Fleet Feet opening second location in Jackson Metro area

By BECKY GILLETTE mbj@msbusiness.com Customers in the Jackson metro area will soon have two locations to choose from if they want to visit a store the specializes in “inspiring and empowering the runner in everyone.” Lesley and Matthew Holleman own and operate Fleet Feet in Ridgeland, and plan on opening a second location in Flowood by Thanksgiving. The 1,956-squarefoot store will be in the Lakeland Commons shopping center at 153 Ridge Way. Lesley Holleman started as an outfitter with Fleet Feet in Ridgeland in 2003. Three years later when the owner left to take ownership of a store in Nashville, Tenn., Holleman joined the five-year Fleet Feet’s Development Company Program that helps put people on the path to franchise ownership. In 2011, the Hollemans became the official owners of the Ridgeland location.

Some people might be surprised the Jackson metro area could support not one, but two, stores focused primarily on running. But Lesley Holleman said there are absolutely enough runners in the area to support specialty retail.

“Our Ridgeland store has been open and successful for almost 17 years now,” she said. “The community of runners who support our store every day are unbelievably passionate, welcoming, and have helped us build something truly special in the Jackson area. Their support has fueled our growth in ways we never dreamed, and allows us the opportunity to build the same type of community in the town of Flowood.”

Holleman has considerable practical experience in the demands of running. She has competed seven marathons including the Boston Marathon and the Chicago Marathon, and has done numerous 5Ks, 10Ks, and half-marathons.

However, she said they are focused on so much more than running. Some of their customers may be training

for a marathon, some are just starting a general walking or exercise program and a number of them are just trying to make it through the workday without pain. “Our goal is to help them all reach their goals no matter what they are,” she said.

Holleman said a good running shoe will perform well for most sports, but some people may require shoes more specific to that activity.

“We have a wide variety of supportive insoles that we can outfit most cleats, football, basketball, tennis and even cheerleading shoes with,” she said.

And Fleet Feet is about more than shoe wear.

“Our goal is to outfit you from head to toe,” Holleman said. “We have amazing socks, clothing, nutritional products, headwear, compression products, massage tools, sunglasses, GPS watches and more. We also offer training programs to help runners of all skill levels reach their goals.

We host weekly fun runs that are laid back, free, welcoming to all and super fun. We also have Fleet Feet Running Clubs that cater to beginning, intermediate and advanced runners.”

Holleman said their store is about more than products.

It is about building a running community.

“If all we did was sell products, our jobs would be really boring,” she said.

Some people have learned that it is difficult to buy shoes online that fit. So, this is one place where a retail outlet is usually a better alternative than buying online.

Holleman finds that shoes are a pretty personal item.

“A shoe can make or break your race, your exercise routine or even your day,” she said. “Feet are unique and we are experts in matching your foot to a specific fit. Yes, trying them on is important, but even more beneficial is having a relationship with your store. It’s extremely helpful to have someone you can talk to in person about your feet, your activities, your issues and your likes/dislikes. On top of that, we want to know how your shoes/gear performs for you.

If it doesn’t meet your expectations, we want to know and make it right.”

Robyn Goby, vice president of development for Fleet Feet, said the Holleman’s commitment to the greater Jackson area running community is a prime example of the power of local ownership.

“From Lesley’s early days working under veteran Fleet Feet store owner Jeff Wells, to her time in our store development company program, to both Lesley and Matthew’s leadership as co-owners of the Ridgeland store, the Hollemans continue to live by the belief that running changes everything, and have proven that for countless members of the Jackson running community,” Goby said.

Fleet Feet, in partnership with Volumental, launched the fit id in 2017. Goby said in five seconds, the foot scanner measures foot width, arch height and other measurements, which can be seen on an iPad. “These measurements can be used to find shoes that fit your foot type more accurately,” Goby said. “Fleet Feet just launched a one-of-a-kind running shoe called the Ikoni. This is the first ever running shoe constructed from the data points of over 100,000 customer 3D foot scans. These scans and specifically 7 of the 12 total data points captured from the scans help inform the build of the shoe last, a 3D mold which serves as the basis for shoe construction and accounts for shoe dimensions including heel width, instep height and toe box depth among other points.”

The Flowood store will employ up to 10 full and parttime positions, and will offer training programs for The Big Run 5K June event through Fleet Feet Running Club beginning in March 2019.

Founded in 1976, Fleet Feet said it is the largest franchisor of locally owned and operated running stores with 175 locations in 37 states and a national headquarters in Carrboro, N.C.

‘PARKLET’ WELL-RECEIVED IN DOWNTOWN JACKSON

And so the city may move forward with another, according to Travis Crabtree, urban designer for the city.

The parklet -- wooden benches and planters and spaces for small lightweight tables and chairs-- occupies what had been parking spaces on the east side of Congress Street in front of the Plaza Building.

In September, the city installed the cedar elements, using a $15,000 grant from the AARP as well as $1,500 from Entergy Mississippi and $500 from Downtown Jackson Partners. No city money was used.

“It’s a six-month sort of trial, but based on the positive response, we feel like it it’s semi-permanent,” Crabtree said Tuesday.

Michael Laskin, owner of Basil’s restaurant in the Plaza Building, said, “We’re pleased as punch. We hope it’s a permanent thing.”

Downtown is undergoing a decade-long effort to reinvent itself – as a mixed use area with apartments, retailers and restaurants. More than a quarter of a billion dollars has been invested by the private sector, and three times that much in the public sector.

“Sweetie Pie’s” will bring with it the panache of television exposure. It was a popular reality show on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network.

It will be the fourth restaurant in the soul-food chain. There are two in St. Louis and one in Houston.

Crabtree says if the final conclusion is that the parklet has been successful, another may be installed around the corner on the north side of Capitol Street.

The city is working with Metairie, La., developer Kip Gilbert, who is renovating the Heritage Building on smaller buildings along side it on the south side of Capitol, including putting in more apartments.

He bought several vacant buildings on the opposite side of Capitol and is reclaiming them to be offered as retail space.

Crabtree said the parklets are part of what he calls “tactical urbanism,” which will be unveiled in the future, though he would not say what the term means in this case.

The drilling of a few oil wells in southwest Mississippi and the recovery of the price of crude have awakened hopes, however slight, of a revitalization of the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale “play.”

Prices plunged from about $100 in mid2014 to the low point of around $40 by the end of that year.

But the price of West Texas Intermediate crude reached $76.91 last month, nearly a four-year high, though it has slipped since, settling on Tuesday at $62.21 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

It will probably take a sustained price of $80 to $90 a barrel to support broader production out of the formation, said Bernel McGehee, who tracks the industry in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, which straddles southwest Mississippi and southeast Louisiana. McGehee operates a website, TMS Horizons.

About the time of the peak in prices in October, an Australian company announced it had started drilling three wells in Amite County, according to the Associated Press.

Australis Oil and Gas Ltd. plans to drill 10 wells in that part of the play and using an approach that “gets the top production at the lowest price out of these wells,” McGehee said in an interview.

“Nobody else, to my knowledge, is interested in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale,” he said. Five companies were operating in the play as of 2016.

The formation is believed to have the potential of 7 billion barrels of oil.

The domestic industry was largely “victimized” by its own success through the revolutionary technology of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which in the past decade took the United States from dependence on foreign oil.

As recently as 2016, five companies were operating in the formation. And mineral-rights holders were still hopeful of realizing a handsome return on their holdings.

The oil that comes out of the TMS is actually “Louisiana Light Sweet” Crude, which is a very clean and costs less to refine,” McGehee said.

Thus, it sells for more on the market. Louisiana Light closed for $71.42 on Monday and West Texas Intermediate was $63.12, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, for example.

But it is also deeper that than other formations and is more costly to extract, than, say, West Texas Intermediate out of the Permian Basin, said McGehee.

I

was recently listening to a craft brewing industry podcast, and it was about a brewery that had dealt with two significant issues early on in its existence. As I sympathetically listened, the founder of this brewery recanted two excruciating tales of “mistakes” that ended up costing his business and its investors nearly $155,000. As I listened (and cringed), I could not help but think of how both of these “mistakes” could have been so easily avoided had he initially engaged with an expert to help him navigate the brewery startup process.

The first mistake this brewery founder made was not fully understanding the state licensing requirements for his business model and the premises contiguity requirement for the licensed premises. Essentially, this business owner signed a lease on two spaces separated by a common hallway, spent $80,000 in a buildout, and was then subsequently denied a state brewpub license because the two leased spaces were not contiguous.

The second mistake made was that he did not perform a zoning ordinance and code review of the second location chosen after the first space was unable to be permitted. In this second situation, while state law allowed on premises sales at a licensed brewery, a local ordinance required a certain percentage of sales to be derived from

the sale of food in a non-industrially zoned area. However, in this instance, the brewery was fortunate that the local municipality was willing to walk it through the conditional use process … though this “mistake” still cost the brewery $75,000 and took 18 months to resolve.

Both of these situations illuminate a multitude of issues that any new business could potentially face. However, it’s important to note that, fundamentally, both could have been avoided, and for less than a few hundred dollars, had this business owner consulted with a subject matter expert. The reality is, this brewery (really its investors) expended six figures on “mistakes” – and had those been avoided, it could have instead invested those very funds into aspects of the business that would have worked for them by generating revenue and long-term value.

Unfortunately, I see situations like this every day. Most are not six figure mistakes, but I have seen early stage companies unknowingly make fatal mistakes – meaning the company is over before it starts because the founding team did not surround itself with the right professionals who know how to both mitigate risks and navigate small business creation.

My advice, whether you are launching a brewery, a mobile app, or anything in be-

tween, is simple: from the onset of your business, hire an accountant, an insurance agent, and a lawyer. No exceptions.

If you are in a position where you are considering engaging with a legal professional for your business, allow me, as an attorney who works with breweries, startups, and small businesses, to also offer the following advice: Take the steps to find a lawyer that specializes in the precise area of law you need. If you are starting a scalable venture, hire a lawyer that knows the startup space. If you are purchasing a parcel of real estate for a large multifamily real estate development, find a lawyer that specializes in commercial real estate. This is a critical step that, in the end, will save you time, stress, and potentially, like the brewer’s experience from the podcast, a lot of money.

While you may have noted how specifically I described the areas of expertise above, I did so because it’s worthwhile to understand that just because a lawyer handles certain corporate matters, it does not necessarily mean that he or she understands the specific issues relevant to scalable startup companies. And on that same note, just because a lawyer handles residential real estate closings, it does not necessarily mean that he or she are well suited to handle commercial real estate transactions.

In other words, identify a lawyer who is not

only technically proficient in the exact area of law you need, but also one that represents similar clients operating in the industry in which you are doing business.

Always ask the experts, because lawyers Matthew McLaughlin and other professionals that operate within specific industries will provide you far greater value. These are the professionals who understand the industry, who know the industry trends, and who have successful relationships with investors, lenders, vendors, suppliers, and distributors – all of which, in turn, will be tremendously beneficial to you in the long term.

Usury proscriptions forgotton in Mississippi

L

iving in a very Christian state, most Mississippians should remember the biblical proscriptions on usury.

Here’s one: “Thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbors by extortion, and has forgotten me, saith the Lord God.” (Ezekiel 22:12) Many Mississippi leaders have forgotten.

Once Mississippi’s maximum annual finance charge was 8 percent. Anything over was usury.

Indeed, such usury rules were the law of the land through most of the 20th Century. Starting in the 1980s, states including Mississippi began to relax these rules. Lately, Mississippi has caved in to special interests.

The 8 percent maximum charge remains in law today, but the legislature has added exception after exception.

Today, every special interest has its own rule allowing higher rates.

Market forces tend to keep rates for creditworthy borrowers reasonable.

For the least creditworthy, however, market forces tend to evaporate. Reasonable finance charge caps are their only hope for fair rates.

Mississippi Today reported 18 states, including Arkansas, Georgia and North Carolina, prohibit extremely high lending fees, with movement un-

derway in Alabama to do the same.

Contrarily, economic freedom apologists funded by the wealthy Koch brothers’ network, e.g. MSU’s Institute for Market Studies, strongly push a worldly view that there should be no caps at all.

State caps on bank finance charges are 10 percent or 5 percent over the federal discount rate for traditional loans, 10 percent or 5 percent over the 20-year U.S. bond rate for mortgage loans and loans financed by stock, and 1.75 percent per month (21 percent annually) for credit cards.

Caps on closed-end credit sales charges are 24 percent and on loans over $2,500 are 15 percent or 5 percent over the federal discount rate. There is no cap for mutually agreed upon finance charges for loans of more than $2,000.

Caps on rates for used car refinancing range from 18 percent to 28.75 percent and for mobile home financing from 15 percent to 25 percent based on amounts financed.

The top rate for pawn shop charges is 25 percent.

Striking in the waning days of World War I, the virus sickened 500 million people around the world and killed 50 million, as the Daily Journal’s Michaela Gibson Morris reported in a weekend story reflecting upon the 100th anniversary of the devastating outbreak.

The 1918 pandemic killed an estimated 675,000 Americans. To put its impact in perspective: » HIV killed 448,060 Americans between 1981 and 2000 » World War II killed 418,500 Americans » The 1968 H3N2 flu pandemic killed 100,000 Americans » The 2017-18 flu outbreak killed 80,000 to 90,000 Americans.

A century after the outbreak, it’s important to be knowledgeable about a global event that caused so much havoc. It’s also important to take and use any lessons that are still applicable today.

That starts with taking the flu seriously. Even with advances in modern medicine, the world remains vulnerable – particularly in a tightly connected society in which it is much more conducive for a disease to spread.

National and international public health agencies put a lot of effort into monitoring seasonal flu outbreaks and watching for the emergence of new flu viruses that could spark a pandemic.

Flu shots can help against seasonal flu outbreaks by both reducing the risk of getting infected and reducing the severity of the sickness if one does get infected.

By its definition, however, a pandemic flu involves a new strain of the virus that the population has little or no immunity against. In such a case, the flu shot won’t be much help; at least not immediately.

That’s when healthy habits and an understanding of how the flu spreads can help slow its momentum.

People with the flu can spread it to others from about six feet away, which is why it is so important for those who are sick to stay home. Practicing good cough etiquette by coughing or sneezing into an elbow or a tissue also helps. Washing your hands when you get home from a public place is a smart strategy, too.

“There needs to be an ongoing education about how people can protect themselves,” said Dr. Bhagyashiri Navalkele, infectious disease specialist at University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Public health experts warn that it’s not a question of if a pandemic flu will come again, it’s when.

loan. In 2016 the legislature added an “alternative” finance charge cap of 59 percent for loans over $4,000.

Getting kind of high? Well, consider the following levels for the least credit-worthy.

Payday loan companies can charge up to $21.95 per hundred dollars for 30-day loans up to $500, an annualized rate of 263.4 percent.

Title loan companies can charge 25 percent per month for a contract up to $2,500, an annualized rate of 300 percent.

And, since 2016, there are “credit availability” installment loans with finance charges up to 25 percent a month plus a 1 percent origination fee for six-to-twelve month installment loans up to $2,500. That’s an annualized rate of up to 297 percent.

Mississippi’s Catholic Bishops called such rates “predatory.”

Clarion-Ledger columnist Jimmie E. Gates called for “more stringent regulations on the amount of interest and fees they can charge.” Greenwood Commonwealth Editor Tim Kalich called the practice “sinful.”

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith.” (Timothy 6:9-10) Faithful Mississippians should think about these things as next year’s elections approach. Should our policy be to pray for the poor, or to prey on them?

Hood’s downcast pitch clashes with sunny GOP take

A

t times, it seemed like the politicians addressing the Mississippi Economic Council last Thursday were mainly there to boost or oppose Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith’s bid to retain the U.S. Senate seat to which Gov. Phil Bryant appointed her.

Lt. Gov Tate Reeves even made it explicit, saying he wasn’t going to talk about the 2019 state elections, which relieved him of affirming that he would indeed run for governor.

“The most important elections to the future of Mississippi’s economy are the ones taking place next Tuesday,” Reeves told attendees at the council’s Hobnob event at the Mississippi Coliseum.

But Attorney General Jim Hood, the Democrat who seeks to deny Reeves’ ascension to the governor’s chair, didn’t get the memo. Hood made the case that members of the state’s chamber of commerce should consider supporting him. The organization has stuck close to Reeves, with MEC President Scott Waller praising him Thursday for delivering a signature goal of the group, a phase-out of Mississippi’s franchise tax on business capital.

It was an unusually animated speech for Hood, and at times sounded as if it came from an alternate universe rather than the one occupied by the state’s Republican leaders.

“They’re going to tell you how great things are, but let me tell you the truth about what our economy is,” Hood said.

“Mississippi has the worst economy of any state in the union.”

He also argued that the special session earlier this year that ended in a deal for more money for roads was “smoke and mirrors” in part because it didn’t produce as much money as

was needed to cover the needs of the state highway system.

Hood also criticized Mississippi’s refusal to expand Medicaid, arguing that’s the root cause of rural hospital struggles.

This is the challenge that Democrats have. Has growth been poky for years in Mississippi coming out the recession?

Yes, and it still is, compared to the rest of the nation. But it would have been an easier case to make in 2014 or 2015, when the state’s economy slid back into recession while the rest of the nation was growing. It would have also been easier in 2016 and 2017, when Gov. Phil Bryant was making mid-year budget cuts or lawmakers were whacking the budgets of state agencies.

Since then, things have gotten better, both in terms of the economy and state tax receipts. Average weekly wages in the first quarter of 2018 were up about 2 percent, while the state’s economy has added 20,000 jobs this year.

“I guess the lowest unemployment in Mississippi’s history just doesn’t matter,” said Bryant, clearly mocking Hood. “Tell that to the 77,000 Mississippians who have a job now that didn’t have a job in 2011.”

trail to “strip some bark. I’m not going to stand by and let any politician criticize what we have accomplished.”

Reeves, for his part, didn’t keep his promise to not talk about 2019. After praising educational improvement and the

“I look forward to talking about our vision for the future of Mississippi — a vision that includes a balanced budget, a vision that includes less debt on the books, a vision that includes fewer taxes,” he said.

Hood will have to overcome that pitch, plus Republican affirmations that things are getting better. But maybe Hood is more aware of this challenge than he lets on. After all, at one point during Thursday’s speech, he said: “Leadership is about telling people something maybe they don’t want to hear.”

It’s not REM, but Rusty Healy Agency is working out just ďŹ ne

By NASH NUNNERY mbj@msbusiness.com If Rusty Healy had his druthers, he’d be playing his dream gig as lead guitarist for 1980s indie rock band REM. But instead of basking in the afterglow of sold-out arenas and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Healy works in the insurance business as the owner of the Rusty Healy Agency in Madison. Channeling his inner Peter Buck (founding REM guitarist) got put on the backburner in the late 80’s when Healy gave up his rock career for something a little more solid. “I’m still waiting on that call to play guitar with REM,� he said, laughing. “However, playing bass with the St. Matthews church praise band now keeps me involved in music and I love it.�

While a student at the Healy University of Mississippi, he was encouraged by his father to take a vocational aptitude test to determine a career path. Healy’s family was in the funeral home business and Rusty wanted no part of it, so he agreed to test. “The test at Ole Miss scored insurance sales off the chart.� Healy said. “But my plan at the time was to be a rock star, so I didn’t think much of it. I thought I was too cool to be an insurance man.�

After playing a few years in various rock bands on the Memphis and Jackson music scenes, Healy ďŹ nally decided to enter the staid and steady world of insurance. He joined Nationwide’s agent development program in late 1989. Two years later, he opened his ďŹ rst office – a one room building that formerly housed a girls clothing boutique in the old Log Village development on Hwy. 51 in Ridgeland.

The walls were bright pink, Healy recalled. “It took three coats of paint to ďŹ nally get rid of it,â€? he said.

Insurance commissioner watching consumer issues

Vulnerable rural hospitals, surprise medical bills and emerging health insurance products are among the top issues the Mississippi Insurance Department is watching.

Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney, along with Bob Williams, who heads the department’s life and health actuarial division, briefed the attendees at the 22nd annual Health Link Managed Care Conference last Wednesday about evolving health insurance and access issues in the state.

“We try to protect the consumer,” Chaney said. “That’s our mission.”

Chaney is particularly concerned about the financial health of rural, independent hospitals.

“They serve a community that tends to be older, sicker and more dependent on public insurance programs than their urban counterparts,” Chaney said. Because of declining reimbursements and increasing costs, these hospitals are particularly vulnerable.

Five Mississippi hospitals have closed since 2010. Four hospitals, including Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory have filed for bankruptcy protection.

Among Mississippi’s 19 county-owned, independent hospitals, a state auditors report found that only five were considered in excellent or good financial health in 2016 fiscal year. The bulk of the troubled hospitals are concentrated in the Delta and Southwest Mississippi. If any of those rural hospitals close, it can be devastating for the community.

nomic driver in the community,” Chaney said.

It also can affect network adequacy requirements for insurers, potentially disrupting coverage across the state, Chaney said.

The insurance department also has been closely tracking regulatory developments on association health plans and short term plans. These plans are not subject to many Affordable Care Act requirements.

Chaney had been particularly concerned about how the plans would be regulated.

released in June revised and expanded the definitions to allow more small business and self-employed individuals to potentially benefit on the association plans and similar groups.

New federal rules and orders have opened these to oversight by states. The association plans will have to include safeguards similar to large employer health plans, Chaney said.

“You will not see them in Mississippi unless they are fully funded,” Chaney said.

“We want to be certain claims are going to be paid.”

With short term plans, it is important that consumers understand exactly what they are getting, Chaney said. These plans typically have limited if any coverage for pre-existing conditions, are not guaranteed issue and offer limited benefits and very narrow networks. However in a market where individual policies can be very difficult to purchase, they can serve a purpose, Chaney said.

There is an increasing frustration with surprise medical bills, Chaney said. There is a state law prohibiting balance billing, where a medical provider accepts insurance assignment but bills patients above and beyond their obligations. However, federal law doesn’t prohibit balance billing for self-funded health insurance plans, and there is bipartisan federal legislation in the pipeline to address the issue.

In Mississippi, air ambulance companies have been among the worst offenders, Chaney said, billing patients for tens of thousands of dollars over and above insurance payments. The insurance department has advocated successfully in about 60 cases.

Although air ambulance providers have argued they are not subject to Mississippi’s laws against balance billing, Chaney said he believes a case can be made that the medical services provided on board are in fact subject to state law.

There have also been problems with patients receiving bills from out-of-network providers when they’ve sought care at a hospital that is in their insurance network.

Emergency departments and radiology have been the biggest trouble spots.

“We’re going to take a pretty hard line,” Chaney said.

Nothing but long hours spent looking for and processing business,” Healy mused. “I didn’t take a vacation for five years. Honestly, my staff is a God thing. The right person has always been delivered at the right time.”

Healy says some positive changes could be in the offing for the insurance industry.

“Nationwide is allowing exclusive agents like me to evolve into independent agents so that we can take on other companies to represent,” he said.

“This is a very good opportunity, but will be a drastic change in the way we operate.”

Away from the insurance business, Healy invests his time in civic activities with the Madison Chamber of Commerce and Madison Lions Club.

He’s also involved in the Kairos Prison Ministry, an international program that incorporates curriculum designed to build “pro-social character and behavior” into the prison environment.

“We play music and have full-day retreats in five different Mississippi prisons, including Parchman and Central Mississippi,” Healy said. “It’s an opportunity for the participants to re-consider their life choices by changing their hearts. Kairos is transforming lives, and I’m happy to be a part of the experience.”

Dennis Meek, who owns Richland-based CPA firm Dennis Meek & Co., has known Healy for over a decade.

Both are heavily involved in the Kairos ministry.

“Rusty is one of those guys you want as a friend, a guy who truly wants to make a difference in the world,” said Meek. “We’ve worked many Kairos events together over the years, and he insures our (office) building. Whether he’s selling insurance, playing music or volunteering his time, Rusty gives his all.”

In his spare time, Healy enjoy tailgating weekends in the Grove at Ole Miss with his wife of 31 years, Ellen, and their two daughters, Nicole and Julia Leigh.

Despite all his success, Healy remains humble.

“I’m just a small-time ‘mom and pop’ (insurance) agency,” he said. “If a tree falls in your kitchen, I’m your man.”

#MeToo changed way brands market to men S ince the MeToo movement was born a year ago, brands are less afraid to have the conversation about what it really means to be a man.

The movement hasn’t changed the principles of marketing to men, which were already getting a second look and moving away from stereotypes, according to PRWeek Alyssa Garnick, senior partner of FleishmanHillard’s consumer and brand marketing practice.

As Lisa Rosenberg, Allison+Partners’ chief creative officer and consumer marketing co-chairwoman, puts it, male-focused marketing has always been more than just “cars, girls, and booze.”

Yet what the #MeToo movement has done is create opportunities for brands to join the conversation.

“The cultural forces of today are creating more opportunity for brands to talk to men not about how to live, but to support who you are as a man and what you stand for,” Garnick told PRWeek. “Brands that go beyond marketing to men, the ones that are involving and inspiring men, truly enabling men in their need for new expression and in their pursuit of excellence, are going to do well in this socially aware age.”

The Me Too movement has also given men’s brands “permission to look and feel different,” Rosenberg said.

Numerous brands are using the strategy.

Men’s clothing retailer Bonobos kicked off a campaign in July to #EvolveTheDefinition of the word “masculinity,” while Schick Hydro recently launched The Man I Am, a campaign with basketball star Kevin Love talking about positive masculinity. Early this year, men’s grooming brand Harry’s explored “what it really means to be a man” with its A Man Like You campaign.

Me Too “puts the wind behind the sales” of a brand such as Bonobos that believes in “evolved masculinity,” Amia Lazarus, head of strategy and entertainment consulting at Observatory Marketing, which works with the retailer.

Bonobos’ first reaction to #MeToo was to quickly huddle with Observatory to discuss how it should communicate with its core consumer group in the wake of the global movement, especially in a way that didn’t make the brand look like it was jumping on the bandwagon, according to PRWeek. Yet Bonobos didn’t have to drastically change its marketing strategy, says Lazarus. It had previously launched a campaign showing its commitment to celebrating a spectrum of masculinity.

Bonobos’ #EvolveTheDefinition campaign included a 90-second video made from 172 interviews about how respondents define masculinity including alternative interpretations that expand the definition to become more accepting. Too. The #EvolveTheDefinition video appeared on the YouTube masthead, and Bonobos ran a promoted trending tweet, culminating in a national broadcast premier during The ESPYs on ABC in July.

It was the second-most-watched ad that month on YouTube, garnering more than 400 million video impressions. Bonobos also saw a 54 percent surge in daily average web traffic to its site in a two-week timeline. There was a five-time increase in orders and four-time increase in new users.

Of the men who saw the ad, 83 percent said they felt more favorable towards the brand after viewing it, says Lazarus.

Meanwhile, Unilever brand Dove Men+Care is challenging stereotypes about men as caregivers. Its social mission, Dear Future Dads, launched on Father’s Day and champions paternity leave, drawing from its desire to spark a cultural movement on the topic.

Championing modern masculinity is nothing new for Dove Men+Care, which launched in 2010, Nick Soukas, vice president of Skin Cleansing and Baby Care for Unilever, told PRWeek.

“Given the current political and social climate, we as a brand believe that actions are more important than words, and as such, we have not shifted course but are committed to continuing to listening to our consumers on an ongoing basis and celebrating them for who they truly are.”

Dove Men+Care does not want to coopt other movements, Soukas says, but rather outwardly support healthy notions of masculinity in its marketing in light of the cultural conversation.

The changing conversation about marketing to men is taking place as brands are thinking about how to be more social responsible, experts said.

However, they warn that companies can’t rely on marketing dollars to change a conversation; the effort must be authentic.

Mobile ad spending could surge past $110B by 2020 American adults could spend more time on mobile devices than watching TV for the first time in 2019, according to a recent eMarketer study. The firm also recently estimated that mobile ad spending in the U.S. will surpass TV ad spending by more than $6 billion this year, and that figure could surge to $113.2 billion by 2020, accounting for 43 percent of all media ad spending in the U.S. That would be great news for Facebook and Alphabet subsidiary Google, which together could control 55.9 percent of the U.S. digital ad market in 2020, according to eMarketer. Google doesn’t disclose how much of its ad revenue comes from mobile ads, but Facebook reported that mobile ads accounted for 91 percent of its total adver-

tising revenue last quarter.

Yet the growth of mobile ads could hurt traditional ad agencies such as WPP, the global advertising giant that has struggled in the age of Google, Facebook, and other digital ad platforms. It could also spell trouble for traditional TV networks, which rely heavily on ad revenue and are already struggling with cord cutting.

Instagram pins hopes on Promote ads Instagram hopes dollars from small businesses and social media influencers can help it bolster ad revenue in the Facebook family.

A new ad type called “Promote” for Stories allows Instagram business pages to show their fleeting slideshows to more users without doing much work. Admins can choose to auto-target users similar to their followers, people in a certain location, or use all of Instagram’s targeting parameters to inject their Story into the Stories queue of more users as an ad that can also link to business’ Instagram profile or website.

Instagram confirmed to TechCrunch that Promote for Stories works similarly to Facebook’s Boost option that lets them pay to instantly show their feed posts to more users.

Instagram already has 2 million active advertisers, compared to Facebook’s 6 million. However, designing and targeting ads – especially full-screen video Stories ads – can be daunting to small businesses and public folks. Promote offers an easy way to turn their existing Stories into ads.

The feature could unlock more spend at a crucial time when Facebook’s revenue growth is in massive decline. It dropped from 59 percent in the third quarter of 2016 to 49 percent in Q3 2017 to 33 percent in Q3 2018 as it tops out in lucrative developed countries and runs out of News Feed space.

Facebook has warned Wall Street about revenue deceleration, as sharing shifts from feeds to Stories and advertisers have

to adapt, but turning local merchants and Todd Smith influencers into paying customers could smooth that transition.

Strikeout Mic | World Series ratings down 23 percent from 2017 A World Series featuring the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers was expected to pull in major ratings numbers for Fox, but it didn’t turn out that way.

According to Variety, an average of 14.3 million viewers watched over five World Series games, a 23 percent drop from the 18.7 million that watched the 2017 World Series. And 2018’s numbers are a staggering 38 percent decrease from the 2016 World Series, which averaged 22.9 million viewers and was the most watched since series 2005. Out of every World Series since 2010, the 2018 version was the fourthleast watched.

Game 5 was by far the biggest ratings-getter of any World Series game this year. But, none of the first four games averaged more than 13.8 million viewers, while Game 5 averaged 17.6 million. Those numbers don’t include viewership from Fox Deportes and Fox’s streaming platforms, and when those numbers are added, Game 5 viewership comes in at 18.5 million. That handily beat NBC’s Sunday Night Football, but it pales to 2017’s final game (which, to be objective, was a Game 7 and not a Game 5), which pulled in over 28 million viewers.

It appears the World Series was a strikeout to a sports saturated – and perhaps football starved – audience.
