Najla Kayyem of Pacific Retail Partners of El Segundo, Calif. said the $50 million figure is not correct but did not say how far off it is, adding that the company is “pretty close” to

making an announcement.

Pacific Retail bought the mall built in 1984 from Simon Properties in September 2016.

Kayyem said in June that Pacific Retail would reveal its plans in July.

Paddlewheeler tours on Coast

Vicksburg mayor considering 2019 run for Mississippi lieutenant governor

On his last day working as a Mississippi River boat captain, Michael White talked about his next career move — taking the helm of a paddle wheeler he’s bringing to the Mississippi coast this month.

White and his wife, Dayna, both Gulfport natives, are the new owners of the Betsy Ann, a 85-foot stern-wheel paddlewheeler that will take passengers on cruises out of Biloxi. “It’s a replica of the original Betsy Ann built in 1899. It was one of the first steel-hulled paddlewheelers on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers,” he said.

White previously owned the Lucky Duck amphibious boat tours, which took passengers on land and water tours along the Biloxi coastline. Eleven months into the successful venture, Hurricane Katrina hit, and recovery from the 2005 storm was too slow for White to wait it out. “I sold it and had to go back to running boats again,” he said.

A friend in the Biloxi tourism market recently convinced White that the time was finally right for him to return. “He said you need to bring that boat back. The coast is back,” White said.

He started researching boats for sale but the price of a new amphibious vessel was out of reach. White kept looking and found the paddle wheeler in Panama City, Fla., four hours from the Coast. “I told my wife, we’ve got to take a look at this thing.”

The Whites met the boat’s owner and went for a ride on the Betsy Ann. Before long, a deal was struck. “I fell in love with it, and knew this is what I was meant to do,” he said.

By coincidence, Dayna White discovered through her interest in genealogy that generations ago, her relatives and her husband’s both were captains on paddlewheelers on the Mississippi. “That was before we found our paddlewheel boat. We said it’s destiny. We were destined to own the Betsy and keep this memory alive,” he said.

The Whites, who live in Diamondhead, plan to pick up the boat and take it to a shipyard in Mobile for a Coast Guard inspection. Then they will head to the coast around Nov. 17 where they will dock at the Bay St. Louis harbor and the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club. “We want to show it off and do a little trip for friends and family and the local businesses. After that, we’ll start working our way to Biloxi.” When all the permits and licensing are taken care of, the cruises are expected to start the first week of December.

White will do double duty as tour guide, sharing the history of the seafood industry, the barrier islands and Mississippi Sound with an emphasis on coastal ecology. “There is so much rich culture and history here,” he said. “But I’m not going to talk the whole time.” He wants his guests to enjoy hearing the paddle wheel slapping on the water and taking in the scenic coastline. On sunset cruises passengers will have an unobstructed view over the water. “The bottlenose dolphin and the brown pelican are always an added highlight to the cruise,” he said.

They also plan to book private parties with up to 150 guests for birthdays and holidays, convention groups and wedding. The covered open deck upstairs has seats that convert into picnic tables. The downstairs salon can seat up to 80 passengers.

“It can be a year-round attraction, with heated and cooled space downstairs. You can get on the water any time of year.”

There’s no galley aboard so the meals will be catered, he said.

The Whites already have booked one private party and another is in the works.

Prices will be $22 per person, $20 for active duty military and seniors and $17 for children 3 to 12 years old. School field trips prices will $17 for adults and $12 for students with a minimum of 20 passengers.

Private charters begin at $700. “My main focus is to bring something to the coast that everybody can enjoy but afford it,” he said.

White’s love of boats and being on the water led him to join the Navy but instead of driving a boat, he was assigned to advanced electronics. After his service, he became one of the first employees at Gateway, the computer hardware company founded on a farm in Iowa. After a while, and with another midwestern winter approaching, he told his boss, Gateway founder Ted Waitt, that he was leaving his job in corporate sales to move back home. “My whole life I wanted to be a boat captain. I left a Fortune 500 company in my late 20s to come down here and get my captain’s license,” he said.

White captained boats out in the Gulf oil fields for years and then moved to inland tugs about six years ago to have more time with his family. He later worked as harbormaster at Beau Rivage, which is when he met families visiting the coast who wanted to get out on the water for short trips that cost less than charters. “I saw the need for family oriented fun that didn’t cost an arm and a leg,” he said. That’s when he decided to start the Lucky Duck amphibious tour business that Katrina cut short.

Now, with the coast in advanced recovery mode, he’s back in the tour business. “I said I was going to do it again when the coast recovered. This is it.”

A Democratic mayor says he is considering running for Mississippi lieutenant governor, and he might cross party lines.

Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said Tuesday that he will decide in the next six months whether to seek the state’s second-highest office in 2019.

Flaggs told The Associated Press that he has not ruled out Flaggs running as a Republican.

He served as a Democrat in the Mississippi House from 1988 until he was elected mayor of his hometown in 2013.

The 64-year-old Flaggs said he wants to line up at least $2 million in support and will commission statewide polling before deciding whether to run for lieutenant governor.

The current lieutenant governor, Republican Tate Reeves, is in his second term and can’t run again.

Enclosed malls in general have a bleak future, according to experts, such as Credit Suisse, which predicted earlier this year that within five years 25 percent of them would be closed.

Jan Kniffen, chief executive of J. Rogers Kniffen Worldwide Enterprises LLC, an equity research and financial consulting firm for the retail sector, told the Journal in June that of the number of U.S. malls, between 1,000 and 1,200, about 400 would be either closed or restructured by 2030.

Kniffen said that mall foot traffic is dropping by 6 to 8 percent a year.

An alternative to closing will be to reinvent them, he said.

“What everyone wants to do is make their shopping malls more experiential.

You want to put things in [them] that can’t be done on the Internet,” ranging from hair salons to restaurants to “sky-diving tubes.”

The release from Retail Specialists, which was short on details, said the makeover would include “new entertainment, restaurants and retailers.”

By JACK WEATHERLY jack.weatherly@msbusiness.com The District at Eastover had for several years touted a nine-screen luxury movie theater featuring as one of its assets in the mixed-use development in north Jackson.

But developers Breck Hines and Ted Duckworth found that the rent was too high for theater chains, Hines said in an interview Monday.

So no theater with reclining chairs, good food and perhaps a bar.

The $12 million theater priced itself out of the 125,000-square-foot development, Hines said.

Put simply, the developers couldn’t find a movie house that afford the rent at the upscale Eastover, Hines said.

The “higher and better use” of the space would be a multi-story building, he said.

Asked why floors couldn’t be added

above the theater, Hines said that the combined use would price the office space out of the local market.

The movie theater industry is somewhat at the mercy of the millenial generation, whose propensity to turn to streaming video has shaken up the movie market.

The mixed-use hallmark is a balance of amenities in one place, but instead of dinner and a movie at Eastover, film-goers will have to drive to Ridgeland, Madison, Flowood or Pearl to catch a movie.

And in 2016, Regal Entertainment Group, the nation’s largest movie house chain, said it was not intending to renew the lease for the Northpark 14 theater in Ridgeland. Efforts to contact Regal for this article were unsuccessful.

There are no movie houses in Jackson.

As recently as January 2016, Duckworth was touting the nine-screener.

The District Lofts apartments, said he was “relieved” that the theater will not be built because of the parking needed for it.

The 261-unit has only 74 available, Holcombe said. Preleasing started March 1.

“We’re moving really fast,” Holcombe said. “We are way ahead, by four or five months.”

But while the District at Eastover won’t be offering the “two-fer” movie house, it has announced a trending concept of a different sort.

A “food hall” will be installed on the ground floor of the BankPlus building.

The 8,000-foot-square space, with indoor and outdoor seating, will open in the spring with a “carefully curated collection of local, boutique restaurant concepts,” the District said in a release.

Eastover Market is being developed with consultation from the St. Roch Market in New Orleans, which Travel and Leisure called “one of the world’s best food halls.”

Will Donaldson, co-owner of St. Roch Market, said in a prepared statement that the food hall is “a rare opportunity to be able to interact directly with a chef.”

Hines said that “when it came to a consulting partner in developing Eastover Market, St. Roch was an obvious choice.”

Including Eastover Market, retail space is 65 percent to 70 percent committed, Hines said.

An unnamed health and wellness center will go in next to the food hall, Hines said.

Four previously named tenants will open next month, Hines said.

Spectacles, an optometrical and eyeglasses store, will move from Highland Village; it will be joined by Orangetheory Fitness; Freshii, which specializes in organic food, including wraps, and Fine & Dandy, which will offer upscale hamburgers, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails.

Put the spotlight on big business to grow U.S. jobs

P

resident Trump and Republican leaders in Congress should add one small thing to the tax reform bill to truly help make America great again.

In case you haven’t noticed, corporate earnings are driving the stock market to record highs. Across the board, earnings are up; earnings are strong.

When the corporate tax cut House Republican leaders revealed last week hits and knocks rates from 35 percent to 20 percent or so, earnings will go up even more. (Many think the market is up in anticipation of this earnings bump.)

Of course, one of the ways big business has maximized earnings, and thereby stock valuations, has been through employee layoffs and offshoring jobs to foreign countries.

Major companies with big layoffs in 2017 included Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Nike, Lowe’s, Union Pacific, Caterpillar, Hershey, Kellogg, State Farm, Oracle, Macy’s, J.C. Penney, and more.

Major companies that rely on offshoring jobs include Apple, Wal-Mart, Nike, IBM, and Cisco.

Now, big business is licking its chops over a new way to dump jobs and pump up earnings.

begun,” Bloomberg Businessweek reported in September. “JPMorgan Chase & Co. is rolling out a program called LOXM that executes equities trades so well, it’s replacing the humans who used to do that.” The article added that Management consultant Opimas LLC predicts “90,000 people in asset management will be replaced by machines by 2025.”

“The forces that trump all others are human capital and technology, man and machine, and we’re at an inflection point with them, in the midst of a structural change that will impact the labor market globally,” Vanguard’s chief economist Joe Davis said at Morningstar’s annual ETF conference last month. “The trend that will define our lives is how work changes for all of us. I can’t think of a more seminal issue that will face the economy in the years ahead.”

In reporting Davis’ comments, MarketWatch noted that the impact of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) could be massive, particularly as new technologies—such as driverless cars and “bot” programs that can mimic human speech patterns—mature and disrupt ever-larger segments of the economy. ulf Coast Business Council Board President John Hairston had some sobering news for Coast leaders: We're flat not growing.

Hairston, president and CEO of Hancock Holding, and the Council presented a raft of data to back up that assessment, and a plan to end the economic malaise on the Mississippi Coast.

The cause is fairly simple: The Coast has yet to recover from the double whammy of Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil disaster "We're carrying two concrete bags around our legs trying to run the hurdles," Hairston said. "The answer isn't to lower the hurdle. The answer is to have more people running."

And so the Council wants to draw the best in the business together to publicly hash out "how we execute plans that return us to what was a very prosperous economy prior to Katrina."

"And don't stop there," Hairston said. "Let's realize our maximum potential."

We urge the Coast to answer the Council's call.

Early results are encouraging. More than 450 people showed up for the meeting Tuesday at the IP Casino Resort and Spa to listen to the numbers and the call to action. And it wasn't just business people.

There were people from schools and social services as well.

The Coast has a lot going for it. The tourism economy is healthy. Its schools are performing well. And infrastructure, from buildings to roads to water and sewer, is practically brand new.

"The next chore is to make sure we leverage all those assets to create employment," Hairston said.

Jobs are the one thing that's missing. A study by the Trent Lott National Center at the University of Southern Mississippi found there are about 8 percent fewer jobs on the Coast now compared to the pre-Katrina days where the economy was taking off.

We agree with Hairston and the Council that it will take the Coast working together. Anything that helps one community will eventually help the whole Coast.

The Coast has a regional tourism council, for example, which has paid off. "The tourism numbers are the brightest spot we have," Hairston said, "because we have Coastwide focus on them."

He envisions the same kind of open-minded forum to discuss employment issues.

The first test will be if such a forum can find a way to spend the BP windfall to measurably boost the economy and create good paying jobs.

We, like Hairston and the Council, favor getting that money out of the hands of the Legislature and into the hands of a transparently operating group on the Coast.

We know job growth and economic revival won't come overnight and we'll help the Council keep the focus on creating jobs for the next decade, and the next and the next.

cent research claiming that every industrial robot takes up to six jobs, with some six million jobs at risk of being lost to automation over the coming decade.

“Tech is always moving faster and getting smarter,” said Davis. “Work has always been an arms race between education and technology, but the pace of change, and the scale of the change, are different this time.”

In October, CBS Money Watch reported as many as 10 million U.S. jobs could disappear “as companies deploy machines that can learn and perform tasks.” Jobs at risk included cooks, cleaners, movers, truckers, nurses, and retail sales.

Disappearing jobs, layoffs, and offshoring will not make America great again. More and better jobs will.

So, the simple thing President Trump and Republican leaders in Congress should add to the tax cut bill is this – require public corporations to announce their U.S. based job totals at the same time they announce earnings each quarter.

Put the spotlight on big business so Americans can easily see if the tax cut really does grow U.S. jobs, not just earnings.

No hiding state’s economic weakness

L

et’s make this simple — Mississippi’s economy is weak and shows few signs of growing stronger.

This is a state where total economic output in 2016 still was lower than in 2008, before the recession.

Not coincidentally, it’s a state where employers had fewer workers on their payrolls in September 2017 than in February 2008. And that 2008 peak came after jobs tumbled during a three-year recession in the early 2000s. Mississippi hasn’t seen truly strong growth since the 1990s, when the casino boom pushed the state’s growth rate ahead of the national economy in some years.

And after a decade when the Magnolia State economy — at best — has treaded water, it shouldn’t be surprising that people are bailing out. Census estimates show that nearly 10,000 more American-born people left the state than moved here from July 2015 to July 2016, offset a little by the roughly 2,000 people who moved to Mississippi from a foreign country.

If Mississippi had been an average Southern state, it would have added 10,000 people from other states. Combined with an above-average death rate, outmigration explains why the state has lost population for two years in a row.

Among those who are leaving? Young people with college degrees whom Mississippi taxpayers have helped pay to educate. Between 2000 and 2015, Census figures show that Mississippi had the highest emigration rates in the South for people younger than 40 with a college degree, according to a New York Times analysis. Alabama was the only other Southern state where more young college-educated people left than moved in.

According to a report prepared last year for the College Board, only a little more than half of the graduates of Mississippi’s eight public universities are working in the state five years after graduation.

Credit here to state economist Darren Webb. He’s been delivering this message for years.

“Our recovery following the Great Recession has been one of the worst in the nation,” he told lawmakers last week, delivering what could have been the same talk he’s given in any of the last five years.

Webb did have some bad news specific to 2017. The bump in state tax collections that officials have bragged about in recent months? It appears illusory, the result mostly of onetime releases of money from agencies into state coffers.

Estimators predict another year of flat state tax revenue in 2018-19.

State spending this year, about $6 billion, is roughly $800 million behind where it would have been if spending had kept pace with inflation since 2010. That would be enough money to cover Mississippi’s road and bridge needs, increase state K-12 spending to levels called for by the state school funding formula, and have money left over.

Some of that shortfall stems from hundreds of millions in tax cuts, what Webb called “lost revenue due to legislative changes.”

The thinking when those taxes were cut seemed to be that state revenue would still grow, just at a slower pace. At least

one legislative leader appears to be moving the goalposts, with Lt. Gov. Tate Jeff Amy Reeves hailing stagnant revenue as a triumph.

“For us to have enacted the largest tax cut in Mississippi history and still expect that we’re actually going to collect flat revenue year-over-year, I think says an awful lot about the direction that we’re trying to send our government in being fiscally responsible and fiscally prudent,” the Republican Reeves said last week.

Escape rooms can be more than entertainment when used for team building

By BECKY GILLETTE mbj@msbusiness.com The first escape rooms in Mississippi opened about two years ago, and have spread around the state. They are proving successful enough that two new escape rooms are being planned in the Jackson area, including one that will have a focus on team-building for companies.

Escape rooms are a game where participants are locked into a room and players work together to find clues and figure out puzzles. The idea is to find the key that opens the door before the time is up, which is usually an hour. Several escape room owners contacted by the Mississippi Business Journal said they have quite a few business customers who are interested in using the escape rooms for team building exercises.

A new escape room business will open in early December in Suite 270 at the Outlets of Mississippi in Pearl. Mark Stevens, owner of Paradox Challenge Rooms, said that traditional escape rooms provide a great environment for “team fun” which can help with morale in general. But he said they can also be more than that.

“What is often missing is taking advantage of the unique ‘team problem solving’ situation to highlight issues related specifically to communication and cooperation,” said Stevens, who also operates Paradox Challenge and Escape Rooms in Tupelo and Florence, Ala. “What we are doing at Paradox is taking the next step to make those lessons clearer and more actionable when they return to the work place. In the past, we have done that with post-game talks and those worked well. However, we believe we can improve on that substantially.”

vens said there are two unique aspects of this that relate to corporate team building.

The first is that it allows groups to divide into two teams that can compete for time or have to cooperate through some form of restricted communication.

“The second is that it is designed to support multiple episodes, so we can use it to highlight different lessons we want to teach or just provide a second experience to practice what they learned in the first one,” Stevens said. “While this is a fun game for anyone, it was designed specifically to support the team problem-solving sessions we will be offering to businesses.

It is our intent to focus considerable effort on corporate training sessions. We expect it to be a substantial part of our business, especially during typical work week hours.”

Paulina and Clint Sistrunk opened JXN Escape Room in January 2016. They have found also found interest in being used by businesses as a team-building activity.

“We have a lot of companies who bring employees here,” Paulina Sistrunk said.

JXN Escape Room is located on Foley St. in an old weather station, and the couple plans to open a second escape room, Interlock Tours, in late December or early January on 6718 Old Canton Road, Ridgeland.

“If you are tired of going to the movies or a restaurant, it is fun and something different to do for an outing with a group of friends or co-workers,” Paulina Sistrunk said. “It involves some creative and critical thinking, teamwork and communication.

It is something that requires you to use your brain.”

Sistrunk said the old weather station has a “bit of a vibe,” and houses three different room scenarios—a cellar, a historical room, and spaceship room. They change up rooms occasionally order to keep it fresh and attract repeat customers.

Are escape rooms a sustainable phenomenon or a fad? Sistrunk said they think escape rooms have the potential to be a long-lived if kept fresh and interesting.

“That is what we are trying in the new location,” she said. “We have some interesting themes and designs. You can buy escape room games. We do not. We create all of our rooms ourselves. There will be more technology in our new rooms that will make it that much more exciting. So, we hope that will make it more sustainable. We continue to get new customers.

Even with rooms we’ve had for some time, there is lot of life in them.”

Businesses are also frequently customers of Deadbolt Escape Rooms in Tupelo owned by brothers Shawn and Jason Brannon.

“We have cameras and microphones in all our rooms so we can see and hear what is being done in all the rooms,” Jason Brannon said. “Employers can watch and see who works together well and who doesn’t, who takes on leadership

functions, and who doesn’t. They can determine who is engaged and who is not.

You get to watch employees in a different setting.”

Brannon said they periodically change rooms out and do something new. Around Halloween the tomb room was very popular. They have five rooms and will soon have six. They have 792 total reviews on Facebook with 767 giving them five stars.

While there are companies who sell escape room ideas, the Brannons pride themselves in writing their own stories, themes and puzzles.

“It is all home grown,” Brannon said.

“This started as a sort of a weekend job, but we have grown from three rooms to six. Now this is our job. This is what we do. I’m a freelance writer on the side. I

have published a lot, fiction wise, so I found the story lines easy to do based on what I do.”

He isn’t concerned that escape rooms are a fad.

“It is on to us to make sure it stays fresh,” Brannon said. “We have to anticipate where this is going and think outside the box to do things people enjoy. We get a lot of school groups, church groups and birthday parties, big groups that we didn’t expect when we started it.”

Kody Liston opened College Town Escape Rooms in Hattiesburg in April 2016 during his first semester at the University of Southern Mississippi business college.

“It is very enthralling,” Liston said. “It is like going to the movie, but you are almost in the movie. Instead of just sitting there watching, you are participating. It really requires teamwork to be successful in the hour mark you have to complete it.”

Liston said they do a lot of team building corporate events.

When Liston started the business, he drew up a business plan to seek investors.

Because he was so young, a lot of people didn’t take him seriously. But he started turning a profit after one year and has repaid the original loan.

“It has really worked out,” he said. “We love what we do. We design all our scenarios inhouse. We don’t buy puzzles from any company elsewhere.”

Health spending a priority for local businesses

With the dawning of November, most people’s attentions are turning toward the holidays, but for business owners, there’s the standard end-of-the-year checklist that must be addressed. From financial statements to plans for the new year, this time of the year can become a season

of tying up loose ends. One thing you shouldn’t forget is health insurance plans for 2018.

This year all businesses will see some changes in the new year, particularly in regards to cost-sharing limits and healthcare flexible spending account contribution limits. Cost-sharing limits, or out-of-pocket maximums, will increase from $6,600 to $6,850 for self-only

plans and from $13,200 to $13,700 for all other plans. FSA limits will increase from $2,600 to $2,650. The good news is that Pam Files, senior vice president and employee benefits insurance consultant at Fisher Brown Bottrell Insurance, said there is not expected to be cost increases for employers.

employees in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, will be subject to coverage affordability percentages, maximum penalties for failure to comply with the ACA, and reporting violations.

“Under the ACA’s employer-shared responsibility rules, applicable large employers are required to offer affordable, minimum value health coverage to their full-time employees — and dependent children — or pay a penalty,” Files said.

“Employer-shared responsibility requirements are also known as the ‘employer mandate’ or ‘pay or play’ rules.”

Large employers will be subject to penalties if one or more full-time employees receive a subsidy for purchasing health coverage through the ACA Exchange. An individual may be eligible for an Exchange subsidy if the applicable large employers: does not offer coverage to that individual; or offers coverage that is “unaffordable” or does not provide “minimum value.” Files said there are many steps and methods for the employer penalty calculation, offering of coverage to full-time employees, determination of a full-time employee, assessing affordability and reporting of coverage.

Another major change comes from the IRS for the upcoming tax season for those without health insurance. For the 2018 tax filing season, where 2017 tax returns are being filed, the IRS won’t accept electronically filed tax returns where the taxpayer does not certify whether the individual had health insurance for the year. Paper returns in which the taxpayer does not certify compliance with the individual mandate may be suspended pending receipt of additional information, and refunds may be delayed.

The self-employed may face the biggest change as the period for open enrollment decreases from three months to just six weeks. In previous years, open enrollment has run from Nov. 1 to Jan. 31. This year, open enrollment will close on Dec. 15.

This will only affect those who do not utilize group insurance plans. Group insurance plans will renew at varying times as recognized by the carrier. Files said carrier renewal requirements are 60 days prior to the renewal date.

For small businesses that utilized the ONE MISSISSIPPI Shop Plan through the marketplace, other arrangements will need to be made because the one carrier that participated, United Healthcare, will not be available for 2018.

In Mississippi, the ACA marketplace has only one carrier participating this year — Ambetter of Magnolia. Various other carriers offer individual plans that can be accessed directly through the carrier or appointed insurance brokers. Newsmakers Reunion’s Basel is top pro Tim Basel, head golf professional at Reunion Golf & Country Club in Madison has been named the Gulf States PGA Professional of the Year for 2017.

The Gulf States PGA section is composed of Mississippi and Louisiana.

The Gulf States PGA Professional of the Year honor is Basel awarded to a PGA member for overall performance as a golf professional at his/her facility, level of service to the Section and Association, leadership ability, image and the ability to inspire fellow professionals, and the promotion of golf.

Basel is a graduate of Mississippi State University’s Professional Golf Management (PGM) program in 1998 and has been a member of the PGA since 2000.

He has been a Gulf States PGA board member since 2014 and served as president of the Gulf States PGA Mississippi Chapter in 2016/2017.

Throughout his 19-plus year career in the golf industry, Basel has received numerous PGA Section and Chapter awards, including 2003 GSPGA Assistant of the Year, 2008 GSPGA MS Chapter Assistant of the Year, 2010 GSPGA MS Chapter Assistant of the Year, 2015 GSPGA MS Chapter Golf Professional of the Year, and 2016 GSPGA MS Chapter Golf Professional of the Year.

Michael McPhail has recently been promoted to Assistant Vice President at Community Bank, Ellisville. McPhail joined the bank in 2016 as a loan officer. In his new role, he will manage a portfolio, focusing on growing loans and deposits in the Hattiesburg market.

Jim Coll, Chief Communication Officer at The University of Southern Mississippi, has been honored by the Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF) as a Senior Practitioner. Morgan joins Bryan Nelson

Chase Ford Morgan has joined the offices of Bryan Nelson P.A. She will practice primarily out of the firm’s West Hattiesburg.

Morgan specializes in family law and also concentrates on wills and estates, guardianship and conservatorships, expungement, Morgan and mediation services.

Morgan received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in International Business from University of Southern Mississippi in December 2004 and graduated with highest honors.

Morgan attended The University of Mississippi School of Law and was a member of the Moot Court Board, the National Moot Court Competition Team and the Gibbon Criminal Procedure Moot Court Competition Team. She also received the Herbert E. Dewees, Jr. and Timothy L. Walsh National Moot Court Competition Award (2009), and was the winner of the 2007 Moot Court Board Appellate Advocacy Competition She earned her Juris Doctor from The University of Mississippi and was admitted to the Mississippi Bar in 2009. Morgan was selected as a National Member of the Order of Barristers in 2010. In 2014, Morgan was selected as Top 10 Under 40 in Mississippi by the National Academy of Family Law Attorneys. For the past several years, Morgan has been on the Family Law Section Committee of the Mississippi Bar Association and recently completed an annual term as serving as the Chair of the Family Law Section Committee. She is Member-at-Large for the South Central Mississippi Bar Association.

She is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association, the Women’s Lawyer Alliance, the South Central Mississippi Bar Association, and the Hattiesburg Area Young Lawyers Association.

Paratransit operator is best

Dan Reid, a non-emergency transportation services operator, has been named the 2017 Paratransit & Contracting Operator of the Year by the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association (TLPA).

Reid is co-owner and president of Grove Transit in Hattiesburg.

Reid Reid, formerly a business consultant for mergers and acquisitions, bought out a failing transportation company seven years ago. Since then, he has turned Grove Transit into a community asset, including serving an on-demand market in the area. The company works to always have the latest technology to ensure the safety of passengers, and is a pillar of the community, working alongside many local nonprofits and community-based groups.

Woods, Mayfield earn CFA

Travis Woods, employee of W.O. Stone Advisors Inc., in Jackson, and Owen Mayfield, a managing member of Spectre Capital, have earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. They are the only two new charterholders in the CFA Mississippi chapter to be recognized at an Oct. 10 event.

The National Park Service recently presented the agency’s prestigious Director’s Centennial Award to Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area and Delta Center for Culture and Learning at Delta State University for their work establishing the Delta Jewels Oral History Partnership in Mississippi. The partners collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and author Alysia Burton Steele in a yearlong initiative through Spring 2016 to host community engagement activities featuring oral histories and stories of African-American church mothers in the Mississippi Delta. Recipients of the CFA charter have successfully completed the CFA Program, a graduate-level, self-study curriculum and a series of three intensive examinations taken sequentially, which, in total, takes most candidates between two and five years.

Candidate surveys report that preparation for the three exams typically requires at least 900 combined hours of study.

Vizzier-Thaxton in HOF The 2017 Mississippi Poultry Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. Yvonne Vizzier-Thaxton, is the first female member and completes the first husband and wife team in the Hall of Fame.

The Mississippi Poultry Hall of Fame was created in 1972 to recognize the contributions of Vizzier-Thaxton those who built and expanded the poultry industry into Mississippi’s largest agricultural industry. Vizzier-Thaxton, former head of the Mississippi State University Poultry Science Department, retired recently from the Center for Animal Wellbeing at the University of Arkansas and returned to the Jackson area.

She earned a B.S. and M.S. from Mississippi University for Women and her Ph.D. from Auburn University in poultry pathology. She was married to the late Dr. Paul Thaxton, an MSU professor and pioneer in vaccination technology. She is president of the Southern and American Poultry Science Associations, and is on the advisory board for the American Humane Association. She was the first female chair of the Mississippi Poultry Association board in 1992.

Community promotes Hill Mitchell Hill has recently been promoted to Executive Vice President at Community Bank, North Mississippi. A native of Indianola, Hill will continue growing loans and deposits, along with his management responsibilities.

Hill serves on the Indianola Academy Executive Board, and the local Rotary Club.

Hill is a graduate of Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Economics.

Fake news hurts trust in media, especially social

C

ontroversies over fake news have damaged trust in media in the United States and elsewhere, but the impact is far worse for social media and online-only outlets than it is for traditional print and TV outlets, a survey has found.

The research and data company Kantar, in a survey of 8,000 people in the United States, Brazil, Britain and France, found that newspapers, magazines and TV news outlets had retained a greater measure of public trust than digital specialists had.

In the United States, mainstream media have reported on the online spread of fabricated stories aimed at helping Donald Trump win the presidency last year. Meanwhile, Trump has accused the mainstream media itself of producing fake news.

Overall, 58 percent of those surveyed said that as a result of becoming aware of fake news they had less trust in social media news stories about politics or elections.

For mainstream media, the figure was 24 percent.

The survey drew a link between depth of coverage and trust levels. The findings showed that a much higher proportion of people rated magazines, TV news channels, radio and newspapers highly for indepth commentary and analysis, than did so for social media news.

Kantar said its analysis showed usage of the expression “fake news” had surged in mainstream news around the time of the U.S. presidential election in November 2016, and had peaked on Trump’s first day in office in January this year.

Information disorder on rise report finds A new report published by First Draft, a project of the Shorenstein Center, examines how dis-information campaigns have become widespread and, heavily relying on social media, contribute to a global media environment of information disorder.

The report is a comprehensive analysis of information disorder and its related challenges, such as filter bubbles and echo chambers, and provides a framework for dialogue that can be used by policymakers and researchers. It contains 34 recommendations for stakeholders such as technology companies, media, national governments, civil society, and educational agencies to help them identify strategies to address the problem.

The report was written by Dr. Claire Wardle, research fellow at the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and Hossein Derakhshan, executive director of First Draft, and writer and researcher.

“What we are witnessing is something completely new: disinformation campaigns, often playing with people’s emo-

tions, spreading at great speed, with a potential to have an enormous impact on society,” said Wardle. “To fight misinformation, simply pushing out more factual information, without understanding the emotional and ritualistic elements of communication, could be a complete waste of time.”

Key findings of the report: » There are three different types of “information disorder”: – Mis-information, when false information is shared, but no harm is meant; – Dis-information, when false information is knowingly shared to cause harm; – Mal-information, when genuine information is shared to cause harm, often by making public information designed to stay private.’ » There is a complex web of motivations for creating, disseminating, and consuming “polluted” messages.

– Political: Some see disinformation as a tool to mobilize action and behavior change.

– Financial: Fabricated “news” sites may create lucrative opportunities.

– Psychological: Some who create and share misinformation are seeking prestige or reinforcement.

– Social: Some are motivated by a desire to connect with others around a shared group identity or worldview. » There are myriad content types and techniques for amplifying content: – Messages that are most shared evoke an emotional response, have a powerful visual element and strong narrative, and are repeated.

– Algorithms that favor images and video have the potential to reach more users than articles or text posts—regardless of veracity.

– Visuals are overwhelmingly the most shared pieces of disinformation and are the most difficult to debunk. » There are innumerable platforms hosting and reproducing this content: – Seeing the same message many times across platforms makes users more likely to believe it to be true.

– Sharing information on social networks allows people to “perform” their identities with others who share their worldviews.

– Filter bubbles keep opposing viewpoints out of social media feeds. If platforms changed their algorithms to provide users with more challenging material, people would likely spend less time on them.

» The long-term implications of disinformation campaigns designed to sow mistrust and confusion and to sharpen socio-cultural divisions using existing nationalistic, ethnic, racial, and religious tensions are concerning. » There is a risk that in the near future, audiences may have little trust in the information they find online.

The report also provides a round up of related research and practical initiatives, and stresses the need for additional research, including about the way humans make sense of and use information in their lives.

Outfoxed Mic: The Fox & The Mouse Walt Disney has been talking with 21st Century Fox to purchase a large piece of its entertainment businesses, signaling that Disney is serious about bolstering its sagging TV operations and that media mogul Rupert Murdoch is open to a surprising restructuring of his empire.

Disney approached Fox about buying its cable TV networks such as FX and National Geographic Channel, the Twentieth Century Fox studio and international-distribution operations, which would have left 21st Century Fox focused on sports, news and broadcast TV. The talks reached an impasse over price and have cooled significantly, though it could be put back on the front burner. A deal with Disney would throw into question Mr. Murdoch’s succession plans for his two sons: James, chief executive of 21st Century Fox, and Lachlan, executive co-chairman at Fox. Traditional media companies are racing to adapt to rapidly evolving industry changes that threaten their business, including the rise of streaming-media services that are capturing cable TV subscribers and mergers that have given tremendous clout to distributors such as Comcast Corp.,

Charter Communications and AT&T Inc. Now, the elder Mr. Murdoch, who has spent decades building interests in entertainment, has much of his attention focused on Todd Smith Fox News, which would remain in the fold of 21st Century Fox under the deal considered with Disney, according to The Wall Street Journal. Fox News has been dealing with the fallout of sexual-harassment scandals and adjusting to a prime-time lineup with new faces after high-profile departures, though it has maintained its No. 1 position in the cable-news ratings. The elder Mr. Murdoch took the reins at Fox News last year after longtime boss Roger Ailes was forced out over sexual-harassment allegations, over which the company has paid out tens of millions of dollars in settlements. Mr. Ailes, who died this year, denied the allegations.
