UM students pitch business ideas in CIE's Land Shark Tank

In room 108 of the Haley Barbour Center of Manufacturing Excellence Wednesday afternoon, the Center of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) held their Land Shark Tank Pitch Competition. The competition featured students from different majors around the university delivering original business ideas to a team of judges. The judges would then choose the idea in which they would be most willing to invest. The winner of the competition received a $1,000 prize that was added to her bursar account.

The CIE works to hold at least three of these pitch competitions each year. In the fall, the center hosts a business model competition. During the beginning of the spring semester, qualifiers for a regional business model competition are held. The winner of the regional competi-

We have seen people over the years who were not very comfortable with this presentation format come back again and again and grow into very comfortable and confident public speakers, and sometimes these students end up with great jobs, in no small part because of their public speaking skills.”

Students presented ideas that ranged from a social networking service specially geared toward people in the aviation industry to a heated backpack to a cell phone application that would allow you to book a bodyguard for the night and much more. The students presenting were not allowed to use PowerPoint presentation to help illustrate their points. They were allowed to bring props with them if needed and given two minutes to explain their idea.

Senior integrated marking communications major Ferderica Cobb was declared the winner of the pitching contest. She has been involved with the CIE for about a year now and loves learning more about what it takes to turn an idea into a profitable business.

“I’ve been involved in the Entrepreneurship Club at the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the past year or so and I really enjoy the opportunities they offer to learn more about the business world and the practical applications what I’m learning in my business classes,” Cobb said after the competition.

“It’s taught me a lot about the whole process and I’m learning so much about what it takes to turn and idea into a business.”

Cobb presented her idea for a 24-hour coffee shop that would be named Cup All Night. She started considering the idea about a year ago when she noticed that there was no place around town for students to study all hours of the night. It is niche in the market that she hopes to one day help fill.

“I came up with this idea during my junior year,” Cobb said. “I just figured that the library closes at a certain time, Starbucks closes at a certain time, so starting an all night coffee shop will solve two problems for students: you can have your caffeine to stay up and study and focus, and then you have a nice setting, a cozy place to study.

You can come alone or have a space to work with friends on a group project.

I just figured this would be able to knock out several birds with one stone and be a huge attraction to college students, not just here in Oxford, but in other college towns as well.”

Cobb's early plans for the business are to work to establish the first shop and then overtime expand to different SEC schools and eventually college towns around the country.

She said that she has a few business ideas, but seeing how well Cup All Night performed at this pitching competition, she will be pitching the idea in the spring during the Gillespie Business Plan Competition in the hopes of claiming the $10,000 prize to get started. chaning.green@journalinc.com Twitter: @chaningthegreen

‘The Royal Family’ coming to the Ford Center

This weekend the Gertrude C. Ford Center at the University of Mississippi will be hosting a production of Princeton James’ original play, “The Royal Family.”

The play focuses on the lives of the King family.

During the play, members of the King family experiencing a lot of issues facing families in the modern era, according to James, who wrote the play. Those problems include the abuse of social media, loveless marriages, financial struggles and much more.

“It’s a family oriented

story that focuses on a lot of different issues that aren’t typically brought to the forefront,” said James, “but these issues are there and present in our everyday lives. It’s very relative to the issues going on right now in America and individual families across the country.

It teaches about dealing with those issues through forgiveness and communication.”

This is James’ first venture as a writer. He has been performing as an actor for the past four years, but was soon pushed to write the play. At the end of May of this year, he sat down and wrote the entire first half of the play in one day. He

walked away from it for a bit, and at the end of June, returned and penned the entirety of the second half in a day as well. The day he finished the play was the day of the first rehearsal.

James said that he was called to write the play, and that he fought that calling at first. Eventually, he realized this is what he needed to do.

“It was clear vision from God,” James said when ask what inspired him to write the play. “It was a vision I couldn’t run from any longer. I prayed about it about it. I think people out there are suffering because you aren’t operating with their gift. That was basically

the message that pushed me to write the play.”

Before writing the play, James held a 9-to-5 job based in Atlanta where he was working as a regional financial representative for a major paint manufacturing company. He said he left his job in order to fully commit to writing the play and making sure it got produced. He was going to do everything he could to see his work on stage.

So far, the play has been a success. James and the cast and crew premiered the play in August, holding three performances. In September, due to popular demand, they returned to put on a two additional

productions of the show.

The performance being held at the Ford Center this weekend will be the cast’s sixth performance.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Tau Eta Chapter Alumni are holding their 40-year reunion the weekend. The sorority, along with the Ole Miss Alumni Council invited James and his crew to the university to perform.

At the beginning of the year, James had a full time job with a Fortune 500 company and now he is a traveling playwright, around the region to promote and produce a play to teach the world how to love one another.

“It feels amazing,” James said when asked what it was like to be where he is right now. “I finally feel like I am living my purpose through this. It’s alive right now because of the response of it. It’s so fast, it’s been a lot of work. It’s been nonstop work. It’s been a learning experience and a lot of work, but a blessing, overall. It’s all been such a complete blessing.”

The Oxford Lafayette Chamber of Commerce is getting ready to mount their annual campaign calling for citizens to support local business with their Shop Oxford initiative.

Shop Oxford is actually a campaign that the Chamber maintains year round, but they really work to drive home the message beginning in November when many residents begin making preparations for their

holiday shopping. With Oxford’s central location in the North Mississippi, many Oxonians drive to Memphis or Tupelo to do much of their holiday shopping. The convenience of online shopping also provides a challenge when local vendors are trying to get more people in their stores.

Pam Swain serves as senior vice president for the Chamber and oversees the initiative. She said that Shop Oxford just wants to promote the straightforward idea that shopping local

should be everyone’s first choice. She made the point that by going out of town and shopping, the taxes people are paying on each item go toward improving a municipality that is not Oxford.

“Many shoppers don’t really consider the fact that the tax dollars collected from the things that they buy go directly into the city funds, which in turn helps to continue to fund services like our roadways across the community,” Swain said.

“We want to make sure we keep those tax dollars local so that improvements can be made and services can continue in what we already

know is a growing community."

The Chamber first began pushing Shop Oxford around 2000. Throughout the year, Shop Oxford’s presence is maintained primarily through social media.

But as the holiday season draws near, Swain and the rest of the Chamber also promote the cause via local media with newspaper ads and interviews on local new stations and radio programs.

Every year, just before Thanksgiving, the Chamber publishes a booklet showing different gift ideas that can be purchased in Oxford for under $50. The booklet is distributed by the Chamber in order to highlight the different buying options around town, and to help people understand that they can accomplish most, if not all, of their holiday shopping right here in town.

“We started doing this because one of the most frequent responses to Shop

Oxford was people saying they couldn’t afford to shop in Oxford, but you can,” Swain said. “We want people to remember that if they can shop online or out of town, they can afford to shop local.

We want to provide people with this list to make shopping here at home that much of an easier choice.”

Swain went on to say that, when you get right down to it, shopping local supports businesses that often go on to sponsor a variety of different things around the community. Those include community organizations, activities, fundraisers and sporting leagues that local children participate in year round. Hedberg urges Millenials to vote on Tuesday Sydney Hedberg, Ole Miss Finance and Risk Management alum and author of Barneys, Bergdorfs and Bills, weighs in on why Millennials should care about the election with Oxford Citizen staff writer Kathryn Winter.

KATHRYN WINTER: Why should Millennials care about this election?

SYDNEY HEDBERG: The big thing is millennials have a lot more years left than older generations so we really need to consider who is elected in less than a week as more than just an annoying election because it is (there's no if about it) going to effect us for much more than just four years. The Supreme Court is the best way to show this. There potentially will be three Supreme Court appointments in the next four years. A Supreme Court seats isn't two or four years...it's for life.

WINTER: Why do you think this election is so significant?

HEDBERG: A huge issue that has been dwarfed by this circus of the presidential election are the down ballot races, that includes both Congressional as well as your local elections. All House seats are up for election as well as Senate, that is a total of 469 seats.

How many times have you heard about this? Very few if I had to guess. Congress is currently controlled by the Republicans and the consensus is that the Republicans will maintain the House but may lose the Senate. A divided Congress means very little gets done. Another thing is, down ballot races (your local races) can have a much larger effect on your life than the national election. Do you know who is running in your county?

It's all about being an informed voter and it takes work.

HEDBERG: Millennials have lost interest, like many, because lots feel as if this is all kind of a joke.

The standard deviation of both candidates is pretty high which they dislike.

Also, many supported Bernie Sanders.

WINTER: Why do you think Bernie connected so well with millennial voters?

HEDBERG: They liked that he was "anti-establishment"...as is Donald Trump but many don't feel they relate to him in the same way. They also believe the whole system is corrupt. Things like the revelations about Donna Brazile leaking debate questions to the Clinton camp just aided their argument.

WINTER: How do you think the media has impacted this election?

HEDBERG: The media has always tilted left, but there definitely are quite a few individuals on networks who present the facts with no bias. They don't spin it. But the media loves a scandal. It's more intriguing to discuss Clinton's emails or Trump's video with Billy Bush than issue specifics or down ballot races.

WINTER: What do you think about the debates?

HEDBERG: I thought the third debate in Vegas was the best. This was where we actually saw some detailed specifics on their plans shall they win the White House. The first and second were fairly painful in my opinion. Debates like the first two are a perfect show of why people are so ready for November 8th to just be here already.

This has seemed like the million year race.

WINTER: How will the new president affect the markets?

HEDBERG: I've been attending quite a few conferences with hedge fund guys in NYC and the general consensus is markets LOVE stability. Markets probably will end the year down. I believe it will fall no matter who wins just because of the unknown for the future. We are in what is known as a "bull" market and I believe it will continue into 2017, but will definitely fall post election. Nothing is for sure though, I wish I was smart enough to be able to predict that!

HEDBERG: Not voting is not the answer. It is your duty to vote, especially when we are this country's future. Think about countries where citizens have no vote. Regardless of different views, your vote does count. And as discussed above, if you simply choose not to vote for president because you dislike them both, then you are also abandoning your community and the other elections taking place.

WINTER: What are some of the differences or trends you see between young voters in Oxford vs New York?

HEDBERG: This presidential election has been very interesting in the city because it's New York vs.

New York. It's very divided up here, but mass majority support Clinton and will vote Democrat down ballot. Oxford: I've never seen so many Trump-Pence stickers in my life. You will not see many ClintonKaine's down south. I love that us young people are talking about this race no matter the location, I just wish we had better things to discuss.

Steve Thomas' magic has been dazzling families for decades

To adults and children across North Mississippi and a few other places, Steve Thomas is known simply as the Balloon Guy. In addition to being the Balloon Guy, he is known, and has been for many years, as Steve Thomas: Magician & Illusionist. Thomas has been performing magic since he was a young child.

When he was 9 years old, he had his first paid gig with a classmate. He and another boy realized they were both into magic and decided to team up. They were asked to put on a show at a child’s birthday party. Thomas and his partner performed the show and the child’s mother paid each of them afterwards. He said that he didn't remember if it was $5 or $10, and it didn’t matter.

That he day he fell in love with magic and performing.

Nearly four decades later, Thomas is still performing.

Birthday parties, corporate candy stores, events, restaurants and any other event or venue he is requested at. He has been intertwined with the art form pretty much his entire life, regardless of the day job or other professional venture he found himself in, he was usually doing magic on the side. He took a brief hiatus for a few years when he was running a radio station in Tupelo, but didn’t stay away from it for very long.

“There was a period there when most of my stuff was in storage,” Thomas said. “I was trying to adult for a little while. Then one day, I went in my dad’s shed I saw

About 15 years ago, Thomas had a regular gig doing shows at Pizza Huts in the area for their weekly Kids’ Nights. It was here that he was getting much younger kids coming to see him perform, and they were a lot harder to impress with

magic. He picked up balloon art and would do just a little of that during his magic shows, switching back and forth between the two activities during his performance. Many times, the kids were more interested in the balloons. They are brightly colored, the kids could physically touch them and it gave people something they could actually take away from the

show. Ever since then, Thomas has been working with them at nearly every show.

During every performance, Thomas works to entertain with comedy as well as his illusionary abilities.

He prefers performing for an audience made of people of all ages. The magic has to be fun and flashy enough to hold the kids’ attention and yet impressive

and witty enough to make sure the adults stay entertained as well. It keeps him on his toes and makes for a better show.

He said that his routines are constantly changing and evolving. He’s always looking to learn new magic, impress more people and just continue to grow as a performer.

“This job is so fluid; it’s always changing,” Thomas

said when asked what he loves about his job. “There’s always something new to learn and a new angle to take. The only thing about my shows I haven’t changed over the years is the kind of magic I do, the way I combine comedy and magic together in a show. I’m not one of those guys in a tuxedo who pulls birds out of his underwear. That’s not my style.”

Thomas said that he has been in the business so long at this point that he’s performed for generations of clients. People have called him or seen him around town and say, "Hey, you performed at my birthday party when I was 5 years old. Can you come to my son’s 6th birthday next week?" These kinds of interactions can make the Balloon Guy feel a little old sometimes, but he loves it.

He loves his job and that he has the opportunity to bring joy to so many different people through his work.

“I don’t really think I have a favorite part about this job,” Thomas said. “If I had to pick, I guess it would be every time a kid laughs or smiles or when one stands up and says ‘Wow. You’re great,’ in the middle of one of my shows. That’s what I live for. You give them a balloon and a kid smiles at you and tells you you’re awesome. It makes your whole day. You go home smiling and go to sleep happy.”

Akeem Judd complemented Kelly with 26 carries for 139 yards and a touchdown. Judd’s 9-yard run with 3:36 left in the first half was the score that put the Rebels on top to stay. Kelly’s lone touchdown pass to Evan Engram – which covered 38 yards – gave the Rebels a 31-21 lead at halftime. Kelly also added a rushing touchdown in the win.

The Oxford Chargers took first in Saturday's MHSAA Class 5A state cross country meet held at Choctaw Trails in Clinton.

I

t's not in the nature of Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco to do many things at the spur of the moment, let alone travel hours away from home without much of a plan. But when you get two tickets to Game 6 of the World Series from one of your former players, exceptions can be made.

Bianco and his son Drew were in Cleveland, Ohio at Progressive Field when the Chicago Cubs won Game 6 this past Tuesday. Former Ole Miss infielder Chris Coghlan is a member of the Cubs, who went on to win the title for the first time since 1908.

Bianco found out about the tickets when he woke up last Monday morning. Coghlan had promised him tickets if the Cubs made it that far in the past, but Coghlan also has a large family that wanted to take part in the historic series as well. Bianco's son is a big Cubs fan, so when the opportunity came, the decision to attend was made, despite the cost, and almost no time to plan the trip.

“It's the pinnacle of our sport. It's the greatest players in the world playing in a championship series,” Bianco said. “I had never been to a World Series game or a Super Bowl or an NBA championship but it's much like you would imagine. It was two great cities, two great teams with a lot of subplots and a lot of history. I was still a little taken back when we walked into the stadium. It opened at 5:30 eastern time and it was about two and a half hours before the game and Cleveland was just finishing up batting practice. There were standing room seats and a lot of people trying to get into the gates at that time. You look down at the field, and there was just so much media, from foul pole to foul pole and wrapping around the cage at home plate all the way back down the first base line. Champion Chargers Oxford claims 5A state title in cross country

CLINTON — Ever since the Oxford Chargers were denied the MHSAA Class 5A cross country title a fall ago, the drive has been to finish first in 2016. That mission has now been accomplished.

For the second time in three seasons, the Chargers are the top cross country team in the state in their class. Oxford easily won its latest title, scoring just 36 points compared to Brookhaven’s second-place total of 75.

Five Chargers earned allstate recognition, which means they finished in the top 14 of all the runners who took part in the meet. After a two-year hiatus from cross country due to injuries, Kyle Rock was the top Oxford finisher with a time of 17 minutes. He finished third overall in the race to earn a bronze medal for his efforts. Joining Rock as all-state performers

Oxford's Lady Chargers finished second in the MHSAA Class 5A state cross country meet Saturday. were Jonathan Tyler, John Owen Yoste, Malik Lawson and Chip Powell. Tyler, Yoste and Lawson all finished in the top eight. Powell was 12th overall.

“I never even dreamed of being here. I can’t even express how happy I am for this team, how much they deserve this,” Rock said. “When

Quarles, Lafayette run over Shannon in 4A playoff opener

Another week, another opponent crushed up front, on both sides of the ball, for the Lafayette Commodores. This time it was Shannon's Red Raiders who felt the blow, and the sting, of defeat for the last time in 2016.

For the ninth straight week, the Commodores walked off a football field with smiles instead of frowns.

The opening round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs went according to plan Friday night as the Commodores steam rolled the Red Raiders, 44-0.

Jamarcus Quarles looked like former Dallas Cowboy standout Tony Dorsett in the third quarter as he broke out of a pile and went 99 yards for a touchdown.

The run brought the crowd at William L. Buford Stadium to their feet, and sent the Lafayette sideline into celebration mode. Quarles punctuated the overall feel of the game in one run.

Dominant.

“We drew that play up at halftime and we thought if we got the right defense on the short-yardage thing, we thought we could bust it,” LHS coach Michael Fair said. “What separates Jamarcus from a lot of backs is a lot of running backs can bust for a long run, but they usually can't finish the run like that. They had a back side corner and a safety that had the angle and he just out ran the angle.

That's what makes him special. He's a threat to score on every single play.”

There was no need to sweat if you wore red and gold. The Commodores (92 overall) took control early.

They stuffed Shannon's opening drive on offense and then let Quarles loose.

On his second carry of the game, he was in the end zone with a 46-yard run that featured more than a couple of impressive cuts.

Who knew then that wouldn't even be his best effort of the night.

Lafayette clamped down on Shannon's offense while the running game, and quarterback Will Ard, did its part. By the end of the first quarter, the Commodores were up 14-0, and at the

In a season that has featured some big wins, and a division title earned for LHS, Friday's victory was as complete as any.

“Especially here lately.

Towards the end of our district play, I thought we got kind of sloppy on a couple of things,” Fair said. “We really worked hard on cleaning up ball security and special teams and things like that and I thought you could see that tonight, the things we've been working on. The techniques and the fundamentals really came into play tonight. I thought it was a real clean game for us.”

Too many mistakes, penalties cost Chargers against Gators

LAKE CORMORANT — Three turnovers, 14 penalties, and just 4 yards rushing was just a fraction of what hurt the Oxford Chargers in their 31-20 defeat to the Lake Cormorant Gators Friday night.

The loss gives Oxford (74 overall, 5-2 in Division 15A) the No. 3 seed in the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs and will travel to Grenada next week in the first round.

Lake Cormorant (8-4, 61) secures the No. 2 seed and its first playoff game at home when the Gators host Vicksburg next week.

The mistakes weren't because of the OHS secondary, which forced all five takeaways the team had on

the night. Devin Rockette picked off backup quarterback Will Guest on the opening drive of the game and ran it back 81 yards to give Oxford an early 6-0 lead.

After a safety gave Lake Cormorant the ball back, it was DQ Thomas' turn to pick off Guest and he took it 61 yards back for a score to give Oxford a 13-2 lead with 9:03 left in the second quarter.

“We always talk about our defense about trying to create points,” Oxford coach Chris Cutcliffe said regarding Oxford's two defensive touchdowns. “We made a lot of big plays defensively with turnovers, I was really proud of that.”

On the ensuing drive, Lake Cormorant moved the ball 67 yards on seven plays

and capped it with a 44yard Guest pass to Iowa State commitment Brandon Smith to cut the Charger lead to 13-8 midway in the second quarter.

On the next Gator drive, after an Oxford punt, Guest found Smith again from 6 yards out to give Lake Cormorant a 15-13 lead going into halftime.

“We didn't execute on defense a lot,” Cutcliffe said. “Offensively, we really struggled to get anything going in the first half. We came out and played a little better in the second half, just still couldn't put anything together consistently, we had way too many penalties.”

Oxford was able to put some points on the board on offense in the opening possession of the second

half, driving 70 yards on six plays. Quarterback John Reece McClure capped the drive when he found JaQuan Webb from 6 yards.

It enabled Oxford to re-take the lead at 20-15.

Oxford offense continued to sputter despite the touchdown. The Chargers surrendered the lead on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Tryen Irby to give the Gators a 21-20 lead late in the third quarter.

The Gator offense then turned to the ground game and running back Brian Jackson, who put the team on his back early in the fourth quarter with an eight play, 53-yard drive capped with a Jackson 6yard touchdown run. That give the Gators a 28-20 cushion. A Houston Coyle 24-yard field goal in the

closing minutes iced the game for the Gators.

“They did run the ball pretty well at times,” Cutcliffe said. “That is something we definitely got to look at. Some of it was alignment problems; some of it was fundamentals.

Those things are all correctable and things we will look at and work on in practice next week.”

Cutcliffe hasn't seen much film on Grenada, but the Chargers down Highway 7 are expected to be a stiff challenge for Oxford's Chargers.

“Their reputation is they play great defense and a physical running game. It's definitely going to be a challenge,” Cutcliffe said.

Quentin Wilfawn made history by breaking Will Britt's single-season tackle record of 155. Wilfawn recorded 11 tackles to give him 160 on the season.

Cutcliffe praised about Wilfawn's qualities and hard work off the field and has the notice of his teammates.

“Quentin is a great person, he's an outstanding student,” Cutcliffe said.

“I'm so proud of him on and off the field. On the field he is so consistent. You always know exactly what you are going to get from Quentin and that's everything he's got. His teammates know that as well and he has the respect of his teammates because of that.”

With the game well out of hand, the Red Raiders drove all the way to the Lafayette 1-yard line only to be turned away with a goal-line stand. Shannon came into the contest as an opponent that could throw the ball around, and light up a scoreboard. None of its wide receivers wanted to tangle with the Lafayette defensive backs, who hit early and often and made Shannon's skill players worry about them more than catching the ball.

“There early they threw it and our guys came across and kind of finished the play up. Our guys don't shy away from much contact, especially our defensive guys,” Fair said.

“Coach (Ben) Ashley did a tremendous job of game planning. There were times where we were in three or four different fronts depending on personnel and things like that.

He always does a great job with that and always has our guys lined up in the right position. They played really hard tonight. They

A number of different Commodores scored in the blowout. Offensive tackle Matt Toles had a 4yard run into the end zone in the third quarter to make it 28-0, while defensive end Cory Williams

snagged a pass out of the sky on a screen and returned it for a touchdown.

That also came in the third quarter to make the game a real laugher.

“We work on screen defense all the time. We're a hard team to screen, or we want to be anyway,” Fair said. “They do it in practice all the time. Then you

saw Matt Toles the touchdown. That's something we practice all the time.

That's what is fun about a football season. The more you play, the more you're able to see stuff that we've been working on since day one. When we lined up and gave it Sausage (Toles) there at the end, we've been working that for a

long time. I'm glad we got to use it.”

Williams said he didn't know that he was going to score when he caught the interception, but he did feel good running the ball.

“I learned from the best, Quarles,” Jamarcus Williams said with a smile.

“We played well, we just have to get better though

for the next round. I think they got too many yards. I am happy with the shutout, we just have to get better.”

Up next for Lafayette is a second meeting with Louisville at home in the second round.

Impressive run, night earns Quarles POW honor from LHS

By the time the second half started Friday night, Jamarcus Quarles had already done his part to help the Lafayette Commodores earn a win over Shannon in the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs. He scored the game's first touchdown on an impressive 46-yard run. He also had 65 yards on just seven carries and the Commodores were well in control at 21-0.

All of that wasn't enough for Quarles, and his offensive mates, as he exploded for a 99-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter. The jaunt was beyond impressive. It punctuated everything

Lafayette had done to that point of the contest. Quarles, this week's Player of the Week from LHS, finished with 180 yards on just 10 carries. Before the play happened, Quarles was told by the coaches that he needed to make sure to get out of the end zone and avoid a safety with the Commodores on the threshold of their own end zone.

“I just followed the hole and when I saw the hole, I just hit it. Full throttle,” said Quarles, who is nearing 2,000 yards this year on the ground. “I thought the defender was going to chase me down until I looked over my right shoulder. I cut diagonally and went into the end zone. I was very deter-

mined to get into the end zone. My teammates said don't fall because I usually fall when I'm in a pile or something like that.”

Lafayette defensive end Cory Williams, who had an impressive return for a score as well, just shook his head about the 99-yard run.

“I knew he was going to score, I just knew it,” Williams said.

Quarles said the win over Shannon was big for the team, adding that head coach Michael Fair always tells them that hard work pays off. As for the offense, Quarles was pleased with how things clicked overall.

“We were really good on offense. It was a good challenge. Our offense and defense likes to be

challenged because without challenges, in the future, you won't know how hard games and hard battles feel,” Quarles said. “We just have to keep preparing for what is to come in the future. You never know what is going to come.”

In order to gain 99 yards on one carry, the LHS defense had to hold out Shannon from scoring.

“They were on point all night. They executed on tackles, hitting the holes they were supposed to, chasing down the quarterback,” Quarles said. “They worked all day and all night. Coach preached everyday about defense.”

Mott upbeat about OM Rebels heading into 2017 season

A yo-yo tied to a string is how Matt Mott helped describe the 2016 soccer season for his Ole Miss Rebels.

There were some high moments during the year, and also some points where the team just didn't get any breaks to help out.

“We had some very good wins and some really difficult losses. It was a season where we didn't get any bounces, we didn't get any luck from an injury standpoint,” Mott said. “Our team battled right to the end. We were playing our best soccer towards the end of the season. If you look at our performance against South Carolina and Tennessee, we were really playing well. It was unfortunate that both games didn't go our way. I'm proud of the team, I'm proud of the girls.

The senior class was a special, special group that came in as freshmen and helped change our program and helped change our culture. They have been fantastic and I appreciate every one of them.”

Rock added he didn’t want to do anything crazy or different than what he had been doing in the previous meets of the season.

“Everything we were doing during the season was all working and today wasn’t about time, it was all about where we placed. We have been beating our competition, so I wasn’t trying to pull any insane personal record or anything,” Rock said. “I just wanted to make sure I did my job and everyone else do their job and come out with this win, which we did.”

“We had some great wins and it was certainly great to beat Texas A&M at home on Senior Night. It was kind of payback for them ending our season last year,” Mott said. “Beating Kentucky at Kentucky with Alley Houghton scoring was great. This senior class going where they never lost to Auburn, never lost to Alabama or Mississippi State is pretty awesome.”

Mott was set to recruit today and then early next week as he works on the future. The team will have to replace a big senior class, including Addie Forbus, Gretchen Harknett, who was named second team All-SEC, as well as Melissa Capocaccia. All three started their entire career. could be way back in the summer during training.

“They exceeded my expectations today actually,” Patton said. “I knew we were going to come and compete. It was a misfortune that we didn’t get it last year, but they’re tough kids and they’ve been on a mission to come back and win a state championship.

I couldn’t be prouder of those guys.”

Tyler wrapped up his final meet in high school in style, calling the win bittersweet because of it being his last race and that the seniors of last year weren’t able to feel the same thing he was.

“I just wanted to do it for these coaches because they mean the world to me,” Tyler said. “It’s great to bounce back. It was tough to take last year and losing two seniors that we loved dearly. Coming back now, it’s a great feeling, really awesome.”

“We're going to need some incoming kids to step up and some kids that are on the roster to step up. I think it's kind of a total team makeover a little bit,” Mott said. “We have to be better up front certainly.

CeCe Kizer was injured the last seven games of the year. She was never at 100 percent, so we have to get her healthy. I'm real excited about the future. “I told the girls before we raced, in our team meeting (Friday) night, that in order to win, we have to be competitive. They were,” Patton said. “I told them I was going to be happy with their results, whatever it was, as long as they gave it their all. That’s what they did. I was proud of it. We were running with some nicks, some injuries, but they ran through it and fought. will sign in February are highly thought of by Mott, who added it was the best one he has ever had to this point.

“There are a number of them and they're going to be very good and very impactful and we're excited to get them in for sure,” Mott said. “From a team standpoint, they will be back in the weight room and they're out on the field two hours per week. We're just starting that off-season conditioning until we get back from Christmas and we get cranked back up into 20 hour weeks. This returning group is very motivated. We have another big senior class next year and that all will play and help.
