A season of frustration finally came to an end for the Ole Miss Rebels. An injury riddled roster was no match for the Mississippi State Bulldogs Saturday in the annual Egg Bowl. For the first time since 2013, the Bulldogs were able to hoist the Golden Egg over their heads. And for the first time since 2010, MSU was able to defeat the Rebels at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Mississippi State defeated Ole Miss 55-20 to end any chance for a bowl game for the Rebels, who finished 5-7 overall, the first losing season under coach Hugh Freeze.

MSU quarterback Nick Fitzgerald and running back Aeris Williams both ran all over the under manned Ole Miss defense to the tune of 449 yards combined.

“It feels fantastic. We're going to keep the trophy in Starkville for a while,” said Fitzgerald, who finished with 258 yards and two touchdowns while also passing for 109 yards and three touchdowns. “To come out on top in a game like this is awesome.”

State head coach Dan Mullen said he will enjoy the victory over the Rebels, his first over Freeze since 2013 and his second overall.

“I know this game means so much to the

people in the state of Mississippi. I'm so proud of this team and these seniors,” Mullen said. “I'm going to enjoy walking off the field with some momentum. We're going to enjoy it. Our guys never let that get them down. They just made plays.

These guys gave it everything they had and they did a great job tonight.”

Mississippi State finished the year with a 5-7 record but that didn't prevent the Bulldogs from spoiling the final home game of the season for the Rebels, who were without starting tight end Evan Engram as well as some other key starters. Even with the TURN TO EGG BOWL PAGE 9

Oxford Newcomers' Club welcomes new residents ton said when asked to describe his time with the club.

“It has opened so many doors for us. We probably have at least 20 close friends we met through the club and so many acquaintances. It’s just a great way to get to know people and join the community.”

There are currently around 320 members currently involved in the Oxford Newcomers’ Club. According to Clinton, approximately 70 people relocate to Lafayette County every month, and the club is only getting just a few of those people. He said that he wants to make sure the club is a welcoming place to everyone who moves to

For nearly two decades, the Oxford Newcomers’ Club has been welcoming new residents from all over the world to the Oxford and Lafayette community.

Eddie Clinton currently serves as president of the club. He and his wife joined in December of 2012 when the couple first moved to the area. His wife had a friend that lived in Oxford and it was she who suggested the two look into getting involved in the club. Once they moved here, they did just that.

As it stands now, the majority of the club is composed of retirees, but that group is diversifying more and more each month. Clinton said that they have members in the club that are in their mid20s as well as people in their mid-80s, as he thinks it should be. The Oxford Newcomers’ Club is meant for everyone, and they want to make sure they give everyone the opportunity to be a part of the community.

Twice a week the men of the club meet for breakfast at The Beacon on North Lamar Boulevard. The club has two active book clubs and they are now starting a third that

different parties and get-togethers, but he definitely has a favorite.

“My personal favorite is the men’s breakfasts on Monday and Thursday,” Clinton said. “I look forward to it every week. We meet there and have our own little private room there and we solve all of the world’s problems.

The club has always been part of the Oxford Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, but the organization is currently in the process of becoming their own independent nonprofit. Once established as an independent entity, the name will chance to Oxford Newcomers and Friends.

They schedule times to meet up at different restaurants around Oxford in order to better acquaint newcomers with local cuisine. The club also works to organize parties for every major holiday.

Clinton said that the club does all of these events to not only better acquaint new residents with the area, but to also give them a sense of community amongst themselves. Many of the people moving here do not know anyone. Clinton said the club wants to make sure everyone feels welcome and has the chance to build lasting relationships. He loves all of the

There are members still actively involved who joined 19 years ago when everything was first started.

UM Library hosts Native American Artifacts display

On the second floor of the J. D. Williams Library at the University of Mississippi sits a special exhibit honoring the lives and cultures of indigenous peoples across the North American continent.

The exhibit is a joint effort between different departments at the university.

From the library’s side were the Department of Research and Instruction, and the Archives and Special Collections. The artifacts were provided and curated by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, as well as the Center for Archaeological Research.

Items in the display cases on the second floor of the library are just a fraction of what is housed in the UM Archaeological Collections.

The collection was started at the university in 1917 by Calvin Brown and has been growing in the century since its creation. Brown was a modern languages profes-

private collections of individuals. These items were collected approximately between 1917 and 1934 and

compose the majority of the ogy and Anthropology and collection. The collection is consists of 1,300 boxes of arcurrently under the care of tifacts. the Department of SociolAssistant Professor of An-

thropology Maureen Meyers helped to curate the display in the library. She said she tried to pull artifacts from the collection that originated from different locations across the continent. The display includes woven baskets from California, a Zuni pot from the Southwest, beadwork from the Cherokee people and Lakota Sioux Tribes as well as items from Alaska that were collected by Water Valley native James Ford.

“What I love about this exhibit, and the collection it is sampled from, is the way it shows the diversity of Native Americans,” Meyers said.

“Natives are often portrayed as one unchanging group, all living the same way for a very ling time, when in actuality they were diverse and changed greatly over time.

The Oxford Square Alliance held their annual Holiday Open House this Friday to encourage shopping local, while celebrating the holiday season.The event featured the Oxford Civic Chorus on the steps of City Hall as well as a special Christmas tree lighting by Santa and Mrs. Claus. At the end of the night, a special drawing was held where the Alliance gave away $500 in gift certificates to be used on the Square.

UM Museum extends Eggleston exhibit

William Eggleston is a legend in the world of photography. His colorized photo collections first captivated the art world in the 1970s.

His work was some of the first examples of color photography being considered fine art, a connation previously carried exclusively by black and white photos.

The University Of Mississippi Museum opened a special exhibit honoring Eggleston’s work on Sept. 13, and due to the high level of interest the display has generated, the exhibit has been extended five weeks past its original closing date. Eggleston’s work will now be on display at the museum through mid-February.

The Friends of the Museum funded the Eggleston exhibit, which is named “The Beautiful Mysterious: The Extraordinary Gaze of William Eggleston.” His photos have hung on the walls of art galleries all over the world, from Paris to New York to Melbourne to Tokyo and numerous other locations across the globe.

Bill Ferris, who founded the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at Ole Miss. At some point of the course of their long friendship, Eggleston gifted Ferris with a large number of prints. Ferris then in turn donated the collection to the University Museum, and the photos have stayed in their archives since the '80s.

seum Robert Saarnio said that they have always wanted to show the photos in a massive display featuring all of the photos in the collection, but have not been able to find the right opportunity over the years. The last display of the photos was in 2004 and only featured a small sample of the collection’s entirety.

“In the past few years, there has

been a renewed interest and fascination with these photos,” Saarnio said. “The board had been mentioning that they’d like to see a display of the collection.

William Ferris has also recently made donations of his own photography to the museum. There were so many reasons and rationales that began coalescing. It all just added up for this to be the

right time for us to do this.”

Novelist Megan Abbott is the guest curator for the exhibit. She was the Grisham Writer in Residence at the university two years ago when the display was first formally decided upon. She is responsible for the selection and arrangement of the photos, as well as the way in which they are displayed. She is also currently working on a collection of essays on the photographer’s work to be released digitally early next year.

She has said that Eggleston’s work has been a significant influenced much of her writing.

One of the unique things about the exhibit is that it also features some of Eggleston’s black and white work, something that is not often included in exhibits featuring the work of the Father of Color Photography. The show also features booklets and special postcards that enrich the in-gallery experience of coming and physically viewing the collection.

Oxford Civic Chorus holding fall concert Dec. 6 The Oxford Civic Chorus presents its annual fall concert, Dan Forrest’s Requiem For The Living. Conducted

by Thomas Ardrey and accompanied by Steve Taranto, the chorus will be performing this lush fivemovement piece complete with orchestral accompaniment Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at Nutt Auditorium on the University of Mississippi campus.

Requiem for the Living (2013) offers a fresh and inspiring perspective on life, love, loss and renewal.

Using scriptural texts, each movement, traditionally, for the deceased, forms a narrative just as much for the living, and their own struggle with pain and sorrow. It is said that this musical experience will bring solace to those of us who struggle with loss as we move into the holiday season.

The composer states, “Overall, the work is a prayer for rest “Requiem” for the living, as much as for the deceased. It’s a “grant US rest,” even more than a

“grant THEM rest.”

“Requiem for the Living is a transformative work by one of the most prolific composers of our day,” said Ardrey. “Traditionally, a requiem mass is a funeral mass written to commemorate one’s death. However, this work is a requiem for those of us who are still in this world and strives to grant us strength and peace.

I wanted to perform a larger work this fall, but wanted to do something that would be new yet familiar. The requiem has always been a

popular setting for composers throughout history, and Dan Forrest’s surely is amazing.”

OCC Board member, Debra Anderson said, “This piece of music is truly stunning. I am moved each time we rehearse and for days after as well.”

“We invite you to come and support the Oxford Civic Chorus as we perform the Requiem For the Living,” said OCC board president Kristin Rogers. “This Requiem is absolutely beautiful as we join with a small

chamber orchestra. Requiem for the Living will bring emotion to the singers and audience as we are taken from a place of pleading for mercy to loss to mourning and finally to peace. You will surely be inspired and blessed by the experience.”

Tickets are $10 for adults and, $5 for students are available at the Ole Miss box office, at the door, or may be purchased from choir members.

The Oxford Civic Chorus is a nonprofit organization

that strives to provide quality artistic experiences to North Mississippi communities through choral music, offering two concerts a year.

Members donate their time and talent and are from every walk of life, ages 18 to 80. Open auditions for new singers occur at the beginning of each semester, in August and again in January.

Local scouts give back to residents of Southpointe

Visitors to Oxford’s Southpointe neighborhood may notice a new stand of maples and river birches in a previously vacant lot along Forest Glen Drive. The trees were all

planted recently by Jackson Reid and his Boy Scout friends as part of Reid’s Eagle service project.

The Scouts were helping restore an area of the development to its intended appearance. The lot was to be left wooded when the

neighborhood was built, but it was accidentally cleared. Now that the neighborhood is well-established, the Homeowners Association turned its attention to the lot, where erosion has been a concern.

Monica Hern talked with John Arrachea, a retired forester in the area, about ways to return the lot to its natural appearance. Arrachea contacted leaders of Boy Scout Troop 146 for assistance, and Reid, a Life Scout, volunteered to take on the effort for his Eagle

project.

“We were amazed at just how quickly it came together,” Hern said. “Now we have a beautiful palate of trees going up along the subdivision.”

Eagle is the highest rank in Boy Scouts, and one of the most intensive re-

The exhibit is being held in the library because it fits in with the theme of this year’s Common Read Experience.

The Common Read is a book that all incoming freshman at the university read. This year, the book was “Ten Little Indians” by Sherman Alexei, a collection of nine short stories focusing on the lives of Native Americans.

Head of the Department of Archives and Special Collections Jennifer Ford said that she particularly loves the installation because it gives students the opportunity to see physical evidence of cultures and histories. She thinks this particularly valuable to those incoming freshman currently reading about Native American culture.

“I think the exhibit gives all visitors to the library, especially students, a way to connect to a tangible past,” Ford said. “They can look at these artifacts and the documents related to Native Americans and get this sense of connection to everything, including

The hope is that by giving library visitors the chance to see physical artifacts from these diverse native cultures, that they will want to understand more about the peoples behind the artifacts. The display also ties into this year’s freshman Common Reading Experience. the book they’re reading.”

Meyers said that her department, as well as she personally, was more than delighted at the opportunity to share these artifacts with the university community.

“To me, this history is important because it is often forgotten or overlooked,” she said. “With no written language, archaeology and material objects are the only way we can learn about the cultures that lived here before Europeans came. As an archaeologist, I am still amazed by what you can

learn about past cultures from their material objects. I also just like learning about how people different from me and my time lived their lives. I think the diversity of humanity is something that unites us as humans because it is how we have adapted and survived for so long.”

The symposium consisted of a pair of two-hour panels, one in the morning and one in the afternoon with lunch provided in the Grove in between the two.

The first panel kicked off at 10 a.m. and featured curator Megan Abbot, Maude Schuyler Clay and Ferris.

This panel focused on Eggleston’s life, his family history and the arc of his career. The second panel began at 2 p.m. and was more so focused on Eggleston as a photographer, and how his work evolved, influenced and critical response over the years.

The University Lecture Fund paid for the symposium. Ferris, who now teaches at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, traveled all the way back to Oxford in order to

Saarnio said that he is thrilled to finally have the opportunity to show off the prints of Eggleston’s photography. Not only is he a fan of the work, but he also enjoyed watching the actual exhibit come together in the way it did.

“I love the alignment of it all, the coming together of so many great backstories that have coalesced in order to make this show possible,” the museum director said. “We have a fantastically generous donor,

an incredible guest curator, a strong museum team who installed the show beautifully and the enthusiastic support from the Friends of the Museum. Dr. William Ferris came all the way from Chapel Hill to moderate a panel and Lisa Howorth moderated a panel. We had six scholars speaking at the symposium. Taking the opportunity at hand, Reid recruited several friends from his troop and started to plan out his project.

“Planning this project took around a week-anda-half, and I had to learn how to properly plant a tree on different slopes” said Reid, a senior at Lafayette High School.

The city of Oxford provided several trees for the project, all between 4 and 6 feet tall. The Homeowners Association also acquired a few more, bringing the total to be planted to 11 trees.

Reid worked with Hern, Arrechea and nearby residents to plan where to plant the new trees. They also arranged to have the telephone, gas and other utilities marked so the Scouts could avoid disrupting any services with their digging.

Finally on the morning of Nov. 22, Reid gathered his recruits for the project and set out to plant the trees. For several hours, six Boy Scouts toiled under the sun.

The process to plant each tree was simple, but required some brute force.

First, the Scouts had to dig a hole deep enough for the

tree to fit in, breaking up any clay along the way.

Then they had to loosen and trim the roots, lower the tree into the hold, fill gaps back in with dirt and top the soil off with mulch.

Reid personally liked the physical labor of the project and between tedious sessions of transporting mulch found the digging part cathartic.

“I don’t know,” Reid said.

“Something about digging a hole is really stress-relieving somehow.”

The whole process went faster than expected, and the hard work of everyone involved resulted in a beautiful tree-lined area for the neighborhood.

“I thought it was a pretty good process,” Reid said.

“I’m just glad no one got hurt while doing it.”

Those who came and helped with the work enjoyed the process and were glad to help out a friend and fellow Scout.

Conley Wilkinson, an Eagle Scout who has been with Reid in Troop 146 for years, said that helping Reid complete the project was just all in a day’s work, noting that he got to see Jackson’s leadership skills stand out during the project.

“He can take charge and get something done,” Wilkinson said.

The Eagle project is intended to be the culmination of everything a Scout

has learned through his advancement, including all the personal and leadership development gained over the years.

According to Reid’s mother, Deidra Jackson, who has gotten to see him grow as a young man and mature into an Eagle Scout candidate, that statement is definitely true for him.

“For him, there’s an inquisitiveness, a willingness to learn new things,” Jackson said. “Leadership skills and being tough while maintaining a sense of brotherhood is what the Boy Scouts have.”

Jackson noted that her son had to learn to solve problems on his own and deal with a limited labor pool to complete the project, but he developed his leadership and planning skills by pushing though.

“He still just forged ahead with other Scouts,” she said.

Thanks to the hard work and preparation of Reid, Hern, Arrechea and all the Scouts who stood behind them, the subdivision is able to fight the erosion problem that had been developing and Reid stands at the apex of all his years of Scouting.

“Being a Scout is all about becoming a leader in today’s society,” Reid said. “Me, I’m going to be a leader one day, and Scouts is helping me get there.”

Duck hunters and enthusiasts of the outdoors will want to be at Tuesday's Sardis Lake Chapter Ducks Unlimited Fall Banquet.

Robby Swearingen is one of the members who helped organize the event that will be held at the University of Mississippi's Jackson Avenue Center, which is the old Wal-Mart in the mall.

The cost to enter is $50 or $80 for a couple. For Greenwing members the cost is $30. Catering for the banquet is being sponsored by Delta Steak Company. Oxford Printwear and Cypress Creek Construction are sponsors for the banquet.

There will be a silent auction, a raffle and other door prizes available. And for just $1 per chance, those in attendance can bid on a Henry Golden Boy Rifle, Ducks Unlimited edition which means only around

125 were made. A total of nine guns will be auctioned off.

The goal of the event is to raise funds but also fellowship. Swearingen, the president of the local chapter, said that committee meetings have been held over the past three months making sure the 2016 edition is the best it can be.

“We want to build our name back up and help the habitat for the ducks,” Swearingen said. “It used to be the guys only hunting camp but now we want your wives, your girlfriends, whoever, there will be there something for everybody.”

Swearingen, who has been hunting ducks since he was age 8, was hoping to have about 225 people attend. Last year there were right at 200 in attendance.

There are currently 175 members in the chapter, and 12 committee members.

The guns that will be in

the auction are a direct result of the chapter doing well the year before. Sardis Lake ranks third in the state in members, behind places like Madison and Olive Branch.

“We're doing pretty well and we've come a long way in the past couple to three years,” Swearingen said. “We have a lot of hand-made items that have been donated and we're steadily getting in more stuff. A person who buys a couple of tickets can go home with something.”

NWCC Rangers working towards bowl game

T

hanksgiving was about the only break Benjy Parker and the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers have gotten since August. When you play, and coach, football as well as the Rangers, work is important. Practice and film study is important. And wins lead to games after the regular season, like the MACJC playoffs and a bowl game.

The No. 5 Rangers are headed to take on Trinity Valley in the C.H.A.M.P.S Heart of Texas Bowl this coming Saturday. It's a reward for going 9-2 and being ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation. It's extra work for the upcoming season as well. Even though junior college coaches only have players for two seasons, there is something to be said about having extra reps for returning freshmen ahead of the spring.

Northwest came up just a little short in the MACJC state championship game. Parker felt like his team had their chances to knock off East Mississippi, which is also headed to a bowl game, and Parker was pleased with the overall effort in that 38-30 loss a few weeks back.

“We have the opportunity to play the No. 4 team in the country in Trinity Valley. They won the Texas league and they will be one heck of a team and we will have to pack a lunch. I can tell you that,” Parker said.

This was Parker's first season as the head coach. He was the defensive coordinator in 2015 when the Rangers went on to win their third NJCAA national championship. In between the practices leading up to the bowl game, Parker, and the staff as a whole, was looking at the future. That meant recruiting and then figuring out which players were going to be getting a scholarship and graduating in order to matriculate to another program.

The plan prior to Thanksgiving was to lift weights, and do some conditioning. The Rangers were off for Thanksgiving before returning practicing.

Champion Commodores Lafayette holds off Pontotoc to win 4A north title

A sea of fans flooded the field at Lafayette's William L. Buford Stadium Friday night. Hugs and smiles of those wearing red and gold lasted a long, long time. There was a lot to celebrate following the Commodores' 21-14 win over Pontotoc in the MHSAA Class 4A north state championship.

For the fifth time since 2009, the Commodores are playing for the overall football title in 4A. There were many who didn't think Lafayette would be in this position following a 0-2 start to the 2016 season. Now, after 12 straight wins, any remaining doubters would be smart to stay quiet.

Lafayette (12-2 overall) is a win away from capturing its third state title in school history. Poplarville will be the opponent this coming week at Mississippi State. The matchup was made possible thanks to great plays turned in on both sides of the ball for Lafayette.

Linebacker Dillon Woods had the biggest one for the Commodores, intercepting Pontotoc Jacob Carter with just over six minutes left in the contest with the game tied at 14. While Woods was unable to score, his return to the Warrior 2-yard line set up a second touchdown from Jamie Shaw that put the Commodores ahead for good.

Friday's win was hard fought but it was classic Lafayette. Even though the

Warriors (13-2) did a great job of slowing the likes of Jamarcus Quarles on the ground, the Commodores were able to get yards when they had to, and the hard way. Lafayette quarterback Will Ard completed 12 of his 20 passes. He shook off his lone interception that was returned for one of the two Pontotoc scores to lead the Commodores to the spot they have talked about for months.

Three years ago, Ard was quarterbacking the Warriors. Following the win, many of the Pontotoc fans hugged him and wished him well against Poplarville.

“Pontotoc was a great team. They play with class and they played hard. I know every single one of them, they're the boys I grew up with,” Ard said. “I love every single one of them. They stuck with it all the way to the end. It was a hard battle and I'm just glad to get out of it.”

Ard said he was praying the entire last drive that his Commodores would find a way to win the contest. The defense came through, just like it has all season long.

“I knew it was going to be a close game coming in just because they're a great football team. They were going to give us a hard time and they hit us a couple of times and we hit them a couple of times,” Ard said. “I figured it would be the last drive or the fourth quarter that would decide the football game.”

While many wrote the Commodores off following the loss at Grenada, Ard said the team didn't waver.

“We had a brand new coaching staff and we knew it was going to take a few games to figure out who we are and we figured it out pretty quick,” Ard said. “It took two games and then bam, we were playing ball. I knew we were going to make a run to this state championship.

I started off a little shaky tonight with the pick six. I just had to calm down and keep playing ball and just do what we do. They picked up momentum in parts of the game, but we had it most of the game in my opinion. We got there and that was our ultimate goal. Now it's time to go win it.”

Defensive end Amani Johnson said that the Commodores aren't a big vocal team, but the biggest voice of everyone is Woods.

“He is the one who is going to pump us up. He's always going to give his best, too,” Johnson said. “We don't run without him. He is the heart and soul of our team. It's not shocking at all that he made that play. It's meant for him. I don't even know if I can explain it, it's unbelievable, the feeling. We were 0-2 and people were wondering if we were ever going to make the playoffs and here we are, about to go to state. It's one of the best feelings in the world.”

The Hitting Specialty Camp is set for the first weekend of the month, while the Pitching/Catching Specialty Camp will take place Dec. 11-12. practices and you get certain practices to look at all your young guys,” Parker said. “We want to reward our players and also build depth with the young guys but it's not like it is at the four-year schools. We have had a couple more weeks of practice that some other teams that didn't go into the playoffs didn't have. Any time you can have extra time, it's huge for your program.”

NWCC had 13 players named to the MACJC AllMACJC team. Two of them, linebacker Adonis Thomas and cornerback Kaleb Chalmers, are both being re-

cruited by the Ole Miss Rebels. Thomas, a native of Georgia, started his career at Alabama, while Chalmers, who is from South Carolina, is a former Clemson Tiger.

Both have been key to the success of the Rangers, who were right at the top in defense in the state this past fall.

“He's a good teammate who is coachable and he's done what we've asked him to do,” Parker said of Thomas, who was second on the team with 64 tackles and had six sacks. “He was a good player, both on and off the field for us. He's a good person and he played hard every week. He got a lot of tackles every week. He did real good for us and he will have three years left to play

tackles in the run game.

Parker wasn't sure what Thomas was better at, stopping the run or covering receivers, but Thomas does run better than a lot of other linebackers.

Chalmers was a leader for

the Rangers on defense.

Parker said he always did things the right way.

“If he makes a mistake, he doesn't point figures. He says it's his bad, let's go. He's just a really good teammate,” Parker said. “He is a really great player and a really great family. His mom and dad make a lot of our games all the way from South Carolina.”

Like Thomas, Chalmers will graduate in December, which allows him to go through spring drills.

Chalmers had 25 passes defended or broken up this fall, and he finished with 26 tackles, a sack and an interception. Chalmers has good size at 6 foot. He ended up in Senatobia because of Parker, who started recruiting him

when he was at Butler Community College in Kansas.

“They have really good football in the state of South Carolina and it's state we can get to pretty easy,” Parker said. “We do get kids out of Alabama and Georgia and obviously Mississippi and South Carolina is a place we need to look more into because they do have good players and good high school football there. Kaleb was at Clemson and he redshirted and he had to go to a JC and we were fortunate enough to get him and he has been unbelievable.

team jump out to a 7-0 lead on the strength of a 15-yard run by Jamie Shaw at the start of the second quarter. Pontotoc led 14-7 in the third quarter but none of that ruffled the feathers of Fair, who continued to make calls just as he has all season long.

Even when the Com-

modores didn't punch it into the end zone on a 4th and goal at the Pontotoc 1, early in the fourth, Fair felt someone would make a play, just like they have all year. Woods came up with the play, and the rest is history.

“I'm not surprised. We had a goal from day one and a plan from day one and our goal is to not to get to Starkville, but to win the state championship,” Fair

said. “They're each special, each game, all the way down is special. These guys mean so much to me and they have put so much into it. It's fun to watch them celebrate tonight. We started out 0-2 and nobody gave us a lot of credit for a whole lot. These guys didn't listen to the negativity out there and they stayed together as a family and they just play so well together and for each other.

I'm not surprised when we win these close ones, but those are the teams that usually do, the ones that play really well together.”

Ard finished with 134 yards through the air, while Lafayette totaled 250 yards.

Pontotoc was limited to just 167 total yards after averaging 421 yards coming in per game. The Warriors had negative 3 yards in the first half and only scored one offensive

touchdown.

Pontotoc drove the ball to the Lafayette 5 with under a minute left in the game.

On fourth-and-goal, Carter dropped back to pass but he was pressured and ended up being sacked by BJ Curry. Evan though the Warriors gained almost 100 yards on the ground in the second half, Fair said he expected the throw from Carter at the end.

“We thought they would

throw it at the 5-yard line.

With the game on the line, I love having our defense out there,” Fair said. “They are flying around. Coach (Ben) Ashley does a great job. He had a great call for it. We don't have many defensive linemen, we just play with a bunch of linebackers out there and BJ got to him.”

Woods made a play when Lafayette needed one

When the Lafayette Commodores needed a play, Dillon Woods was there to deliver. The senior did a little bit of everything Friday night in the 21-14 win over Pontotoc at William L. Buford Stadium. Woods caught passes and rushed the ball on offense. He pulled down ball carriers on defense and he pressured Pontotoc quarterback Jacob Carter.

Woods' biggest play was the interception he had of Carter in the fourth quarter. With just over six minutes left, and the game tied at 14, Woods snagged an errant pass in the air and returned it to the Pontotoc 2-yard line. A play later, Jamie Shaw was in the end zone for the game-winning score. The victory propelled the Commodores to the MHSAA Class 4A north state title and a date with Poplarville in the 4A championship this coming Saturday at Mississippi State.

Not long after the interception, Woods made a big tackle with Pontotoc driving for a score. He suffered what appeared to be a concussion and was unable to be on the field the final play on defense. His overall effort inspired the Commodores to record one more critical stop, and secure their fifth north title since 2009.

“It was the play of the game,” Lafayette coach Michael Fair said about Woods' interception. “We were playing well and Pontotoc is a great team. They're so sound defensively.

There wasn't a gap in there and they had a great game plan for us. We kind of hung in there and hung in there and scratched out a couple of touchdowns and Dillon's play really just opened things up for us.”

Lafayette cornerback Tyler Williams gave Woods a lot of credit for the performance. Williams thought Woods was going to score on the play, but he was tackled by Carter.

“I have to give him a hard time on that,” Williams said with a smile. “He made a great play. I'm proud of him, he played a heck of a game.”

Will Ard, who made several big throws on offense for Lafayette, said the Woods pick was the “biggest play of the game by far.”

“Dillon has stepped up all year long and he definitely did then,” Ard said. “I'm not sure what happened to him, but he played his guts out. He left it on the field. He does every week.”

Woods was able to join in the celebration following the game but it was clear the helmet-to-helmet collision he had with a Pontotoc player shook him up. His status for the championship game with Poplarville has not been finalized but it's hard to imagine that he will not be on the field at Mississippi State this coming week.

Rebels hold off Montana on Thanksgiving FROM OXFORD CITIZEN REPORTS

There was no Thanksgiving hangover for the Ole Miss men's basketball team Thursday night. Deandre Burnett hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final two minutes and finished with 21 points, and Ole Miss held off Montana for an 86-81 win at The Pavilion.

Cullen Neal added 19 points, including five 3-pointers, Terence Davis scored 18 points, and Sebastian Saiz, the reigning SEC Player of the Week, had 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Sayeed Pridgett led Montana (1-5) with 19 points. Ahmaad Rorie added 18 points and Jack Lopez scored 17.

Ole Miss led by as many as 18 points midway through the second half, taking a 62-44 lead on Saiz's traditional 3-point play. Montana got as close as 81-76 in the final minute. However, Lopez missed a 3pointer that would have pulled the Grizzlies within one possession, and the Rebels converted at the free throw line over the final 30 seconds to seal it.

Ole Miss led by 12 at halftime after building a 14-point lead in the first half, thanks primarily to the 3-point shooting of Neal and Davis, each of whom hit three treys in the opening 20 minutes.

Ole Miss will return to action Wednesday at home against Middle Tennessee State. Tipoff for that contest is set for 7 p.m.
