Navy veteran sees changes for women in military through years

photo by Thomas Wells By Cristina Carreon Daily Journal TUPELO – U.S. Navy veteran Myra Kimbrough has served in some of the coldest and hottest climates, and has seen progress and opportunities for women in the military over her two-decade career. “I am so proud to have served my country for 20 years, and have seen first-hand the accomplishments and successes of women in the armed forces,” Kimbrough said. “Many hardfought-for doors have opened and so many stepped through to continue to pave the way.” Kimbrough said when she first joined in the early 1980s, it was a different Navy. She said

there were a lot of women in the legalman field, which is the equivalent of a civilian paralegal, when she first joined. Later, when she rejoined in 2008, she said she was surprised women were given – and taking – a more active role in the Navy. “When I came back in 2008, they were putting women on ships straight out of boot camp. That didn’t happen when I was in the first time, so that was one of the biggest differences to me, the ratings that were open to women, it was a pleasant surprise for me because women had more opportunities my second time,” she said. Kimbrough joined the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program in 1981, and later that

year, she went to active duty boot camp at the Recruit Training Command at Naval Air Station Orlando, Florida. “The 10 years on active duty, that was my life because I was on active duty, but when I joined again in 2008, I worked full time at Renasant Bank,” she said. “I had always worked several jobs at a time.” Her job at Renasant Bank, which she started in early 2000, was waiting for her when she returned from a deployment to Africa, due to The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. “But Renasant Bank was wonderful to me when I deployed. I left, and when I came back, I stepped into the same job,” she said. “They even gave

me a raise while I was gone, and as the lady from human resources said, ‘It’s as if you never left.’” Kimbrough’s first duty station was the Naval Air Station in Keflavik, Iceland, where she was assigned to the base legal office and served as a non-designated Seaman but went on to achieve the rating of Legalman after attending Naval Justice School. During her service, Kimbrough has been assigned to other active duty stations which include the legal office on the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, and the Navy Legal Service Office in Millington, Tennessee, which is now called Naval Support Ac-

tivity Mid-South. Her duties have included being a court reporter and transcriber of many courts-martial. And in that role, Kimbrough also provided legal assistance, military justice administrative support and claims administration. “My very first case was a court-martial,” she said, adding that most of her active duty service was spent as a court reporter for courts-martial. She sat in on domestic abuse cases, a child molestation case, and a particularly chilling murder trial: a domestic abuse case in which a sailor who was being physically abused by his wife, murdered her and was caught a week later with her remains in

the trunk of his car. Kimbrough’s active duty service ended in 1991, but she immediately joined the U.S. Navy Reserve at the Navy Operational Support Center in Millington. In 2008, she rejoined the Navy Reserve at Millington where she served in various commands and billets, helping to ensure legal readiness for servicemembers, and assisting in military justice matters. She volunteered for active duty service in 2011 and was deployed to the Horn of Africa to be part of a Combined Joint Task Force in Djibouti, supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom/ Operation Enduring Freedom. She was assigned to the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate and worked in administrative legal support, providing services of wills, powers of attorney, nonjudicial punishment and other military justice matters. “I went from the freezer in Iceland to the furnace in Africa, and many places in between, and the friends, experiences and memories made along the way will always be with me. I know that I am the woman I am today because of those things,” she said. At the joint base where all four branches of the U.S. military were represented, Kimbrough also met foreign servicemembers from as far as Spain, Greece and Australia, and was allowed some liberty to explore, although she said it might be more restrictive in that area today. When she finished active duty in 2012, she returned to Millington to continue duty as a Reservist. Kimbrough said she has never been stationed on a ship, as such assignments for women were rare at one time. Kimbrough achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 2013, and retired in 2016.

Twin brothers serve country multiple times together

T H A N K photo by Adam Robison Clint Norwood, left, and his twin brother Cliff Norwood By Dillon Mullan Daily Journal OKOLONA – Clint and Cliff Norwood grew up hunting and fishing together. The twin brothers – and their teammates – won a football state championship at Okolona High School in 1994. And they worked together at the town’s electric department after graduation. In 2003, they signed up for the Army National Guard on the same day. “You know how they talk about twin intuition?” Cliff Norwood said. “We ain’t never had it. But one day we were at work and he told me ‘I feel sick; I’m going to go home,’ and something didn’t feel right. I drove beside the National Guard and there he was signing up. I went in there and he told me, ‘Don’t sign up.’ And I said, ‘If you won’t, I won’t.’ Then he did and I did.” After graduating from Okolona High School in 1995, Clint Norwood spent six years in the Army National Guard. In 2003, the twins were both working for the Okolona Electric Department when Clint re-joined and Cliff joined the guard a few minutes apart. As part of the Army National Guard’s 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team, which is based in Tupelo, Clint and Cliff Norwood went to Iraq together in 2004 and Afghanistan in 2011. “It’s hot; it’s a lot of sleepless days; but the hardest part is being away from home and missing your kids,” Clint Norwood said. “And you miss good food.” Brother Cliff added a third tour in Iraq in 2007 while Clint

stayed home with a newborn. “It was tough not having him. I was pretty mad not having him the second time, “ Cliff Norwood said. “But I understood.” The brothers, now 43, were both injured as passengers in separate incidents in which trucks struck an Improvised Explosive Device. Cliff broke four vertebras in 2011. Clint needed both knees replaced after his accident in 2012. Now, they both have Purple Hearts. “When it’s cold, I can’t hardly move, and it hurts every day,” Cliff Norwood said. “But I’m not going to complain because I’m alive. There’s a blessing in everything that

happens. That’s my outlook on life, you’ll never hear me complain.” Together the brothers still fish in tournaments as a twoman team. Cliff speaks to Fellowship of Christian Athletes groups at high schools, youth groups, and Wounded Warrior events to spread his optimistic message. “When I see kids in trouble, I say ‘you’ve got to find the blessing. You’ve got to find a way to stay positive,’” Cliff Norwood said. “My sole purpose now is to better our kids so they can change the world.”

VETERANS DAY DAY VETERANS

8F, DAILY DAILY JOURNAL JOURNAL 8F,

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American Veterans - living or dead - but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

Sunday •• NOvembeR November 11, 11, 2018 2018 SUNDAY

• Veterans Day occurs on November 11 every year in the United States. • In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. • In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975 President Gerald Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11, due to the important historical significance of the date. • Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World War I and World War II on or near November 11: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November). • In Europe, Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11. * Facts courtesy of www.history.com/topics/holidays/veterans-day-facts
