LOU Excel by 5 to hold Fall Playdate

The United Way of Oxford and Lafayette County’s Excel by 5 Coalition will be having their Fall Playdate this weekend as a way for parents of young children in the community to gather together, socialize and build relationships.

Excel by 5 works to make sure that local children are prepared for success in the school system when it is time for them to enter kindergarten. The coalition hopes to set up children to succeed not only in school but in the rest of their lives by building important foundations in early childhood.

Excel by 5 is a statewide organization that guides local division, including the LOU Excel by 5 Coalition. In the spring of 2013, the LOU community was certified as “child-friendly” by the statewide organization and the local chapter has been connecting local parents

with resources that can benefit and nurture the wellbeing of their children ever since.

On Saturday, the coalition will be hosing their Fall Playdate in Abbeville’s new Gordon Community and Cultural Center. The organization organizes quarterly playdates throughout the year for the community to come together. Playdates in the past have been held at the Jackson Avenue Center, but they decided to move this fall’s playdate to Abbeville in an effort to reach out to more families

on the edges of Lafayette County.

Edy Dingus has been working with the LOU Excel by 5 Coalition as an AmeriCorps VISTA for the past couple months. She came to the program because of her interest in education and serving the local community, of which she has been a part of for the past 11 years.

“This is something that I’ve always wanted to do, but I never quite knew how best to achieve a life in service,” she said. “A friend of mine suggested that the VISTA program might be a

good fit for me. I’m here because education is something that is very dear to me, especially early childhood education. There’s nothing like starting from the beginning.”

Dingus was placed with Excel by 5, and she said that she feels like it was the perfect fit for what she wanted to do in the community because she feels so strongly about education. She describes her role with the coalition as a “support role.”

She takes minutes during meetings of the steering committee, attends focus group meetings, coordinates and plans events and works make sure everything is running as smoothly and

productively as possible.

During this weekend’s playdate, the Gordon Center will be stocked with developmentally appropriate toys, books and activities provided by Oxford’s Family Resource Center. The coalition will be offering free car seat checks and demonstrations during the event to help parents make sure their little ones are buckled up in the safest way possible. A drawing will be held and one attendee will win a free car seat. Experienced volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions parents might have and offer suggestions for different play techniques to engage both parent and child. Volunteers

will also be reading to children during the playdate.

Dingus said that she and everyone at Excel by 5 are hoping that this playdate will be able to reach more parents and children and allow them to build relationships with other local families.

“We’re working to provide an environment where members of the LOU community with young children can come together and meet one another,” Dingus said. “Most parents of young children are often really busy. Their child takes up a lot of their time. I think that if they have the opportunity to speak with other parents and share stories and knowledge, it would be an invaluable resource to them.

We want to help provide that sort of familial support that a lot of families may be missing.”

OHS to host Walk for a Cure event Friday FROM OXFORD CITIZEN REPORTS

Oxford High School will walk for a cure this Friday and the community is invited to lace up their tennis shoes and join the cause.

The second annual Oxford High School Breast Cancer Walk will take place in front of the gym, located at 101 Charger Loop, from 7:30 until 8 a.m.

This year alone, 2,050 Mississippi women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health.

That’s why Rose Hickey, event coordinator for the annual breast cancer walk and fundraiser, encourages

students, teachers, parents, and community members to get involved and help raise awareness about early prevention and detection.

"Statistics show that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer," Hickey said. “This event is a great way to bring awareness to an important health issue and to engage our students for such a great cause."

According to the Mississippi State Department of Health, Mississippi is one of ten states with the lowest breast cancer screening rate for older women. More than one-quarter of Mississippi’s women do not receive regu-

lar screenings that could save their lives.

"Any woman can get breast cancer, at any age," Hickey said. "We all have someone in our life who has been directly impacted by breast cancer. This walk is also a great way to honor them."

Anyone can join in on the walk, and no registration is required in order to participate. A light breakfast will be provided for participants, and prizes will be awarded.

Colston hopes to continue work with Lafayette County School Board EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first profile in a series that highlight the candidates running for school board in the Lafayette County School District. The election will be held Nov. 8

Bob Colston of the Lafayette County School Board has been working for nearly 12 years to make his local school district the best it can possibly be.

Colston was first elected to the school board in January of 2005. He decided to run because his children were in the district, and he has always believed that prosperous a school district is the key to a prosperous community.

“I had children in the schools, and I wanted to make sure they got a good education,” Colston said.

“And that’s what they did. I hope that I played a little part in that. It’s good for the whole county, the whole economy of the county to have strong school districts, and we’re very lucky to have two here in the county.”

Though he was born in Oxford, Colston attended school in Olive Branch. He said that though he didn’t live here growing up, he and his family spent nearly every weekend and most of his childhood summers in Oxford. His family ties to the area go back generations. Colston currently lives on a plot of land his great, great grandfather purchased in 1920. Colston has a history in the community and said that Lafayette County has al-

ways felt like home.

For 32 years, he worked as a postal worker, delivering mail throughout rural parts of the county. Colston said that over his time with the post office, the business of mail delivery has changed significantly. He described it as being the best job in the world back when he was a full-time mail carrier. He enjoyed the independence of it and the opportunity it gave him to meet different people and just go around seeing the community he loved every day.

Colston technically retired from the post office in 2007, but found he just could not stay away. For the past few years he has been working as an independent contractor, delivering mail in the community though not technically being a federal employee with the post office.

Members of the Lafayette County School Board rotate between secretary and chairman of the board every year. This year, Colston has been serving as the board’s secretary. The secretary is in charge of a lot of the board’s paperwork and is in place to fulfill the duties of the board chairman if he or she is unable to complete their duties for whatever reason.

Colston considers the work of the school board to be meaningful and fulfilling. He loves being able to contribute and work to steer the school district in a direction that is beneficial to both the district and the community.

A few years ago, the

Lafayette County School Board got the right to appoint a superintendent rather than the position being held by an elected official. Colston, along with the rest of the school board at the time, voted to appoint Adam Pugh, who is currently serving as superintendent.

“He had served as our high school principal before taking a job as the superintendent over in Pontotoc,” Colston said of Pugh. “When he applied, we knew he’d be a good fit because he was our principal. We were basically hiring him back.”

Colston said that though he and Pugh do not agree on absolutely every issue that arises, he respects him and considers the working relationship he has with the superintendent to be one of cooperation. Three Blind Wines spills into the Powerhouse next week

Next Tuesday night at the Powerhouse, the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council will be hosting their annual, unconventional fundraiser and winetasting known as Three Blind Wines.

All proceeds raised by the event go to benefit the arts council and the Moak Scholarship Fund equally.

Tickets for the event cost $40 a couple. Attendees must come in teams of two, whether that other person be a spouse, friend or random human snagged from a nearby coffee shop.

Each couple is required to purchase three bottles of wine for the event in addition to their tickets. These can be the cheapest bottles of wine available at the liquor store. Organizers just want participants to get a wine they enjoy and would like to share with others.

This wine can be purchased at Star Package, Kiamies, PJ’s, Magnolia Wine and Spirits or Poppa’s Wine

and Spirits. If the three bottles are purchased from these participating stores, they can be left at the store in someone’s name and they will be delivered to the Powerhouse in time for the event so that attendees do not have to worry about bringing them to the venue.

Those wishing to attend the party, but do not want or are unable to decide on one type of wine can pay $100 and have wine selected for them as a part of the sommelier package.

Attendees are given a sample cup and will be poured 2 ounces of every wine brought to the event.

Spit buckets will be provided at the event for those who aren’t up for sampling several dozen wines and the alcohol that comes with that process. Once couples have made their rounds and decided which wine they enjoyed the most, they cast a vote. Votes are tallied and a winner is declared.

The person whose wine received the most votes walks away with everyone’s third

bottle of wine. Last year the winner of Three Blind Wines walked away with nearly five cases of wine.

The arts council has been organizing this fundraiser for the past five years now.

YAC Director Wayne Andrews said that Three Blind Wines fits into its yearly programing of unusual and playful fundraisers.

“It’s a nice evening out,” Andrews said. “We try to have these things for people who are looking for something different at this time of year. These are fun evenings out that can fit a lot a lot of people’s budget.

You’d be spending this much money going out to a nice restaurant in town, but when you come here, you’re going to have a good time, and the money being spent is going to support local charities.”

Gourmet cheeses, different fruits and various snacks will be provided at the event to give patrons something to munch on and cleanse their pallets in between samples.

There are no rules or protections in place to ensure that no one buys the same kind of wine. People are free to pick any wine they wish with zero parameters other than it being something they enjoy and would like to share with community. Andrews said he just wants everyone to come out and have a good time while supporting local art

and scholarship.

“What’s really interesting about wine, is that, say two groups bring the exact same bottle of chardonnay, the fact that maybe you had a red before you tried one and a white before you tried the other one, it’s going to change how you taste that wine,” Andrews said. “That's what this is really all about, exploring tastes and trying new things. It’s simple. You don’t have to dress up. It’s different evening out and a playful wine tasting that's not

gonna cost you a zillion dollars.”

The arts council has partnered with Flying Tuk for the event to make sure that people will have a ride to and from the event if needed. As an avid young reader, David Crews recognized words had power.

“I read religiously,” he said. “I love a good line, a pithy line, a heartfelt line, a poisonous line.”

At first, he collected quotations from history’s great minds, including Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, but he eventually realized his fellow Mississippians could overflow his cup with wisdom and humor.

Obviously, William Faulkner was a primary source: • “I believe that ‘fact’ has almost no connection with the ‘truth’…

• “I’d want to come back a buzzard. Nothing hates him or envies him or needs him.

He is never bothered or in danger, and he can eat anything.”

• “Man is free, and he is responsible, terribly responsible.”

Crews also copied phrases, sentences and paragraphs from Eudora Welty, Shelby Foote, Barry Hannah, Elvis Presley, Muddy Waters, Oprah Winfrey, Tennessee Williams, Tammy Wynette, Leontyne Price, Medgar Evers, Archie Manning and many more.

“I had been collecting them for 30 years probably,” said Crews, a 62-year-old Oxford resident. “I had just hand-written them down.”

About three years ago, he wondered if the words that meant so much to him might mean something to other people.

“Then I had to type about 2,000 quotations into a computer,” Crews said.

“Once I did that, I realized I had to categorize them.

They had to be done thematically. It was kind of a labor of love to knit it together properly.”

The result is “The Mississippi Book of Quotations.”

The 220-page hardback will be released by Nautilus Publishing on Oct. 23, and the book is priced at $24.95.

Crews gathered all the quotes, compiled them on pages and then in a computer, and put them into their different categories.

Even so, he said it’s easy to be humble about his part in the process.

Carwile finds strength during her bout with cancer

Stephanie Carwile didn't want to believe that the small lump she felt underneath her left breast was cancer. She was 38, and the mother of a five month old.

She convinced herself that it was just a clogged milk duct due to breast feeding Addi Grace.

Despite her husband's plea to get things checked out, Carwile continued to live her daily life, staying busy as a hairdresser like she had done for close to 20 years. All the time she worked, and raised her family, the lump grew, and very rapidly. In just a few months, the lump went from being the size of a grape to a baseball. When it got that big, Carwile finally broke down and went for a mammogram.

“The young lady doing the mammogram didn't have to say a word. I could tell by the look on her face that it wasn't good,” Carwile recalled. “She immediately took me back to my room and sent the doctor in. He called immediately to a surgeon to do in-office biopsy that same day.”

Everything happened quickly and then the waiting game started for Carwile, who was told she would get the results in a few days. She finally got the

news on Oct. 8, 2012 and that the lump was indeed cancerous.

“I felt like the breath was knocked from my chest. I went home and cried myself to sleep,” Carwile said.

“After discussing my options with my doctor, we decided that it was best to take off both breasts.”

There was another suspicious lump on the other breast, and Carwile was told that if she didn't have the surgery, there was a chance that the cancer could come back. She later said it was a no brainer to have them removed. Carwile did undergo chemotherapy treatments.

She had five before surgery, and another three after the surgery was performed.

“I also opted to have mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. I was terrified as I stepped into the hospital to do my blood work,” she said. “I had to have a port placed. As I sat in the room with tears in my eyes waiting to have my blood drawn the strongest lady I ever met in and knelt before me. She said 'May I pray with you? Please pray with me,' I told her. have to fight harder than you have ever fought. You have to believe more than you ever have and have faith when you will be in the darkest days of your life.”

Carwile said when the lady stood up, she said to fight like a girl. Carwile gave everything she had to God, with the help of her family, she was able to come through the ordeal. She credited all of her direct caregivers, Dr. Bo Martin, Dr. Dennis Morgan, Dr. Walker Byars and Dr. Dan Shell.

Morgan is the oncologist that directly helped Carwile, while Shell is the plastic surgeon who Carwile said she spent the most time with.

The mastectomy happened in January and she has been clear of cancer ever since. Carwile has undergone an MRI every year the past four since just to make sure she is clear. She has been going to the doctor every six months just to make sure things were going well, and now she won't have to go back until 2017.

Carwile came out of the cancer stronger as a person. Her faith in God increased. She told her husband that while she was the weakest physically, she was the strongest mentally.

“You just get into this mindset that this is it, this is what I have to do and you do it,” Carwile said.

“My oncologist told me in the beginning that I had to have a positive attitude. That helps with your outcome. If you get down and give up, it makes it harder.”

There are others who Carwile have talked to about her bout with cancer. Dr. Shell had Carwile talk with a young lady once who was having a hard time, and

scared. They ate lunch together and Carwile was able to encourage her and get through the ordeal.

“Other women need to encourage other women who are going through it. The lady that I mentioned created a group called the Sassy Sparrows and they were meeting during the time I was going through and she would have speakers come to help encourage them,” Carwile said.

“There was another woman who was doing hats for those going through it and we were encouraging other women with the other groups. I do think it's good to bring awarness to it through the month of October, or any month.

It's always good to bring awareness because women do need to be aware. I had the mindset that it couldn't happen to me.”

Since the surgery, Carwile learned a lot more about cancer and how it can affect people, not just women, of all ages. She also went back to school and became a nurse because she wasn't able to stand on her feet and be a hairdresser any longer. She is now employeed at Oxford ENT Consultants.

“In bringing people back, I do get an opportunity to talk to them if they've had a mammogram and that type of thing,” Carwile said.

“Everybody thinks it hurts so bad and it doesn't hurt all. There is a little bit of pressure, but it's not supposed to hurt. Every single person is different. Some do have higher thresholds of pain. children’s and youth activities around the church. The sale of the pumpkins continues to serve as one of the biggest sources of income to fund youth programming in the church year-round.

St. Peter’s contracts with a company known as Pumpkin Patch USA to bring the patch to Oxford.

Every year the company sends a semi truck filled with pumpkins that are delivered the first Sunday of October every year. Volunteers from the church and the police department work to outline where the pumpkins will go on the lawn and form an human chain to pass pumpkins from the truck to their designated spots on the lawn of the church. They have to map out where pumpkins will go in order to ensure that there will be plenty of walking room for families attempting to navigate the pumpkin patch. This year David Shaw who owns Sneed’s

Hardware helped out by bringing a forklift for the church to use for some of the heaviest boxes of little pumpkins. All of the bigger pumpkins have to come off of the truck one at a time by hand.

The pumpkins come from a Navajo reservation in New Mexico. St. Peter’s effectively works as a vendor for Pumpkin Patch USA. The church is given specific guidelines on pricing and sells each pumpkin based on measurement. St. Peter’s keeps a portion of the overall sales made in the pumpkin patch and puts 100 percent of the proceeds toward youth programming in the church.

Kara Howland serves as the director of Christian formation at the church.

Her role is to coordinate and facilitate all education related events and activities within the church for all age groups, though she primarily works with little ones. Howland has been working with St. Peter’s since 2011 and looks forward to the pumpkin

“I love that it brings the

community together,” Howland said. “It’s an opportunity for the parish and community to come together. If any of our college kids need volunteer hours, they can come in and help us sell pumpkins.

know it’s an annual event and they’ll come back year after year to take photos in the pumpkin patch.”

Howland said that she has had seniors in high school come to do senior portraits in the pumpkin patch because they have taken a photo every year of their life in the patch. One of her favorite memories from the pumpkin patch is when she saw a couple get engaged in the patch one year. A young man took a small pumpkin and cut a hole in the top with his pocketknife. Once his girlfriend arrived, he had her open the pumpkin and a photographer was there to snap photos of her saying “yes.” Howland said everyone there clapped and cheered for the newly engaged couple.

The pumpkin patch reaches outside of the church in a variety of different ways, according to Howland. The Oxford Police Department keeps an eye on the patch to ward off vandals when there are not any volunteers out working. When any of the

pumpkins spoil, a local pig farmer comes and takes them away to feed to his animals.

Amber Gray is a parishioner at St. Peter’s and was working as a volunteer to help sell pumpkins Tuesday morning. Gray’s youngest son was with her playing in the pumpkin patch. She said that all three of her children have grown up with it being a fall tradition in their family to go and sell pumpkins.

“We do this every year,” she said. “It’s usually very nice weather out and the pumpkins are just so pretty to look at. You get to sit outside and you’re not stuck in front of a computer or a phone and you get to enjoy being outside.

Charlene Mize loved us all like family

Hamburger steaks have never tasted any better in heaven than they do today. Charlene Mize, the matriarch of the Beacon restaurant since it opened in April of 1959, passed away in her sleep early Wednesday morning. She was the glue that not only held Oxford's longest tenured eating establishment together, she was the guiding force for a large family that loved her, and valued her kindness so much.

Known to many as Nena – a nickname that originated from her nephew Tommy Brown when he was little – Mize saw Oxford grow from a town of dirt roads to one that could host over 60,000 Ole Miss football fans. She grew up on a farm in Taylor and even though she lived a block off the Square for decades, she always

told people that's where she was from Taylor if they asked. Nena was true to her roots, and this county, and the people that lived here, were special to her.

She loved God, her family and her friends tremendously. She knew what her customers would order when they walked into the Beacon. She knew just how much to charge them, and you had to be family to get a break with her at the register. She was all business, she was a hard worker and she was respected. Up until her mid 80s, she locked that restaurant up at night.

And then drove across town to home. Even up until the last few weeks of her life, she ventured out to the Beacon to see everyone for as long as she could. She loved to travel late in life, but she always liked coming home. And when she was on the road, she wanted to eat at a place like the Beacon.

I learned a lot from Nena over the last 18 years. The first time I really met her, beyond the Beacon counter, was at her house with her daughter Sue Ellen Elmore. I was barely dating her oldest grand daughter Paige, but she welcomed me to the family. We clicked from the beginning. I lived with Nena for a year before Paige and I were married.

She told me about Jesse, her husband who many knew as Mr. Flem, and how they met. Nena's grandfather was the tallest man in Lafayette County when she was little, and she told me how the kids could always spot him when they were on the Square. They rode wagons in town back in the 1920s.

I asked her if they ever went to the movies growing up. The answer was no or very rarely. Nena played basketball growing up and school dances were about the only real outside en-

tertainment for them.

Farm work translated to a strong work ethic, which made her perfect for the Beacon. She loved working alongside her Jesse, who she is reunited with

now. The first couple of Oxford restaurants are making many happy above us today. Our town will never be the same without Nena, but we are all blessed that she was

Living Foods Wellness Cafe' serves the soul, body

Six years ago when Melody Sharp’s son was born, she realized he had a milk protein allergy.

Sharp became an avid label reader, and the more she investigated food, the more she was shocked at some of the ingredients that were allowed.

As she learned more about the food industry, it changed the way her family ate at home and the choices she made in the grocery store. When she realized her second son had a gluten intolerance, she made the choice to eliminate gluten and most grains from her family’s diet. When it became frustrating to try and dine anywhere as a family, an idea for a local healthy eatery became a vision and business goal for Sharp. In February 2014, Living Foods Wellness Café and Juicery was established in Oxford. The restaurant features numerous grab and go wellness meals (most of which are gluten free, dairy free and paleo) some harder to find grocery items, as well as a full menu of healthy, organic food, juices and smoothie bar, and natural market. Living Foods also offers catering options.

“We started eating healthier as a family and went gluten free because we didn’t want my son to grow up feeling different. What happened as a result is that we all felt better," she said. "I kept thinking, ‘If I could create a place where we could all feel good about eating, what would that look like?’ I prayed about it, and I could hear God saying ‘Go for it!

I’ve got you! Step out!’ So we did.

And here we are today. I didn’t start this place because I read somewhere healthy eating is a trend that’s good for business.

When your personal life is changed, you can’t help but want to share it."

With menu items like hot quinoa bowls, (one of Sharp’s personal favorites is the Mexican Bowl which comes with fajita peppers, onions, corn, and black beans tossed in salsa and dressed with avocado and spicy aoli) sandwiches like the turkey melt which includes hormone and antibiotic turkey served on sprouted Ezekiel bread from 7D farm in Water Valley, and a local fan favorite — the avocado toast which comes with organic hass avocado, hemp hearts, spinach, sriracha and a side of fruit.

The kid’s menu features a grilled cheese on sprouted grain bread with Harvarti cheese, and non GMO chicken breast grilled then sliced.

Kids choices come with organic juice or milk and organic applesauce or blue corn chips. Also on the menu is a selection of salads that are prepared fresh and daily served on a bed of lettuce and with a side of fresh fruit. Customers can choose between one scoop (snack size) two scoops (small meal) or three scoops of Cucumber Salad (chopped local tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, and hass avocado,) Chinese Chicken Slaw (red and green cabbage, carrots, bell peppers, sunflower and sesame seeds, chives, almonds, cilantro, chopped chicken tossed in sesame ginger vinaigrette,) or Curried Garbanzo Salad (garbanzo beans, curry, celery, chives, golden raisins and vegan mayo.)

“We enjoy a very positive atmosphere. We’re the place that serves food that is good for you and we genuinely care about our customers," Sharp said. "We know their names, we know their kids’ names. We listen. We’ll pray

with you, cry with you, laugh with you. People feel at home here. We have something for everyone whether you’re vegan, paleo or anything in between."

Living Foods is now featuring kombucha on tap, along with nitro brew coffee. High Point coffee is now carrying the café’s homemade cookies, and soon will feature bottle juices there as well.

“My vision for Living Foods is larger than I think I even realize right now. My goals and hopes are more to do with the people who walk in the door than the business itself," she said. "I believe what we’re doing changes people’s lives. That is my goal with Living Foods: to transform people’s lives. Healthy food and juices are simply the vehicle through which that is accomplished. We do have a very exciting addition we are hoping to add by the end of the year that will allow us to touch more people with what we’re doing. I was inspired to eat organically from my children and nudging from my own spirit, which I believe is God’s way of teaching me to love and cherish the body he’s entrusted to me. I enjoy many aspects of my business. The difference I know we are making in the lives of our customers and employees is probably the most rewarding. I love hearing stories of how our food is impacting people’s health for the better, or

making it easier on families who want to eat better but maybe didn’t have time to make that happen and we fill in the gap for them."

asketball season is less than a month from starting at Ole Miss. The Rebels, coached by Andy Kennedy, have some interesting pieces to work with on the roster, and Kennedy was upbeat about the way this year's group has worked so far.

Another bit of good news for the program came Monday night when Devontae Shuler made a verbal pledge to the program. The four-star standout may be a year from playing for the Rebels, but his commitment is very noteworthy because of his skills. The 6foot-2 combo guard from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia chose the Rebels over Oklahoma State and South Carolina, among others.

He is the kind of player that can do a lot of different things, and he plays at a school that is always filled with talent. If things go well with him, then the Rebels could start landing some of the nation's top high school talent for years to come.

Steve Smith coaches Shuler at Oak Hill. He has won over 1,000 games nine national championships and coached dozens of players who went on to play in the NBA. Shuler is one of the best defenders Smith has coached, and that's saying a lot.

“What I like about Devontate is he is a two-way player. He plays on both ends of the court. Some guys will play defense just because they know it keeps them on the floor,” Smith said. “Devontae plays defense because TURN TO SHULER PAGE 23

Terrific Trio Positive approach has paid off for Lafayette volleyball

As the 2016 season has gone on, the Lafayette Lady Commodores have improved gradually thanks to the leadership of their three seniors. Head coach Clint Jordan has a competitive team, one headed to the Class II playoffs, thanks to the steady play of CaraAnne Sallis, Kirkland Pruitt and Orianna Shaw.

All three serve as team captains, and all three help lead in their own way. Heading into the season, there were many who felt the Lady Commodores had lost too much from the roster to be a force on the court this year. The naysayers didn't realize just how good the seniors could be, and how they could mesh a team together.

“Those three do mean a

lot. They've been with me since I got here, when they were sophomores, and to see them grow and develop as players has been exceptional,” Jordan said. “To really see the leadership they provide in a positive manner, I don't know if I've had three leaders that are this positive and able to keep people together since I've been coaching. It's a good group. There are times where you have one or two that are good, but this whole group of seniors, they're great people.”

Jordan even admitted he didn't expect the Lady Commodores to be in the position they were in late in the season from a wins standpoint. Heading into Tuesday's match with New Hope, Lafayette had 17 wins on the ledger.

“I was worried because they are so kind that they

could get everyone together.

I thought we could have a good year because we have good volleyball players, but we are lacking in the scoring department,” Jordan said.

“Because of their leadership, and their positivity, we've gotten better at that.

Better than I thought we could get. They don't get down on each other. They may hang their head if they make a mistake, but the other one is there to pick them up and tell them next ball. Because of that, we've been able to shake off some bad plays.”

One of the examples Jordan pointed to came in the most recent meeting with Oxford. Down 21-9 in the third set, the Lad Commodores came roaring back to make things much more interesting.

Special Group Lady Chargers have had a fantastic 2016 season

A special group of seniors barely begins to define the six players that Tara Ross has had the pleasure of coaching at Oxford this fall. This season has been a wonderful, and memorable, one for the Lady Chargers. Heading into Tuesday's match with Lake Cormorant, Oxford had won 16 in a row. With four wins in the Volley for a Cure tournament this past weekend, the Lady Chargers were an astounding 26-4 overall, which was the second best record in their classification in the state.

The Lady Chargers won their division and as a result, they will host a team this coming Tuesday in the first round.

“Last year was such a disappointment with our loss at Corinth. We really talked all summer about being mentally tough and growing up and learning to push ourselves and take it to the next level. We said it has to be about us as a team and I feel like we've done that,” Ross said.

No. 12 Rebels refreshed heading to play at No. 22 Arkansas

Even if the Ole Miss Rebels didn't get all the mistakes ironed out, they should be refreshed going to play at Arkansas. The Rebels, who moved up two spots in the latest AP Top 25 poll to No. 12, lost a heartbreaker to the No. 22 Razorbacks at home last season. And two years ago, the Rebels were shutout 30-0.

Two weeks ago, the Rebels (3-2 overall, 1-1 in the SEC) gained a measure of revenge against the Memphis Tigers.

Head coach Hugh Freeze doesn't like to use revenge as a motivating factor, but losing two straight is surely motivating. Freeze said that the last two meetings with Arkansas were totally different.

“The first one was in November in Fayetteville, the weather was awful and we were disappointed after a Laquon Treadwell injury that kind of nocked us out of things. I didn’t do a good job getting our team ready to play,” Freeze said. “Offen-

“A lot of it has to do with the tight ends that they had last year, they have some good ones this year also,” Freeze said. “The way they use them, you have to add to

the box to try to stop their run and then their quarterback that played extremely well, when you do that and using their tight ends and wide outs to win some oneon-ones and we struggled stopping that last year.”

Freeze is focused on the plan to beat Arkansas this year instead of what happened in the past. If the Rebels are going to end a two-game losing streak to the Razorbacks, they will have to find a way to slow

LHS senior back to work after her 'off' week

Gabrielle Dunn will be back to work this Friday night when the Lafayette Commodores travel to play at New Albany. The senior cheerleader didn't miss last week's game with the Lions of Tunica-Rosa Fort, but she served in a much different capacity at William L. Buford Stadium. Dunn was crowned Homecoming Queen and her time on the sidelines was spent waving at friends and family instead of cheering on the football team.

Dunn had no idea she would be named queen. She was thrilled that so many people turned out to vote for her. Three years after serving as a maid on the court, Dunn was able to wear the crown this year, and share the moment with her “sisters” as she called the rest of her teammates.

“This is my top moment now,” Dunn said about her biggest memory on a football field. “I love football and I love getting out here and cheering for my boys.”

Dunn is a back spot for the team, which means she holds the girls up in the air to help add extra support. She has been a member of the cheerleading team the past three seasons, which means she got into things late.

“I just decided to try out for it and I got it,” she said. “It was as simple as that. I always wanted to be a cheer-

leader. I always wanted to cheer on Fridays so I went and tried out.”

This year's win over Oxford is Dunn's favorite game. She said it felt awesome to finally earn a win over the Chargers. Dillon Woods, her first cousin, is the player she buys snacks for before each game.

“We're very close. He's like my brother,” she said. “He's very smart.”

Woods has a grade point average of 4.2 and like her first cousin, Dunn has a fantastic average of 3.4.

Lafayette coach Jennifer Sharp wasn't surprised that Dunn was the one who won the election because she has such a great heart.

“She loves everybody and she is so good to everybody,” Sharp said. “She has the motivational spirit and everyone just takes Gabby in. It speaks volumes that she was chosen queen.”

When it comes time to help the cheerleading team, Sharp praised how well Dunn does a back spot.

“She works and cheers and doing competition cheer is a little bit difficult. She has also gotten some work done on her knee, so that keeps her out of being on the competition team,” Sharp said. “As for her position on the team, she does a fantastic job. She is very strong. Friday Night Previews: Week 9 Lafayette looking to remain focused against NA Bulldogs

Michael Fair went into Lafayette's fall break with a big smile on his face.

That smile didn't diminish any when the coaching staff reviewed the 56-8 win over Tunica-Rosa Fort.

“We were happy with the effort we got from our kids Thursday night. It was a complete game in all three phases and pretty much for all of the game, we had a lot of intensity and I thought we executed at a high level,” Fair said.

Up next for the Commodores in Division 2-4A play is a road meeting with New Albany. Lafayette, which has won five straight games, started work on the Bulldogs Saturday morning. Former Oxford assistant coach Jake Hill is the head coach of the Bulldogs, while his father, Johnny, is the defensive coordinator. Both are used to matching up with the Commodores each fall.

“They're a really well coached team. They've had some injuries, but those guys are playing really hard and they give us a lot of problems with the offensive packages that they have,” Fair said.

“They do a lot of formations. They're good on special teams. They're a good football team.”

Lafayette is in the driver's seat in regards to the 2-4A standings right now.

They are the only team that hasn't lost a game, and a win over the Bulldogs would official secure a playoff spot. A season

“I think that they feel good about where we are and how well we are playing, but we can't have a let up,” Fair said. “In this district, you have a few teams that can really jump off and knock someone out of

that driver's seat. That's something we don't talk a whole lot about but we do want to bring a lot of effort and intensity to every game.

“We have three regular season games left and we're going to demand that they lock in for these three weeks. We set several goals and to win this district is one of our main goals,” Fair added. “We feel like if we do that, it puts us in position for our next goal which is the state championship. This is a big game and it's huge in

the sense of the weight it carries for the playoffs.

We're really going to work hard on New Albany. It's a big game for us.”

The Bulldogs improved to 3-5 on the season last week with a win over Byhalia. On defense, the Bulldogs have given several different looks and different fronts.

“Going against a Coach Hill defense, you don't know what to expect but you know they're going to be sound in what they do,” Fair said. “The one good thing we have going for us

is this time of year, we've seen just about everything. I think that's a good thing. We've seen even fronts and odd fronts and Bear fronts and a lot of different styles of defense by our eighth game. We have to review all of those this week to get ready for what New Albany may bring.”

New Albany will spread the ball out offensively, sometimes with four wide receivers to one side. Fair said there have been times lately where the backfield has been filled with a number of players, includ-

ing an H-back/fullback type blocker like Onsby.

“They also have a really fast running back that can kind of hit you up between the tackles,” Fair said.

Friday Night Previews: Week 9 OHS Chargers host New Hope Trojans for Homecoming

For the first time all season, the Oxford Chargers have a winning streak.

Thanks to a win at Lewisburg Friday night, the Chargers have now won two straight games in Division 15A play. Oxford coach Chris Cutcliffe said he talked with his team a lot about goals last week. There are other long term goals like winning a district championship or a state championship, but short term goals were the ones discussed and one of them was winning last week and getting over .500.

“We said at the end of this week, we can have a winning record overall and in our district and let's really take pride in that and do what we can to make that happen,” Cutcliffe said. “I think they were proud of that at the end

of the night, to get to a winning record and head into New Hope.”

In the win over Lewisburg, Oxford scored on its first four drives on offense while quarterback John Reece McClure was very efficient as he accounted for five touchdowns.

“We did a lot of things well on both sides of the ball. I thought we were efficient on offense and I thought we ran

the ball well, which was good to see and I thought John Reece's decision making was outstanding,” Cutcliffe said.

“We did give up a touchdown on special teams.

There was a 20 or 30 mileper-hour wind a lot of the night and I think it affected things. I can certainly think of one incompletion where the wind just completely affected the ball. I think it affected the drop on the snap of the punt as well.”

Cutcliffe felt like his defense hit a bit of a lull in the first half against Lewisburg, but he loved how the team refocused during intermission and how much intensity they came back out with in the second half on defense.

“At halftime, it was a 15point game. We gave up two late scores to them in the first half. One off of a fumble on offense, we gave them great

ented and well coached. I think they do things that will give you problems.”

New Hope is averaging almost 300 yards through the air, while Stevens has passed for 1,726 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Trojans lost a shootout, 49-34, to Lake Cormorant last week. Their lone 1-5A win came over Center Hill, 55-27. With the exception of the 42-13 loss to Clarksdale, New Hope has scored at least 27 points in every game.

“They really have played well offensively. We really have to great defense,” Cutcliffe said.

New Hope is a 4-3 defense and they have big, physical players on the line that do a good job of keeping blockers off the linebackers, Cutcliffe said. Linebacker Kyree Fields is a linebacker who stood out to Cutcliffe during film study.

“He's really talented and

field position and then dropping the ball on the punt to give up a touchdown,” Cutcliffe said. “I was very pleased with how we refocused and how we came back out in the second half and played very well to put the game away.”

New Hope is a talented team, Cutcliffe said, and a program that always seems to pester the Chargers even in losses.

“Offensively, their senior quarterback (Thomas Stevens) is playing really well. They have four or five receivers that are 6-2, 6-3 and one that is 6-5 and they're good playmakers.

The offensive line is doing a good job,” Cutcliffe said.

“Defensively they have some linemen that have been outstanding and some good secondary play. I think they're a team that is very, very dangerous and very tal-

plays really hard and I think they have some guys in the secondary that make plays for them,” Cutcliffe said.

“The other thing they do is tackle really well. That's one thing that stood out to us is that they're a very good tackling team, which is a sign of being well coached.”

Oxford defeated New Hope 46-12 last season and the Trojans finished the year 3-8, which means they are already improved from 2015.

One thing that Cutcliffe would like to see his team eliminate coming out of Lewisburg was losing three fumbles.

Smith said that Shuler has a great relationship with Kennedy and Bill Armstrong, his direct recruiter to Ole Miss. Armstrong has visited the campus three times, and Kennedy came twice on those visits.

“I know he likes Ole Miss because he's been down there and went down one time this summer with his sister before he came up for school in the fall,” Smith said.

“He was real excited about his official visit. I think he feels comfortable there. He's kind of quiet and he doesn't change his expression much on the floor. He's got a smile on his face all the time. He's always positive and he picks his teammates up. I've never seen him not bring it in practice and where he wasn't in a good mood.

he is an assest for LHS baseball coach Greg Lewis. This past spring and summer were important for Woods, who really showed his ability in the outfield, and at the plate. And the thing that Lewis is most proud about was how well Woods did in school.

“What an opportunity they have, making the grades they're supposed to and then have the ability to do the things that they need to step on to the next level,” said Lewis, who also coaches Tyler Williams, another member of the 2016 Elite 8 class, in baseball. “It's a big tribute to them to do the things they need to, on and off the field and court. I think Dillon is going to get out there and do the things that we need. He has improved and he is such a hard worker. The last part of the spring, he just kept getting better in the outfield and hitting wise.

You could see it starting to click. I know he's going to come back out and work hard after football.”

As impressive as Woods is in athletics, he is just as impressive in the classroom. He holds a grade point average of 4.26, so gaining admission into college won't be a problem. Woods said it's tough to do multiple sports

and sports at the same time.

“You're always practicing a lot and taking time out of your day, but you have bear down,” Woods said about how he keeps his balance between school and athletics. “It's about time management and your smarts. Sometimes you don't have to do all the work.”

Advanced placement calculus is the most difficult class for Woods, he said. When Woods has told others that he takes such high level classes and a GPA of 4.2, there have been some that don't believe him.

“They do all the time. Just being an athlete, it's hard. They just think we don't have enough time to do all that stuff,” said Woods, who added that government or Spanish II were the two classes that were the easiest for him.

Fair said that a player can be really smart in the classroom, but not as much so on the field.

That's not the case in regards to Woods.

“They have that carry over and it's nice to have those guys on the team when they can do that,” Fair said.

Woods has seven catches for 100 yards and a touchdown so far this season. He also has 42 tackles through seven games, with five going for a loss.

“We made a run because we decided to and we became aggressive again and it was because of our seniors in the huddle,” Jordan said. “I kind of challenged them to lead us in that direction and they did it. They've answered every call and challenge I have given them. I'm impressed with the girls.

“And I'm the kind of coach where it isn't always fun to come to practice. I'm a grinder,” Jordan added. “Nick Saban says it's a process and I don't disagree with that.

I find joy in grinding out everyday and that can wear on kids. Those three seniors have been able to keep it light in practice and to keep us going forward while I'm pushing us and pulling us to get us where we need to be.”

While the Lady Commodores have overachieved with how they have played from a record standpoint, there is a new normal set now.

“Our goal is still to win division. We need help, but in the last week of the season, we were still in a position to do that,” Jordan said. “While that was the goal, only those three seniors, and I, actually believed we could eventually achieve that. Outside people kept telling us or asking us how we were going to feel if we didn't make the playoffs.

They didn't consider that. I didn't consider that when we came to work everyday. We made sure that didn't happen.”

“They all play in that first set,” Ross said.

“Ragan, Maggee and Summer have been on the floor every time we start and then Jas, Jessica and Haley are all in there. It all depends on where the rotation starts.”

Each of the seniors has an important role to fill, Ross said, who was able to point out the strengths of them all.

“Ragan's job in the back row is to be the defensive captain and the Libero is the best passer in theory and her job is to run things back there,” Ross said. “Summer, she is a great left back. She is a great talker and she was unanimously chosen as captain of this team. She is just a great spirit and she talks
