2017-18 New Albany Lady Bulldogs Basketball Team: Front row left - Endya Worship, Madison Foster, Kenidi Sanders, Ahlaeya Judon, Cartiana Bailey, Shaitiuna Williams. Back row left - Dakoyta Lesure, Ashanti High, E’Lexis Jones, Analisa Cheairs, Jada Spears, Emma Laney, Kelsey Ledbetter.

Lady Bulldogs will be work in progress

N

ew Albany Lady Bulldogs will see an assortment of changes and roles in the 2017-18 season, first of which will be at head coach as Micha Washington begins her first year in that position after having served as John Stroud’s assistant the previous two years. The Lady Bulldogs also lost their top two offensive players to graduation and will look to two or three players to step up as offensive leaders. “The ball is literally in anyone’s court who can step up and be the offensive leaders we need them to be,” Washington said. “I’m hoping someone steps up to be that offensive leader - I’m letting them decide.” As far as overall team leader, Washington will be looking for all six of her upper classmen to be leaders not only with their actions, but in addition to their voices. “Due to the youthfulness of our

8

2017 Winter Sports Preview

team, it is vital that they exemplify great leadership skills to help bridge the gap from our experienced player to our young players without high school basketball experience,” Washington said. Kenidi Sander will be one of the top defensive players for the Lady Bulldogs. “Kenidi is hardworking and driven, loves and desires to play defense,” Washington said. “She will sacrifice personal stats on the offensive end to stop the other team’s best offensive player.” New Albany is still a work in progress according to Washington, but she is pleased with the progress they have made with transitioning with a new coach and accepting new roles despite the fact that many players are young and inexperienced. “All have bought into the new system and all have adapted to change,”

Washington said. “Success is in the development of the upperclassmen, if they go, we go. New Albany is coming off a 16-13 record for 2016-17 and the returning players have become the ones to draw the blueprint for how the team will operate on and off the court, according to Washington. Key non-division games for the Lady Bulldogs include games with Pontotoc, New Site and Ingomar. Washington hopes these contests will give her a gauge on mental toughness and how well the Lady Bulldogs measure up. X-Factor - “For us to be successful, my upperclassmen will have to buy into playing defense for 32 minutes and understanding that offense comes easy when you play defense,” Washington said.

New Albany to emphasize perimeter game

T

he New Albany Bulldogs will again have the issue of being undersized when it comes to the majority of the competition they face, but Coach Robert Burdette hopes his perimeter play will pick up the Bulldog offense. “Our guard play should be our strength and we will depend on our perimeter players for most of our offense,” Burdette said. “We do not have much depth inside so staying away from foul trouble is important.” Burdette enters his third year at New Albany and the Bulldogs are coming off a 2016-17 campaign that saw them go 8-18 overall and 1-5 in division. This year’s division opponents in 1-4A will be Byhalia, Corinth, Ripley Senatobia and Tishomingo County. A couple of players that Burdette sees as key team leaders for the Bulldogs will be senior point guard

Jordan Lipsey and junior forward Troy Payne. “Jordan has started the last two years and has developed into a very dependable point guard,” Burdette said. “I look for Jordan to score more this year and run the team efficiently.” Payne returns to the Bulldogs after missing most of last season due to injury. “After missing most of last year due to a stress fracture in his leg, Troy has worked very hard to improve his skill set,” Burdette said. “We lack depth in the post so Troy will be called on to have a big year for us.” Other Bulldogs that will be called upon to provide offensive help include Will Norwood, DaJuan Jones and Isaiah Ball. “Top defensive players will include Zach Ball as our best perimeter defender and Troy defending in the

post,” Burdette said. Leading scorers returning for the Bulldogs include Jones with 7.6 points per game and Lipsey with his 7.3 average. Isaiah is third among returners with his point average with 6.0. Lipsey led the team in assists with a season total of 51 while Jones had 37. Jones pulled down 74 total rebounds in 2016 and Lipsey chipped in 56. Non-division games that will be key for the Bulldogs will be 4A Pontotoc as well as a home and away matchup with county rival Ingomar. The Bulldogs will again compete in the Union County Tournament in January after a two-year absence which always provides intense competition from all participants. X-Factor - “We cannot turn over the ball,” Burdette said.

EAST UNION BASKETBALL

2017 -18 East Union Lady Urchins Basketball Team: Front row left - Emily Hall, Sylvie McVey, Maggie Meinz, Lauren Jane Whitenton, Katie Boatner, Raelee Bell. Back row left - Cayley Johnson, Jessie Roberts, Bryanne Dill, Baylee Pannell, Hannah White, Maggie McVey, Callie Smith, Hope Robbins.

Lady Urchins’ strength is returning players

E

ast Union will look to their returning role players from a year ago to provide the leadership key to strengthening the team concept that Coach Josh Blythe emphasizes. Blythe enters his sixth year as head coach of the Lady Urchins and the team is coming off their successful year in basketball as they finished the at 22-9. “We were 22-9 in 2016 which was the first time in 20 years to eclipse the 20-win mark for girls basketball,” Blythe said. “Lauren Jane Whitenton and Maggie Meinz are our lone seniors. Lauren Jane has been playing big-time minutes for us since 10th grade and Meinz has patiently waited her turn for her opportunity and that time is now.” Offensively, Blythe will count on Whitenton and Raelee Bell to be the point-producers as each averaged 15

12

2017 Winter Sports Preview

points per game in 2016. The trio of Whitenton, Bell and Katie Boatner are the returning staters from last season and along with Meinz, will be called upon to lead East Union’s fortunes in the upcoming year. “Kaitie B was our best on the ball defender last year and with a year under her belt, we expect her to take on more of a role in scoring. Meinz is a kid who is one of the smartest basketball minds that I’ve ever coached, she’s like a coach on the floor and I’m very excited for her.” Blythe sees the non-division schedule as on that it packed with challenging games from the beginning. In division, East Union will face Ingomar, New Site and Baldwyn which are perennial playoff teams. “Anytime you have Ingomar, New Site and Baldwyn in your division,

you have you work cut out,” Blythe said. “Those three are year in and year out, some of the best teams in the state.” The Lady Urchins return the core of their team from last season, but Blythe sees depth as a possible weakenss. He expects 10th graders Bryanne Dill, Jessie Roberts, Hannah While and Sylvie McVey to battle for playing time along with ninth-grader Maggie McVey. “We need some young kids to step up and execute for us to be successful,” Blythe said. X-Factor - “Without a doubt, health will be our x-factor,” Blythe said. “We’ve got to get healthy and stay healthy. We’ve got to get Bell and Boatner back and in the best shape we can before we start the season. They’ve missed considerable time due to injury.”

East Union needs defense to be successful

T

he East Union Urchins will have to replace their leading scorer from 2016 and Coach Tim McDonald sees the need for defense to trigger a successful 2017 season. McDonald will be entering his 14th year as coach at his alma mater. “We’ve got two or three kids that shoot it pretty well, but our biggest question is can we stop anyone on the other end,” McDonald said. East Union returns team leaders Bo Nobles and Larry Robbins from 2016 which saw the Urchins finish 11-18 overall and 2-4 in division. “These two are my hardest workers and I expect them to be our vocal leaders,” McDonald said. Bo is our top returning offensive player, but I’m expecting Joseph Yeager and Hayden Richey to carry some scoring

load. Bo’s going to receive a lot of attention, so these other two guys are going to have to take some pressure off him.” Division opponents for the Urchins will be Baldwyn, Ingomar, New Site, Strayhorn and Walnut in an always tough division schedule. McDonald will look to a quartet of players to play key roles on the Urchin defense. “Our top defensive player is Larry Robbins, but I’m looking to Thomas Gentry, Weston Mallet and Madison Croft to step up and be solid on the defensive end,” McDonald said. Key games in the non-division slate for the Urchins other than the always tough Union County rivals include Kossuth, South Pontotoc and North Pontotoc. East Union will face

all three teams in a seven-day stretch in December and McDonald seed that as a means to measure up the Urchins pretty well. Statistical leaders for the Urchins include Nobles with his 9.8 points per game average while Robbins hit for an average of 7.9 points per contest. Robbins had 63 total rebounds for the 2016 season and Nobles had 20 total. X-Factor - “For our team to be successful, we need a couple of the football guys to come in here and get going quickly,” McDonald said. “Colton Plunk is probably going to be our best athlete in the gym and DeJuan Hubbard has got some offensive skills to offer. I need to get them going as soon as possible.”

Lady Falcons hope to win the trifecta

I

ngomar Lady Falcons have the rare opportunity to go for the gold ball a third consecutive season as the Lady Falcons return everyone from last year plus two. Mallory Russell returns after being sidelined by an injury that caused her to miss the playoffs and Jatyjia Jones joins the Lady Falcons after previously playing at Pontotoc. Coach Trent Adair returns to lead the Lady Falcons for a seventh season after guiding Ingomar finished their state championshio season at 36-3. “We have a team full of juniors and seniors that have a ton of experience,” Adair said. “Each of them lead in different ways. Gara Beth Self is probably the most vocal on the floor, but all have their part in making sure we are doing things on and off the court that are beneficial to our

14

2017 Winter Sports Preview

mission.” Balance is a key word to describe the Lady Falcons as they are loaded with talent that will not allow opponents to zero in on one particular player. “One of our strengths of our team is that we feel like you have to guard all five on the court at a time,” Adair said. “Defensively, our system relies on the cohesion of all five on the floor playing off each other. The Lady Falcons will play a very competitive non-division schedule and Adiar lists key games of Pine Grove, Lafayette and New Albany as games to watch. Ingomar will also compete in tournaments at Bay High Christmas Invitational and a matchup with Tupelo at Tangle on the Trail. Mid-Mississippi Challnge and Robertson’s Ladies Challenge are a couple of other tournaments that will

allow the Lady Falcons to face top competition. The Lady Falcons feature a team with seasoned veterans that have faced top-rated opponents for the past two years with overwhelming success. “We feel like we have a really good blend of guards and inside presence that gives us options to play,” Adair said. “We feel like we have the depth to be able to handle foul trouble. The girls have bought into our defensive philosophy and with great effort, they can be really successful on that end.” X-Factor - “I think our X factor is going to be able to block our outside noise coming from all directions. Whether it’s everyone patting them on the back or letting envy, jealousy and greed get into their heart. It’s a journey as a team.”

Ingomar Falcons hungry to be successful

T

he Ingomar Falcons hope to improve on a 23-12 season that ended in the second round of 2A playoffs at the hands of Okolona. Coach Jonathan Ashley will take the sideline at Ingomar to direct the Falcons in his sixth year with Kelton Hall and Jay Pickens as his key players to lead the Falcons.” “They will set the tone for us on how hard to play on the defensive end,” Ashley said. “If they set high expectations of themselves, then everyone will follow suit.” Hall and Pickens led the Falcons offensively on the hardwood last season as Hall averaged 24.3 points per game and Pickens was second with his average of 16.5 points. The

pair were dangerous from the threepoint arc as Hall connected on 125 of 358 for 35 percent while Pickens was 57 of 176 for 32 percent. Hall also pulled down 227 rebounds while Pickens totaled 167. Clayton Stanford had 178 rebounds for second highest on the team. “Our top offensive players are Kelton and Jay,” Ashley said. “When they shoot it well we can be good. Zach (Shugars), Clayton (Stanford), Trent (Bradley), Kelon (Hall), Brandon (Keys) and Trey (Keys) have all developed offensively from last year. Everyone needs to be a top defender for us to achieve what we would like to achieve.” Ashley says this has been a fun

bunch to coach and thinks they are hungry to be successful. “If we can carry that over to every game, we will take our chances,” Ashley said. “Offensively, we need to get quality shots and get the shots we want instead of the shots the other teams want us to settle for.” A couple of areas that need to be addressed for the Falcons in Ashley’s eyes are to be highly successful with their half court defense and to get consistent effort on both glasses. X-Factor - “We need to all buy into the fact that defense wins championships and the little things make the big things possible,” Ashley said.

2017-18 Myrtle Lady Hawks Basketball Team: Front row left - Breanna Smith, Brianna Nugent, Karlie Bolden, Megan Lowrey, Sarah Kate Thompson, Avery Lollar. Back row left - Kaitlyn Senn, Lexi Hutcheson, Jayde McDonald, Tyesha Bills, Mykayla Foster, Hannah Lauderdale, Mary Lee Lollar.

Lady Hawks hope to rebound from 2016

T

he Myrtle Lady Hawks had to endure a tough 2016 season that saw injuries deplete an already thin pool of players and eventually end on a 1-28 note. Coach Rob Browing starts year five with the Lady Hawks and will have three returning seniors to lead the team. “Megan Lowrey, Karlie Bolden and Tyesha Bills are our three seniors,” Browining said. “They’ve been through the good and the bad in their three years, so we will look for them to help these young girls deal with the long grind of a basketball season.” The Lady Hawks will compete in the tough Division 2-1A with Ashland,

18

2017 Winter Sports Preview

H.W. Byers, Falkner, Hickory Flat, Potts Camp and county rival West Union. Ashland is the defending division champion of the regular season. “We will look to be balanced on both ends,” Browing said. “Brianna Nugent and Tyesha will be leaned on to score this year, but lots of girls will contribute.” Myrtle’s roster will feature nine new faces that were not with them at the beginning of 2016. Breanna Smith, Sarah Kate Thompson, Avery Lollar, Kaitlyn Senn, Lexi Hutcheson, Jayde McDonald, Mykayla Foster, Hannah Lauderdale and Mary Lee Lollar complete the Lady Hawk roster.

One of the top non-division dates for the Lady Hawks will be their Christmas tournament that will take place over a two day period and will feature some talented teams from around the area and across the state of Mississippi. The Lady Hawks will really need to stay healthy this season as they saw their leading scorer go down to injury early in the 2016 season with an already limited bench. “Our strengths will be the girls willingness to learn and play extremely hard,” Browning said. X-Factor - “This will be how quickly our young girls respond to the speed of the game,” Browning said.

2017-18 Myrtle Hawks Basketball Team: Front row left - Zach Whitehead, Josh Goolsby, Joshua Swan, Jeremy McIntosh, Dillon Kennon, Brady Hogue. Back row left - Elijah Thompson, Jarrett Prather, A.I. Nugent, Evan Gann, JT Hudson, Jay Cook. Not pictured: Elijah Ingram.

Smaller Hawks convert to strong guard play

M

yrtle had the luxury of several big men over the past several seasons, but fifth year Coach Rob Browning will now have to change his strategy and go with the guards in order to achieve success in 2017. “The strength for us will be our guard play,” Browning said. “Just about all of them can handle the ball when they need to. We are small so that’s a disadvantage.” The Hawks return a trio of seniors Josh Goolsby, Dillon Kennon and Brady Hogue. Browning will need these guys to lead his young team on and off the hardwood.

“Josh, Dillon and Brady will all be seniors and will have to lead this group of mostly seniors and freshmen,” Browning said. “These same three will have to lead the way on both ends of the floor as well as Elijah Ingram, a freshman that played some last year. Jay Cook saw some time last year for the Hawks and will be joined by the numerous freshmen that Browing is looking to for help. Myrtle will be playing in Division 2-1A with Ashland, H.W. Byers, Falkner, Hickory Flat, Potts Camp and county rival West Union. All teams will be tough opponents and will require playing at a top-level

to be successful. The Myrtle Christmas Tournament will feature quality teams from around the area and a couple of non-division games that the Hawks have circled will be with Houlka and Biggersville. Last season the Hawks were 2013 overall and 8-3 in division. The Hawks defeated Hamilton in the first round of 1A playoffs before falling to Shaw by a final of 65-55. X-Factor - The x-factor for us will be how quickly we adjust to losing four players that played big minutes last year and how quickly our freshmen can help us,” Browning said.

2017-18 West Union Lady Eagles Basketball Team: Front left - Allie Green, Jenny Thompson, Hannah Rogers, Makenna Ewing, Jennah Morris, Anna Grubbs, Samantha Stevens. Back row left - Mary Greer, Taylor Rumsey, Mackenzie Morris, Annie Orman, Vicki Jennings, Eden Conlee, Sophie Hooker.

Lady Eagles see success as team effort

C

oach Jenny McCullough enters her second year with the Lady Eagles and her point of emphasis for her girls is the team concept. In her first year with West Union, McCullough led a very youthful team to a record of 11-23. “There is no “STAR” player on this team,” McCullogh said. “TEAM, TEAM, TEAM, functioning as one unit. No one is more important than anyone else.” Makenna Ewing is the lone returning senior and will be joined by juniors Allie Green, Jenny Thompson and Anna Grubbs are upperclassmen that are returning lettermen along with

20

freshmen Eden Conlee and Annie Orman. Orman will be the top scorer among the returning lettermen with there 8.3 average while Green averaged 5.1 points. Green is a threat beyond the three point line, hitting on 33 of 104 shots for 32 percent. Green led last years team in rebounding, pulling down 210 boards on the season. Thompson has 118 rebounds for the Lady Eagles. “Every single person in our program, from our managers to our seniors play an important role in our success,” McCullough said. “It is a blessing to be their coach!”

Other players expected to contribute for the Lady Eagles include sophomore Samantha Stevens and freshmen Vicki Jennings, Sophie Hooker, Mary Greer and Mackenzie Morris. West Union will play in Division 2-1A with Ashland, H.W. Byers, Falkner, Hickory Flat, Potts Camp and county rival Myrtle. Last season the Lady Eagles had a 500 season in division, going 5-5. X-Factor - “The girls are giving their very best effort to improve every single day, McCullough said. They have terrific attitudes and are very supportive of each other.”

WEST UNION BASKETBALL Dennis Clayton/Gazette Staff

2017-18 West Union Eagles Basketball Team: Front row left - Jon Paul Porter, Andrew Wilder, Dylan Ewing, Brandon Phillips, J.Q. Brewer. Middle row left - Sam Callicutt, Dylan Gates, Caleb Graves, Cole Phillips, Peyton Taylor, David Greer, Jacob Sanford. Back row left - Braden Willard, Austin Graham, Cory Willis, Jerod McDonald, Gavin Mitchell, Luke Willard, Ryder Willard, Bobby High.

West Union hopes to prove tough competition

C

oach Timbo Henderson enters year six at West Union and the mindset he wants to see is competition as the Eagles attempt to build on last season’s 17-18 record. “We got competition as our mindset this year,” Henderson said. “We want to compete in everything we do, during every drill in practice, during every second of every game and in every class. We have to have a desire to be the best and a work ethic to match whatever the task before us is.” Returning for the Eagles this season are Bobby High, Cory Willis, Ryder Willard and Cole Phillips, four players that have the most game experience form 2016. Gavin Mitchell will be looked to for quality minutes and Luke Willard should be able to help the Eagles as well.

“We lost the majority of our offensive production in our seniors form last year,” Henderson said. “On the defensive side, we are going to have more returning statistical leaders than offensively.” Key non-division games for the Eagles this season include dates with Ingomar, North and South Pontotoc, Baldwyn, Amory and New Albany. “My biggest concern going into this season will be our inexperience,” Henderson said. “We only have a couple of guys with substantial playing time from previous years. We’ve got a good group of sophomores that are itching from some playing time, so if some of our older guys aren’t ready, they will be sitting on go.” Henderson is confident in his team’s ability and is hoping that his players have as much confidence in

themselves and he has in them. The Eagles hope to avoid the injury bug which bit them at the end of last season and Henderson is hoping that some early injuries this season will mend and the Eagles can push forward and overcome them. Division play will include games with Ashland, H.W. Byers, Falkner, Hickory Flat, Potts Camp and county rival Myrtle. West Union went 6-4 in division play during the 2016 season with the four losses coming at the hands of Ashland and Myrtle. X-Factor - “We will have to be able to knock down open shots when we get them, if we don’t, we will limit ourselves offensively,” Henderson said. “I think the biggest thing this year will be who steps up? At some point, we’re going to need a guy to step up and fill a role.”

Lady Bulldogs loaded with experience

T

he New Albany Lady Bulldogs have a lot of experience coming back for the 2017-18 season, but most of that experience will be on offensive end of the field and third year coach Bert Anderson will be looking to fit all the piece together to make a deep playoff run. “We have nine seniors who have been in our program since the seventh grade, so my expectations are for them to lead us throughout the year,” Anderson said. “We have enough experience to where they should recognize different situations either in practice or a game and be able to handle the situation to help the team.” Top players offensively for the Lady Bulldogs will be Sanders Goode, Carey Beth Doyle, Josi Hill and Becca Childers. “As has been the case for the last couple of years, we will look to

36

Sanders to be our playmaker on the offensive side of the ball,” Anderson said. “When teams try to contain Sanders, we have several girls that will be more than able to take over a game with Carey Beth, Josi, or Becca stepping up to carry the team.” Anderson will look to Sarah Kat Harris and Carly Hill to help set the pace offensively from their midfield position and settle down the game defensively. Rachel Rainey returns to the back line on defense, but Avery Robbins is coming back from an injury during the playoffs and Anderson expects for it to take several weeks for her to be able to catch up with the speed of the game. “There is no question the experience we have with this team is probably the most we have had since I have been here,” Anderson said. With that experience comes high expectations

that we have set for ourselves. We can’t allow all the experience we have to get complacent and not be ready to play every time ewe step on the field.” Anderson points to two early games on the schedule as key for the Lady Bulldogs as they face Saltillo and Corinth on back-to-back nights. Anderson thinks those games will tell a lot about this year’s team. X-Factor - “We know starting the year that we will have questions around the goal keeper and our back line,” Anderson said. “That’s not to say we don’t have girls that we can depend on, it’s just that have not had a chance to get a lot of playing time with the upperclassmen they have had in front of them. I have complete confidence in them and they just need to be confident in themselves.”

2017-18 New Albany Boys Soccer Team: Front row left - J.D. Campbell, Jorge Favela, Ray Bright, John Wright Welborn, Whit Robbins, Jamie Raimrez. Second row left - Ricardo Cuevas, Dylan Reynoso, Max Spencer, Uriel Aguirre, Cade Huffman, John McGregor Davis, Daniel Avila, Addison Ziegler, Ken Olson, Esteban Contreras. Back row left - Alejandro Rodriguez, Leo Contreras, Braulio Cuellar, Brian Romero, Carlos Romero, Tripp Mills, Alex Austin, Jacob Hogue, Hayden Anderson, Musharaf Alowdi, Parker Clayton.

‘Dawgs add new faces, play in new Division help lead and guide,” Vogel said. “However, our freshman-senior class has done a great job of carrying the load of leadership and leading by example.” Positions that Vogel will look to fill this season includes three of the four defenders plus the goal keeper from 2016. “Offensively, We are not looking to have one player scoring 20-plus goals, but multiple players scoring in the double digits, Vogel said. “We are a young team, but a technically-gifted, hard-working, soccer-loving group of players. This is the best preseason I have experienced in my five years at New Albany and I believe if this team continues to develop throughout the season, we can have a very successful season.” The Bulldogs have filled their non-division with other 4A teams

in the area as well as 5A-6A teams from DeSoto County and the Golden Triangle area to help them prepare for their tough Division 1-4A schedule. Some of the teams on the schedule are Center Hill, DeSoto Central New Hope, Caledonia and Corinth. X-Factor - “We must understand the season is as process, not an event,” Vogel said. “We have scheduled tough non-division games to prepare us for the Division 1-4A gauntlet. There will be highs and lows, we will have to grow from our mistakes. How we respond to our non-division games mentally and the steps we take forward will decide how our season goes. We have the potential to be a very successful team this season, this team is as technically gifted or more technically gifted than any team I’ve had at New Albany so far.”

ew Albany will compete in Division 1-4A again this season, but they will face an entirely new cast of opponents as Amory, Itawamba AHS, Mooreville and Pontotoc move in. New Albany will play this new division setup with a lot of new faces in their lineup after graduating eight seniors. “We are replacing eight seniors,” New Albany coach Caryl Vogel said. “Hayden Anderson, Esteban Contreras, B.B. Mason and Payton Snyder had substantial playing time last season and there are a few more who saw limited time, returning.” Vogel begins his sixth year at the helm of the Bulldogs and the 2016-17 team finished 11-8-2 overall and were the Division 1-4A runner-up. “We have a senior class of six players, we will look to Esteban Contreras and Hayden Anderson to
