Editor’s Letter

You may remember me writing about becoming a first-time homeowner in last year’s issue as I was still in the early stages of making the house I bought my home. It’s definitely still a process, but I’ve grown to appreciate its age and the hiccups it brings as well as the mere fact that it is shelter from the storm both literally and figuratively. Is there anything better than finding rest in your space at the end of a long day? I’m still gradually tweaking the interior as time and money allow, but I’m most excited about focusing more on the exterior as the temps increase. Shelly Hickox is #goals for my exterior dreams (pg.29). I’m hoping my green thumbs get greener with age and practice. I’m hopeful since I’ve successfully rooted an ivy cutting this month. Gardening really is a work of art. It isn’t as simple as plopping something in the ground. I’m learning about the soils in my yard and the amount of sun each corner receives throughout the day. I didn’t get around to planting any veggies last year, but after we made the salad recipes on page 13 with ingredients from the garden, I’m on a mission. Another backyard venture I’m throwing around is chickens. Did you know you can have chickens in Tupelo city limits? I can’t decide if they are worth the hassle or if my cat would play nice, but my friend JB Clark is in the throes of raising chickens and he let us in on the adventure (pg. 63). If you’re not really into gardening or raising chickens, read about Brian Hubbard and how he takes ordinary objects and transforms them into light fixtures (pg. 47). Or check out our nod to the renovation craze all over HGTV with a local who takes on “fixer uppers” right here in Tupelo (pg.56). However you decide to spend your warmer days, I hope you spend them well and try something new. Let’s welcome spring, y’all.

If you have any thoughts about this issue, please email me at editor@mudandmag.com.

Mid-century modern refers to the architectural and design movement of the mid-20th century. Many contribute this style to the post World War II era where new technologies in steel and plywood production made possible an explosion of home building in urban and suburban areas. Further, many of the founding fathers of midcentury modern design and architecture fled Germany during and after WWII, bringing with them new ideas for furniture development and mass production technology. Furniture that was previously handcrafted was replaced with mass-produced pieces to satisfy the demand of homeowners. Additional developments in product technology made the use of nontraditional materials possible as well. Plastics, plexiglass, lucite, metal and glass were used alongside traditional materials like wood, leather and cotton textiles to create a new design movement that many of us still love and appreciate today. Mid-century modern design is characterized by simple and organic lines. Architecturally, mid-century modern homes are known for open floor plans, expansive glass walls, flat rooflines and unobstructed views of the outdoors from almost every room. Indoor/outdoor living was introduced and encouraged to promote a healthy lifestyle for the homeowners. It makes sense, then, that the interior design elements of mid-century modern style should highlight the home’s architecture through the use of simple and minimalistic furniture and accessories. Furniture designers during this period coined the phrase “form follows function” because functionality without unnecessary frills was paramount. Furniture was designed to be long and low on thin, sleek legs to further accentuate and not obstruct the outdoor views. The lines of the furniture are clean and understated with minimal

fuss. Hard, straight lines on sofas and tables are softened with round, organic accent pieces. Window treatments, if used at all, are simple and unadorned, used mainly to add softness, texture and warmth to a room without obstructing the outdoor views. Decorative accessories are used sparingly and the negative space within a room is celebrated. Commonly, the color palette of a mid-century modern home is neutral - white walls; cream, gray, brown or white fabrics on the furnishings; and teak or walnut wood furniture . Bold pops of color and geometrics are used in accessory pieces, wall art, pillows, light fixtures and lamps. Accent furniture pieces are often colorful as well - think molded plastic tables or chairs in orange, red, blue or yellow on thin chrome legs. Divine! One of the best features of midcentury modern design is that you can seamlessly incorporate aspects of it into nearly any decor style. Small changes can create big impact if done correctly. By understanding the distinguishing characteristics of mid-century modern design, you can start slowly and incorporate a few elements at a time. For example, decluttering and pairing down decorative accessories to only those pieces with meaning and interest is cost free and can be done quickly. Neutralize wall colors and add pillows and/or large pieces of abstract wall art with bold colors and textures. Bring the outdoors in by removing those heavy wooden blinds and installing simple window coverings that can be opened and closed. Better yet, if privacy isn’t an issue, leave the windows open and unobstructed to take advantage of the natural light. Replace that large, overstuffed, bulky recliner with a sleek Eames lounge and ottoman. I realize this last suggestion may be a life-altering decision that requires prayer and marriage counseling, but the beauty and comfort of an Eames is so worth it! M

1. Tell us a little about your home and garden. We bought our house 15 years ago, mostly because we fell in love with the land - the house was a wreck! It was built in 1973 and had been poorly remodeled over the years and was in pretty sad condition, so we had our work cut out for us. My husband and I have always loved fixer uppers, so we knew we could turn this derelict house into something special. It’s taken a long time, but we’re nearly there! Nearly every room was stripped down to the studs and rebuilt, and we’ve added a couple of rooms to make it more functional for us. The garden really didn’t exist until a couple years ago! Unfortunately, we didn’t inherit much from the previous owners other than a few scruffy shrubs, so we had to start from scratch. I love the look of a cottage garden, so I have a mix of flowering shrubs, plus bulbs, roses and perennials to give color all year long. I also like adding annuals in pots for added interest and texture.

2. When did you become interested in gardening? I started gardening about 25 years ago, when I quit work to stay home with my kids. After we bought this house, there was so much to do inside (and the outside was so overwhelming) that I put any interest in gardening on the back burner until I had time to dedicate to it. A few years ago we added a new porch and it inspired me to pick up my trowel and start planting again.

3. How do you choose what to plant? There really isn’t much rhyme or reason to my garden planting. With so much area to landscape, a lot of times it’s about filling holes with what I can find on the clearance table at the garden center! I like to start with shrubs and small trees to give structure to the spaces, and then fill in with lots of perennials and bulbs. I think it’s important to have something blooming continually so there is always something to look forward to. And never underestimate the power of annuals to fill in when perennials peter out.

Shelly Hickox

4. Do you have a favorite area of your home or land? The sunroom and pergola/patio are probably my favorite spaces. The sunroom sits where there was originally a decrepit covered patio. We pulled that down, then poured a slab and built a brand new structure. I wanted it to feel very bright and cottage-y, so there are lots of windows and a high ceiling covered with beadboard. It’s a great place to curl up with a cup of tea and read all afternoon, or hang out with friends and catch up. The pergola is one of our most recent projects and is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day and watch the chickens roam around.

5. Keeping up a home is hard work. Do you dedicate time each day to caring for your plants? I don’t really have a set routine, but I usually start my morning with a cup of coffee out in the garden, looking at what needs pruning or weeding. I try to get any hard work done when it’s cooler - especially in the summer. If it’s hot, I’ll usually make my rounds again in the late afternoon and water anything that looks like it needs it, or deadhead spent flowers. mudandmag.com

6. Do you have a favorite flowering plant? Oh, that’s such a hard question - it’s like trying to pick a favorite child! If I had to choose one, I’d probably say daffodils. They always herald the coming of spring after a gloomy winter and they remind me of my great-grandmother, who I loved dearly. She had masses of them growing in her garden and I use to pick them by the armload as a child.

7. We’ve come to think of you as the Martha Stewart of Desoto County. Tell us about your other hobbies. What a sweet compliment! One of my other passions is papercrafting and rubber stamping. I’ve designed for many of the top names in the business and have had my work published. I have a blog dedicated to my creative endeavors and love sharing with my followers. Baking is something of a new hobby for me. Last year I became obsessed with a PBS baking show and have been challenging myself to create recipes from it. Of all my hobbies, that’s probably my husband’s favorite! M 32

T

wo years ago, Mark and Kathy Novotny purchased the historic Temple Heights in Columbus, Miss., making them the sixth owners of the home built in 1837. “We just love history,” Kathy said. The home’s storied past begins with General Richard T. Brownrigg, a North Carolina transplant from a prominent family. He was a land speculator, ferry service owner and mayor of what was then called West Port. The Brownrigg family owned a plantation across the river, but driving into town in the cakey Mississippi mud was an arduous task. In an effort to make his wife more comfortable, General Brownrigg built the townhouse to look identical to her childhood home in North Carolina, which the Novotnys were able to visit. Portraits of Mrs. Brownrigg’s parents still hang in Temple Heights. Her mother had the honor of signing the statement of protest now known as the Edenton Tea Party. “We are extremely lucky that we are only the sixth owners of this house,” Kathy said. “Every person who has lived in this house has served either their country, their state, their community or humanity in some major way. They have made their mark.” The second owners were the Harrises, whose patriarch was

involved in national politics and was an attorney for Native Americans. During their time at Temple Heights, they turned the house to face the direction it now faces and added the porches and columns, making it a Greek Revival home on the exterior. From there, the home changed hands a few times, each family leaving behind some small indication of their stay. The daughter of Jane Fontaine — prior owner and what Kathy calls a “Declaration lady” — was so excited by her engagement that she carved her name into a front window with her diamond. The most recent owners, the Butlers, kept the house from being demolished and lived in it for more than 50 years. Kathy credits them with saving the home and restoring it to its former glory. The home is rumored to be haunted by previous residents, but Kathy believes instead that it is “spirit-filled” — that the presence of these families continues to welcome guests. “When people walk in this house, the first thing they say is how comfortable it feels. I believe maybe the presence of those who lived here before carries on. Everyone who lived here loved this house so much that they stayed a long time,” Kathy said. The three-bedroom home is 3,800 sq. ft. and four stories tall.

Slave quarters The property is actually home to three antebellum properties as the original outdoor kitchen and slave quarters still stand. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places and one of only two Mississippi state landmarks in Lowndes County. “Our job is to preserve,” Kathy said. Since moving in, the Novotnys have made updates to the porch and implemented central heating and air. One of their next projects will be structural repairs to the slave quarters so that they can be toured. “We consider those who lived in the slave quarters people who lived here,” Kathy said. “This year, we are going to be telling stories of how they got here and what they did. We look forward to people being able to go inside to see how tight it was for ten people to live.” When the Novotnys purchased the home, most of the furnishings came with it. The period furniture tells the story of the home’s life and residents. It is colorful and inviting. The

Novotnys “live like the Victorians,” with a more casual space dedicated to cooking, eating and relaxing both indoors and outdoors. As the owners of Temple Heights, the Novotnys count it their duty and privilege to share their home with the community. Temple Heights is a stop on the annual Columbus Pilgrimage home tour. This year’s tours will run each day from April 5 – 14. “We live here for us, but we open it up as a community service,” Kathy said. “Tourism is extremely important to Columbus, and we want to do our part, but this is our house before anything else. It’s very comfortable to live in. It’s a fabulous house.” The Novotnys hope to carry on the lasting legacy of former Temple Heights owners — a tradition of community service and creating a home that is welcoming to all. M

rian Hubbard of Tupelo loves to tinker with things and find ways to give new life to items forsaken or forgotten by history. His current artistic outlet is taking everyday items from the past and repurposing them as lamps. Whether it’s an old film camera, a lantern, a rotary dial phone, a fan, a heater or a film projector, he’s up to the task. “I look at it and say, ‘Can I do it?’” Hubbard said. “It went together so it’s got to come apart. If it breaks, it breaks and I’ll start over and try something else. “If you have a creative mind, let it go. The only thing that can stop you is you ... or the bank.” And it is not just a matter of sticking a bulb on top of phone and calling it a day. Hubbard takes painstaking care to hide his work. He takes everything apart so that cords, switches and bulb sockets are concealed within the piece. The coiled phone cords hide metal tubing that is bent by hand. One point of pride is the on-off switch. For phones, the existing handset cradle activates a push button switch hidden inside. For cameras, the film advance knob is connected to a rotary switch. For camp-style lanterns, the switch is the fuel tank cap. While the work can be tedious and time-consuming, he enjoys the challenge. “Tinkering is something I’ve always done,” Hubbard said. “My father started me in the ‘80s with snap-together car models. “Modern things are not designed for the average guy to work

on them. People miss being able to take apart things and put them back together. That’s why I like old stuff. Things aren’t built like they used to be. They are more complicated than they need to be.” During the week, Hubbard works at DeCa Autosound in Verona trying to figure out how to take apart modern cars to try to conceal audio equipment. So on the weekends, the 38-yearold husband and father likes to unwind, tinkering in a shed behind the house. “My shop is my little piece of heaven,” Hubbard said. “It gets me in the right mindset.” It was a fluke that Hubbard started building lamps. A friend gave him an old green rotary phone and asked him what he was going to do with it. He laughingly replied he would make it into a lamp. And thus a side business was born. “I have sold several,” Hubbard said. “Usually it’s friends or the family of friends. All I have to do is post it on Instagram and it’s gone.” But in a world of smartphones that have built-in cameras, where can you find rotary phones - which were phased out in the 1980s - or a film camera that met the same fate about 20 years later? He finds stuff on eBay, antique stores and thrift stores. He also has friends who will see things, text a picture to Hubbard to see if he wants it. When Hubbard does get a new piece, he doesn’t polish or dress it up too much. He prefers the patina that only comes with age.

“I try to keep things old and rusty looking,” Hubbard said. “I like the old stuff. It tells a story. “And I even learned some things. Some of the old ITT (International Telephone and Telegraph) phones were built at a plant in Corinth in the ‘60s and ‘70s.” The key component of any lamp is the light bulb. There are thousands of styles, types and wattages to choose from. He has to decide if the lamp will be used as a light source (with a standard bulb and lampshade) or will it be more of an artistic piece. For the latter, he can be more creative in choosing a bulb shape and size. Sometimes the bulbs choose the project. Other times, he sees a piece and instantly knows what kind of bulb it needs. That was the case when he found a wire wall hanging in the shape of a small guitar. In his mind, he knew it needed two long slender bulbs — one in the neck and one in the body. “There are some crazy bulbs out there,” Hubbard said. “There are all kinds of Edison bulbs (clear with visible filaments). I have one that looks like a gem stone. “Ones like that, you can’t just go to a local store and pick up one. I have to go to the internet for most of them. I even have one that’s 26 inches around (the size of a volleyball) that I will use on a brass coat rack I am turning into a lamp for my wife.” So what is on the horizon for Hubbard. He’s got several projects on tap. He found an old marching French horn that he is contemplating. And he is trying to figure out how to make a lamp out of a vase. On the ambitious side, he plans on adding light bulbs to the blades of an old metal desk fan. In addition to lighting up, the blades and bulbs will rotate around 25 times a minute. “I already know how I’ll do it. It’s just a matter of getting time to sit down and start.” For more of Hubbard’s design, visit his Instagram page, @briansbriteideas. M

A mood board May created for a girl’s bedroom with pinks and purples, at right

Neil May

eil May got his degree from the University of Mississippi in homeland security and for four years, he owned a clothing boutique, but home design has always been his passion. “I’ve always had an eye for design,” said May, 32. “Whether I could afford a look I saw or something close to it, I knew that’s what I wanted.” In the fall of 2016, May put his natural talent to work and began buying old houses and transforming them into showplaces, a term called flipping. “The first house we acquired was on Madison,” he said. “We wanted to make it nice for the neighborhood’s sake. I went to the house one time, made an offer and didn’t go back until after I’d bought it.” When May got into the home, he realized walls needed to be moved, sagging joists had to be replaced and the roof was shot. “It was a full overhaul,” he said. “We jumped in feet-first –

we didn’t start with a small one.” May and his team, which includes a demolition guy, a tile guy and a construction guy and his crew, spent three months renovating the home. He sold it a month later. “I’ve done eight houses since that one,” he said. “Every house I’ve flipped has been within a two-mile radius or less, although I’m not opposed to working in any neighborhood.” In addition to the house on Madison, he’s redone one on Foxmoor, one on Magnolia, four in the Joyner neighborhood and two in the West Jackson Street revitalization area. “I become attached to these houses,” said May, who shares four children with his wife, Stephanie. “You put your heart in them. You feel like you can see yourself living there.” May does all the design work for his business, Mays Proper, deciding when walls should be moved or doors added or when rooms need to be totally repurposed. He chooses the paint colors, countertops and backsplash, hardware, finishes,

appliances and lighting. “People think it’s so easy to flip houses and then they get into it and realize it’s a lot of work,” he said. May generally goes with a neutral palette on the inside and outside of the home, and he’s never had a buyer ask him to change any colors. “I don’t stage the home’s interior with furniture and accessories,” he said. “I might come in and throw in a few books or a mirror or some artwork. In the kitchen, we might put out a marble cutting board with a bottle of olive oil on it. But I try to keep them as empty as possible.” May has also found success redoing individual rooms in clients’ homes, whether it’s a kitchen, bathroom, family room or bedroom. “The client contacts me and we talk about their preferences, their budget, their style,” he said. “Then I go home and get to work on my iPad and design a mood board.” The mood board is a sampling of what is going into a specific space. It shows the paint colors, flooring, window treatments, lighting, trim and furnishings. “Everything I do is tailored to the person,” he said. “And I try to do something special at each house.” When May was flipping the home on Fletcher in the Joyner neighborhood, the sidewalk leading to the front of the house was busted at one end. May happened to be taking the brick pavers out of his driveway in Highland Circle at the time, so he moved them to Fletcher and made a new walkway there. “Now, those bricks from historic Highland Circle are in the historic Joyner neighborhood,” he said. “I’m just trying to make properties more beautiful in the city. If you think what you have is a onebedroom shack, I guarantee you that onebedroom shack can be amazing.” When deciding whether to buy an old home to flip, May first looks at the neighborhood, to make sure it’s stable. Then he looks at what comparable homes have sold for recently to make sure he can do the renovations needed and still make a profit. “But it’s not really a money thing,” he said. “I keep my price range affordable for first-time homebuyers. I want people to love the house as much as I did when I finished it.” To see some of Mays’ work, go to maysproper.com or find him on Instagram. M

oving four very young birds and one mean old hen into my small downtown backyard was just what I needed to get the final punch in my pseudo-rural hipster card. It also transformed my muddy little backyard into a pastoral patch of paradise. When people ask if I’ve tried meditating, I respond, “Not really, but I have chickens.” You see, chickens are a contemplative practice. Their worrisome sounds and clucks all blend together in a low din of farmyard white noise. They help with your gardening and follow you around your yard like little poultry apostles. They even eat your food waste and pay rent in the form of tasty eggs. All they require in return is a willing ear to hear all of their complaints (Chickens have lots of complaints. I’m sure I would too if I produced an egg daily.) and willing hands to carry out five minutes of daily tending. A cup of water. A cup of food. Put them away for the night. They provide the benefits of a daily meditative practice without having to sit still for 15 minutes. But like the nagging little red reminder on my meditation app, I still put it off at all costs. It’s such a lame procrastination, too, since chickens put themselves to bed every day at sunset without fail. They’re scared of the dark — and they should be — because everything can kill a chicken. When the sun sets, chickens want to be under a roof and a few feet off the ground, so they flock to the coop. All I have to do is close the door. On my best days, our little flock of five — “the ladies,” as

we call them — are part of my daily unwinding routine. After work, I feed them and fill their water bowl before collecting their rent. Usually the oldest of the group, a beautiful barred rock named Mother Clucker (she really is a mean and opinionated mother clucker), meets me at the back door with her daily list of complaints. She serves as a mediator between the flock and me. During the winter, the sun sets before I get off work, and I return home to find them already cooped up. As the days get longer, though, I’m finding it harder and harder to remember to go back out and close the door to their coop after putting my son to bed. Just this morning I woke to a very opinionated cluck outside my window, which let me know I forgot to close the coop door last night. And it’s not like you can round up chickens or herd them into the coop. They’re too flighty and wily for that. When they’re out, they’re out until the night. This will become a problem for me at 11 a.m. when my dog, Dixie, wakes my wife from her slumber (she’s a night shift labor and delivery nurse who sleeps during the day). She will, with her eyes still closed, let Dixie out into the backyard where all manner of commotion will pull her fully from her sleepwalking into a full panic. I’ve already texted her a warning, but we know she’s not going to check her phone before then. She’ll call me and talk faster than I can understand, but I’ll know exactly what she’s saying: “You didn’t put the chickens up, doofus.” M

Rattan: This material has been around for ages, but was really popular in the home in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Now it’s back and you can spot it in everything from chairs to light fixtures.

Two-tone cabinets: Painting the bottom cabinets is a great way to incorporate color into a kitchen that needs some life to it. This is a trend that may seem a little risky, but it comes with a great pay-off.

Tay Morgan By Arden Spearman

B

ased in Ridgeland, Mississippi, Tay Morgan is a Southern artist with a passion for painting. Morgan creates many canvas pieces, paper goods and hand-painted Easter eggs. She does all of her work out of a spare bedroom in her home that her husband turned into a personal studio. Morgan’s work is tedious, but, she explains, it is simply what she loves to do. In describing her start in art, Morgan always mentions that her grandmother was an immense influence. “She was always painting a canvas or a piece of furniture, sewing or creating beautiful Christmas ornaments,” Morgan said. With that as inspiration, she began taking

after-school art classes in elementary school. She continued painting throughout her childhood and went on to graduate from the University of Mississippi with a degree in art. Today, Morgan describes herself as fortunate for being able to do what she loves. She has become a popular artist in the state and sells her art nationwide. Along with creating art, she also loves to help others develop their creative side. A large part of Morgan’s life is devoted to helping her local community through art, and she does this by volunteering with her local Stewpot in Jackson, Mississippi. Stewpot provides the homeless population warm meals and many other services including HeARTworks, in which Morgan has mudandmag.com

invested much of her time in. HeARTworks invites those less fortunate in the area to create art with the help of volunteer artists like Morgan. Their art can be sold at yearly art shows to raise money for Stewpot and the artists’ personal expenses. Morgan’s heart can be seen throughout every piece she designs, and many of her customers agree. Morgan loves to use her artistic skills to paint products that are available for sale in many stores throughout Mississippi, including About The South gift shop located in Tupelo. Her business, Tay Morgan Designs, also offers the products on her website, along with her signature hand-painted Easter eggs. In just one season, Morgan creates an 78

estimated 900 eggs, painting them in batches. Her process starts by painting one of her many available designs onto a solid wooden egg, then sealing everything with a top-coat and finally wrapping each in a decorative bag. Many of her eggs that are available for order have classic Easter depictions, but other designs range from baby or engagement announcements to paintings of collegiate icons. Many of her customers request custom orders, and Morgan brings their ideas to life as well as her own. “I love to paint my eggs and hear the stories my customers tell me,” said Morgan. “None of this is ever a chore.” M
