Editor’s Letter
As I’m writing this, it’s pouring down rain, a rather frequent occurrence since early March. I’m familiar with the phrase, ‘April showers bring May flowers,’ so I know it comes with the season. And let me just say, I feel like with the amount of rain we’ve been getting, we should have the most flower-filled May ever. So I’m wishing for warmer weather and sunny days and trading my jackets for sundresses and sandals. Since rain is in the forecast for the foreseeable future, I suppose I’ll have no choice but to look at our fashion catalog on page 50 and prepare for better days. Local retailers do not disappoint this season. I’m personally ready to embrace the embroidery trend head-on and I have my eye on a few jumpsuits, too. Oh, and loafer mules are already in my shoe rotation. Behind-the-scenes side note: We unknowlingly picked the coldest day of March to shoot these looks. Needless to say, the models are the real MVPs. Fashion is just one of the ways to brighten up your day-to-day and we have other features to prove it. There are lemon recipes that taste as bright as they look (pg.13). The tartlets on page 15 are what dreams are made of (my dreams, at least). Shadow McKnight weaves beautiful wallhangings to add texture and uniqueness to your space (pg.45). And Amber Higgins is using her online store to give back to dogs in need (pg. 78). Fingers crossed that by the time this issue hits stands, we’re consistenly in the 70s and the sun is shining. I know we’ll be battling pollen, but with our fashion issue in hand, at least we’ll look good while doing so!

Newbie Alert: Hi! My name is Emma Kent, and I’m thrilled to be joining the Mud & Magnolias staff as the multimedia editor. Some of you might know me from the Daily Journal, where I was the education reporter for a couple of years. I spent my time writing about local schools, educators and all kinds of other things. It was rewarding and gave me valuable insight into Northeast Mississippi’s communities. But being friends with the Mud & Mag girls, I always wanted to be part of the magazine. So here I am. And I can’t wait to get started using all that I’ve learned about our region and state through my work with the newspaper to tell interesting and inspiring stories alongside the rest of the Mud & Mag team. I’ll be writing content for the magazine and website as well as keeping up with our social media channels, so look for fun, fresh content coming your way soon. A few other things about me: I’m married, and my husband Jacob and I just bought a historic house in downtown Tupelo that we are busy making our home. I have a cat that I adore (and probably over-Instagram). I grew up near Atlanta, but I’ve been in Mississippi for 7 years now.

Recipes LEMON CHICKEN WITH ASPARAGUS Ingredients: 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts 1/4 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt, pepper to taste 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon lemon pepper seasoning 1-2 cups chopped asparagus 2 lemons, sliced fresh parsley for topping Directions: For the chicken: Cover chicken breasts with plastic wrap and pound until each piece is roughly 3/4 of an inch thick (if your chicken breasts are on the thick side, you can also just cut them in half horizontally rather than pounding). Mix flour, salt and pepper in a shallow dish and toss each chicken breast in dish to coat. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat, then add the chicken and cook for 3 to 5 minutes on each side or until golden brown, sprinkling each side with lemon pepper directly in the pan. When the chicken is cooked through, transfer to a plate and set aside. For the asparagus and lemons: Add the chopped asparagus to the same pan you cooked the chicken in. Saute for several minutes until bright green and tender crisp. Remove from the pan and set aside. Then, lay lemon slices flat on the bottom of the pan and cook, without stirring, for a few minutes on each side until they caramelize (if needed, add a small pat of butter to the pan with the lemons to help prevent sticking). Remove lemons from pan and set aside. Finally, layer all ingredients in the pan asparagus, chicken and lemon slices on top. Top with fresh parsley to serve. LEMON TARTLETS WITH LEMON CURD Ingredients: Tartlet dough: 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cubed 1/4 cup granulated sugar 20

pinch of salt 1 egg yolk Lemon curd: 1/3 cup lemon juice (about 2 lemons’ worth) 2 large eggs 1 egg yolk 1/2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1 tablespoon heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract pinch of salt berries for garnish Directions: For the tartlets: Cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and add egg yolk, mixing until just combined. Use your hands to work the mixture into a dough. Roll the dough out on a floured surface. Cut dough into rounds with a cookie cutter. Press rounds into mini muffin tins and place in freezer for 30 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until pastry is golden. Set aside to cool. For the lemon curd: Heat lemon juice over medium heat until hot, but not boiling. Meanwhile, whisk the eggs and yolk in a medium bowl. Add the sugar, whisking in gradually. Continue whisking the mixture while slowly adding the hot lemon juice. Return mixture to saucepan and cook over medium heat. Stir constantly with a wooden spoon until mixture reaches 170 degrees and coats the back of the spoon. Remove saucepan from heat and stir in butter until melted. Once butter is melted, stir in cream, vanilla and salt. The curd should come together and thicken, but if not, return to heat and cook a few minutes longer, stirring constantly until it thickens. Spoon the lemon curd into each tartlet shell. Top each tartlet with candied lemons or fruit and serve. CANDIED LEMON SLICES Ingredients: 2 lemons ice water
2 cups granulated sugar 2 cups water Directions: Thinly slice lemons and remove seeds. Fill a medium-size bowl with ice and water. Meanwhile, bring a pot of water to a boil and add lemon slices. Boil for one minute and remove slices, transferring them to the ice water. Let lemon slices sit in the ice water for 2 to 3 minutes until cool, then drain. In a medium-size skillet bring sugar and water to a simmer and stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves. Add the lemon slices to the skillet in a single layer. Let simmer for an hour, or until rinds are translucent. Remove lemon slices and let cool on a wire rack. BAKED LEMON QUINOA Ingredients: 2 cups chicken broth 1 cup quinoa (or other grain) 1-2 green onions, finely chopped 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon zest, finely grated 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon salt Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prepare 8x8 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Add quinoa, onions, lemon zest, garlic and salt to baking dish. Pour broth over the top and stir to combine. Cover baking dish with foil and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Let rest, covered, for 5 to 10 minutes, then fluff with a fork and serve. LEMON ROSEMARY GIN FIZZ Ingredients: 1-2 ounces gin 2 ounces fresh lemon juice 2 ounces club soda sliced lemon and sprigs of rosemary for garnish Directions: Fill a cocktail glass with crushed ice. Pour gin, lemon juice and club soda over the ice. Garnish with lemon slices and rosemary sprigs to serve. M

Q&A: Oak River By Arden Spearman
Mississippi native Mitzi Galason is the CEO and designer of Oak River Company, which creates quality leather totes, wallets, purses, backpacks and other accessories. We spoke with her about her company and the creative process she goes through to bring the bags to life. >>> 1. What ties do you have to Mississippi? I am a Mississippi native, I was born in Greenwood, Mississippi, and grew up in Duck Hill where my entire family still resides today. I have the best memories growing up in Mississippi and my humble beginnings. I believe this is what carries me through this journey. I am often reminded of the spirit of generosity that flows through my motherland, Mississippi, and that generosity is what inspires me. 2. How was your company Oak River created? Oak River Company was created from a heart that longed to make a difference in the world. Oak River was actually first launched into the market as Legacy, but we felt like the umbrella need to be larger and encompass a broader audience, both male and female. So after meeting with a group out of Texas and sharing with them the heart behind the vision, and the foundation upon which we stand as a company, we decided Oak River Company, as it encompassed the vision perfectly. Isaiah 61:3 states: “And provide for those who grieve in Zion, to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.” Our prayer and heart’s desire is that all who encounter us, encounter hope and feel a spirit of love in all that we say and all that we do. Do we miss that at times? Absolutely, we are human; but our desires remain in tact and we are forever thankful for grace and forgiveness!

3. How would you describe the style of Oak River? The Oak River customer is laid-back, warm, with their priorities straight. They love their family and community. They are welcoming and hospitable. They love quality things, but they are not afraid to get their hands dirty, because they know that some things in life are worth struggling for. 4. What products do you offer for both men and women, and where can people find them in Northeast Mississippi? Oak River Company launched as a women’s full-grain leather line in 2012. We offer full-grain leather products from weekenders, totes, backpacks, wallets, purses, bracelets, keychains, and even earrings and necklaces. We also have a few awesome T-shirt designs available for the ladies. We just recently launched the men’s line in 2016, and we offer them messenger bags, leather duffels, bracelets, bifold wallets, ID wallets, business card holders, passport holders for both men and women, and are about to release a men’s backpack and a few other goodies! We also just launched a waxed canvas and leather combo line in January that will be hitting shelves in April. Our products are sold at About the South in Tupelo, The Red Door in Pontotoc, Hinton and Hinton in Oxford, Bliss Boutique in Fulton, Lip Chic in Corinth, L.A. Green in Starkville, and The Wooden Door in Olive Branch. 5. How are your pieces created? I design each piece myself, so it is quite an interesting process, to say the least. It takes about four months to take a hand sketched design and fully evolve it into a usable and functioning piece. Some of my work is self-inspired and sometimes it is inspired by someone I have met on this journey who has made an impact in my life. Each product has a story for sure! 6. What are some of your most popular pieces? For the ladies, definitely the Oak River Exclusive Tote, which is a private label design that I did for The Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond. Second, would be the simple tote and all of the leather accessories. For the men, the leather weekender, men’s messenger, passport holders, and both the bifold and ID wallets. 7. What are some staff and personal design favorites? A staff favorite is the Penninger and the new women’s hand-stitched leather weekender. Our customers love details, and both of these options are fully equipped with them. My personal favorite is the simple tote paired with a trinity wallet, a small cross body, and a simple pouch. I use each one of these to organize the inside of my simple tote. I leave my trinity wristlet attached at all times and keep the cross body strap in my car for trips inside stores or parks since it is the perfect grab-and-go for me. However, I have been using the small cross body as my grab-and-go lately, but you can’t go wrong either way! 8. How is giving back important to Oak River Company, and how can customers donate? Giving is my life purpose, so when people see an Oak River Bag I want them to know that their bag is so much more than an article they carry on their shoulder. Their purchases are changing lives with a bigger vision in place right here in the USA as well as abroad. I want Oak River customers to know that they are Difference Makers! At Oak River Company we are devoted to serving others, whatever that may look like. We are head over heels for our families and are dedicated to helping the community where we live. We are people who believe, hope, and dream. We believe in strength that comes from deep roots, and hearts wide enough to stretch across the ocean and love people we have never met. Anyone can donate to any of our givebacks by visiting our website at: www.oakrivercompany.com and clicking on “Our Legacy” page. From there, those interested can also read about our involvement and what each branch of the Mighty Oak is doing. M Photos by Anna Daniels Photography mudandmag.com

Brittney LeighAnne Dowell and her daughter, Ida Frances
L
isten well to Brittney LeighAnne Dowell for only a short time and learn three important facts: She has a heart for children and the environment, an eye for fashion and the vision to combine these things into something good. The 27-year-old Mississippi State University graduate is the architect behind Frances & Theo, a creative business Dowell says is “an ongoing and unfinished experiment.” What Frances & Theo is, in a nutshell, is a children’s shop and design studio. Dowell laughs at the mention of a design studio. Right now, her studio is a small, but colorful and organized closet upstairs in the apartment she shares with her husband Tim and their 18-month-old Ida Frances. Yes, Dowell’s adorable, dimpled daughter, Ida Frances – also lovingly and alternately called Fran or Frannie – is the inspiration for half the name of her mama’s experiment. When the Dowells, who married in 2014, began talking about children, they came up with two names: Ida Frances for a girl and Irving James Theophiles “Theo” for a boy. There’s no flesh-and-blood baby Theo yet, but there’s still time — and high hopes. But for now, the Theo of Frances & Theo is well represented by a stuffed cat, made from a freehand pattern once sketched by Dowell to console her upset baby girl. Dowell says she’s always been drawn to children’s products. So, armed with that and her degree in fashion design and merchandising, the creative mind of Dowell went to work on
her business concept. When she talks about Frances & Theo, there’s clearly an abundance of unabated joy in her conversation. “Frances & Theo may be broken into three distinct parts: Make. Learn. Play,” Dowell explains. Make In this phase, Dowel designs and creates products for Frances & Theo, and collaborates with other designers/makers whose vision is similar to hers. At this time she’s collaborating with designer and friend, Alejandra Torres, on a mini fabric collection called “Botanical Utopia.” Torres, a native of Peru, met Dowell when both were attending Delta State University and studying graphic design before Dowell moved on to MSU. The fabric collection on which they are working is for Spoonflower, an ethically responsible and sustainable custom on-demand fabric printing service. “I’ve used Spoonflower for years now to produce small runs of fabric to create little products such as bags, scarves, clothes and plush animals, like Theo the cat,” Dowell said. Learn This phase of Frances & Theo remains in its early stages, but to Dowell, it may be the most important. It’s “Fashion Education for the Mini Generation,” an early childhood education project designed to guide parents in teaching their children about fashion. Here’s the philosophy behind the project: “By educating the young generation about where their clothes come from

and how they are made, they are empowered as future fashion consumers,” Dowell says. “And by looking no further than their own wardrobes, parents can be equipped with fun and simple activities to teach their children about such topics as fiber, fabric, construction, style, care, maintenance, recycling as it relates to their clothes.” Play This phase of Frances & Theo involves a “quirky and playful little children’s shop with a consciously curated selection” of baby/kids’ goods. “In planning the inventory assortment, I am striving to ensure the products were ethically produced and directly and fairly compensate the artist/maker who created them,” Dowell said. Her mama’s fault? Dowell was born in Florence, Alabama, the second of seven siblings. Her father was in retail with McRae’s. “It was like being in a military family,” Dowell said, laughing. “Each of the seven kids was born in a different state.” The family landed in Vicksburg when Dowell was in high school, and she and her siblings were homeschooled. That’s where she met the man who would later become her husband. Dowell credits her mother – and other family members – with her artistic gifts. “She would always give me white paper and markers, and I would doodle,” Dowell said. “She kept a lot of them. It was always these primitive, childlike illustrations that I was drawn to. And my aunt and grandmother quilted.” These days, however, Ida Frances provides the lion share of inspiration for her mama’s work. Coming up with ideas for fabric designs may be Dowell’s favorite task. “I can dream up concepts all day,” she said. “And I then share my concepts with a few seamstresses with whom I work. I sew, but I am not a seamstress.” Most of the designs found on Frances & Theo products are things Ida Frances likes. For example, Ida likes pasta, so there’s now a Dowell-designed fabric called “Macaroni.” Ida also likes plants and moons and cats, hence, Theo the cat. Dowell’s work starts in a sketchbook, where she plays and experiments with cut paper, paint, markers, Crayons – whatever Ida uses. Later, Dowell refines her ideas on a computer. “My ideas are inspired by everyday life,” Dowell said. “This crazy, messy, everyday life.” The future of Frances & Theo seems bright, with plenty more of Dowell’s creative “doodles” making their way onto fabric projects. But Dowell’s vision is not limited to Frances & Theo. She’s working on a side project called “Dear One Collective” with a good friend. “The Collective would be a Christ-centered, multi-purpose collaborative makers space for creative women,” she said. “Ideally, it would be a non-profit that would provide business incubator opportunities for women with creative businesses, makers who need studio space/equipment, monthly educational resources and simply a space to explore ideas and have a community to connect, collaborate and encourage one another.” For now, it’s only a concept in Dowell’s creative mind, but when it becomes reality, as did Frances & Theo, it will be something good – combining Dowell’s passion for children, the environment and education. Sam and Marjorie Jacobs
S
am and Marjorie Jacobs’ art walks the streets, and that’s by design. The couple, with the rest of the staff at Master Grafix, design and print T-shirts at their West Tupelo workshop with supervision from Janey the dog and cats Stormy and Miss Priss. It’s incredibly gratifying as artists to see their work out and about. “What we enjoy most is that people enjoy wearing them,” Marjorie Jacobs said. Although the screen printing process can be used on all kinds of items, T-shirts are the most common canvas for their art. “A T-shirt is so universal,” Sam Jacobs said. “It’s an easy way to convey a message.” Some of their customers come in and know exactly what they want. Other customers give the Master Grafix crew free rein to create something eye-catching. They’ve tapped into folk art for the Tupelo Running Club to create the quirky tie-dyed shirts for its annual marathon. “It means a lot that people trust us with that,” Sam Jacobs said. “It’s always an honor.” Since February 2017, the Master Grafix crew has stretched its creative muscles to create a special T-shirt of the month. “It’s fresh every month,” Sam Jacobs said. The series started with a MICI ZIBI, the Native American
word meaning “Great River” that gave birth to the word Mississippi. It’s been followed by shirts proclaiming “Magnolia State of Mind,” “Everything’s Gravy” and “Home,” featuring the outline of the state in place of the O. “It’s all geared to the South or Mississippi themes,” Marjorie Jacobs said. “We thought we would stick to our roots.” The most popular, so far, has been the February 2018 shirt that featured a banjo-playing squirrel. The squirrel went coast to coast with orders from California and New York, Sam Jacobs said. T-shirts and design brought Marjorie and Sam together. The couple met while they were students at the University of Mississippi and worked at Oxford T-shirt company. Sam Jacobs was majoring in film and theater, but ended up working at Oxford T-shirt because he was having so much fun as the T-shirt chairman for his fraternity. “I was just doing graphic arts on the side,” Sam Jacobs said. “I just really enjoyed it.” Marjorie Jacobs was majoring in graphic design and took a position at Oxford T-Shirt as a way to put her studies into action. “It’s worked out well for us,” Marjorie Jacobs said. The Jacobses have been a couple for nearly 10 years and married four years ago. They began working for Master Grafix as designers and then took over managing the business for owners Lisa and Dillard Howell in 2009. mudandmag.com

“They’re our guardian angels,” Sam Jacobs said. Before the first drop of ink hits fabric, there’s a lot of work that goes into creating a shirt. For the T-shirts of the month, the Jacobses start with the T-shirt color and then pull together the colors, fonts and images that inspire them using graphic design software. They refine by adding texture and shading. Most screen printing uses the spot color process. Spot color works like stenciling; each ink color is pushed through a cut-out design. When the inks are layered together, the design emerges. For screen printing, the design is separated into layers. Those layers are burned onto the screens coated with emulsion using a process similar to developing photos. After exposure to light, the emulsion is washed away to leave the design burned into the screens, creating the stencil for each color. Then the screens are loaded on a printing press - Master Graphix has a 12-station automated carousel as well as a manual
press. The ink is loaded onto each screen, where it will be forced through the screen with a squeegee onto the T-shirt. At the end, the shirt will come off the press and go into a dryer to set the ink. Once the screens are set and filled with ink, there’s still a lot of adjustments to be made. The Master Grafix crew will print and reprint test images to make sure everything is lined up and the colors pop. “It’s not a perfect science,” Sam Jacobs said. “There’s a lot of trial and error.” When it’s time to start running the shirts, the shirts are carefully but quickly positioned as the carousel spins between stations. When the printing is done, the shirts come off the printing press and are laid in the dryer. Then the shirts are ready to take their artistic messages out into the world. “It’s a great creative outlet; we’re fortunate to have that,” Sam Jacobs said. “We’re glad people like it.” M

hadow McKnight is obsessed with textiles. At work, where she designs office, hospitality, RV and healthcare furniture for Flex Steel, McKnight works with durable, high-end textiles, designed to hold up under constant use. But at home, the 27-year-old artist takes textiles back to their most primitive forms through weaving. McKnight weaves yarn — mostly wool and cotton — into patterns and textures hung from decorative dowels. The finished woven tapestries have a quality reminiscent of Native American dreamcatchers while remaining their own, wholly unique thing. The patterns evoke the primitive American Southwest, but the colors are much more varied and modern. In 2014, McKnight began noticing wall-mounted woven tapestries online. “I talked about them with my friend, Mackenzie Pettit, who was also an interior designer and a kindred spirit,” McKnight said. “She said, ‘I would love to have one, but they’re so expensive.’ And they are.” McKnight got the idea to make her own. “I thought, I can do this. I’ve always been a crafty person, and I love doing things and making things with my hands.” So she researched looms, and one weekend she drove from Memphis to her parents’ home in Weir, Mississippi, to find her mom had ordered her a small lap loom. “I think she just ordered it because she had Amazon Prime and I didn’t,” McKnight said. “It was like Christmas morning. I opened it immediately and sat on the floor with nothing but the 10-page booklet that came with the loom and started weaving.” She was utterly captivated, finishing her first tapestry before the weekend was over. As she dedicated more and more time to her new craft, her dad built her a full-sized loom she could sit at and weave larger pieces. Four years later, she still weaves every day. The thing that drew her into weaving was the fact that she is working with fabric. “Obviously, my passion is design, specifically textiles,” 46

Meet Shadow and hear more about her love of weaving at mudandmag.com.
McKnight said. “I get to work with them at work and also, create textiles at home. The thing that’s different is, at work, I’m on the computer non-stop, and at home, I leave the computer. I don’t need any new technology to do what I do with my weaving. I love that — just me, my hands, and my loom. It’s a great feeling to be able to create something from nothing.” While the fabrics she hangs on her wall are much less functional than the designs she uses at work, McKnight said she still sees them as useful design. “Even though this is just an art piece, it has a function while I’m weaving it,” she said. “I joke that it’s my therapy, but it is calming and meditative.” McKnight is also interested in the storytelling function of her art and the art that inspires her. She doesn’t directly draw inspiration from Native American culture, but there is no denying its influence. She has long been an admirer of the storytelling nature of Native American art — their dreamcatchers and colorful textiles with layers of story hidden in each pattern and color. McKnight isn’t the only artist in the woven tapestry scene, but her pieces stand out. She weaves colors tightly together toward the tops, pulling tufts out here and there for added depth and texture, before letting the colors and yarns 48

deconstruct themselves toward the bottom. “Mine add another element,” she said. “Normally it comes off a little boho, and hippie-dippy, but I like to have fullness in each of my pieces — some flare. I like there to be lots of really full fringe at the bottom of each tapestry.” She has also pushed herself to experiment with smaller, framed pieces that are much more tightly constructed and succinct. The glass of the frame, she said, adds a layer of preservation and class to the art. She wove her largest tapestry for her own wedding, a 3-foot piece suspended from a piece of driftwood she found while hiking with her husband, Jake. Her tapestries got enough attention that she started Kaleidoscope By Shadow, an online shop to sell her wares and take customer orders. The word Kaleidoscope has always been McKnight’s favorite word, partly because of its appearance in The Beatles’ song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and partly because of its meaning. The word is derived from two Greek words, Kalos, meaning beautiful, and Eidos, meaning form. Not to mention, the colors used in McKnight’s works certainly resemble a glance through a kaleidoscope. Her tapestries, wall-mounted or framed, can be purchased on her Instagram, @kaleidoscope.byshadow. M

Spring Fashion Catalog This spring and summer, we’re stealing looks from the seasons themselves. Think bold florals and fresh-as-lemonade embroidered details that encourage everyday pieces to take themselves a little less seriously. The racks at local retailers are also taking cues from nature in bloom, and we’ve picked out a selection of flared pants and flowy jumpsuits with silhouettes that would make even the flowers jealous. Higgins’ dogs Hali, left, and Cora
Amber Higgins and her dog Cora
O
Hali+Cora By Lauren Wood
n Valentine’s Day in 2015, Amber Higgins had her heart broken. She had just lost her best friend, her dog Hali. The black Scottish terrier was 8 years old when she died from renal failure, and Higgins was devastated. “Hali was a source of love and joy and companionship. It may sound crazy, but I’m not married and I don’t have kids,” Higgins said of losing her first dog. It was from Hali’s passing that Amber decided to start Hali+Cora, an e-commerce retail company. Named after Hali and Higgins’ other dog Cora, the company sells clothing and accessories from the website. Proceeds benefit sick dogs and their owners, and animal welfare organizations. “It all began as a place to put that grieving energy and for a chance to put something positive into this world,” Higgins said. “It’s not so much about the business as it is about helping dogs.” Hali+Cora was started last fall after Higgins, also the owner of Intricid Salon in Tupelo, spent the summer connecting with suppliers, learning about online-only business and setting up the shop. She wants to connect with owners of sick dogs who may need financial help with veterinary bills, so you can reach out to Higgins if you know of a dog owner who may need help. “Dogs can teach us a lot- they teach us loyalty and compassion. They also are very selfless, and if you pay attention to how they treat you and others, you can learn a lot. They just inspire me,” Higgins said. M
