Traffic will be a little more brisk this weekend. Lines at grocery stores are expected to be longer. Same goes for restaurants and popular establishments that

cater to refreshments. College baseball has returned to Oxford-University Stadium and that always means more business, and more activity, than just a normal summer.

Ole Miss, the No. 1 seed in the Oxford Regional, will be hosting a regional for

the seventh time since 2004. Back then, the crowds were big, but not like what was expected over the weekend. The three-day event will start Friday afternoon as No. 2 seed Tulane, a member of TURN TO REGIONAL PAGE 6

YAC to hold membership drive

This Saturday from 6-8 p.m., the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council will be holding a membership drive in conjunction with the kick-off of the Summer Sunset Series.

The event will feature live music, refreshments and arts activities.

The purpose of the drive is to recruit more members for the arts council. Membership fees go entirely toward supporting local art events and come with a wide variety of benefits.

This year is the 45th anniversary of the YAC and it’s 10th year of being headquartered in the Powerhouse. The arts council has 325 days of art-related programing each year, reaches 90,000 residents and tourists, 1,200 artists and 750 students. Events organized by the YAC bring in around $1.5 million to the local community. Director Wayne Andrews says this a lot to celebrate, but that it is also important to look toward the future.

“Becoming a member of the arts council is important for a two reasons,” Andrews explained. “Think of it the way you think of investing for your kids to play soccer.

The arts council provides support not for just kids’ programming, but for adults and the entire community. If you’re trying to encourage tourism, everyone loves when our hotels are full, we provide programs that do just that. Second, we provide a sense of community. A little bit of investment goes a long way.”

Last year, the arts council raised a budget of about $470,000, according to Andrews. That money was largely comprised of membership fees, ticket sales and donations. All of that money was turned around and directly invested in the local community.

Membership pricing varies depending on your role in the community and on which level participants choose. For example, teachers and students pay $20 a year for membership. Individuals in the community

pay $35 a year. Businesses can join at a rate of $150 a year. Then there is the option of adding an endowment, of whatever size, to the membership fee. There are also higher levels of membership that go up to $1,000. The YAC offers a family plan as well for $50 a year.

YAC members receive discounts on tickets to arts related events and fundraisers around town. Members are also given special pricing on arts council-sponsored classes and workshops, including summer camps and holiday activities for children. An invitation-only holiday ornament auction, pre-sale ticket options and special shout outs at events are just a few of the perks YAC members can claim upon joining.

First Baptist to kick off annual VBS Monday

First Baptist Church of Oxford will begin its Vacation Bible School this Monday, June 6 and go through Friday, June 10, lasting each day from 9 a.m. to noon.

The theme of this year’s VBS is “Submerged,” according to Director of Children’s Ministries and Director of Vacation Bible School Dina Addy.

“The gist of it is that Jesus sees our hearts,” Addy said when asked to elaborate on the theme for this year. “He sees us down deep, and He wants to know us and save us.”

Activities at the camp include a variety of arts and crafts, songs, dances and other engaging curriculum. The Bible study taking place during the camp will primarily be focusing on the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. People from across the church’s staff will be spending their time doing what they can to contribute to the success of the camp, all on a volunteer basis.

First Baptist’s Vacation Bible School is open to any child in the community that has completed kindergarten, and is currently enrolled up to the sixth grade. The camp is free to attend.

Addy has been with First Baptist for eight years. She and her family relocated to Oxford from Ripley when her husband was offered a job in the area. Back in Ripley, she was a Sunday school teacher and spent much of her time dealing with little ones. She describes working in children’s ministry as her calling. Addy said that she has always loved working with kids and being able to make a positive impact in their lives.

“My favorite part of it is just seeing the kids,” she said. “Right now we have 147 kids registered. Last year we had 220 children. To come in everyday and see those kids and the excitement on their faces, just the fun of it.”

That number of kids registered for the camp is expected to grow this week as more and more parents register before the start date of the camp Monday.

This is Addy’s first year serving as director

of the Vacation Bible School. In years past she has been involved in some capacity or another, usually as the person over snack time. She said she always thoroughly enjoyed this job because it was fun to think of new ways to make the food relate back to the lessons the kids were learning. Plus, no kid is ever sad or grumpy when the snack lady comes around.

Addy is looking forward to the camp and wants to make sure everyone knows First Baptist’s doors are always open.

UM Medical Center celebrates 2016 graduation JACKSON — For the fourth straight year, The University of Mississippi Medical Center, broke its record for degrees conferred to health care and science professionals.

The Class of 2016 is 950 strong. In 2013, the record was 677. That jumped to 847 in 2014, and in 2015, 863 graduates received degrees.

The graduates of the schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences, Nursing, and Health Related Professions are beginning their careers with the aim of improving health and

the quality of life for people across Mississippi and the nation. They were recognized during UMMC’s 60th Commencement May 27 at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, and Jeffrey Vitter, chancellor of the University of Mississippi, addressed more than 3,000 guests who came to cheer on their family and friends.

Boys State meets at Ole Miss

The University of Mississippi has been selected to host the American Legion’s Boys State this year, and will continue to do so until 2018.

Boys State, founded in 1938, is composed entirely of rising high school seniors and designed to allow young men from across the state to learn what it takes run local and state governments. The summit at Ole Miss is a week–long event in which the boys will hear from speakers that play significant roles in governing around the state, including Gov. Phil Bryant.

The boys will be running the fictitious state of Magnolia. Elections will be held in which delegates elect peers to serve in offices ranging from governor all the way down to local city and county governments.

Delegates elected to office will get to meet with their real-world counterparts before the entire operation is turned over to them. For the next several days, the boys will be operating the state of Magnolia with a functioning legislature and all other ins and outs of government.

Local attorney and former Director of Boys State Hiram Eastland still works with the program as their senior advisor. Eastland also participated in the program as a delegate in 1995. Currently, he is working with the 337 delegates and about 35 staff mem-

OBITUARIES NANCY SHELENE MCCOY Nancy Shelene McCoy, 61, passed away Friday, May 27, 2016, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. A funeral service was held Tuesday, May 31, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Shaun Tedford officiating. Graveside service were held at Old Mormon Cemetery in Booneville.

ANDREW GRASS Andrew “Jack” Grass, 77, passed away Monday, May 31, 2016 at his home in Water Valley. Grass retired after 20 years of service from the United States Army where he served as Command Sgt. Major. He served in many areas including two tours in Vietnam and two tours in Germany. While serving he earned the following medals: Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), Army Commendation Medal (2d Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), National Defense Service Medal, Four Overseas Service Bars, Driver and Mechanic Badge, Meritorious Unit Commendation (2d Award), Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Republic of Vietnam Technical Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Engineer Badge.

Sunset Summer Series set for Sunday

This Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Grove, Holy Ghost Electric Show will be kicking off the long-awaited Summer Sunset Concert Series.

The concert series originated out of the office of retired Ole Miss teacher and administrator Gloria Kellum when she was still working at the university.

The idea was to have an event that engaged both the university and the Oxford-Lafayette community.

The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, the team at the Gertrude C. Ford Center and the University of Mississippi Museum are among the groups that have helped to sponsor the series over the years.

Each concert in the series will be taking place every Sunday in June at 6 p.m. at the Grove. One band will be playing each Sunday and is sponsored by a different community or campus based organization. The Ole Miss Student Union will be sponsoring Holy Ghost

“Those of you who will receive your degrees today and soon begin practicing the healing arts share a common legacy with all who have gone before you — and that is a mark of quality,” Vitter said.

Community Enhancement Coordinator Amanda Gholson has been helping to run things for Visit Oxford’s portion of sponsorship.

“It’s really just something

fun to do in June,” Gholson said. “The catch is that most of the students are not in town, so we want to be able to provide an event that brings the university and local community together and give them a reason to get out. I feel like everyone looks forward to this event.”

When Gholson first joined the team at Visit Oxford, she said that she was very frequently asked when the planning for the concert series would begin. She said the flood of emails came with questions about who would be playing and what other members of the community could do to contribute to the success of the concert series. She said the outpouring of support has really gotten her excited about the upcoming events.

Each concert in the Summer Sunset Concert Series is completely free and open to the public and is suitable for all ages.

It’s dream that Johnson, born in Greece while his dad was stationed there in the U.S. Air Force, has had for some time.

“My grandfather died of a brain tumor when I was younger, so I had a passion for it,” said Johnson who attended high school in Ocean Springs and graduated from Mississippi College in Clinton. “I started medical school and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I’ve always been interested in surgery because I love to work with my hands, and I love the complexities of neuroscience.”

Neurosurgery is a plum residency for any School of Medicine graduate. Johnson will spend seven years as a resident.

“I had peace knowing I’d done everything I could up to that point,” he said of interviewing with the Dallas medical center. “It’s an incredibly humbling experience.”

Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory science from the School of Health Related Professions. Getting her degree was a journey – in fact, she traveled an hour-and-a-half a day each way, usually six days a week, to attend classes and offer tutoring.

“I did it for my parents,” said Jones, 27, who rea bachelor’s ceived degree in biomedical sciences from Mississippi State University in 2012.

“Both are retired educators, and I want to make them proud.”

Jones, who grew up in Laurel and finds time to juggle her boyfriend and four dogs, is job-hunting as she studies for her board examination.

“I see myself staying in Mississippi, wherever the opportunity is,” she said.

Among those receiving accolades was Dr. Jennifer Bain, assistant professor and interim department chair of periodontics and preventive sciences in the School of Dentistry. She is winner of the 2016 Regions Bank TEACH Prize, given to the person who most represents the highest quali-

ties of the Medical Center’s academic faculty.

The six students who received top honors were: Amanda Daggett of Jackson, Waller S. Leathers Award for the medical student with the highest academic average for four years; Brannon Myrick of Pearl, Wallace V. Mann Jr. Award for the dental student with the highest academic average for four years; Davelin Woodard of Oxford, Christine L. Oglevee Memorial Award for the outstanding School of Nursing baccalaureate graduate; Robert Rivers of Ellisville, Richard N. Graves Award for the registered nurse deemed most outstanding by the faculty in clinical and overall performance; Brenna Shoemaker of Flowood, Dr. Virginia Stansel Tolbert award for the student with the highest academic average in the School of Health Related Professions.

the American Conference, takes on No. 3 seed Boston College of the ACC. The Rebels, who won 43 games this year, tangle with No. 4 Utah, the winner of the Pac-12 Conference, to end the first day of action Friday night at 7.

“We are excited to host the seventh NCAA regional in Oxford this weekend,” said Stephen Ponder, Ole Miss Associate Athletics Director who help submit the bid to the committee in charge of the selection process. “We know our fans love June baseball in Swayze and we look forward to hosting Tulane, Boston College and Utah and sharing the experience of Swayze and Oxford during the regionals. See you at Swayze.”

Whoever wins the Oxford Regional will advance to the super regionals June 10-13. Oxford is paired up with the Coral Gables (Fla.) Regional, which is hosted by the University of Miami.

The Hurricanes (45-11) are the No. 3 overall seed in the field of 64 teams, which means they will host the winner as long as they win. If Miami is upset, and Ole Miss comes out with three wins, then expect the road to Omaha to play in the College World Series to be sorted out here in Oxford.

Two years ago, the

Rebels advanced to the CWS, their first since 1972, by defeating Louisiana-Lafayette in three games.

Ole Miss players felt they had a good case to be a national seed heading into Monday's selection show, especially with an RPI in the top 5. The Rebels have only been a national seed once, with that happening back in 2005. Shortstop Errol Robinson shook off the disappointment with the reminder that the Rebels will still be at home, playing in front of a packed house.

“It's huge. It's always an advantage when you get to play in front of the fans in Oxford,” Robinson said.

“It's really great to have so many people come out and support us.”

Brady Bramlett, who will start the opener on the mound for Ole Miss, said playing at home means that the Oxford Regional is the best in the country because of the atmosphere.

“It's incredible to have that crowd. Since 2014, we've had the highest average crowd at all the regionals and I feel confident that we will have those same numbers again,” Bramlett said.

Moon over June hat is it about June? Is it your favorite month?

Songwriters love the sixth month of the year perhaps because so many love-related words rhyme with June.

“Moon, spoon, tune, swoon… pantaloon.” Even Jimmy Buffett, the Sultan of Summer, professes that he’s, “Wishing every month of the year could be June.” Of course the song is entitled, “Cliches.”

But June is for real; June love is more than a cliché. June is the most popular month for weddings and The Old Farmer’s Almanac sheds light on why: “June is still the most popular month to marry, followed

by August, July, May, and September. The goddess Juno was the protector of women in all aspects of life, but especially in marriage and childbearing, so a wedding in Juno's month was considered most auspicious.”

In June, school’s out. It’s warm without being oppressive (if you’re lucky) and it’s the start of summer.

June represents long days with just enough humidity to make sunsets interesting (again, if you’re lucky).

On the other hand, June is also the start of hurricane season so it’s not all spoon, moon, and swoon.

Fish feel the glow of June’s charms. Though the spawn can start in April, old time bream fishermen look to June – especially the full moon of June - when bream beds are made and eggs laid. On some warm June mornings, you can actually smell a bream bed overflowing with the distinct odor of life.

While June is a perfect month for weddings, dreaming on the beach, or smelling grass, the money gurus at CNBC warn that June is the worst month for the stock market. "Eight of the last ten Junes have been down," Michael Browne, fund manager at Martin Currie told CNBC. "It is the worst month of the year in the last decade, not by a little bit but by a lot. Just bet on a negative June, sell on the last day of May. It has worked at least eight out of the last ten times."

Luckily, like so many of you, I have a team of financial wizards who manage my portfolio so I can completely concentrate on June and the promise of Endless Summer.

Looking through old photographs of my childhood, there I am with neighborhood pals, running around with crewcuts and no clothes save for a pair of seersucker shorts. No shirt, no shoes, who cares? We were miniature Tarzans running wild and free from sunup to sundown. When it got too hot for bare feet there was always the city pool. upon grown-ups, the month of June stirs up memories of long days and warm nights, lightning bugs, cookouts and open possibilities. Gardens begin kicking in and the first shoots and blossoms can be seen.

Tomato plants begin their surge upward. Can there be no more optimistic sight than the first home grown tomatoes making their presence known? Green and dusty at first, at night they bring visions of tomato sandwiches dancing in our heads. Mayo and white bread, standing over the sink, juice running down your forearm.

It is said April is the cruelest month because of its false promise but what about June? Summer is fleeting and June may be the fastest month. Look up and it will be gone, to be replaced by triple-digit temperatures and humidity that approaches waterboarding.

So let us celebrate June and enjoy its mild nights and summery days.

Baseball is still alive in Oxford and this weekend we welcome visitors from Utah, New Orleans and Boston. The Utes and Beantowners might think our heat is a myth during this week of 80 degree readings but the humidity should make believers of them. I hope they enjoy themselves – to a point.

For the next couple of weeks, the days will continue to get longer until June 20, the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. That night will also feature a full moon so get your bream rig ready.

I intend to get out there and smell the grass grow. There is magic in the air and her name is June.

Jewels by SarCar has inspired, taught OHS student

While most of her friends are looking for summer jobs on the Square, 17-year-old Sara Caroline Bridgers will be working from home on her very successful jewelry line. The Oxford High School senior never imagined that she would own a small business and be juggling school at the same time.

Jewels by SarCar started on accident in August, 2015. For a person who really doesn't wear a lot of jewelry, Bridgers thought she would head to the Square to purchase a necklace for school picture day.

Once she got home her necklace broke, but instead of getting upset she restrung it on an extra suede cord that she found in her closet. When she got to school the next day, all of her friends were complimenting the necklace and asking where she got it.

“I’ve always been crafting, and one of my friends bought the same necklace that also broke,” Bridgers said. “She asked me if I could restring hers. I started making these necklaces for my friends, then that turned into making gifts for people and then my mom decided one day enough was enough. It wasn’t cost effective to keep making them, so I decided to start selling necklaces and bracelets online.”

A friend wore a necklace to a college visit day and wanted to tag Bridgers in an Instagram post. Not even having an Instagram or name for her business yet, she quickly decided on the name Jewels by SarCar (short for Sara Caroline), which is her nickname.

She does not have a Facebook page, but her website also features a blog, which allows her to share more photos than Instagram.

By November of 2015, the business had really taken off and Bridgers decided to host a trunk show at her house. She had made 100 necklaces and 50 bracelets, both of which completely sold out in 35

“Everything was gone and we were wrapping up gifts so quickly. It was really cool to hear that people had gotten them as gifts in their stockings and were excited about it on Christmas Day,” Bridgers said. “I love seeing girls on Snapchat wearing my pieces on vacation. It’s amazing to think people are wearing my designs and making memories in it.”

In December, Jewels by SarCar was in 30 states.

Now the designs are featured in 42 states. When she first started, Oxford was her most popular city, but now Tulsa, Oklahoma has that distinction. Her jewelry pieces can be found all over the South, not just all over Mississippi. Stores in Tupelo, Jackson, Corinth, and Memphis invited her to sell her pieces in their shops.

They were all sold out in a week. People grew frustrated as her products sold out before they could get one. She made 15 to 20

pieces at a time to release on her website and those would sell out within 12 minutes. Now she has more in stock online, and fills about eight to 12 orders a day.

“If I had a choice I would just make jewelry all day, but my parents have to remind me that school comes first,” she said. “At night I’ll put an hour aside to fill orders and it’s definitely more fun than schoolwork, but sometimes it can get overwhelming. I have a business that’s an LLC, and I’m stressing about the ACT at the same time.”

Her parents stepped in to help her with the legal side of her business.

“I had to file taxes this year. That’s definitely something they don’t teach you in high school. I’ve really learned a lot through this process.”

Her bestseller is the turquoise stone on tan suede because that was the original piece she made and the first one her classmates fell in love with.

Bridgers says her favorite pieces vary season to season. One of her favorite combinations right now is white on white, the white stone with a white suede cord. She also likes the royal blue stone on royal blue suede, as it makes for a fun pop of color and is an statement interesting piece. Online orders can pick the color stone and the color cord they want.

Bridgers enjoys the different color combinations that customers pick out, sometimes mixing and matching colors she never thought would go together.

“I wanted to create something that is as unique as each individual is, I hate when everyone is matching and the same,” Bridgers said. “I never make the same necklace over and over again.”

She also loves when other girls tag her in Instagram posts because no two girls will wear her pieces alike. The wrap bracelets can double as necklaces, and there are multiple different ways to wear them.

“Our online market is big, but getting the line into stores would be great because I think people like to be able to touch it and feel the product themselves,” she said. “I wore one of my new pieces to a music festival and it sold out in a few hours because sometimes people like to see you wearing it and they can visualize how it could look on them. I also keep my prices lower than other jewelry. I wanted to keep them low so that girls in high school can afford my pieces.”

When she’s not making jewelry, some of Bridgers hobbies include: modeling, photography and blogging. She likes to use her blog as a way to spread her message to others.

“I want to inspire younger girls to do what they want to do and not be nervous because of their age,” she said. “I just want girls to know that you can do what you want to do no matter how old you are.”

Another important part of her business is that she wanted to share her faith.

“The whole broken necklace concept reminds me that we’re all broken people and through God we can all be made into

something better.”

The best thing for her business has been social media and word of mouth.

She decided to hire brand ambassadors to help expand her business even more.

“I thought I might get 30 responses from people.

What I received was 370 applications,” Bridgers said. “Every single one was awesome, and it was so hard to narrow it down. My friends helped me pick 10 who are all different ages and living in different states. We have a Groupme chat and they all find different ideas that are really helpful. It’s funny when you pick up a new state like South Dakota, and you see how fast it can spread. All it takes is one person and then all their friends will want it too. I really enjoy it and love watching it grow.

My friends are really supportive and they wear the jewelry more than I do!”

“You know you’ve made it when you see girls on the square wearing your jewelry,” she said. “I’ll just kind of laugh to myself because they pass me and have no idea it was made by me.”

Hard work, success makes OM's Smith Sportsman of the Month t seems like Mike Smith has been in Oxford longer than two years. The Ole Miss softball coach has accomplished a ton, so it feels like he has been around for four or even five years. It's hard for some to understand just how low the Ole Miss softball program was before Smith arrived from McNeese State.

The players, like seniors Natalie Martinez and Madi Osias, both said that losing was accepted. Playing softball was not the main focus of past teams, and worrying about winning was way down the list.

Smith changed that mentality. He got his players to understand that they could win games, and bond together, all at the same time.

Smith was able to not only emphasize the importance of winning games, but show how wins and hard work translated to other aspects of being a student-athlete.

His style garnered success in 2015 and it really took off this past spring. All the records were broken from a wins standpoint by this 2016 team. They went to the SEC Tournament, they beat ranked teams, and they battled all the way until the end against the likes of Oklahoma, the No. 3 national seed, in their first trip to the NCAAs. As a result of all the hard work, Smith is the Oxford Citizen Sportsperson of the Month for May. In his case, the award is good for several months of success, even he is only recognized for it one time.

“I'm humbled to be that person,” Smith said. “I just love being here at this university and I just try to do my job on a daily basis and try to run this program.”

The no-nonsense, head-down approach of Smith has been noticed by a lot of others across the nation.

All the winning, all the records, and all the extra media exposure, is something that is paying off right now.

“The success that we have had over the last three weeks from a national standpoint, our camp numbers have just skyrocketed over the past two weeks,” Smith said. “We were averaging six to 10 per week

All-Citizen Baseball Chargers, 'Dores won games with talent, competitive drive

Chris Baughman called this year's senior class the best to ever put on an Oxford High uniform. When you win a second straight MHSAA Class 5A state title, and 63 games in two seasons, it's hard to argue that statement.

The Chargers were loaded again with talent. From Houston Roth and Jason Barber on the mound, to Grae Kessinger playing shortstop, to Drew Bianco and Duncan Graeber controlling the right side of the infield, to Sage Mullins and Preston Perkins tracking

down balls in the outfield, the Chargers impressed all over. That also doesn't factor in the outstanding play of Thomas Dillard at the plate, and behind it. Or Tag Gatlin coming on to provide reliability at the bottom of the order in the place of the injured Ben Bianco. All of them played a key part in being named to the All-Citizen baseball team for 2016. Joining the group from Oxford are four players from Lafayette, seniors Will Christian, Will Cullen, Mack Bishop and junior Tyler Williams.

“They're a tremendous group of baseball players with what they've accomplished,” Baughman said about his

group. “Not only this year, but last year as well. To play the entire year with the pressure they did, with it coming from me, is remarkable, without a doubt. I'm just proud of the way they finished.”

Barber and Roth played for the Class 5A north state title every year they were members of the varsity squad. That followed up a tremendous two-year career in middle school, the first place Baughman saw the duo dominate opposing teams.

Ole Miss is hosting an NCAA Baseball Regional for the second time in three seasons and for the seventh time since 2004.

No. 1 seed Rebels glad to be back home

Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco, and his players, knew they would be at home this weekend. When the field of 64 teams for the NCAA Baseball Regionals were announced Monday, Bianco, and his players were hoping to be assigned a number on the left side of the school name. Being a national seed, which ensures a super regional if a team wins the regional, wasn't in the cards for the Rebels.

Being really close will have to suffice for Ole Miss, which is set to play Utah Friday night at Oxford-University Stadium. If the Rebels (43-17) are

going to advance, they're going to have play well, and not worry about what they could have been seeded.

“It's hard. There are a lot of different factors in it. I think some of the factors, we were good in as far as RPI,” Bianco said. “Then some other factors probably leaned in some other team's favor. I think the committee did a good job.

I think all of us are proud that the SEC got seven hosts. When you look at the 16 teams they picked to host, they tried to pick the best 16. They didn't try to spread them out, they wanted to reward the teams that had the best seasons. I think they did that with the eight. Unfor-

tunately for us, we were probably really close but not one of the eight. I think we could have been, but now, you can't be disappointed. You go get ready for Friday. You go win your games and you move on.

And that's what we'll do.”

Bianco was planning to learn more about the Utes as the week went on, but he did know they won the Pac-12 title, and that Friday night would be a challenge.

“To play the Pac-12 champion out of the gate, regardless of RPI and record, they're really good.

You don't win that league by chance,” Bianco said.

“Tulane, if I'm not mistaken, won their conference, so you have two

conference champions coming in here and Boston College is from the ACC. And much like we feel with our league, to go through the ACC, week in and week out, you're tournament tested, you're weathered to go through the rigors of that league.

I'm sure like a lot of teams hosting that your regional is going to be really, really strong.”

Ole Miss is hosting for the seventh time in school history. Two years ago, the Rebels won the Oxford Regional and ultimately advanced to the College World Series after winning on the road at LouisianaLafayette. Last season, the Rebels were shipped to play at UCLA and out in

two games.

Junior shortstop Errol Robinson talked about the difference between last year's Rebels, and this year's group.

“I thought we did everything in our power to be a national seed, but things didn't go our way. Now we have to control the things we can control and go out and get some wins,” Robinson said. “It's nice to be here. It was a little difficult going out to L.A. Different setting, different type of baseball out West.

We're comfortable here.

This is our stadium. Our fans. It's really the best opportunity to go out with a bang. We're going to take it pitch by pitch. We have to beat Utah first.”

Two years ago, the Rebels defeated another Pac-12 team, Washington, to win the Oxford Regional. Robinson felt there really was a benefit when playing those type teams at home because of the atmosphere.

“When people come and see our fans and they're getting heckled by the guys out in right right field, with the crowd noise that happens here, that's huge,” Robinson said.

“That's the beauty of home field advantage, having our fans behind us.

No. 2 seed Tulane features strong pitching staff

Runs are something the pitching staff of the Tulane Green Wave don't give up very easily. Of the 39 wins the Green Wave have coming into this weekend's Oxford Regional, 13 have come via shutouts. Of the 43 games Ole Miss has won, only two have been shutouts.

Tulane's team ERA is 3.20 overall, while opposing teams are hitting just .242 against the staff. Emerson Gibbs, a senior right-hander, has the most starts (15) and most innings pitched (103.1) this season. His ERA is 2.44, while Ross Massey leads the Green Wave in wins (9) and ERA 2.40. He is second on the team in innings pitched 82.1.

By comparison, the Rebels' team ERA is 3.47.

Brady Bramlett, the Rebels' top starter, has 77.1 innings pitched and a 3.14 ERA. Teams hit .260 off Ole Miss pitching this season. Ole Miss has 480 strikeouts, Tulane has 466. About the only thing Tulane, the No. 2 seed in the Oxford Re-

I do remember at the time having that group and thinking if we could get them to develop like we want our kids to year in and year out, they already had that foundation. They already had those skills, that know-how-to-win mentality. It's real hard in today's travel ball society where everyone gets a trophy to be able to differentiate between the kid that is going to be special or not, but I knew five years ago that these guys had the ability, and the opportunity to be great. And to do some things that our other groups hadn't been able to do.”

“As a head coach, you sit back and look at those eight in the one column versus the 28 in the other column but what those kids accomplished, it was amazing,” Baughman said.

“More of those eight games in that loss column were on me more than anything they did or didn't do. I'm extremely proud of what they were able to accomplish.”

Dillard led Oxford with 16 home runs, a total that also led the nation, and RBIs (49). He also had the top batting average (.438).

Kessinger hit .310 with three home runs, 15 RBIs and 20 stolen bases in 21 attempts, which was best on the team. He also led the team with 39 runs scored. Bianco was second on the team with six home runs. He also finished with 24 RBIs, and 37 runs. Barber smacked five home runs and hit .333. On the mound, he was 10-2 with a 1.08 ERA. He also had 126 strikeouts in 78 innings of

Perkins finished with 14 RBIs and was almost perfect in fielding this season.

LAFAYETTE Greg Lewis needed more than just one Lafayette player to step up and show improvement during the 2016 season. In his first year back in the dugout, Lewis had to get a couple of good surprises in order for the Commodores to keep moving in the direction he wanted to take them.

Will Cullen provided that biggest positive surprise.

Lewis said he knew that Cullen had a “pretty good glove” and that he had fallen behind some seniors over the past couple of seasons, trying to find a place to contribute. What Lewis didn't know, but found out as the year went on, was

Cullen's ability to hit the ball. Cullen finished with a .373 batting average. He also had a slugging percentage of .475.

“He also did well on the mound for us. He did a lot of things that helped us out a lot,” Lewis said. “Tyler Williams was the other one who stepped up. Defensively, and hitting wise, he came out of nowhere.

Once he got his bat going a little bit, you could tell that he was a guy you wanted up at the plate. He should be one of the leaders out in the field and also with the bat. He is a guy I'm hoping hits in that one through four spot. I would like to get him up there at the top where he can put pressure on people, but it will be hard to do because he has good power.”

Williams felt like he learned a lot from the seniors who are departing and looking forward to 2017 already. The area he improved on the most was at the plate. After some early struggles, he settled in to his role by midseason.

son with a .349 average and 16 RBIs. The area that Williams was most consistent was his defense.

Bishop started the season off hotter at the plate than he did on the mound.

At the end of the season, Bishop was pretty tough to beat on the bump, just like he was as a junior.

“I didn't think he was able to throw. He got sore quick, he just wasn't where he needed throwing,” Lewis said about Bishop, who finished with 51 strikeouts in 47.2 innings pitched, in the early starts.

“I told him at the end of the season that the guys felt like they could win every time he went out there on the mound. All of a sudden, it started happening and you could tell it each time.”

This year's seniors turned out to set the tone for Lewis as he models the program into what he wants to do.

“I felt like the seniors finally figured it out there towards the end and what they were trying to do,” Lewis said. “They got over the errors, the mental part

that was getting some of them. For Will Christian to go up there and bat leadoff, he gave us chances to win games late in the year.”

Bishop, who hit .392, felt like the seniors set the example of what Lewis wants from his teams in the future. Christian said he always wanted to be at Lafayette, and that his move over from Oxford was just right. His addition to the mix turned out to be helpful for the developing Commodores.

“My mom graduated from here and my uncles went here, too. With the team, hard work, it proves itself. You have to play as a team and have good mojo and if everyone gets along, you'll win games,” said Christian, who hit .296 on the year with 11 RBIs and seven stolen bases. “Early on, there were errors here and there and tempers flaring. No. 3 seed BC Eagles making first trip to Oxford

Boston College hasn't visited Oxford to play the Ole Miss Rebels before. The Eagles are in the NCAA Baseball Regionals for the first time since 2009, and just the 11th time in school history. BC (3120) made its last trip to the NCAAs a memorable one, even in a loss. The Eagles played Texas to 25 innings in 2009, a contest they lost 3-2.

Boston College is 19-21 alltime in the NCAAs, and have advanced to the College World Series four times, the most recent time coming in 1967. Boston College won 10 of its final 15 regular season games before losing to Georgia Tech in the ACC Tournament. BC has won 20 games on the road, and played 32 games away from home in 2016.

The Eagles have an ERA of 3.65, while teams are hitting .250 against the staff this season. Mike King (7-4)is the most experienced pitcher on the staff. His 3.07 ERA is the

second best in school history through his junior season. He has 56 strikeouts in 91.1 innings pitched, and one complete game under his belt this year. Justin Dunn, who is 3-1 with a 1.35 ERA, has 55 strikeouts in 53.1 innings, while Jacob Stevens has a 2.04 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched.

Boston College is hitting .266 coming into the regional.

Michael Strem is leading the offense with a .306 average.

Joe Cronin is the top run producer with 34 RBIs, while Jake Palomaki leads the Eagles with 43 runs scored.

Boston College defeated Big Ten Tournament champion Ohio State early in the season and has series wins over N.C. State, which is hosting a regional, Virginia, which is the defending national champion and also hosting, as well as Louisville, which is the No. 2 national seed. The Eagles won their last four ACC series, and won six overall.

Utah Utes seem better than a normal No. 4 seed

Don't judge the Utah Utes on their record, or their lack of experience in the NCAA Baseball Regionals. The Utes may be 25-27, but they earned the Pac-12's automatic bid to the regionals by winning their first Pac-12 Championship since joining the league four seasons ago.

Utah is making its second NCAA appearance since 1960. The Utes last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2009 after winning the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Utah went 2-2 in the Fullerton regional that year, defeating Gonzaga and Georgia Southern.

Utah has the top batting average of all the teams in the Oxford Regional at .281 and the most wins (19) in league play of all the teams.

The Utes also have one of the school's best pitchers in sophomore Jayson Rose. In his last start, Rose set the single-season strikeout mark with 102, a number that hadn't been touched since 2004. Rose is 8-5 with a 2.62 ERA. He's made 15 starts and has one complete game. Teams are only hitting .206 against him this season. Dylan Drachler leads the team with eight saves, while Josh Lapiana is

second on the team in innings pitched 92.2. He is 4-5 with a 4.18 ERA. DaShawn Keirsey is the reigning Pac12 Player of the Week. He went 7-for-15 against Washington in the final series of the season, the one that clinched the overall title for the Utes. He is tied for sixth in the Pac-12 with 11 stolen bases. He enters regional play hitting .312 with nine doubles and 28 runs scored.

Third baseman Dallas Carroll, who hits third in the lineup, and Cody Scaggari, who hits just ahead in the lineup, have both had strong seasons at the plate.

Scaggari is hitting .328 with four home runs and 32 RBIs, while Carroll is hitting .316 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs. Kellen Marruffo is the other regular who is hitting over .300 for the Utes, and he is second on the team with 10 doubles.

After losing 11 of its first 14 games, Utah has come on and played consistent baseball, winning the first three Pac-12 series of the season, which included a sweep of Arizona. In the last 13 games of the season, the Utes won nine and scored 21 runs in the season finale with Washington.

Hollis key in Jones JC wins Former Lafayette standout T.J. Hollis was recently named the MACJC and NJCAA Pitcher of the Week for helping lead Jones to wins in the Region 23 Tournament. Hollis pitched in the Bobcats' 12-2 win over East Central.

season, the sophomore logged eight innings of work, allowing just one unearned run and five hits while striking out seven. Hollis had only pitched 7.1 innings coming into the contest. He was 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA as Jones advanced to play in the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Oklahoma. The Bobcats defeated McHenry County 13-6 in the opener before losing to GateWay in Arizona 11-9 in the second game. Jones remained alive on Tuesday with an 11-3 win over Brunswick (Ga.). Hollis pitched an inning in that contest, getting three outs on 14 pitches.

Making a Difference McArthur's arm has been key to Rebels' success

If James McArthur has learned nothing else during his first season in Oxford and playing for the Ole Miss Rebels it's that overcoming adversity can only happen by staying focused, remaining positive and always moving forward.

The freshman from New Braunfels, Texas pitched well in the fall only to be sidetracked by a Jones fracture, which involves the fifth metatarsal located on the outside of the foot.

McArthur, happy that his first set of finals were over, slipped on the stairs heading to eat this past December. He felt a pop, and when he couldn't walk more than few steps, he knew that something was wrong.

“The foot injury, the whole thing was unfortunate. I came back after that and I started to get back in my routine, doing rehab with (trainer) Josh Porter,” said McArthur, who was out about 10 weeks. “Once I got back on the mound, it just started to come back to me from the fall season. I started to command my fastball better and put myself in better situations.

From there it just kept on growing to where I am right now.”

There wasn't an exact time that McArthur felt he was all the way back. When he stepped on the mound again, he was healthy, or his foot didn't bother him.

Everything revolved around him getting comfortable and getting back into a groove. He's definitely had some high points, like being named SEC Freshman of the Week after the Auburn series.

“I've done well when things have gone bad. I've been able to put things behind me and keep moving forward. That's really important, especially if you're a pitcher,” said McArthur, who is 6-1 with a 4.26 ERA this season. “Putting yourself in bad counts and being able to work out of them. The foot thing was

I'm happy how it's worked out so far.”

Recruiting was a roller coaster ride, McArthur said.

Pitching coach Carl Lafferty almost crossed him off the list when he thought that McArthur was another pitcher.

“I went to Jupiter (Florida) and I was fortunate enough to have a good outing there and Coach Lafferty was fortunately there,” McArthur said.

“They messed up the roster

and had the wrong number for me and he watched some other guy and then he realized that it wasn't actually me and came to see me the next day. It was just crazy how it worked out. I took a visit to Baylor the week before I came to visit here and some junior colleges were talking to me.”

Lafferty said McArthur is in Oxford because the team needed another arm on the roster, plain and simple.

After making a few calls to travel team coaches in

Texas, Lafferty was headed to Jupiter to scout McArthur.

“We spoke on the phone just before that tournament. It was his senior year and he knew that I was going to see him pitch,” Lafferty said. “His velocity had increased from the summer to the fall and he was terrific. It was one of those games that I stayed until the very end, like 10 o'clock at night. It was just me and a few other guys there. We were on him, we had him in on a visit and

two weeks later, he was a Rebel.”

It's tough for even the most talented freshmen to have success in the SEC. Lafferty said people look back and talk about Lance Lynn or Drew Pomeranz and how they pitched on the weekend.

“If you go back and look at their freshmen numbers, they were just OK. Now, you're talking about two guys that are pitching in the big leagues and pitching well,” Lafferty said. “James has pitched on the week-

end for a team that's now hosting a regional. To say that we're pleased with James, I think, is an understatement. I think over the next couple of years, he's going to continue to grow and continue to get better and I think he can be one of those elite arms in our league.”

Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said of all the newcomers on the mound, McArthur first started to separate in the fall, right out of the gate.

“He never seemed to make it any bigger than what it is. He always seemed confident and he wanted to learn. He's a very smart kid. When you talk to him, you can see in his eyes that he's getting it,” Bianco said. “He's a hard worker and he's very mature. We felt he would be in the starting rotation at some point, we just didn't know when that would be. To be honest, I had to remind myself in the early part of the season when he didn't enjoy some of the success that we thought he would, especially in the midweek, that he was a couple of weeks behind everybody.

Then it seemed like he got in shape, got some confidence back and he got on a roll there for how many weeks in a row where he was really dominant.”

After giving the Rebels a chance to win during the week, Bianco went to McArthur when the team needed a boost on the weekend.

“I think he was able to fulfill that for us for a few weeks but I think he hit another bump in the road,” Bianco said. “He's certainly one of the most talented arms we've got. He's got so much bigger and brighter days in front of him. For him not have started since the Georgia series and to go out at the SEC Tournament on Day 3 and pitch against a very good Vandy team, with a lot of pressure on you, it shows what he is made out of.” john.davis@journalinc.com Twitter: @oxfordcitizenjd

and after a couple of games on television, we've probably added 25 kids of camp registration. Recruiting e-mails have picked up. Junior college transfers are wanting to come in. I think it's really going to help in recruiting.

“The one thing that these recruits have done, when they came on an official or unofficial visit, is we don't have a history or anything to stand on. We have a blueprint and we're trying to create something and they've had to trust in what we have done in our careers,” Smith said.

“They've had to use that to decide if they wanted to be a part of Ole Miss where after this year, we've created some history. We've made a couple copies of the blueprint and we've started to put up the walls and some other things in these rooms.”

Ole Miss is starting to build the program, and create legacy, which is something that hasn't happened before. Smith

felt all of that would help them compete against the bigger, more well known programs across the country from a recruiting standpoint.

“It's been hard for somebody that is going to Florida, Alabama or Tennessee for a visit and they come to us and they see how much more resources and more history in those programs,” Smith said.

“They want a better shot at winning a College World Series as opposed to Ole Miss because we're a what if. We're not something that has proven we can get there. We have started to, in a short amount of time, so we're hoping that this year will help take our words of truth, and what we're building here, the something special we're trying to build here, and they will take it and get on board and be a part of this program in the future.”

There was no rest for the weary. Smith and his staff are out recruiting. They have already secured players for the 2016, 2017 and 2018 teams. He was actually about to be wrapped up with the 2019 class

from a verbal commitment standpoint. So when Smith is out at tournaments this summer, he is looking for players in the 2020 class.

“We have a long list of players to go out and evaluate and then start making decisions on what we want to do with these young kids,” Smith said adding that Osias was the biggest loss from this year's roster.

“Losing Madi in the circle, because she is a 20-plus game winner, knowing that we have Alyssa Clayton coming back from an injury, is huge. I think Elisha Jahnke, with another year with Taryne (Mowatt), she is going to make a difference. We also have a transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coast signed and coming in. I think she will win games for us. We've got a good one coming in from Virginia and couple of kids from Texas.
