2016-2017 New Albany Lady Bulldogs Basketball Team: (Front Row, left to right) Macy Moorehead, Janae Shackleford, Ahlaeya Judon, Jazzmine McWilliams, Tashonda Caviness, Terrica Smith, Madison Foster, Shaitiuana Williams, (Back Row, left to right) Assistant Coach Micha Washington, Jade Johnson, Kelsey Ledbetter, Jada Spears, Kenidi Sanders, Katie Topper, Brittany Vanzant, E’Lexis Jones, Arianna Golden, Head Coach John Stroud.

Lady ‘Dawgs returning roster of experience After a 5-0 start in 2015, injuries to key players saw the New Albany Lady Bulldogs finish with a 6-20 record. This year, seniors Jazzmine McWilliams and Tashonda Caviness have recovered from ACL tears are back for a final run with the Bulldogs. “Before the two of them went down with injuries they were averaging 20 points per game,” Bulldogs head coach John Stroud said, “So between the two of them

we could expect 40 points a game, so offense shouldn’t be a problem.” New Albany will have to replace last year’s leading scorer, shot blocker and rebounder Samantha Bridges, and the Lady Bulldogs will do that with several sophomores who all have matured and grown in the off season after playing a rough schedule during their freshman year. Ahlaeya Judon will take the point guard role while Kenidi Sanders and E’Lexis

Jones round out the starting five with McWilliams and Caviness. Shai Williams and Terrica Smith will be the first two players off the bench for New Albany and a crop of experienced ninth graders will also be in the mix. “Kelsey Lebetter moved up after the junior high season and played some for us last year, and then we’ll also have Macy Moorehead and Brittany Vanzant who will see some playing time,”

Stroud said. New Albany will also play a competitive nondivision schedule with visits to Booneville, Pontotoc and New Site. Division 2-4A play will also be full of challenges. “Our division is a senior girls league this year, so it’s gonna be extremely difficult for us. But I’m just excited about having everyone healthy again and playing with a full deck this year,” Stroud said.

2016-2017 New Albany Bulldogs Basketball Team: (Front Row, left to right) Jordan Lipsey, Xzavion Rutherford, Dee Johnson, Gray Spencer, Alex Ball, (Back Row, left to right) Will Norwood, Sam McMillin, Sam Cagle, Dajuan Jones, Aaron Estes. Not Pictured: Mitchell Shettles.

The 2016 Bulldogs are undersized for Class 4A competition, but New Albany is focused on defensive play as the key to a successful season. “Offense is going to come and go,” New Albany head coach Robert Burdette said, “If we have success, and I think we will, it’ll be determined by if we can guard people. If you can guard people then you always have a chance to win. If you can’t guard people, you’ll

win some nights and other nights you won’t.” New Albany will be anchored by seniors Sam McMillin and Sam Cagle, who are the tallest and most experienced players on the team. Jordan Lipsey also returns and is expected to play point guard for his junior season, along with classmate Aaron Estes. A new face, playing in his senior year, will be Myrtle transfer Dee Johnson and

Bulldog fans will also see Mitchell Shettles in his first varsity action, provided that the freshman isn’t hampered by an offseason injury. Gray Spencer, Xzavion Rutherford and Dajuan Jones are other faces that will hit the court for New Albany, though who will start down the stretch is still up in the air as part of the team are still suiting up to play football. New Albany also faces the challenge of filling the gap left by the graduation of

Miles Washington, the 6’7’ center who is now a red-shirt at Mississippi State. The Bulldogs will answer that problem by changing the game strategy. “We will have to play up tempo in the offense and really play pressure in the full court. We have to create opportunities for ourselves in the full court, and not be so reliant on just sitting in the half-court both offensively and defensively.”

2016-2017 East Union Lady Urchins Basketball Team: (Front Row, left to right) Lacey Taylor, Jessie Roberts, Kallie Roberts, Monae Graham, Callie Frazier, Kaitie Boatner, (Back Row, left to right) Sylvie McVey Baylee Pannell, Maggie Meinz, Lauren Jane Whitenton, Hannah White, Raelee Bell, Bryanne Dill.

Lady Urchins to feature youthful roster East Union Coach Josh Blythe sees a lot of youthful faces when he looks at his Lady Urchins in practices. “We graduated three kids last year that played a lot and a fourth one that some for us too,” Blythe said. “We graduated a lot of playing time and a lot of experience last year.” This year’s version of the Lady Urchins features only three seniors, Kallie Roberts, Monae Graham and Callie Frazier, but eight underclassmen including five

freshmen. “I’m excited about Raelee Bell who played every game last year as a freshman,” Blythe said. “She scored 29 points over in the Delta in the final game that we got put out. I’m excited about her progress.” Lauren Jane Whitenton, a junior, will be the post player for the Lady Urchins again this season. Blythe has high expectations for a big year from her. “She has tremendously improved out here for us,”

Blythe said. Roberts, Graham and Frazier will provide a lot of experience from the past as role players that came off the bench to help the Lady Urchins. “Roberts has started some for us and is coming off a knee injury, so it’s going to be interesting to see what she can do once the season gets going,” Blythe said. “Monae got to see a lot of playing time at the end of last season and she’s going to have to give us a lot of minutes.”

Blythe will also utilize junior Maggie Meinz and freshman Kaitie Boatner to supply some help while hoping to see some of his other freshmen eventually make a contribution on the court. My biggest concern right now is just depth,” Blythe said. “It’s going to be fun, but it’s going to be interesting. I think we’ll know a lot more about ourselves after we’ve played a little bit.”

Urchins will have to overcome inexperience East Union returns only two starters from last season and Coach Tim McDonald hopes to see some of his returning seniors step up and take up some of the slack. “It’s no secret, they (opponents) are going to be looking for Ty (McDonald) every time we play and some of these other seniors are going to have to step up and take some of the pressure off offensively,” McDonald said. “Inexperience is going to be another issue, we’ve

got four or five kids that are going to be playing that have not had much meaningful basketball.” Some of the young players that the Urchins will call on for help include Bo Nobles, Grant White, DeJuan Hubbard and Joel Wilkinson. “I think the experience issue is going to be an issue and we’ve got to get these guys going in a hurry,” McDonald said. “Grant has grown a little bit and we are going to require him to guard

some people and contest some shots. He should be one of our better rebounders.” Ty received Division 1-2A Player of the Year honors for his 24 points and 9.4 rebounds per game average for last season. He shot 54 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line. A tough non-division schedule is in the works for the Urchins as they try to prepare to be a factor in an equally-tough division with

the likes of Baldwyn and Ingomar boys. “There’s not many cupcakes on the schedule and we try to schedule up a little bit, try to get ready for division,” McDonald said. “We’ve got to get ready for our next season (division) which starts in January. I think I’m going to enjoy this group.” East Union had a 12-17 record last year and were eliminated by Walnut in the division tournament.

Lady falcons looking to keep success going Things are looking bright for the defending Class 2A state champions, who have their sights set on another title in 2017. Ingomar returns all five starters from a team that went 34-5 and, for the third year, will field a group that has no seniors among the squad. Even so, the Lady Falcons are made up of veterans as point guard Gara Beth Self, guards Maggie Smithey and Lindsay Hall, and forwards Lauren Thompson and Mallory Russell all begin their fourth season playing

high school basketball. “Every team is different,” head coach Trent Adair said, “even when you have the same exact people back it’s still a process.” This year, Ingomar will have a bench of talent to compliment the starting five with up to seven players getting time in relief minutes. Among that group will be Carson Grisham who will fill the sixth man role for the Lady Falcons, along with Lauren Wooley, Abby Deaton, Allie Williams and Ashley Forester

who all played on the team last season. “As a coach I’ve always been a seven or eight deep kind of guy, but if they are good enough then I’ll have to get out of my comfort zone. My weakness is that I tend to, in close games, get a little tight in terms of bench play. Sometimes, especially early, I just need to put some kids out there and give them a chance to develop and grow,” Adair said. Ingomar will also look to provide a slightly different role for Self, with Adair

planning to capitalize on the sophomore’s maturity both in emotion and physical strength by creating opportunities to score points in addition to running the offense. But, for the most part, it will be business as usual for the Lady Falcons. “We’re gonna be similar to what we’ve been, but you’ve still got to find things to keep your edge. It all comes down to execution. When things get in a bind do you have players that can just go get one?” Adair said.

falcons pushing through team growing pains “I trust those seniors completely, they’re all gonna go out and give us maximum effort and play hard,” Ingomar head coach Jonathan Ashley said. Joining those seniors will be a group of underclassman who will be led by sophomore Trent Bradley. Bradley’s classmates Brandon Keyes and Gabe Burcham, along with freshmen Clayton Stanford and Nathan Weeden will be among the group who come off the bench and might draw a start depending on the

match up that the Falcons are facing in a game. “I’ve always been one that’s kind of had five that started and each had a defined role, but we’ve got several kids that, depending on the match up, may be different every night,” Ashley said. Pickens and Hall will anchor the team with their offensive talent, though both juniors will be relied on to provide much needed defensive play, Ashley said. “It’s not gonna be enough for them just to score, they are gonna have to defend

some of the best players on the other team without getting in foul trouble. They’ll have to rebound it on both ends far more than they did in the past,” Ashley said. Solid rebounding and eliminating easy baskets and second chance points for opposing teams will be the other keys to the Falcons success for a team that will go through a few growing pains early in the season. “If they do what they are capable of doing, I think we could be a formidable opponent,” Ashley said.

Ingomar will field a team that returns the two leading scorers from the 2015 roster in juniors Kelton Hall and Jay Pickens. Those two forwards, who combined for 37 points per game in 2015, will lead a team that is a mix of upperclassmen and young talent. The Falcons have three seniors on their roster in Jon Brooks Almand, Easton Williams and Zack High and all three will contribute to the Ingomar lineup during the season.

Lady Hawks focused on playing smart Myrtle’s roster may be small - made up of just eight girls - but it is a roster that head coach Rob Browning is expecting big things from. “It’s a challenge with just eight girls,” Browning said, “But I’m not complaining because these are eight girls that love it, who want to play, and play hard.” With the graduation of starters Geneshia Montgomery, Amber Cook and Jessica Floyd, the Lady Hawks will look towards senior and returning leading scorer Ivory Montgomery to carry the load on and off the court. “When you lose 80-percent of your scoring and

75-percent of your playing time from one year to the next, it’s tough,” Browning said. “Ivory is gonna be a key part of what we do...the problem with that is everyone knows Ivory so her job is not gonna be easy this year.” Myrtle will see Megan Lowery, Audrey Anna Young, and Karlie Bolden hit the floor with Tyesha Bills once she recovers from a preseason injury. Another face added to the mix is Brianna Nugent, who will see quality floor time after a strong performance in summer league games. Staying healthy and playing smart to avoid foul trou-

ble will be two of the biggest keys for a successful season, Browning said. “We are gonna have to be creative, with eight girls and having to worry about foul trouble, you have to be real creative. We have to play smart, but ultimately what they proved to me this summer is that they play hard. And as a coach, if you can get kids who play and play hard, and if they continue to do that, we’ll be fine,” Browning said. Myrtle will again suit up for Division 2-1A competition where three of the topfour seeds from last season are all rebuilding.

“I believe anyone in our division could beat anybody and lose to anybody on any given night,” Browning said, “It’s not gonna be top heavy, there’s not a clear favorite. It’s a lot more up in the air. It’ll be fun and stressful at the same time.” Myrtle will also host a Girls Classic Tournament on Dec. 3, bringing some of the best talent in Mississippi high school girls basketball, and several strong out of state teams to compete in a one day tournament. “It’ll be a really, really good day of girls basketball,” Browning said.

Hawks rebuilding with new offensive Scheme taking more outside shots than fans might have seen from the team in the past three years thanks to size at the post position. Anthony Lipsey, Jonathan Scales, Josh Goolsby and Titus Gillard all return for their senior year with Goolsby and Gillard expected to draw starts for the Hawks. Another senior who will see quality playing time is Darshawn Hill, the younger brother of 2016 graduate Chris Hill. “I’ve got a group that is smart and know the game, so we’ve been able to do some things offensively that I’ve

always wanted to do,” Browning said. Myrtle will forgo having a specific point guard for the opening portion of the season, depending on the guard heavy roster to rotate in the spot. “What I love about playing guards is that you don’t have to necessarily pick out a point guard. If we are running the ball the way that we want to be, anyone can take on that role,” Browning said. Gillard, Goolsby and Jay Cook will all see minutes in the spot, with Hill and Lipsey also handling the ball

at times. Myrtle will play yet again in a competitive Division 2-1A slate that features defending Class 1A state champion Ashland. “Everyone really is chasing them [Ashland], but I think we are right there in the mix, and you’ve got some other times like West Union, Hickory Flat, Falkner....it’ll be a competitive season.” Myrtle will also host a four day tournament in early December, and have trips scheduled with Itawamba, Vardaman, Houlka and Ripley on the schedule for non-division competition.

McCullough takes over the coaching duties from Matt Thompson after serving as head coach at Cleveland High School for 18 years in Division 4A. “Our players here are super intelligent and they try very hard, they give their best effort,” McCullough said. “Basketball is a game, it’s meant to be fun and we are going to compete. That’s

the biggest thing is we are going to compete and give our best effort.” The Lady Eagles will suit up two seniors and two juniors so the bulk of the roster will be made up of very young athletes. “Our biggest thing is to play present and be right there,” McCullough said. “We are going to play good defense and we are going to move on if we make mistakes. That’s why we practice so we can get better.” Kylie Massengill and Emily Canoy will be the senior leaders for the Lady Eagles.

“If there is anyone that works harder and gives better effort that Kylie, I have not seen it in 28 years of coaching,” McCullough said. “I tell her constantly what a great leader she is and she is such a positive role model for all of these younger players. Emily is constantly working and I have seen so much improvement in her game. Again, that’s great leadership and that makes the whole team better.” Mattie Pilcher and Jenny Thompson have stepped into roles to help the Lady Eagles as scorers and playmakers.

“Those four will be our main players and we are going to depend on them,” McCullough said. McCullough has been overwhelmed by the support from the school administrators, fellow coaches, teachers, parents and fans at West Union, saying that it is fantastic and that all have a huge role to play in the success of the team West Union finished last year with a record of 26-11 overall and 8-2 in Division 2-1A.

2016-2017 West Union Eagles Basketball Team: (Front Row, left to right) David Clayton, Peyton Taylor, Austin Kiddy, David Greer, Cole Phillips, Sam Callicutt, (Second Row, left to right) Middle: Ryder Willard, Bobby High, Austin Graham, Isaiah High, Riley Bogue, Chance Bogue, Myles Steen, (Back Row, left to right) Head Coach Timbo Henderson, Jerod McDonald, Brock Carter, Andrew Childers, Dillon Clayton, Cory Willis, Gavin Mitchell, Luke Willard, Braden Willard, Assistant Coach Nathan Tidwell.

The West Union Eagles have traditionally had a smaller lineup height-wise in years past, but Coach Timbo Henderson will have several players in excess of the sixfoot mark in 2016-17. “We will look a little different this year, typically we are 5’-11” and down,” Henderson said. “This year we actually will have several players that are at that 6’ to 6’2” mark, so we are going to look a little taller than we’ve looked in the past.” Henderson added that the

Eagles have hit the weight room hard and in addition to the added inches, the Eagles should be stronger as well. “Hopefully we are going to be a little thicker and a little stronger plus the height which should help us this season,” Henderson said. West Union will have five seniors on this year’s roster including Andrew Childers, Austin Kiddy, Dillon Clayton, Riley Bogue and Myles Steen. “Three to four of them (seniors) have seen as many

minutes as you possibly could at this age, said Henderson. “Each of these five have played in big moments and games so we’re definitely going to look to those five.” West Union will have six juniors that have not seen quite as significant playing time as the seniors, but most have seen some quality minutes. “They’re growing hungry for some playing time and they are going to get that this year,” Henderson said.

“I’ve also got a couple of sophomores and a freshman or two that are right behind them. It’s going to be fun this year.” West Union will compete in Division 2-1A which is always loaded with good talent and tough opponents so Henderson and the Eagles hope a competitive non-division slate will prepare them for the their division foes. West Union was16-21 (28) last season.

Lady Bulldogs seek another division title New Albany’s Lady Bulldogs have owned the Division 1-4A soccer title for the past four years and Coach Bert Anderson returns a veteran squad that would appear poised to take the crown again this season. “This will be one of the few years since we’ve been here that we’ve been experienced,” Anderson said. “We have 14 juniors and seniors and all of those except for one or two have been with us since Caryl (Vogel) and I have been here the whole

five years.” Anderson will look to replace two seniors, midfielder Meghan Van and keeper Katie Davis with the wealth of returning players. “I’m excited to see how the experience goes into play,” Anderson said. Mary Day and Cynthia Betancourt are key seniors that Anderson will turn to for leadership on and of the pitch for the Lady Bulldogs. “They’ve been around and Mary has started since her eighth grade year while

Cynthia has either started or played the last three or four years,” Anderson said. “They are the leaders on the field as far as showing us how to play and are vocal as well. Daisy Huerta will be another leader that’s a senior.” Avery Robbins and Rachel Rainey are veterans will join Day and Huerta on the defense, but Anderson will have to find a keeper with the graduation of Davis. “Defensively, having Daisy back will help with Rachel and Avery back there

and we may move Mary to the midfield some,” Anderson said. “It seems like every year that we are looking for a keeper. This year we have Karlie Topper and Grace Thompson and we will see if one of them takes over, but if we have to we will do it by committee.” Sanders Goode, Carey Beth Doyle, Josi Hill, Sarah Kathryn Harris and Becca Childers bolster the Lady Bulldogs in the midfield and at the forward positions.

Not Pictured: Ray Bright, JD Campbell, Gray Goode, Caleb McDonald, John MacGregor Davis, John Wright Welborn, Addison Ziegler, B.B. Mason, Payton Snyder, Perry McKinney, Joseph Rainey, Drew Welborn.

Coach Caryl Vogel describes his Bulldogs as experienced, but not with longevity since a lot of players had a great deal of playing time last season. “The kids have played and last year was a very tough year with the division battle that we were put through,” Vogel said. “I think that they are battle-tested and the younger kids have grown up a lot faster. Usually the seniors are leaders, but everyone is carrying their own weight,.

Vogel is not sure as to how the Bulldogs will line up position-wise, but will attempt to find what is the best fit for the team. “In the middle we will have Sergio Mejia, Joe Rainey and Esteban Contreras and those guys are going to have to be really big for us,” Vogel said. “Jesus Favela will be back up top for us. Drew Wellborn and Hayden Anderson are defenders that are coming back for us...We will lean heavily on Joe, Sergio and Esteban in the middle.”

Vogel will need to fill the void in the goal with the graduation of Mason Chapin and Leo Castillo will be turned to work in the net. “We lost two center backs, so those are huge holes to fill,” Vogel said. We’ve got to find two players to fill those spots plus we lost a center midfielder. We didn’t lose as many players as the year before, but we lost some very important parts.” The Bulldogs will play an extremely competitive nondivision schedule to prepare

them for the all-important division matches in December and January. “We are going to play Florence, West Lauderdale, Richland plus 5A and 6A schools to prepare us for the division we are going to be in,” Vogel said. “Ripley came out of nowhere last year with a great team and you’ve got Corinth that’s always battling for a playoff spot. We’ve got to be tested and go through those teams to prepare for what has become a really tough soccer division.”
