King George KEEP'N IT COUNTRY — 56 Years of Tradition Grand Marshals — Aubrey and Brenda Mitchell

File photo

The parade is the highlight of the King George Fall Festival.

Aubrey and Brenda were married in July, 1966, and with the exception of one year, have lived in King George Co. for the past 48 years. Aubrey worked for the VA Dept. of Agriculture & Consumer Services for 30 years. He inspected Grade A dairy farms, trucks that hauled raw milk and ice cream stores. (Hence, his nickname “Milkman”). Brenda taught Family & Consumer Science at KGHS from 1966-1972 and 1984-2002. They have two sons-Stan and Steve. Stan teaches Agriculture and sponsors the FFA at KGHS and his wife Robin is the head of School Counseling at KGHS. Steve (RN) works full time for AirCare-Medevac (emergency medical transport) at Shannon Airport in Fredericksburg. His fiance Allie is an RN in intensive care at MWH. Aubrey was born in Foneswood, VA on the Westmoreland-Richmond County line in 1935. He graduated from Oak Grove High School in 1955 and from VA Tech in 1963, with two tours in the Army in between, the last tour being during the Berlin Crisis 1961-62. He has been a lifelong member of Ephesus Christian Church in Foneswood, with 60 years as a Deacon. He is also a lifetime All-Star 4-H Club member and FFA member. He has been a member of the KG Ruritan Club for 43 years, with 42 years of consecutive perfect attendance. He followed Elwood Mason as the only member to have held every office. He has been a member of the Chesapeake District Cabinet since 1999. Other accomplishments include: starting the Dictionary Project for KG county students-giving one to every 3rd grader, followed by a Thesaurus for all 5th graders and the Atlas for all 6th graders. He received the Tom Downing Award, the highest

award given by the Ruritans and also received the Ruritan Forever Award. Aubrey was instrumental in starting the Veteran’s Day program in KG; served as treasurer of the KG Little League; and is a charter member and on the Board for the Northern Neck Farm Museum. Brenda is from Pocahontas, VA, and graduated from Radford University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree. She is Treasurer of the Woman’s Club of KG, a member of the KG Ruritan Club and the KG Quilting Bees. She attends Ephesus Christian Church with Aubrey. In 1970 she served on the state board to evaluate Buffalo Gap High School to determine whether they met the standards to be accredited by

the Southern Assn. of School and Colleges. Other accomplishments include: nomination to appear in the 8th edition of Who’s Who Among American Teachers; received an award from the KGHS-PTSA in recognition of her outstanding leadership and service to county children and youth; served on the KG Extension Leadership Council; selected as a candidate in GEICO’s Educator for Excellence award and the honor she cherishes the most: receiving the Outstanding Educator Award at KGHS in 1992-93 AND 1993-94, along with the two engraved golden apples that came with the award. Brenda says, “it was wonderful to be able to really teach back in those days.”

E d i t o r ’s N o t e : t h r o u g h t h e organizations the Mitchell’s belong to, they have been able to help children, youth and adults in KG county over the years. There are few that have not been touched by one or the other of this couple. I was at Potomac Elementary when Aubrey was giving out the dictionaries to the 3rd graders. He had each student come to the podium, shake Aubrey’s hand, and then get the dictionary. The wonder and amazement on some of the students was heart warming. The fact they now had a new dictionary of their own was worth every minute. Always ready to lend a helping hand, “Milkman” and Brenda can be found with a smile on their face, and the joy of giving in their hearts.

King George Why is there a King George Fall Festival? The Fall Festival is held annually in King George for county organizations (civic, service, religious, fraternal and others), small businesses, crafters and more to work together for the county and its people. Much has changed in the emergency services throughout the years. What started as a Vol. Fire Dept., added a separate Vol. Rescue Squad, combined the two as

one volunteer dept. and is now a combined volunteer and full-time department. Donations from the Fall Festival committee continue to be essential to ensure a safe and effective EMS/Fire/Rescue system in the county. These donations supplement funding from King George County, federal and state grants, ambulance fees for service, memorials, and other donations. Fall Festival do-

nations provide funding for operational costs, such as uniforms for members and help enable volunteers to maintain the emergency equipment, to purchase firefighting protective gear, pagers, building repairs and other costs. The Fall Festival Committee tries to supply a little extra money for these operational cost. In 1959 KGVFD and Dahlgren Rescue Squad received $500. In

Member FDIC

DEDICATED TO THE COMMUNITIES WE SER9(

1960, they received $650. apiece. So far, over $200,000 in proceeds have been raised and donated to the volunteer Fire and Rescue Departments. All Fire & EMS and Rescue members are forever grateful for the generosity and support of the King George Fall Festival over the years and for its continued support. As the county has grown, so has the Fall Festival. New ideas are sometimes argued against, but in the long run, new ideas and new events can only make the event grow. From an event that was for the good of fire and rescue, has come an event that is for the good of the county. Parking and fair entrance is free. There are food vendors, crafters, small businesses, fun games for kids, live music and best of all a PARADE down mainstreet. (Route 3 through King George). A great day to enjoy the nice weather (held even if it rains), see old friends, make new friends and support our volunteer fire/ rescue/EMS.

community. She has been a constant at county board meetings, local community group meetings and more. She came here after military assignments in the U.S. and overseas and continues to work for veterans’ causes. Leslie, a retired Army captain, graduated from Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia and received her commission from the Army ROTC program at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Leslie was then assigned to the Nuclear Biological Chemical Corps, and also attended the Army Defense Information School, enabling her to serve as a Public Affairs Officer. Leslie deployed to Bosnia in September 2001. While in Bosnia, Leslie developed a blood clot and returned stateside two weeks before the end of her deployment. She was immediately admitted to Walter Reed Army Medical Center and diagnosed with a blood infection, resulting from exposure to a chemical agent or toxin. Ultimately, Leslie lost her left leg and she is now legally blind. Leslie was never discouraged by her losses and forged ahead. Her positive attitude carried over into her work at the USO and the Department of the Navy. Despite her challenges, Leslie is a dedicated advocate for veterans and serves as a Peer Mentor for the Wounded Warrior Project. In 2007, Leslie served as a Wounded Warrior Advocate on the President George W. Bush Commission forAmerica’s Returning Wounded Warriors. The following year, Leslie spoke at the Republican National Convention and proceeded to campaign as a Tier 1 Surrogate across the country for the McCain presidential campaign. She is also an active spokesperson for several organizations including Fatigues to Fabulous, the USO, the Fisher House Foundation, Canines for Veterans, Freedom Alliance, Operation Warrior Wishes, and the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial. Leslie is an Ambassador for the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Travis Manion Foundation. Leslie has shared her inspirational story across the country including the White House, West Point, and Wall Street. She has appeared on both local and national media such as FOX News Live, MSNBC, CBS Talk Philly, News Close Up with Marvin Scott, SNJ Today Celebrating Our Veterans, and the Pentagon Channel. Leslie has been a part of several national campaigns for Fatigues to Fabulous, the Wounded Warrior Project, Canines for Veterans, the Veterans Administration, the USO, the Department of Defense Hiring Heroes program, and Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good.

A History of the King George Fall Festival Yearly, thousands of King George County citizens volunteer and participate in the KG county Fall Festival. This year is the 54th year for the festival. The Fall Festival brings the people of the community together to raise money for the volunteer organization, King George Fire and Rescue, Inc. KGF&R, Inc. used to be two entities: The KG Volunteer Fire Department and the Dahlgren Rescue Squad. These two organizations joined together in

2005-2006 to better coordinate services with the paid fire fighters and rescue personnel. This volunteer organization is made up of members of the community including long time residents, newcomers, and KGHS student volunteers. The KG Fall Festival takes place every year on the second Saturday in October bringing together families, friends and organizations inside and outside of KG county. The Festival includes many activities and exciting events such as the annual parade, FF

Queen contest, 5-k race, dance, local artisans and crafts fair, business fair, and the food vendors. Other community organizations offer goods and foods with most proceeds going back into the Fall Festival. The first official Fall Festival ever held in KG county was on 10-31-1959. The KG Ruritan club first came up with the idea of a festival to raise money for KGVFD. The clubs, associations and people that all joined together to decide to put on the first festival included the KG Ruritans, the Dahlgren

Lions club, the KG Chamber of Commerce and the volunteers of the fire and rescue departments of KG. Ever since then it has been a huge success year after year. A few festivals later, the Ladies Auxiliary of the KGVFD started serving BBQ to the hungry festival participants, volunteers and festival goers. This raised additional funds for the FF to contribute to the KG VFD and Dahlgren Rescue Squad. Over $200,000 has been presented to the volunteer fire and ems department. In the spring of 2002, the Ladies Auxiliary heard about the DECA chapter at KGHS from all of the positive media around the community. At a Fall Festival committee meeting (which is held the 4th Thursday of every month) they asked DECA at KGHS if they would be interested in taking on the BBQ traditions. DECA at KGHS accepted the challenge and was very excited about the project and the opportunity to assist the community in this great fundraiser. The King George Fall Festival is a huge community service project that has been going for five decades. The gestival continues to be a huge community service project and a much looked forward to event by old time residents and newcomers to the county. Proceeds from registration fees, ad sales for the FF program book, auction etc. are presented to the volunteer KGF&R, Inc. at their annual installation and awards dinner These monies supplement county funding, state grants and donations the dept. receives for training, equipment, and day to day operations in order to serve the residents of KG county and surrounding areas. Thanks to David Campbell, Steven Cocke and Kordell Strauss for their contributions into this written history of the King George Fall Festival.

King George King George Fall Festival – One Family’s Chronicle As long as I can remember, the King George Fall Festival has been part of my family! Now, as you are reading this, you are probably thinking, “Mine, too! So let’s compare some memories! Remember watching your first Fall Festival Parade? Standing along Route 3 in the middle of town? We would hang out at the Mason’s house! And remember the first time you rode a float in the parade? I think it was the Chamber of Commerce float for me! How about the bar-b-que

on your 56th Fall F estiv

the privilege of making that sauce and preparing those sandwiches and selling them with a bunch of high school students helping out! It was lots of work, chopping vegetables for the sauce, slicing the beef, making the sandwiches. And then there was the clean up! We did this for almost 10 years! The parade was such a highlight for me – how much candy could we accumulate? How many bands would be in the parade? My dad would work for days on the Chamber of Commerce

float with the other Chamber members. Sometimes he would be the driver of the truck or tractor that pulled the trailer covered in tissue paper flowers stuck in all kinds of chicken wire sculptures that represented the Fall Festival theme. In later years, I would watch my dad drive the bright red Shriner truck in his fez with that tassel flying! Last year, I watched the parade from the corner of Route 3 and Foxes Way for the first time in almost a decade. I was keeping

sandwich and that special sauce? Yummy! And the Queen Pageant was such a beautiful event! So, over my lifetime, I bet I have been to, participated in, and helped out with about 40 Fall Festivals. As a child, I remember my dad helping out with the bar-bque. I found his bar-b-que sauce recipe in one of his cookbooks several years ago and remember him making that. We would eat those sandwiches for days after the festival! For the 2003 Fall Festival, I had

watch for a big tractor pulling a wagon with bales of hay, pumpkins, and flowers. My daughter was on that float as a queen contestant! Back in 1963, my aunt was crowned the Fall Festival Queen! I don’t remember that pageant (although I was alive then), but I do remember the one that was held 50 years later! At the 2013 Fall Festival queen pageant, my daughter was crowned the Fall Festival Queen! So this year, I will again watch

the parade and go to the fair then watch the queen pageant. Someone else will make the food, and there will be lots of choices – maybe even bar-b-que! I will watch over those high school students who have volunteered to help out and look for those students from the past who will show up with their children to come to the King George Fall Festival! Its always a great day to make memories! Submitted by Dee Taylor Strauss

King George Redskins' Marching Band a Fall Festival tradition The King George Fall Festival has been a large part of the community since 1958. The Fall Festival is kicked off with an annual parade every year. The Redskins Marching Band has played an active role in the parade for the past three years. On Saturday, October 12, 2013 will be their fourth year celebrating the Fall Festival with the King George Community. The King George Parks and Recreation Supervisor, Janine Paulsen, was looking to bring big bands and entertainment to the Fall Festival. Janine Paulsen met John White who had been coming to the Citizens Center for many years. She was discussing the possibility of obtaining the Redskins Marching Band for the Fall Festival Parade. Mr. John White chimed in and stated “My son Arthur White has been in the band for over thirty years”. Mr. White is also retired from the President’s Band. Once this conversation took place, Janine Paulsen was on the phone trying to make this happen and Mr. White was arranging transportation for the band. Manager for the band, Toni Cardenas has been one of the key contacts to work out logistics. Janine then made arrangements with the Vice President of NSWC Federal Credit Union, Charles R. Armstrong, to secure funding for the band and ever since,

NSWC Federal Credit Union has been a proud sponsor for the Redskins Marching Band. The Marketing Administrator for the Credit Union, Robin Kuss, assists with coordinating the band for line up and coordinates with Janine Paulsen, who provides lunch for the band. This year Amir Patel, from the Dahlgren Subway will sponsor the lunch for the band. The Redskins Marching Band was established in 1937. The band has since supported all Redskins Football Games as well as performing throughout the local communities. Their membership included professionals from all walks of life. They have close to thirty band directors, teachers, attorneys, one District of Columbia Judge, engineers, college students and members of the military to name a few. Currently the Drum Major is John Carpenter and the Music Director is Eric Summers. You must be at least twenty-one years of age to audition for the band and if accepted, must be prepared for rigorous training every Wednesday night starting in April through the last game of the season. Come on out to the King George Fall Festival and celebrate with The Redskins Marching Band on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Join in with everyone dancing in the streets and at the festival to “Hail the Redskins”. This combined partnership in the community has been wonderful and has been a joy for the community. Thanks again to John and Arthur White local residents for bringing the band to our community.

Buddy Fines

Percy “Buddy” Fines was a long time community activist and outdoors enthusiast. He believed in the youth of the King George Community and tried to instill a code of responsibility and accountability in them. He taught many folks, their kids and their kids gun safety & proper hunting skills. He was on the county’s landowner & hunting advisory committee and used his knowledge to help with guidelines followed today. He was instrumental in Deer Herd hunts at Caledon, coordinated the Annual Disabled Veterans Hunt at Caledon, and the annual Youth Hunt. His humor and wit are legendary. His contributions to the county and surrounding communities too many to count. He was all about giving back to the community and supporting our disabled veterans. It will be very quiet in the woods this hunting season. No more can Bambi say, “Buddy is in the forest.”

leola dennison

Leola was a loyal Fall Festival supporter since its inception in 1959. For more than the first decade or so, the Dennison Family always had a parade entry, usually equestrian. Leola continued to support the Fall Festival by hosting the Hospitality House for dignitaries and queen contestants. There were two annual events standard in Leola’s life, one is Round Hill’s Homecoming the 3rd Sunday in August and the other is the KG Fall Festival, the 2nd Saturday of October. She just didn’t miss those two events. Leola has given her time and energy to the King George Community for many years. The Fall Festival committee was proud to honor her and give her this recognition that she so richly deserved, by selecting her as the Grand Marshal in 2009.

A heartfelt thanks to those we salute “in memoriam” this year. With deep appreciation for the giving of your time and gifts, the committee and King George community says, Thank you for everything you’ve done for the Fall Festival and King George.

How is the FF theme chosen? 2014 KGFF Theme Suggestion Winner

Robert Bradley, Jr.

The Fall Festival theme is selected by the Fall Festival Committee, usually in January. This year suggestion boxes were placed around the county giving the Committee many suggestions to review and vote on. Suggestions were also made through the web site kgfallfestival.com and on the Fall Festival Facebook page. Over 50 suggestions were sent in. The winning theme, Keep’n It Country, was suggested by Robert Bradley Jr. from the suggestion box located in Roma’s Pizza in Dahlgren. Mr. Bradley won 4 seats on the Parade reviewing stand and a local restaurant gift card. Keep an eye out the ďŹ rst of 2015 for your chance to pick the theme for the annual KG Fall Festival. A list of past years’ themes can be found on the website.
