Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee The King George County Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee is appointed by the Board of Supervisors to represent the citizens of their corresponding districts. In addition, the Committee has two non-voting members representing NSWC and the students. Members advise staff on issues related to programs, planning and services; and aid in conceptualizing departmental facilities and operations. Members meet the third Wednesday of every month beginning at 6:30pm at the Citizens Center. Programs are offered throughout the County. Most facilities are located within a twenty minute drive. For your convenience, we have listed the main sites used and their addresses and abbreviations used throughout this guide. If you are still unsure where a facility is located, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Our facilities are: Citizens Center - King George County Citizens Center – 8076 Kings Highway (Rt. 3); 8:00am – 9:00pm weekdays and 12:00am on weekends for programs and rentals. Barnesfield Park – 3360 Barnesfield Road (off Rt. 301, 1 mile South of Potomac River – Harry G. Nice Bridge) Shiloh Park - 11259 Henry Griffin Rd. off Rt. 205. Tennis Courts - King George County Tennis Center – 8246 Dahlgren Road (Rts 206 & 3) – daylight use only except during school hours. In addition to the facilities used for programs, the Parks and Recreation Department is directly responsible for the oversight of Wayside Park, Barnesfield Park, Wilmont Landing, Sealston Sports Complex and the Citizens Center. Sealston Sports Complex is a 45 acre park adjoing Sealston Elementary School. Currently, this facility consists of a 10 acre multipurpose field and four baseball/softball fields, 2 lighted ball fields, picnic shleter, restroom and concession stand. There is limited parking within the park and additional parking is permitted at the school’s parking lot. Wayside Park is a 10 acre park site on the Potomac River located on Route 301 at the Harry G. Nice Memorial Bridge. Amenities include several picnic tables, two grills and approximately 100 yards of beach. Parking is limited on-site; however, there is additional parking located at the commuter parking lot adjoining the Welcome Center and at Barnesfield (a short 5 minute stroll). Barnesfield Park is located on Route 301 approximately one mile south of the Harry G. Nice Memorial Bridge. This 150 acre park has 2 picnic shelters, 3 baseball/softball fields, 1 Little League size field, 2 multipurpose fields, outdoor basketball courts and fitness loop. Wilmont Landing – this landing provides public boat access to the Rappahannock River. This site has very limited parking available. Wilmont Landing is located on Wilmont Road off of Rollins Fork Road (Rt. 681). To reach Rollins Fork Road, follow Rt. 3 approximately 6 miles east of Rt 301 & 3 intersection. Citizens Center – located at 8076 Kings Highway (across from The Shops at King George shopping center). Inside the Center is the Parks and Recreation office, a conference room, a banquet room and kitchen. Tuesday through Thursday mornings, the Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging offers a program for mature adults on one side of the banquet hall while the other side is used for a variety of recreational activities. Recreational programs are offered on-site all week long. When not in use for departmental activities, the Center may be rented for functions. Outside, there are sand volleyball courts, a playground and a couple of picnic tables. Shiloh Park - located at the old landfill site off Rt. 205, our newset facility (to open in the Fall) has one NCAA size baseball field, multi-purpose field, playground, an approximate 1 mile loop walking path and plenty of parking.

Movie-Goers Come to the Parks and Recreation Department to get your discounted Regal Cinema Movie Tickets. We offer two types of tickets, the VIP Super Saver and Premier Super Saver. VIP Super Saver tickets are $7.50 each and allow individuals to see a movie two weeks after being released. Premier Super Saver tickets cost $8.50 each and have no restrictions.
General Information IMPORTANT General Program Information: Please Read. The programs that are listed in this Program Guide are the programs that we had planned by the publication due date. Please check our website for additional programs or call the Department for any updated programs. Due to facility uses, programs may be subject to changes in times and/or locations. Please verify with the Department upon registering. We attempt to notify you as early as possible with any program change. If we fail to reach you, please accept our apology for any inconvenience caused. Please register for classes in advance. Waiting until the last minute may cause a class to cancel. Classes may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. Unless otherwise noted or notified by an instructor/program supervisor, classes/programs may be held on holidays. LATE REGISTRATION FEES: A $10 late fee will be imposed on any program registrations coming in after the designated deadline. Any late registrations coming in beyond two weeks after the registration deadline will be assessed $20 plus any additional cost associated with ordering
equipment or supplies. Inclement Weather Policy: At this time, the King George County Parks and Recreation Department follows the King George County Schools schedule for programs offered in the schools. Programs offered at other locations are dealt with on a case by case basis. Insufficient Funds - Checks returned for insufficient funds will be assessed a $35 fee by the Treasurer’s Office and the check-writer’s name will be forwarded to our Department. The Department will no longer be able to accept checks from said check-writer. Refunds Full refunds are issued in the event a program cancels; or if the Department is notified prior to the program starting and where no costs are incurred. Where costs were incurred for deposits, apparel, equipment or any other program related expenses; those costs will be deducted from the refund. No cash refunds will be given. Refunds generally take two to four weeks to receive due to accounts payable cycle. Refunds are not issued after programs begin

Fall 2014 KGP&R 5 or for unattended classes. Unusual circumstances will be handled on a case by case basis and may be subject to being credited for unused funds. Cancellations/Postponements of Programs Every once in a while we think we have a great program idea or an instructor has proposed a great program, but the enrollment is insufficient. Staff looks at postponing the program (time to be determined) to see if there is evidence that we think we can get the program to make through other means; and canceling as a last resort. When we cancel, we do our best to notify participants and issue a refund. Program Evaluations Program evaluations will be randomly given to participants or their parents. Evaluations are issued to gauge how programs are received, the instruction or coaching, an assessment on the registration process from the time you get a registration form to making payment and our reflection on you, the facilities we use and your ideas on what we can do to better serve you whether it is in program offerings, staffing or department operations.

YOUTH BASKETBALL
INDOOR YOUTH SOCCER
The youth basketball league will focus on good sportsmanship, teamwork and fair play. Volunteer coaches will teach the fundamentals of basketball. The goal for this program is an opportunity for fun and enjoyment. Practices will begin in December and games will start in January. All home games will be played at county schools on Saturdays and Sundays. Registration for basketball will be October 1st – November 13th. WRESTLING This program is designed to introduce newcomers to the basic skills of wrestling, and further advance those who have participated in the past. START SMART BASKETBALL Start Smart is an instructional and developmental program that enables kids aged 4 -5 years to have a positive sports experience. It is a step-by-step approach that builds selfconfidence while teaching the fundamentals of the games. Youth Sports ISSHINRYU KARATE ISSHINRYU Karate is a traditional form of martial art from Okinawa (the birthplace of Karate). This program is designed for students who are interested in learning a martial art form that places emphasis on quality learning, leading to successful skill mastery, and personal safety. Our program focuses on building strength, balance, coordination and flexibility through Kata (forms), Kobudo (weapons) and their Bunkai (practice applications). This translates in a no nonsense form of efficient self defense techniques that have been proven highly effective. The study of IsshinRyu helps build character, self-esteem, self control, and self-confidence. The instructors Frank Harvey and two time Martial Arts Hall of Fame recipient Kevin Kline each have over a decade of teaching experience. They have trained with some of the world’s foremost experts. Do your children miss school because of allergies? The Community Care Clinic and United Allergy Services offer Allergy Testing & Immunotherapy The testing takes approximately 30 minutes – 15 minutes to administer and 15 minutes to register the results – so you don’t have to wait long to learn the cause of your allergies. Adults and children over the age of 2 years can be tested for allergies. This is especially helpful for patients who suffer with asthma, allergic pneumonia, conjunctivitis (pink eye), undiagnosed cough, dermatitis (skin irritation), insect allergy, rhinitis, sinusitis, urticaria (hives) and angioedema (similar to hives, but beneath the skin).
You will be tested for the most frequent geographically specific mold and airborne allergens in your area. We will test for products from dust mites, proteins from pet hair and dander, trees, grass and weed pollens, molds and cockroach droppings. The test does not detect food allergies. Allergen immunotherapy is a form of treatment aimed at decreasing your sensitivity to substances called allergens. Immunotherapy involves introducing increasing amounts of an allergen to a patient over several months.

Youth programs are those programs whose primary audience is ages 5 – 17. These are non-athletic programs that are offered whose focus is on the arts, culture, physical and structured movement.
Tiny Tots Beginning dance This 30 minute class will consist of beginner level ballet, jazz and tumbling for younger children. Each class children will learn proper technique and placement, stretching and mini routine. Creative Movement In this class children will be introduced to beginning dance steps in a fun, recreational way. King Georgettes Cheer and Dance Program In this class participates will increase flexibility, learn and improve motion and jump technique, as well as stunting abilities and overall coordination. Play It Smart Before and After School Program Packages are available at King George Parks & Recreation. The King George County Parks and Recreation Department and the KG County Schools have teamed up to offer a before and after school program, ages K – 6th. Supervised activities will include games, sports, crafts, fitness and homework assistance. This program will instill character education, fitness and nutrition. A half-hour is designated everyday for homework and reading time. Please pick- up by 6:00 pm. Note: On half days the morning program will be open and the afternoon program will be closed. On holidays both morning and afternoon programs are closed. There will be no program if school is delayed 1 or 2 hours. Like most of our other programs, we take pleasure in offering programs that promote a healthier lifestyle and that are taught by certified instructors.
Tai Chi
Zumba
Tai chi is an optimal exercise for all ages. It involves movements of the entire body without the risk of injury. Done in coordination with one’s concentration and breathing, these movements release tension through the body. The gently flowing progress of movements in tai chi cultivates whole-body health. A study by the Arthritis Foundation supports the many benefits of tai chi, including reduction of pain and inflammation, lowered blood pressure, improved immune function and improved balance and flexibility. This weekly tai chi exercise class will teach simple forms that are easy to learn, but challenging to master. Betty Doran and Linda Kline will lead the weekly sessions. *$25 for students that know the entire Health Form & $50 for all others including new students; drop-ins are $3 per class. New students and continuing students are accepted in this class. New students may drop by any Thursday evening to see the existing class and experience tai chi before committing to the class. Calling all old and new quilters! K.G. Bees quilting group has been finishing some unfinished objects (UFO’s) and meeting once a week this summer to discuss ways to design and make beautiful quilts. Quilting is a relaxing hobby when we learn about fabrics, colors, and designs. There are new colorful fabrics to make into wonderful designs and patterns. We share new ideas and projects. In October we’ll be working on a new project and making seasonal gifts. Come join the fun on Wednesdays 1:30 – 3:30. The class will last four (4) weeks and we need to register with KG Parks and Recreation before class. The first class will explain supplies and patterns. Our Quilting group can always use fabric for community quilts. We look forward to new ideas, projects and people. Come join us. October 11th The 56th Annual Fall Festival begins with the Parade (11a.m.) down Kings Hwy through the courthouse area to the KGHS parking lot. Both sides of the road provide great views of the parade, from the Library to the high school. Park at the middle school and take the bus up to the parade route. Ride a bus (FREE) to the high school. The King George Fall Festival is celebrated at the KG High School parking lot & gym. All activities at the event are free. Food, crafts, and more are available for purchase. Fun for all ages. Live music! 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. There is limited parking at the high school (we need room for all the Floats, Food vendors, Games and more!)

Youth Outdoor Day Our 7th Annual Caledon Natural Area Youth Outdoor Day will be held on Saturday, September 20th from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Activities, games, demonstrations and nature interpretation will keep children and parents in touch with the great outdoors and all it has to offer. Featured events include: K.G.V.F.D. Fire Truck Demo, K-9 Demo, Turkey Calling Demo, Archery Demo and Game Warden, Frank Spuchesi, Canine Demo. Activities include the Patawomeck Indians of Virginia Living History Village & Skills Display, Flint Napping Demo (arrowheads & tools), Dug-out Canoe Building Demo, Hay Rides, Outdoor Photography, and many more! Activities are recommended for children ages 6 – 16. Participants are requested to pre-register by calling between the hours of 9:00am & 4:00 pm. The Tri County/City Soil & Water Conservation District (TCCSWD) has received a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund. The purpose of this grant is to educate citizens on the value, quality and changes occurring to our waterways in general, but with a focus on the Potomac River in particular; and their impacts on the Chesapeake Bay. In partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department, the TCCSWD will be hosting workshops /training opportunities for adults and youth, water quality monitoring and an interactive website starting this Fall. Please keep in touch with the Parks and Recreation Department to learn more. Staff is currently looking at a variety of outdoor programs to better serve outdoor enthusiast. We would be interested in hearing from you the types of outdoor programming you would be interested in seeing our department offer.

Adult Programs Senior Citizens King George AARP – Luncheon and Meeting On the first Mondays of each month, seniors from the area gather to find out issues that are important to them. Members bring a dish to share and enjoy the fellowship, meals and learn what is happening in AARP, local issues effecting seniors and often hear guest speakers. Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging provides a Tuesday – Thursday on-site program at the Citizens Center from 9:00a.m – 1:00p.m. This program offers transportation to and from the Citizens Center, breakfast and lunch, activities and trips. Senior Navigator King George County, in partnership with Senior Navigator, is pleased to provide our mature adult population information services that may assist them, or their caregivers, with information. Currently, the Smoot Library serves as the County’s Senior Navigator Center. Please feel free to stop by and gain access to a wealth of resources. Currently, the County Parks and Recreation staff is looking for ideas from our mature adult community to let us know of activities they would like to see offered.
