The Pontotoc Warriors baseball program graduated eight seniors last season and will rely on some young and inexperienced players in 2021. The Warriors return two seniors and their entire pitching staff and that will bode well. “We are very young and we tell them it’s your time to shine. We need some guys to step up, and they are taking that very seriously,” said head coach Josh Dowdy. “Seeing what those seniors went through last year has our guys a lot more focused because they now know, with everything that is happening, that we aren’t promised tomorrow.” Seniors Tucker Campbell and Eli Harlow have settled into their roles this season and are ready to show that it’s their time to lead. ”Tucker will play third and some second base for us,” said coach Dowdy. “Eli is our catcher, and they are both hungry guys who are ready to play and prove something.” Pontotoc returns junior Brice Deaton on the bump. He will be the ace of the Warriors staff and will be the teams’ workhorse on the mound and in the lineup. “We look at him as our leader of-
fensively and on the mound, and we expect a lot out of him,” Dowdy said. Pontotoc will utilize sophomore Jon Robert Carnes on the mound and in the field this season. “We knew he had the potential at the plate, and he was stuck behind some upperclassmen. Now he will get some experience and good things should happen for him,” said coach Dowdy. “Ty Clayton (Junior) moved in the district this year, and he will pitch for us, hit leadoff and play centerfield.”
PONTOTOC
WARRIORS WILL BE YOUNG BUT TALENTED
Other important contributors will be Walt Gardner, Jabari Farr and Hayden Kyle, among others. The Warriors’ motto is it doesn’t matter what grade you are in someone, has to step up. Pontotoc will field the best hitters available regardless, and it should not be surprising if some power develops with more players gaining experience. “We have a good core of guys and we are just trying to mix it up,” said coach Dowdy. “We will find the nine best hitters and that is who will play.”

The South Pontotoc Cougars are looking to make their presence felt in Class 4A after their first season in the higher classification was cut short last year. The Cougars will field what looks to be a formidable ball club, as they have gotten off to fast start during early action. “We have played some pretty good ball, but it is early in the season,” said South head coach Jeff Harmon. “We have some young guys who didn’t get that year last year who are still trying to figure some stuff out.” The Cougars have six seniors who will be a big part of the team’s success. Channing Lackey will provide a key cog in the lineup and man first base. He has developed into a very dangerous left-handed bat with good power. Right-hander Jackson Cook, an East Mississippi Community College signee, will be one of the anchors of the pitching staff. Chris Fleming returns in centerfield, and a Eli Allen will play in right field. “Channing barrels a lot of balls up for us,” coach Harmon said. “He is a gap to gap kind of guy, and I am hoping he drives in a lot of runs this year.
We need to get Eli (Allen) and Chris (Fleming) on for him with their speed.” Henley McNatt will see time at catcher, and McKinley Johnson is a utility player who can play several different positions. “He (Johnson) is playing well and has probably been one of the biggest surprises for us early on,” Harmon said. “I am pretty excited about our senior class.” Sophomore Hunter Bagwell has been starting since the eighth grade and will be crucial on the mound, in the field and at the plate, where he hit .438 as an eighth grader and .500 in last year’s brief campaign. “Hunter is one of the guys we are going to have to rely on,” coach Harmon said. “He will be our shortstop when he is not on the bump. We just need him to keep doing he has been
doing.” Other key infielders will be junior Ashton Goggins at the hot corner and sophomore Hayes Gregory at second. “We made some changes with Goggins’ swing, and he is swinging to a lot more contact now than he was,” Harmon said. “He had a really good offseason this year and plays a really good third base. “Hayes does a good job of fielding what is hit to him and making the routine plays. He is a real consistent second baseman.” Sophomore Jackson Rodgers has won a starting job in left field, and he looks to make an significant impact in the lineup and on the mound. “He had a great offseason in the weight room and has developed into a really good player,” Harmon said. Junior Chase Long is set to start at catcher. “We will pitch by committee with (Jackson) Cook, (Jackson) Rodgers, (Hunter) Bagwell, Eli Allen, McKinley (Johnson) and Channing (Lackey) will have to throw too,” Harmon said. “We will have to mix Chris (Fleming) in there some, as well as maybe some sophomores like Trace Ash and Ashton Matthews.” “We don’t have any superstars, we are just trying to build a team.”

North Pontotoc will have some new names in the lineup this season. The Vikings aren’t young, but they are inexperienced, as they missed time they needed to develop last year when the season was cancelled. That has head coach Chad Anthony excited to see who will emerge. “We are still looking at some new faces to fill holes, and I’m excited to see who they are,” said coach Anthony. “They missed time they needed last year to grow, and we are going to mix some lineups for a while and see who can and can’t get it done.” Seniors Ty Roberson, Bo Howell, and Kaden Wilson will lead the Vikings this season. All three were starters on North’s 3A state championship team in 2019. “They have done some big things for us through the years, and I look for them to continue to lead our program,” said coach Anthony. Roberson will pitch and play centerfield. Howell will catch, pitch and play some third base, with Wilson playing shortstop and pitching as well. Sophomore Reece Kentner will pitch for the Vikings as well. “Reece got off to a good start last year and we expect big things from him again,” said coach Anthony. There are a number players who will
contribute in various ways, including Cayson Capwell, Jaylen Wise, Kalor Kirby, Michael Anderson, Bryce Reeder, Drake Steele and Colten Moore, among others. The Vikings have always scheduled and played stiff completion while in 3A so not getting to play a lot of games in 4A last year, their first season in that

classification in a decade, shouldn’t keep them from competing in Division 1-4A and making the playoffs in 2021. “I like this group a lot, and we are really looking forward to playing this season,” said coach Anthony. “This group works hard for us, has a great attitude, and I’m excited and ready to see how far they can take us.”

The Pontotoc softball program graduated four seniors from a year ago and will be led by a solid core of upperclassmen and a sophomore class that has plenty of experience. The Lady Warriors return all three starters in the circle as well, and that has head coach Michael Wildmon excited about this spring. “I’m just glad to be back out there playing games,” said coach Wildmon. “I think our division is as tough as it always is, and I think we have a lot of positional flexibility that will allow us to mix things up and field a good team no matter who it pitching.” Junior Kinsey Cayson will lead the Lady Warriors’ pitching staff this year. She led the Lady Warriors in strikeouts last season. Sophomore Addison Owen and freshman Avery Bridgman will get starts in the circle as well. Senior Sky Vaughn returns to the diamond for the Lady Warriors in 2021 and will play a utility role. Junior Allie Beckley will return to her familiar role as the team’s leadoff hitter and starting shortstop. “Allie is a four-year starter and we expect big things out of her,” said
coach Wildmon. “Sky will catch some for us and can play a lot of different positions if we need her to.” Sophomore Jaycie Walker will also man the backstop where she primarily played last season. Also returning are sophomores Sadie Stegall, Ella Hill and Joryie McKnight. “Ella has shown a lot of improvement at the plate,” said coach Wildmon. “Sadie takes really good swings, and Joryie has had tremendous growth since last season. From what I have

seen so far I am really excited about the rest of our girls as well,” said coach Wildmon. The expectations for this season are the same as always for Pontotoc, and that is to win the division, North Half and have a shot at a state championship. “I think once we get everyone out and get going we will be able meet those expectations,” said coach Wildmon. “I’m excited to see how good we really can be.”

Five returning seniors will anchor an experienced South Pontotoc Lady Cougars team eager to keep their string of consistency going after missing most of last season due to the effects of COVID-19. In 2019, while still in Class 3A, South won the program’s state championship. Ace pitcher Allyson Harrison, an ICC signee, will deal from the circle. Harrison is one of the top pitchers in the state and should give the Lady Cougars a chance in most games. In her last full season of action two years ago she recorded a 0.97 ERA and a whopping 198 strikeouts. Harrison will be backed up defensively by fellow seniors Secora Weeks at shortstop- a Holmes Community College signee- and infielder Lydia Garrison, along with Koryn Mathews and Taylor Kidd in the outfield. All are expected to provide leadership in what coach Adam Patterson expects will be a robust 2021 campaign. “We will definitely be looking to them for leadership in practices and in games,” said Patterson. “They have been working hard and have had good
attitudes since the beginning of the school year.” Others players to watch include junior Rebekah Pilcher at catcher, a long-time key contributor who was chosen to the MAC Rising Stars AllStar Game last year, as well as Sydney Brazil and Maddie Holcomb. Other vying for roles are Brylee Vandiver, Hailey Rackley, Kilynn Carlisle and Arlee McClellan, among others. “I’m looking forward to seeing who can step up,” coach Patterson said. Stiff competition for outfield spots is making all the Lady Cougars sharper. Several young pitchers are showing
good progress, Patterson said, including Carlee Dunlap, Mikayla McGregor, Mary Hays, Brooke McCord, and Annistan Wiggins. Carlisle has been hitting the ball well early in the season, as has Dunlap and McGregor and several others, Patterson said. “We will continue improving and hopefully we will be playing good softball when division games roll around,” said Patterson. “As the season progresses we will continue to get better, and hopefully we will continue to practice well. All in all, we are excited to be back on the field, and this has been a fun team to be a part of.”

The North Pontotoc Lady Vikings have a talented and veteran core returning, and that should bode well for them for 2021. “I have a large group of seniors as well as juniors, and I expect a lot out of them,” head coach Cee Cee Cavenaugh said. The Lady Vikings will look to senior twin sisters Tiffany and Tayler Bishop to anchor their pitching. “They both throw the ball well,” Cavenaugh said. “They are stepping into some big shoes, but they both have pitched some big roles for us in games in the past, and I think they are going to do well for us in the circle.” Transfer Katherine Smith will also see time in the circle. Tiffany Bishop will be playing in the outfield when she is not pitching, while Tayler Bishop will be at shortstop. “Tayler has had to make a transition to the infield, which she hasn’t played before, but she has done well at that,” Cavenaugh said. Senior Haisley Coker and junior Abby Waldron will also play big roles in the outfield.
“We are running three different pitchers so we pretty much run three different defensive lineups and interchange people at different positions, but they are doing good at adjusting to that,” Cavenaugh said. Junior Brooke McBrayer, senior Macey Thomas, Smith, and eighth grader Emma Burk will play roles in the infield, as well as first senior baseman Anna Grace Coomer. Lexie Walker returns behind the plate. Cavenaugh and the Lady Vikings are looking forward to competing in
4A after last season was cut short. “I think 4A is a tough classification in fastpitch softball with some really great teams,” Cavenaugh said. “I think for us to be successful we are going to have to have some our seniors step up and be leaders on the field. We need to have everything clicking offensively. I think our defense will come the more we are on the field, but our offense has got to click together, work together and feed off of each other. When we play like we can and should I think we will be a hard team to beat.”

Pontotoc Progress
The tradition-rich Pontotoc High School Track and Field program should again display its mettle this spring with two teams that are positioned to compete for championships all the way through the end of the season. “I think we are putting together two solid, competitive teams this spring,” said PHS head coach Brian Morgan. “It seems weird saying ‘experienced’ given we didn’t have a season last year, but in reality we do have experience returning thanks in large part to our Junior High programs and having nine seniors on the boys squad.” Logan Moore was top 3 vaulter in the state two years ago, and he will be vying for the top spot this season. Moore has also progressed in the sprints and will contribute in the 200 meter and 400 meter. Tyshawn Loftis returns as a top sprinter and will start relays due to his experience and speed. Senior Freddy Porter had an outstanding cross country season and will earn points in the distance races, along with junior standout Cooper Parmer. “Both of these guys have the potential to be state meet scorers in the mile and 800,” coach Morgan said. There is also a productive group of seniors competing in the throwing events- Colton Hillhouse, Cameron Chunn, Jonah Mahan, and Kade Stegall. “These guys have competed for
several years now,” Morgan said. “They have all made great improvements and all have the capability of being very competitive this year.” Mahan will also compete in the hurdles. “He is a versatile athlete that can do several things well,” Morgan said. Marty Reel and Lemerio Miller round out the senior group, with Reel competing in long jump and relays. Miller is training to be a hurdler in his first year of track. “These guys will lead a very athletic team, and we are anxious to see them compete with that relentless Warrior effort,” coach Morgan said. Makayla Boyd will lead the girls squad in her senior campaign. “She (Boyd) is a top hurdler and triple jumper, and she is another versatile athlete that can contribute in several events,” Morgan said. Karol Arias is the Lady Warriors’ other senior. She is a first-year runner, but coach Morgan says she has progressed at a better than average pace
PONTOTOC

and will compete in the distance races. Juniors Kaylin Simmons and Riley Stanford both made the state finals in their events in 2019- Simmons in the middle distance races and Stanford in the throws. Sophomore Jessica Woods is the reigning 100 meter state champion. The Lady Warriors will look for her to compete in the 100 and 200, as well as anchor the sprint relays. There is also a talented group of freshmen back with experience at the state meet- Ava Robbins, Jakila Feagin, and Alayna Ball. “All 3 have potential to be top finishers in their events,” coach Morgan said. “We have a good blend of sprinters, distance, and field event competitors on our girls team,” Morgan said. “Just like the guys, our goal is a state championship. This should be a fun season for Pontotoc Track. We host six meets this year, so there is ample opportunity to come see some really good kids compete for our program.”

Pontotoc tennis has been focusing on getting better and more consistent this spring. Head coach Kevin Morrow is looking for his charges to improve, and he is excited to see how good they can be this season. “We will compete, and we are working on the things we need to work on to get better, as well as playing smart,” said coach Morrow. “I have been moving a lot of them around so far to see who will play where, and I think it will take a team effort across the board for us to be successful.” Senior Blayze Haynes returns to lead the boys team. He has played since seventh grade and competed in the state tournament in 2019. “He is going to be our anchor,” said Morrow. Junior Joseph Henry will play singles and doubles for Pontotoc this season. Henry was a 2019 state qualifier. Juniors Caroline Howard and Holly Stewart, who have both played at the state tournament, return for the girls team, as does sophomore Heather Tedford. “Heather is our most consistent doubles player, and both Caroline and Holly have experience and we will expect a lot out of them,” Morrow said. Pontotoc currently has a streak of eight straight division championships,
the last coming in 2019 after last season was cut short due to COVID-19, and the Warriors should be in the mix to continue that in 2021. Pontotoc appears to have talent at the top of their team wit veteran players returning in singles and doubles who have competed well in 4A. Winning does make everything better,

but as most who have played or are around prep sports know it’s not thing only thing that matters. “Most of all I want their experience to be positive, because most of them will play tennis for their whole life whether they are competing or not,” said coach Morrow. “I just want them to have fun playing tennis.”

The South Pontotoc Cougars are looking forward to getting in the mix in Class 4A tennis after years as one of best 3A programs in North Mississippi. Last season’s inaugural campaign in 4A was cut short soon after it began due to COVID-19. “I think we can compete and we have the ability to have a very successful year,” said longtime South Pontotoc head coach Helen Bowen. The Cougars will be led by a strong group of five senior boys- ICC signee Sam Morgan, Isaac Finley, Stroud Mills, Matthew Butts and Richie Lilly. “We are stacked on the boys side, and that’s a huge plus for us,” Bowen said. “They’ve all been together since they were seventh graders, and they are all versatile players.” Morgan will compete at the boys single slot and Nikki Raines at girls singles. Isaac Finley and Stroud Mills will team up at boys doubles, as well as Richie Lilly and Colton Fuqua. All of those slots remain the same as last season, and this will be Lilly and Fuqua’s third year to play together. Morgan, Finley, Mills, Lilly and Fuqua all have state tournament experience. Raines was a first-year starter in 2020’s pandemic-shortened season. Maggie Franks, the lone senior on the girls side, and Leah Long will start
at one girls doubles court, while Jada Washington and Mikea New will be on the another. Matthew Butts and Caitlyn Ard will team at mixed doubles, another carryover duo from last year’s lineup that coach Bowen expects to have a big year. South will look to compete for the division title, which Bowen thinks

they have a very good chance at, and see how far they can go in the playoffs. Of course they will look to get as many players into the state tournament as possible. “As always we have some great kids,” coach Bowen said. “We have to keep working to get better, but I am excited to see how good we can be.”

North Pontotoc, like most tennis teams in 4A this spring, will be likely once again be chasing powerhouse New Albany, which also happens to reside in the Vikings’ division. However, head coach Jeremy Lytal likes the potential of this year’s squad and expects them to have a solid year. “I have been looking forward to this season more than any in the past, basically because we got off to such a good start last year before everything was shut down,” coach Lytal said. “I did lose three important players from last year’s team, but I have some great players returning. I feel like we have a great mix of veterans and young talent. We potentially have a chance to get that number two seed in our division and make the playoffs, and I feel like I have some individual players that have a great shot at reaching the state tournament.” North’s top returning boys are seniors Weston Crouch, Mitch McCord and Ethan Robertson. “Weston Crouch is a player that got into tennis late, but he really fell in love with it and has been doing everything he can to improve as quickly as possible,” Lytal said. “He will be relied on pretty heavily, not only to play well, but also to be a vocal leader and encourager. He has the potential to make a run at the state tournament in singles or mixed doubles. “Mitch McCord also got into tennis late and has worked very hard to
be competitive. He and Weston have been playing a lot of tennis together over the past year, and he has greatly improved. He is a very tall guy with a big serve. If he can gain some consistency, he has a good shot at being a player that reaches the state tournament as well. “Ethan Robertson is the other senior that has improved so much. He has been a part of the tennis team for a while and has had the opportunity to play several roles in the past. He is an unorthodox player with a great attitude. He is a great motivational leader for our team, and I look forward to seeing what this season is like for him.” The Vikings will also look to young players for contributions and development for the future, especially Christian Najera, Jalil Jimenez, and Adrian Vega. The girls side will be anchored by two very experienced and productive veterans in Kailyn Lott and Lizzy White. “Kailyn has played a lot of tennis and has been around since I took over
the program,” coach Lytal said. “She has improved every single year and played many different roles. She will be one of my most relied on players to play well everytime she steps on the court, and she has the ability to do that. She is certainly a leader, if not the leader on this team. Kailyn will be the anchor of the mixed doubles team. “Lizzy has played a ton of tennis as well. She has been my singles player for the past two seasons. She is an extremely calm, level headed, and consistent player. I will rely on her heavily to go out and compete at singles again this year. She is a player with the potential to win every match on our schedule. I look forward to seeing how she progresses this season.” Jennifer Watson and Marissa Deadeaux are also returners who are set to each take on much bigger roles. “Both of these girls are talented and have been pushing each other to get better. It will be interesting to see how they play as first-year starters,” Lytal said. Two important additions to this year’s team that Lytal thinks have a lot of potential are Nevaeh Hopkins and Cam Thomas. “I think the key to us having a good season is just having the mindset of getting better every time we hit the court,” coach Lytal said. “If my veterans can be calm and consistent every match, they will carry us to some wins. We have a good mindset heading into the season. They have all set great goals for themselves and this team; we just have to put it all together on the court.”

The Pontotoc boys golf team will be young and lacking in experience, but the Warriors still expect to compete as well as build for the future. “I have three kids returning,” said head coach Zach Gory. “But I really only have one with significant experience. I some kids that haven’t played much golf, not just competitive golf but much golf at all.” Junior Mac Cook is the veteran player on the squad. Sophomore Cayton Corley and 8th grader Austin Brown are returners as well, although most of their first season was cancelled in 2020. The remainder of the roster consists of sophomore Chance Blanchard, 7th grader Max Todd, 8th grader Hadley Corley and junior Chip Holcomb. “We have got a chance to play more this year in the preseason due to some better weather,” Gory said. “You can beat plastic golf balls into a wall all day long, but it is different than hitting on a softer golf course with a real ball and the grain of the grass. We can say our swings look good, but it is all about going and playing. That’s how we are going to get better. “The things I am preaching this year are effort and sustainability. When we work on developing our short game
or putting, the next time we come out and play we need remember and apply that. If we make an adjustment in our swing, the next day when we hit the same shot we need to be able to replicate that. It’s sustaining what we fixed yesterday and then finding something else to build upon. “The good thing is we have no seniors, so our mindset is trying to develop a culture. It’s let’s establish this culture, get better and go into the offseason. Let’s compete throughout the year to build on what we are starting right now. We’ve got some guys with potential and some things to build on,
PONTOTOC

so we are excited about that.” The Pontotoc girls team will be composed of Addison Mask and Alisea Johnson. “This year we are looking to improve on our game,” said Pontotoc girls coach Jonathan Beard. “It’s nice to be able to get back out to the course and let these girls have a good time competing and playing a game that is a lifelong game. We have learned through the past season and not being able to finish it to not take what we have for granted. We love this game and have found the joy in being able to come out and swing a golf club.”

After missing the lion’s share of last season due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the South Pontotoc golf program returns a fair amount of experience for 2021. “I’ve got some experience for sure, but they are having to freshen up on some skills,” said Cougars head coach Cage Mills. “A lot of my kids don’t have the chance to play during the summer, so we have to get the feeling back. We are starting to see that over the first couple of matches that we have played, so we are looking forward to seeing some more improvement as we go on.” South has three junior veterans that will lead the boys team in Cooper Bishop, Landon Bishop and Rylan Roberts. “They have been with me for a while, and am looking for them to take the next step this year,” Mills said. Seniors Mattie Washington and Ella Gaspard return for the girls, and both have showed improvement. “I know they have expressed how nice it is to be able to see the improvement start to take place,” Mills said. Caroline Cook has joined the squad this year and performed well. “This is her first time to play competition golf, and early on she has
shot some of our lowest scores,” Mills said. “It is nice to see someone make an immediate impact. She has a big upside.” Her brother, senior Jackson Cook, also looks to be an impact newcomer for the boys. “He is going straight into the lineup for us, and I think he has a lot of potential as well,” Mills said. The remaining members of the boys team are Tanner Davis and Sam Tutor. “Tanner probably has one of the bet-

ter swings on the team, but that hasn’t translated into scores yet,” Mills said. “So I am trying to get him over that hurdle. Sam plays baseball so I don’t get to see him as much, but I was surprised at how well he played early on. “Overall there is a lot of potential. I don’t have that one guy who is going to be able to carry the team, but we have some good pieces. If we shoot what I know we can shoot, we will hopefully have a chance to make it to state.”

The North Pontotoc golf team likes their potential for the 2021 season with a small but talented group. Junior Jackson Wise will lead the team and should be one of the premier players in the area. “Jackson is one of the best golfers in the state,” said North head coach Chris Parman. “His bad shots are most kids’ good shots. He is very good around the green and putts the ball well. He is not going to get himself in trouble because he hits the ball straight. There are not many high school kids that can shoot anywhere from 5-under to twoover just about any time they play.” Junior Jaylen Wise will also play a big role after rejoining the team. He last played high school golf as an eighth grader. “Jaylen is not far behind Jackson,” Parman said. “He has baseball going on so that takes up a lot of his time, but in our first match he hadn’t swung a club for a long time and only shot a 42. That’s pretty good. They will be able to be the top two finishers in a lot of matches that we play in.” Reid Bennett and Brayden Nowlin round out the squad. “This will really be Reid’s first year playing since last year we weren’t able to do anything, but he is already improving,” Parman said. “I think he
will end up being a pretty good golfer before it is all said and done. “Brayden has played since he was in junior high and is a solid golfer,” Parman said. Nowlin was recovering from an injury at press time. Assuming his return, giving the Vikings enough to score as a team, Parman is excited about the Vikings’ chances to put together a successful year.
NORTH PONTOTOC
VIKINGS LIKE CHANCES FOR SOLID YEAR IN 2021
“With us not getting to play last year I am not sure exactly what everyone else in our division has,” Parman said. “But when you have two kids who can shoot the scores Jackson and Jaylen can, you are going to have a shot to win on a big stage. If we can get Reid’s score down just a little and Brayden can come back healthy, that would be the best chance North’s had to compete at the state championship.”
