Ladies’ spring fashion more feminine than ever

The bohemian look of the 1970s is back with a vengeance.

Flowery tops, bell-bottom jeans and earthy shoes are all must-haves this spring.

“Everything is really comfortable,” said Jade Gaskin, owner of Luxe in Tupelo.

Krista Blanchard at Reed’s Department Store said the overall fit for spring is loose and free-flowing.

“It’s an easy fit,” she said. “It’s comfortable to wear all day.”

The floral pattern is the biggest trend this season.

Reed’s, Luxe, True Blue and Runway all featured floral patterns in dresses, blouses, skirts, tunics and rompers.

Dresses are a must-have for spring, especially midi skirts, Gaskin said. Maxi dresses are still big sellers at True Blue, Estrada said.

Capri leggings and tunics are a style that has carried over for the past several seasons.

Oversized blouses and tees are big sellers at Luxe, Gaskin said, as are pleated shorts.

White jeans will be hugely popular, Stout said, as will jeans with a lighter denim wash.

Skinny jeans are still stylish

but flare and bell-bottom jeans are making a huge comeback.

“It’s the ‘70s look,” Stout said.

“We’re also seeing jeans with a higher waist line.”

Unlike the skinny jean, which can be tricky to wear, flare leg jeans are for any body shape.

“Flare jeans flatter everyone because it balances out the hips,” Stout said.

Some women may also fear horizontal stripes, but they’re in everything this spring, from blouses to skirts to handbags.

Wide stripes are popular, especially if they’re navy, for that nautical look. One of the dresses at Runway featured white and navy stripes on top with a brightly colored skirt.

“If you’re afraid of stripes, carry a striped purse,” said Cindy Collums, a co-owner of True Blue.

Touch of lace

“Embroidery is huge,” Stout said.

Blouses featuring crochet detailing or lace are bringing out a feminine look, especially when added to the neckline or on the bottom trim.

“The crochet detail gives it the ‘70s vibe,” Gaskin said.

Crochet belts are also in style, Stout said.

To make a look more feminine, try a lace vest, Stout suggested.

Spring-like colors

White and ivory are big players in spring fashion, and Blanchard said it looks terrific paired with the colorful flowers of the season.

Shades of orange, coral and melon are in everything from blouses to handbags. Honeysuckle, tomato red and mint green are popular colors at Luxe.

All shades of blue and turquoise are in style.

Color blocking – pairing strong colors together either in one piece or in an entire outfit – is in. It’s bold, but it’s in style.

An example of a color block outfit, Estrada said, is a pink top paired with an orange skirt and tourquoise heels.

“That’s what’s fun about it,” she said. “It’s kind of like breaking the rules.”

TUPELO – Like spring flowers, spring fashion is all about a renewal for the fairer sex.

“This spring feels like a celebration of the woman and the feminine,” said Andrea Estrada, co-owner of True Blue in Pontotoc. “It’s a really fun spring this year.”

Bright colors and delicate embellishments are making this spring one of the most traditionally girly seasons women have seen in a while.

“I see more feminine trends than ever,” said Keri Stout, owner of Runway Boutique in New Albany.

When the sun pokes out and starts to thaw Northeast Mississippi, men’s clothing stores feel it.

“I think people get cabin fever,” said Jimmy Long, co-owner of MLM Clothiers in Tupelo, “and when the sun comes out, people are looking for some color.”

No matter what the calendar said, the burst of spring-like weather in late February had an immediate impact.

“We’re selling beautiful linen shirts, beautiful long-sleeve summer shirts and short-sleeve summer shirts,” Long said. “Everything is new.”

Saltillo’s Spencer Pleasants celebrates individuality in fashion

ALTILLO – Whatever is the must-have look for everyone this season isn’t a must-have for Spencer Pleasants.

Constantly bucking the trend, Pleasants isn’t concerned with what’s in style for spring. He’s looking for clothes that reflect the many facets of his sunny personality, from his love of punk and glam rock to his religious beliefs.

“What you wear is a reflection of what’s on the inside,” he said. “It matters how you present your personal style.”

Chunky, fun shoes a must for spring

Cute but comfortable is what’s driving spring fashion footwear for women.

Earthy wedges and cloth flats provide both, making them a popular choice this spring.

“I’m seeing a lot of wedges with a wooden heel,” said Keri Stout, owner of Runway Boutique in New Albany.

Cork heels are also stylish, said Krista Blanchard of Reed’s Department Store.

“It’s so nice to wear after wearing your boots all winter,” she said.

Jade Gaskin, owner of Luxe in Tupelo, said the throwback wedge is a great look for spring.

Sandals are still in, but it’s less of a gladiator style and more of a sleek look, she said.

Thong sandals are a good option for spring, said Andrea Estrada of True Blue in Pontotoc.

As business casual has become a firmly established reality, shoemakers have taken note.

“For us, business casual remains the No. 1 factor when it comes to men’s footwear,” said Corey Chunn, Shoe Country manager.

Brands like Merrell and MBT make shoes that wouldn’t do for a black-tie event, but they offer comfort for the work day or for play.

“MBT is a comfortable shoe that conforms to your feet without a CHUNN breaking-in period,” he said. “They’re designed to bring out your natural walking style.”

Chunn added there’s still a need for dress shoes, and old favorites are coming back into fashion.

“We’re seeing wing tips, cap tips and bicycle toes coming back,” Chunn said.

Here’s a quick primer: ■ Wing tips have elaborate stitching that meets on the top of the shoe.

■ Cap tip stitching goes over the top of the shoe and looks like a cap.

■ Bicycle toe stitching goes along each side of the shoe but doesn’t meet.

“Those retro looks are coming back,” Chunn said.

a face stamped into them – a face with Xs for eyes and a straight mouth. Those aren’t the kind of studs you see every day.

I’ve been lucky enough to find several pair of gorgeous, locally made earrings, too, which are always extra fun.

I’m not supposed to wear dangly earrings for about another two months, just to make sure the heavy earrings don’t stretch the holes in my ears.

I’ve already cheated on that rule, however, and worn a pair or two. Dangly earrings are my favorite. There is nothing as lovely as a dangly pair of earrings – or, as Scarlett O’Hara described them, “dancing earrings.”

In fact, it was that description that inspired me to pierce my ears.

Last fall I was reading “Gone With the Wind” and Scarlett said, “Dancing earrings always attracted a man and gave a girl such a spirited air.”

I’m still new to this pierced ear look, but I can tell you, Scarlett ain’t kidding.

Perched in the tiny chair in Claire’s Boutique in the mall, I responded, “Pretty much.”

I’d gone 27 years through life with unpierced ears, and one Sunday morning I decided it was finally time to get it done.

Pop! Pop! And I had pierced ears.

Now that I’m able to wear this new accessory, my ideas about jewelry and fashion have had to change just a bit.

Each morning it’s fun to go through my small but growing earring collection and pick something that complements my outfit or something that totally clashes with it, just for effect.

I love a good stand-out stud earring.

Some of my favorites I’ve acquired are some hot-pink robots that always make a fun statement.

I love my simple, stylish black stars that go with everything.

I love my out-of-the-ordinary studs that I call my “dead folks.”

PONTOTOC – Spread out on Krista Blanchard’s kitchen table are pearls, watch pieces, pliers, spools of wire and beads of every color.

Blanchard’s table is headquarters, ground zero, the home of her jewelry line, Sadie.

That’s where she and her five helpers, all family, create handmade necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets and keychains.

Crafting jewelry

Blanchard started Sadie –

named after her mom, Sadie Kenney – in 2005.

“I was on maternity leave

with my first child,” she said.

“I had no intention of making jewelry. I just needed

something to do, to make a little extra money.”

A friend taught her the jewelry-making basics, and Blanchard blossomed from there. She started out by buying her supplies at Hobby Lobby but has since graduated to buying her pieces from just about everywhere.

She goes to bead shows in Memphis and has special shells imported from places like the Philippines.

“I had to get a fish and wildlife license to get those shells imported here,” she said, laughing.

What started as just a hobby is now a legitimate side business.

Now, when she goes to bead shows, “I get the biggest adrenaline rush,” she said.

And with the help of her sales rep, Blanchard sees Sadie being sold in boutiques throughout the Southeast.

Blanchard keeps the line pretty exclusive, though.

Only Reed’s carries Sadie in Tupelo, while the Red Door carries it in Pontotoc.

When Blanchard first started Sadie, she was making the jewelry and repping it herself, loading her two sons into her car and driving to stores to sell it.

Now, she has five members of her family who help her create jewelry. There’s her parents, Sadie and David Kenney; her brother, John; her sister, Jill Cole; and her father-in-law, Terry Melton.

Cole helps Blanchard develop design ideas.

“She’s very, very creative,” Blanchard said.

Since Blanchard works at Reed’s Department Store, she sees plenty of fashion and draws inspiration from clothes and other jewelry she sees.

“Of course, we put our own take on it,” she said.

Blanchard likes for her wire to have a textured appearance, so she’ll beat it with a hammer before adding the design to it.

“I think that makes them more interesting when they have texture,” she said.

Spring styles for Sadie include nature influences like birds, dragonflies and leaves, and a mix of pastels and bright colors – but not together. Vintage is Blanchard’s favorite style, so she incorporates a lot of pieces that have an antique look.

Her brother helps by creating large wire flowers, while her father-in-law crafts wire crosses.

Each person has his or her own special task.

“Daddy is 76. Sometimes he’ll be fast, sometimes he’ll go slow,” she said, laughing.

“I guess I’ve been doing it so long that I’m the fastest.”

Bold colors, beads, buttons big this spring for kids

Beasley said one thing she’s seeing a lot of this spring are eclectic adornments on clothing.

“There’s lots of crochet, crocheted accents, unusual buttons, buttons with details on them, lots of lace, wooden beads, sequins,” she said.

“Even a blue-jean jacket has a little fabric splash here, a little jewel there.”

Russell said she’s seeing a lot of appliqués on children’s clothing, both for boys and girls.

“And the appliqués are more like 3D,” she said. “They kind of stuck out, you know? And we’re seeing a lot of flowers, crocheted flowers, flowers pinned on outfits.”

Beasley noted that one look that’s popular for pre-teen girls is sort of mismatched fashion-forward clothing.

“It’s not something we’re used to.

This is high-end children’s fashion,” she said. “It might mix a stripe with a floral print or combine multiple fabrics in one outfit.”

Pitcock said the fashion feels almost retro.

“A lot of the prints are going back to the 1970s,” she said. “And a lot of the fabrics are more eco-friendly, like

Late Easter

Because Easter comes late this year – April 24 – you can forget sweater vests for boys.

“We’ll probably see more shorts and

golf shorts,” Craft said. “Linen, cotton, poplin and madras plaid shorts that come right above the knee are huge.”

For younger boys, Russell is seeing those same madras plaid shorts, but with a brighter shirt.

TUPELO – Is it possible to define spring fashion for children in one word this year?

Yes, it is.

Color.

“If there’s anything I have to say about this spring, it’s color, color, color,” said Monia Beasley at Doodles. “And I’m so glad, because I love color.”

And we’re not talking pale, muted colors either.

“The color tangerine is real big,” said Machelle Pitcock at Ladybug’s.

“We’re also seeing yellows and lime greens.”

Even boys are getting into the bright colors.

“We’re seeing lots of turquoise,” said Sissie Craft at Reed’s. “The clothing for boys is very traditional in body, but the color palette is brighter.”

DeAnna Russell at Silly Simpson’s said she’s still seeing some soft colors for Easter, with the brighter colors being reserved for more casual wear.

“For boys, orange seems to be a pretty good color this year,” she said.

Linen finds a new season ■ Traditional Southern staple is getting a modern makeover.

Linen is throwing off its stereotypes.

Long a favorite in the South, linen developed a certain reputation that it was the provenance of very mature women, had to be ironed until it was crispy and should be put away after Labor Day. “It’s no longer just for your grandmother’s hankies,” said Barbara Fleishhacker, owner of the Main Attraction in Tupelo.

The fabric is classic, but it’s less stuffy and very versatile.

“It’s very fun,” said Phyllis Robinson, owner of Devilish Mary in Tupelo. “You can dress it up and wear it out to dinner or the symphony, and the next day wear it as a cover-up at the beach.”

It looks great with flip flops, flats or heels. Vintage necklaces, chunky bangles and scarves can take linen to the office, mall, restaurant and beyond.

And with the old rules out the window, the washable linen is easy to pack and go.

“That’s the beauty of linen these days,” Fleishhacker said.

“The wrinkle is in.”

Linen isn’t just for summer anymore, either.

“It breathes so well,” Robinson said. “With our weather, you can wear it almost year round.”

During the summer, the linen breathes and keeps you cool. In the cooler months, it can provide insulation in layers.

The look

Linen is getting a more tailored silhouette while still incorporating the loose, flowing feel that has made it a summer favorite. Instead of straight tunics and shifts, designers are incorporating handkerchief hems and flounces that float over the hips without ballooning over the stomach, Robinson said. Some tunics have ruching at the waist or layered fabric to accent a scoop neckline to add shape and texture.

“All body types can wear this linen,” Robinson said.

Linen pants are generally going big, and palazzo pant styles are popping up frequently.

Earth, wind and fire colors are the colors for the season’s linens. Neutrals like ivories, khakis and deep browns, blues in shades of washed denim and sky, and brights like crimson, pink, corals and plums are all part of the palette.

Like other fashion trends, the current linen pieces are designed to be layered under and over. It mix and matches well with other fabrics.

Time to buy

This summer may be a partic-

ularly good time to buy linen.

Belgian and Irish linens, the mainstays of the high-end linen world, are still a pretty penny. However, linen is made everywhere, including the United States, and those prices have become much more affordable, said Fleishhacker who carries both import and U.S.made linen clothing.

However, with weather impacting prices for the raw, natural fibers that make linen and rising gas prices, those prices may start edging back up.

“Linen is a good investment because it never goes out of style,” Robinson said. “It’s a classy look.”
