What We're Reading

BOOKS

by LINDSAY PACE

Each month, we share what we love about the stories we’re reading.

Timothy Pakron's Mississippi Vegan

Bruce Feiler’s Life is in the Transitions

Mississippi expat Timothy Pakron joins a long line of southern chefs who create cuisine as rich as the state’s literature. His joyful tone contrasts against bold visual imagery that tells stories of native ingredients like pecans, sweet potatoes, collards and honeysuckle.

In his latest novel, social researcher Bruce Feiler explores common stories and themes that contextualize our lives (think: changing jobs, experiencing the death of a loved one). He shares scenes from dozens of interviews, which he conducted in all 50 states, to argue that transitions happen to everyone — and that our skills for dealing with them are where life and meaning are found.

Alice Walker’s Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart Walker’s first bilingual poetry collection explores the desires of marginalized individuals. Her work accounts for grief and oppression that is often overlooked, and suggests that the path toward a brighter future involves taking action against inequality. M M &M
