Welcome to Pontotoc Where Family Comes First

W Ellen Russell

Pontotoc County Chamber/ Main Street Director

e are Pontotoc, Mississippi. Nestled in the hills of North Mississippi, this “Land of the Hanging Grapes” as it was called, is known for our lush surroundings. From the Chickasaw who named this place to the early pioneers who settled our quaint county square, Pontotoc is a place where historically, people are connected to one another and to the rich land which abounds. Our community is a family who comes together to worship, to learn, and to celebrate. From the church pews to the halls of our schools, we are raising children who are taught to serve and excel. From

the sportsmanship they have learned on our fields to the integrity that has been instilled in the classroom, our graduates can go anywhere and do anything. But because of our industrious future, they can now choose to come home and start their family surrounded by family. The City of Pontotoc, the county seat, is located in the center of Pontotoc County. Quaint shops and eateries dot the downtown area with plenty of Antique Shops to capture your interest. People walking or jogging with their dogs in tow are safe and secure on the sidewalks or trails in Pontotoc. A history buff will have fun at the Town Square Museum

or visiting the history room at the County Library on Main Street. Tennis court and ball fields offer plenty of exercise time for all ages. Tanglefoot Trail is part of the recreational trail that runs from Houston, Mississippi to New Albany, Mississippi. Walkers, joggers, bikers, and hikers have 44 miles of scenery that once could only be seen from a train. We invite you to Pontotoc Mississippi. The birthplace of the American family, where family comes first and we love every second.

Welcome to Pontotoc . . .

Pontotoc’s manufacturing continues to thrive

P

Story By: Regina

ontotoc County’s newest industrial developer has been on the ground in Pontotoc for the past 10 months and already he sees the challenges and why the furniture industry is thriving in Pontotoc County. In fact Pontotoc’s percentage of manufacturing jobs per capita is the highest in Mississippi and the fifth highest in the Untied States. Gary Chandler said he works with Rebecca Brantley and Casey Franks to coordinate grants “and we work closely with the manufactures to create jobs. It means a lot to be able to help them through the process and get people working here.” Chandler said that Pontotoc’s secret to furniture’s hold here is the fact that it is generational. “Pontotoc has a decades old history in manufacturing that translates to generations of families, grandparent, parent or an uncle or aunt who works in a plant. People are likely to gravitate to that if they have family members there.” Chandler said another plus for manufacturing in Pontotoc has been the local governments. “They have done a good job of cultivating manufacturing by making it a business friendly atmosphere which has allowed manufacturing to thrive and grow.” One of the greatest challenges is also a plus for Pontotoc and that is the fact that unemployment is low, which means there is no extra work force. Another challenge is no marketable building space. “All of the buildings that are marketable have bene taken. I get calls at least every week from manufacturers wanting buildings and all of ours are full.” In getting the work force here Chandler said that education is the key. “We are having to cultivate a new generation that sees a need for working in the manufacturing industry,” he noted. “That means not just going to the high school students but those who are in the upper junior high and show them the benefits of it.” 4

Gary Chandler

Pontotoc-Union-Chickasaw-Itawamba Industrial Developer Chandler said that manufacturing today is much different than the plant of the 1970s. “They are cleaner and safer. You need a new skill set and have to know problem solving and you will see a better made product,” he said. One of his challenges is marketing the site that Pontotoc county has had for some nine to ten years just off of the Cherry Creek Road. “One of our next steps that we are going to work hard with is marketing this industrial park,” Chandler said. “We are working with a partner to see how it

can be used to employ people within the county and beyond.” On that note he said that people don’t mind driving a far piece for a good job. “We employ people from Chickasaw and Calhoun and Lee counties. People will drive 30 to 45 minutes for jobs that pay a decent wage, it is not the barrier that it was years ago. It is allowing people in the broader region to come here and work and spend their monies here.” And he remains optimistic about the opportunities in Pontotoc. “In five years I see us thriving and growing even more than we are now,” he said.

Ashley Employees Over

26,000 WORLDWIDE 6

A

shley began manufacturing occasional tables in 1974 at a plant in Arcadia, Wisconsin, with only 35 employees. In the early 1980s, Ron Wanek was challenged by imported occasional tables that were selling for less than his products and was forced to transform the business. This meant going overseas to Asia and building a blended strategy where component parts for our furniture could be made in Asia and shipped over. This was also the start of Ashley manufacturing bedroom furniture. In 1994, Ashley entered the Upholstery market, purchasing the Ecru, MS facility and three years later the first Ashley HomeStore opened in Anchorage, Alaska. This was a turning point for Ashley as we were now able to sell our own products, manage our own supply chain and hear direct feedback from our customers. In the early 2000s, Ashley HomeStore opened its first international store in Japan and began manufacturing mattresses. In 2015, as the retail industry continued to change rapidly to online shopping and the ‘Amazon Effect,’ we launched our Ashley HomeStore ecommerce website for customers to have the ability to choose the way they shop. Today, Ashley has over 17,000,000 square feet of Manufacturing and Distribuiton capacity, over 780 Ashley HomeStores, and more than 26,000 employees worldwide. In 1993/1994, upholstery furniture was starting to enter the marketplace. At the time, Ashley was evolving as a company, and was becoming more of a home goods manufacturer and wanted to enter this up-and-coming product segment. Ashley began making sample upholstered products Pontotoc Manufacturing 2018

with a company overseas and brought them to the San Francisco market. However, that company didn’t have the ability to produce what Ashley needed. Determining that is was time to get into the upholstery manufacturing business, Ron and Todd Wanek found the perfect upholstery factory in Ecru, Mississippi and brought it into the Ashley family in 1994. The Ecru plant, originally 129,180 sq. ft., is currently 46 acres under roof with nearly 2,000,000 sq. ft. – making this facility the World’s Largest Upholstery Plant. The facility manufactures Stationary Upholstery products and houses Ashley’s South Regional Distribution Center. The products produced in this plant service the western half of the country. Ashley also has a plant in Ripley, Mississippi that manufactures Motion Upholstery and a Bedding plant in Verona, Mississippi that produces mattresses. When the Waneks decided to purchase a manufacturing plant and get into the Upholstery market, the state of Mis8

sissippi was top of mind. This was the place to be for furniture manufacturing. The state of Mississippi and local city officials demonstrated an opportunity for Ashley to plant roots in the Southern part of the country. Through touring the facility grounds and local communities, this location proved to be very business friendly and a great place to develop a world-class workforce. The rich regional history

| Pontotoc Manufacturing 2018

and a skilled workforce with good attitudes and hard work ethics in this part of the state was a major factor in the decision to build what is today, the World’s Largest Upholstery Manufacturing Plant. Ashley employs approximately 3,700 people in the Ecru, Ripley, Verona and Satillo, Mississippi facilities. Ashley’s Ecru manufacturing and distribution facility offers career opportunities in the following areas:

• Manufacturing/Assembly • Quality • Design & Engineering • Human Resources • Training • Safety • Purchasing/ Supply Chain Planning • Information Technology • Maintenance • Automation • Transportation • Distribution Center • Finance • International Operations.

Over the last 10 to 20 years, the furniture industry has evolved from a local supply chain to a global supply chain. To be successful in the furniture industry, we must embrace a global materials and manufacturing supply chain and develop a blended strategy of globally sourced components and materials and mix these with U.S. manufacturing. Ashley is a company with incredible perseverance and they have been doing business in Asia and other parts of the world since the 1980s, including factories in Taiwan, Brazil and currently have large facilities in China and Vietnam. Ashley has also developed a strong retail presence internationally, opening hundreds of stores in China and other countries around the globe. Ashley Furniture has more that 17,000,000 sq. ft. (400 acres under roof) of manufacturing and distribution capacity to furnish homes across the globe. Ashley has eight manufacturing facilities in the United States - Wisconsin (3), Mississippi (3), Pennsylvania and North Carolina as well as three manufacturing facilities in Vietnam. Ashley HomeStore is the number one furniture retailer in the U.S. and one of the world’s best-selling furniture store brands with more than 780 locations in 43 countries. In addition to Ashley’s brick and mortar stores, customers are also able to shop online at www.ashleyhomestore.com. Our retail headquarters is based in Tampa (Ybor City), Florida and offers careers in marketing, sales, information technology, merchandising, eCommerce and more. Ashley Furniture formed Ashley Distribution Services in 1974 and today is the only furniture company that is capable of delivering throughout the U.S. in two days or less. With over 800 tractors and

more than 3,500 trailers, our fleet travels over 60 million miles each year, delivering over 30 million pieces of furniture to homes. Ashley Distribution Services employs roughly 1,200, comprised of drivers, maintenance, and office support. In addition, Ashley handles

in excess of 90,000 containers per year that are shipped around the world. Ashley Furniture offers a wide variety of careers across the globe. We hire for attitude and train for skill and are committed to reinvesting in our company, especially our employees.

Ashley offers leadership and on-the-job training as well as growth opportunities. Ashley employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that provides employees and their family access to world-class healthcare options – even onsite clinics for our Wisconsin and Mississippi employees that only requires a $10 copay for services. Ashley has a long-term view on the development of our company; we do not make investments for the short term, we make investments for the long term. Over the last four years, Ashley has invested $1 billion into their operations, people and technology. Throughout the years, Ashley and the Wanek family have made momentous contributions to improving education, advancing medical research and providing for children in need. Some of the key initiatives the company focuses on include: Ashley for the Arts: in 2017 this music and art festival raised over $425,000 to benefit more than 40 non-profit organizations – which includes 23 school districts. Hope to Dream: has provided over 50,000 mattress sets to underprivileged children since 2010. Ashley’s Angels: has provided food, clothing, and toys during the holiday season to over 20,000 children in need since 1997. Educational Outreach: has invested millions of dollars in areas to support the arts, STEM and Robotic programs and training, and post-secondary scholarships for children. Medical Research: has donated tens of millions of dollars toward medical research organizations, including City of Hope, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, American Heart Association, Mayo Clinic and more.

PONTOTOC DIECUTTING has been in business since 1994 and is owned and operated by Ken Pruett and Tami Lorick. In 2004, Pontotoc Diecutting moved to the Industrial Park to expand it’s press capacity to better serve the needs of the furniture manufactures. Currently having more press capacity dedicated to the Furniture industry than any converter in North Mississippi and the only converter of heavy diecut cardboard in the region. Along with customizing cardboard to meet their customers styles, they also add poly and nails to their cardboard. This eliminates one step of the assembly process for the furniture manufacturer. Pontotoc Diecutting is expecting to expand their business by 50% by using technology in their machinery to be able to supply the most cutting edge products to the furniture industry. Not only do they cut cardboard and diecut panels and leg Shims, they also have a division dedicated to supplying corrugated rolls and other paper product to assist in shipping and packaging furniture. Mr. Pruett said he is very excited about the upcoming year for the furniture industry and is looking forward to helping the furniture industry meet their cardboard needs. Mr. Pruett is very dedicated to the furniture industry. activity working in community and industrial programs. SUPPORTING THOSE WHO SUPPORT US! 12

Family Tradition

Mike Brazil says quality, caring and craftsmanship are the keys to his success

T

he story starts and ends with quality. Mike Brazil’s furniture operation, on the west side of Pontotoc is relatively small, compared to the big boys in the industry. On any given day, fewer than 30 people are cutting, measuring, sewing, and stapling the unique pieces that customers request from all over North America and beyond. 14

Story By: Galen

Holley, Pontotoc Progress

Some want sofas embellished with embossed leather, the hide skillfully crafted to resemble the divot-and-smooth, cowboy boot-texture of ostrich skin. Others want the Spanish-style cross and fiery swirls of the Loredo design, colored, like an Old West photograph, in nostalgic sepia. Still, others want the coarse-hair feeling of brindle-and-cream-colored cowhide on their furniture.

| Pontotoc Manufacturing 2018

Brazil’s experienced, tightly knit team of craftspeople do not crank out truckloads of bland, adequate furnishings. They mold centerpieces, keepsakes that satisfy proud homeowners. Like kinfolks coming for supper, Brazil’s pieces bring generations of artisanship and pride into a home. It is a legacy his parents passed on to him, Brazil said. “My daddy always said that

if we kept the quality, we’d find a place in the industry,” said Brazil, speaking of his father, Derlie, one of the pioneers of the Action Lane brand, who helped him get started in 1987. “My mother, Mary Ellen, ran my first sewing department,” said Brazil. “We started making one recliner a day, and she’d sew the whole piece of furniture.” The “lodge look” is how

Brazil describes his pieces, with furniture covered in a variety of textiles, embossed with images of bears and ducks, a look right at home in a log cabin, he said. “It’s part of what makes us special,” said Brazil. That roughhewn, country style of today’s line has evolved over the years. A glance at an online catalogue shows a recliner, its supple leather riveted with brass under its broad arms, across its back, a scene of wild stallions galloping across a sun-washed Western valley. A mother bear and her cub stand on the edge of a forest clearing on a set that includes a leather chair and Ottoman, along with a sofa. Drum beats seem to thump from a third set, sewn in a repeated pattern, like a Native American headband, of crenellated, end-to-end triangles, framed by arrowheads, bearing the strong name “Apache Stone.” Brazil’s hi-leg chairs, recliners, motion sofas, loveseats, office chairs, sectionals, and stationary furniture are crafted with a rugged, character that makes his 35,000-square-foot factory-- tiny by industry standards--look somewhat like a prop department on the set of a Clint Eastwood movie. Brazil has displayed his furniture at high-profile shows across the country, including the big markets in High Point, North Carolina, as well as in Minneapolis and Atlanta. Today, the company has earned enough of a solid reputation that Brazil need not take his products on the road, like in the old days, although Tupelo’s furniture market remains an important, and much closer, venue for him, he said. He is particularly excited about some of his items, Brazil said, like children’s recliners and tween furniture, bright, cheery pieces, with whimsical name patterns, like “Whale Tales Coral,” “Sports Storm,” Pontotoc Manufacturing 2018

| 15

and “Polka Dot Candy Pink.” “It’s kind of like holding back the reigns on a horse,” said Brazil, describing how he and his employees balance the steady demand for their products with the time needed to craft a unique piece of furniture. In much the same way he does his family, Bra16

zil credits those employees, many of whom came to him after decades of working in the industry, with creating an environment that produces special things. One of those employees, who passed away recently, Evelyn Baker, is remembered in a framed photograph. Baker’s picture is among the first

| Pontotoc Manufacturing 2018

things one notices when walking into the front office. “I’ve got a number of people that have worked for me for many years, that are so instrumental in my success,” said Brazil. “We’re sort of old school around here. Our people are proud of what they do. My mother and daddy raised

me right, I believe, to work hard and do things right, and, with all these good people working here, we make a piece of furniture that somebody can truly enjoy.” The remarkable work of Brazil and his staff can viewed online at www.brazilfurnitureusa.com
