Maybe it’s the warm air, the scent of blooming flowers or the feeling of renewal as the heavy blanket of winter is lifted away, but there’s something about the springtime that calls for light, refreshing meals. No matter what the occasion, we’ve got a collection of recipes perfect for the season.
With winter’s cold thawed but summer’s sweltering heat yet to roll in, there’s no better time to rock a denim jacket, and there’s no better way to rock a denim jacket than with a little fringy flair.

s we spring forward into, in my opinion, the most beautiful season, I hope you can find inspiration in the blooming Earth that surrounds you. The newest spring fashion trends include the pinks and blues of hydrangeas and the soft whites of gardenias with the bright oranges and yellows of daylilies making an appearance. The varying purples of Japanese magnolias have also found their place in this season’s style, and you can’t forget the classic ivory of our beloved Mississippi magnolia. Regardless of the current trends, fashion and art remain what we make it. From women’s flowy dresses and stylish rompers to men’s comfortable loungewear and spiffy suits, Mississippi fashion has, in many ways, kept up with the runways of New York while remaining true to the deep roots planted many moons ago. One thing that will never go out of style, however, is Mississippi’s charm. It spans beyond our wardrobe choices and making itself evident in the beauty that surrounds us.

1 denim jacket 3 rolls of silver (or color of choice) single row sequin trim 1 tube of fabric glue 1 small Popsicle stick Scissors
DIRECTIONS 1. Lay the jacket on a flat surfac . The back should be facing you. Be sure to spread the sleeves out horizontally so the entire jacket is flat 2. Cut the sequin trim into multiples of three sizes, short (about 1 1/2 inches), medium (about 2 inches) and long (about 2 1/2 to 3 inches). 3. Cut four long strips of sequin trim to go along the back seam of each sleeve (two per sleeve), avoiding the cu . Cut one long strip to span the back seam of the jacket as well. 4. Horizontally glue the two long sleeve strips to the back seams of each of the jacket’s sleeves. Gradually glue the strips down to each sleeve starting from the edge so the glue is fresh for each section.
5. Start vertically gluing the three different sized strips to the back middle of the jacket, starting with longest strip on the edges and alternating with the medium and short strips to create the dangling fringe. Go back and forth between each side until you reach the middle. Use the Popsicle stick to press down each piece as to avoid getting glue on your fingers 6. Finish the jacket by horizontally gluing the remaining long sequin strip directly above the varying strips on the middle of the jacket to cover any uneven places or glue marks. Glue gradually as mentioned in step 4. 7. Use the Popsicle stick to press down all glued sequin strips one final time and let dry for 24 hours. M

hen Morgan Fyfe Powell was a little girl living in Oxford, she tried all kinds of sports, but wasn't particularly good at any of them. “I was the kid on the soccer field with a bow in my hair, picking wildflowers," said Powell, 27. When she was in fourth grade, she began taking art lessons after school from Taylor Ricketts. “I was creative as a kid, but I didn't think I'd ever be an artist," she said. She was wrong. Today, art is Powell's full-time job. She works out of a studio in the home she and her husband, Jesse, share in Seattle. But she hasn't abandoned her roots and will be bringing her talent to two art festivals in Northeast Mississippi this spring. She'll be at the Double Decker Arts Festival in Oxford on April 23, and at the Gumtree Art and Wine Festival in Tupelo May 6-8. “I'm so excited to do shows again, to meet people and show my work and get to learn other artists' stories," she said. Powell's journey from art student to artist was winding. She took some art classes in high school and found them to be a welcome challenge. “I felt I was getting better, and I was encouraged by teachers, but art was just a hobby," Powell said. In high school, she had created several paintings for her parents, Lea and Richard Fyfe of Oxford. Someone saw one and asked Powell if she'd paint something for them while she was a student at Ole Miss. “I always had a little studio in my room in college," she said. "It was a healthy outlet for me. It let me be creative." She accepted that commission. And then someone else saw that painting and asked her to do six pieces for an investment property. “They were divine encounters," Powell said. "And it was a way for me to fund things in college that were fun without having to ask my parents for money." Powell majored in social work, and after graduation, she moved to Seattle to take a job in marketing. “I moved here for a boy, but I wouldn't admit that until after Jesse and I married," she said. "I used to say I moved here for work." In Seattle, she continued to do artwork on the side as she worked full time. “At the end of 2019, I was working some pretty long hours and weekends, and I realized I didn't love marketing," she said. "I knew I didn't want to do that for the long haul." With some good advice and guidance, Powell quit her job and become a full-time artist at the beginning of 2020. “It was an interesting journey," she said. "You build yourself up and are so excited for the transition. But then there's this pressure to create really good work something I could be proud of." So Powell began creating work without pressure. She just started showing up in her studio every day. If she created something she liked, wonderful. If she created something she didn't like, at least she'd showed up. Her artwork soon took on a different look. She would begin a painting with a full layer of gold and silver leaf, then use heavy body acrylics over the gold.

“I had no idea when I was painting with gold what that meant, but I think I do now," she said. "When I moved to Seattle, I don't know if I could have found a place more different than the South. It's really gray here, and people keep to themselves. You don't meet people as easily, and they're not very warm. I decided if I'm not going to find that here, I'm going to be that here. When you put a painting with gold on it in a room, it reflects the light it's in. I feel like that's me." Powell specializes in two kinds of paintings: abstracts and landscapes. For the landscapes, she draws from the beauty of both the Pacific Northwest and the South. “It's really easy to be inspired," she said. "I take what they represent from my point of view. I know what it's going to look like at the end of the painting, but it's hours and hours before I get there. What story do I really want this painting to tell?" Powell will do a large batch of landscapes, then go back to abstracts. “The abstracts are so freeing because I don't know what they're going to look like," she said. "So it's a good balance. It may take me years to finish one. I may work on 30 paintings at one time. I like the flow of constantly moving from one to another. And that's also a way not to waste paint." Now that COVID-19 restrictions are lifting around the country, Powell is eager to participate in art shows again. She had applied to several in 2020, but they all got canceled. She was able to attend two shows in Seattle in 2021. At the art festivals in Oxford and Tupelo this spring, Powell will have everything from 4-by-4inch paintings to 48-by-60-inch paintings as well as stationery card prints. “I want to have a range for people's space and budgets," she said. "I feel like art is an investment, not just financially, but also an investment in the space in your house." Powell and her husband don't have a lot of wall space in their townhouse on a beach in Seattle. She has one painting hanging, and it isn't even one of her own. “When we grow out of this house, I'd love to support other artists," she said. "I want to have their work on my walls." Magic a i at the
MAGNOLIA By ADAM ARMOUR Photos ADAM ROBISON
With the flick of a switch, the auditorium was awash in red, transforming the walls, stage and all 390 seats into a scene from an Argento film. From behind a small control panel in one corner of the balcony, Justin Bartlett’s voice echoed throughout the Magnolia Civic Center and Cine Theatre’s 73-year-old auditorium. “If that’s too dark, we can change it,” he said. Suddenly, the room shifted colors, from red to pink, pink to blue.

“We have concert grade everything,” Bartlett said from above. “Pretty much anything that we can make the audience ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ about.” When Bartlett took over as the New Albany nonprofit theater’s manager late last year, he already had a plan in place for the first five years of his leadership. His goal is to transform the city-owned venue into a facility unlike any other in the area, complete with an array of technical wizardry that can carry audiences away or pull them in. It’s that moment - when the theater walls, the seats, the audience disappear – that Bartlett lives for. “When you get that reaction from the audience, it’s all worth it,” he said. “You know that you’ve done your job.” JUSTIN BARTLETT WONDERS ‘WHAT IF?’ Standing near the balcony railing, Bartlett motioned toward the stage, still awash with color. “I used to sit up on that stage in high school, and we would just talk about ‘what-if,’” he said. “What if we could do this in the theater, or what if we could do that to the theater.” He grinned, just slightly. “You know what?” he said. “I’m in the position now. I’m going to do it.” When Bartlett took over leadership of the Magnolia Civic Center in October, the theater was undergoing renovations. It had a new stage and curtains and traditional theater lighting. Bartlett immediately set about expanding on those renovations while incorporating his own ideas of what a modern theater should be. With the approval of the theater’s board of directors, Bartlett had installed the equipment necessary to create what he called “4-D shows.” At the touch of a button, Bartlett and a small team of stagehands can summon snow or make bubbles rain down from above. They can fill the air with smoke and the scent of burning wood, shower the audience in confetti or bathe them in a sea of colors. “I wanted to license us back to showing movies and that sort of thing, but I didn’t want to do it traditionally,” he said. “We already have a movie theater here in the city, so I wanted to do something a little bit different.” Eventually, he wants to equip the auditorium for a relatively new trick in the world of showmanship: projection mapping, a growing technology that allows for images to be cast on different surfaces to create the illusion of change. Suddenly, a brick wall might crumble away or become frozen in a block of ice. Ivy may crawl along the stage or flames engulf the ceiling. It makes everything more immersive, Bartlett said, and will set the Magnolia Civic Center apart. “I don’t know of anybody else who’s using projection mapping right now,” he said. “Entertainment is entertainment; it’s just the level of professionalism that’s different.” When it comes to that, Bartlett learned from arguably the best in the business.

FROM CRUISE LINE TO CIVIC CENTER Much of Bartlett’s enthusiasm for showmanship comes from the 31-year-old’s previous work with Disney Cruise Line. Before joining the Civic Center last October, Bartlett spent three years entertaining guests in the way only the Walt Disney Company and its nearly 70 years in the theme park and live entertainment business can. “I’ve worked at a whole lot of different places, but I’ve never experienced something so extensive,” Bartlett said of his time with Disney. Once hired, his new employers sent him to school for a week to learn about Disney history – Disney University, it’s called – and instill in him four key tenets: safety, courtesy, show and efficiency. Bartlett said he’s brought those tenets, and what he learned as a showman, to New Albany. “They trained me and taught me very well,” he said of Disney. “A lot of the ideas come from, not just experiences on the ship… But when you work for that company, they give you a mindset for how to develop that into entertainment.” Although Bartlett may have brought Disney to the Civic Center, it was the Civic Center that brought Bartlett to Disney. “I actually grew up in this facility,” Bartlett said, speaking of his time with the local school’s theater program. “I guess I was in ninth grade, 10th grade whenever I started. It was a long time ago.” Although initially hesitant to be a part of the theater program, Bartlett said he quickly fell in love with the magic of showmanship. “I absolutely fell in love with theater. Fell in love with the production side of everything,” he said. “Performing was fun, but I fell in love with the special effects, the lighting, the audio. All that type of stuff. That’s kind of what led me to Disney.” Like he said, it’s the “oohs” and “aahs” Bartlett lives for. “When you put an actor on stage, of course, they’re portraying their talent, their art,” he said. “But once you start adding those special effects and that lighting and that audio, it starts bringing the whole show together. That is what I like.” THE CIVIC CENTER’S PAST AND FUTURE If it weren’t for the community around it, there’s a good chance the Magnolia Civic Center would have shuttered long ago. The building, now officially a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is funded through a combination of city allotted funds and donations. “It’s the history of this place,” Bartlett said of the Civic Center’s
ongoing support from both the city and individuals from the community. “When I speak to anyone of the older generation, they have a story to tell me about this place.” That history pressures Bartlett to push the Civic Center toward what he believes is its full potential as a venue. Along with a slate of programming for the coming year, ranging from 4-D movies to concerts to plays to a localized version of “America’s Got Talent,” the theater is also set to undergo a physical transformation. He’d like to completely remodel the auditorium, giving it a fresh coat of paint, red panels on the walls, new audio equipment and brand new seating. He’d like for the balcony to serve as a sort of VIP seating area. His plans don’t stop inside the auditorium, however. Bartlett wants to transform an empty space near the entrance – “the gallery,” he called it – into a sort of museum celebrating the Civic Center’s long history. The outside of the building will receive a facelift, and the theater recently began utilizing a new online ticketing system. “We are nowhere near completion. Not even close,” Bartlett said of his plans for the theater. “I would say, in the next six months, anyone who steps into the theater who hasn’t been here in a while won’t recognize the facility. It will be completely different.” MAGIC THROUGH SIGHT AND SOUND Countless stories have been told in the Civic Center’s auditorium. Thousands of people have laughed, gasped, cheered at performances on that stage. It’s a history that should be celebrated, even as the venue grows and changes. “You don’t want to necessarily take away all that stuff that people have worked for,” Bartlett said of previous changes to the Civic Center. “We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for all those people.” Despite his grand ambitions, Bartlett’s vision for the Magnolia Civic Center doesn’t veer far from those of his predecessors over the past 73 years. Theater is meant to thrill. To delight. To create magic through sight and sound. “When the lights come up,” he said, “or the film starts, or the very first special effect happens, and the kids go ‘oh’ and they get excited – I don’t care if I worked 200 hours on that show and I’m exhausted. It doesn’t matter. That’s the payback.” M

There's no other company in the country doing anything quite like what Blue Delta Jeans is doing. But for the small team at the 10-year-old, Shannon-based clothing manufacturer, creating a custom-fitted pair of blue jeans is about as American as it gets. “The blue jean is an American invention by Levi Strauss,” Johnson Benjamin, chief design officer for Blue Delta, said. “He started the design back in the 1800s, so it is a purely American design. Blue jeans are America.” The company got its start in 2012 with Nick Weaver and Josh West at the helm. According to Benjamin, West saw the wealth of talented sewing machine operators in the area and wanted to tap into that talent pool to create something unique, but also built to last. “He really wanted to start something that wouldn't go away," Benjamin said. “Nick and Josh put their heads together and ended up picking blue jeans as their craft.” A decade later, the jeans created at Blue Delta are in the closets of some of the world’s biggest stars, including actor Morgan Freeman and singer/songwriter Thomas Rhett. Benjamin joined the company shortly after Blue Delta’s establishment. He said it didn’t take him long to see the quality of the work they were doing. “I was in the design and sewing world and had a family background in it,” he said. “I became aware of the company and was really intrigued by it. I spoke to the owners and bought a pair of the jeans, and in that timeframe, I realized they probably needed help in the design world." Although Benjamin had never personally crafted a pair of jeans, he knew he could learn the skills it required. By 2015, Blue Delta was continuously growing, prompting Benjamin to leave his other work and become a partner in the company. “Since then, we've just been growing Blue Delta along the way."
The aim of Blue Delta is to create custom, tailor-made blue jeans for every customer. “We actually call ourselves a bespoke jean company,” Benjamin said. “Which is to say that, in the fancy tailor world, we are taking your measurements and making a jean for your body." Each Blue Delta client has about 30 measurements taken waist, hips, seat, thigh, mid-thigh, low-thigh, knee and calf and some depth measurements along the way. After the tailoring process is complete, designers at Blue Delta draft a pattern that is specific to the body's measurements. Clients select if they want high-rise, mid-rise or low-rise jeans and flare leg, skinny or cropped styles. For the Chief Design Officer, seeing Blue Delta develop as a progressive fashion industry in Mississippi has been a full circle experience. “Along the way, Mississippi, and all of the South really, was known for their sewing and garment production. Now in modern times, a lot of garment production is unfortunately overseas,” Benjamin said. Many of Blue Delta’s employees came from backgrounds in garment manufacturing – men and women who lost their jobs when the companies for which they worked moved their operations overseas. “We were able to tap into a bunch of talent,” Benjamin said. “While Mississippi isn't known for fashion, this is actually a product that fits perfectly here in the Tupelo area." Even though Benjamin has been with the company for nearly a decade, his favorite part of the job remains unchanging. “I love being able to get people in jeans that are specific to them,” he said. “I see their eyes light up when it fits perfectly." M

Double Decker Arts Festival has been a long-standing tradition in Oxford, Mississippi since 1996. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the festival will return with art, food and live music the weekend of April 22 and 23 around the historic Courthouse Square. Kinney Ferris, Executive Director of Visit Oxford, recently sat down with Mud & Magnolias to discuss the details of the 25th annual Double Decker Arts Festival. When is Double Decker? “Double Decker is happening Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23. One thing we want everyone to know is the main art vendors will just be there on Saturday. There’s live music Friday and Saturday night. On Friday, we will have demonstrations and the Oxford Artists' Guild set up by the Oxford Visitors Center with demos. That starts Friday at 10 a.m., and it goes until 4 p.m. The Artist Guild will also be selling goods during that time." What kind of music will attendees be listening to? “On Friday evening starting at 6:15 p.m. until 10 or 10:30 p.m., we will have a country music night. The Wilkins Sisters, 49 Winchester and country music star Brett Young will be performing on North Lamar. Saturday's music starts at 11 a.m. and lasts until 10 p.m. The Revivalists will be headlining that day. That’s a little more of a mix of genres with local music, including Oxford band Happy Landing and some good rock and blues music. It’s a little bit of everything during the day." Can you talk about the festival's food? “All food will be right around the courthouse. From BBQ to popsicles to funnel cakes to sliders to pizza to chicken salad to ice cream, we'll have a little bit of everything! We’re excited to include local restaurants every year. Taylor Grocery will be there in addition to lots of other local food joints."

What will the art scene look like this year? “There will be 180 booth spaces. You can basically find any kind of handmade art. The artists have gone through a process to be selected and are from all over the region. Different types of painting techniques will be represented, along with a diverse selection of art. It's a great time to support local artists who haven't had a chance to get their art out in the last few years." What else can Double Decker attendees look forward to? “The Double Decker Spring Run will be Saturday morning. Also, the kids area will be set up from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. downtown that same day. There'll be a 'Best Dressed Pet' contest for anyone who's interested in dressing up their furry friend! One new addition is the Blue Delta Blues Alley where you can listen to blues music. Also, shuttles will be picking up at the old Baptist parking lot (University South Campus), and there will be a shuttle that drops you off at Something Southern. You can also be picked up at Something Southern and taken back to your car. There’s also a pickup at the high school which will take you to Something Southern. One important thing to remember is we do expect big crowds, especially after two years, so we’re encouraging people to use the shuttle to make it a better experience for everyone." And finall , what will it cost to attend? “It's free!"
