A startup’s guide to Mississippi

CAL-MAINE MISSES SALES TARGET; SHARES TAKE A HIT

I

can confidently say that it has never been easier to start a business. Having worked with hundreds of startup and emerging companies over the past 15 years, I have developed a fairly robust professional network throughout Mississippi (and beyond). And while my firm provides technical legal services to these companies, we believe it is our responsibility, as a trusted adviser, to help connect our clients to other resources they may need to succeed. This philosophy is premised on one of our firm’s core beliefs: our success is measured by the success of our clients.

So, to start off the New Year, I would like to share with you some helpful resources – including service providers we work with, partner with, and refer clients to – that can help launch startups into viable, successful businesses.

First, because we regularly file corporate documents all over the country, I can conclusively say that Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann has made forming a business in Mississippi easier than any other state in the United States. For only $50, anyone that can turn on a computer can form a corporation or limited liability company in Mississippi in mere minutes.

Then after obtaining a tax identification number from the Internal Revenue Service, you will be ready to open a bank account. Our favorite banks (in no particular order) are BancorpSouth, Renasant, and Trustmark. All three of these financial institutions understand and cater to the needs of small-business banking, and they each make opening a business checking account easy.

Next, if you need a quick visualization brand of your company or a bridge until you have the resources to sit down with a professional graphic designer or brand development firm, there are a number of websites that can generate a quality logo for your business, such as Logojoy and Wix. Once you have a logo, creating a modest splash page or functioning website can be done both easily and affordably.

We like Wix and Squarespace as simple self-help solutions for the web. Then after you have established a basic web presence, lock down the appropriate social media channels and you are essentially set, at least for the time being.

While everything discussed above is subject to numerous exceptions, the bottom line is these are examples of reliable, technology-enabled tools that are available for just about anyone setting up a new business. And the compelling thing is it can be done in a matter of hours!

Literally, you can wake up on a Tuesday morning and have a decent, functioning business presence established by lunch. It’s really quite incredible.

Now, if your business has more specific or specialized needs, there are resources throughout Mississippi to assist you – from guidance to funding. For example, if you are a technology-based business, we recommend connecting with Innovate Mississippi, a nonprofit organization located in Jackson that assists pre-revenue and post-revenue technology startups develop and hone business strategies, find funding, and accelerate growth.

If you are an entrepreneurial minded college student and need startup assistance, start with your university. We have worked extremely closely with the wonderful people at the Mississippi State University Center for Entrepreneurship and Outreach by advising some of their student-led startups through the entity formation and capital raising process. Eric Hill, the director of entrepreneur-

ship, has developed the VentureCatlyst program, which is a comprehensive, co-curricular program for its students and faculty who are interested in starting an investor-backed company.

If you are an entrepreneur in central Mississippi looking for support, check out ElseWorks at the Else School of Management at Millsaps College, my Matthew McLaughlin alma mater. ElseWorks is a faculty-led program designed to encourage and promote entrepreneurship and positive social change in the community, state, and region. We have worked in partnership with ElseWorks on a number of startup projects in the Midtown Neighborhood, and I will attest to the fact that the value the companies receive through ElseWorks is tremendous.

When you are ready to hire a creative firm, CPA firm, or other professional service provider, Mississippi is home to amazing and trusted talent who have a passion for helping startups, such as Mad Genius, JFP Web, and Grantham Poole CPA, among many, many others.

If your startup is in need of more sophisticated web or app development, I suggest joining the Jackson Area Web and App Development meetup group and attending their monthly meetings. This group is made up of nearly 800 professional web and app designers and developers located in the Jackson area. Yes, you read that correctly, nearly 800 professional web and app designers and developers in the Jackson area.

Another aspect to consider is that many startups begin operations working remotely from home or at coffee shops. While this is a low-cost strategy, if you are looking to network and expand your business, there are cost-effective co-working space solutions available. In the Jackson area, I would suggest checking out Mantle in Fondren or Coalesce in Downtown Jackson.

Lastly, once a startup has met a certain measure of success, a financial investment may be needed to continue the growth trajectory, and seeking venture capital in the form of angel investments may be the next step to consider. If you are vetted and meet certain requirements, there is money for the taking through angel investors, including such groups as the Northeast Mississippi Angels, MSU Bulldog Angel Network, and Mississippi CAPCO programs.

It is my hope that this column serves as a resourceful guide for Mississippi startups and also a source of inspiration … because at the end of the day, like my firm, there are other countless service providers in our state who not only want to help startups grow, but who also measure their own success by the success of their clients.

By JACK WEATHERLY jack.weatherly@msbusiness.com Cal-Maine Foods Inc. reported a net income of $21.8 million, or 45 cents per share, for the second quarter of fiscal 2019, compared with a loss of $26.1 million, or 54 cents per share a year earlier.

Net sales for the quarter that ended Dec.1 were $356 million, a 1.4 percent decrease from $361.2 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2018.

Sales missed the target set by analysts, according to MarketWatch.

The company, the nation’s largest producer of in-shell eggs, noted that results for the second quarters include charges for certain legal after-tax settlements of $1.7 million and $52.8 million, respectively.

Excluding these items, net income was $23.7 million, or 49 cents per share, and $26.6 million, or 55 cents per share, respectively.

The report released before the Nasdaq market opened on Friday has led to a drop in share price. On Monday, there was a fall of $1.99, or 4.57 percent, per share. The FactSet consensus was earnings of 48 cents per share with one-time exclusions.

The 52-week range of the shares is $39.90 to $52.30. They have fallen 4.8 percent in the past three months, according to MarketWatch.

The company states on its website that “in fiscal 2018, we sold approximately 1,037.7 million dozen shell eggs, which we believe represented approximately 20 [percent] of domestic shell egg consumption.”

Dolph Baker, chairman and chief executive officer of CalMaine, stated in the release that “our sales for the second quarter were down 1.4 percent, reflecting a modest decline in volumes and lower average customer selling prices for conventional eggs compared with a year ago.

“While we experienced volatility in market prices during the quarter, our overall average customer selling price for shell eggs was down only 0.8 percent, compared with the second quarter of fiscal 2018. Per capita egg consumption is has risen to near historic levels, but the USDA reports that the hatch is up 10 percent year to date, though the actual hen inventory is up only 2.8 percent. Hen numbers are forecast to continue trending upward for the next several months, which may continue to affect market prices into 2019.

Sales of specialty eggs were up 3.7 percent over the year-earlier period. Specialty egg prices were up 2.9 percent.

These eggs -- cage-free, nutritionally enhanced and organic -- comprised 35 percent of total shell egg revenue, compared with 32.3 percent a year earlier, Baker said. That excludes copack sales for certain private brands, he said.

“We continue to invest in our operations to improve overall efficiency and to prepare for the expected continued increase in demand for specialty eggs, especially cage-free eggs.”

For the second quarter of fiscal 2019, Cal-Maine will pay a cash dividend of approximately about 15 cents per share to holders of its common and Class A common stock. The dividend is payable on Feb. 14 to holders of record on Jan. 30.

By TED CARTER mbj@msbusiness.com A partial federal government shutdown that has brought Mississippi’s Small Business Administration lending to a standstill threatens a growth spurt SBA lending is having in the state.

Without a thaw in the federal freeze, the state’s SBA operation could lose an opportunity in 2019 to build on several years of loan growth that have pushed the value of loans it’s backed to over $160 million annually.

Community Bank’s Brad McGee is eager to get back to it. “We are losing valuable time,” he said.

Until the light changes, McGee and his co-workers will continue catching up on loan servicing and other responsibilities.

They will also continue to initiate new loans that will go to the SBA for review after the agency reopens. Otherwise, the SBA is out of the picture for now, said McGee, senior vice president of the $7 billion, 10-location Community Bank and head of its SBA lending.

“Pretty much the gist of everything is that any existing SBA customer or existing loans on the books, we can still service those,” he said.

But, McGee added, the “shutdown shuts down the funding of new deals from the SBA side.”

Further, any SBA-related transactions in the pipeline won’t be funded. But banks can still close on loans the SBA authorized before the shutdown, he noted. And borrowers can still apply.

“We’re doing as much of the underwriting as we can at the bank level,” McGee said.

Many of the loans wouldn’t be happening at all were it not for the SBA, according to McGee, who said the federal agency’s backing helps lower any “heartburn” attached to making the loan.

Brandon-based Community Bank made 28 SBA loans, averaging $129,450, in fiscal 2017, the last period for which loan amounts are available. The loan volume gave it a fifth-place ranking for SBA lending in Mississippi. Trustmark National Bank topped the lending list with 51 loans averaging $73,896. BankPlus followed with 48 loans that averaged $425,777, according to the SBA.

It’s also business as usual at the entrepreneur assistance centers at Jackson State University and the University of Mississippi, he said.

Donovan said his state-operated center did not get a heads-up from the SBA before the start of the partial federal shutdown in late December.

As Christmas approached and a shutdown looked more likely, the SBA issued a plan of action “in the event of a lapse in appropriations.”

Staff and SBA programs and grants funded on a continuing basis, rather than yearly allocation, would remain active.

Those exempted from furlough include SBA presidential appointees and staffers at the Office of Disaster Assistance The agency asked the soon-to-be-absent workers to document the status of cases and projects so they can be resumed, transferred, or otherwise handled when the funding situation is determined.

The key order: Cease obligating the SBA in business loans.

With the SBA’s popular 7 (a) lending program, the agency pledges to cover 70 percent to 80 percent of the loan if a default occurs. Even with a new requirement that the borrower put up equity of at least 10 percent, loan growth is rising by double digits. Or at least it was before the furloughing of all but a designated handful of employees starting Dec. 22.

The SBA’s Mississippi loan dollars grew by 12 percent in fiscal 2017 over fiscal 2016.

It approved 405 loans through its 7(a) and 504 programs that totaled $164.7 million.

Of the loans in FY 2017, new businesses received 226 of them while 167 went to existing businesses. More banks and credit unions got involved as well, according to the SBA, which it signed up 10 new lenders in the fiscal year.

The SBA did not respond to inquiries to its Washington, D.C., headquarters. Callers to the Mississippi district office in Jackson were advised that agency workers are on furlough until further notice.

SCORE, formerly the Service Corps of Retired Executives, shares national headquarters space with the SBA. Callers to the SCORE HQ heard a message that SCORE staff and volunteers must stay out of the federally owned building until further notice. SCORE volunteers are available to mentor businesses from their homes, the message said.

The situation with SCORE is different in Mississippi. The business-assistance organization’s volunteers operate out of space provided by state or local governments or chambers of commerce, said Joe Donovan,

Cultivation Food Hall offers variety of cuisines

Cultivation Food Hall will open this weekend in The District at Eastover and feature nine artisanal vendors.

It has been developed in consultation with St. Roch Market in New Orleans, one of the pioneers in the food hall movement.

Cultivation Food Hall is on the ground floor of the BankPlus Building and encompasses 8,260 square feet, not including patio seating.

It is open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. till 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. till 11 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. till 9 p.m.

The food hall is the latest major addition to the mixed-use new urbanism district located on the east side of Interstate 55 in Jackson between Eastover Drive and Meadowbrook Road.

Patrik Lazzari, a native of Sweden who grew up in Italy and has lived in Jackson since 2002, is general manager of the hall.

He and his wife, Cristina, a native of Argentina, with Austin Lee, will run one of the eateries, Bocca Pizzeria and offer Neopolitan pizza.

Just as he and his wife are a “cultural blend,” the nine operations will share their specialties under one roof, and in one kitchen, said Patrik Lazarri, an engineer specializing in buildings.

He is co-founder of the Mississippi chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and has been a consultant since 2010 and has worked for Yates Construction.

Jackson-based Mary Sanders Ferris, who designed Fine & Dandy in Eastover, along with Babalu tapas and tacos in the city and elsewhere, was the design consultant.

Canizaro Cawthon Davis are architects of record.

The space includes the Living Room,

which will be able to accommodate private events of up to 100.

“We really spent a lot time and effort in creating a space that would create a good ambiance for our guests,” Lazarri said.

“It’s not just about food. It’s about the space, the ambiance that is cultivated.

Hence the name ‘Cultivation Food Hall.’

“We’re really happy with the outcome,” he said.

“It’s a communal space,” he said, even the kitchen.

While there is a commonality, there is variety.

Fauna Foodworks offers “bohemian-chic” cuisine, under the guidance of Chef Enrika Williams, a Mississippi native who has extensive experience and training, including under noted masters such as New Orleans chef Emeril Lagasse and in Italy.

Gold Coast Bar will celebrate Prohibition era night life in what was formerly known as the “Gold Coast of Mississippi,” a bend of the Pearl River. il Lupo Coffee will serve espresso and milk-based drinks, along with drip and pour-over coffees, handcrafted beverages and loose-leaf teas. il Lupo is Italian for “wolf” and is a subtle homage to Mississippi-born blues legend Chester Arthur Burnett , best known as Howlin’ Wolf.

Fete au Fete StrEATery will serve upscale Southern comfort food with a Louisiana twist: Hot muffulettas, crawfish poutine or shrimp and grits, with house-made fresh sausage, poached eggs or “trash grits” on the side. Fete au Fete is the brainchild of chef and long-time food truck advocate Micah Martello.

Local Honey is another concept by Martello, offering what he calls, “healthy food, redefined” – a new take on salads, steel-cut oats or quinoa bowls, smoothies and avocado toast.

Poké Stop is fresh, healthful and innovative, allowing guests to create their own sushi, according to California native turned Mississippian Rachel Phuong.

“When I heard that the first food hall in all of Mississippi is coming to Jackson, I knew I wanted to be a part of it,” she said.

Whisk, a Crêperie by La Brioche, is a creation of the Jackson French bakery, La Brioche, and will serve savory crepes for breakfast, lunch and dinner made with the traditional, nutty flavored and gluten-free buckwheat flour filled and topped with traditional French ingredients such as ham

and Gruyere, or Italian influenced dishes such as prosciutto with figs, arugula and balsamic. Some creations are inspired by local ingredients and recipes.

Guests will also choose from sweet crepes at Whisk, featuring classics such as the Suzette.

Ariella’s Delicatessen owner and chef Alivia Townsend said: “When the opportunity . . . presented itself, I knew it was not only the perfect location but also the perfect concept to incorporate a New York deli.”

Ritchey breaking ground on dealerships

By JACK WEATHERLY jack.weatherly@msbusiness.com Ritchey Automotive scheduled a ground-breaking for Thursday at 11 a.m. for a $15 million facility that will be home for two dealerships – Audi Jackson and Jaguar/Land Rover Jackson – on Interstate 55 in Ridgeland.

The group announced early last year that it was relocating the franchises from 5320 I-55 in Jackson.

Joe Usry, Ritchey general manager, will be on hand with partners Taylor Wondries, Don Kitchens, Jeff Field and Kent Ritchey.

The project will consist of the 26,000-square-foot facility for Audi Jackson and a 21,000-square-foot dealership for Jaguar/Land Rover.

The new location is at 7036 I-55 North Frontage Rd. between Wilson Hyundai and Patty Peck Honda.

“We are thrilled to unveil the future of high-perfor-

mance luxury car buying,” Usry said in a release.“We’re proud to be able to make this commitment to give our customers the very best service, selection, and buying process. We will provide a customer service level that can’t be matched. We’re making it easy.

“This very well may be the best time to buy from us because we don’t want to pay to move these vehicles,” Usry said. “We’re rolling out additional rebates and discounts to make buying from us even easier,” he added.

The group also operates Landers Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Nissan and Ford franchises in DeSoto County and a Ford franchise in Shelby County, Tenn.

rea’s with brain power have a competitive advantage over other areas,” I researched and wrote in a column 16 years ago. “Brain power is the gold of the 21st Century in America.”

I recalled this column after reading a recent opinion column by Dr. Cathy Grace, the co-director of the Graduate Center for the Study of Early Learning at Ole Miss. Her piece highlighted Mississippi’s continued, stubborn reluctance to invest in early childhood education.

“Currently Mississippi invests $6.5 million dollars in pre-kindergarten,” she noted, adding that the Education Commission of the States report for 2016-2017 showed neighboring states Arkansas, Alabama, and Tennessee invested $105 million, $64.4 million, and $86.6 million, respectively. All experienced higher average annual economic growth over the past decade than Mississippi, with Mississippi one of the lowest three states in the nation.

“The numbers speak for themselves,” Grace concluded.

So, back to my 2003 column on brain power (excerpts shown in quotations).

“The 2000 Census shows that just one out of eight adults in our region has a university degree of any kind.

produce citizens without the brain power needed to compete for top 21st Century jobs. School data shows too many of our 3rd graders cannot read at ‘proficient’ levels…too many of our 7th graders are not ‘proficient’ in basic math…and too many of our students drop out.”

(While we have made some progress in these areas, particularly in third grade reading and graduation rates, we still have a long, long way to go to be a state known for its collective brain power.)

“A prerequisite for brain power is brain development. Research shows that many of our students who cannot read at grade level in the 3rd grade, who cannot do basic math, and who drop out, suffer from inadequate brain development.

“The critical years for brain development are from birth to age four. Children in poverty, unhealthy, and/or abusive environments have a high risk of poor brain development.

“Too many of our most at-risk children have little access to early childhood programs and enter kindergarten unready and unable to learn.”

he lack of access to affordable high-speed internet is one of the greatest challenges facing rural America today. As society becomes increasingly wired, the impact of not having robust online service becomes more acute.

No longer is it merely about entertainment or social communication. Barriers to high-speed internet limit access to educational resources, employment opportunities, business technologies, telehealth services, job training courses and so many benefits that have become vitally important in today’s world. The issue puts rural communities at a significant competitive disadvantage in terms of attracting both businesses and residents.

In a predominantly rural state like Mississippi, the topic takes on added significance.

Yet, while most would agree that it’s important to expand rural broadband, the question becomes how to do so and at what cost.

That’s what makes it meaningful to find private models elsewhere that have proven successful. And you don’t have to look far beyond Mississippi to find one that has gained national recognition.

The Tombigbee Electric Cooperative in Hamilton, Alabama, is providing high-speed internet and HD phone services to its customers, utilizing the infrastructure it has in place to reach its rural members. It’s a model that could have a big impact here with one catch – state law currently restricts Mississippi’s electric power associations to providing only electricity.

That’s why Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley is leading a push to change that 1942 law.

The Mississippi Broadband Enabling Act would allow EPAs to own, build, maintain and operate a broadband system as part of their electric delivery system, as reported by the Daily Journal’s Dennis Seid. It would not require EPAs to provide such service, but would give them the option. It also would not spend any public funds.

The bill appears to have broad bipartisan support among Mississippi lawmakers, who open a new legislative session today. Supporters also include the state chapter of AARP, the Mississippi Farm Bureau, the Mississippi Association of Realtors, 41 counties and 62 cities.

We think it is a common sense solution to an important challenge, and we urge lawmakers to act quickly to pass it.

The bill will not immediately solve Mississippi’s need for rural internet. Installing broadband will be expensive, and many electric associations will not opt to do so.

In Alabama, Tombigbee Electric Cooperative has spent $45 million in offering the service, but it has done so in phases over a number of years. TEC was also aided by private investment and state and federal grants.

If such a model has worked in Alabama, Mississippi should be allowed to try it.

As more children read with comprehension, the quality of school programs will increase, the quality of high school graduates will increase, and the quality and quantity of our college and university graduates will increase, providing us significant homegrown brain power.”

(On the other hand, regions that do little to spur homegrown brain power will find themselves at a competitive dis-advantage.)

Kudos to Dr. Grace for continuing her decades-long efforts to educate our leaders on facts and opportunities most other states, including our neighbors, have understood and acted upon for years…to the benefit of their economies.

Guns and abortion could be election-year issues

M

ississippi lawmakers have released few significant policy proposals as they prepare for their three-month session that begins Tuesday.

This is an election year, and most of the 122 House members and 52 senators will put their names on the ballot to seek a new four-year term. A few lawmakers are retiring, and a few are pursuing statewide offices.

Some of those trying to return to the Capitol are likely to remain relatively quiet in hopes of not attracting an opponent. Candidates’ qualifying deadline is March 1, about twothirds of the way through the session.

Some lawmakers, though, could offer bills designed to grab headlines and generate buzz on social media.

Guns and abortion are reliable attention-getters in Mississippi.

Gun rights are a big deal in a socially conservative state where generations grow up deer hunting and many people want firearms to protect themselves and their property. Republicans, Democrats and independents campaign on being staunch supporters of the Second Amendment, and many boast about having high ratings from the National Rifle Association.

One of the most outspoken supporters of pro-gun legislation in recent years has left the Mississippi Legislature. Republican Andy Gipson served a decade in the state House before GOP Gov. Phil Bryant chose him last spring to fill a vacancy as state agriculture commissioner.

Among the gun bills Gipson sponsored was the “Mississippi Church Protection Act” which became law in 2016. It

said churches or other places of worship could designate members to receive firearms training to provide security for their congregations. It also allowed people to carry holstered weapons without a permit, making Mississippi the ninth state to have such a law, according to the NRA. During the bill signing ceremony, Bryant had a holstered pistol sitting atop a Bible on his desk.

Some lawmakers say they want to make school security an issue this session, but detailed proposals have not been released. Attorney General Jim Hood, a Democrat who is running for governor, says his office will back a bill that would require school districts to create a website or text message system to let students pass along anonymous tips with concerns about bullying or mental health issues that could lead to on-campus violence. It’s unclear how much such a plan would cost or how it would be funded.

Abortion could become an issue in Mississippi again this election year, even as the state is still in a court fight over a law enacted last year.

The 2018 law, which has yet to be enforced, would ban most abortions after 15 weeks. The only abortion clinic in Mississippi says it provides the procedure up to 16 weeks, and it sued the state immediately after Bryant signed the law

last March. A federal district judge temporarily blocked the state from enforcing the law. Then, the judge ruled in November that the law “unequivocally” violates women’s rights.

However, in Mississippi and across the nation, abortion opponents are feeling emboldened by the addition of Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. That means there could be efforts for conservative states to enact laws that could spark court battles aimed at trying to overturn Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court’s 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.

Letting the sunshine break through

I

caught a patch of sun in a corner of our courtyard at home last weekend. The sun was low but healing.

I was the last in our family to catch whatever it was, flu or old-fashioned cold and fever.

What had made it worse was the interminable rain. Day after day with no letup.

Sun we take for granted, and can do without it for a while, but not forever.

There were other “solar” moments during my extended holiday break.

I met Felder Rushing in the canned vegetables aisle at Kroger.

As a man in a brimmed gardening hat passed by, I said, “Are you Felder Rushing?”

He stopped, smiled and said yes.

I told that we try to catch his show every Saturday morning on public radio.

And that when my wife sends him a question by email, we appreciate his thoughtful promptness in responding.

But, really, what was the host of the Gestalt Gardener, lecturer, author and free spirit, doing in Kroger. It’s a bit of an overstatement, but it seemed like a little miracle amid the mundane.

“We thought we’d stay in and make a pot of vegetable soup,” he told me on that particular rainy day.

But, I thought to myself, you’re Mr. Hor-

ticulture who drives his famous green pickup and, pushing 67, looks for all the world like an aging hippie.

Canned vegetables?

“What are you looking for?” I asked.

Sweet corn, he said.

Funny thing, I just happened to be looking for sweet corn myself.

“My wife wanted white,” he told me, though he may have said yellow. “But I told her there is no difference between white and yellow,” just the color.

Why? I asked.

“Because the horticulture gods decided there would only be two,” he said with a smile, which, by the way, never left his face as we chatted.

I asked him if I could take his picture.

Yep, he said, let’s do a selfie.

I had never intentionally done one of those, to be honest.

He even had to coach me a bit.

After he flipped his hair from beneath the collar of his jacket and from underneath his hat, I took the photo.

Note to self: smile when you do a selfie, especially when your captive subject is smiling.

I bade him goodbye and he headed on down the aisle.

Note to self: look for the sun. It will ap-

pear.

I don’t know whether Peggy Noonan has a sunny disposition. But she had been President Ronald Reagan’s speech writer.

Reagan was conservatism with a smile.

She still packs a punch, whether the line at the end of a joke or a shot to the solar plexus. These days, she’s an op-ed contributor for The Wall Street Journal.

She is her own woman. Listen to this quote from her post-Reagan years, and surely after his demise.

“The battle for the mind of Ronald Reagan was like the trench warfare of World War I: never have so many fought so hard for such barren terrain.”

Ann Coulter, the right-wing iconoclast, could write for the oft-scowling current president, Donald Trump, though what a job that must be, or for any position in the White House.

Noonan writes in her latest op-ed piece about one of the Newest Left’s latest targets on an endless list. Nothing is safe.

“Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” a classic novelty love song that has been around for 75 years, has been deemed by the thought police to be sexually aggressive in the wrong way.

“The song flirty and humorous, a spoof of the endless drama between men and

women,” Noonan says.

Jack Weatherly But the #MeToo movement sees its lyrics “as somewhat rapey,” Noonan writes. So drop it from playlists and otherwise ban it, they insist.

Such neo-puritanism is a threat to creativity and freedom of expression, as Noonan sees it. Me too, if I can use that phrase without getting in trouble.

Sun can energize and disinfect. Ouch, that sounds clinical.

Let’s try a song that emerged from social upheaval: “Aquarius” (otherwise known as “Let the Sunshine in” from the musical “Hair”) which is a mere 50 years old.

I feel energized now that I have found a publication that absolutely thrills me.

It’s the weekend edition of The Wall Street Journal, with its generous array of delicious, thought-provoking pieces, rather than efforts to inhibit thought, which has contaminated even long-established publications that used to have a steady hand on the helm.

You can’t time the market » Why you should avoid

practicing market timing

W

hy you should avoid practicing market timing There are many things that could affect the overall equity market and any individual stocks you may own—from economic trends to geopolitical events like an election. What is certain is that the market will always have its peaks and dips.

This market cycle can make it tempting for investors to attempt to buy and sell stocks at particular times to maximize gains and avoid down periods. This investment strategy is known as market timing, the practice of moving in and out of the market based on predicting when the market will shift.1 Missing out on market moves Although the idea of market timing can be tempting, it is also extremely difficult for most investors to predict the future of the market. In fact, those who try to time the market may actually underperform investors who simply buy and hold stocks.2 One reason is the tendency of the market to experience big upswings and downswings on adjacent days during periods of market volatility. That means an investor who

sells after a substantial down day for the market may miss a subsequent period of gains. Also, many investors let emotions dictate their actions, leading them to buy stocks when the market has already gained in value, only to sell when the market has declined, leading to sluggish returns. Moreover, even Justin Kelly with sophisticated tools to analyze the factors affecting stock prices, it is very difficult to forecast future stock market movements.

Also, missing out on just some days in a market cycle can drag down returns considerably. The S&P 500 generated an annualized return of 9.6% between 1990 to 2018 for investors who were invested during that entire period. Investors who missed just the 15 best days during that period only enjoyed returns of 3.6%, and investors who missed the best 90 days actually suffered an annualized loss of 3.5%.3 Market timing can carry costs Along with possibly missing out on market gains, market timing can have other penalties. The transaction costs from buying and selling stocks can add up and drag down overall returns. In addition, investors who do sell stocks for a gain will likely trigger capital gains taxes, again reducing their overall profit.1 Creating and staying with a financial strategy can help

Windfield tabbed as MVSU’s director of alumni relations Mississippi Valley State University’s Office of University Advancement has brought on a new director of alumni relations who is familiar with the institution and all things Valley.

Jackson native Kylon T. Alford-Windfield, a 2013 graduate of MVSU, has been tabbed as the Windfield director of alumni relations. His primary duties include serving as a liaison between University administration, the National Alumni Association, area chapters and alumni of the institution.

He officially began in his new role Nov. 1 Windfield said he’s humbled and excited to serve in this capacity at his alma mater.

Dameon Shaw, MVSU’s interim vice-president of advancement, said bringing Windfield aboard should provide a boost of energy to the department.

Windfield said he hopes to help improve efficiency in key areas of the office while maintaining the same welcoming culture that was established by the previous director, Willie Young, who retired in June.

Windfield said he also plans to increase contributions from alumni and university stakeholders.

Before joining the Office of University Advancement, Windfield served in MVSU’s Office of Admissions and Recruitment for three years. Prior to that, he worked briefly at Rust College in Holly Springs.

He believes the skill set he gained while working in Admissions will transfer well in his new role.

Burks named as president of Private Client Services Renasant Bank announced that Greg Burks has been promoted to President of Private Client Services for Northeast Mississippi. Burks joined Renasant in 2007, having previously served as First Vice President and Private Client Advisor. He will be located at Renasant’s Fairpark Burks location in Tupelo, and will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships and assisting clients with their financial needs.

In addition to his MGM leadership responsibilities, Lunn has played an active role in the community by volunteering for Opportunity Village, serving on the executive board of the Epicurean Charitable Foundation, and mentoring future hoteliers through UNLV’s Mentor Program for the past six years.

Lunn received his bachelor’s degree in Hotel Administration from the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

MGM Executive Travis Lunn PGA Tour honors Sanderson named President & COO of Farms Championship for Beau Rivage “Best Charity Integration” MGM Resorts International has announced the appointment of Travis Lunn as president and chief operating officer of Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, where he will oversee daily operations while providing strategic direction and leadership.

In 2017, more than $300,000 was donated to local charities across the state, in addition to a record-breaking $1.2 million donation to Friends of Children’s Hospital. Tournament proceeds will fund construction of a seven-story, 340,000-square-foot pediatric tower that will be home to 88 private neonatal intensive care rooms, 10 additional operating rooms, more pediatric intensive care space, a pediatric imaging center, an outpatient clinic and a new lobby.

Sanderson Farms Inc. CEO Joe Sanderson, and his wife Kathy, are chairs of the $100 million fundraising campaign and personally pledged $10 million over the next five years.

The award represents the third time the tournament has been recognized at the PGA Tour Tournament Meetings, but the first since 2010 when it received “Best Special Event.”

Leadership Mississippi celebrates 54 graduates in class of 2018 Mississippi Economic Council’s Leadership Mississippi program announced the 54 graduates of the Class of 2018.

The Class of 2018 participants completed five sessions in locations across Mississippi, including Jackson, Oxford, the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Tunica, and Columbus.

MCBL&F appoints Harber chairman of Health & Wellness Committee Murray L. Harber is the Executive Director of the Mississippi Business Group on Health, a coalition of more than 70 Mississippi employers that seek continuous improvement in the quality and cost effectiveness of health and health care through shared solutions. Murray also consults with companies that provide innovative solutions to employers which provide value. He is a national speaker for several large pharmaceuticals and business organizations on value-based benefit design, employee health management, and maximizing human performance in athletics.

Murray holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education majoring in Human Performance and Sports Studies from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Murray began his career serving as a strength and speed coach before moving into employer-based health center management. He has developed award winning employer health and wellness programs including Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company (SFBLI), the University of Minnesota, Hennepin County, MN, Park Nicollet Health Services, and UAW Ford Motor Company. Dr. Thomas E. Dobbs named new state health officer

The Mississippi State Department of Health announced that Interim State Health Officer and former State Epidemiologist Thomas E. Dobbs, MD, MPH, has been appointed Mississippi’s new State Health Officer.

Former State Health Officer Mary Currier, MD, MPH, retired October 31, 2018, after almost nine years as State Health Officer. Dobbs’ appointment came during a regularly scheduled State Board of Health meeting.

Dr. Dobbs is a board certified Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine physician with extensive training in public health and epidemiology. Dr. Dobbs recently joined MSDH as the Deputy State Health Officer after two years working in Laurel as a practicing physician but also as Vice President for Quality and Chief Medical Officer of South Central Regional Medical Center. Prior to this he served four years as a District Health Officer in southern Mississippi and then four years as the State Epidemiologist with MSDH. Dr. Dobbs is a graduate of Emory University and received his medical degree and his Master’s degree in Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has been active in public health research and advocacy, working globally through the Gorgas Tuberculosis Initiative in Russia and Cambodia, and in the U.S. through appointments at UMMC and the University of Florida (as regional clinical consultant with the Southeastern Regional TB Center). He has an appointment at the John D. Bower School of Population Health at UMMC, teaching Epidemiology and Health Policy.

MSU’S GROGAN HOPES C SPIRE EXPERIENCE A BOOST TO FUTURE

J

ohn Grogan’s age belies his enjoyment of classic literature.

The Mississippi State University senior, who just turned 21, discovered dystopian novels such as 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 as a middle schooler in Clinton.

For the uninitiated, dystopian fiction centers on the portrayal of a setting that completely disagrees with the author’s ethos.

“I can’t really relate to 1984 but I did enjoy reading about a different form of government and way of life. The authoritarian/totalitarian form of government is not something I want to be a part of,” he said. “As for Fahrenheit 451, I read it my freshman and senior years of high school. Grogan It shows that knowledge and power won’t be easily toppled or forgotten.

“The symbolism in the book, though somewhat bleak, does give hope.”

However, Grogan’s career focus lies not in classic literature but in the computer world – cybersecurity, specifically.

Last month, he and two other college students were chosen to participate in a joint fellowship program between C Spire and Nokia Bell Labs. The program offers college juniors and seniors majoring in computer science and electrical or computer engineering at the University of Mississippi and MSU an opportunity to conduct relevant industry research alongside world-class scientists, engineers and technologists.

“I feel very proud and honored to have been selected,” he said. “Not only will working outside Mississippi be its own experience, doing research at (Nokia) Bell Labs is an opportunity most people don’t have.”

C Spire President Stephen Bye says the company has long supported academic excellence but has focused more recently on community-based training efforts to help students turn their education and training into a professional career.

“These students are some of the best and brightest, and represent future leaders in our industry,” Bye said. “This fellowship program allows them to hone their academic and research skills by working on projects that will make a difference.”

Bye and Nokia Bell Labs President Marcus Weldon agreed to develop a joint fellowship program in 2016 tailored to the needs of the work force in the South.

Grogan applied for both an internship and the fellowship program last fall, encouraged by his data communication professor, Maxwell Young.

“During my first semester (at MSU), I was an undeclared engineering major and took a programming class,” he said. “I really enjoyed it to the point of changing my major to computer science.”

Soon after, Grogan’s burgeoning interest grew to cyber security after talking with friends in the field. He admits that he enjoys the defensive side of cybersecurity, but not so much offensive

tactics such as penetration testing and ethical hacking.

“The offensive side consists of malware analysis, computer forensics and network security,” he said. “(Defensive security) involves thinking in ways people don’t normally think. Not only that but defending the cyberspace is what needs to be done, and it’s where the future of computer security lies.”

Grogan, who is on track to graduate in May, said he sees two big challenges in the computing world – cost and legislation.

“The cost of cybersecurity has always been there. Companies have to ask, ’is it worth implementing security protocols, and, if so, how much do we spend on implementing it?’”, he said. “As far as legislation, there isn’t much regarding data privacy and cybersecurity. There is sort of a patchwork of laws trying to accomplish the same goal in the US, but those laws only target specific industries.”

The son of two research civil engineers, Grogan said he’d like to stay with C Spire after graduation and isn’t opposed to working his way into management roles – with one caveat.

“I would like to stay in computers, and would certainly feel more comfortable managing the people who have the same background (in computers) that I do,” he said.

Computer replacement and upgrades should be part of a business plan

Few things can cause more panic in the workplace than suddenly having the computer malfunction. It can be crippling to productivity when the machine you rely on to get work done is broken.

It can be a good idea to replace or upgrade a computer before it reaches the age when it is likely to malfunction.

“I like to say every couple of years is about the life of a computer, but people do tend to push them out longer than that,” said Kenny Wilkinson, director of technical services, Loud Technology, Madison. “If you have a desktop, you could upgrade the hard drive and RAM to push it out a little farther. Usually between two and four years, you are probably going to want to replace those.”

What is the biggest mistake he sees customers make with their computer systems?

Not getting them serviced properly. Often there may be spyware or malware on the

computer from browsing the internet. Removing the malware or spyware can make a big difference.

“A lot of times computers can run a lot faster with an optimization,” Wilkinson said. “That is a fairly quick process that Wilkinson can be done in an hour for most customers. Advertisements are a lot of times where you get your spyware and malware. You have to be careful or call someone you trust to make sure it is valid offer.”

Malwarebytes and its AdwCleaner are the main tools he uses for optimizing. He also checks for and removes old programs that are not being used. And having a good virus protection program is essential.

“You don’t hear as much about viruses, but I do get quite a few calls as regards a broken computer due to a virus,” Wilkinson said.

Even with a new computer, it is always

good to have a backup plan. Wilkinson said a backup computer, hard drive, disks or cloud storage for disaster recovery are good to have.

Most companies will get new computer equipment every three years, said Dave Lowery, who owns CPR Cell Phone Repair shops in Jackson, Clinton and Hattiesburg.

Lowery, who formerly worked for HP, said some consumers can get away with using their computers for five years.

“We do have the capability of taking out an old hard drive and putting in a new hard drive or bigger hard drive, and the person can continue using that unit,” Lowery said. “It just depends on what of flavor computer they have. We work on desktops, laptops, tablet, drones, Bluetooth speakers, gaming systems and just about any phone except flip phones, which are going away.

built different. I use a commercial-graded HP laptop. It is called a work station.”

Lowery said every three to five years a computer should be updated as not only do components wear out, but technology changes.

“You have to keep up with that,” he said.

Lowery said about 95 percent of his customers are not properly backing up data in case of a malfunction or natural disaster.

While storing backup data in the cloud is a common solution, he personally just uses a flash drive. He backs up important data and programs to a flash drive and puts in it a fireproof safe in a location away from the office.

Each of his three CPR Cell Phone Repair locations repair about 300 devices per month. About 60 to 70 percent of the business are in phones. Today smartphones are often as critical to operating a business as a desktop or laptop computer.

Depending on the version of the phone, smartphones can be repaired by replacing the digitizer, which is cheaper than buying a new phone that can cost $999 not including sales tax, a case and a repair plan.

Apple recently announced it is expecting to lose $9 billion because of weak iPhone sales blamed on it being cheaper to replace the battery than buy a new iPhone. Lowery said repairing old iPhone is a popular alternative to buying a new one. Repairs start at $59 and go up from there.

Lowery said the decision on when to repair rather than replace electronic devices depends on how old the device is and whether parts are available.

“People come in with an old iPad to repair, but you can buy a refurbished one for about $99,” he said. “People come in with pay-as-you-go phones that only cost $50. That isn’t something they want to get repaired. They are better off to get a new phone.”

One of the most common problems with phones is the screen has been damaged. People can minimize repairs costs by purchasing a good protective case and screen protection.

By MBJ STAFF jack.weatherly@msbusiness.com Pacific Retail Capital Partners – which bought the 958,000-square-foot Northpark Mall from the Simon Property Group for an undisclosed amount in September 2016 – decided to exercise its first-right of refusal option, which was part of the acquisition, and bought the UA Northpark Theater two years later.

One recent news report says the owners now have shut down the theater. Numerous calls to Northpark and El Segundo, Calif.-based Pacific Retail were not returned.

When it announced the acquisition in September of 2018, Pacific Retail said it was “weighing all options” on the property.

The theater’s website has no listings of movies.

Denny’s ‘accidentally’ sends out Super Slam press release draft June 5 In the early days of June, reporters at nearly a dozen media outlets were perplexed after they opened what appeared to be the working draft of a press release from Denny’s sent out by mistake. The “mistake” release, promoting the chain’s $5.99 Super Slam, was scrumptious for Denny’s, helping it break through to the press about the “crazy” deal value.

Netflix urges people to stop ‘Bird Box’ challenge Over the holidays, Netflix’s popular movie “Birdbox” captured audiences, sparked debates and kicked off an avalanche of engagement with its 45 million viewers.

The film – starring actress Sandra Bullock – has fueled one of the latest dangerous internet “challenges,” and Netflix is urging fans of the movie not to participate.

In today’s media-driven world, people have struck a frenzy, uploading and sharing videos of themselves wandering around blindfolded doing the #BirdboxChallenge, which is inspired by scenes depicted in the movie.

In the movie, Bullock (Melanie) and two children (Boy and Girl) navigate a post-apocalyptic world while blindfolded to avoid seeing a dangerous being. In “Bird Box,” seeing the brutal barbarian has deadly consequences.

In hopes of going viral, people attempted to copy the movie by wearing blindfolds, staggering through their homes and fumbling around outdoors, a recipe for disaster.

In one take, a blindfolded family of three is seen running around indoors for eight seconds before a toddler smashes into a wall. In another video, a motorist covers his eyes with a beanie hat while driving on a highway.

Netflix issued a wake-up call on Twitter, writing: “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”

Touchdown Mic| Clemson annihilates Alabama for National Championship Let’s face it; nobody on the planet saw this train coming!

Tigers 44, Tide 16. The College Football Playoff National Championship was a mauling from the opening whistle to the closing clock. And when it was all over, and the football fog parted, it was an unmistakable orange crush. The tenacious Tigers trounced the hapless – and surprisingly mistake prone – Crimson Tide. In the end, Bama was about as effective as a hand-

cuffed pachyderm!

The deer in the headlights domination on football’s biggest stage was a sight to behold. The Tigers asserted themselves as the best team in the country with a convincing victory. It certainly wasn’t surprising that Clemson won – these two powerhouses have gone head-to-head for four straight seasons in the College Football Playoff.

The bewildering part was how out of sync Alabama looked. A Clemson tsunami pounded an ebbing Tide. Simply put, it was a train wreck of epic proportions.

Alabama fumbled and threw interceptions – and seemed like they had no fire, no passion, no preparation. The Tigers, meanwhile, were fireballs of fury! Two costly turnovers led to Clemson touchdowns, a botched fake field goal attempt, undisciplined penalties and an inability to stop Clemson on third down was a recipe for disaster.

The two champs have now won 11 of the past 12 CFP games and each of the past four national titles. Just how close these programs have been in that span, though, is a shrinking space between Dabo Swinney’s Clemson program and a Nick Saban dynasty that has been the barometer for every other team in the land.

The Tigers made history with the victory; it’s been 121 years since a major college football team won 15 games. The 1897 Penn squad also finished a perfect 15-0.

Clemson achieved that Monday night with a performance for the ages – that will go down as one of the biggest national championship whuppins of all time!

True freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence stole the spotlight from Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa with a night filled with deadly accuracy. That strength led to a 3116 Tigers halftime lead, and there were no answers, no looking back. Lawrence’s ability to make spectacular plays on the most pressure-filled stage fueled sustained drives, exposing one of the few weaknesses in Alabama’s defense this season. Lawrence threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns, and Tagovailoa was replaced by Jalen Hurts in the fourth quarter.

And the championship couldn’t have gone to a greater, more humble, more humorous coach! Swinney stood toe-to-toe with the football dragon – and slayed the dominant beast!

And in the aftermath, he became the preacher of the gridiron. “Only God can do this, and that’s a fact,” Swinney said in a postgame interview. “People think I’m crazy or quacky or whatever, but only God can orchestrate this.”

‘Nuff said!
