In the 1950s and ’60s, segregationist whites waved Confederate ﬂags and slapped deﬁant bumper stickers on cars declaring Mississippi “the most lied about state in the Union.” Those were ways of making a dig against African-Americans who dared challenge racial oppression, and journalists covering

the civil rights movement. Decades later, as Mississippi marks its bicentennial, the state is getting an unﬂinching look at its own complex and often brutal past in two history museums, complete with displays of slave chains, Ku Klux Klan robes and graphic photos of lynchings and ﬁrebombings. The Museum of Mississippi History takes a 15,000-year view, from the Stone

Age through modern times. The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum concentrates on a far shorter, but intense span, from 1945 to 1976. They are opening Saturday, the day before the 200th anniversary of Mississippi becoming the 20th state. The two distinct museums under a single roof are both funded by state tax dollars and private donations. Officials insist the

museums are not intended to be “separate but equal” in a state where that phrase was cynically invoked to maintain segregated school systems for whites and blacks that were separate and distinctly unequal. “We are telling a much longer story in the Museum of Mississippi History, a much deeper story in the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum,” said Katie Blount, director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. “We want everybody to walk in one door, side by side, to learn all of our state’s stories.” The general history museum depicts Native American culture, European settlement, slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction. It examines natural disasters, including the massive Mississippi River ﬂood in 1927 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It also has only-in-Mississippi items such as the crown Mary Ann Mobley wore as Miss America 1959. The museums’ opening caps a yearlong bicentennial commemoration. Some events have celebrated Mississippi’s success at producing inﬂuential authors and musicians, such as William Faulkner, Richard Wright, B.B. King and Elvis Presley. Others took a critical look slavery and segregation. President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the museums’ opening, a White House official said Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the trip before it is formally announced. Republican Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, a Trump supporter, invited the president. The Mississippi NAACP president is asking Bryant to rescind the invitation, with state chapter President Charles Hampton saying. “An invitation to a president that has aimed to divide this nation is not becoming of this historic moment.” One of the nation’s poorest states, with See HARD HISTORY, Page 3

Glaude Jr., a 49-year-old Mississippi native who now chairs African-American Studies at Princeton University, said that “Mississippi was ground zero” for the civil rights movement, and it’s signiﬁcant that the state is presenting an honest account of its history. “America can’t really turn a corner with regards to its racist and violent past and present until the South, and particularly a state like Mississippi, confronts it — and confronts it unﬂinchingly,” Glaude said.

a population that’s 59 percent white and 38 percent black, Mississippi remains divided by one of its most visible symbols. It’s the last state with a flag featuring the Confederate battle emblem that critics see as racist. All eight public universities, and several cities and counties, have stopped flying the flag in recent years. There is no flagpole outside the new museums. Ellie Dahmer (DAY’-mur), the 92-yearold widow of slain civil rights leader Vernon Dahmer, said the Mississippi flag represents an unabashed defense of slavery. She marveled at the existence of the civil rights museum in a state that won’t abandon the banner. A display in the civil rights museum tells of the 1966 KKK firebombing of the Dahmer home outside Hattiesburg after Vernon Dahmer, the local NAACP leader, announced he would pay poll taxes for black people registering to vote. He fired back at Klansmen who were shooting at his burning house. The family escaped, but Vernon Dahmer’s lungs were seared and he died. The couple’s 10-year-old daughter was severely burned. Parts of the Dahmers’ bullet-riddled truck are in the museum with several photos. The Mississippi museum joins several others focused on civil rights: the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta ; the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee; the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Alabama; Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Alabama. Haute hamburgers and curated cocktails. Not exactly a classic match, but that’s just ﬁne and dandy with Ray-Scott Miller. In fact Fine & Dandy is the name of his new restaurant in Jackson’s District at Eastover. There’s more than a little whimsy with the restaurant, starting with the menu, which informs the diners that they are in “Fine Ole Jackson, Missis- Miller sippi.” From the list of curated cocktails, I chose de la Mississippienne, made with Rittenhouse rye, sherry, absinthe, yellow chartreuse liqueur and Peychaud’s bitters. The menu describes it as “boozy.” Mais oui. Et delicieux. (Sorry, certain menus set loose my limited college French.) Next time, I might try a Farish Street Colada made with Cathead Honeysuckle Vodka. No translation needed there for locals. The menu includes “Adult Shakes” with

a touch of alcohol. And “One More Drink”: the F-Bomb made with cold brew coffee and a shot of Fernet Branca on the side, presumably providing the F. On to the food. For a snack (appetizer, if you like), I chose Crab Z’Herbes Dip in a six-inch iron skillet, while my wife had Fine Deviled Eggs with smoked trout caviar, dill and shallots. I had to have one of the burgers. After all, I already had had a cocktail. And what are you gonna do after a cocktail but chow down on America’s sandwich? Cooked medium, as I had asked, it provided a surprise, for me, beyond The Standard’s lettuce, tomato, onions and mayo. I am a salt fan. But as I took a bite and then a second, I discovered that I didn’t want to add salt. So was it salty? No. I have to assume it was “well-seasoned.” Jill had the Cap’n Catfish sandwich with generous delecata filets from Simmons Catfish of Yazoo City. The sandwich had its own pleasant surprise: pickled raisins. Miller brought in Jesse Houston, formerly head chef at Saltine, which turned heads in the James Beard and Bon Appetit

worlds. His drinks counterpart is Jonathan Webb, bar manager, who after graduating from Millsaps with a degree in studio art decided that his post-graduate studies in religion and art didn’t do it for him, that crafting cocktails did, according to Miller.

Together, they have formed what owner Miller, owner of Miller Hospitality, describes as a “classy burger joint.” Miller Hospitality built out the restaurant from the shell provided by the developers of District at Eastover. Wier Boerner Allin Architecture of Jackson did the overall design, while Mary Sanders Ferriss of Ferris and Co. designed the interior. Ferriss’ portfolio includes all the Babalu Tacos and Tapas. The décor is both modern – airy and open – and generically traditional, the latter including “family portraits.” Hung just inside the entry are portraits of real but unknown “family” members. The wallpaper has a toile effect, with Jackson landmarks. If you notice that the

It overlooks the small “village green” that separates Fine & Dandy from Cantina Laredo, the modern-Mexican fare restaurant that opened in late July in the mixed-use development east of Interstate 55 in Jackson between Eastover Drive and Meadowbrook Road. Miller said his company, which owns four Newk’s franchises, plans to shift its focus to building other independent restaurants, though not necessarily from the same mould as Fine & Dandy.

Graham’s ‘we know what to do’ is not what they’re doing

nce upon a time balancing the budget and lowering the national debt were top Republican priorities. Over two decades ago Newt Gingrich led a GOP revolution to do just that. Our own Sen. Roger Wicker, then in the House, signed on to Gingrich’s “contract for America.” Back then, in 1994, the debt totaled $4.7 trillion. In July 2009, then Senate Republic Leader and now Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the national debt “threatens our way of life.” That year the debt was up to $10.6 trillion. In 2012, the leaders of the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform called it a “national crisis.” That year the debt hit $16.1 trillion. In 2015, Sen. Ted Cruz, a persistent debt hawk, said, “We need to stop bankrupting our country.” That year the debt hit $18.1 trillion. In January of this year, Secretary of Defense Gen. Jim Mattis agreed the national debt is the greatest threat to our national security. “I consider it an abrogation of our generation’s responsibility to transfer a debt of this size to our children,” he added. This year the debt topped $20.2 trillion. Dad gum annual deficits keep

adding to the total. Last year the deficit added $666 billion. Without any consideration of the tax reform bill gripping minds and hearts in Washington, annual deficits are on track to top $25 trillion by 2021. Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen last week said this debt trend “should keep people awake at night.” But, this ever growing “threat” and “crisis” somehow aren’t so gosh awful important right now. McConnell along with Cruz and Wicker pushed the Senate to pass a tax reform bill non-partisan experts say will add substantially to the debt. McConnell and company argue tax cuts in the bill will “pay for themselves” through economic growth. Debate on the bill temporarily stalled last week when Congress’s own Joint Committee on Taxation said cuts would still add $1 trillion to the debt after accounting for economic growth. They passed it anyway. So, Mitch, do skyrocketing deficits and debt not matter any more? Back in 2012, former Sen. Alan Simpson and former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles, who headed the National Commission on See CRAWFORD, Page 7

nconﬁrmed reports that Mississippi is unlikely to be the home of a signiﬁcant automotive plant jointly run by Toyota and Mazda are disappointing, but the result could offer some valuable insight for regional and state leaders to use going forward with other economic development

projects Officials with the two Japanese automakers announced earlier this year they planned to build a $1.6-billion automotive assembly plant, which would build the Toyota Corolla and future Mazda crossover vehicles by 2021. The facility, which requires at least 1,000 acres upon which to build, will employ up to 4,000 workers. Shortly after that announcement, the Wall Street Journal named 11 states on what it said was a short list of top candidates for the site: Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. Discussions here quickly turned to whether Mississippi would be home to this plant, essentially growing the state's existing partnership with Toyota, which already employs 2,000 people at its plant in Blue Springs, where the Corolla is built. The 2-million-square-foot plant, which began production six years ago, sits on a 1,700-acre site that already has a pad built to match the current plant's design, perhaps furthering the idea that our region would see another significant investment from a major international company. A report from Bloomberg citing sources familiar with the negotiations, however, states that Alabama and North Carolina are the likely finalists for the plant. Toyota and Mazda officials have yet to comment on the report, and state leaders are taking the same approach, a long-standing approach for current or active economic development projects. Reports also say that Toyota and Mazda are seeking incentives worth up to $1 billion for the joint-venture plant. Mississippi is also home to a Nissan plant in Canton, which opened in 2003. To lure the Japanese automakers, Mississippi offered $378 million in incentives to Nissan, while Toyota got $294 million. The $1 billion in incentives may be too much for the Magnolia State to bear. An available work force was always going to be a key factor in the decision, experts have said, with the plant needing a significant number of employees ready and willing. Tough labor market situations are commonplace in the majority of Southern states, an unfortunate reality that leads us to where we go from here. As always, we know our state and area leaders will not take lightly any project loss — even one yet to be officially confirmed. These are the opportunities where Mississippi should take a step back and take stock of where to go from here. While some factors regarding decisions like these might be out of our hands, others — such as prioritizing critical work-force development programs — can be realized to ensure a project like this doesn't slip through our hands again. Now is the time we — as a community, region and state — need to put innovative solutions on the table and discuss how to turn them into a reality in order to push Mississippi forward.

Oh yeah, they wanted to balance the budget just like Newt. Here’s one for you. In 2015 while running for President, Sen. Lindsey Graham said he would implement the Simpson-Bowles plan if elected. “We know what to do, but we’re afraid to do it,” Graham said. The Simpson-Bowles plan called for tax reform to raise tax revenues to whittle down the debt, not pump it up. Asked about the tax bill recently Graham said, “The Republican Party needs to deliver.” Later he added, “Cutting taxes is not going to add to the deficit in any appreciable way.” From balancing the budget to not adding “in any appreciable way!” That’s a pretty big swing, Lindsey! Oh, Graham said one other thing that may help you understand all this, “the financial contributions will stop” if tax reform fails. wo museums telling the story of Mississippi are opening on the eve of the state’s bicentennial, culminating years of planning. Many people deserve credit for pushing the projects from vague concepts into see-it-andtouch-it reality. High on that list is former Gov. Haley Barbour. During his final year in office, in 2011, Republican Barbour persuaded lawmakers to approve $38 million in state financing for the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum — two entities under a single roof. The plan came with a provision that money also had to be raised from private donors. “The civil rights struggle is an important part of our history, and millions of people are interested in learning more about it. People from around the world would flock to see the museum and learn about the movement,” Barbour said in his 2011 State of the State address. Ground was broken in 2013 for the two new museums , which are a short walk from the current state Capitol and the Old Capitol Museum in downtown Jackson. They open Saturday. Ideas for a general history museum and a civil rights museum had been developing for years on parallel tracks. The civil rights museum, in particular, was the subject of debate. Democratic Sens. Hillman Frazier and John Horhn of Jackson were among the sponsors of a resolution that lawmakers adopted in the spring of 2006, creating a study committee for a civil rights museum somewhere in the capital city. Months later, Barbour sent committee members a letter

saying he supported them and wanted to join their effort to create a “world-class museum.” Some wanted a civil rights museum to go on the campus of private, historically black Tougaloo College in north Jackson, which was a haven for activists during the civil rights movement. Others suggested an appropriate place would near Farish Street, a once-thriving black business district in downtown Jackson. Talk of a general history museum intensified after 2005, when Hurricane Katrina damaged the roof of the Old Capitol, which had long displayed historical artifacts. The Old Capitol closed for restoration, and then reopened in early 2009 with exhibitions focusing on how government works and the importance of historic preservation. Many artifacts were put into storage, and some will again be on view in the new, much larger Museum of zMississippi History. Hundreds of people have helped create the new museums — architects, designers, construction workers, archivists, researchers, display builders and others. Hank Holmes started working on the museums as director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History from 2005 until February 2015. Hundreds of people have helped create the new museums — architects, designers, construction workers, archivists, researchers, display builders and others. Former Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Reuben Anderson and Democratic former Gov. William Winter recommended to Barbour that the two museums be built side by side. Former Jackson Mayor Kane Ditto, president of the Archives and History board, led private fundraising efforts. Republican Gov. Phil Bryant has promoted the museums, and he signed a bond bill in 2016 that included $16.6 million for them. Myrlie Evers Williams, the widow of slain Mississippi civil rights leader Medgar Evers and herself a former national leader of the NAACP, was also instrumental in promoting the museums. USM honors Robinson

Longtime Sanderson Farms executive and former State College Board President Robin Robinson has been named the 2017 Boardman Alumna of the Year by The University of Southern Mississippi’s College of Business. The award, sponsored through an endowment by the late Joseph Robinson F. Boardman, is presented annually during the college’s Fall Honors ceremony. The daughter of a justice court judge and a USM accounting graduate, Robinson was born and reared in rural Mississippi, the same state where she would later serve as a community leader, education advocate and director for the only Fortune 1000 company headquartered within the state. Throughout her nearly 40-year career at Sanderson Farms, Robinson made history as the ﬁrst female Cost Accountant, Chief Accountant, Chief Internal Auditor, Human Resources Manager and the ﬁrst female member of the company’s Executive Committee. A graduate of Jones County Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi, Robinson earned an associate’s degree in business administration and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. She is Chairman of the Board for the Jones County Junior College Foundation and is a member of the Board of Directors for the USM Foundation, the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research and the University of Mississippi Medical Center, as well as serving on the External Advisory Committee for the University of Mississippi Medical Center Neuro Institute and on the Business Advisory Council for the College of Business. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi and the Greater Pinebelt Community Foundation. Robinson’s past appointments include serving on the USM Alumni Association’s International Board of Directors, as President of the Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees, as Chairman of Leadership Mississippi, and as Chair of the M.B. He graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson in 2013. Dave Bush, Executive Vice President and manager of The First Private Bank, a division of The First, A National Banking Association, has been named to the American Heart Association’s Volunteer Oversight Group for 2017 and 2018. Small Town receives honors Mississippi State’s Carl Small Town Center is receiving two statewide awards for its “Marking the Mule” project focused on advancing citizen engagement in the Marks community. CSTC Director Leah F. Kemp recently accepted a 2017 Public Outreach Award from the Mississippi Chapter of the American Planning Association. The award recognizes an individual or program that uses information and education to raise awareness about the value of planning among communities and locales. Award criteria include innovation, comprehensiveness, holistic approach, transferability, quality, implementation and technology use. The project also received an AIA Design Award from the Mississippi Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. In July 2015, MSU’s Carl Small Town Center was awarded a $25,000 Our Town grant by the National Endowment for the Arts to create a trail and make plans for an interpretive center that tells the story of a 1968 Mule Train, a program of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Poor People’s Campaign.”

‘Complicit’ is Word of the Year from Dictionary.com

ictionary.com has selected “complicit” as its word of the year for 2017, citing the term’s renewed relevance in U.S. culture and politics – and noting that a refusal to be complicit has also been “a grounding force of 2017.” The website defines “complicit” as “choosing to be involved in an illegal or questionable act, especially with others; having complicity.” Interest in the word spiked several times this year, Dictionary.com says – most notably when Ivanka Trump said in April, “I don’t know what it means to be complicit.” That remark came weeks after Saturday Night Live aired a segment in which Scarlett Johansson portrayed President Trump’s daughter in a skit to tout a luxury fragrance called Complicit. Its tagline: “The fragrance for the woman who could stop all this, but won’t.” The term spiked a third time, Dictionary.com says, after Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., announced in October that he won’t seek re-election to Congress, citing a “flagrant disregard for truth or decency” in the Trump administration. While those headline-grabbing mentions helped drive interest in and use of the term in the political arena, Dictionary.com says complicity also lurked behind many of the biggest stories of 2017. As examples, it listed humanity’s role in contributing to climate change, the normalizing of hate speech and supremacist groups, and the tacit enabling of sexual harassment. Referring to the spate of allegations of sexual assault and harassment against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and a number of other high-profile men, Dictionary.com says, “These powerful men could not have harmed so many people for so many years without the complicity of their associates and the established practice of ‘turning a blind eye’ to misconduct.” The choice for the word of 2017 made The Spin Cycle curious to see how much more prevalent the word has become in NPR’s coverage. A Google search for “complicit” on NPR.org returned 142 results from Jan. 1 through Nov. 27, 2017, compared with 75 results for the same period in 2016. A search of audio archives found the word in 51 NPR transcripts, compared with 33 results during the same time period in 2016. Choosing a word of the year is always an attempt to capture the zeitgeist. In the case of complicity in 2017, the site says, “It’s a word that reminds us that even inaction is a type of action. The silent acceptance of wrongdoing is how we’ve gotten to this point.” But the site also highlighted instances of action, and refusals to accept reprehensible or questionable conditions. It cited Sen. Flake’s stand as an example of that trend; it also noted the international Women’s

March that took place in January, and the use of the hashtag #metoo to raise awareness of sexual assault and harassment. In 2016, Dictionary.com’s word of the year was xenophobia, citing a surge in interest from users both in the U.S. and around the world. Record-breaking Cyber Monday sales total $6.59 billion More than 174 million U.S. consumers shopped in stores and online between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday, according to the National Retail Federation, with more than 81 million people shopping on Cyber Monday alone. Online sales hit a record-breaking $6.59 billion on Nov. 27, up 16.8 percent from the previous year, according to Adobe Analytics. Black Friday also broke records, with $5.03 billion in online sales. Adobe predicts this will be the ﬁrst-ever holiday season to break $100 billion in online sales. But it’s not only where people are shopping that is changing – it’s also how people are shopping. Mobile set a new record on Cyber Monday: 47.4 percent of shopping happened from either a smartphone or a tablet. That means Americans spent more than $2 billion right from the palms of their hands. “Cyber Monday broke records as consumers picked up their phones and tablets and went looking for the bargains they have come to expect on this day,” Taylor Schreiner, director of Adobe Digital Insights, told ABC News. “Better retail experiences, especially on mobile, likely made the shopping experience that much faster for consumers this year.” She added, “This year, mobile shopping was dominant both in the morning and afternoon, and desktop only staged a comeback in the evening when people were home.” Top selling items on Cyber Monday include gaming devices like the Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4/4 Pro; toys like Hatchimals & Colleggtibles ﬁgurines and PJ Masks; and streaming devices like Google Chromecast and Roku. So who spent the most? From Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday the biggest spenders were millennials, according to the NRF. And consumers were in the mood for deals: sales drove 60 percent of purchases, NRF said. Goooollllyy Mic: Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) Kept Us Laughing Well, Goooollllyyy! The world just got a little less funny with the death of Jim Nabors, who created one of TV’s greatest comedic characters, Gomer Pyle. The legendary entertainer, who underwent a liver transplant in 1994 after contracting hepatitis B, died peacefully at his

home after his health had declined for the past year. The Alabama native had a long career that featured TV and movie roles, more than two-dozen albums and numerous concert appearances, including long-running shows in Las Vegas and Hawaii, which became his home on a macadamia ranch in the 1970s. Nabors was best known for his role as the goofy, gentle Marine in the title role of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., a CBS comedy that was a topﬁve hit in the 1960s. Gomer’s dust-ups with his hard-nosed superior, Sgt. Carter (Frank Sutton), were the heart of the show, and the character’s trademark exclamations — “Well, Golllll-ly!” and “Shazam!”— became legend to legions of his fans. Nabors moved to Los Angeles at a young age, taking a job as a ﬁlm cutter at NBC. In his spare time, he acted and sang at a Santa Monica cabaret theater, The Horn. That’s where Andy Griffith discovered him and later offered him the chance to audition for the role of Pyle, the innocent gas station attendant on The Andy Griffith Show. The character’s popularity led to the later spinoff. After Pyle ended, Nabors hosted his own variety show, The Jim Nabors Hour, which ran for two years. He also was a guest on other

variety hours, including The Carol Burnett Show and The Sonny and Cher Show. Nabors also made waves in the music world. His welcoming baritone echoed across the airwaves on Andy Todd Smith Griffith, and he recorded nearly 30 albums, had ﬁve gold records and one platinum record. Goodbye, my childhood TV friend. I know the angels are chuckling and the Pearly Gates are rattlin’. eorge Atchley of Ridgeland is not the kind of guy who rushes into surgery. He’s lived with a bum knee since he woke up 10 years ago with a burning sensation in the joint. “The next morning it was completely numb, and it has been completely numb ever since,” said the retired planetarium director for Samford University in Birmingham. Atchley might still be ignoring the problem, if not for some pain-related sleep deprivation. “It started hurting deep down inside, and it was keeping me up,” he said. “When you can’t sleep, everybody tells you that you need to see the doctor. I was like a bear in the morning.” Atchley underwent laparoscopic surgery for a meniscus tear. And when his surgeon prescribed therapy, Atchley had the referral sent to the new Methodist Outpatient Therapy in Ridgeland. “My wife had already been going here for neurological therapy, and I liked the people,” he said. “It seemed like a modern facility with all the trimmings.” Opened in June in Ridgeland’s Olde Towne neighborhood, the clinic is the 12th addition to Methodist Rehabilitation Center’s network of outpatient services. Today, Methodist’s inﬂuence stretches north to Oxford, south to Hattiesburg, west to Monroe, La., and east to Meridian. Included in the mix are Methodist’s hospital-based outpatient clinic in Jackson, Methodist Pain & Spine in Flowood, Methodist Outpatient Therapy in Flowood and Ridgeland, Quest community reintegration program in Ridgeland, the Assistive Technology Clinic in Flowood and Methodist Orthotics & Prosthetics clinics in Cleveland, Flowood, Hattiesburg, Meridian, Oxford and Monroe. “After Methodist Rehab opened in 1975, we realized the recovery of our patients shouldn’t be limited to what they could accomplish during an inpatient stay,” said Doug Boone, vice president of business

hen Dr. Isaac Aultman ﬁrst opened a medical practice in Fondren about 29 years ago, some questioned the wisdom of opening an office in a depressed area. But it turns out that Aultman was rewarded by getting in on the beginning waves of the renewal that has made Fondren one of the most popular neighborhoods in the Jackson area. “The renaissance of Fondren was just beginning when I moved there,” Aultman said. “It has really come along.” Aultman, who named Physician of the Year earlier this year by the Mississippi Association of Family Practitioners, has seen major changes not just in Fondren, but in the business models for family practice during his 42-year tenure in family medicine. “It is more stressful today because of electronic medical records and the requirement to e-prescribe instead of writing a prescription on a pad like I was used to doing,” Aultman said. “I personally never adopted electronic medical records before I retired. And there are now all sorts of quality measures you have to comply with. There have been lots of thing piled on top of patient care from when I ﬁrst went into practice. Most doctors coming out now are employed by hospitals or other systems.” Before his recent retirement, Aultman also saw his patient base decrease as patients aged. His practice had gotten smaller by the time he retired. He sold his office building, but didn’t ﬁnd interest in someone purchasing his practice. Aultman graduated magna cum laude from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1971, did a three-year residen-

cy at the John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, practiced one year in Union, and then was an instructor with the UMMC residency program for a year and a half. He did emergency medicine for one year at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital, and then practiced in Flowood for ﬁve years, followed by practicing in Jackson for about 38 years. Even back in 1971, students in medical school were encouraged to consider specializing.

When you get with someone like that, it makes you feel confident. They have a path for you, and as long as you stay on that path, you’re safe.” Patients like Atchley often experience a number of MRC’s specialized therapies, from AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmills to SwimEx resistance swimming pools equipped with variable speed current and integrated motorized treadmills. But whatever the treatment, the goal is to get patients back to the activities they love. And it’s a mission shared by all of Methodist’s outpatient clinics. “I feel like a normal person” When Oxford Orthotics & Prosthetics fit Michael Ragan of Batesville with custom-designed braces, it was a life-changing experience for the pastor at Evening Time Lighthouse Church in Courtland. “I wish I had done it years ago,” he said. Now, he can walk faster and straighter. Climb stairs. Play basketball. Stand up and strum his guitar. And preach without holding onto the pulpit. “He’s like our poster person,” says Oxford clinic manager Shannon Aiken. “He says all the things we hope to hear people say. Now that we’ve given him stability, he can do more things.” Ragan is particularly happy that he can be an outdoorsman again. “Before, I wouldn’t go fishing on a bank because I’d fall and have to crawl up the rocks,” Ragan said. “And when I’d go hunting, I would fall in the woods—sometimes with a gun in my hand. I wouldn’t tell anybody because they’d say you don’t need to go hunting. “Now, I’m a 100 percent better. I feel

like a normal person. And I didn’t know how that felt.” Ragan was about 18 when he began suffering the more crippling effects of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Disease. CMT damages peripheral nerves, which relay the signals that initiate movement and transmit sensation. This leads to weakness and numbness in the extremities, typically impacting the feet ﬁrst. Foot drop — an inability to hold the foot horizontal — is a classic sign of CMT. Other symptoms include muscle wasting, stiffened joints and difficulties with balance. A neurologist ﬁnally pinpointed the source of Ragan’s problems. And when the physician referred Ragan to MRC, “I came the same day,” said the father of three. “If it was going to be something to help me, I wanted to get it done.”

To address Ragan’s concerns, Aiken custom-designed a pair of plastic AFOs (ankle-foot orthoses). They support and properly align the lower part of his legs and give him more stability. Aiken said it takes about two weeks to produce braces, but making sure they meet expectations is an ongoing process. A bit of tweaking is often in order to get just the right ﬁt and function. But Ragan’s ﬁlled the bill from the start. “It was nice almost immediately,” Ragan said. “I’ve been able to do the best hunting I’ve done in 20 years.” “I feel like I’ve never been injured” While many come to MRC’s outpatient clinics to reclaim favorite leisure activities, others are striving to return to work. Perry Hudson, for example, sought out Methodist Rehab’s expertise after a fall

at his workplace, the Yazoo County Correctional Facility. The tumble battered his right side, leaving behind a sprained ankle and bruised knee. But the worst of it was damage to the L-5 disc in his spine. Dr. Philip Blount, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician at Methodist Pain & Spine in Flowood, offered a twopronged approach to Hudson’s recovery. He recommended a pain-relieving injection, followed by physical therapy. Steve Friend, a veteran physical therapist at Methodist Outpatient Therapy in Flowood, began working with Hudson in July. And Hudson doesn’t believe coincidence brought them together. “I had high expectations that the Lord would lead me to the right facility to regain all my abilities,” said Hudson, who’s also a pastor at Helping Hands Outreach Ministry in Yazoo City. “And since I’ve started therapy, by the grace of God everything is going wonderfully. Right now my pain level is zero.” His limited standing endurance meant he also couldn’t preach as long as before. So his wife, church music minister Alberta Hudson, made sure he didn’t overdo it. “She would give me the eye or hit a tone on the keyboard,” he said. To help Hudson recapture the capacity to do more, Friend said he focused on tailored stretches and exercises for his back. “Everybody’s a little different, but I try to make the therapy program as active as possible, rather than the person receiving a lot of passive procedures,” Friend said. The exception was when Hudson had back pain flare-ups. Then he underwent some therapeutic taping and manual therapy, a hands-on treatment used to relieve muscle spasms, release tension and improve flexibility in the joints. Hudson also benefited from sessions with the HIVAMAT 200, a device that uses an alternating electrostatic field to create deep oscillation pulsations. It helps with swelling, muscle tension, poor blood circulation, sprains and strains and fibrous build-up from surgical trauma. The goal was to get Hudson back to work, and Hudson said he was fortunate to have an employer willing to work with him. “Warden Gary Edwards provided everything Dr. Blount ordered for me — a new office chair and no lifting or contact with inmates,” Hudson said. “It makes our job easier when those pieces fall together,” Friend said. But he added that Hudson has to be commended for his commitment to getting better. On Aug. 28, Hudson went back to work as a certified trainer for staff at Yazoo County Correctional Facility. And he said it was truly an answered prayer. “There was a time when I first came to Methodist when I could hardly bend over. I came in house shoes. I kept praying for God to strengthen my mobility and he did. When I leave Methodist, I feel great. There’s no pain and no stiffness. Right now I feel like I’ve never been injured.”

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The professors at the university were all specialists and would always try to talk you into a specialty if you showed an ability,â&#x20AC;? Aultman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had more than one who tried to talk me into to doing a specialty. I grew up in Seminary, which had a population of only about 350, and the only doctors I really knew were general practitioners. My general practitioner, Dr. Charles Tyler, delivered babies, did minor surgery, and the whole thing. He was a great person, too. I was inďŹ&#x201A;uenced by him to want to do family medicine.â&#x20AC;? Aultman found the most satisfying thing about family medicine was longterm relationships with patients. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had patients with me when I retired who were with me when I started,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That is something specialists donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t typically get to have. I really enjoyed that. Patients got to be kind of like family.â&#x20AC;? Aultman would often talk to patients about the importance of not smoking and a healthy diet, exercise and weight control. He recommends a Mediterranean or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, which is focusing on eating more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, ďŹ sh, poultry and nuts while limiting foods high in saturated fat, cholesterol and trans fats. Sodium, sweets and red meats are limited. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I tried to set a good example,â&#x20AC;? Aultman said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I kept my weight down and exer-

cised regularly. I play tennis. That is my favorite hobby. Before I retired I played two or three times a week. Now Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m up to six times a week. Plus, I work out at the gym, ride a stationary bike and do weights.â&#x20AC;? While most people wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be able to keep up with that, Aultman said studies show any amount of exercise has some beneďŹ t. The minimum should be 30 minutes three times a week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I would encourage my patients to do more than the minimum, but with so many patients, I was lucky to get the mini-

mum,â&#x20AC;? he said. While most of Mississippi has shortages of family care doctors, Aultman is encouraged by a rural scholarship program that pays the cost of medical school education for students who agree to go into primary care in smaller community in needy areas. And he said the College of Osteopathic Medicine at William Carey University in Hattiesburg is also helping train more primary care doctors to meet the demand. Aultmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career in medicine almost didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen. He and his father were struck by lightning when Aultman was 14.

His father recovered enough to give his son artiďŹ cial respiration, but initially got no response. They called a doctor, and a neighbor who also gave artiďŹ cial respiration and, after 40 minutes, Aultman started breathing on his own again. His revival was considered astounding, and was recounted on Paul Harvey News. Aultman and his wife, Rachel, have three adult children: Will works in information technology for a cable company, Emily works for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi and Daniel teaches English in Japan.

Milwaukee Tool to invest $33.4 million, create 660 jobs By JACK WEATHERLY jack.weatherly@msbusiness.com Milwaukee Tool is expanding operations at its three Mississippi locations, investing $33.4 million and creating 660 jobs over the next four years. The Mississippi Development Authority is providing $15.35 million in grants. The expansions are planned for the company’s plants in Jackson and Greenwood and its distribution center in Olive Branch. Milwaukee Tool Group President Steve Richman said in a release that “Milwaukee Tool is dedicated to driving growth and creating new jobs in the United States. “We currently employ over 3,000 people in the USA, more than 1,600 of which are in Mississippi. We are deeply committed to investing in our people as we continue to deliver [market] innovation and the highest quality products for our users and distribution partners.” Milwaukee Tool is a Brookﬁeld, Wis.-based subsidiary of Techtronic Industries Co. Ltd. Gov. Phil Bryant said in the release issued Wednesday after the announcement at the Jackson facility: “Once again, Milwaukee Tool conﬁrms its commitment to doing business in our state by growing its existing operations and providing hundreds of Mississippians with good, stable jobs.”

Atmos to raise rates for 260,000 Natural gas bills will rise beginning Jan. 1 for customers of Mississippi’s largest gas utility, after regulators approved plans Tuesday for Dallas-based Atmos Energy Corp to raise rates on its 260,000 Mississippi customers. Rates for a yardstick residential customer should go up by more than $2 a month, with most of the money going to pay for Atmos to repair and replace aging pipes and infrastructure. Atmos spokesman Robert Lesley said bills for a yardstick residential customer would rise from $51.54 now to $54.38, but Brandi Myrick of the Public Utilities Staff said almost $1 of that amount would be offset by other money Atmos will be refunding. Separately, Atmos will spend $5 million next year with the goal of adding 1,000 residential customers. Lesley said the increases are projected to raise the company’s revenue by about $9 million next year in Mississippi. Most of the money will go to repairing and replacing Atmos’ transmission lines and other infrastructure. Myrick said Atmos projects rate increases in future years for the same reason. Atmos Mississippi Division President David Gates said the company is trying to stay ahead of stricter federal requirements for natural gas pipelines after a series of leaks and explosions. Some of the money will go toward a program to expand natural gas to industries in rural areas. The residential expansion effort won’t require higher rates, though. Atmos will spend $25 million on the effort over the next ﬁve year, out of revenue the company was using for other purposes. That effort has been advocated by Public Service Commission Chairman Brandon Presley, a Democrat representing Mississippi’s northern third. Presley said Tuesday that access to natural gas saves those residents money. “Growing the number of customers helps all of Atmos’ other customers,” Presley said. He said rural customers deserve the same choices as urban customers. He said more than 3,000 people, mostly in his district, have expressed interested in access to natural gas. — MBJ Staff & Wire Reports

The city will receive up to $5 million in loans to purchase a building and make parking improvements. The Jackson plant, which makes power tools, will receive a grant of $1.5 million for building renovations and site improvements. The Olive Branch distribution center will receive a $350,000 grant for building renovations and site improvements. The agency will provide $1.5 million for each site for work-force training. Milwaukee Tool will create the jobs to accommodate cordless power tool manufacturing, accessory manufacturing and additional distribution capacity. “This is Milwaukee Tool’s fourth expansion in Mississippi since 2012,” MDA Executive Director Glenn McCullough Jr. said in the release. “The company’s success demonstrates the state’s commitment to supporting our corporate partners through dedicated teamwork and providing a business environment that enables companies to achieve their goals in Mississippi.”
