Editor’s Letter
The holidays change the pace of everyday life to an uncomfortably fast speed. I suppose it starts at Thanksgiving when Black Friday ushers in the panic of buying Christmas gifts for everyone on my list. Then I am either planning a Christmas party or two, attending several others, plus the various family gatherings that are interspersed throughout the last weeks of December. I’ve already committed to participating in two different parades. At some point, I want to decorate my new house. And none of this includes the traveling, cooking and gift wrapping that takes up a chunk of time. And somewhere in all of that, I want to make plans for New Year’s because no one wants to be bored ringing in the new year. I’m getting tired just thinking about it and I’m positive I’m forgetting something. A few years ago, two of my closest friends and I decided to give each other our time for Christmas instead of a traditional gift. It is one of the things I most look forward to when the holidays approach, and I’m looking for other ways to incorporate this slower, more thoughtful mindset. Maybe it’s recreating our table centerpiece on page 29 and making it a family affair. Or using the gift options throughout the magazine to make a person feel special. One of my personal favorites is loading up family and/or friends and going to a Christmas tree farm (pg. 39) to get a first-hand smell of Christmas. Perhaps a more realistic choice would be taking our recipes on page 17 and making a meal for the people in your life (bonus if you cook it with them). What are some ways you embrace the holiday season? Email me your answers and we will post responses to our social media accounts. Including a photo is even better! Let’s help each other slow down and enjoy the most important parts of the holidays.
We want to hear from you and share with the community.

1 • Ellie: I know I’m probably the odd ball, but I love New Year’s. I’ve always been surrounded by some of my favorite people on this holiday and there is something really special to me about welcoming a fresh start with a celebration. 2 • Shannon: I’m looking forward to Christmas with all the festivities like watching the Nutcracker ballet, seeing all the parades and decorating for the holidays. 3 • Caleb: I have always enjoyed Thanksgiving as a time to be with family and as an opportunity to practice contentment and gratitude. 4 • Leslie: Thanksgiving. Sandwiched between Halloween and Christmas, it seems to be the forgotten holiday, but what could be better than a big parade, good food, family, football and being grateful? 5 • Carmen: My favorite is Thanksgiving because most years, it is the first time I have seen some of my family since Christmas. I look forward to it all year! 6 • Missha: Christmas because I love the look on my child’s face when she opens gifts! It’s also well enjoyed time with family and most importantly, Jesus’ birthday, the reason for the season.

7 • Lauren: Christmas! Christmas is the one holiday that my whole family is able to get together, so for me Thanksgiving and New Year’s don’t even compare.
Adam Robison Hannah Richardson
8 • Dennis: Christmas, because of all the emotions it brings – joy, thankfulness, generosity. And your emotions evolve as you grow from a child to a parent, from anticipation of getting and opening those gifts as a child to helping Santa with the presents as a parent.

9 • Derek: Thanksgiving will always have a special place in my heart. Or stomach, rather. Food just tastes better then. Getting out of school was always a joyful experience and coming home to the house smelling of a vast array of food didn’t hurt either. It’s more of the same for me in the present.

Recipes SWEET POTATO SOUP Ingredients 3 to 4 sweet potatoes 1/2 cup maple syrup 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 1/2 cups vegetable broth 1 cup apple cider 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese 2 tablespoons butter salt and pepper, to taste Directions: Bake sweet potatoes at 400 degrees for 1 hour. Meanwhile, add maple syrup and cinnamon to a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. The mixture should have a honey consistency. Peel the skins from the cooked sweet potatoes and add the potato to a food processor and puree with 1 cup of broth. Stir in sweet potato mixture with maple syrup mixture and add remaining broth, apple cider, nutmeg and salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes. Add heavy whipping cream and cook for another 5 minutes. Then add cheese and butter and cook until cheese is melted through. Serve. CINNAMON CHEDDAR TWISTS Ingredients: 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed 1/4 cup butter, melted 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 cup of sharp cheddar cheese, shredded Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut puff pastry in 1 inch sections. Brush with melted butter. Mix cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle on the buttered pastry. Sprinkle cheese on top. Take each end of the pastry and twist. greased baking sheet. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. CINNAMON COCONUT LATTE Ingredients: 12 ounces coffee of your choice 2 teaspoons coconut oil 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 cup unsweetened coconut milk 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract Directions: Brew coffee. While coffee is making, add coconut oil to a medium saucepan and melt over medium heat. Add all ingredients to a blender and mix well. Serve. GREEK CHICKEN Ingredients: 1 chicken, 3 to 4 lbs 4 to 8 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 to 2 cinnamon sticks pinches ground cinnamon 1/2 medium yellow onion, diced 1 teaspoon garlic (more or less to taste) kosher salt fresh cracked pepper 15 to 16 ounces tomato sauce, (unflavored and low sodium) 2 tablespoons tomato paste rice, noodles, vegetable noodles, or whatever you would like to serve the chicken over Directions: Cut chicken into 10 pieces (2 wings, 2 drumsticks, 2 thighs, 2 breasts each cut in half through the bone). In a large, deep pot, sautĂŠ pan or braising pan, melt 4 tablespoons butter with the cinnamon sticks over medium-low heat. The key with this dish is to brown the chicken slowly and to make sure the butter never burns. Season chicken pieces on both sides with salt, pepper, and pinch of cinnamon. Place chicken skin side down in the butter and slowly brown
— this should take about 15 minutes. Flip the chicken over, and brown for another 2 to 3 minutes. Remove chicken, and brown diced onion 2 to 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another minute. Add chicken, and then add tomato sauce and tomato paste to the pan. Tilt pan or use a spoon to disperse the tomato paste. Cover the pan and cook for 30 minutes at a low temperature, checking after 10 minutes to make sure the liquid is gently bubbling. Return chicken to the pan, and if necessary, continue cooking at a low temperature until done, which may be as many as 5 to 15 minutes more (or perhaps ever longer). Meanwhile, cook rice or noodles. Add a few large spoonfuls of the tomato sauce to coat the noodles. Add grated parmesan cheese, if desired. HOLIDAY SANGRIA Ingredients: 1/2 cup Grand Marnier 1/4 cup brandy 1 orange, halved and sliced 1 lime, sliced 1 pear, sliced 3 cinnamon sticks 1 bottle dry red wine 3/4 cup ginger ale Directions: Add first 7 ingredients to a large pitcher and stir well. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Right before serving, add ginger ale and enjoy. M Photos by Lauren Wood

Trendy Tree
In 2009, Jeannie Pence bought $650 worth of glass Christmas ornaments to sell on an e-commerce website. Her daughter Carrie thought she’d lost her mind. By Ellie Turner

Two years prior, Jeannie and her husband Terry planted Christmas trees to sell on a farm in their retirement. While the trees were growing, Jeannie’s brother encouraged her to start a website and sell product. She chose ornaments and went for it, with little knowledge about e-commerce, being a nurse practitioner by trade. After some time, Carrie gave her mom a tip to start selling Raz ornaments and it was at that point Jeannie realized Carrie would be an integral part of growing the family business. Before long, the Pences were able to retire and focus on their project, though different from their initial plan. Pence Christmas Tree Farm never sold a single tree. “The trees are still growing,” Jeannie said. “Some of them are probably 15 feet tall now. The only one we ever cut was a few years ago because we wanted the grandkids to have the experience of cutting a Christmas tree.” In 2012, they bought warehouse space in their hometown of Pontotoc, Mississippi, and hired Carrie and her husband David Martin fulltime and operated under the business name Trendy Tree. After two years as full-time employees, Carrie and David bought the business from Jeannie and Terry and have grown it bigger than any of them thought possible. These days, Carrie is buying $400,000 worth of seasonal and home décor more than once a year for the home décor and crafting online shop. And she’s thanking her mom for having such a wild idea. “We started out with Christmas and then we added in crafting materials like the mesh and wreath-making supplies and now there is probably more of a focus on home décor and some year-round products,” Jeannie said. Carrie and David remain the only two employees, though Jeannie still assists in crafting videos, selecting some of the items at market and managing the website. Most of Trendy Tree’s sales are not local as they don’t have a retail location. All orders are made online and can be shipped worldwide. “Some of our ornaments are made in Germany, and I’ll be darned if some of them aren’t shipped back to Germany,” Jeannie said.

While owning and operating a family business often requires late nights and working on weekends, Trendy Tree is truly a family affair. Occasionally, Carrie and David’s children Matt, Maggie and AJ will stop by the warehouse and fill orders. “We’re it, so we’re kind of everywhere,” Carrie said. “I process orders, David pulls them, we both pack them. We clean the toilets. We take out the garbage. I mean, we do everything.” The Trendy Tree customer appreciates the
“
taste. The two use each other to make buying decisions for the online shop so all demographics and preferences are covered. The Martins moved into their home in March 2016, so this year they are making sure to decorate from top to bottom. Last Christmas, in the throws of packing, decorating wasn’t a priority, but the Martin kids insisted Carrie and David put up their favorite tree. It’s adorned with ornaments given to the children by their grandparents with specific ties to each child and what
Our customers like getting the notes from us. They know we were in their box.” -Carrie Martin
family business operation and attitude. Each box has a thank you note from the Martins. “Our customers like getting the notes from us,” Carrie said. “They know we were in their box.” While Carrie has an eye for seasonal and home décor, she doesn’t pride herself on being able to piece it all together in her home. She credits her friend Rachel Wiygul with taking Trendy Tree product and creating beautiful scenes throughout her house. There is a mix of eclectic Christmas decorations, which is more Carrie’s style, and traditional pieces, which are more Jeannie’s
they’ve experienced that year. Maggie has a cheerleader ornament. Matt has a peanut butter and jelly one and AJ has a golf ball. “It’s very sentimental to them,” Carrie said. “And not something I would’ve ever thought they would really care about, but they’ll all three stand and just look at it.” In December, before this year’s Christmas festivities, Carrie, David and Jeannie will head to market to buy inventory for Christmas 2017. Trendy Tree has recently been invited to sell on the Walmart marketplace, a sign this Pontotoc-based business is on this rise. M

So do you like your Christmas trees real or artificial? By “real,” we’re talking about live trees – or recently cut trees, anyway, that once were firmly rooted in the ground, as opposed to the artificial trees found inside a box in a big-box store. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, folks who put up trees during Christmas choose real ones nearly two to one over what the organization calls “fake” trees. In 2014, the most recent figures available, Americans bought more than 26 million real trees, compared to 13.9 million artificial ones. In dollar figures, we spent just over $1 billion on the live trees and nearly $1.2 billion on the not-so-live ones. Worthey Tree Farm is one of a few in Mississippi, and one of only two in the northeast part of the state, doing its part to keep a tradition going. For about four weeks – from mid-November to midDecember – Lowell Worthey and his family open their farm to thousands of visitors to select their trees for the holiday. Worthey has plenty of them, too. On about 14 acres are some 5,000 trees, mostly Leyland cypress, Murray cypress and Blue Ice varieties. And Worthey’s family takes care of each and every one of them because one day, the trees will end up in a home or office. Worthey’s Tree Farm opened five years ago, a year after the nearby Gray’s Christmas Farm closed following the retirement of its owners. 42

Lowell Worthey was more than willing to take the mantle and continue the tradition. “I worked at Gray’s tree farm, starting when I was 14 or 15,” said Lowell, now 44. “We think the world of them, and once they decided to retire, we decided to take over. They’ve been like a mentor to us, helping along when we first planted.” Getting into the Christmas tree-growing business takes patience and hard work. Worthey planted his first trees in 2007, four years before having a single customer. “We planted them and grew them for that time, trimming them and watering them the whole time. There’s a lot of prep work involved. ... you just don’t plant trees and say you’re going to sell them.” There’s also fertilizing and watering. During the spring, the work isn’t that bad. During summer, when the heat and humidity are unbearable, the work still has to be done. For 10 months of the year, after work and after church, Worthey and his family are tending their trees. They take January off before getting ready to start the process over in February. Then it’s non-stop until the end of the year. But there’s pretty reliable help around, too. “It’s definitely a family business - my wife, Linda, helps, as do our two children, Carter and Alaina, who grew up in it, too. They work in the summer and throughout the season.”

Tag, Cut and Frock
Like other tree farms, there’s a process for customers in picking out a tree. Typically, a week before Thanksgiving, customers go to the farm and select a tree. It’s called “tagging,” because the customer’s name is written on a tag, which also has the height and price of the tree. The tag is tied to the tree for customers to return and get them. After tagging a tree, customers come back after Thanksgiving to either cut the trees themselves or let someone from the farm do it. The trees can be placed on a stand if the customers desire, and the trees also can be “flocked.” Flocking a tree means putting artificial snow on it. Many nurseries use Christmas tree flocking made from cellulose or cotton fibers, water, spray adhesive and, in many cases, a fire retardant. It comes in a variety of colors, and often has a sparkly material, like mica or glitter, mixed in to give it a more snow-like appearance. But the farm has more than trees for sale. At Worthey’s, there’s also a gift shop with handmade wreaths and garlands, along with Christmas accessories and collectibles. There’s a concession stand with hot chocolate and coffee. And there are miniature horses, giant inflatables and sleigh rides (pulled by a tractor, not the horses) for the kids, big and small. And while the Leyland Cypress and Blue Ice trees are the top sellers, Worthey also gets a shipment of fresh-cut Douglas firs from North Carolina. “We want people to come out and have a great family experience, back like they used to,” Lowell Worthey said. “It’s a fun day with no stress, just having a good time.”
More Trees Needed
Only about three acres at a time are opened up for sale each year, giving time for the trees in other fields to grow. That still leaves about 1,000 trees for sale during the prime selling time.
Typically, most of the trees are sold. “We have nearly 5,000 trees in different stages, and every year have to plan,” Worthey said. “You can’t just get more right away, you have to plan, then wait for them to grow. Business has been really good, and we’re trying to add more trees.” By the way, the trees start at $30 for a 6-foot tree, $40 for a 7-footer, $50 for an 8-footer. “We try to keep everything below $70,” he said. At Worthey’s, trees between 7 and 9 feet are the best-sellers. There’s also a demand for 12-foot trees and taller, but they’re rare commodities. “When we first started, we had a lot of 11- and 12-foot trees, but now we can’t grow them fast enough to save them. We try to put more back. We have several at 10 feet, a few at 11 and maybe a 12, but not many.” Because so many trees are sold each year, taller trees are harder to get. The trees are sheared and shaped twice a year, and also get “painted” to get a deeper shade of green on them. By the time late November rolls around, Worthey explained, even evergreens show a little discoloration, usually because a frost or two has happened. But the trees get more than a coat of color – they also get a mix of fertilizer and a protective coat. And all 5,000 trees get the same treatment. “It is a lot of work,” Worthey said. “You’ve got to have people to do the work, enough land to work with, and, you have to have the want-to, the knowledge it takes. This is not a corn crop. You have to plan far ahead. ... and it’s a gamble every day. There might be a lack of rain, like we’ve had lately, or you might have too much. You never know. But, he said, he wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s all worth it. You see kids playing, the sleigh running, you get up every day and people have this tradition now and bring them to the farm. They come the same time very year. They bring their children and then they, in turn, bring their children. It’s just a fun business. I’m 44 and now the kids I used to see come to Gray’s, they’re bringing their kids and grandkids here.” M Photos by Lauren Wood

Natchitoches (pronounced: Nak-a-tish)
Whether you’re interested in the rich history and culture of the city, browsing the modern and antiques shops or tasting the famous meat pies, the city of Natchitoches, Louisiana, has something to offer. By Hannah Richardson 48
l

Natchitoches (pronounced Nak-A-Tish), located in the northwest area of the state and along the Cane River, was established in 1714 by adventurer and entrepreneur Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, also making the site the first European settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase. Natchitoches was named after the indigenous Natchitoches people. As well as being the oldest city in Louisiana, Natchitoches holds a unique blend of French, Spanish, African, American Indian and Creole culture and architecture. The city has become a popular travel destination with its one-of-a-kind community full of history, culture, shopping and much more. Natchitoches is home to the Cane River National Heritage Area, which is one of the two located in Louisiana. The area’s landscape, covering 35 miles along the Cane River, is one of the most picturesque stretches of plantation country in the
southern region of the United States. A few jewels in the crown of the heritage area include the St. Augustine Catholic Church, which was founded in 1803 as the first Roman Catholic Church established by and for people of color in the United States; the Melrose Plantation, which became an artist retreat in the last century, especially for famous painter Clementine Hunter; and Fort St. Jean Baptiste, a historic site that features a replica of the original fort located by the Cane River Lake. Located in the Historic District of Natchitoches, the American Cemetery is one of the oldest European burial grounds in the Louisiana Purchase, with tombstones marked as old as 1744. These are only a few destinations you can find in the Cane River National Heritage Area. The next time you visit Natchitoches, be sure to book a guided walking tour to take a look at what the city has to offer by calling the heritage area at (318) 356-5555 or

search www.CaneRiverNHA.org. Front Street is considered the “hub” in the city, and it’s there you can find some of the most popular shops around. The Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile boasts itself at the oldest general store in Louisiana, selling old-fashioned hardware, homeware, gifts and nostalgic toys. Cane River Kitchenware sells kitchen gifts, plus regional sauces and spices. The local clothing boutiques, such as The Hall Tree, Razzle Dazzle and Simply Chic Boutique, always have the latest “Southern belle couture” in stock. Don’t forget to stop by the Bathhouse Soapery, the best handmade bath and body boutique around. The soapery sells body scrubs, mineral bath salts, bath bombs and more. You might be feeling a bit peckish after a day full of stopping by the shops. Luckily, there are so many restaurants to choose from in the city. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and The Breakfast Nook serves the morning classics until closing time. Maglieaux’s on the Cane features a fine-dining experience with its Italian-Creole cuisine, along with live entertainment on the weekends. Mama’s Oyster House serves authentic Southern Louisiana meals, and Papa’s Bar & Grill offers a wide variety of poboys, fried seafood and steaks. Of course, you haven’t visited Natchitoches without grabbing a meat pie. The best pies are served a Lasyone’s, Home of the Famous Meat Pie. After visiting the city, if you’re not quite ready to leave, or you need another day to see more, don’t worry; there are plenty of bed and breakfasts from which to choose. Natchitoches has some exceptional B&B’s. The Good House offers queen beds and Jacuzzi tubs, is furnished with antiques and guests can enjoy the pool and patio as well as a continental breakfast. You can even stay in the famous Steel Magnolia House, which was featured in the 1989 comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias,” starring 50

Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton and Daryl Hannah. The historic home offers breakfast, WiFi, gardens and private baths. Northwestern State University is also located in Natchitoches. NSU is ranked as one of the most affordable colleges in the state, and the city offers students a lifestyle of relaxation when class is over. Often you’ll find students walking and chatting away on the riverbanks to wind down from studying. If you asked any of the locals in Natchitoches when the best time to visit, most will tell you the Festival of Lights is when the city is at its brightest - literally. Over 300,000 Christmas lights and 100 lighted set pieces adorn the riverbank and downtown Natchitoches every evening from Nov. 19 to Jan. 6. Events kick off Nov. 19 with “Turn on the Holidays,” an annual event that starts off the holiday season with the turning on of the Christmas lights. At almost every event (not just limited to the Christmas events), there will be musical entertainment and activities. More events will continue until Dec 3, the day of the Festival of Lights Christmas Parade, with the famous choreographed fireworks show that evening. Front Street will be especially lively every weekend until Jan. 6, but you can find something to celebrate the holiday season almost every day. Visit www.NatchitochesChristmas.com for a full list of Christmas-time events. The city of Natchitoches has much of what you’re looking for in a Southern city - a foundation built on history, but is not outdated. Locals who appreciate the beauty of the city come together to preserve it, but also know how to have a great time with the nightlife entertainment the city provides. Soak up all the city has to offer and you’re sure to have a memorable experience. M Photos by Hannah Richardson

Nostalgic Moments Sometimes it’s the smell of your grandmother’s cranberry sauce or a movie you and your family gathered to watch on December 24, but no matter your race, religion or background – everyone has memories of the holidays they still hold near and dear to them to this day. At this time of year, we reflect on those moments and memories that bring us closer together through the common ground we all experience. By W. Derek Russell
North Mississippi Symphony Orchestra executive director Lisa Martin:
“My favorite Christmas occurred when I was 6-years old. Mary Lou Retton was the first American to win the all-around in the summer Olympics and she was my hero. That Christmas, I received my favorite gift of all time: A Mary Lou Retton, long-sleeve American flag gymnastics leotard. I wore it every day. Every single day, under my clothes, for at least a full year. I remember asking Santa the next year for a replacement leotard because I had worn mine out. But much to my devastation, they didn’t make them anymore. It is, and always will be, my favorite childhood gift. That Christmas was also special because I had asked Santa Claus to see our first snow-filled Christmas. And lo and behold, he came through. Santa was really good to me in 1984. Christmas is my favorite time of year simply for the moments I spend with my family. My father is very traditional in the fact that he looks forward to watching “A Christmas Story” over and over again. And we always mark the Christmas season with the annual viewing of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” But for me, it’s not Christmas until you see Bing Crosby tap dancing with Danny Kaye in “White Christmas.”
City of Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton:
“Like most families, Christmas was always a special time for us growing up. My mother always went above and beyond for my brother and me to have a great Christmas. We have many silly traditions that continue to this day that make the holidays something to look forward to. As a child, the presents are at the top of the list, but as we get older, we appreciate that Christmas is, first and foremost, a time to celebrate the birth of Christ, our Lord and Savior.”

Boys and Girls Club of North Mississippi chief professional officer Zell Long:
“I am the youngest of 18 children my mother and father had. Three siblings died as infants, leaving 15 of us. Several of my older sisters and brothers were married and had children of their own before I was born. But, they all came home on Sundays for church and family dinners. Christmas was always my most memorable holiday. My dad and older brothers always found the perfect tree in the pastures, chopped it down and brought it home for us to decorate. As they got older and left home, and Dad got older, it was eventually my older brother, two older sisters and I that went to the pastures. Then, it was just my older sister, Alcola, and I. We were always amazed that the tree that was so perfect in the pasture was so big when we got it back home. Then, we would laugh as we trimmed one side too much and had to do the other side again. We never knew how much we lacked because we always knew that on Christmas, Santa would leave us a shoe box with apples, oranges, a box of raisins and nuts. I can’t remember other gifts, but I always knew that I would get that box of goodies. My dad had the most amazing bass voice, and he and his brother, my brother-in-law and his brother formed an acapella quartet. Music was always a part of my life. We never watched Christmas movies, but Dad loved “The Lawrence Welk Show.” I learned every song they sang during the Christmas holidays over the years. ”Silver Bells” and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” are still two of my favorites from childhood memories. My surviving eight siblings and I still celebrate Christmas together, along with four generations of off-springs. I love Christmas!”
Tupelo Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director Neal McCoy:
“My wife and I have a Christmas Eve tradition of attending the Candlelight Service at Harrisburg Baptist Church and retreating back to our house for food and fellowship with family and friends, before preparing for the big guy’s arrival that night. My wife took over hosting duties from my motherin-law a number of years ago, and while I begrudgingly help clean the house preparing for guests all day Christmas Eve, I know that it is worth it because it means so much to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with those you love the most. We always rush home after visiting with out-of-town friends at the candlelight service because it is a race to keep our 12-, 10- and 6-year olds in their nice clothes to get a picture in front of the Christmas tree and prepare for our guests’ arrival. We then say a prayer thanking God for our wonderful blessings and start with a large plate of food followed by grazing for a couple of hours until we are all miserable. The next morning begins with the wonder and delight of Santa’s delivery during the night and is usually followed by the opening of ridiculously over-secured packaging of children’s toys with screws. We then settle in to prepare for all of the stops to be made visiting grandparents and cousins from out of town that last late into Christmas night. There will always be a television on with some sort of college or NFL football game being played that lulls me to sleep from the late night and early morning.”
City of Tupelo director of development services Shane Hooper:
“My fondest memories are watching the Macy’s parade with my father and walking through the kitchen where my mother prepared dinner. Our house smelled like a handpoured holiday candle selection. I also enjoyed the presence of extended family. My parents have always treated everyone with open arms, respect and love. One holiday season I met five out-of-town college-age students selling books door to door on the day before Thanksgiving. After inquiring about their wellbeing, I quickly determined they were far from home and resolved to offer a commercial grade holiday. I knew Mom would have more than enough food and Dad would shower them with hospitality. I invited them to come back the next day and enjoy Thanksgiving with us. To my surprise they accepted the invitation and returned. They enjoyed our home and we fellowshipped in the true spirit of giving and love.”

Tupelo Community Theatre executive director Tom Booth:
“I grew up in the Wren community in an era of black and white televisions, two or three station choices and, of course, no remotes – very little decision was needed on what to watch and when to watch during the holidays. In fact, what I remember most from the 1960s were the animated Christmas shows like “Frosty the Snowman,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” I am sure I am opening myself for disdain from all those appalled, but I did not have any interest in those when I was a kid and still don’t today. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever watched any of them from beginning to end. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am sure they are delightful family fare and if one of my nieces or nephews wanted to watch them, I would be thrilled to do that because that is what a good uncle does. But personally, not for me. However the show that always captured my attention then, and still does today, is “It’s a Wonderful Life.” The story of longing for adventure but doing what is right for your family grabs me every time. The movie was nominated for six Academy Awards but only won one technical award and opened to mixed reviews in 1946. Bosley Crowther, writing for The New York Times, complimented some of the actors but concluded that "the weakness of this picture is the sentimentality of it.” Mr. Crowther, count this kid a huge fan of the sentimental. Family, love, loss, potential disaster, bumbling uncles, charming old homes that are falling part, cute kids, a gym with a swimming pool under the basketball court and, did I mention a very humorous Angel that can’t get it right? I’m sure we all question what our lives are worth at some point and if we really have any positive effect on people and our community. Jimmy Stewart’s portrayal of George made me smile when I was 10 and still does today. And, as a side note, the first play I directed in 1992, long before I worked at TCT, was the stage adaptation of this marvelous movie. I love that show, but first I loved that movie and never tire of watching it each year.”
The McCarty Company senior construction project manager Leslie Mart:
“When I hear the word Hanukkah I get a goofy smile on my face and my mouth starts to water. Just the single word Hanukkah brings to mind latkes and the lighting of the candles. The first night of Hanukkah is a time when our family and friends gather to tell the story of the Miracle of Lights. Children listen intently about how the Maccabees battled against Antiochus and the Syrians to take back the holy temple and won. While the Maccabees were putting the temple back together, they found only enough oil to burn in the eternal lamp, above the ark, for one day. But, by a miracle, the oil lasted eight days and nights until new oil could be refined. In remembrance of this miracle, candles are lit, one the first night, two the second night and so on until eight candles are burning brightly. I remember, so vividly, being a small child with my very own small menorah. My mom would light the shamash, or helper candle, on mine and my brother's menorahs and we would recite the blessings while lighting the candles with the shamash. Once I had my own family, I carried on the tradition with the telling of the story and my son having his own menorah. The next generation has now arrived and I have passed this on to my grandson with his own menorah. Whether we are together or Facetiming, new memories are being made as we recite the prayers together and light the candles. The first night was also when we would have the festive meal. Everyone sitting around the table, talking loud, laughing and having a good time. Mom had been in the kitchen most of the day preparing our feast and the house smell wonderful. Our dinner was typically made up of brisket, tzimmes (carrots, apples, raisins and sweet potatoes), homemade applesauce and latkes. Oh, my goodness! Latkes are these yummy, golden, fried potato pancakes that are crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. They are then fried in oil to represent the oil that burned miraculously for eight days. Some would place a dollop of homemade applesauce on top while others, like me, would slather them in sour cream. You just couldn't seem to get enough. Latkes are still one of my favorite things and always make me think of family and Hanukkah.” M 58

Kim Caron of the Caron Gallery
There was a time when the only subscription a person had was to a magazine or newspaper. Over time, with focus on specific markets and convenience, the subscription box made its way onto the scene. Whether you are a beauty supplies lover, want your dog to have new surprises every month or are interested in natural snacks, there is a box for you. Kim Caron and Jennifer Love of the Caron Gallery realized there was a void for the person who loves art and appreciates Mississippi-made items. After some thought on how they could fill that void, My Mississippi Art Box was born. Subscribers to the 10x10x2 art box may get a landscape painting, a piece of glasswork, pottery, mixed media or any piece from the variety of artists the gallery represents. “People may not be able to come in and buy a big painting, but they can get an original piece of artwork for less than $100,” said Caron. Sending out the inaugural box in January 2016, the box is distributed quarterly to subscribers through the mail for $79 each box. With around 45 artists represented at the gallery, they plan the year’s boxes to feature at least four, gauging how long it may take an artist to create 30 pieces for each of the boxes. Every box features a Mississippi artist and also contains a surprise from the gallery. The surprise can be anything from a T-shirt to another art piece. With attention to detail, the box includes cards with information on each artist featured, why the gallery selected the artist, as well as the idea behind the art box. “When you learn a little bit about the artists and their style and where they’re coming from, you appreciate the art so much
more,” said Caron. While most subscribers buy the box for themselves, the gallery promotes giving it as a gift. “This is for someone you always have a hard time finding something for, or someone who is an art lover,” Caron said. The gallery will wrap a gift certificate for My Mississippi Art Box and send it to the recipient with details on the process and what he/she should expect. If a person buys all four boxes at the beginning of the year, the gallery gives another bonus gift as an incentive. Whether the box is a gift or not, the Caron Gallery staff sees it as a way to expand an individual’s art horizons. Caron says some people may not want a big, funky piece above their couch, but a small piece that is unique and fun would be a quirky surprise in a home. For Caron, Love and the gallery staff, it’s time to evaluate feedback from this year’s subscribers and decide if they want to change it up a bit. But Caron feels they are on the right track and have a good thing going. “Some people really get intimidated going to museums and galleries and this is a way for them to break down those barriers to learn more about art,” Caron said. “It’s not about knowing art history or being an art expert. It’s about finding something you like. That’s the most important part.” For more on the box or to purchase the subscription, go to thecarongallery.com. M

He’s a son of the Delta soil, a student of its sights and shapes. Michael Satterfield has an Oxford mailing address these days, living and working in an old stable barn converted into one part residence, one part showroom and one part studio. But the family farm he grew up on remains an everyday influence. Inside Satterfield’s stable barn showroom are handmade shelves stacked high with rows of his stock-in-trade pottery. These pottery pieces reflect the place that shaped Satterfield as surely as he, in turn, shapes clay on a wheel. “I grew up seeing all these broken down barns, broken down shacks and things like that,” says Satterfield. “Those distressed characteristics are what I was drawn to. I’m still drawn to that in the texture of the glazes, the color of the glazes.” Now 32, Satterfield pursued undergraduate and graduate degrees in art, specializing in sculpture. Wood and iron were
his raw materials. Not until 2012 did he dive deep into pottery, working in the beginning from a two-car garage. Now, in 2016, Satterfield has his own studio, his pottery may be found in about 65 shops across the region and visitors from across the state have begun to trickle into his showroom. The up-and-coming artisan hopes to further transform the old barn he calls home into a destination location for pottery collectors and enthusiasts. “It’s been an amazing ride,” Satterfield says. “It is surreal for me a lot of times to think about what we’ve accomplished and how much we’ve grown.” Along the way, a solo effort has also transformed into a family business. Satterfield has brought on employees and collaborators to deal with increased demand, including his mudandmag.com

“ sister, Tara Satterfield. Dishware makes up the bulk of what Satterfield sells. After much experimentation with glazes, Satterfield has settled on several standard product colors. These colors include gumbo – a soft brown, pistachio green, indigo and even a “Hotty Toddy” collection of red and blue dishware. Then there’s the riverbottom line, which Satterfield still glazes with a brush (he dips the other pieces to ensure greater consistency). This handcrafted application allows for greater boldness and flair. “With the river bottom, I’m able to get the brush and experiment and be free,” Satterfield says. Even the dipped pieces, however, retain their own unpredictability, an unpredictability that sometimes catches even their maker by surprise. “I can do the same glaze application every single day, but I open the kiln and it’s kind of like Christmas every morning,” says Satterfield. “I open the kiln and there’s just all these little 90

treasures. It doesn’t matter how many times I do the same application, it comes out different.” In addition to dinnerware, Satterfield also produces figurines, ornaments and other decorational pieces. Though the art world may seem far removed from the farming fields he grew up around, Satterfield see kinship. After all, he still gets his hands dirty every day. “I like the manual labor part of it. At the end of the day, I’ve got dirt on me, I feel like I did something. That’s important to me,” Satterfield says. “The manual part of this, I guess, goes back to the farming.” Satterffield’s studio and showroom are at 31 County Road 348, Oxford, Mississippi. He welcomes visitors at the showroom who wish to see his pottery and place an order. Product photos are also available at satterfieldpottery.com.
