he concept of minimalism has been around for a long time, but still seems daunting to most; so daunting, in fact, that the opposite of this trend has started working its grassroots, maximalism. These two concepts, completely night and day to each other, have a tug of war among home decorators. Minimalism may look appealing to you, but maybe you have too many things, bumping you over to the maximalism column. But minimalism is still an attainable feat. The first thing to know about minimalism, particularly minimalism in the South, is that you can still have items and knickknacks of sentimental value, purpose, etc., without “breaking the rules.” A minimalist bedroom doesn’t have to solely be a bed with two pillows and a single nightstand. Hang the art on the wall, buy the curtains, indulge in pillows, keep the plants, put the pottery on the nightstand and don’t be too shy toward colors and patterns. “But I love all of my things?” Who doesn’t? Minimalism doesn’t require you to throw out all your belongings, just to get rid of all that clutter. Pare down on multiples of items that you know you’ll never need more than one of. For example, vases take up a lot of space, so just stick with a favorite. Then

there’s the obvious tidying: throw out those coupons you tell yourself you’ll probably use (but you know you won’t) stacked on your desk. A good idea to keep in mind when decluttering: If it’s out of my sight, will I forget it exists? If the answer is yes, you’ll likely never use it; and if you do, it will be on such a rare occasion that it probably isn’t worth taking up the space. Now that you’ve purged your living space of unnecessary stuff, it’s important to know that organization is minimalism’s best friend. Tackle that towel closet once and for all, and leave yourself an extra shelf. Things you won’t use every day (or things that look too clunky), but are still needed throughout the week, can go here. It’s important to know that this space isn’t the equivalent of a new junk drawer. You don’t have to hide away items that make you happy: if a small stack of coffee-table books brings joy to your inner bibliophile, by all means, make space for the things that are important to you. Minimalism doesn’t have to be an unattainable goal; it can be as clean and straightedged as you’d like, or a little more relaxed and forgiving, allowing space for those special items. Design is all about bending trends to make it work for your life, your style and your space.
