2013 BUSINESS WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Alford enjoying good year at helm of her hotel By LISA MONTI It’s been a good year for Mende Malouf Alford, Mississippi Business Journal’s 2013 Businesswoman of the Year. From the helm of the Old Capitol Inn Boutique Hotel in Jackson, which she owns and manages, Alford sees signs that the economy is starting to move in a positive direction. “We’ve been very fortunate,” she said. “ For the past two and a half to three years, we’ve managed to still really do well,” she said. The recession was particularly hard on the hospitality industry, causing companies to hold off on travel and entertainment expenses. Alford dug in to meet the challenge. “We did lose a lot of business but we managed to buckle down and watch expenses and we didn’t have to let anybody go,” she said. “I wanted to work smarter, not harder.” Now, she said, reservations for Christmas parties are picking up and business travelers are on the move again. “From what I have been seeing, business is on the rise,” she said. “This will be a really nice year for us. Companies are starting to book more parties again, and we’re getting a lot more business travelers to stay. Things have really begun to pick up.” Alford tends to give a nod to good fortune when she talks about the success she’s had in her business, but hard work and her hands-on management style play a big part as well. To begin with, she was a social work major from Ole Miss in a family of lawyers. “That’s not my per-

2013 BUSINESS WOMAN OF THE YEAR sonality,” she said of a law career. “I was more geared for greeting and entertaining.” It was her father who got the hotel project going to begin with. “I felt I couldn’t pass it up,” she said. “I’m very fortunate my dad was able to allow me to do this.” After 16 years of running the hotel, it’s hard to imagine that Alford had never worked at a hotel before her own. Her instinct and talent have made the hotel a favorite of brides, business travelers, meeting planners and guests from all over the world. It has garnered honors from industry groups and has caught the attention of travel writers and regional publications such as Southern Living, which has featured it three times, so far. One sure sign of a hotel’s staying power is the return guest factor, and Alford sees them year after year. One guest has been returning for a decade. “We have a great clientele and we really get to know the guests. It’s encouraging (when they return) and I feel I’m doing something right.” The interest from international guests was a surprise for Alford. “We’ve had people from all over the world,” she said. “People are so intrigued by the South. It’s amazing the amount people we get from overseas.” Operating a hotel is a nonstop job and

whether her workday lasts four hours or 15, Alford said “it doesn’t feel like it’s work. When you love what you do it’s very enjoyable.” Alford said when would-be innkeepers and others come to her for advice on starting a business, passion and commitment top the checklist. “Certainly you must be passionate about what you’re doing. For this industry or for any industry you have got to be passionate and really believe

and Jackson. The more things we build and do downtown, the stronger it is for everyone.” As to her future, Alford said, “I’m not going anywhere. I hope 30 years from now I’m doing the same thing.” And if one of her three young daughters showed an interest in taking over the hotel in the future, that’s fine with Alford, too. “I would certainly want them to follow their

Alford is a big believer in the city and its future and calls Jackson “a strong, vibrant city.” “I am so many passionate about downtown

own dreams but if one wanted to do it, I would just be tickled to death.” Alford said she’s still overwhelmed when she thinks about being picked as the state’s top businesswoman. “It is just such an honor for me and it has been really very humbling. I am just tickled.”

At Eubank Betts, White is responsible for implementing marketing strategies, maintaining the company’s public relations, and seminar and workshop development. Prior to joining the firm, the Prentiss native served as marketing director for Ovations Hair Studio. Outside the office, White is dedicated to her volunteer work with the Mississippi Burn Foundation, which named her “Volunteer of the Year” in 2012. A voracious reader, White enjoys curling up with her Kindle and will stay awake until she’s finished a favorite book.
