Friends, community praise the lives of those lost in plane crash

Friends and members of the community spent the first part of the week searching for answers and reasons why they will no longer see Dr. Jason and Dr. Lea Farese, Dr. Michael Perry and his wife Kim or Dr. Austin Poole and his wife Angie. The six died in the tragic plane crash in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama Sunday morning.

Four of the six were dentists, while the other two wives helped their husbands in the practice. All six were some of the most active members of the local community. Dr. Perry was one of the biggest supporters of youth athletics in Oxford and Lafayette County as he created the Oxford-Lafayette Sportsplex. Dr. Jason Farese helped coach his son and almost a dozen other children to a recent World Series title.

Prayers for the children and the families of the six men and women who were killed in a tragic plane crash started the Lafayette County Supervisors meeting Monday morning. The loss of friends and loved ones continued

Monday night as up to 1,000 people took part in a prayer vigil at The Grove. On Saturday, there is another public event being held to honor the memory and cotributions of the couples.

At the heart of the loss are the children. A total of 11 children the three couples are now without parents, and many in the community have put their arms around them during this unfortuante time.

Will Hopkins called Dr. Jason Farese his best friend.

Hopkins credited him with getting him into coaching, and the two were the ones that started the team that captured the U-10 World Series title. Hopkins also credited Dr. Jason Farese with inspiring him to start his own business — The Green Door — in town. Coaching little league together also made a tremendous impact on Hopkins.

“I had my own issues in life and I was very unconfident in starting my own business here. He was the friend that told me to do. He truly changed my life,” said Hopkins, who texted with Farese on Saturday night while the

“Even before I started coaching, I was at his house all the time. I'm Uncle Will to his kids. He was just a great father and coach and his core values showed up in that team with them winning the World Series two weeks ago.

He was taken too young. He is the toughest guy I know. I still don't believe that he is gone. It's just not real yet. And Lea was an amazing woman.

Jason was intense, meaning he had to do things his way.

And Lea was that wife that let him do his thing, but she spoke up when she felt he wasn't doing it the right way.

She absolutely loved her children. She put her kids before anything else. Jason was the stern father, got them discipline and Lea was the one behind the scenes. She didn't want to be out front and be about her. It always about her kids and she love them and Jason.”

Lafayette High boy's basketball coach John Sherman was close with Dr. Perry. The two served as ushers at St. John Catholic Church.

“He was innovative and he had some vision for things that he wanted done around here as far as youth sports,” said Sherman, who felt so bad for the children who had to lose their parents. “He was a friend. I've known him a long time. He was in my niece's wedding. He was always willing to serve and he had a helpful spirit. And (Kim) was just as sweet and pleasant as she could be, just a joy to be around. I've watched those three children grow up in the church. They attended mass every Sunday.

I've had a heavy heart ever since I heard the news.”

Greg Lewis, the head coach of the Lafayette High baseball team, said his heart broke for the children involved. Lewis' daughter Avery played on the

7-8 year-old Flood soccer team with one of the Farese's two daughters. Every time that Lewis was at the complex, he remembers seeing Dr. Perry cutting the fields. He remembers discussions on the upcoming football season.

“We were just out there enjoying the day, enjoying watching your girls play out there. It's a sad thing,” Lewis said. “You look at all the things that Dr. Perry has done out there with the Flood and the baseball, too. It was a work in progress, but it was always him out there mowing all the grass. Other people were helping, but for somebody to have that many businesses and that much money to pour into something you would figure that he wouldn't be doing it, but there he was at 8, 10 o'clock in the morning going out there and getting the fields ready. I always thought it was a neat thing for him to put that much effort in the things he had.”

Jason Kent gave a lot of credit to Dr. Perry for allowing the Lafayette Dolphins, a youth football team, to find sanctuary at the Sportsplex.

Both he and Dr. Perry helped work with the local Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter at Ole Miss.

“I hate it for somebody that donated so much to the community and for somebody with young kids. He gave us a place to practice and play for over a year when other people wouldn't or didn't have the opportunity to go somewhere else,” Kent said. “He let us take that field down there at nearly no cost.

We have been able to move back to Lafayette, but he came through at a very critical point in our program. He gave us that opportunity.

Fish Robinson, the pastor at Community Church, was a fraternity brother to Dr. Poole at Delta State. Robinson said that Dr. Poole, who practiced in Clarksdale and grew up in the Delta, loved Ole Miss sports and that he was a bigtime hunter who loved being outdoors in general. Robinson's mother also worked for the parents of Angie Poole, and he thought the world of both of his friends.

“The best way I can describe Angie is beautiful, not just on the outside, but also on the inside and her smile was contagious,” Robinson said. “Any picture that you see of her is her smile. And when I think about them together, that's what they were. They were smiles to everybody.

When Austin walked into the room at college, he was always smiling. He was great to be around, a funny guy. He was a joy to be around and then God gave Austin the opportunity to go into dentistry, and what was he doing? Taking care of people's smiles.

“That's what hurts the most in all of this and not just with Angie and Austin but with the Perrys and the Fareses. These are families that brought smiles to people's faces as a profession,” Robinson said. “We are hurting as a community and as a body of believers. We are hurting as fathers and mothers. I couldn't let go of my kid the other night as I put them to sleep.

Each one of my boys prayed for the Pooles and the Perrys and the Fareses. There are moms and dads that lost children. For joy, ‘Take Me to the River’

his week produced a combination of heartache and joy in Oxford on a scale unlike any week, perhaps ever. On Sunday, our community was rocked with unspeakable horror when six of our citizens perished in a plane crash leaving behind 11 children. On Monday, Oxonian Sam Kendricks brought home an Olympic bronze medal, the first Oxford resident to ever participate in an Olympics, let alone earn a medal.

It seemed the whole town watched Sam Monday night and cheered even while nursing heavy hearts.

A prayer vigil was held earlier in the evening at the Grove on Monday which featured the unsettling sight of small children crying while their parents clutched them tightly. The U.S. flag at Oxford’s City Hall was lowered to halfmast.

While candles and prayers were undoubtedly appreciated by the families, a meal-a-day chart was set up online and quickly filled up. As one social media poster put it, “This isn’t Rebel Nation, an out-oftowner’s playground. We are a community.”

The three couples collectively leave behind 11 children, the youngest of whom just began kindergarten and the oldest an Ole Miss freshman.

Representatives of the three churches the couples attended led the prayer vigil.

Father Joe Tonos of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Eddie

Lester of Oxford-University United Methodist Church and J.D. Shaw of Grace Bible Church all spoke and offered words of comfort and consolation to the mourners gathered in the Grove that evening. After the pastor, reverend and priest addressed the crowd, the three invited those gathered to join in small group prayer.

Mourners made little effort to hold back tears during the vigil and openly wept in the arms of loved ones. Many of the mourners gathered were children who grew up in the dentist chairs of those lost in the crash.

The vigil was brought to an end when the crowd was led in a rendition of “Amazing Grace,” the old hymn dispersing through the oaks that surround the Grove stage.

A joint memorial service for the couples will be held at the Tad Smith Coliseum Saturday morning at 10.

Food Truck Fight fundraiser coming to Oxford

A team at Leadership Lafayette has been working with the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and several local nonprofits to create the first ever Food Truck Fight.

YAC Director Wayne Andrews is the architect behind the Food Truck Fight, which is being held Aug. 28 at the Armory Pavilion.

Through the arts council, Andrews has dealt with local food trucks on several occasions and has seen the crowds they draw. The creation of a full event that would benefit multiple nonprofits seemed like the next logical step.

Allison Garner is an accountant with FNC and her Leadership Lafayette group is in charge of setting up the event and getting the word out. As project manager, she has been working closely with Andrews to organize the event. Garner said that having one large

event featuring as many of food trucks as possible would be the best possible way to raise the most amount of money in a short time. The variety of food that will be available at the event will ensure that there is something there that almost everyone can enjoy.

Organizing a charity event is a change of pace from Garner is accustomed to. She said that without Andrews’ guidance and all of his connections through the arts council, none of the planning would have been possible. Spending over half a year getting an event together was something new for her.

“It’s definitely been quite an experience for me,” Garner said. “With my job, I’m very used to working on something and getting it done right then. While working on this, I’ve had to leave things open for while and rely on other people a lot more. I like to get in and nail things down and be done with it, but organizing

an event like this takes time.

It’s very different from what I used to. I’ve really enjoyed it, and I think it’s gonna be a hit. Everybody loves food.”

Garner said that everyone intends for this event to become an annual thing. In the coming years, Horizons, YAC and Lafayette Oxford Foundation for Tomorrow (LOFT) will be in charge of organizing and operating the event. The way the event works is that each vendor will be representing a charity. LOFT is being paired with Small Time Hot Dogs, the arts council is being paired with Sweetwater Bleu’z Creole & Cajun Cooking, Horizons has Breakfast 2 Lunch, Crime Stoppers is with Smoke Shop Oxford and the Rotary Club is with YoknapaTaco.

In order to donate money to one’s preferred nonprofit, they have to buy food from that particular vendor. Each food vendor will be donating a portion of their proceeds to the different

nonprofits.

Those attending the event will pay a $10 entry fee that can be either preordered online, or purchased at the actual event.

When buying their ticket, people can designate which participating nonprofit they would like their money to go toward. At the end of the event, the money will be collected and collected and a winner will be announced.

Andrews said that he loved working on the project and that it was really nice to try something new by doing a fundraiser that will also serve as a regular event for years to come.

“This is a unique idea as it creates a community event and fundraiser,” Andrews said in an email to the Citizen. “The event introduces the broader community to different service organizations while providing fundraiser that allows the groups to share the burden of organizing.”

I think this is an awesome way to include so many different nonprofits in the community. I think it’s an awesome idea that Wayne had and I can only see it getting bigger over the years as the popularity of food trucks continues to grow.”

Board, mayor remember victims of plane crash

The Oxford city board meeting that took place Tuesday had a somber tone as the mayor and board recognized the lives of the six Oxford citizens lost in Sunday’s plane crash.

The meeting began with Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson noting how difficult the past few days have been for the entire community. After

adopting and approving the budget for the meeting, the mayor acknowledged the Zika case that was reported in Lafayette county by a citizen who had recently traveled outside of the country.

Though the disease was not contracted here in the county, the mayor assured everyone that the city is spraying heavily for mosquitos, especially in high-traffic areas with children such as parks and near schools. He

then reiterated the need for everyone to make sure they continue to treat their pool and hot tubs and dump out any unnecessary standing water.

The mayor also mentioned the importance of making sure that dogs stay on leashes when out in any other city park but the dog park. Before getting to the budget items, the meeting broke away from the usual routine of things.

“I’m Presbyterian and I’m

not ashamed of that,” Patterson said. “It’s been a tough few days for the whole community, a really hard few days. I’m going to read a prayer and step outside of what we usually do here. This is something we generally don’t do, but this is from the board and myself and is directed toward the Farese, Poole and Perry families.”

After the prayer, the board approved the appointment of Judy Riddell to the Plan-

ning Commission and Eunice Carter to the Historic Preservation Committee.

Lewis Black to perform at Ford Center

Comedian Lewis Black will be performing at the Getrtude C. Ford Center next weekend as a part of his The Emperor’s New Clothes: The Naked Truth Tour.

Black is an outspoken comedian known the world over for his rants and political and social satire. The performer has been a longtime correspondent on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” His television show, syndicated stand up specials and recent role as the character Anger in Pixar’s “Inside Out” have risen Black’s level of fame over the past few years. From his home in New York, Black spoke on the phone with Oxford Citizen reporter Chaning Green Tuesday afternoon to discuss his upcoming August 26 performance at the Ford Center.

Green: So this is your first time in Oxford?

Black: From what I understand, I’m the first comedian to be preforming on this particular stage in Oxford. To be honest, from the time I began touring 12 or 13 or 14 years ago, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to get on that stage. I’ve been trying to get to Oxford, and it never worked. I’ve been wanting to see the University of Mississippi and the history there, literary-wise, is just extraordinary.

It’s extraordinary for a lot of other reasons too. I’ve always wanted to go there.

I’ve never been to Oxford before, and I only wanted to go if I was performing there, but it wasn’t like I wasn’t asking. In past years, the stage did not allow profanity, is what we were told. I thought, ‘Wow, on a college campus? That’s really hardcore.’ I’ve performed all over the South. I’ve been all over Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Georgia — no one’s ever said I can’t swear. You know, in Mississippi, profanity’s the least of the problems.

Green: Do you like touring the South?

Black: Oh, yes. The audiences there that show up to see me are always great.

Chaning G reen: Have you ever per- It’s a different base. I went to school at Chapel Hill in North Carolina, so I’ve alformed in Mississippi before?

Black : I get to say whatever I want. I mean, really. I can say whatever I want.

It’s unbelievable. People all the time come up and tell me, ‘You get to say things that I couldn’t say.’ That’s what’s fun. I get to vent a lot of anger and point out what I think is stupid. What always amazes me is that every so often, there’s always someone who takes it a little too seriously. Like, really? I’m wandering around the country, to speak to rooms of about 1,200 to 2,000 people. I’m not having any major effect on anything.

Theatre Oxford to put on 'Crimes of the Heart'

Next weekend Theatre Oxford will be debuting “Crimes of the Heart,” their first show of the season at the Powerhouse.

“Crimes of the Heart” was written by Jackson playwright Beth Henley and is set in Hazlehurst. The play debuted in December of 1980 and won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1981. Described as a combination of tragedy and comedy, the play tells the story of the three Magrath sisters, one of whom has just non-fatally shot her abusive husband. The sisters come from a dysfunctional family and lost their mother to suicide. Though one has shot her husband, the other two sisters are not so innocent themselves and are all eventually forced to deal with their own crimes of the heart.

Oxford Middle School drama teacher Debra Anderson is directing the production. This is the second time Anderson has worked with Theatre Oxford in a professional capacity. Anderson said that she loves this play. She said that when they gave her the script to read, she instantly knew she wanted to do the play. She loves that it is dark, funny and explorative of more adult themes than she

works with at her day job. Working on this play during the summer and wrapping up in late August allows Anderson to explore a different style of theatre without interfering with her job in district.

“It's the 70’s,” Anderson said, describing the play as she worked to prepare a box of chocolates as a prop. “It’s about women in the deep, dark South that didn’t get to be raised by their Mama. It’s just quintessentially Southern. I love being able to work with adults on more mature material and explore that character on a deeper level by building it with a bit more sophistication. It’s a good play, too. I’m very lucky in that I get to choose whether or not I want to work with them depending on the play. I read it and if I feel like I can lend something to it, if I can bring it to a finished product that I can be proud of and that the community can be proud of, then I’ll go for it. And here I am.”

Josh Moore is working with as a producer on the play. He said that he has high hopes for this play and the rest of the season. Moore said that he thinks people are going to be really impressed with what Theatre Oxford has managed to put together for “Crimes of the Heart.”

It’s a very good Southern comedy-drama. It’s probably going to be our biggest show of the year and we’re just looking for some community support.”

Anderson agreed with Moore, saying that this play has not been done in the area in quite some time. There is an audience of people out there who are not familiar with the play and will love to discover something new, as well as a group an audience who loves the

play and want to see it again.

Theatre Oxford, being a community theatre program, is funded by community support. They offer memberships for those who want to come to every show and have recently started doing playbills that feature advertisements from local businesses. The money from ticket sales from one show goes toward putting on the next production and renting the Powerhouse stage from the city.

“Something that I think is important about this production is that we have people form all different

areas of the community participating,” said Abby Wilson who is working as the stage manager for the production. “We have a lawyer in the show, a teacher, a college student and were really getting different sides of the community here that are support and being a part of this community theatre.”

Oxford's Yoste excited for this year's 'Dance Like the Stars' event

Julie Yoste has been practicing to dance for months all in the effort to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of North Mississippi. On Saturday night, when Yoste takes part in Dance Like the Stars at the BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo, she will also be dancing in the memory of her best friend Angie Poole, who was killed in the tragic plane crash this past Sunday.

This is the 11th year of the Dance Like the Stars event, and all the money raised by Yoste, and the others who compete, will go towards helping the club, including the branch located in Oxford.

Late last week, Yoste, and those that have supported in this event, had

raised approximately $15,000. Anyone who wishes to donate money can still do so leading up to the event.

Ever since February, when Dr. Stephen Monroe, the president of the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club in Oxford, called Yoste to participate, she has been working towards raising money, and to perfect a two and a half minute dance routine. Monroe convinced Yoste to represent Oxford, one of six clubhouses in the North Mississippi chain, in the annual Dance Like the Stars event. Yoste was familiar with the event as she watched friend Katie Narron take part in 2015.

“I had never been to the event and I was shocked how big of a deal this was. There were so many people there. It was

an amazing production,” Yoste said. “(Naron) placed third and just an incredible experience.

Last year they raised over $200,000. It's a huge fundraiser.”

Each of the contestants had a certain goal for funds to raise. Yoste wanted to garner right at $20,000.

“We all know how generous the people are here in Oxford and they have been incredible,” said Yoste, who credited her husband Geoffrey's ability to raise money as a huge key to her success.

“When (Geoffrey) really believes in something, he really gets behind it. He's so passionate. I always tease him and tell him he should be a professional fundraiser. He said that would take away the fun TURN TO DANCE PAGE 10

of it. He has really been helpful to me, especially these last few weeks.”

Advertising has helped Yoste raise funds. She has also sent out letters and sold items like cookies and lemonade through the summer. The toughest part of it all for Yoste was putting herself out there.

“I can promote my friends and my family and my church and my school and it has been difficult for me to put yourself out there,” Yoste said. “I realized one day that it's about the Boys and Girls Club. I had been involved in a lot of different things in town, but I had not been involved in the Boys and Girls Club. I studied up on it and I went to board meetings and that board is amazing. They are just fantastic. They have asked what they can do and helped me raise money. They bought tables at the event.”

The more time Yoste spent with the children that attend the club, the more motivated she be-

came to raise funds.

“It's such a reputable program and so good. I live right around the corner and I walk on the track by the tennis courts all the time and you see the kids outside and you just know these are good kids that need help,” Yoste said. “I feel like anything you can do to help somebody else is great. This has been the most amazing thing. Truly outside of having my kids, it has been the most rewarding thing I've done.”

Yoste said she was “terrified and nervous” about the routine but she has pushed herself to new places in learning the dance routine. She has traveled to Tupelo twice a week, and totaled 25 practices overall. Yoste wanted the name of the song to be a surprise, but it's from the musical Hairspray.

“It is a happy, feel good, get-out-of-your chair song. That's the thing that is interesting. They asked what song I wanted to dance to and I had no idea because there are so many songs that I like,” Yoste said. “My daughter and I went to see that

movie when she was yonger and we have always loved it. We were coming back from Tupelo, and nothing related to the dance, but that song came on and she looked at me, and I looked at her, and said 'That's the song.'

When I met my dancer, he said he really liked that and he said it was going to be hard dance because it's so fast. And it is hard. It's not an easy dance. There are a lot of moves and you move from one thing to the next thing but if we can nail it, I think it's going be really good.”

There are awards given for the top finishers involved, and Yoste said it would be an honor to win.

There is also a silent auction that will be held just before all the dancing Nicole Lamar donated an “incredible” painting according to Yoste. Robin Melton from Luxe Salon also donated several hundred dollars of products for the auction. And all of the money raised there will go towards Yoste's goal.

Family Business: Johnny Hill back with his son Jake at New Albany

F

eet proppped up on a chair, watching beach volleyball in the Olympics, is what you would expect Johnny Hill to be doing currently. The former head football coach of the Oxford High Chargers wasn't watching the Olympics as part of his recreation time in retirement, he was killing time waiting for his defensive players to get done with school in order to watch film.

Three years after leading the Chargers to three straight MHSAA Class 5A title games, Johnny Hill is back coaching again, serving as the defensive coordinator for the New Albany Bulldogs under his son, Jake. The duo coached the Chargers together, with the difference being that Johnny Hill made the top decisions. The season opener for the Bulldogs is Friday against Bruce. Johnny Hill, who won over 200 games at both Oxford and Tupelo combined, smiled when asked if it felt any different getting ready for an opponent in his new role compared to this time last season.

“It is different but of course I looked at the offense and the defense when I was the head coach. And the special teams,” he said. “Now, I concentrate more on the defensive side and game plan on how you stop a team. I've enjoyed it. I'm getting to coach again. A lot more than as a head coach because you hire coaches to do that when you're a head coach.”

Getting players to improve is something Johnny Hill thrives on. Being on a football field has been with him forever. As soon as the jamboree with Kossuth was over last week, Johnny Hill was ready to get on to the next order of business, which was improving the effort and skill of his defensive players.

“We have a really good coaching staff over here. I really have enjoyed them and we have some good kids over here,” said Johnny Hill, who also coaches the linebackers. “Jake, he's so much fun to coach with.

He's really good at what he does. I get tickled when they say Coach Hill. They're talking to him now, not me. I let him have to deal with all that other stuff.”

When the end came at Oxford last December, Johnny Hill didn't plan on being on the sidelines. He thought that watching from the stands sounded better, whether that was at college games, watching his sons officiate in the SEC, or stopping by a game on a Friday night.

“Jake called me and said he needed some help. It was probably at the beginning of the summer when they got out and I hope to be able to help in some shape, form or fashTURN TO FAMILY PAGE 17

Bronze feels just as good as gold to the people of Oxford. Sam Kendricks was able to give a town filled with a lot of heavy hearts what it needed Monday night, a great performance in pole vault in the 2016 Olympics.

The former Oxford High and Ole Miss standout, competing in his first Olympics at age 23, jumped in the memory of the Farese, Poole and Perry families who lost their mothers and fathers in Sunday's tragic plane crash. also Kendricks Sam jumped for his friends, and his family, who filled the first row of spectators packed into Rafters on the Square to watch the historic night. His twin brother, Tom Kendricks, wore a blue shirt and a USA hat on his head.

His aunt Angel walked through the crowd wearing a shirt that said “Going for the Gold.” It was a festive night, an evening much more like Oxford is used to, and one that saw focus firmly on America's greatest pole vaulter. The #JumpSamJump

posts even made the competition trend across Twitter.

“I'm very nervous for my brother but also nothing but excited and ecstatic for him because he has worked so hard for this,” Tom Kendricks said as the competition started. “He has worked so hard for so long for this. To see him set the Olympic trial record on the 4th of July as second lieutenant in the Army, he looks like Captain America. In talking with him (Monday), he just didn't seem nervous about it. He was just ready to do his thing.”

When Marni Kendricks told Tom Kendricks about the “small” watch party at Rafters, he knew that the turnout would be well in the hundreds.

“I knew if they advertised it that it was going to be too many people to comprehend. She said no there won't. I said yes, there will.

After a fantastic showing in the preliminary round this past Saturday, the Oxford native continued to clear the bar until it reached 5.93 meters, or 19 feet, 5.5 inches for us Americans.

Each vaulter has three chances to clear the height, and each time Sam Kendricks hit the bar just

enough for it to fall down into the pit.

“I did not set a personal best but I attempted it. I missed it very close three times, so I cannot be ashamed of my effort. I'm very proud of my bronze medal, what me and my coach (father and Ole Miss alum Scott Kendricks) and my family have achieved,” Sam Kendricks said. “This particular competition was a lot of fun for me. OHS track needs to have Sam, Scott Kendricks on it

Monday night, Oxford's own Sam Kendricks won the Bronze medal at the Rio Olympics in the pole vault. I am fortunate enough to have personally seen his career from the start and to have followed him for the past decade and hope to see him jump for another decade. Next to Sports Editor John Davis, I've seen his road to the Olympics from the very beginning.

I first met Sam at Bobby Holcomb Field while I was a senior at Oxford High and while he was an eighth grader at the middle school. Like many know me to do today, I was at the track helping out and in large part because my dad is the head coach with Lafayette's track team. I was also on the Yearbook staff to help take pictures for the annual book. Social media back in 2007 was in its infant stage. Facebook was raging onto the Internet scene and Twitter wasn't born yet, so I wasn't exactly there to update on Oxford's track meets.

He was 14 years old and was a stick-figure, not like his twin brother Tom who was “supposed� to be the athlete in the family. Sam was just trying to find an event so he can be on the track team in high school and cement some kind of social status many teenagers that age try to find.

His goals since then have really evolved from his eighth grade year of just making the team and finding an event he can do. His freshmen year, he wanted to make it to the state meet in Pearl and score points for Oxford. Sam ended up posting a then personal best of 12 feet, 6 inches which was good for third place and a spot on the podium in Pearl. You couldn't find a happier kid after he cleared that height that day.

His next goal was to be a state champion and eventually he accomplished that. Ole Miss eventually turned their heads and recruited Sam over. Finally he wanted to beat the state record during his senior year and he accomplished

Then at Ole Miss, he seemed to improve his personal best by a foot every time I checked Twitter when Ole Miss had a meet.

The meet that got Sam to see a lot more national and perhaps international attention was at the Texas Relays his sophomore year in 2013. Sam smashed his personal best by more than a foot and cleared 19 feet for the first time. That was the meet that I truly started to believe he had a shot to compete at the Olympic Games in Rio. That result got pole vaulting magazines to turn heads and it got me to nominate Sam to be in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd page of their magazine. I didn't really expect them to take it and post his most recent accomplishment, but even I was shocked when I picked

up the magazine two weeks later and saw his face in there.

Sam since then won two NCAA Championships and has done well in the pro circuit after foregoing his final year of eligibility at Ole Miss.

Sam should be commended for all of his accomplishments he's done as an athlete, but he wouldn't have this opportunity to have any kind of pole vaulting career at all if his professional coach, former OHS track and cross country coach, and his dad, Scott Kendricks. He was the one who pushed the MHSAA back in 20032004 to put pole vaulting as an official event in track and field.

Scott was one of the main coaches, if not the top coach, that helped put pole vaulting on the map in Mississippi. Prior to 2003, it was not an official

event at the state meet. Oxford's Mary Virginia Presley, recent OHS graduate Ken Presley's oldest sister, was one of the first ever state champions in the pole vault.

I'll be the first to speak out that the track at Bobby Holcomb Field should be named not just after Sam for what he has done in his professional career, but the Kendricks family as a whole. Without Scott pushing the pole vaulting event to be in the regular state meet, Sam may have gone to a different route in his career and may not have been involved in athletics after high school and instead would be a lot more focused in the U.S. Army reserve. Scott also led the charge to have the track and field programs to where they are today. The program is consistently producing state champions and championship

teams and producing athletes to compete in the national spotlight in high school.

It would be nice if a building or facility the Oxford School District has would be named after someone that is actually currently living today. It bugs me that there isn't one building or field the school district has that isn't named after someone that isn't already deceased.

Edwin Moak, Bobby Holcomb, Della Davidson, and Kayla Mize are among the few that have all done great things or have made significant accomplishments during the lives or were seen as great people by their classmates to have buildings or fields named after them. But I would rather not wait until another tragic event happens to a current or former OHS student to name another building after that person.

I would much rather not have anything named after me if something bad ever happened that ended my life.

Sam has just won the bronze medal at the Olympics and he would say it himself that he wouldn't be at this position without his family right there. I believe for all the accomplishments their family has done at the local level, college level, the international level and all the attention it has brought to this town, not to mention he practices at Oxford all the time, it should be the right thing to do if not the track and the football field have a major building or field named after this family and to be honored for it at an Oxford event with them in attendance.

“They had a good football team, but we didn't play New Albany football very well and I've been anxiously waiting for practice to get started so we can get a lot of these mistakes corrected and move on,” Johnny Hill said. “It was really frustrating to see and again, I think a lot of it was my fault because I assume these kids know more than they do. We're going to get to do a lot of tackling drills and a lot of drilling drills so we can learn fundamental football and get better.”

It's been almost a decade since Johnny Hill has coached linebackers and that came in an AllStar game in Australia. He said it was all relevent, whether it was offense or defense or special teams.

“It's coaches coaching and if you're on the offensive side of the ball, you better know defense and if you're on defense, you better know what they're doing offensively,” Hill said. “It's really not that different. I've enjoyed everything so far except

the way we played Friday night.”

Jake Hill, who led the Bulldogs to four wins in his first season in 2015, has enjoyed his father being a part of the staff. When it was announced that last season would be the last in Oxford, Jake Hilll said he joked with his dad that he would be coaching with him.

“Obviously it had some inneundo. I told him whenever he was ready, you're always going to have a job waiting,” Jake Hill said. “He did take some time, couple of months, where he didn't do anything but hunting and fishing and playing with his grand kids and working on projects and living life. He called me and said if you need me to help you, I'll help you. I said 'Well, obviously. I need you to help me.' We had some coaches leave and it just kind of worked out. I lost my d-line coach. Lost my offesnive coordinator, running backs coach, receivers coach so we had some money open in order to pay somebody. I think it was meant to happen with the way it happened and me having some guys leave and dad being able to just show up and coach, which was the kicker.”

Jake Hill said his dad arrives on campus “when he gets here.” With that being said, Johnny Hill still beats everyone down to the mower to cut grass.

“There are days when he is earlier than others. He keeps beating me to the mower when he knows I'm tied up and taken that away from me,” Jake Hill said with a smile. “I know he enjoys doing things like that and for me,not cutting

The Bulldogs' ninth grade team is mixed with the junior varsity which is

mixed in with the varsity.

Everyone takes ownership in regards to coaching all the kids. Jake Hill teaches four classes and then he's off to plan, and getting ready for the second half of

his day. Compared to last year, Jake Hill said he was a stronger, or better coach, than last year due to the year of experience. He's seen a lot of the “little things” for 37 years growing

up an home that focused so much on football.

“All the situations that my dad has been through, watching, learning, asking questions, even still asking him 'Hey, what would do in this situation?' whether it be football, out of football, dealing with a parent, booster club, administration,” Jake Hill said. “I hope I'm a better coach this year than I was last year and I hope I'm going to be better coach next year than I am this year. I always hope I'm continuing to get better at the craft I've chosen to do. I do think I'm stronger than a coach last year because I have that year of experience.”

And Jake Hill felt like his team is stronger having his father on the staff. The Bulldogs have responded to Johnny Hill, just like Jake Hill thought they were going to.

“Everybody that dad has coached, they respond to him well. They may hate him, but they respect him and they know he knows what he is talking about,” Jake Hill said. “Not a lot of people have that kind of pull over other people.

There are a lot of folks that really dislike Johnny Hill.

But they respect him. They know he is a straight shooter and he is going to do things the right way. I hope that has rubbed off in me and my coaching. It's funny, after practice, he will come up to me and say that was exactly what I would have said or you're saying the exact same things I said at one point or another. Sam Kendricks is the first American vaulter to earn a medal since Tim Mack won gold in 2004.

He finished behind Brazil's Thiago Braz da Silva and France's Renaud Lavillenie.

Gossett's leadership a key for Lafayette Lady Commodores

Harley Anne Gossett is a strong base for the Lafayette High cheerleading. That applies from both a routine standpoint, and from a leadership one as well. Gossett is set to begin her senior season cheering for the Lady Commodores.

Excited barely begins to describe how she feels about the 2016 year kicking off.

“I always wanted to be a cheerleader. It's been everything I've wanted (my career) to be. It's kind of sad knowing that this is going to be my last year to cheer to be with these people I've been cheering with,” said Gossett, who has been with the program since she was in seventh grade. “I'm very close with most of these girls.

I've been cheering with them since seventh grade and friends with them since before that.”

Time spent with everyone is the thing that Gossett enjoys the most. She actually enjoys practicing, and being around each other for so long has made cheerleading feel like a family. Madison Sharp and Canton Foley are the two others that Gossett is closest with.

“We always room together at camp and we kind of buddy up at practice. Madison is the other captain with me, so we're kind of the leaders of everybody,” Gossett said.

“We spend a lot of time

It's hard to tell people what they need to work on because I know what it's like to be younger and having the older people tell you need to be better at this.”

When Gossett first came out for cheerleading, she didn't have any friends. As she has gotten older, she's gotten closer to everyone.

“It's just great. I can't imagine going through high school without cheering,” Gossett said.

Friday nights are exciting to Gossett. She loves to hear the band, ranking them as the top thing outside of the actual game.

“That gets the crowd fired up and everyone gets excited,” she said adding that the Crosstown Classic with Oxford is the game she is looking forward to the most. “I want to see (Lafayette) beat everybody.”

The Friday night Gossett remembers the most

during her career involves a lot of rain, and that the Commodores were on the road.

“I can't remember where we were at, but everyone was like a rainbow. Everybody had different color rain jackets on,” Gossett said. “Our hair was all wet. It was very rainy.”

Homecoming last season was the game Gossett has enjoyed the most during her cheerleading career.

“There were some girls that were on team that were on the Homecoming court,” she said. “It was fun to cheer them on.”

Competition cheer is something else Gossett takes part in for Lafayette.

She likes how close everyone on that squad gets.

“We spend a lot of time together for regular cheer, but think about that times 10 for competition. It is every day of the school week, plus sometimes Friday nights before we go cheer,” Gossett said.

Dancing is the skill Gossett feels like she does the best. There was a time when it was stunting.

“I had a shoulder injury so I guess I'll have to stick to dancing this year,” she said. “It's hard to believe this is my last year. It has-

n't really kicked in. I know that last football game is going to be rough on everybody.”

Lafayette coach Jennifer Sharp said Gossett has been a vital member of the team for the past four years.

“She has been on the powerlifting team and she provides us with great strength,” Sharp said. “Her shoulder began slipping out of place last year and

caused her severe pain.

She has gone through rehab and works diligently to push herself to continue to be an asset to our team. Her strength as a base has helped make our team successful. Freeze, Rebels host kids of families killed in plane crash

words,” Freeze said. “I know the Oxford community though because I've lived here for five years and three before. I know that they will rally. I know that we're going to do our part in helping these young kids have a future that is secure. I know their families will, too. We're here to help. We've got all those kids here today from those families. It hit home for sure. One of the young girls is one of my daughter's good friends. I told our team that you're not promised another day and what we can do is rise up and be the best man that we can be, whether that's being a football player or just using the platform that God has given us to make a difference.”

Madison Manning was another child that Freeze, his staff and the team hosted late last week.

Manning has cystic fibrosis, and Freeze said he has been sent home because doctors can't do anything more him. Manning's

Hugh Freeze is more than just the head football coach of the Ole Miss Rebels. He is also a father to three children and he understands what the children of the three families who lost parents in Sunday's tragic plane crash are feeling. Many of the children who lost a mother and father were at practice Tuesday morning.

Defensive end Fadol Brown wore the cap of the Yalobusha Giants, the team of Luke Farese that was coached by his father Jason, while he posed for a picture with the kids.

Many of the other Rebels hugged the children, while Freeze meet with each one just before the start of drills.

“The hurt that I feel for those families, I went home and spent some time with my kids. I just can't imagine … you search for answers and you just at a total loss of

face,” Custis said of the kids. “I feel like they're a part of our family. Whatever happened to them, I feel like we can bring them into our family and love each other and stay together.”

Offensive lineman Sean Rawlings said he interacted with the kids at the start of practice.

“Tragedy strikes and these kids are out here and enjoying it and that was good for everybody to see these kids who have lost their parents like that,” Rawlings said. “It was good to see them catching balls and interacting with players. We signed footballs for them after and talked to them and had conversations about them playing baseball. It's sad and it makes you appreciate life a little bit more. It shows how strong these kids are to be out here and smiling and trying to make the best of the moment.”

Fair said there are positives for his 'Dores to build on

There were spots during Lafayette's jamboree with Southaven that head coach Michael Fair saw his Commodores play well. There were spots where he saw the team play really well. Outside of the one long run, on the first snap of defense, Southaven had, Fair liked what he saw from his defense last Friday night.

“I thought we played well defensively. We missed some tackles early and I think the speed of their backs was different than what we practiced against as far as a consistent basis in our tackling drills,” Fair said.

There were some hiccups on offense, Fair said, and some mistakes that thwarted drives.

“I do think our backs ran well and Will Vs. Horn Lake. Kickoff: 7 p.m. Radio: 105.1 FM (Ard) made some good decisions and some not-so-good decisions and he's going to learn from those,” Fair said. “I was really pleased with it. We have a great tool now to show our kids so they can improve on.”

Defensive back Tyler Williams looked good at catching passes at wide reciver, which is a new wrinkle for the Commodores this year. He did have a drop that would have moved the chains in the second quarter, but his addition to the offense makes Fair feel confident about what the skill players can produce.

“We have three guys that we're going to roll in to play that spot. So he will be there some, Brandon Turnage will be there some.

Xavier Martin will play some there as well and we feel good about three older guys that have kind of been around with the exception of Brandon,” Fair said. “We have some really good athletes on the outside.

We're not going to go both ways with those guys all night, but we feel real good about bringing (Williams) over. And just because on Top College Games - Sept. 1 - Nov. 27 we have him over doesn't mean he's going to get the ball every time either. We have and Top Pro Games - Sept. 1 - Feb. 5 some other weapons around him. He's definitely a threat offensively, and he will play over there this year.”

Fair had to shuffle some things around on the offensive line with a couple of inCompete for Local and National* juries, but he is getting some guys back and Weekly Prize and Grand Prize* feels like the unit has improved overall. Tay Tay Owens, who used to play running back, looked good making tackles from his new safety spot. He made two big plays against Southaven, his first action on defense since middle school.

“He ran through the alley and made a tackle down on the goal line and then they tried to throw a corner route and he came from the safety position and knocked it out of bounds,” Fair said. “There were two plays down there on the goal line that not a lot of folks make to be honest with you. I'm not going to say he won't play offense for us because he did have two or three catches the other day. He could end up playing some tailback before it's all over, but it's going to be something that we add to our offensive gameplan as needed. He's the starting safety for us and we feel real confident with him being back there.”

The Eagles of Horn Lake, which lost to Lafayette in last season's opener, have a lot of speed, Fair said.

“They are much improved from where they've been. They have a senior running back who can really go. The first play in the jamboree the other day he took one 70 for a touchdown against North Panola,” Fair said. “They are physical on the defensive front and their linebackers run to the ball well. Their defensive backs, they like to mix up coverages and they seem to be in the right spots. It will be a big test for us. We're excited about the opportunity. There is no slouch coming down here from Lafayette County.”

And because the Commodores aren't good enough as a team to not play well and win, Fair was stressing doing the little things right.

“We have to play well and we to tackle and force turnovers and not turn the ball over,” Fair said. “We have to do that to have a good football team and we're certainly not good enough to take anybody lightly on our schedule. It's a big challenge for us and I've been impressed with what I've seen from Horn Lake on film.”

The opener is also bigger this season for the Commodores since they don't play in Week 2.

“We want to be our best and play our best and we're going to go out there and play well. A lot of folks say that you get better the most after your Week 1 ballgame and that's the thing, we don't have the luxury of playing Week 2,” Fair said. “Our greatest game needs to be this week. We're treating this week like game two in a lot of ways from improvement. It's a challenge for us, but our guys will be motivated.

Chargers ready to correct mistakes in season opener

All the mistakes that the Oxford Chargers made against Charleston last Friday night in jamboree action can be corrected. That's the way head coach Chris Cutcliffe looked at things following an evaluation of the two quarters.

“It's things that we will be addressing all week in practice. There were also things we did well. I thought we communicated well from the sidelines on defense,” Cutcliffe said. “We got lined up correctly. We did pretty well with penalties. I thought our penalty discipline was pretty good.”

The four sacks and three turnovers were the biggest mistakes committed by the Chargers. Only on one of the sacks did an offensive lineman get beat in protection, Cutcliffe pointed out.

“The other three were missed assignments whether it was on the quarterback or lineman,” Cutcliffe said. “The good thing about that is we can correct it, we can fix that. You would be really concerned if we were getting beat regularly in pass

protection. Turnovers have got to get better. You're not going to win turning the ball over three times in a half. We have addressed it and we have to do better.”

Oxford's roster is still young, or inexperienced, and there is going to be a natural learning curve. This past Friday, there were just three returners on offense for the Chargers.

Two of them were on the offensive line in Colton Skidmore and Ashton Stewart. Wide receivers Preston Perkins and Barry Flowers each have experience, but both not to the amount of DK Metcalf.

“So we started three new offensive linemen against a really, really good Charleston front. The good thing for me is they were correctable issues,” Cutcliffe said. “And we've worked to get those corrected.”

Southaven defeated Lafayette in jamboree action last week. The quarterback who leads the Class 6A squad is athletic, who seems to possess the ability to make plays with his legs.

“They're always well coached.

Coach (Ed) Rich always does a good job with them. They're disciplined and athletic on defense,” Cutcliffe

said. “They will be a great challenge.

We just have to execute better across the board than we did last week and we have to take care of the football. I know that it's a tough schedule, but that's been our philosophy for a while now, to challenge ourselves during non division play. All four of non division games are huge challenges for us and I think that's a good thing because it puts you in some situations where you have to step up and make plays before you get into district play.”

The other thing that Cutcliffe likes about his team is the chemistry. He said the players get along exceptionally well.

“They encourage and support each other. I think they have been very positive and I think that stuff really pays off when something doesn't go well,” Cutcliffe said. “Instead of starting to point figures and cause issues, they can come closer BILL BARKSDALE | OXFORD CITIZEN together and come through it.
