The South Pontotoc Cougars had a tough run last season in Division 2-4A, finishing fourth in a field of six, but Coach Chris Vineyard said the grit and determination that have become the earmarks of South teams across the board should help his squad move up the ranks this go-around.
“We played a bunch of seventh-graders last year, so they’ll have more experience and seasoning, and we take pride in having hard-working, coachable kids who can play different positions when the lights come on,” said Vineyard.
Ezekiel Martinez will be Vineyard’s only returning senior and will play center/back, the coach said.
South’s division opponents include Pontotoc, Caledonia, Shannon, Mooreville, and Itawamba AHS.
“We may not always be the biggest, or fastest, but we’re always among the toughest, and we look for kids that give it everything they’ve got,” said Vineyard.
Cougar boys who should also add to the team are senior Ezequiel Martinez, who will play center back, along with Noah Fleming, a forward, and Salvador Diaz, a center midfielder, who Vineyard said, “should lead the charge offensivelly for us.”
On the Lady Cougars’ side, the team graduated two seniors last season, but Vineyard said the girls have high expectations.
“Chelle Corder will be a defensive midfielder for us, and we expect her to provide leadership and bring good experience,” said Vineyard.
Among other players who should make substantial contributions is Yadhira Martinez, a freshman who will play forward.
