Tyson JOHN L. did get beaten, quite unexpectedly, PITTS by Buster Douglas. I watched that live from Japan on HBO, quite stunned, in my swinging bachelor pad back in 1990. So it’s possible one of these teams will have a puncher’s chance today, if one of the SEC teams gets caught thinking ahead to next week – both for the turkey and the rivalry games. The last game of the day, Samford at Kentucky, may hold the greatest possibility of an upset, simply because the Wildcats are so awful and their assistants have probably spent

FIVE GAMES TO WATCH

STANFORD AT OREGON: Here’s the biggest game of significance on a pre-holiday weekend schedule in which a lot of major-college teams are playing turkeys. Stanford’s bruising style presents an interesting challenge for a fast-paced Oregon team that is battling significant injuries on defense. SOUTHERN CAL AT UCLA: Just as important as the rivalry being relevant again – both teams are ranked – is the fact the game is being played at noon instead of at

night. USC has lost only once in the series since 1998, that classic 13-9 upset of 2006. KANSAS STATE AT BAYLOR: The second-ranked Wildcats, who got so close to the first Bowl Championship Series title game in 1998, are two wins from clinching a berth in this year’s game. Today’s game is dangerous only because it could be a trap two weeks before K-State closes the season at home against Texas. WESTERN CAROLINA AT ALABAMA: The Crimson Tide’s BCS computer numbers

We had a couple of highprofile suspensions early in the season – one for Ole Miss – and then ... nothing. Has it stopped, or did the zebras get bored and move on? • Take a quick look at our weekly SEC rankings on Page 5. For the first time this season, all three of us have picked different teams as the league’s best. And Alabama and Texas A&M are tied for first. • I keep hearing the SEC is pushing for a Thanksgiving night TV game in future seasons – after the fashion of the previous MSU-Ole Miss series – but it’s more likely to involve LSU and new league members Texas A&M. What choice does Alabama have other than to win both games convincingly? WAKE FOREST AT NOTRE DAME: The Fighting Irish (10-0) face one more hurdle to be unbeaten for their Nov. 24 visit to Southern Cal. Wallace completed 31 of 49 attempts. There were several drops that kept him from a higher completion percentage, but overall it was a solid effort by a group of receivers that seem to be growing in chemistry and confidence. Aside from Logan, Sanders had five catches for 96 yards, Donte Moncrief eight for 74, and Korvic Neat five for 45. Logan, who found himself matched up

Senior class gets its due today in Starkville BY BRAD LOCKE DAILY JOURNAL

Dan Mullen had a pretty good read on Chad Bumphis. Johnthan Banks was a little tougher to evaluate. They’ve both turned out just fine for Mississippi State. Bumphis starred at Tupelo, a Class 5A school at the time, ARKANSAS AT before signing MISSISSIPPI STATE with MSU in 2009. Banks was also a member of that class, coming from tiny East Webster, a Class 1A powerhouse. Both will be recognized with the rest of MSU’s seniors prior to today’s game against Arkansas. Most of these seniors were members of Mullen’s first signing class at State. Mullen said it was tougher to evaluate Banks than Bumphis in high school. “There weren’t many guys John was playing that were going on to play college football, so you’re kind of evaluating him

Mullen didn’t know in 2009 whether Banks would have this sort of career. Neither did Banks. “I never played against anybody like Chad coming out of high school – Chad and Chris Smith and Tyler (Russell), those type guys,” Banks said. “I really didn’t know what I was up for. They’re all still there.” – MSU coach Dan Mullen, on the Arkansas talent level. Prediction: MSU, 34-24. Brad Locke

Mullen was still at Florida. His freshman year, Bumphis said teammates called him “Chad Mullen” because of how tight he was with his new coach. “The national championship game, when (Florida) played Oklahoma, I texted him and asked him what the first play was, and he gave me like the first 10play sequence,” Bumphis said. Banks, Bumphis and several other members of that 2009 class were forced to play right away out of necessity. It’s a special group to Mullen, who has gotten the Bulldogs bowl-eligible for the third consecutive season. “They’ll always kind of keep that special place in my heart throughout my career of these are the first guys that believed in what we were trying to do here,” Mullen said, “and they’re going to leave as one of the most successful classes in school history.” brad.locke@journalinc.com

Scouting report: Arkansas at Mississippi State KEYS FOR VICTORY

1. COMMUNICATE. MSU’s secondary has been burned a few times in recent weeks, and the culprit – according to players and coaches – has been miscommunication. That is somewhat surprising for a group with so many veterans, like Johnthan Banks, Corey Broomfield and Nickoe Whitley. Any such issues today could lead to big plays for Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson, who’s averaging 311.4 passing yards per game. Arkansas has 44 passing plays of 20 or more yards, which ranks 13th in the country, and MSU has given up 13 such passing plays over the last three games. Cornerbacks coach Melvin Smith said earlier in the week he thought the communication problem was “fixable” in practice. 2. REGAIN THE RUN GAME. State has struggled running the ball the last three weeks, averaging just 64 yards in losses to Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU. Falling behind early has been a problem, so it’s not all the offense’s fault. Arkansas isn’t easy to run on, as it ranks fifth in the SEC in rushing defense, giving up an average of 119.7 yards per game. Having starting tailback LaDarius Perkins back from a quad injury should give the run game a

boost, but MSU needs to get more out of backups Nick Griffin, Derrick Milton and Josh Robinson. 3. PRESSURE WILSON. MSU’s pass rush hasn’t been great this season (16 sacks), and the Razorbacks have protected Wilson well, giving up only 15 sacks. However, Arkansas has allowed 7.0 sacks over its last three games, while MSU’s defense has recorded that many over its last four games. State can’t afford to let Wilson sit back in the pocket and do his thing. Last season, he shredded the Bulldogs to the tune of 365 yards and three touchdowns in a 44-17 Arkansas win.

WHAT TO WATCH

WHEN ARKANSAS HAS THE BALL Wilson hasn’t had the array of weapons at his disposal as he had last year. Receiver Cobi Hamilton has been carrying the load in the pass game, and he leads the SEC with 1,149 yards. Still, Wilson has been effective and has 18 touchdown passes. The rushing attack hasn’t been as strong as hoped. Tailback Knile Davis, a former 1,000-yard rusher returning from an knee injury, has only rushed for only 340 yards on 100 carries. Dennis Johnson leads the way with 639 yards and eight touchdowns.

WHEN MSU HAS THE BALL MSU hopes to regain the balance it had for much of the season. State has passed the ball more than it’s run only three times this season – the past three games, all losses. Early deficits and the absence of Perkins were big factors, and for the first two games quarterback Tyler Russell struggled to carry the load. But he had a career-high 295 passing yards against LSU last week. Senior receiver Chad Bumphis had nine catches for 140 yards, and he’s been productive for two consecutive games after a couple of quiet outings.

CRUCIAL MATCHUP

MSU DEFENSIVE END DENICO AUTRY VS. ARKANSAS OFFENSIVE LINE Autry has come on strong the last few weeks and seems due for a breakout game. The junior college transfer has 3.0 sacks this season and has become more active in opposing teams’ backfield. Again, Arkansas has protected Wilson well, but letting him sit in the pocket, make his reads and find a rhythm could spell trouble. Autry could disrupt all that. Brad Locke

AP

Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson is averaging over 300 yards per game, so turning up the heat on him is a key task for MSU’s defense.

Scouting report: Ole Miss at LSU KEYS FOR VICTORY

1. SLOW THE LSU RUN GAME While depth is an issue, one place the Rebels have been able to rotate players is the defensive line, and it’s begging to show. Ole Miss is able to move tackles in and out, especially as redshirt freshman Woodrow Hamilton has returned from injury. Ends are moving in and out too. Rested and healthy players on the front line need to set the tone slowing down the LSU run game and forcing the Tigers to throw. LSU has been successful in the passing game of late, but the body of work is less than it is with the Tigers with their depth at running back. 2. EXECUTE IN THE PASSING GAME It’s asking too much to believe the Rebels’ struggling running game will correct itself against LSU’s run defense. If it does, that’s a bonus. Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze will keep taking shots in the run game so opponents can’t just AP pin their ears back and rush the passer. Freshman RB Jeremy Hill The more likely scenario for Ole Miss has three of LSU’s seven success is for Wallace to make right 100-yard rushing efforts reads and be accurate and for his rethis season. ceivers to reduce or eliminate drops.

3.FINISH WITH TOUCHDOWNS If you’re kicking field goals of less than 30 yards, you’re messing up. Ole Miss settled for three chip-shot field goals in its one-point loss to Vanderbilt. The Rebels have to execute on offense to get to the red zone, and when they’re there, they need to finish strong. This isn’t a team that is going to blow people off the ball, particularly when the field shrinks, and the line of scrimmage is crowded. When the offense is clicking the Rebels have been able to successfully attack the edge to get in the end zone. That happened twice at Alabama. Maybe scoring touchdowns means coming up with a play or plays not yet seen on video, but the Rebels won’t pull an upset in Baton Rouge with short field goals.

WHAT TO WATCH

WHEN LSU HAS THE BALL The Tigers will run first, because that’s their strength. LSU averages 192.5 yards a game, fourth in the league. The Rebels have had good success

against the run in their last two games. They held Georgia to less than 4 yards a carry, Vanderbilt to just 2.9 yards a carry. LSU coach Les Miles won’t hesitate to turn to an improving quarterback in Zach Mettenberger to test an Ole Miss secondary with little depth that is playing at less than full strength. Mettenberger has thrown 110 straight passes without an interception. WHEN OLE MISS HAS THE BALL Freeze would love to have some success in the run game to keep from being one-dimensional on offense. The Rebels have been held below 100 yards rushing in each of the last three games, and LSU allows less than 100 rushing yards on average. While it was only one-dimensional, the Ole Miss offense was pretty good in the passing game against Vanderbilt as Bo Wallace threw for 403 yards. He had no turnovers, but had just one touchdown pass. Ole Miss receivers seem to be peaking at a good time. Wallace and his receivers need to produce more touchdowns.

CRUCIAL MATCHUP

OLE MISS DEFENSIVE LINE AGAINST LSU RUNNING BACKS The Tigers have produced seven 100yard rushing games this season, three of them from freshman Jeremy Hill. LSU lists four running backs on its depth chart, three of which have started at least one game this year. Ole Miss had good success in its run defense against Georgia and Vanderbilt, more against where it should be noted that started Zac Stacy left injured early in the game. If the Rebels can control the run, they can force Mettenberger to win the game. He may be up to the task, but the larger body of work says the running backs certainly are. Parrish Alford

Winless Golden Eagles stumble into home finale BY PATRICK MAGEE THE SUN HERALD (MCT)

HATTIESBURG – Southern Miss football coach Ellis Johnson’s demeanor has changed little this season as his team has stumbled to an 0-10 record, but it would be wrong to assume he hasn’t felt the strain of the worst UTEP AT season in school SOUTHERN MISS history. USM defensive coordinator Tommy West, who had Johnson as his defensive coordinator when he was head coach at Clemson in the mid 1990s, describes Johnson’s style of coaching as always being “very calculated.” “Ellis is a personality that’s not going to show you emotion, but I promise you there’s plenty in there and he’s hurting,” West said Monday. “I’m not trying to punch the sympathy vote, because I’m sure we wouldn’t get any right now, but he’s hurt.” While Johnson has managed to keep

North Carolina. “To defend these players ... it’s been hard on them,” Johnson said. “When you go through system changes and all of a sudden six key players are gone early, it’s just tough. There is not a quick fix.”

QUARTERBACK TROUBLES

The biggest problem has been at the quarterback position where USM has started four different players and played five total. The USM quarterbacks have combined to throw just four touchdowns and 12 interceptions. For Johnson and his players, the goal is a simple one in the final two games of the season against Memphis and UTEP, a pair of two-win teams. “These are two winnable games that we have to finish up with, but it’s going to be a challenge to do it,” Johnson said. “Hopefully, we’ll win a couple of games for the seniors. It would be a brighter offseason for the young guys, and it certainly doesn’t hurt recruiting.”

Notes: After a win by Massachusetts last weekend, Southern Miss is the last remaining winless major-college team. This is the first time a Golden Eagles team has lost 10 games. ... The depth charts for this week have at least 15 upperclassmen as starters – nine on offense and six or perhaps seven on defense. ... Mike Price’s official UTEP biography does not mention his brief tenure in 2003 as Alabama head coach. Summing it up: “I keep trying to find something that I can do to figure out why we’re so bad at ball security and why we’re not creating more turnovers.” – Ellis Johnson, Southern Miss head coach. His team is minus-15 in turnover margin, Prediction: UTEP, 26-23.
