Allgood helps keep annual Double Decker moving

Jimmy Allgood likes to see people have fun. He also likes to see them stay safe at the same time. Oxford’s Director of of Emergency Management has been working closely with the Double Decker Arts Festival since 2001.

His role has expanded over the years,

just as his department has, but his goal has never changed and that is for thousands and thousands of people looking to have a good time stay protected.

“We started out by moving our mobile command post for emergency services just for normal Double Decker operations.

It also gives us a command post just in case something does happen,” Allgood said. “We have a place to meet, sit down

and work out of. A few years ago with the Boston bombings, we got the state Homeland Security team in and we bring in dogs and do a search for both the Square and at the run.”

One of the biggest keys in law enforcement is dealing with people, Carothers said. He added that you have to be able to approach people.

Carothers is currently working days with the department. Every three months, he trades off and works at night. The sleep pattern was something to get used to, but Carothers has that mastered now.

“You’re a lot busier on days than you are at nights,” he said. “Most of the calls I go out on are family disputes, domestics. I’ve been lucky enough to be on a few that aren’t so dangerous, just a lot of arguing and hasn’t

gotten so physical.”

Just a few weeks back, Carothers went to a call involving a man naked in the street in Thacker Heights.

“We rolled up on him and we had to catch him, naked,” Carothers said.

“We ended up taking him to the hospital.”

Carothers has yet to have that one interesting stop or arrest, and the routine is just fine with him. Sheriff deputies don’t have a certain beat like officers do in the city. For a Lafayette County native, there is no better way to give back to the community than through the sheriff’s office. Rowland Carothers has been in law enforcement since 2014. The former LHS football player started off working in the Lafayette County Detention Center and now he’s on patrol, serving residents.

Carothers worked for the University Police Department after leaving the jail. He went to the academy and he began his career with the sheriff’s department in February, 2015.

“It’s been good. I like it a lot,” Carothers said. “I always thought about becoming a law enforcement officer. It was something that was in the back of my head for a while. I feel like I’m a helping type person and I can talk to people in a way to where I can get my

Simeone said all he could was thank everyone for coming out to the show. He never imagined he’d be playing packed out shows in Australia where the audience was singing his songs back to him.

He grew up in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio before

moving to Athens, Georgia on what he described as a whim. Simeone is a long time fan of R.E.M., who originated in Athens. He drove through it, loved it and stayed for a year.

Later, Simeone read an article that referred to Austin as a bigger Athens with a thriving music

scene. He went there to stay with a friend and ended up moving to the city in the late 90s. He spent his time perfecting his craft, playing whatever gigs he could swing.

“I was writing songs and doing stuff when I was still in Cleveland, but I was still a bit of a bedroom

dweller,” he said. “I needed to be in a city where it was a little easier to find musicians and get me out of my bedroom, ya know? It’s like there’s a club or a band or a musician within 20 feet of you at all times here.”

The Bellfuries have moved around a bit in terms of membership.

They have also taken a few breaks to work day jobs and there was a stretch of time when Simeone went back to school.

They’re back now. The current group of four guys that make up the Bellfuries have been playing together for about two or three years now, Simeone said. Leading up to Double Decker, the band is playing several shows in Austin. After Oxford in April, they hit California in June and then the Netherlands in July.

When Carothers first graduated from Lafayette in 2003, he attended Northwest Mississippi Community College and he worked for a mobile car wash. He then went to work for Enterprise car rental for seven years. He still works at Enterprise on a part-time basis, which means Carothers is always busy.

“Sometimes I work 12

days in a two-week period between Enterprise and sheriff’s department,” Carothers said. “I’ve always been a hard worker.

Working at Enterprise, you’re dealing with the public everyday. There are people that rent cars that recognize me. All the time.”

He played football under coach Scott Samsel and Carothers said that working in the department is just like being on a team.

“Discipline. You have to be disciplined out there in law enforcement. Period,” he said. “It’s like a team in that you stick by each other and watch each other’s back. It’s just like covering your quarterback’s blind side in football. It’s the same way with your fellow officers.

And in the same with football, you have to be disciplined.”

Working in the jail helped Carothers in that he knew the people better

before he got on the streets.

“Growing up in Oxford, I know a lot of the people here so it was easier for me to adapt,” he said.

“They respect what I do and they know I’m doing my job.”

Respect is also a big thing in law enforcement, and Carothers felt the majority of residents respect how tough the job can be.

Last week the Bellfuries were touring in Australia.

The tour was punctuated by long flights and rowdy shows. They had a blast and got back to their home base of Austin exhausted. Lead singer and founder of the band Joey Simeone said the he though he knew Australia was big, they under estimated it.

“I just figured it’d be like any other tour that we do,” he said. “We fly over, somebody has a van and we just go to our cities.

That would have been impossible. The drives would have been, like, 15-hour drives. But we got through it and the crowds were pretty good, everyone was enthusiastic and they were all super thankful. Everyone kept saying ‘thank you for playing, thank you for

from the 50s landed on a tropical island populated by instrumentalists who had played in country bands and The Bellfuries was the result.

Many of the songs on the album “Workingman’s Bellfuries” are crafted in a way that allow Simeone’s voice to tow much of the melody, with the instruments providing a melodic rhythms that drive the vocals to where they need to be. Simeone’s unique voice and unpredictable vocal range working with electric guitar give the band its rockabilly vibe. It is the combination of rim knocks keeping time and slide guitar laying out grooves that bring the tropical aspect to the music. The overall effect leaves the listener with the feeling of standing in a small, crowded bar in Austin, where everyone is clapping with the beat of the music and waiting on their next round whiskey.

Bike for Badges charity bike race set for May 7

On May 7, Whirlpool Trials is hosting the inaugural Bike For Badges charity benefit race at 8 a.m.

Officer Blake Horton of the Oxford Police Department, with the help of his fellow officer Barron Pruitt, organized the event. There is a $20 registration fee before the race. That goes up to $25 on the day of the race. All of the money raised by those entry fees goes to benefit the Lafayette County Law Enforcement Officers Association and the Oxford Peace Officers Association.

The purpose of these organizations is to provide financial assistance to local law enforcement if necessary. For example, if an officer’s house burns down, the associations will be able to provide that officer with some sort of financial assistance that keeps his or her family off the streets until everything is figured out.

The Lafayette County Law Enforcement Officers Association covers the Oxford Police Department, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and the University Police Department. The Oxford Peace Officers Association covers just the OPD. Horton has been riding bikes his whole life. He grew up in Jackson riding trails wherever he could find them. After getting out of the army in 2009, he attended Ole Miss and earned a degree in criminal justice.

He was promoted to a patrol officer last year, but has been with Oxford Police Department for several years, working as a full-time dispatcher and reserve officer before that.

Horton said the idea for the benefit race struck him one day toward the end of January.

“I was sitting on my couch one morning, drinking coffee and I just thought, ‘I’m going to do a mountain bike race,’” he said. “I prayed about it for about 20 minutes and started calling people. A month later, I had a flier, the university finally sent me a finalized waiver and I had a waiver of my own that I had

to finagle and then we had ourselves a mountain bike race.”

Whirlpool Trails is hosting the race. It will be on a five-mile track that traces through the woods that have been roped off for the event.

order to make room for the vendors. Three dog teams are used to search the Square before everyone gets set up, and before any runner even starts the race.

Allgood also coordinates the medical response aspect of the festival. There is an ambulance from the hospital as well as a paramedic team close by.

“Some years it can be 99 degrees and other years it’s 35 degrees. April is always that strange time of year so I make sure that we’re covered from that direction,” Allgood said.

If you ever want to find Allgood during the festival, the best bet is to visit the parking lot east of the Square, or as he calls it, the Something Southern parking lot. He regulates spaces in that lot for sponsors and city employees. Allgood is usually right in front of the barrier that would normally lead cars on to the Square.

“I help get the Double Decker buses through for the rides and make sure traffic flows because that is an older part of the city

around 14th and 13th street,” Allgood said. “If they start getting blocked up and we do have an emergency call back in there that’s not connected with Double Decker, it could affect that neighborhood. Again, we want everyone to be safe.

That’s my ultimate goal, to make it a safe event. If we need to get a fire truck or ambulance in there, we can get one in there. We also want everyone to be flowing right and having a good time, too.”

No matter how many of the festivals he has taken part in, there is something different every year, Allgood said.

“Last year, we had a sewage main stop up. So we had to shut the Hotty Toddy potties down and when you’ve got 35, 40, 50,000 people on the Square, and when that’s your main bathroom, that’s tough,” Allgood said. “We got public works in there and they found out what the problem was. It took about an hour, hour and a half. This is a big group effort. There isn’t just one person involved. In a lot of ways, I’m the contact person. We have the police de-

partment, the fire department, emergency management and all the Double Decker staff.”

Mary Allyn Hedges of Visit Oxford depends greatly on Allgood during the festival, and in the days leading up to the event. Allgood added that Hedges, or any member of the staff, knows they can call on him to help try and solve a problem. In other words, he is the ultimate Swiss Army knife.

“Double Decker brings so many unique aspects to it.

And I look at it this way, if it’s helping the festival, from working with the production company that sets the stages up, since we supply emergency generators, to ADA, handicap parking, that’s just fine,” Allgood said.

“The pd takes care of the towing, we just make sure that we’re towing the right vehicles. We have in the past had some of our volunteers show up and park where they weren’t supposed to park and they were inadvertently towed. Then I go and talk to the towing company and tell them that is one of our volunteers and just kind of smooth things over so it doesn’t cost them anything to get their vehicle back.

Whatever they need to have the Double Decker run right. That’s the goal. It turns into a long day, but it’s fun.”

before the annual event, he gives the staff at Visit Oxford a daily report.

“Some years, it’s nice, calm, quiet and we’re not going to have anything but then like in 2010, when we had the outbreak of tornadoes, that’s when the festival got split and moved to Sunday,” Allgood said. “We keep a close eye on it and especially if it’s one of those iffy days, a 50 percent chance of something developing, I monitor it real heavy and talk with the service a lot. I communicate that to them through the day and then at 7 o’clock that night, we always have a quickie joint meeting showing what the weather looks like and here is what the clean up process is looking like. The vendors shut down at 5:30 and have to be off the Square by 7. It gives us a good timeline of where we are at and what is being done and what isn’t being done and where we are weather wise.”

A couple of years ago, right after the normal meeting, the staff was able to inform the last band playing that by 8, they would be sitting in the middle of a lightning and rain storm.

“We knew that we were

going to have to shut things down about an hour early that night and it worked out fine,” Allgood said. “We just try to keep everyone informed and on the same page. If we can do that, then things tend to run a lot smoother. I really appreciate Mary Allyn and them because they let me do what I need to do. It helps me a lot. And they listen.

“If I tell them that by 8 p.m., there is going to be a thunderstorm, we need to have the stages cleared and let the people know and get them out, they make sure that information is passed along,” he added. “They make sure that the production company isn’t raising cane. It’s 100 percent about safety and we do not want the city of Oxford to have a black eye from something bad happening at the festival. You can’t stop everything but we want to make it as safe as possible. The Nightowls slotted to perform at Double Decker

The Nightowls will be closing Friday night of the Double Decker Arts Festival at the end of April, performing right after a live broadcast of Thacker Mountain Radio. This Austin-born, 10 piece soul band has its roots in the Austin music scene, combining the best of Motown, Memphis and the uniqueness of Texas to form their unmistakable sound.

The Nightowls did not just appear one day; the process of bringing together everyone that is currently in the band took about two years. The band as it is now has been playing together for just over two years.

Ryan Harkrider is the architect behind the group. He is the front man, lead vocalist, bandleader,

t-shirt folder and the guy that helps make sure everyone makes it to the RV on time. A band consisting of 10 instrumentalists may seem like a lot but Harkrider describes them all as a big, charismatic, and surprisingly functional family.

Everyone has something to contribute.

“I had been the principal song writer for the band, and I continue to be that, but we really stumbled on ‘the band’ about two years ago,” he said. “The last couple records we’ve put out have been very much a collaborative effort, which is a beautiful thing. There are so many talented people in this band.”

Harkrider was born and raised in Austin. He attended the University of Texas, earning a degree in music. During that time, he worked as a singer/songwriter

and sang in local bands. When he graduated, he did not stop performing.

He comes from a musical family. Harkrider’s grandfather was a trumpet player, composer and director of big bands; he even directed the University of North Texas’s famous One O’clock Lab Band, which has received seven Grammy nominations over the years. Harkrider’s mother, father and aunt directed choirs. He and his sister sang in church throughout their childhood.

Double Decker will not be the band’s first time in Oxford. They released a record in September and toured last fall. One of their stops on the tour was Thacker Mountain Radio.

“We had a blast,” Harkrider said of the band’s time in Oxford.

“Not only that, but we loved being in Oxford. Beautiful city.

Everyone there was extremely kind and very, very loving to us while we were in town. We wanted to come back. Our agency here in Austin set it all up.”

A lot of the songs on their “Good As Gold” album, “Nice To Know You” in particular, come across as easy listening music with an attitude and a soul. The listener is not working to enjoy the music as much as it washes over everyone who comes near it. It’s that classic, big band feel that is so hard to find in modern ensembles that makes The Nightowls stand out from the rest.

The song “Can’t Shake This Feeling” on that same record opens up with a smooth and steady bass riff backed by keyboard and drums. Soon, trumpets come in and age the sound

by decades, throwing the song back to the time of black and white films starring private i’s that work in buildings of exposed brick facades. There’s a pause. The music returns with Harkrider’s crooning vocal accompaniment. Pretty soon the keyboard starts to warble several octaves higher and female vocals rise from the back. Vocals and keyboard work together on this track in a way that clearly shows Harkrider’s history of singing in church. The entire song feels like listening to a sermon being lead by a charismatic detective that walked out of a noir film.

The ultimate staycation Jim Dees

xford emptied out for spring break this week leaving the town to those of us who merely work and live here. The weather has been Destin-breezy so locals are forgiven if they’ve taken advantage of the 80-degree temps to strip down to Speedos and hit their own patios for what is known as a “staycation.”

(Guilty).

Yes, I have been the Daddio of my Patio this week and am now sporting a sunburn that will have acquaintances asking, “Where’d you get the tan?” To which I will reply, “My refrigerator light.” Sure, my backyard is no match for a sugary beach with crystal blue surf, but when that fact bums me out, I count the money I’m saving every time I mix a drink, make a sandwich or sleep in my own bed. Staycation pays, baby, and you never have to wait in line.

Plus, there’s room service: I go into a room and serve myself.

How many times have you gone on vacation and returned exhausted saying, “I need a vacation from my vacation?” That doesn’t happen with the staycation. On staycation there’s no pressure to “hit the hot spots” or “get out and see the sights.” The hot spot is the patio which contains a stuffed chair, full ice chest, computer for music, an umbrella and the barbeque grill for animal sacraments at twilight. For sights, there’s the squirrel who’s taken up residence nearby. He’s been surfing the many mud puddles and loudly giving off the squirrel hiss which I assume is a sign of contentment. Life is a nest of nuts here in Stayca.

Part of lounging on an imaginary beach is reading and this week I came across an article in Wired (from 2008, new again thanks to the Internet) about a company in England, And Vinyly.

The company, born from the techno record label, Subhead, offers a service that will bake the cremated ashes of a loved one into the vinyl of a record to be listened to by survivors. “We’re offering people the chance to press their ashes in a vinyl recording of their own voice, their favorite tunes or their last will and testa-

Jason Leach, founder of And Vinyly, explained the process to Wired: “Basically the ashes must be sprinkled onto the raw piece of vinyl (known as a “biscuit” or “puck”) before it is pressed by the plates. This means that when the plates exert their pressure on the vinyl to create the grooves, the ashes are pressed into the record.” He also noted that some customers may opt for no sound at all so their heirs can “simply

press the ashes into the vinyl to result in pops and crackles.”

Yeah, the loved ones would keep that one in heavy rotation.

It’s one thing to record your own mix tape to leave behind upon one’s death, but to have your very bones ground into the grooves of a record so your survivors are, in effect, playing YOU when they play it? That’s really putting yourself into it.

And then there’s the cover art: “And Vinyly also offers personal-

ized RIV (Rest In Vinyl) artwork - the simple version just carries your name and your life span, or you can have your portrait painted by artist James Hague, using your ashes mixed into the paint.” The price for the total package, including a 24-minute recording and cover art, at least in 2008, was around $2,000.

I began to ponder what songs I’d put on my final mix tape. At 24 minutes, there’s only time for three or four songs, unless I included the Dead (no pun) tuning up. I decided that, in recognition of spring and the noble art of staycation, such a record should consist of cheery, sunny, songs of the season: Beach Boys, or Temptations, or the “Name Game,” a frothy song silly with life. Or Professor Longhair singing about “Red Beans and Rice.”

It then occurred to me that death is the ultimate staycation.

You are where you’re going to be – for a while. After the first day, there’s no travel. Death puts the “stay” in staycation. Yikes.

Enough. We’ll worry about final vinyl later. Staycation is about over. Enjoy yourself and pass the sunscreen.

As for me, I’m ordering more room service.

Vaughn Design celebrating 10 years in Oxford

Jeremy Vaughn is all about the ideas. And the details. For the past 10 years, Vaughn has been designing some of the most recognizable advertising campaigns locally, in the Mid South and even across the nation. Customer service is his top priority, and improving business for his clients has been achieved through a lot of hard work.

Vaughn Design is celebrating the important 10year milestone this month. The University of Mississippi graduate has extensive knowledge in graphic design and art.

He has sales experience working in the newspaper and media industry and the two meshed into what he can offer customers currently.

“I got to know a lot of businesses in town, their goals, as a sales rep. My passion was design so what I would do was work at night, work at home,” Vaughn said. “I would do a design for a company I knew and I would walk into the door and ask if they liked it. If I saw a logo I thought needed a better job, I would walk into their door and hit the streets with it.”

The side job to help pay rent started to grow, and so did the demand for Vaughn’s abilities. The opportunity to go full time came in March, 2006.

“The reason I did jump into it was I did have a passion for design. I also love Oxford. I was a freshman in college in 1998, so I’ve been in this town for quite a while,” he said.

“We do have clients now from around the country.

A lot are in Memphis, but it all goes back to Oxford.

We may know somebody in real estate here but they have business in Memphis and then they know somebody who knows somebody else. It may be somebody that was at Ole Miss and has moved off.

We have a client in the state of Washington who is a graduate of Ole Miss.”

“If we can help a business grow, I love to grow with them,” Vaughn said.

“Since day one, some of our clients have been with us like Chaney’s Pharmacy or Stout’s Carpet. Belles and Beaus. A lot of them have been with us from the beginning. It’s really about trust. They want to

trust that you have their best interest at heart.

These people are in there everyday, after hours, kind of like we are with our business, and they have a passion for what they do.”

Listening to the client is the key, Vaughn said, even if he feels like he knows what they may really need.

“I think once people have learned to trust us, they know we have their best interests and doing whatever it takes to grow their company,” he said.

“With that growth, we’ve been able to grow the people that work here, too.

We’re small in house. Always have been because I like that. I do have other designers that assist me.

Everything starts with me whether it’s an idea or a sketch or even the final product. The cool thing is that everyone who designs for us, even outside of these walls, they’re all products of Ole Miss as well and they know this area. One of them is actu-

ally my wife. She works with us a couple of days out of the week while she does her own thing.”

Starting in April, Vaughn Design will be working out of The Edison, which is a new professional/retail office space located at 1415 University Ave. It will allow Vaughn, and his staff, to spread out.

“We move our offices a lot. I don’t know the reason behind that but the next step for us isn’t probably to grow in house or

the size of the office but I do want us to always be on top of the latest trends,” Vaughn said. “Advertising has changed so much and I think there is a need for all of it to be done in a correct way for all the clients.

In the next 10 years, we will continue to do what we’ve been doing. We’ve been blessed to have growth beyond what I could have imagined. I have taken a special interaction and my clients are people that I have been at my wedding or I’m very close to. It’s just that bond I have. I love Oxford and Ole Miss and it will always be home base even if some of our clients are outside of Oxford.”

Anything a typical ad agency can do, Vaughn Design provides it, but in a little different manner. If a logo needs refreshing, Vaughn can deliver. If a website needs a few tweaks, he can help. Another part that he does is marketing/consulting and strategizing. Just this month, Vaughn is working with 40 different businesses on such things.

“What’s their goal?

Where are they looking to be in one year or 10 years?

We really want to know about their product so that we can educate the consumer on their product,” Vaughn said. “We deal with everyone from restaurants to retail clothing stores, a little bit of everything. It’s a decade of design is what we call it around here. We are blessed and fortunate that the city has embraced us and supported us while we have supported it. We have put our mark on a lot of businesses in this town.

And we want to continue to grow with the city and have everyone reach their goals.

Two local elementary students named Nat Geo State Bee Semifinalists Kevin Park, a sixth grader at Oxford Intermediate School (OIS), is a 2016 National Geographic State Bee semifinalist, according to the National Geographic Society.

After winning the schoollevel competition at OIS–where he competed against fellow students answering questions on geography–he is now eligible to compete in the 2016 Mississippi National Geographic State Bee on Friday, April 1, 2016, at Hinds Community College in Pearl. This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is in its 28th year.

March Madnes not the same without Rebels in it

M

arch Madness takes on a whole different feel this season locally.

This time last year, the Ole Miss Rebels took on BYU in one of the best NCAA “play in” games you ever wanted to see. The Rebels took us all through a range of emotions to capture that victory. Even if the Rebels didn’t make it past the next round, it’s always fun to get a win the Big Dance. And to be a part of it all.

Ole Miss isn’t in Dayton this week. Or any other city for that matter. Andy Kennedy’s bunch isn’t hosting a team in the National Invitational Tournament either. That’s a shame because Stefan Moody, and The Pavilion, just seemed like a good combination to make it to Madison Square Garden. Ole Miss has played well in the NIT under Kennedy over the past decade. Two trips to the Big Apple speak to that point.

Even though Moody is a bonafide All-SEC standout, and a made-for-TV player, the Rebels’ season on the basketball court is over.

It ended abruptly against Alabama in the SEC Tournament despite Moody’s best efforts. Not enough defense did the Rebels in last week.

Defense, a schedule that ranked No. 136 in the nation and lack of quality wins proved to be a difficult road to navigate. Ole Miss finished the season with 20 wins. Of those, half came over teams with an RPI of 150 or worse.

The Rebels’ best win of the year came at home, against Vanderbilt, a team that made it to the play in contest of the NCAAs. Georgia, one of four teams that made the NIT from the SEC, was the next best win for the Rebels. That also came at home — the night of the Pavilion’s grand opening to be exact — and after Georgia led most of the contest. At the time, it seemed like a win the Rebels could feel good about when it came time to compare against another team that was also trying to make the NCAA field as an at-large team.

If the 72-71 win over Georgia was one of six or seven wins like that, it might have been a different story. Ole Miss never got that close.

An RPI of 97 just doesn’t cut it from a committee standpoint. Not unless you have a conference tournament championship to go along with it. The Rebels just didn’t have what it took to get into the discussion. That goes for the NIT as well.

There were a number of fans who hated to hear that Moody wasn’t able to play another game, or two. Or three. He would have looked great shooting in the Garden. Still, this team didn’t seem poised for a major run even if they TURN TO REBELS PAGE 17

Improvement as the year went on defined both the Oxford Chargers and Lafayette Commodores on the basketball court. The Chargers garnered 20 wins for coach Drew Tyler despite finishing fourth during the regular season in Division 2-5A play. When it came time for OHS to host the tournament, the Chargers couldn’t be beat.

A win over Canton in the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs advanced the Chargers to Jackson to play for the second straight season. Jarkel Joiner, Cole Cromwell, DK Metcalf and Terry Williams led the way in order for that to happen.

LAFAYETTE Lafayette made strides under coach John Sherman. The Commodores

went from not winning a game to winning six. Quin Jones and Tyler Williams were the catalysts for an improved team. A victory that Sherman pointed to came over Kossuth in the final week of the season.

“We had a couple of good wins. We beat Kossuth 14 at their place. The game was never in doubt, totally controlled the game from start to finish and they went on to win their division tournament,” Sherman said. “They beat Booneville in the semis and New Site in the finals and both of them were playoff teams, and Booneville went to Jackson. That was a dominant win for us. During the season, we beat an Ingomar team that had more wins than anybody in the state in all classifications.”

There were still some inconsistent moments to overcome for the Commodores. When Jones, a senior, was at

practice and playing in games, Lafayette was a better overall team.

“He gave us rebounding and offense in the lane, around the basket. Those two things are vital,” Sherman said.

“In the games that we won, he’s got 20 plus points. It was unfortunate that he was unable to play in all the games because he was on recruiting visits.”

Williams, a junior, is a good overall athlete who could do a lot of different things with his size. He did a lot of things well, Sherman said.

“He was a well rounded basketball player. At times, I wanted him to be more aggressive and more assertive.

It’s something we stressed and talked about and pushed him on,” Sherman said. “There were times where he let it come to him instead of talking it.

Powerful improvement Harris has become leader for Lady Chargers

Quinn Harris has been getting better and better with her strength. Her skills as a powerlifter have really started to develop, and she is upbeat about what she can accomplish at next month’s MHSAA Class 5A state meet.

Harris finished second in her weight class at the north state championships. It was the kind of performance that had her coach, Jason Russell, excited about the future, especially with so much time to prepare for the next meet.

“Quinn is extremely determined. She is determined to win at everything she does,” Russell said. “She is my favorite worker in the weight room. I love the way she comes in everyday and wanting to create new personal records for herself and to get her teammates better as well.”

Russell thinks so highly of Harris, he even created a nickname for her a few weeks ago. It stems from her new hairstyle, but it also connects with how she has done from a lifting standpoint since her career started.

“I call her Unbeweaveable,” Russell said just before a big laugh. “She walked in with that hairstyle and that was the first thing I said to her, that it’s unbeweaveable, I can’t believe you just did that.”

When Harris did her squats during the north state meet, her extensions allowed her to rest the weight, ever so slightly, without it weighing in on her neck like in the past.

“It did give her a little bit of a cushion on the back of her neck,” Russell said of the hair.

“That hair is everywhere and she doesn’t have a choice but to be over and around the bar. She is a great worker, a great teammate. She encourages the rest of her teammates constantly. Powerlifting isn’t easy to do. It’s a grind. You have to work really, really hard in kind of a dungeon of a weight room. You don’t go out and see a lot of things and then all of a sudden you walk into a competition. She pushes herself everyday she walks in her, and that’s all you can ask.”

Harris said the north state meet was a lot better than what she had been doing, and that was a really big accomplishment for her to finish second.

I said ‘We’re going to steady this out and if we get a good pace on it, we’re going to just keep going,’” Harris said. “I wanted to get it bigger and bigger and bigger until I just had it.”

Confidence is something a lifter needs in order to be successful. And Harris has more confidence than she has ever had in all of the seasons with Oxford.

“I don’t think that it’s just because of my junior year. It’s because I’m trying to set an example for our team,” Harris said about why she is confident and wants to demonstrate it. “I know I may not be the strongest person, but you can never been too weak or too strong to set a good example. I realized that I just didn’t need to practice at practice, that I needed to go home and do a little bit of work.”

Hard work is no issue for Harris, who also works at Papa John’s pizza. Attending Mississippi State is a goal for Harris and even with all the classwork

she has in order to achieve that goal, she has found time to do extra lifting.

“I always have at least one day to practice at home, even if it’s just a little,” Harris said. “I don’t have weights at my house, but I run, suicides and other things like that. My road is really far away from my house on Highway 30, so if I run up and down the road a few times, I feel like I have accomplished something.”

As Harris has improved, so has the team. She was upbeat about how much better the Lady Chargers had gotten, and what they can do in the final meet.

“There is so much potential in this room and people don’t even know their potential or notice it,” she said. “We have one girl in her, Sarah Grace, who came in from the cheerleading team. She didn’t even think she could do any of the weight but then at regionals, she came in first place.

That shocked me. I told her that she had all confidence and all the potential and she was just

trying to hide it from us.”

As for the extra hair, Harris said it does give her a little advantage but she doesn’t think it is the true source of her strength like Samson.

“The true source has been a lot of hard work. It’s been affecting me and everyone else,” she said. “I do get tired a lot, but I think I’ve made it this far and I just can’t stop now just to lose. I have to do better.”

When she got second place, Harris said she felt really good.

Heading in, she wasn’t sure that she would even place.

“My mom and my friends gave me pep talks. I said ‘OK, OK, maybe I can do this,’” Harris said. “There was an incident on my second attempt for squat where my coach actually put my deadlift on my squat. That really freaked me out because I couldn’t do that. I had to get a couple of slaps from my mom that I was going to do this. Coach Russell told me to not think and just do it. I got out there, and when I did it, I was really proud of myself

because I doubted myself. A lot.”

Deadlift is the thing Harris does the best. Her bench press is the thing that needs the most work.

“It’s terrible but I do think I can get 20 more pounds,” Harris said. “My max is 140 and if I can get up to 160, I should be OK. As far as deadlift and squat, I have to go up much bigger than what I have been doing.”

Harris also credited her mother for a lot of her success.

When Harris first went to her to ask to participate, there was some skepticism.

“She said they didn’t have back in her day but she was all for it as long as I did this and something else,” Harris said.

“She felt like it would help me get better for another sport. She wants me to try track next year.

had gotten into the NIT. This group didn’t feel like the others that Kennedy did great things with.

That goes for his NCAA teams as well.

There were some factors that prevented Ole Miss from being further along this year. Sebastian Saiz missing games with his eye injury is right at the top. Where would the Rebels have been if they could have pulled out that game against South Carolina? Granted the Gamecocks didn’t make the NCAAs, but they were a solid team, a club that would have given the Rebels another key notch on their belt. And who is to say what a little momentum could have done? A loss to South Carolina came four days before playing at Mississippi State. That game ended as a loss for the Rebels. That setback, as well as the one to George Mason in the third game of the year, were the two worst for the Rebels.

A win here or there can do a lot for a college team. Pulling a game out of the jaws of defeat has sparked more teams than not. Ole Miss never had that type of spark this season.

Maybe things will be different this coming year. It will be tough to find a replacement for Moody, but Kennedy has done it before. He’s

The class that is coming in to school this summer, this fall, is the first that was really impacted by the building of The Pavilion. This coming summer, when Kennedy and his assistants are on the road recruiting, it will be the class that really buys into where the program is headed, with The Pavilion serving as the backdrop.

It would have been nice to have an NCAA or NIT trip to help sell the prospects, but The Pavilion should make the biggest impact in regards to recruiting in the next few months. The facility already has, yes, but not like it will, not when all the summer camps that are right around the corner and the prospects that come for football games.

Stefan Moody was honored again as a member of an All-SEC team. The Associated Press named him to the first team for the second-straight season. It came less than a week after he was named to the All-SEC team by the league’s coaches.

Moody is the first player since Vanderbilt’s John Jenkins in 2011 and 2012 to earn consensus (Associated Press and coaches) first team All-SEC honors in consecutive seasons.

The Kissimmee, Florida native is the first Rebel since Ansu Sesay in 1997 and 1998 to earn back-toback first-team honors. The 2016 C Spire Howell Trophy winner, as the best men’s collegiate player in Mississippi, is the 15th All-SEC honoree under head coach Andy Kennedy, which is the third most in the league over the last 10 years trailing only Kentucky and Florida.

The fifth-fastest player in reach 1,000 career points in Ole Miss history, Moody led the SEC, and ranks sixth nationally, in scoring at 23.6 point per game. This season he became only the fifth player in Ole Miss history and the 26th player in SEC history to top 700 points in a season.

Chargers grow as a team in Perfect Game Showcase

EMERSON, Ga. — Oxford’s Chargers came to the Perfect Game Showcase Tournament at the LakePoint Complex to see some tough competition and how they would stack up against it.

Oxford ended up playing four very tough defensive games where one hit or one play made all the difference. The Chargers ended up going 2-2 in the tournament and finished in the semifinal game.

The result was not ideal of course, but Oxford coach Chris Baughman learned a little bit more about his team during the three-day tournament.

“We came out here and we threw our hat in there,” Baughman said. “Both games we lost were one-run games. We competed OK. We’ve got some things we’ve got to get better on before division play starts. We are going to keep working. I think we showed we can play with anybody. I think we are a little disappointed in one if not both of those games we lost. Hopefully it’ll build some chemistry. It gave us a chance to look at some guys that don’t normally get to play all the time in some situations.”

One of those guys that impressed Baughman was reserve outfielder Giles Lamar who saw action in all four games during the tournament either defensively on the field or running as a pinch runner on the base paths.

“I was real pleased with Giles Lamar on the weekend,” Baughman said of the junior. “Something that will never show up in any article is that we found a guy that is very aggressive and smart on the base paths that wants to win. He competed all weekend, he was in the game mentally whatever he was playing or not. I thought he really did a great job.”

The Chargers played Buford (Ga.) in their third game. Buford finished ahead of Oxford in many national polls last season. They lost 1-0. Carson Stinnett got the tough-luck losing decision on the mound. Duncan Graeber was the only Charger who garnered two hits in the game. The Chargers left nine on base in the contest.

Oxford finished off the tournament playing Hillgrove (Ga.). They won 4-2. Reid Markle got the win efficiently on the mound getting seven batters out on one pitch.

Thomas Dillard garnered his second save of the season. Ben Bianco finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI to lead the Chargers.

“All six of our guys gave us a chance to be in every ballgame and give us a chance to win,” Baughman said of his pitching staff whom allowed just seven runs in the four games. “That’s what our guys do. We pound the zone, try to keep people off balance and they did a great job. They did exactly what we expected out of them. Houston had that sequence against the three-hole hitter for McEachern and was just

great. Jason just threw his tail off.

He threw well enough to win against the best team we’ve played in two years. That (Gulliver Prep) team (Friday) night was the best team we’ve ever played since I’ve been here.

“Carson was lights out, he didn’t deserve to lose the ballgame, we just didn’t get a hit when we need to,” Baughman said of Stinnett’s efforts against Buford. “Reed did an awesome job in that last ball game keeping them off balance.”

Kessinger, who has been to a few Perfect Game events in the past either as an individual or with his travel team the Dulin Dodgers, thought this experience where playing with his high school teammates in this environment is one he will remember for a long time.

“I’ve been able to play here before,” Kessinger said. “But to come here and play with this group of guys and just get the whole experience playing with the best high schools in the country, something I’ll never forget.”

Drew Bianco, rated as the 99th best sophomore according to Perfect Game, thought he drew some attention from MLB scouts and college coaches, especially after hitting his home run in his first atbat of the tournament.

“I think I showed that I can hit the ball with power and just be able put the ball in play and also show off my glove a little bit,” Bianco said. “I’m glad that I could contribute to the team’s wins and hopefully we can keep this thing going.”

EXTRA BASES Oxford’s last five losses have all been by one run, dating back to the 2014 playoffs, including two 10 contests. Oxford has three saves on the season so far, more than the two the Chargers had all of last season. The Oxford pitching staff finished with a tournament ERA of 1.30.

OM's Bjork still has confidence in Kennedy

Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork is confident he has the right man leading his school’s basketball program.

The NCAA tournament started Tuesday night in Dayton without Ole Miss. The Rebels had been a part of March Madness for two of the last three seasons.

This time, without any major résumé-building wins, Ole Miss never seemed to gain traction in

the conversation.

A season that included 20 wins, a rash of injuries and the SEC’s leading scorer in guard Stefan Moody ended Sunday when the Rebels did not receive an NIT bid and chose not to pursue opportunities in lesser postseason events.

Ole Miss has participated in either the NCAA tournament or the NIT in seven of 10 seasons under coach Andy Kennedy.

“He’s done a phenomenal job,” Bjork said. “I believe Andy can take us to new heights in

terms of making a run at the tournament, making the tournament and being consistent every year as we contend for titles.”

Kennedy, a native of Louisville, is 233-139 in 11 seasons, 212-126 at Ole Miss. He is the second-longest tenured coach in the SEC. Kennedy signed a contract extension last May when he received a bump in salary to $1.925 million per year. State law allows contracts of a maximum four years in length.

Bjork said he and Kennedy will evaluate the state of the program soon.

“We’ve had some preliminary discussions. Now we can close this year and focus on the future,” Bjork said. “We’ll sit down over the next couple of weeks.

He’ll go and recruit and solidify the roster for next year.”

As Moody departs, Miami transfer Deandre Burnett, a Parade All-American in 2012, becomes eligible, and Kennedy will welcome four signees in a class that is currently ranked No.

type of player. He could score well.

He passes the ball well. He’s a pretty good ball handler. Down the stretch, he was guarding the other team’s best player. He really improved but he has lots of room for more improvement. He is a guy that has D-1 offers in football. He can run, he’s 6-2 and you can do a lot of things on the court at 6-2.”

OXFORD When Tyler looked at his four on the court, he saw different talents, and strengths. Each brought something unique to the court and each looked to each other through the long basketball season to solidify win, cut a deficit of simply pick up the slack.

Joiner, who led the Chargers in scoring with 30.1 points during the regular season, was the catalyst as a junior. He surpassed the 1,000point club this season, and Tyler has called him the best player he’s coached on several different occasions.

“Jarkel has gone through his junior basketball season at the age of 16. As his coach, and others, you have to remember he’s still a teenager. He’s young and he’s had a lot on his plate,” Tyler said. “The expectations for him were high.

And for the most part, he met them. A gold ball in Jarkel’s possession, that’s not what validates a successful season for him. He had great numbers. He led on and off the court. He had his second taste of the state playoffs and he has already evaluated his year and set short term and long term goals for this upcoming year.”

Metcalf, a senior, was pivotal in the way the Chargers ran their 2-3 zone defense because he is so athletic. There were times as well when the offense went through Metcalf, and the Chargers always used him from an inside-out standpoint.

“He was very versatile for us this year and very willing and open to being used in several different ways and different strategies throughout the season on the offensive and defensive end,” Tyler said. “There were times where we used him as a decoy because his DK draws a lot of attention. There were things we ran away from DK because we had so much attention on him. And there were definitely times where we could use DK’s size to exploit the other team and his foot quickness to exploit the other team. There were times where he would be the front of our defense and then times where he would be in the back of our defense, blocking and altering shots and starting our fast break for us. He’s a coach’s dream because he

would do whatever you asked of him.”

Metcalf finished the season averaging 13.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. He also averaged 2.0 blocks per contest.

Tyler raved about Cromwell’s heart and passion for the game saying he was off the chart in those categories.

He finished the year averaging 5.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

“There were times where Cromwell had the No. 1 assignment on defense and we’re taking Metcalf off and putting him off somewhere else,” Tyler said of the senior. “I think Cromwell has been one of the most team players I have ever coached. He’s at every open gym. He’s here early and stays late.”

Williams, a junior, came to Oxford from South Panola. He finished with 10.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.

“He’s a 6 foot guard/big man, a giant killer. He showed up all across the stat book on rebounds on the offensive and defensive end, on put backs on the offensive and defensive end,” Tyler said. “I think his love for basketball and his desire to just compete and to do everything to help his teammates win catapulted him in this program to tapping his potential. Six OM athletes earn All-America status in track Six Ole Miss athletes earned All-America recognition from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their efforts at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.

Five Rebel men garnered firstteam status – Ryan Walling in the 5,000 meters (seventh place, 13 minutes:53.52 seconds) and the distance medley relay quartet of Robert Domanic, Derek Gutierrez, Craig Engels and Sean Tobin (third place, 9:31.82).

Raven Saunders earned secondteam status in the women’s shot put (11th place, 16.59m/545.25), while Lindsey Murray was named honorable mention in the women’s pole vault.

Athletes who finished 1-8 at NCAAs this past weekend in individual events and as part of relay teams were designated first team All-America. The rest of the finishers were second team All-America - unless he or she did not finish or was disqualified from competition and in that case, was named honorable mention.

Ole Miss now has 156 AllAmerica selections among 75 different athletes in program history.

The total of six indoor AllAmericans ties the school record set in 1999, when men’s All-Americans included Savante’ Stringfellow (long jump), Alonzo Banks (800m, 4x400m relay), Jimmy Love (4x400m

relay) and Wayne Woollery (4x400m relay). Women’s AllAmericans were Teneeshia Jones (60m) and Tisha Parker (long jump).

Walling, a graduate transfer from the University of North Carolina, earned All-America distinction for the first time in his college career. He is the second runner in school history to be an All-American in the 5,000, joining Pablo Sierra (1993). The Cary, North Carolina, native finished his indoor career as the SEC champion in both the 3,000 and 5,000.

Domanic and Engels were outdoor All-Americans last season (1500m and 800m, respectively), while Gutierrez and Tobin earn that status for the first time in their careers. They

are the first four Ole Miss athletes to be named All-Americans in the DMR. The 1985 men’s squad of Melvin Dean, K.C. Nielsen, Brian Pope and Victor Shine placed seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships, but All-America honors only went to the top six finishers at that time.

The DMR, which features four legs of 1200, 400, 800 and 1600 meters, was an electric event for the Rebels in 2016. Three different groupings made history in their own ways. Domanic, Ryan Manahan, Engels and Tobin set the school record of 9:30.48 at Penn State, while Trevor Gilley, Engels, Manahan and Domanic broke the SEC meet record in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with a

time of 9:37.14. Their three times this year are the best three in school history ahead of the previous mark of 9:38.20 set by the 1985 team at the national meet.

The overwhelming favorite to win her third straight NCAA shot put title, Saunders finished 11th after recording a first-attempt mark of 54 feet, 5.25 inches followed by two fouls. Still, Saunders becomes the first Ole Miss female All-American in the shot put and the second by either gender, joining Derek McGuire (2009 outdoor).

Ole Miss now turns its attention to the outdoor season, which begins this weekend at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Boone praises current atmosphere of athletics at OM

Editor’s Note: This is the (E second in a two-part series with former Ole Miss Athletics Director Pete Boone.)

When Pete Boone was in transition from his role with the university to retirement, or the next stage of his professional and personal life, the SEC Network had yet to show its first athletic event.

The budget in the athletics department has increased tremendously thanks to the network. Extra money in the budget has allowed schools like Ole Miss to start new projects, improve existing facilities or take care of coaches and their staffs better than ever before.

The economy was just starting to return four years ago when Boone was leaving. Now, things are much better, and as Boone put it, “everyone is happy and

they have more discretionary income to spend.”

This past January, The Pavilion opened to the general public. Boone was in attendance when the Rebels hosted Alabama in men’s basketball. The project had been in the works for years, back when Boone was where Ross Bjork is now, and back when Danny White helped get things going as the senior associate AD. “The thing that is fantastic is to see it come to fruition. It took two really tough parts. The first part, the origination, that’s really tough to do,” Boone said.

“And then probably the hardest is finishing. And they finished it well. We had about $60 million, maybe about $70 million, in pledges when I left. But that didn’t get the job done. With Hugh (Freeze) coming in and Ross coming in, they have really done a fantastic

job. And Andy (Kennedy) has been real good. He’s gone to the NCAAs and winning 20 games a year.

The things that are drawing the fans’ attention is very positive right now. Ross has done fantastic job of rallying the donors. And Keith (Carter) has done a great job, so it’s great to see all their hard work come to be something like that.”

When Boone was in office, he said the goal was to always take care of the essential things like a new administration office and the Manning Center. The basketball practice facility, the soccer fields, the expansion of Oxford-University Stadium and the Gillom Center were started or completed during Boone’s two tenures.

“Those were kind of have to things. Now, they’re able to go and doing a fantastic job of creating an environment,” Boone said. “It’s just

absolutely wonderful.

Other fans from other schools just can’t believe what has been done here.

I’ve talked to the athletic directors of other schools. It’s just amazing, it really is.”

About the only thing that is lacking, Boone said, was a dedicated Hall of Fame facility. The original plan was for that particular item to be included into The Pavilion.

“We wanted a section of that to be open during the day for folks on ground level but there is only so much you can put into those areas and we decided not to do that,” Boone said.

“We still need one because we have so much memorabilia from Archie’s stuff to Charlie Conerly to Jake Gibbs. Fans need to see it.

That’s history, that’s tradition.”

No. 9 Rebels take down UAB BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The No. 9 Ole Miss baseball team increased its winning streak to 11 games with an 8-1 victory over UAB Tuesday night at Regions Field. The Rebels (16-1) scored three runs in the first and never looked back, taking the first game of the mid-week series against the Blazers (6-10).

Freshman Andy Pagnozzi (3-0) earned the win in just his second career start. The right-hander went a career-long 6.1 innings and allowed just one run on two hits.

He also struck out four and did not issue a walk during his quality outing.

“Pagnozzi was really able to command the fastball and locate on both sides of the plate,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “I was proud of his composure and

performance tonight.

He’s been fantastic all season long.”

The Rebels scored eight runs on 13 hits, including five doubles and two home runs. Junior catcher Henri Lartigue went 3-for-5 with a tworun homer, and senior Cameron Dishon hit his third home run of the season as part of a multihit night. Nine Rebels recorded at least one hit throughout the evening.

UAB starter Adam Lamar (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season.

Lamar entered contest with a 0.96 ERA, allowing just two earned runs in 18.2 inning of work. However, the Rebels got three runs off the starter in the opening frame, and Lamar lasted just three innings. At the plate, Esteban Tresgallo and Holt Davis recorded four of the team’s five hits.
