Interested in hosting your wedding amidst beautiful sun-dappled trees? Look no further than The Woodlands of Farmington. John and Brenda Hayes constructed The Woodlands in 2019 just 10 minutes away from downtown Corinth. Their goal was to offer a venue with a classic southern ambiance and all the amenities to ensure
a less stressful approach to wedding planning. The Woodlands offers an outdoor chapel surrounded by towering trees and an indoor reception hall equipped with a caterer’s kitchen and enough round tables with white chairs to comfortably seat up to 180 guests. Bridal parties can prepare for the day in the privacy of their own suites. White linen tablecloths and the recording of your wedding ceremony are available upon request. Is this beginning to sound like the perfect place to host your next special event? Call John and/or Brenda at 662-255-2626/662-415-1602 to schedule a tour.

HELLO FROM THE EDITOR
D
ear Reader,
To some, February feels like a forgotten month – a quick flash of pink confetti hearts between the busiest holiday of the year and the genesis of spring. For our team, February means the release of one of our favorite annual issues. Our crew spends much of the editorial year dreaming up ways to serve the newly engaged in our community. We’ve scouted cityscapes to plan bachelorette trips within, designed lavish cocktail menus and interviewed industry experts. Even still, every year, we find new people and places to adore. What astounds me most is Mississippi’s long list of incredible folks, from two brides who thrifted and redesigned their gowns (page 35) to a couple who reclaimed a historic venue (page 53). Creativity and joy fill our state, and I’m so glad we call Mississippi home.

CHEAT'S CRÈME BRÛLÉE
FOUR-INGREDIENT PAIN AU CHOCOLAT Serves: 6 INGREDIENTS 1 box (2 sheets) puff pastry dough 1 tablespoon melted butter 7 ounces German’s sweet baking chocolate, broken into squares 1 egg Flaky salt (optional) DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 400° F. On a well-floured sur-
face, unfold both sheets of dough. Brush one sheet with melted butter and place the second sheet on top. Trim the edges so they’re even, and slice the dough 6 strips, roughly 2-inches wide. To shape the pastries, place one square of baking chocolate at the short end of the dough. Roll until the chocolate is covered, then repeat with a second square of chocolate. Roll the pastry closed.
Brush each pastry with egg and top with flaky salt. Bake for 10-12 minutes. CHEAT’S CRÈME BRÛLÉE Serves: 2 INGREDIENTS 1 3.4 oz. package butterscotch instant pudding 1 cup cold whole milk 1 cup cold heavy whipping creme 2 tablespoons white sugar DIRECTIONS
Combine the pudding mix, milk and heavy whipping cream in a large bowl. Stir until no clumps remain. Cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Spoon the custard into two 5-ounce ramekins. Using a sifter, evenly coat the top of the custard with white sugar. Place underneath a broiler. Check crème brûlée every thirty seconds, removing when the tops are browned. What We're Reading
BOOKS
by LINDSAY PACE
Each month, we share what we love about the stories we’re reading.
Timothy Pakron's Mississippi Vegan
Bruce Feiler’s Life is in the Transitions
Mississippi expat Timothy Pakron joins a long line of southern chefs who create cuisine as rich as the state’s literature. His joyful tone contrasts against bold visual imagery that tells stories of native ingredients like pecans, sweet potatoes, collards and honeysuckle.
In his latest novel, social researcher Bruce Feiler explores common stories and themes that contextualize our lives (think: changing jobs, experiencing the death of a loved one). He shares scenes from dozens of interviews, which he conducted in all 50 states, to argue that transitions happen to everyone — and that our skills for dealing with them are where life and meaning are found.
Alice Walker’s Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart Walker’s first bilingual poetry collection explores the desires of marginalized individuals. Her work accounts for grief and oppression that is often overlooked, and suggests that the path toward a brighter future involves taking action against inequality. M M &M

WHAT TO WEAR: wedding edition text and portrait by LINDSAY PACE
1
BLACK-TIE A black-tie dress code is considered the most formal and leaves little room for interpretation. Weddings with this dress code typically occur around or after 6:00 p.m. Tuxedos — not suits — are in order, along with gowns that touch the top of the shoe or floor.
Most couples include the event’s dress code on your invitation, but if not, be sure to check their wedding website for details. Knowing exactly what to wear to a wedding can be tricky, but that’s where our guide comes into play.
2
BLACK-TIE OPTIONAL A black-tie optional dress code might sound confusing. Worse, it’s easy to worry about under- or overdressing. To determine your choice, consider the time of the wedding. If it’s in the evening, opt for a gown or tuxedo; if it’s in the early or late afternoon, a dark suit with loafers or a mid-length cocktail dress with heels are considered appropriate.
3
COCKTAIL Since cocktail attire is more casual than black-tie, guests have more room to play with hemlines and patterns. Tuxes and floor-length dresses are not required. Rather, opt for longer skirts, formal jackets or an elegant jumpsuit. Embellish your outfit with fine jewelry and upscale textures like satin.
4
CASUAL A casual dress code doesn’t mean that anything goes, but it is certainly more relaxed than black-tie or cocktail attire. Short hemlines, playful necklines and trendy patterns are appropriate. However, steer clear of jeans, athletic wear or tennis shoes. M

invitations text and photos by LINDSAY PACE
Whether you consider yourself crafty or not, you can make stunning invitations. The key is to layer different types of paper to create depth and visual interest. We printed these invitations in two phases: First, a bold, floral design on thick, linen cardstock; Second, thin, printable vellum topped with invitation details. We used a pearl brad to secure the two for professional-grade invitations.
Materials: Microsoft Word, InDesign or Canva A floral pattern* An invitation design* Linen cardstock, 80lb. Printable vellum paper A printer A paper cutter Pearl brads Directions: 1. Choose the size of your invitation. In
an editing software, create two templates that correspond to the size (one template for cardstock, one for vellum). Ensure you select crop marks in your printer’s dialog box, and print true-to-size. 2. Place a floral design onto the cardstock template. We recommend choosing a design that corresponds with your wedding colors. For an elegant
touch, use the design as a border. 3. Type your wedding details into your vellum template. For a polished invitation, pair serif fonts with calligraphic fonts. Print your invitation details onto vellum. 4. Using a paper cutter, trim the invitations at the crop marks. Layer the vellum on top of the cardstock. Pin together at the top with a pearl
*If you’re not a design wizard, no worries! Plenty of websites offer invitation templates, some only a few dollars a piece. We recommend browsing Etsy or Templett for inspiration. M

upelo native Emily Robbins embodies dynamic. She speaks quickly, her energy and optimism unyielding. As a professional videographer, it is no wonder she understands forward motion. She began Finch Collective, her professional wedding videography and photography business, by chance. She’s quick to tell you that her story does not involve growing up under the method of an artist-turned-parent. She didn’t toddle around with a disposable Kodak. But the 27 year old has had a long-standing interest in the craft. Robbins began over a decade ago, studying under Saltillo photographer Deanna Knight. The gig was a way to earn cash, and though she had an interest in the craft, she didn’t yet have the drive to pursue it on her own. That is, until her mom called her. “Do you want to video a wedding?” her mom asked. “I don’t know,” Robbins replied. Robbins filmed the video anyway. The 2018 event would become the first in a long line of work she has produced for couples across the southeast, and has given her an outlet to
cultivate creative confidence full-time. She’s learned to think horizontally instead of vertically, and how to construct narratives in cohesive ways. What she loves most about her work is its ability to bring one’s senses forward. Whether it’s the sound of a bubbling fountain in the courtyard or a celebrant pronouncing a marriage, she believes the elements of video bring viewers back to a singular moment. Robbins is aware that video can also preserve the essence of others. Former clients have expressed their gratitude for segments including loved ones who have passed away – that they can see them, hear them, perceive them again. Like a finger on a pulse, filmography renders up a life. Once a year, Robbins and her husband, Kurt, make time to do the very same. They remember their promises, the lilt of their vows as they were spoken. This reminds her of the power of her work. “Videography brings the wedding day back to life in a way that photo doesn't,” Robbins said. “It’s documentary. It's voice.” M

hrift stores contain many things: regular, everyday clothes. Unique finds. For Myriam Coker, that unique find was what many brides search for -- and spend hundreds of dollars on: a wedding dress. “Thrifting is always so fun for me because it’s kind of like a treasure hunt,” Coker said. “You never know what you’ll find.” In the spring of 2018, Coker and her sisters decided to go to City Thrift in search of whatever caught their eye. They didn’t know that Coker would be leaving with a one-of-a-kind dress. “What’s so funny was that my boyfriend and I weren’t even engaged, nor were we thinking about getting married anytime soon when I found the dress,” Coker said. “Yet, when I saw it, I just loved it so much that it didn’t matter. I had to have it. And so, I went ahead and got it.”
A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH: myriam coker

This spread: Myriam Coker found her wedding dress in a thirft store. Nearly thirty hours of alterations were given to the dress.
Given the timing wasn’t right, Coker put the dress on the back burner, storing it in her closet for years. When her boyfriend, Brooks Coker, proposed two years later, Coker already knew where to turn. That didn’t mean everyone was on board with the plan. “I think my friends and family just thought it was an impulse buy,” Coker said. “They didn’t put much stock into me using it as my wedding dress until I pulled it back out of the closet.” While it took others a bit longer to see Coker’s vision, she was happy to be able to share this experience with her sisters. Being the oldest of seven and the first to walk down the aisle, she worried about including everyone in her wedding planning process. Yet, as luck would have it, they were all there with her when she discovered the dress.s. “This was the first wedding in the family and being able to share that with them – them being there with me at the thrift store, when I tried it on after alterations, and them also seeing it at the wedding – was really special,” Coker said. “I loved that they could go through the entire process with me.”
38
M&M
When it came to alterations, Coker turned to her aunt Deborah, a skilled seamstress who’d done work on wedding dresses before. At ease, she knew if anyone could take on remaking an old gown, it would be her aunt. After collaborating on the overall design, Deborah got to work, spending upwards of thirty hours in alterations. For the most part, Coker stuck to the original structure of the dress, keeping as much from it that she could -- though she did cut out the shoulder pads. “My guess, from the shoulder pads alone, was that it was probably from the ‘80s and a dress that somebody’s loved one made for them,” Coker said. “It had no tags or labels on it which is kind of what drew me to it.” The dress also had some intricate beading Coker made sure to keep. This made alterations a bit tricky: her aunt had to take the beads off in some places before cutting excess fabric, and later reattach the beads. It was a long process, but what was once a discarded dress is now a modern wedding gown “I wouldn’t change a thing about it,” Coker said. “That dress was everything I had hoped and dreamed for.” M

LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER: michaela lyle
ichaela Lyle knew from a young age that she wanted to use her mother’s wedding dress. She’d always loved it. Whenever Lyle would look at her mother’s wedding pictures, she’d listen to her mom talk about the dress and the feeling she had when she looked at it. “She’s never said, ‘I wish I’d gone with a different dress’ or ‘Man, that dress really didn’t hold up to the test of time,’” Lyle said. “It was genuinely really beautiful in its own way.” When Lyle got engaged in 2021, she was quick to ask her mother if she’d be willing to part with it, letting her wear or alter the dress for her own wedding. “The joy on her face told me everything I needed to know,” Lyle said. “My mom wanted me to have a dress that I felt as in love with as she did her own.”

Opening Page: Michaela and Chase Lyle on their wedding day. This spread, clockwise from left: Michaela Lyle in her mother's gown, altered into a modern look; Michaela's mother, Lisa Cooper, on her wedding day, wearing the original version of the gown.
However, her mother didn’t account for the amount of damage it’d undergone after years living in storage. “It’d been through both fire and water damage, and it was slightly yellowed,” Lyle said. “When we pulled it back out after so many years, I could see it slightly broke my mom’s heart because that dress was really special to her.” Her mother stayed positive, though, offering up other solutions, such as incorporating a piece of lace into whatever dress Lyle would decide on, or making a handkerchief out of what good material was left. First, though, Lyle would take the dress to the dry cleaners on the off chance it would make a difference. “I don’t know what magic they pulled,” Lyle said. “But when it came back, it looked almost completely brand new.” There were only a couple of pieces of lace that couldn’t get completely cleaned after the first round. Lyle took the dress home and, with her mom’s help, tried it on. “It was a little big but super workable,” Lyle said. “The fact that the dress was even usable was incredible, but we were both laughing because it was so completely out of my style and the look I wanted.” What Lyle wanted was something simple and classy; something that never went out of style. Her mother's dress was dated: a stereotypical, late ‘80s gown with puffy sleeves. However, the more they looked at it, the more they thought about alterations. Part of those alterations was adding in a unique touch to check that “something blue” box. Using damaged pieces of fabric, Lyle and her mother discussed the possibility of

incorporating blue into the train of the dress. Seamstress Frankie Crabb brought some blue lace up the train a bit to create a waterfall effect, mirroring the dress’s scalloped edges. When Lyle’s train flared, people could see a subtle touch of blue. “It was just gorgeous and honestly my favorite part,” Lyle said. “I felt like that was my personality, just a classic flare.” While not necessarily a traditional family heirloom, the dress is something that can continue to be passed down in the future. “Now, I have a dress I can always look back on, just like my mothers,” Lyle said. Her mother’s dress wasn’t the only dress used in her wedding weekend, either. Lyle’s grandmother asked Lyle if she’d like to incorporate her old wedding dress in some way too Once again, Lyle sent it to Crabb, who converted the dress into a skirt, which Lyle wore at her rehearsal dinner. “Ultimately my whole wedding weekend was just very sentimental,” Lyle said. “I had both my mom and my grandmother with me. My something old, new, borrowed -and of course, the blue lace counts for my something blue.” Lyle wouldn’t change anything about her experience, loving her dress and the journey it took to get to that final look. “I know in my heart, after my husband and I have been married for fifty plus years, I’ll love it then, too,” Lyle said. “It’s one of those things that I have absolutely no regrets on.” M

assandra and Matt Maharrey met in a laundromat parking lot. To be exact, it was a laundromat in Fulton, Mississippi, where their friends from Itawamba Community College gathered to play guitar. On the night the couple met, their friends mysteriously disappeared. “We still don't know if they abandoned us on purpose,” Matt said. The duo has come a long way since the 2013 encounter. They traded laundromat lots for Alaskan glaciers (one of which Matt proposed on), and are known by his father as “the adventurers.” A love for architecture and history captivates them both. For that reason, New Orleans had always seemed a fitting place for their vows. Not to mention, their first trip together was to the city. Upon their March 2021 engagement, though, they reconsidered the idea. Protecting friends and family from pandemic travel was a priority. They decided upon All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Tupelo, a space that fosters their newly-kindled faith. The task, then, was to bring New Orleans to Mississippi. The simplest way to accomplish that was through food and decor: they served shrimp poboys and red beans and rice; Mardis Gras beads were placed throughout the reception hall; French Quarter-style lamp posts served as centerpieces for each table. The showstopper, though, would be a Second Line.

She invited women in attendance to pull the ribbons, releasing a small charm which determined their fortune. This practice, known as cake pulling, is widely associated with New Orleans; the couple decorated tabletops with lamposts, reminscent of ones found in the French Quarter; the couple decorated their parasols for their second line tradition.

A Second Line is a New Orleans tradition with ties to West Africa. In any context, whether funerals or weddings, Second Lines are joyful celebrations of life. The First Line is composed of the parade leader or grand marshal, while the Second Line is composed of those parading behind. Participants wave handkerchiefs and carry parasols – two accessories that distinguish this style of parade from others. As a gift to the couple, Matt’s father rounded up a jazz band – a crew of young musicians from the area – to lead a First Line up and down Jefferson street, ending at the church’s reception hall. “Most people thought, ‘What in the world? Why are we parading?’” Cassandra said. “But I love the tradition. It’s a celebration.” When they returned to the parish hall, Cassandra asked for female volunteers. Fifteen women circled around her cake and were asked to pull a small, pink ribbon from the bottom of it – another New Orleans style practice called cake pulling. At the end of the ribbon was a small charm, which they would exchange for a fortune from Cassandra. The couple says they wouldn’t change a thing about their wedding day, apart from making it longer. A contrast from their quiet first encounter, their wedding was a call to lean into joie de vivre. “I've never seen some of our older relatives laugh and smile so much in my life,” Cassandra said. M

hen Kathey Garrett’s daughter and son-in-law, Mary Sydney and Michael Reist, were planning their wedding, they knew they wanted their dog, Archie, to be part of their big day in every way. What they didn’t count on was rain. “At the event, A rchie went from groomsmen, to fathers to mothers – he was a wet mess," Garrett said. "The groom's father almost missed the mother-son dance at the reception because he was taking Archie away from the crowd." That's when Garrett realized they really could have used someone to help guide and take care of the beloved pet during the May 2019 celebration. “That’s where the concept started,” she said. "I started doing some research. There were companies out there that took care of pets during weddings, but none in Mississippi." Garrett had fostered pets before in her home, so getting re-certified in pet CPR was easy. Next she took some business and marketing classes at Ole Miss to freshen those skills. And in August 2020, Wagnolia Bells was born. The business is named for the Garretts' beagle, Magnolia Belle, who was 17 when she died a couple of years ago. Garrett's younger daughter, Shurden, suggested changing Magnolia to Wagnolia and dropping the e from Belle and adding an s, to echo the idea of wedding bells. "I decided I didn't want to be a typical pet sitter," Garrett said. "I wanted to give brides peace of mind that their pets were taken care on their wedding day or wedding weekend. Our focused mission is to give the bridal couple the knowledge that their pets are wellcared for and loved while they're celebrating." Garrett, or one of her crew, chaperoned dogs at six weddings in the first year, then did another 20 in 2021. So far, she's got 16 weddings lined up for 2022. "I need the bride, or groom, to contact me ASAP," Garrett said. "We're already turning people away. This has gotten bigger than I thought it would, but I knew there was a need because I lived it." Garrett said the first thing she does when she meets with the bridal couple and their pet is determine the behavior of the dog, or dogs.
"How do they react in a crowd or around people?" Garrett said. "How do they react around kids, especially, and men? Are they jumpers? Are they barkers? Do they pull on a leash? Are they comfortable riding in a car?" Sometimes, a bride doesn't know how involved she wants her pet to be in the wedding. Maybe it's just there for photos; maybe it's there to walk down the aisle. Garrett helps with those decisions. "I'm basically the event planner for the pet," Garrett said. "We pick the pet up, transport it safely to and from the venue, and coordinate with the event planner and photographer so I know when and where to be." Garrett said if a dog is calm enough, it can walk down the aisle and stay with the couple during the ceremony, or be taken aside. "Some dogs stand where guests enter and greet the guests, then we take the dog away to a quiet area and meet up for photos afterward," said. "And we're not just limited to dogs. We haven't had a cat yet, but I've been waiting for one. But the same rules apply – the pet has to be on a leash." Another mission of Wagnolia Bells is to help other pets. Ten percent of each custom package is donated to an animal shelter or rescue of the couple's choice. Garrett and her chaperones – she has six and is looking for 10 more – are all pet CPR certified. They have done weddings in Oxford, Hernando, Memphis, Jackson, Nashville, Birmingham – and places in between. They've ha nd led sma l l dogs, l i ke Pomeranians, and big dogs, like Great Danes. The ratio is usually one chaperone per pet, although a chaperone might handle two small pets at once. "No one has been bitten yet, but another chaperone and I were pulled down into chairs once by a dog," Garrett said. "But it was a funny pull-down. We laugh about it now." Garrett, who was a teacher for many years and also worked in retail, and her husband, Jim, moved from Charlottesville, Virginia, to Oxford in 2016 for his job. This is now their home. "I love what I do," Garrett said. "If you love what you do, you do it more and more. I get to spend time planning, and I get to work with pets. It's a dream come true." M

or the past six years, Jerri Anne and Gil Davis have restored The Simmons House, a historic Greek Revival home in Water Valley, and the venue’s surrounding properties . The goal? To support Water Valley’s growth. The house, originally built by Dr. William Simmons in 1871, needed a great deal of care to bring it back to its former glory. This is part of the reason why it’s taken the Davises so long to finish its restoration. During the first year of the repair, people would often stop to talk to those working. Past owners -- and even strangers -- would come with all sorts of stories about the house and those who used to live there. Because of this, the Davises wanted to create a space that Water Valley could be proud of: A place to bring people in, have rooms for them to gather, and enjoy good company.

“It needed people in it, people to admire it and to love it,” Jeri Anne said. “For that reason, we wanted to preserve everything about it.” Soon enough, they found a patient, committed team dedicated to working with them day in and day out. “They were such team players with every detail on the project,” Jeri Anne said. “Without them, we never would have gotten as far as we have.” In the past five years, the Davis’s main focus has been getting the house in the shape and condition they knew it was worthy of. It wasn’t until 2021 that they started to focus on the venue itself, officially opening in June. “Work like this is never really complete,” Davis said. “But it’s really great to see a piece of our history here in Water Valley come back to life.”

"There's a story in every room." A multipurpose venue, The Simmons House offers a beautiful backdrop for weddings, family events, rehearsal dinners and get-togethers. Four properties split the venue: The Simmons House, The Lee House, The Williams House, and The Charlotte’s Guest House. These houses offer overnight lodgings, and between them, can comfortably accommodate twenty-five guests. The Simmons House also has robust gardens surrounding the venue that took nearly two years to complete. Restoring as much as they could within and outside of the house, the Davises updated this unique venue with crystal chandeliers, marbled bathrooms, glass showers and unlacquered brass knobs. The couple even kept some of the original furniture and woodwork. “There’s a story in every room,” Jerri Ann said. “We’ve done the work, now we’re ready to share it.” M

A COMPREHENSIVE GLOSSARY of wedding terms Unless you’ve watched a ton of “My Fair Wedding” with David Tutera, wedding-speak can be a little confusing. We broke down some of the most common terms you’ll hear again and again as you plan your big day. by LINDSAY PACE APPLIQUE Appliques are decorative motifs needled onto wedding dresses or veils. Commonly, they’re made of lace and include embellishments such as faux pearls. BUSTLE Bustling a dress refers to the process of hooking or tying fabric from the train to the back of the dress to keep it from dragging throughout the reception. CANAPE An hors d’oeuvre, a canape is small piece of puff pastry or cracker topped with savory food. They are typically eaten in one bite and are often tray-served during cocktail hour. CELEBRANT A celebrant is someone who performs a rite or ritual. During a wedding, a celebrant officiates the couple’s vows. DAY-OF COORDINATOR A day-of coordinator ensures the wedding day is perfectly executed. They keep everyone from the bridal to vendors on schedule. ESCORT CARD Less formal than place cards, which direct guests to a specific seat at the reception, escort cards direct guests to a table. EXIT This term is largely used by photographers and videographers. It refers to how the couple is celebrated as they leave for their getaway vehicle. Often, guests light sparklers or throw lavender at the couple, who run between rows of friends and family.

The object forces a shaped shadow onto the wall or dancefloor, typically shown at receptions. The pattern is most often the couple’s last name or monogram. HEAD TABLE A head table is designated for the bridal party to sit at during a formal meal or reception. INVITATION SUITE An invitation suite refers to a couple’s entire collection of wedding stationery. Basic invitation suites include stamps, wax seals, envelopes, an invitation, and an RSVP card. LETTERPRESS Letterpress is a printing technique that leaves paper goods with the impression of text, either raised or indented. It is typically more expensive than other printing methods, but is considered a luxury product. PROCESSION The procession is the first part of the wedding ceremony. Immediate family members, bridal party members and the couple walk down the aisle. The processional refers to the music played during the procession. SIGNATURE COCKTAIL A signature cocktail is a beverage chosen by the couple, served at the reception. Often, the cocktail is named after a hobby, pet or alma mater. WEDDING BREAKFAST Not literally a morning meal, a wedding breakfast is the first meal served to the couple and their guests following the ceremony. This term is most often used in the United Kingdom.
