UM senior class president ready for next chapter

With the University of Mississippi commencement approaching on May 14, the president of the class of 2016 is preparing for one of the busiest days of her life. Mary Kate Berger knew that running for senior class president would mean making a speech at graduation in front of faculty, classmates, family and friends. Writing the two-minute speech gave her time to reflect on the class of 2016’s final year at the university.

“I knew that I was going to speak in the Grove ceremony at graduation,” she said.

“I finished writing it and it really gave me a chance to reflect on the work of my class this year. Of course I’m nervous! I have to speak right before Tom Brokaw.”

All of the class officers sit on the Grove stage with golden stoles around their robes. Berger will begin her day by meeting at the student union around 7:15 a.m.

Immediately following the Grove ceremony, she will be attending the Alumni Association champagne toast, followed by a brunch reception for Lott Leadership students. Then she has her Liberal Arts ceremony at 2:30 p.m., and after that she plans on attending the Ole Miss-Kentucky baseball game before heading to dinner on the square with family and friends.

One of her favorite memories while at Ole Miss was the Alabama 2014 game in Oxford.

“That day was seriously the best day of my life. I don’t even think my wedding, or the birth of my first child can top that day.

It was such a perfect day,” Berger said.

Caterpillar to shut down plant in 2017

An economic downturn in mining equipment, and heavy machinery equipment overall, now has repercussions locally.

Caterpillar announced Thursday that it will be shutting down five facilities, including the one located in the Max Hipp Industrial Park. According to the information released by Caterpillar, a total of 820 positions across two divisions, and five states, were affected.

The local plant, damaged by a tornado five years ago and since re-built and re-structured, has been a steady employer in Oxford since the late 1990s.

Caterpillar started its current restructuring plan back in 2015. Oxford will remain open through 2016, and close its ISCD facility that produces hose couplings and move some operations into Caterpillar’s Menominee, Michigan, facility. The remainder of operations will be transitioned to suppliers. The closure will impact around 240 positions.

Production is expected to continue into 2017. The final transition for the consolidation is expected to be completed

within the next 12-18 months.

Caterpillar said in the release it “recognizes these restructuring actions are painful for its dedicated workforce, their families and the impacted communities.

“The decisions are difficult; however, it is necessary to have the right capacity in place for the tough market conditions the company is facing.”

Other cities affected in the latest decision were Jacksonville, Florida, Morganton, North Carolina, Newberry, South Carolina and Mossville, Illinois.

Since last September, restructuring has resulted in the elimination of approximately 5,300 positions through the first quarter of 2016. Including today’s announcements, the company has announced the closure or consolidation of about 20 facilities, which represents about a 7 percent reduction of Caterpillar’s manufacturing footprint.

The 21st Double Decker Arts Festival was just held in Oxford, with Caterpillar serving as the title sponsor for the event.

LOU Pride Weekend finalizes schedule of events

The first-ever LOU Pride Weekend has finalized their schedule for the weekend dedicated to celebrating Oxford’s LGBT+ community.

The weekend starts on Thursday with a Code Pink Dance Party at Proud Larry’s with special DJ guests and dance performers throughout the evening. The event is open to anyone over the age of 18, and there will be a $5 cover at the door. Festivities are set to begin at 9 p.m.

Friday at noon, the University of Mississippi’s Center for Inclusion will hold the inaugural Lavender Graduation honoring LGBT+ students who are completing a degree at the school. The graduation is being held in the Student Union Ballroom and ceremonies are expected to last one hour.

Later that night, there will be a drag show at Proud Larry’s beginning at 9 p.m.

The event is titled GoDiva’s Eleganza Extravaganza and will feature some of the top drag performers from the region. Again, this event is open to anyone over the age of 18, and there will be a $5

cover at the door.

Saturday at 2:30 is when the parade will be happening. Those participating in the parade will be lined up in the Ford Center’s parking lot beginning at 2. The parade route has been slightly altered to where it will begin at the old train depot, go down East Jackson Avenue, around the Square and then west down University Avenue back to the old train depot. Immediately after the parade, a party will be held at Lamar Lounge. Everyone is invited.

The last event of the weekend is a screening of several films about what it means to be gay in the Deep South. This screening is a collaborative effort with the Oxford Film Festival and the Crossroads Film Society. The screening is free of charge, open to the public and will be held at Shelter on Van Buren at 4 p.m.

In addition to the screening, the film festival will also have a float entered in the parade, paying homage to a classic scene from the movie “Pricilla, Queen of the Desert.” Hospitality Coordinator with the Oxford Film Festival Kayleigh Graham

said they chose to enter a float in the parade because the film festival is about letting people tell their stories.

They want to hear about the world from everyone’s perspectives, and that includes the LGBT+ community.

“The Oxford Film Festival works with many different sponsors and filmmakers from all over the country,” she said. ”Part of our mission here is to include diversity. That means everyone.”

Matt Kessler has been working with the Sarah Isom Center for on the weekendlong event and has really been the driving force behind much of the planning.

He wants everyone to know that they are welcome to come and march in the parade, regardless of background and personal identity. For those that do not want to march, Kessler said that any support in the form of a crowd showing up anywhere along the parade route would be greatly appreciated. And The Echo drops debut album

Morgan Pennington hovers over a synthesizer, leaning into a microphone and begins to croon mournful lyrics as fuchsia lights come up from behind her, sparsely illuminating a cheering and dancing crowd packed into Proud Larry’s to celebrate the release of And The Echo’s first album.

And the Echo is comprised of Pennington on synthesizer and vocals with Winn McElroy on keys. The band fell together in an unusual way. The pair met through a mutual friend when Pennington was looking for someone to produce and acoustic EP for her. McElroy owned and operated Black Wings Studio where he has worked with artists like Light Beam Rider and The Weeks.

It was a frustrating session. Neither of them liked the acoustic vibe they were getting, so they decided to try mixing it up with electronics. That’s when they knew they had something.

They began working on the EP during the summer of 2013. They had their first show together the following year, but it came about in an unorthodox way. Pennington was asked to play the 2014 Double Decker Arts Festival. She had been playing a few shows around town and the EP had just been released and they wanted to feature a local artist. Pennington immediately turned them down.

“You called me in January,” McElroy recalled, pointing to Pennington as she sat across from him at a table outside High Point Coffee. “We were just chatting on the phone, and she said, ‘So they asked me to play Double Decker’ and I was like oh wow and she said, ‘But I said no, there’s now way I can do that live.’

I said, ‘No. Call them back.

Let’s put a band together, and let’s do this.’ And we did. That was the birth.”

There were a lot of logistics to work out, but they did. The spot was still available and they took it. It was for 10:30 the Saturday morning of Double Decker and they got on stage and performed in front of a huge crowd. They were

This self titled album is the band’s debut record. scared and weren’t sure how they did. But after the performance, several people were coming up to them and telling how much they loved it. So two kept going, all the way to the stage of Proud Larry’s last week where they celebrated the release of their self-titled album.

And The Echo is not a band made for casual listening, their music is best consumed by being completely immersed in the experience of it. Having them playing in the background of a car ride is not an option. That is why they are so popular when playing local venues. That is why there was barely room to breathe at their album release: Pennington and McElroy know how to do live shows. Every live performance comes with a light show, lavender, turquoise and fuchsia lights strobe out in across the crowd, thrumming with the beat of the music.

You are not going to get from the album what you get from the live shows. The same can be said about any musician, but that definitely doesn’t mean their

Berger got to meet Shepard Smith, who was also on the sidelines that day, and said he was the good luck charm for that game.

“He was so nice and so awesome, we kept teasing back and fourth that he was the good luck charm for Ole Miss that game,” she said. “I got my photo with him, and that’s something I’ll always treasure about my time in Oxford and Ole Miss.”

Lucinda Williams to perform at The Lyric

Three-time Grammy Award winning singer Lucinda Williams is set to perform at The Lyric next Friday.

Williams is no stranger to Mississippi. The legendary folk singer spent time growing up in both Vicksburg and Jackson. Her father used to teach at Millsaps College.

She has come through Oxford several times during her life and career. One year, while playing the Double Decker Arts Festival, her tour manager pointed out a painting hanging in Southside Gallery.

Williams instantly loved it and bought the piece. She said that that trip to Oxford stands out in her mind because of how much she loved that painting. She describes herself as a longtime fan of folk art and the painting she purchased from Southside is still one of her favorites. She said she loves Oxford and looks forward to returning.

Williams is a legend in her industry. She began her career in 1979 with her first album entitled “Ramblin’.” She has gone on to release 12 more albums, and has performed all over the world. Time Magazine named the artist “America’s Best Songwriter” in 2002.

Despite all of her success and awards, Williams said the biggest achievement of her career is the fact that she still has one.

“It’s probably that I’ve come this far, that I wasn’t just some over night thing,” she said. “I feel like I’m at a really good place. I still have things I want to do, different kinds of albums I’d like to do. But Nothing was going to stop them. We grabbed our equipment and moved out of the way. Then I saw the goal post starting to go down.”

One of her accomplishments during her presidency was meeting the class goal of $10,000 to the class of 2016 gift at The Pavillion.

The class sponsored three flagpoles in front of the brand new Ole Miss basketball facility. She successfully ran a campaign called “flagship seniors” since their class was the first class able to use it before graduating.

Anyone could donate $20.16 for the class.

“I really appreciate the class for pitching in and leaving our legacy to the university,” she said. “I’m also really proud of the changes the university made during our time here.

I’m kind of anomaly. I’m a woman, 63, out here touring my ass off. My voice is better than it’s ever been. I’m writing more than I ever have.”

The current tour she is on right now is a part of an eight-week leg she and her band are doing. After this one, she and her band return to their home base of Los Angeles.

They will have a short rest there before launching their European tour.

Touring can be exhausting on any musician. Williams is no different, but she said that the people that she is with make it all worth it. Some of the people she tours with have been with her for

According to the Ole Miss website, UM is among a distinguished group of 115 institutions including Harvard, MIT and Johns Hopkins in the “highest research,” or R-1 category. After graduation, Berger will be living out of three suitcases for a year. She was chosen to be an educational leadership mentor for her sorority.

“I won’t really have a home. I’ll be traveling across the country helping chapters with recruitment, or whatever they need,” she said.

Williams is currently promoting her latest record “Ghosts of Highway 20.” The title is a reference to Interstate Highway 20 that runs through the state of Mississippi. It touches both Vicksburg and Jackson, two places she has a long history with.

ruary, and is the compilation several years of work, of both new tracks and some that she has been sitting on for years. It has been well received by critics. She said that she is really proud of how it turned out.

Williams said that she continues to feel at the top of her game on this tour. She said that she really feels like she has grown as a performer and that her stage presence and ability to interact with the crowd is better than ever. After her year of travel, she plans on completing a master’s degree in Sports Administration.

“I’ll miss the community and family that Ole Miss is,” Berger said. “It will be really hard not to see those people anymore.”

When asked what advice she would give to incoming freshmen, she said, “Never give up, even when you’re being told no. Be tenacious enough to try, try again.”

“This day is definitely bittersweet, but I’ll always be a part of the class of 2016,” Berger added. “I will work with the Alumni Association to plan future events for our class. My job will never really be done.

OHS receives LEED Silver award for eco-friendly building

This Earth Day, a small ceremony was held on the steps of Oxford High School where officials of the Oxford School District were presented with the LEED Silver award.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a highly coveted recognition that is given out to select school buildings around the country.

Oxford High School’s new building was evaluated by a ratings system established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute.

Oxford High School is a 220,000-squarefoot building and the first in the state to receive a LEED certification on the Silver level. The award recognizes the high school’s use of energy, water, lighting, material and a variety of other sustainable, earth-friendly practices, like gardening.

“The LEED certification demonstrates our school district’s dedication to providing the healthiest and most sustainable learning environment for its students,” said Oxford School District Superintendent Brian Harvey said in a statement. “We want to reduce our environmental impact while providing real-world sustainability education that prepares our students to succeed in the 21st century. We want our students to learn to live, work and play with sustainability and health in mind— not as an afterthought—but as an integral part of everything they undertake in their life from cradle to career.”

The school prides itself on a 40 percent reduction of water usage and a 34 percent reduction in energy consumption when compared to another building of similar size and structure. During construction, waste left over from the project was diverted from a landfill by being recycled or delivered to a salvage center. The ecofriendly building materials helped to improve indoor air quality in the school. The building has access to public transporta-

Summit to End Homelessness scheduled for Thursday 3 p.m. and will feature guest speakers and panel discussion to get the public thinking. The keynote speaker for the summit will be Associate Pastor of Out Reach Ministries at Idlewild Presbyterian Church in Memphis Rev. Margaret Burnett. She will be there to discuss her work with the homeless population in Midtown Memphis and the role of relationships in the coordination of services and program development.

The Doors of Hope Transition Ministries is partnering with the United Way and the McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement to gather together community members at the 2016 LOU Summit to End Homelessness.

The summit is being held at St. Andrews Methodist Church Thursday, with the primary goal of beginning a community discussion about the commonly overlooked problem of homelessness in the local community. The event is scheduled to last from 10 a.m. to

“It’s all about keeping people safe, teaching them how to be good tenants and learning skills that they can use when they’re back completely on their own,” Williams-Jenkins said. “It’s always a struggle when you’re low income, even if you manage your money well. You just don’t have a lot of extra. Things happen.”

Williams-Jenkins first became involved in this cause six years ago, she attended a summit similar to the one she is organizing right

on their friend’s couch and moving around to stay with different family members, but there are also instances where a family of four is sleeping in a car.

The program that Doors of Hope provides people in these situations with a temporary place to stay, if they are willing to work.

People that go through the program are in it for about four months. They learn personal finance skills, how to manage their debts, how to plan meals and buy groceries on a budget. The goal is to make sure these people leave the program with better money management and life skills than when they entered it.

Lesson to be learned from Tunsil’s experience

T

his year’s NFL Draft was supposed to be historic for Ole Miss football.

It was, but not in the way anyone could have predicted. Three Rebels were taken in the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday night. That was the good news, or the lone bright spot in an evening that had much more negative or bizarre attached to the proceedings than not.

Laremy Tunsil’s fall in the draft was only part of the story. It turned out to be one facet of a night that produced headlines across the nation. As we all settled in to figure out what team he would be playing for in the future, Tunsil’s Twitter account displayed a video of him wearing a gas mask.

With a bong attached to the end. Could this be real? That was the reaction immediately.

As everything unfolded in real time, it became clear that Tunsil was involved in something far more than just waiting behind stage to hear his named called.

A “hacked” account is one thing. A video of him smoking pot is another. The question of who could have done this to Tunsil became why did Tunsil do it? Why did he let someone video him in the second place?

Teams that were expected to draft him didn’t, and the video became the talk of the draft. It was played more than his highlight reel. Being the focus of the draft is usually a great thing, a very big positive for a school.

That wasn’t the case for Ole Miss, or Tunsil and his family.

Eventually the Miami Dolphins decided to take Tunsil. The organization said later it was aware of the video that was made two years prior. Whether that’s true or not, it was clear the Dolphins really liked Tunsil and at pick No. 13, he was a steal from a talent standpoint.

It appeared that things had finally settled down for Tunsil, that his rocky start to a night would finish better. Well, that positive feel lasted about 20 minutes. Not long after he put on an aqua blue Miami hat and took a picture with NFL Commissioner Roger TURN TO TUNSIL PAGE 13

Woodman’s right arm came up big for the Rebels in the opener as he delivered two run-saving assists from his spot in center field. His biggest of the two came in the top of the eighth inning when caught Brennan Breaux at the plate. The Rebels kept their lead, and their momentum in the 7-6 win.

“It was exciting. Coach (Marc) MacMillan is big on coming to get the ball, especially on that last one, I came and got it and I got a good throw on it and Henri (Lartigue) made a good tag on it,” Woodman said. “Those were good plays for sure. They’re pretty fast as a team, and they send guys like that and you just have to put a good throw on it when you can.”

Woodman’s fantastic throw was just one of the memorable plays for him in the win. He also had two doubles and drove in two runs at the plate.

“It was definitely big. Sometimes we struggle swinging the bat consistently, so it’s good to have another good start to the weekend,” Woodman said.

Outside of strong defense, the Rebels needed Wyatt Short to close the door on the Tigers. Short played his role perfectly as he only allowed one hit in his 2.0 innings of work to earn his seventh save.

LSU's Tigers have to be glad their done playing against J.B. Woodman. And a team from the state of Mississippi. Paced by two home runs from Woodman, the No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels defeated LSU 8-2 Saturday at Oxford-University Stadium.

It was the second straight SEC series win for the Rebels, and second straight series loss for the No. 11 Tigers, who fell to Mississippi State last weekend.

Woodman finished with four RBIs in the victory, and three home runs overall in the series. Colby Bortles also hit a home run Saturday for the Rebels, who raced out to an 8-0 lead. Freshman Andy Pagnozzi earned the win for Ole Miss on the mound to improve to 7-2. John Valek III took the loss for LSU, which won Friday night 6-3. Ole Miss won Game 1 of the series 7-6.

FRIDAY Just when Alex Lange, LSU’s sophomore pitcher, needed a little extra mojo, he got it from the Rebels. His second straight complete game was the difference in a series win for the Rebels, and a series tied heading into Game 3 for the Tigers. Lange made a few mistakes early on, like giving up a two-run home run to Woodman in the first inning, or an RBIsingle to Will Golsan in the fourth inning.

“The dugout was very lively. That’s how the game goes and they came walking out of their dugout and our guys came out,” Lange said. “For me, I had to shut them out. I had to keep the pitches down, get some early outs and get my team back in here while we are all fired up and ready to hit.”

Ole Miss was retired in the bottom of the fifth after Lange gave up just one hit.

Then LSU came back to the plate, and tacked on two more insurance runs to really secure things.

Fantastic four Oxford tennis heavily relies on junior girls

A selfless approach to tennis, and a true dedication to the other members of the Oxford High tennis team, are just two one of the many reasons Louis Nash likes his Fantastic Four.

Amanda Lowery, Anne Hardy, Olivia Williams and Claire Stevens are the backbone of the OHS tennis operation. The four juniors are always on time, always ready to practice, and always ready to assist Nash, and others, in the attempt to win a ninth straight state title.

All four Chargers play well off each other. Lowery is clearly the most outgoing and the one who has no problem saying what is on her mind. Hardy, Stevens and Williams always seem to have a smile on their face. The four called themselves cheerleaders even if Nash thought they were much more than that. Nash’s affection for them revolves around how coachable they all are.

“To have four girls in one class, and they started in the seventh grade together, and they’ve come all the way through the 11th grade together, you can count the number of times they have been late,” Nash said. “You can count the number of times they have had a conflict with practice... you can’t even count them because they are always here. They always do what you ask them to do. A lot of the time, they already know what you want them to do and they’re ready to get it done.”

The role for the four has evolved this spring in order to get ready for the 2017 season. Nash is counting on them to take over major roles their senior year.

“All of them have had to play and the summer will be important for them to even step up another notch, tennis wise,” Nash said. “They will assume a leadership role next year regardless.

They’re natural at it. When they move up to be seniors, they will already have that role taken care of. They’re natural people to do that. When you lead, you’re also expected to play and they will be expected to also play. They will be expected to play a lot and also expected to play well. And expected to win. In order for us to be successful, they will have to win matches.”

Nash has seen growth on the court from his four to go along with them being “really good girls and awesome kids.”

Swayze (Elliott) was also a part of that group. She is still really good friends with the other four even though she’s not playing anymore.”

When Nash wants to make an example for the other members of the team, he points to either Williams, Lowery, Hardy and Stevens to make his point.

“You take all four of them, and they’re just as comfortable talking to grown ups as they are kids their own age, or, kids that are smaller,” Nash said. “They’ve all taught little kid tennis, they’ve all taught big-kid tennis. They can relate to all of it. They’re really mature for anybody’s age. Their folks raising them have done just an incredible job. You don’t get one in a class like that much less four.”

Lowery is close to Stevens, Hardy and Williams and has been for years because as she said it in her joking nature “they’re clean and nice.”

“They bathe regularly. It’s important for a tennis team, and friendship,” Lowery said as the

others laughed. “If they’re not going to be clean, I’m not going to be near them.”

Hardy said the four are “super close” and that she had played tennis with Stevens since she was age 4.

Stevens felt like everyone pushed each other to be better players.

“We hit all the time together.

We really aren’t apart from each other and we never really get irritated with each other,” Stevens said. “Anne and I do have a special relationship since we have been together since we were little, but all of us have played together. It wouldn’t be the same without us four.”

Williams said the other three were really important to her, and the four had created a unique dynamic.

“We’ve created a good friendship through all these years and I can always count on them,” said Williams, who started playing tennis when she was age 7 or 8.

Williams first learned the game in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. “Ever since then, I’ve just stuck with it.”

Lowery started tennis in elementary school but not at an early age. Her father, Buddy, played tennis, while her mother

attempted to play, she said, for exercise.

Hardy and Stevens both grew up taking lessons from Oxford Park Commission instructor Debbie Swindoll. The tournaments, and tougher matches, started for those two around age 9. All four rotate playing girls doubles for the Chargers.

“I would say that the tennis team is our spring and we’re very invested in it. I would say it’s a good backbone to have and we’ve had it for so long, I don’t know what we would do without it,” Hardy said.

“Our friendships have made that a lot easier because if we weren’t friends, it could turn into being competitive,” Stevens added about the rotation and how the relationships keeps that flowing well. “I think we handle it well, especially Olivia and I. We do a good job of being supporters. Cheerleaders, we make sure we fill that role, too.”

Williams said that the tennis team was an important part of her life, and without it, there would be a hole in heart.

“I look forward to coming everyday and being with these girls and everyone else,” she said.

Lowery also likes showing up

for practice, and hitting balls with her teammates. Lowery added that the running wasn’t too bad either. Lowery didn’t consider herself the joker of the team, for the record.

“I’m the girl that’s on the bus and I eat the chips and I listen to my music,” Lowery said who loves music from the 1970s the most and would play Led Zeppelin 2 if she had one more album to listen to.

As for any pressure the four may feel, it’s not there, or not been an issue.

“For a team that is always expected to win, there isn’t as much as you would think. Whenever we’ve gone and played, we’ve done it so many times, it’s not that we have to win, it’s more expected,” Lowery said.

“Right now, we don’t feel a lot of pressure because we are rotating out for No. 2 doubles but next year, we are losing a lot of seniors and we are going to be the backbone of at least the girls’ team,” Hardy said. “I think next year the pressure will start to heat up, but right now, we’re just kind of enjoying it.” john.davis@journalinc.com Twitter: @oxfordcitizenjd

cluded, at least in the short run, is how powerful social media really is. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other similar type sites can be used to generate information in a fantastic, positive manner. We already knew that. At the same time, the bad things that Hugh Freeze and others have warned about along the way came up in a damaging, hurtful way. Tunsil was damaged by his actions. It was very, very unfortunate that he was hacked. It was malicious for sure. His mistake was compounded beyond imagination.

Lesson learned, hopefully, for Tunsil and for athletes who heavily use social media.

Don’t do things you don’t want to get out to the public. And if you do the things we all saw, make sure nobody makes a video, or picture of it.

Nothing is private anymore. Not when it comes to the use of a smart phone, laptop or tablet.

Goddell, the questions about his social media accounts came up. Of course by then, the texts of an alleged conversation with Ole Miss football staffers had emerged. They included Tunsil asking for money, for his mother, to pay the electric bill. There was no doubt that Tunsil was hacked, again, but were the messages for real?

Even if they were placed together by someone else, there were questions to be answered.

Tunsil answered and the responses gave Ole Miss a lot more to deal with. What had been a bizarre start to the night got even crazier.

Do I think Tunsil was confused on what he was answering? Sure, I can buy that. He was peppered with questions, about some things that were not easy to deal with. Tunsil seemed like he was being honest, trying to do his best to admit a mistake that won’t happen again.

But did he mean the gas mask or asking for money?

Tunsil didn’t do something that others haven’t.

He isn’t the first one to be hacked. The difference between Tunsil and the rest of us resides in his athleticism. He’s famous for having a specific talent. And he’s even more known now for a mistake 98 percent of the rest of us could get away without too many people knowing about. It’s a shame, but it still can’t be forgotten. Tunsil can move past this. He can be forgiven. It still doesn’t change what happened, and that’s the lesson to learn. Being vigilant and choosing to do things wisely is the only way to avoid this moving forward.

Hopefully the next star high school football player with the dream of being taken in the first round in three or four years can at least use what happened to Tunsil in a positive way.

Hopefully no one else has to deal with this. But they will if they don’t do things in a smarter manner. That much is for sure.

Stepping up Sallis comes through for Lafayette tennis

Two months ago, right when the high school tennis season was about to start, Lafayette’s Cara Anne Sallis was headed to the hospital. She was dealing with ulcerative colitis, which essentially means here intestines had become inflamed and she couldn’t digest food properly.

“It was about three weeks before I went into the hospital that I had been dealing with it,” Sallis said Thursday, just three days after helping lead the Commodores past Pontotoc in the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs. “I was in the hospital the day we had our first match.”

About two weeks before the playoffs started, Callis returned to the team she holds dear to heart.

At that point, she wasn’t in shape, and had lost 40 pounds, with a good percentage of that being muscle mass.

“I was basically starting from nothing when I got back out here and started practicing again,” she said.

Lafayette coach Debbie Swindoll wanted to have Sallis play in one match before the year concluded. The first attempt, against South Panola, was ruined by the rain. When the Commodores got into the playoffs, Swindoll didn’t think the opportunity would come up again. Until Monday, when Alley Bowen got ill just before meeting up with the Warriors. Sallis, who had been practicing with the team, grabbed her uniform

and hit the court, playing mixed doubles with Barrett Childress.

“She just came up to me and said she needed me to play. I did it for the team, because this team has worked so hard,” Sallis said.

“Our seniors have worked so hard.

Coach Debbie deserves it, everyone deserves to be in the position we are now. I was expecting to watch everyone else and cheer them on. I wasn’t thinking I would actually get to play in in a playoff match.”

Swindoll said the question she had to answer was if Bowen went out on the court, and got sick again, the match would go to Pontotoc via forfeit.

“I said do we take a chance of the match not finishing or putting in Cara Anne, who is a good player, in and us finish the match. I wanted to finish no matter what,” Swindoll said.

Sallis didn’t just play for the Commodores, she did an outstanding job. Her effort was key in the 4-3 overall win that advance the team on to meet New Albany in the 4A north state title match.

“I was very happy with the way I played. Honestly,” she said. “Everybody was just so proud of me. I told Coach Debbie when I was in the hospital that my goal was, after I got out, was to come out and at least play one match and get a win.

I never expected playoffs against Pontotoc. After the match, I looked over to the sidelines where everyone was standing and I just saw tears pouring from everybody. It was an amazing feeling to see how

“She performed far better than what I expected,” Swindoll added.

“With her being out, and the magnitude of that match, she was

equal to Barrett, and he had been playing all year as far as performance level. She got back just in time and I have to hand it to her for being the ultimate team player.

She practiced with us the whole time, and it gave her just about the

right amount of time to be able to help us.”

Cary Sallis was one of the parents on the sidelines after he got a call from his daughter moments before she hit the court.

“I was at work and she called me and said she was getting to play and I said that I would be right there,” said Sallis, who is the chief of the Oxford Fire Department. “I called her mom and we met over there to watch. Watching her play sports through the years, and knowing what she been through, she had set a goal to get back and play this season. It didn’t look like it was going to happen, but to see her get that opportunity and see her come through like that, it just made us so happy.”

Cara Anne Sallis, who has been playing tennis since the age of 8, was hoping that the match with New Albany, win or lose, would be another building block towards even better things in 2017.

“This is the farthest we’ve been with this group of people and it’s amazing, even if we don’t get past New Albany. I think everyone should still be very proud,” she said. “I think next year we will have a shot of going to state. We have all the girls back.”

When Sallis isn’t playing tennis, she is doing volleyball, with Lafayette, and on a travel basis.

Chargers use power, Mustang mistakes to take 1-0 series lead

Oxford coach Chris Baughman was tired of seeing his players hit fly balls and find an opponent’s mitt for much of the season.

Thursday night, many of the fly balls the Chargers hit didn’t stay inside Edwin Moak Field where the Center Hill Mustang fielders could get to them.

The Chargers used their power at the right time, hitting three home runs en route to an 11-2 victory over Center Hill in Game 1 of the second round of the MHSAA 5A playoffs.

The Chargers got home runs from Drew Bianco, Thomas Dillard, and Grae

Kessinger. Kessinger’s tworun blast came right after Duncan Graeber tied the game with a two-run double in the second inning to give the Chargers a 4-2 lead.

Bianco’s blast came right after Kessinger’s to give Oxford (21-7) a 5-2 lead.

“This week in practice, we just kept believing in ourselves,” Kessinger said.

“We knew the hits were going to come. We just stayed focused, worked hard. Came out tonight and put up some runs. Jason Barber after the first inning was lights out. We gave him some run support and just took it from there.”

Center Hill (17-11) scored first in the top of the first inning with a two-run

homer from CJ Dunn. The early momentum was squashed in the Oxford second when Mustang shortstop Parker Haberstroh threw the ball away on a grounder from Sage Mullins that would have ended the inning. Instead, it sparked the big inning that allowed to give Oxford the lead for good.

“There’s no doubt that started it. Tag (Gatlin) drew a walk and then Duncan had the big double,” Kessinger said. “One thing we are working on is don’t be satisfied. Just put the pressure on them and it turned out good for us tonight.”

Oxford got three runs in the fourth inning thanks in

large part to an error by Mustang left fielder Blake Loper who couldn’t handle a fly ball that would’ve ended the inning instead allowed two Charger runners to score. Oxford scored another three runs in the fifth inning on Dillard’s three-run homer to round out the scoring after another Center Hill error in that inning allowed Dillard his opportunity.

Baughman believes a special round of ‘no fly-ball’ batting practice they had before the game helped how Oxford approached the plate.

“Getting the ball out of the air,” Baughman said of what his team did in practice during the off week.

“They didn’t like it, but we had a round where as long as they hit hard line drives and hard ground balls, they could stay in there. Some of them stayed in there for eight, nine, ten, 12 cuts.

Some of them had one cut, hit a pop-up and they’re out. They didn’t like it, but I really think it bled over into tonight.

“I’m okay up 11-2 in the fifth or sixth inning making a big swing to send us home,” Baughman continued. “I told Jason and Drew both, I said ‘End it, let’s go to the house.’ You have to pick your times. I thought we had some real good at-bats.

I’m real proud of the guys, real proud of the way they responded. I don’t know if

us making that a focus in practice had anything to do with it or not, but I was very proud of the way we swung it.”

EXTRA BASES Oxford struck out just once in the game, its lowest since not striking out at all in Game 2 against Center Hill last year in the playoffs.
