Warriors will again field talented squad Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

Pontotoc football has rapidly risen to a Class 4A power under head coach Jeff Carter, who is entering his fourth season at the helm. The Warriors have put together a 24-4 record over the past two years, including a North Half title game appearance in 2016 and Division 2-4A title a season ago. Heading into this season, the Warriors have the talent returning to continue to build on that. “We feel good all throughout the team right now,” coach Carter said. “We’ve got more guys playing both ways than we would like, but I think they are going to be able to handle it. I think we are in good enough shape. I think this team has got a little swagger. This senior group has been in the system a long time. They know what to do and what to expect. We’ve got some big play type players on both sides of the ball.” On offense, Pontotoc returns lots of talent at the skill positions, starting with what looks to be one of the best ground attacks in the area with run-

ning backs Gabe Harmon and Immanuel Vance back at full strength. Harmon was a 1,974 yard rusher in 2016 before missing five games due to injury at the start of last season. Vance exploded onto the scene with a whopping 699 yards in the first three games in 2017 before an injury hampered him the rest of the year. The injury situation allowed Jemarkus Whitfield to shine, and the sophomore will see time in the backfield as well. Junior Caleb Hobson burst onto the scene last year with 476 receiving yards and 6 TDs, and Carter expects him to have a big year. Junior Peco Townsend is another athletic playmaker on the outside. Tres Vaughn, Cade Armstrong, and D.J. Bean provide good depth. “I feel good about the receiver spot,” Carter said. Senior Justin Carter returns at quarterback. In his first season as the starter he played efficiently, throwing for 1,476 yards and 13 scores against only three interceptions. Hobson will also see time behind center in the wildcat package. “Justin ended the season

(last year) really good,” Carter said. “He has kind of taken charge of the offense. He knows everything that we want to accomplish and is a heady quarterback.” The biggest question is on the offensive line, as Pontotoc has worked since the spring to replace three starters who graduated. “We’ve got some guys that are going to have to play both ways and some guys that don’t have as much experience as you would like, but we are coming along. I think we are going to be fine there,” Carter said. “I feel good about them, but they just haven’t been in the fire yet.” Defensively the Warriors have been a dominant unit. Last season they surrendered a mere 11.6 points a game with three shutouts, but their top five tacklers are all gone. Still, some key pieces return. Senior defensive ends Jay Whitfield, with 8 sacks and 20 quarterback hurries in 2017, and Braden Ball (5 sacks) will provide a strong pass rush. Miles Chewe provides an athletic force on the inside.

Carter feels confident in his secondary. The corner positions are manned by a pair of returning MAC (Mississippi Association of Coaches) 4A All-State players in seniors Ralph Dunn and Caleb Triplett. Dunn had 73 tackles, 15 pass breakups, and 4 interceptions, while Triplett recorded 55 tackles, 13 pass breakups, and 2 interceptions. Vance will play at safety, along with Monte Townsend. Marty Reel will also play a role. Senior Wyatt Stanford will start at linebacker. Players also in the mix at linebacker are Peco Townsend, Jagr Austin, Alfonso Ray, and Kennedy Boyd. On special teams Taylor Hughes emerged as dependable placekicker a season, hitting 33 of her 36 extra points attempts as well as 3-4 field goals. Miles Galloway will start at punter. Hobson will provide a dangerous threat returning kicks. A stout non-division schedule will challenge the Warriors early. In division play, three of their final four games are on the road.

Vikings look to continue winning ways Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

North Pontotoc has developed into a consistent force in Northeast Mississippi High School football, with four 10win seasons and four division titles in the past five years. Heading into 2018, the Vikings have the pieces in place to continue that success. The Viking offense must replace one of the area’s top players in quarterback Clark Mills at the helm. A trio of players have been competing for the job- senior Corley Hooper, sophomore Bo Howell, and freshman T.J. Polk. Hooper and Howell did not practice in the spring due to North’s postseason run in baseball. “We did a lot of seven-on-seven this summer and got some guys comfortable with calls and concepts, but it is different when you put linemen in front of people,” coach Andy Crotwell said. “You have to see it when things are live.” At press time Hooper seemed to have pulled ahead as the front runner. He completed 8 of 14 passes for 63 yards while taking all the snaps

in the Vikings’ preseason jamboree against Calhoun City. The offense will be bolstered by solid group of playmakers. Seniors Brendon Fields (44 receptions, 928 yards, 8 TDs) and Sheffield Anthony (29 catches, 435 yards, 4 TDs) are proven commodities at receiver, and running back Hunter West rushed for 689 yards and 6 scores, averaging 5.9 yards a carry. Work continues on developing the offensive line, which had a lot of turnover from a season ago. “We feel comfortable with those (skill position) guys and know they will continue to contribute well,” Crotwell said. “We have to replace four offensive linemen, so the spring was good for that. We have a general idea of a pecking order there, and hopefully those guys will continue to grow.” A young defense came into its own last season, and it should be a major strength this fall with nine returning starters. “I thought they grew and developed a lot last year and were a completely different unit by the end of the year,”

Crotwell said. “We are expecting them to hit the ground running and to sort of be what we build off of.” Hunter Bolin, Samaud Strong, and Tyler Smith will anchor the defensive line. “Hunter and Samaud both had pretty good years last year in their first year to start,” Crotwell said. “I thought they continued to get better and better. Both of them are now a lot quicker and faster than they were last year, and I am excited to see what they can do. They both had really good springs, and I think they will

be very productive. Tyler also played at at defensive tackle last year when we were in a four-man front.” The linebacking corps should be one of the area’s best, led by Hooper and sophomore Hunter Miles. Hooper was an All-State player last year with 175 stops, 27 TFLs, and 9 forced fumbles. Miles recorded 140 tackles. “Both of them made a lot of plays,” Crotwell said. In the secondary the Vikings bring back all four starters in cornerbacks Kaden Wilson (sophomore) and Ethan Dyer (senior) and safeties Anthony and Hayes Malone (junior). “We really had some guys grow up over the course of the year,” Crotwell said. “By the end of the season I thought that Kaden and Ed (Dyer) were seasoned veterans, and Sheffield and Hayes both made a lot of plays in the run game and pass game.” On special teams, Braxton Sudduth returns to provide a strong and reliable leg at placekicker. Anthony will enter his third year as the punter. Fields will provide a big play threat as the primary return man.

Cougars determined to stay focused, keep success rolling Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

The South Pontotoc Cougars have made an impressive turnaround on the gridiron. Head coach Michael Bradley has changed the culture and thus the results on the field, as South has won 15 games and made consecutive playoff appearances over the past two seasons. This season the Cougars hope to keep that success going, and they have even higher goals that they hope to accomplish. In order to do that, coach Bradley has emphasized his troops keep their noses to the grindstone. “It is human nature to sit back and be proud of yourself after you have accomplished a certain level of success, but the reality is that football is a what have you done for me lately game,” Bradley said. “We have got a lot of good players coming back, a lot of talented guys, and many of them have played a lot of

football for us. They have taken their lumps. We had as a motto, ‘flip the script,’ and we have been able to have some success doing that. We just have to make sure we stay focused on how we got to where we are and the process that we went through to get there.” South returns a talented core of players. Seven starters come back on offense, led by one of the area’s most explosive tailbacks in Eddie Ivy. Ivy rushed for 1,486 and 17 touchdowns in 2017. Four of those starters are on the offensive line, which should be big strength with returning seniors John Barnes, Quincy Dillard, Bailey McVay, and Noah Wortham. Barnes and Dillard will enter their fourth year as starters. Questions still remain at quarterback, as South must replace departed three-year starter Cole Brown. Sophomore Eli Allen and senior Barrett Griggs have been vying for the position, with Allen currently the likely starter.

Senior John Alan Belcher returns at receiver, and 6’6 senior Brett Riley will provide a big target at tight end with a knack for finding the end zone. Riley caught 28 passes for 639 yards and 14 TDs in 2017. “We’ve got a lot of talented players on offense, and hopefully they will kind of surround our quarterback and help him to grow into the position as the season progresses,” Bradley said. Defensively the Cougars should be solid as well. Senior defensive end Will Allen, who had 54 tackles and 3 sacks a season ago, looks set to have a big season. Fellow senior Cayce Sims also returns along the defensive front. The unit will be led by linebacker/safety Barrett Griggs, who led the team with 164 tackles. “Barrett has a knack for finding the ball that you just can’t coach; you either have it or you don’t,” Bradley said.

“We are expecting another big year out of him.” Other returners at linebacker are Barnes and Treylyn Berry. The secondary will be led by a pair of All-Division players in Belcher and Oscar Venegas. Belcher picked off four passes in 2017 with 13 passes defensed. Skylar Holloway returns at free safety. “We have a lot of experience,” Bradley said. “We have to stay focused, stay within ourselves, do what we can do and not beat ourselves. If we can do that we think we have a chance to be really good on defense.” Venegas returns at punter and will also handle placekicking duties. Ivy is always a threat to take it the distance returning kicks. The Cougars will again compete in a tough Division 4-3A that includes three straight games against Houston, Choctaw County, and Aberdeen to close out the year.

Perennial contender Pontotoc readies for 2018 journey Pontotoc Progress

The Pontotoc cross country teams will get their seasons started on Saturday, August 25th at the Myrtle Invitational in New Albany, as the always strong Warriors and Lady Warriors will look to build toward making a run at titles later in the year. “We have had around 40 runners training since the 1st of June, and will have at least 60 when school starts who will be competing this season,” said long-time head coach Mike Bain. Seniors who will be competing in their last season of cross country are Caroline McAuley, Makarthy Lane, Caleb Ruth, Evan McCutchen, Mitchell Cook, and Gabe Henry.

”We are looking forward to watching these seniors compete,” coach Bain said. “I know they are going to provide the leadership our younger runners need.” Girls returning who competed in the state meet last year are Rani Greer, Maclaine Griffith, and Kaylin Simmons. Caroline McCutchen, Maddie Pounders and Blakley Pound were alternates on last year’s state team who also return. “Based on summer workouts, we have an amazing group of junior high girls who can be very competitive. At least 4 will push for a spot on the varsity team before state,” Bain said. “Coach Morgan has done a good job of getting the right girls to give cross country a try.”

Some of the top junior high girls based on times this summer are Haley Barefoot, Katherine Carpenter, Camryn Stephens, Catherine Courtney, Morgan Brownlee, Morgan Hillhouse, Ella Huey, Samantha Vickery, Reanon Hicks, Ava Robbins and Harlee Wilson. Boys returning from last years state meet are Caleb Ruth, Will Porter and Mitchell Cook. “We lost 3 seniors from last year, and another moved away, so we are going to need some guys to step up to make a difference,” coach Bain said. “Evan McCutchen broke his leg last year and was in our top 5. He returns for his senior year. Ethan Carnes has been one of our top guys this summer and has been a pleasant surprise. We will also be counting on

Freddy Porter and Michael Cutler. Cooper Parmer was our top junior high runner last year, and he will push for a spot as a freshman. J.D. Chism is in his first season of cross country, and he has looked good in workouts.” “Just like the girls, we have a great group of junior high boys who are going to be fun to watch this season.” Based on times, some of the top guys are Carter Mann, Jace Clingan, Landon Morgan, Ellis Maffett, Crossland Malone, and Caiden Ivy. “Coach Wanda Hatcher, Brian Morgan and myself are looking forward to our journey through the 2018 season with these kids and watching what they are going to be able to accomplish,” Bain said.

North teams have potential for big years Will Ruff

The North Pontotoc cross country teams will have a familiar face at the helm in 2018, as Tabitha Quillian is back after a three-year hiatus to lead them once again as their coach. She was previously the coach for seven years. “I think taking some time off helped me realize how much I love the sport,” said coach Quillian. “I just love teaching them about cross country and life in general.” Coach Quillian has inherited a program that has a lot of returning runners who have experienced a good deal of success and won at a high level, as both the boys and the girls teams finished fourth in the state in 3A last year. “I think the boys can finish

as a top team in the state and win at least second place,” said coach Quillian. “Our girls did lose a couple of seniors and they are a young team, but I think if we push them the right way they can finish higher in the state because there is some talent there.” Returning for the boys team is senior Jake Reeder, who has been a 3A All-State runner back to back years. He finished 4th individually in the state in 2017 and was individual division champion as well. “We are really looking for him to be a leader for us,” said Quillian. “He encourages the guys and he expects nothing less than a championship.” Austin Davis is back for the Vikings as well after a 3A AllState finish in 2017 that saw him come inside the top 10 at state.

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

“He is a solid piece to our team,” said coach Quillian. “Conner Eddington is also someone who has looked good and made his way into our top ten so far this season.” The Vikings have three other seniors in J.D. Burleson, Christian Mounce, and D’Shawn Prude. Trey Miller also returns after a season in which he made All-Division. Returning for the girls is 3A All-State runner Liz Tovar. She also placed 4th at the state meet and was the individual division champion. “Liz made huge strides for us last year,” said coach Quillian. “We look for her to continue improving and make it into the top 3 overall at state.” Anna Thomas and Karson Mitchell also were All-Division runners and will be back again.

“Our girls can be a top overall team in the state, and I think they will improve and be better,” said coach Quillian. “My goal is to push them to finish that way by building to it, and I think the experienced girls will help us get there.” Coach Quillian has some lofty expectations for the Vikings this season, but if past performance is an indication of future success those expectations can be met. “I want both teams to be able to walk away after its all over and be proud of their accomplishments no matter how they finish,” said Quillian. “I know they will represent North with good sportsmanship, be leaders on and off the field, and work together as a team; and those things will help them be successful in whatever they do in life.”

Cougar runners aiming high in 2018 Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

South Pontotoc is working to became a consistent cross country program. Coach John Wesley Roberts took over two relatively inexperienced teams last year, and the Cougars and Lady Cougars have come a long way from then till now. Participation and interest has grow tremendously, along with results on the course. “I think we had 30 total runners last season, and we had 60 kids come out in the spring,” Roberts said. “It has dwindled over the summer as it always does, but I still have got about 50 right now. That’s a good sign as we try to build up the program.” Both squads should be sol-

id, but the boys have a chance to really make some noise in Class 3A. They developed into a team that finished fifth in the state (out of 17) at the 2017 MHSAA State Cross Country Championships, and six of those final top seven runners return. Junior Austin Simpson was an All-State performer who came in 6th overall. Coming back along with Simpson are junior Cade Jones, sophomores Zach Bennett, Sean Mooneyham, and Rene Martinez, and the team’s lone senior Alex Bejarano. “We’ve got almost everybody back, and we are only going to graduate one this year. We should be stacked both this year and next year,” Roberts said. “I’ve got about eight to

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

10 kids that are going to have to compete to be in that top seven. I think it will be a dogfight to see who runs at state this year, and that will only help our team get better. “Our goal to have them running 20-minute 5Ks by mid-season and work down from there. I told them there is no reason we can’t compete for a state championship this year with the talent we’ve got. I am excited about the boys team, and I think we have got a shot.” The Lady Cougars have a good deal of potential as well. Their top returning girl is eighth grader Leah Montgomery, who finished 19th in 3A and was only around 30 seconds off of an All-State pace. “I think she can make the podium this year and get a

medal, and hopefully we can get a couple more as well,” Roberts said. “We’ve got some runners with some potential. We will just have to see how it goes.” Also returning are sophomore Abbey Waldo, senior Kaitlyn Bennett, and junior Jolee Doss. Senior Leanna Polk is another veteran who will return to action this year after missing the 2017 season due to an injury. Transfer Micahela Bradford will provide a big boost to the squad, as the junior finished 19th in the state in Class 4A last year. The girls also have a 12-member junior high squad that provides a bright future. “I think we’ve got some girls that are going to be committed and stick with it,” Roberts said.

Improved Lady Warriors seek return to postseason Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

Volleyball continues to expand its footprint in Northeast Mississippi, both in the number of schools participating and community interest. Pontotoc has been competing for a long time now, and they are looking to take the jump to a place among the sport’s consistent contenders. This year PHS returns a veteran squad that seeks return to the postseason for the first time since 2014. However, beyond just the number of experienced players returning, the Lady Warriors have made notable improvement across the board since the 2017 campaign.

“We have worked really hard, and we had a lot of girls who have committed to getting better during the offseason,” said head coach Annie McGregor. “We don’t practice during school, so we only practice in during the season. We had some girls commit to playing and practicing volleyball year round, and it really has paid off. Our program has grown leaps and bounds this year.” Lady Warriors have seven upperclassmen, led by a threedeep senior class that includes outside hitter Eliza Hamill, middle blocker Taylor Hughes, and right side hitter McKinley Stegall. Juniors are setter Randa Clair Payne, outside hitter Abigail Anderson, defensive

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

specialist and back-up setter Gabby Golden, and defensive specialist Lauren Trimble. “Our three seniors are just great leaders, and that will be a tremendous asset,” McGregor said. “Our junior class has really stepped up as well in a leadership way. Last year they played varsity, but they were just really young, so we are returning a lot of experience. This summer we came up with team and individual goals, and everybody’s individual ones will help our team reach its goals.” As there can be a thin line in volleyball between a very competitive team and a successful one in the win-loss column, McGregor says the Lady Warriors have made strides in that

area that hopefully will help them prevail in close matches. “We have been trying to work on our mental game,” she said. “For instance, when we scrimmage I will put the JV (junior varsity) up five or six points, and the varsity has to come back and beat them. It is just about digging deep, pushing through, and no matter what the scoreboard says making sure you finish strong. “We have a lot of strong hitters, and we are finishing points rather than just playing to get the ball over the net. We want to make the playoffs this year, and I think we have a group that is committed. We’ve got great team chemistry, and we look really good right now.”

Young Lady Vikings look to make their mark Will Ruff

Sports Writer

The North Pontotoc Lady Vikings will rely upon young players again this year, as they only return one senior in Lindsey Coffey and one junior in Karley Robbins. That, however, doesn’t temper head coach Cee Cee Cavenaugh’s expectations for the 2018 season. “We are young,” Cavenaugh said. “We have six to seven players who have never played slow-pitch before, and I expect them to be successful and play hard. As always our goals are to win the division and make the playoffs.” The Lady Vikings missed the playoffs last season and

34 | Fall Sports 2018

struggled to find consistency. On paper one might view this season as a building year, but coach Cavenaugh isn’t worried. This year’s team is hungry to learn and absorbs everything she is throwing at them so far. “They are learning, working hard and want to learn,” she said. “They are an easy bunch to coach and just need a few games to build their confidence.” The Lady Vikings will be relying upon Coffey, who plays a solid shortstop, for power in the lineup and leadership. “Lindsey has a few college offers, and I expect her to lead us on and off the field,” said coach Cavenaugh. “I expect

her to give us some pop in the middle of the order because after her we have a lot of base hitters.” Karley Robbins will also be looked upon for leadership and offense in the heart of the order. The junior will be manning the circle and first base for North this season along with sophomore Allie Leath, who will spilt time at both positions as well. The Lady Vikings will be using an entirely new outfield as none of the projected starters have played slow-pitch before, but they bring plenty of fast pitch experience to the field. “Tiffany Bishop, Tayler Bishop, and Haisley Coker will be in the outfield for us, and

they will be fine,” Cavenaugh said. “They have been playing softball for a while and should not have any issues out there.” Brooke McBrayer and Lexi Walker will round out the infield for the Lady Vikings. “Brooke will play second base for us and Lexi will play third,” said coach Cavenaugh. The Lady Vikings are looking to find more success this fall and seem to just need some time to gain experience for that to happen. “I think if they can gain some confidence and get a little momentum I see us as always having a chance to win, because we will be fighting in every game we play,” Cavenaugh said.

Lady Cougars will be team to be reckoned with once again Will Ruff

Sports Writer

Last season the South Pontotoc Lady Cougars, always a major player in the Northeast Mississippi softball scene, made the playoffs once again before dropping the deciding game of their best of three series to West Lauderdale. This season the Lady Cougars return a lineup stocked full of experience and confidence, and they are looking to improve upon last year’s success. “We are returning a lot of starters who practice hard and

play hard day in and day out,” said head coach Adam Patterson. “I fully expect us to have a good year because of the leadership on this team.” South is returning nine starters, led by Destiny Catledge, who smashed 21 home runs a year ago, and starting pitcher Allie Gaspard, who has won 60 games over the last three years in Springville. Also coming back is third baseman Lexie Ward and second baseman Mattie Pilcher. Both hit over .500 last season at the plate. “Allie has really matured and is mentally tougher than she

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

was a year ago,” said coach Patterson. “Destiny brings a lot of power to our lineup, and Mattie and Lexie just find ways to get on base for us and hit it all over the field.” Emma Carwile and Sara Brown will be looked upon to produce at the plate once again, as well as other returning starters Maisy Canerdy, Rebecca Pilcher, Saylor Fallin, and Allyson Harrison. “Both of them (Carwile and Brown) were hitting real well at the end of the season for us last year, and I think they can be just as good the entire season this

year,” Patterson said. “We also have some good young players coming up that can contribute as well as long as they follow the leadership of our seniors.” Coach Patterson did not shy away from talking about making a deep postseason run this season, but he thinks timing will be everything for that to happen. “I think we will have a great year if they get their heads right, come together, and play like we know they can,” said coach Patterson. “If they can get hot at the right time we can make a run at it.”
