there.” In real life, Friday works behind the scenes at the arena. She’s the box office manager, responsible for selling tickets for shows and events that come to town. “I started here in 1993 part-time. In the following year, I was made assistant box office manager,” she said. “I’ve been manager since 1997.” When Friday started, tickets were pre-printed, and they were torn at the gates. Now, tickets are printed on-de-
mand, and workers at the doors use machines to read bar codes. “The days of spending the night at the box office, that’s kind of gone,” the 56-year-old Tupelo resident said. “Some people still do it, but most people use the Internet. Back in the day, we would have 100 people spending the night. It doesn’t really happen any more.”
Isolation booth? Almost
When the circus, the latest country star or a rock ‘n’ roll band are in town, Friday usually hears it from inside the box office. “You hear the ‘Booms,’” she said “One time, though, when ZZ Top was here, we could hear everything. That was loud.” Not that she could pay attention. It’s her job to make sure the money taken in matches the number of tickets sold. “I really enjoyed Elton John. That’s
probably one of my favorite concerts,” she said. “I didn’t really get to go out until the end, after we’d settled up, but I liked what I saw.” Her staff fluctuates. Most of the time, there are two people in the box office taking orders. On show days, that increases up to 10 people. The jump on show days reflects the way audiences tend to behave in Northeast Mississippi. Often, the staff at the arena don’t know for sure how good an event’s going to perform until the walk-up traffic gets to the ticket window. “The hard-core people that really want to see the show, they’re going to be here the day the tickets go on sale,” Friday said. “Then it may take the others a little while to realize, ‘Oh, I’d like to see that group.’”
Starstruck
Friday considers herself lucky to
have gotten to see Elton perform, even for a little while. She also was pleased to be in the same building as Kid Rock and Rev. Run. “My sad story is not getting a picture of Rev. Run,” she said. “I know that sounds silly, but I really wanted to get a picture of Rev. Run. Didn’t happen.” As a general rule, Friday doesn’t get starstruck often. She’s not jaded, but she’s learned that performers are people. “I can remember when Michael Bolton was here. I was just smiling, ‘Let’s go back and see him and just look at him,’” she said. “It was different in the beginning. I wanted to see anyone who was in the building. Now, I know they’re just people and they happen to be in the spotlight.” Still, an unexpected run-in with Alan Jackson helps to break up a workday.
“He was just walking around the building and I got to meet him,” she said. “He was nice.” It’s not all long-haired crooners and country music stars. Keep Friday in mind the next time a circus or a rodeo comes to the arena. “Yes, elephant dung,” she said. “Probably rodeos are the worse. The smell gets everywhere.” Friday takes the bad with the good, and enjoys the variety her job offers. “The basics are the same every day,” she said, “but every show is different. That’s what I like about it.” As for that picture on the wall of Meme and the Memettes on stage, it gets one thing wrong. “Meme is singing there. Meme would never sing,” Friday said. “I could lip sync. Now, I could do that.”

■ Lynda Simmons began working for the Social Security Administration the day after graduating from college.
ynda Simmons, district manager for the Social Security Administration in the Corinth office, found her ideal career match when she joined the agency 39 years ago, a day after her college graduation.
“I was a sociology major and had done some social work in college,” Simmons said. “Approaching graduation and trying to figure out what to do after college, I went through the counselor’s office on campus and got an interview with Social Security in the Dallas regional office.” Two weeks later the Marshall, Texas native – a town about 140 miles from Dallas – got the job offer after earning her bachelor’s degree at Bishop College in Dallas. As a district manager now, Simmons is several steps removed from day-to-day contact with clients, but serving them is what gives her the greatest satisfaction. “What we do affects people’s lives in a very positive way,” Simmons said. “Many times someone comes to us after the family wage earner is gone and there’s a loss of income, so it’s a very stressful time, and we’re able to help them.” Simmons had a social service focus in her studies and has used that background throughout her career, first as a claims representative,
Lynda Simmons, district manager at the Corinth Social Security Office, has been with the agency 39 years. then moving through promotions to operations analyst, operations supervisor, management support specialist and now as a district manager. However, she emphasizes that people at Social Security come from many educational and experiential backgrounds, and it’s not necessary to have any particular educational or employment history to work there. “There is an extensive training program one goes through when first hired at Social Security, and it teaches you everything the agency wants you to know about how to work in this environment,” she said. The staff of 14 employees in the Corinth office primarily serve Alcorn, Tippah and Tishomingo County clients for social security, the benefit for a retired or disabled
wage earner, and social security income, a government assistance program. “We take applications, process payments and oversee cases for our customers,” Simmons said. “We advertise our services in libraries, banks and other public places for people to learn about benefits they might qualify for. We also have great online access for people to get information on our office locations, even a place to estimate what your monthly social security benefit would be.” Another plus for Simmons’ career has been the portability of her job. Her husband, Larry Simmons, is retired from a military career, then a businessman, so each time the family has moved she’s been able to transfer to another office with no break in service.
The last move was to Memphis, and she commuted to the Holly Springs office before joining the Corinth office more than 7-1/2 years ago. Through the years she also has worked in Gulfport, Plaquemine, La., Oklahoma City, Okla., and Alexandria, La. She and her husband have two adult children – Candie Simmons, who works in marketing in Ridgeland, and Jeramie Simmons, who works in advertising in Memphis. Though Simmons divides her time between the job in Corinth and home in Memphis, she’s a passionate football fan who also likes following favorite college and pro teams. “I like Ole Miss and Alabama because those are where my children went to school, but I also like other

SEC teams,” Simmons said. The Dallas Cowboys are on a list of several professional teams she follows. Her other passion is wedding planning. “I’ve coordinated several weddings, and I keep getting more and more requests to do that,” Simmons said. None of those other interests, however, can take her focus off providing the best possible service to agency clients. “We are a customer-oriented agency,” Simmons said. “There is a purpose behind the laws Congress enacted to create Social Security, and we strive at all times to treat our customers with dignity and respect.”

Ruff balances family, work and school
BY CHRIS KIEFFER Daily Journal
SHANNON – Cindy Ruff is amazed by the strength of her youngest daughter who often remains cheerful despite a rare bone tumor that requires regular surgeries. Kayla Ruff said she learned that demeanor from her mother. Cindy Ruff has been an assistant teacher at Shannon Elementary and Shannon Primary for the past 13 years. She’s also been pursuing her education degree, and since her husband died in 2003, she’s worked a second part-time job to help make ends meet. The extra work has often forced her to take online classes as attempts to earn her degree, either completing assignments at 1 in the morning, after her late shift ends, or catching a couple hours of sleep and waking up at 3 or 4 to do her school work. She’s also taken several Saturday classes. What she hasn’t done much of is complain. “It amazes me how she can deal with everything and act like it doesn’t bother her,” said Kayla Ruff, 18. “On the inside it does, but she acts like it doesn’t. It makes me want to be like her where I can go on with everything and not let things get me down.”
“One thing I want my children to see is that they can succeed. No matter what mountain falls in their path, they can move forward. I want my children to say, ‘Mom did it; I can do it, too.’”
Cindy Ruff
Assistant teacher at Shannon Elementary and Shannon Primary
weeks later. Trying to support the family, she became a dispatcher at Kel-Tech, working there from 4 until 10 p.m. after being at school from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. She also offers an ironing service. Although Ruff isn’t working at Kel-Tech this fall, she said she didn’t mind the long nights of getting little sleep while she squeezed in time to study for her classes. “Your body just gets accustomed to that,” Ruff said. “After my husband’s death, I didn’t sleep much, so I did other things to occupy myself.” Ruff took some time off from school to regroup immediately after her husband’s death and has also had to take semesters off while caring for Kayla, who regularly has to go to Atlanta for surgeries. But she continued working on her degree. “Cindy is always upbeat,” said Shannon Primary’s secretary Joanna Williams. “She is a very big inspiration to me in the way that she raises kids by herself and even wants to go back to school. Most people in her situation would forget about education and would just work.” Ruff received her associates degree from Northeast Mississippi Community College in 2009, and she plans to enroll in Ole Miss next fall. “One thing I want my children to see is that they can succeed,” Ruff said. “No matter what mountain falls in their path, they can move forward. I want my children to say, ‘Mom did it; I can do it, too.’” She credits many for helping her through the difficult time, including her family, the faculty at Shannon Elementary and Shannon Primary, former Shannon Primary principal Don Christian and her church family at Brewer United Methodist. Ruff moved from Shannon Elementary to Shannon Primary when the kindergarten class was moved to the new primary school in 2004. Her daughter Kelly, 21, said that Cindy Ruff has also demonstrated great faith during the difficult time. She said the family has become closer knit. “She has always been there for everyone else,” Kelly Ruff said. “We don’t just have the mother-daughter relationship. She is our friend, and we can really talk to her about anything.”
Cindy Ruff had done a little bit of factory work but had mainly been a housewife until 1998 when then-Shannon Elementary principal Don Whitlock asked the frequent volunteer whether she would like to try something new. “He said, ‘you’re down here all the time volunteering, so why don’t you come here to work?’” said Ruff, who also has an older daughter, Kelly, and a stepson, Moses. The Brewer resident thrived working with the kindergarten students in Christie Smith’s classroom and began to pursue her education degree. That became more difficult when her Contact Chris Kieffer at (662) 678-1590 or husband suddenly became ill at work and died chris.kieffer@djournal.com.

Reporter-turned-anchor enjoys every aspect of job at WTVA BY GINNA PARSONS Daily Journal
TUPELO – Every evening before going to bed, Keegan Foxx sets her alarm for 1:30 a.m. When the buzzer goes off, she gets up, showers, dresses, dons her makeup, does a little laundry, and prepares a breakfast of scrambled eggs and Tater Tots with Tabasco. By 4 o’clock, long before the sun has risen, Foxx is at her desk at work, catching up on the day’s headlines. Foxx, 28, is the morning co-anchor, and the producer and anchor of the noon show at WTVA in Tupelo. The University of Mississippi broadcast journalism graduate has been at the station since October 2009. “This is definitely a change in lifestyle from what I was used to,” said Foxx, who was adopted from South Korea when she was 5 months old by her family in south Mississippi. “I used to go to bed at 1:30 and, now, that’s when I wake up.” Foxx wasn’t always interested in being on the air. She began her journalism career in high school as a reporter for the student newspaper. She also did a weekly sports write-up for the George County Times, her hometown paper in Lucedale. Her first “real” job after college was as a reporter for WCBI in Columbus. From there, she went to WDAM in Hattiesburg, where she worked as a reporter from May 2005 to December 2008. But when the economy tanked, the petite brunette was laid off. It would be 10 months before she would work again. “It was a difficult time, but it wasn’t as hard as it could have been,” she said. “During the time I was laid off, I tried to get away from TV. I didn’t want to ever be put in that position (of not hav-

Journalism just gets into your blood.” When Foxx went to work for WTVA, she’d never been an anchor or a producer before. “My background was as a reporter until I got here,” she said. “I miss reporting. I miss getting out and interviewing people and meeting people. But I really do like all of it. Every single part of it.”

Foxx has no qualms about being before a camera every day. “It doesn’t make me nervous at all, but put me in front of a small group of people to speak and I freak out,” she said. “I start to sweat and my voice trembles.” Foxx acknowledged that she is often recognized by complete strangers when she’s out in public. And while she doesn’t mind the attention, she doesn’t go looking for it. “I don’t feel like I deserve the attention just because I’m on TV,” she said. “There are other people out there who deserve that attention and recognition, like doctors, firefighters and policeman. I do this job because I like this job. Some people want it for the notoriety, but not me.” By 1 o’clock in the afternoon, Foxx is usually back home, curled up on her couch. When the clock strikes 5, and most people are headed home from work, she’d getting ready for bed, long before the sun has set. “The only other thing I ever wanted to do was be a background dancer for Britney Spears,” she said, laughing. “But I think that ship has sailed. ‘Sister Golden Hair’ advocates for animals ■ It’s Donna Johnson’s mission to educate people about the creepy crawlies. BY EMILY LE COZ

Daily Journal
Snakes and lizards fascinated her. Rather than run, Johnson would accept the critters as gifts. “Thanks, boys,” she’d say before sauntering off to study her new pets. Thus began a lifelong love of the creepy crawly creatures most people fear, a love that landed Johnson the most perfect job on earth: head naturalist at Crow’s Neck Environmental Education Center, where she specializes in amphibians and reptiles. “I never really got into it, it was just the way I was,” Johnson said. “I didn’t even know there was a name for it naturalist. Snakes and lizards and insects always fascinated me.” Johnson – who goes by the nickname “Sister Golden Hair” for her long, blond locks – spends her days familiarizing people with these misunderstood animals. She lets them touch and examine live turtles and snakes, and explains the role they play in the natural environment. “People fear what they don’t know,” Johnson said. “That’s why I like to do programs and talk to people about it, educate them and make them realize there are purposes for the different animals. The most rewarding is seeing people for the first time maybe touch the animals or understand that everything has its place. I love seeing it click - the respect.” About half of Johnson’s work keeps her on site at Crow’s Neck, a sprawling campus on a 530-acre peninsula jutting into Bay Springs Lake. Groups frequently visit for hands-on experiences led by Johnson and other staff members. When she’s not at the center, John-

She also has experience with a number of mammals and birds she has rehabilitated or raised privately. Before joining Crow’s Neck, Johnson rescued animals on her own. She did this while working as the branch head of the Burnsville Public Library,

a job she’d held 12 years. “We lived in the woods, and people would bring me their animals and I would rehab and release,” said Johnson, who lives in Rienzi. “We had possums and raccoons. We had ospreys brought out one time, and I fed them for a week until we were able to place them with a refuge.” But she eventually had to stop her private work because too many people discovered and used her services. It became overwhelming, she said. “People were dropping off pregnant dogs and people were abusing the situation,” she said. “It got out of hand.” Now Johnson performs most of her
animal work at Crow’s Neck. Yet she still keeps pets at home, as do her children. Among the family favorites are a fuzzy tarantula and an Egyptian uromastyx lizard – both of whom can live several decades. Johnson, who had six children, likes to say she has “more kids than the old woman in the shoe and more animals than on Noah’s Ark.” And despite the passing of two of her children, Johnson said she feels blessed. She also feels motivated, which is why Johnson went back to school recently. In addition to her job at Crow’s Neck, she now studies organizational leadership at Jackson, Tenn.based Union University. This gives nine bands the opportunity to compete against each other for awards in Drum Major, Color Guard, Drum Line & Band. The tnine bands will be divided by number of students in two divisions - five in the Blue Division, four in the Gold Division. Then there will be overall awards for the Contest. The judging panel will have nine judges and they will utilize Caption Judging where each judge will evaluate the bands in one of three captions: Music 45%, Marching-
Visual 35%, and General Effect 20%. There will be two Judges in each caption with the scores being averaged with each caption and added to come up with an overall score. Caption Judging enables each adjudicator to focus on one area of performance rather than all areas giving each band a better evaluation of their performance. The Mississippi Invitational Marching Classic will begin at 6:45 PM. It will end at 8:42 PM with awards to immediately follow. Who will be the Champion of the Mississippi Invitational Marching Classic? Come see who the Champion will be.

On June 18, 1812, the United States stunned the world by delcaring war on Great Britain. This war was fought between 1812 and 1815 and started over a multitude of reasons, including trade restrictions, impressment of the United States nave personnel into the Royal Navy, alleged British support of the American Indian tribes against American expansion, and the humiliation of American honor. There were 6,765 casualties and 2,260 killed in action and is often referred to as the "Second war of Independence" and the "Forgotten War". The Purple Pride Marching Band pays tribute to that war performing their show "The War of 1812" which features selections from the 1812 Overture, Chester, When Johnny comes marching home, the 8th of November, and my Country Tis of Thee. The Band is under the Direction of Mrs. Suzanne Rolison; Drum Major is Kristen Whitley; Drum Captain is Ben Ivey; Guard Captain is Sarah Hauser; Woodwind Section leader is Brandy Russell; High Brass Section Leaders are Tyler Burgess and Reid Price; Low Brass Section Leaders are Quentin Rhodes and Kaitlin Moore.

Medusa
Medusa explores the personality and life of the mythical underworld goddess who could turn to stone those who dared look at her and her bizarre head of live venomous snakes. The edgy music slithers through the lush harmonies and pulsating rhythms of ancient times, striking out-when least expected-like a coiled serpent to emphasize the menacing anxiety of Medusa’s distorted view of the world.
