Person of the Year Jason Shelton Mayor of Tupelo

J

ASON LEE SHELTON, a native of Tupelo, is mayor of his hometown. He was elected in 2013 at the age of 37 – one of the youngest mayors in recent memory, the first Democrat in nearly 30 years. He was the first mayor elected from “East Tupelo,” the site of Elvis Presley’s birthplace. Tragedy struck early in his administration – a police officer ambushed and killed in the line of duty and an EF- 3 tornado that damaged more than 800 houses and commercial buildings and destroyed the beautiful tree canopy in the affected areas. We were battered, but not beaten, Jason told residents as he led them through physical and emotional recovery, earning MSNBC host Chuck Todd’s list as one of four “Rising Stars” in Mississippi. As mayor, Jason oversees nearly 2,000 full- and part-time employees, manages a combined budget of nearly $180 million that provides services to approximately 38,000 residents. Jason is a proud graduate of Tupelo High School; earned a bachelor’s in political science, graduating magna cum laude from Mississippi State University and a law degree from The University of Mississippi School of Law. He is engaged for the former Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick. Jason enjoys attending Mississippi State and Ole Miss home football games, boating, travel and going to political functions.
