A longshot phone call to real estate magnate Donald Trump nearly 30 years ago by a convenience store owner in Greenwood eager to build a motel started a series of events that has been nothing but good news for the Chawla family. Trump returned the call and told V.K. Chawla he was impressed by his dream, but that he should try for an SBA Minority loan. A $450,000 loan was secured by the immigrant from India, who built a 40-room motel, the first of 17 hotels the Chawla family now op-
erates in the Delta. The latest news is that Chawla Pointe LLC has been chosen to be the first to operate the latest Trump Hotel chain, called American Idea, and another called Scion. Donald Trump Jr. and brother Eric, who are guiding their father’s real estate empire now that their father has become president, have said that accompanying their father on the campaign trail was a “crash course” in America. “We saw so many places and towns and [heard] to many stories,” Donald Jr. said. Alfonse K. “Pop” Primos immigrated from Greece and opened a restaurant at 236 Capitol St. in 1930. The restaurant operated there till 2002. Primos Northgate opened in 1964 and stayed open for the next 37 years, said Don Primos, owner and a grandson of the founder. During the years, several family restaurants have operated simultaneously. Subsequently, two Primos operations were started in Ridgeland in 2002 and Flowood in 2006. Now a third will be opened in Madison. Located at the intersection of Highway 463 and Highland Colony Parkway, it is scheduled to open in January, Don Primos said. Despite the Greek heritage, the Primos restaurants have concentrated on American food, and the newest one will be no different, Primos said. The restaurant will offer blue plate lunches six days a week, in addition to breakfast and supper. See PRIMOS, Page 5
