A hospital is the sort of place that can make a person anxious, perhaps fearful. Mary Loretto Krimple, SCN, understands this and helps to ease fears in her ministry as a volunteer at Flaget Memorial Hospital in Bardstown, Ky. She volunteers her time at the information desk and as Eucharistic Minister.
“My heart aches for those in pain. But I’m grateful that I can bring peace and consolation to them. It’s a privilege and a blessing.”
She helps register patients, gathering information and paperwork for the admissions desk. But her ministry goes beyond that. She is a friendly face to those walking into the hospital. She offers a calming presence. She visits the patients in their room and will take communion to those who request it. She often stays with the patient and will pray with them. “Just her voice alone is comforting to the patients. On days when she’s not here, our patients will ask where she is,” said Carol Cothern, director of access for the hospital. Cothern says Sister Mary Loretto truly cares about the patients. “She
Sharing the Journey doesn’t just point someone in the direction they need to go, she will actually escort them to surgery,” she said. Cothern said she has seen Sister interact with many guests and patients and notices that she is especially good with children. She recalled a recent story where Sister reached out to a handicapped child and her mother with love and attention. “She was also so compassionate to the girl’s mother. The mother really appreciated it,” she said. The connection Sister Mary Loretto has with children probably goes back to her 34 years teaching first graders in schools throughout Kentucky and Tennessee. She began in the healthcare field when she returned home to Paducah, Ky., to help her Dad take care of her mentally
Mary Louise Bailey, a cashier/dietary aide in the hospital’s cafeteria, notes that Sister Mary Loretto is a hard worker who is always friendly and helpful. “She’s a pleasure to me. You can see the service she provides and the happiness on the patients’ faces,” Bailey said. Her volunteer time is also a blessing to the employees of Flaget. “She always brings a smile to my face,” Bailey said. “Not only is she good for patients, she is here for staff in difficult times,” said Cothern. Cothern remembers a time when a staff member was very upset with problems at home. Sister talked with her and offered to pray for her. “I don’t think she (Sister Mary Loretto) realized how much that meant to her,” said Cothern. Sister said sometimes it’s hard to see the patients who are suffering. “My heart aches for those in pain. But I’m grateful that I can bring peace and consolation to them. It’s a privilege and a blessing,” said Sister Mary Loretto.

Home of Love and Care in Botswana Since 2004, SCNs Vinaya Chalil and Nalini Meachariyall have cared for more than 500 people who are infected with HIV/AIDS in Botswana, Africa. The two run holistic care programs in Mmopane, Metsimothlabe, Tsolamosese and Mogoditshane. The program focuses on the physical, mental, spiritual, emotional and social well being of their patients. While in the grips of battling AIDS, many people struggle at home for access to nutrition, medication and care. In response to this reality, the Diocese of Gaborone is constructing a ten-bed hospice, which aims to provide high quality palliative care and support to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. The hospice will be named “Pabalelong” – Home of Love and Care. As there is no facility of this kind in the entire country, this will be a pioneering institution.
SCNs Nalini Meachariyall and Vinaya Chalil minister to persons with HIV/AIDS.
The construction of the hospice began in April 2008 and should be completed by early 2009. The facility is slated to be operational by June 2009. Sisters Vinaya and Nalini will administer and manage the center and together with Father Tony Robello, SVD, will also meet the spiritual needs of the sick. During a visit to Nazareth this summer, Sister Nalini shared stories of the struggle of individuals and families she has worked with closely. She has counseled people contemplating suicide upon learning of an AIDS diagnosis and comforted individuals moments before death. In all of this, she and the other Sisters of Charity of Nazareth ministering in Botswana share a message of love and hope. Sister Nalini humbly said that “a drop of love, compassion and kindness has made a difference for many and has transformed many lives.” Pabalelong will provide one more way to offer compassionate care. The construction of Pabalelong is nearing completion.

SCN MINISTRY BLOSSOMS IN LAS FLORES
Paschal Maria Fernicola, SCN
Two children in the day care program compare their day’s lessons.
Families living in Las Flores, Belize will soon have a library and computer center thanks to the tireless efforts of the Las Flores community and the SCN Congregation. The Sisters opened a mission in Las Flores in August 2006. Las Flores is a community of mostly Spanish speaking refugees who fled from El Salvador during the war years of the 1970s and 1980s. Shortly after they moved to Las Flores, the Sisters helped the village leaders conduct a census and survey to help determine the needs and priorities of the villagers. Two needs rose to the top: a day care and a community library. Together with the village leaders, the SCNs are working to make these dreams a reality.
reports that “everyone is so proud and happy, and genuinely surprised that the community’s dream for a library has finally come true, with lots of hard work and generous help from so many!” Carlette Gentle, SCN, began a day care center which is growing. Sister Paschal recently wrote that 18 children “are doing very well and are learning English, the colors, the letters and numbers, shapes and songs, and having one glorious time — and so is Sister Carlette!” The day care also allows mothers some freedom to pursue income-generating activities. Sister Carlette holds Friday afternoon cooking classes for the women of the village. Regarding a sewing group, Sister Paschal reports, “ I’m excited about the women in the sewing group because they are learning to make their own patterns and are eager to learn a lot more that will help them sell their work. They are willing to donate money and materials - the little they can - to help the group get on its feet. The 25 or so of them are eager, creative and hard workers!”

A Memorable Thanksgiving Holiday Volunteers travel to Mexico last year in the Juarez area, which is near Anapra. Amidst this immense hardship is the Santo Nino Project, a clinic for children with special health care needs and a community education and support center for the families of these children. Sister Luke says the women, who have little money to buy Christmas trees or holiday decorations, were excited to be making banners because it would give them some way to decorate their houses for the holidays which in turn would delight their children. Meanwhile, the men in the group built a closet and storage shelves for the center. The group also helped repair the home of a woman in Horizon City, Texas. SCNs Reach Out to Flood Victims Outreach efforts continue in Northern India, as flood victims rebuild their lives. Though the floodwaters from the Kosi River have receded, a path of destruction has been left behind. Since August, many have fallen victim to flood related illnesses. Early flood reports estimated that more than 2,000 people were killed, 227,000 homes were destroyed, nearly 250,000 acres of vegetables, wheat, and paddy crops were damaged, and over a million people have been displaced.
Among the victims affected by the flooding – children. These children approached the volunteers, curious to meet them.
SCNs from ministries across India have traveled to the North to help the victims. The relief and rehabilitation work needed has been massive according to Roselyn Karakattu, SCN, who is a member of the Bihar Social Forum, which is comprised of the five dioceses in Bihar. The Bihar Social Forum sent medicines and other supplies to Shapur. SCNs Basanti Lakra and Archana Valiaparambil worked from Shapur to give assistance. Sisters have provided medical care, social services, distribution of food and clothing, as well as an outpouring of comforting words. Much of the relief work has taken place in collaboration with other organizations. In mid-September, Medicines Sans Frontiers (MSF) – ‘Doctors without Borders’ from Holland began lending their assistance to the flood victims in Gwalpara Block. SCNs experienced in flood relief and disaster management were on hand to collaborate with the MSF Team. Sisters provided immunization and other medical assistance to 30

The family came to the Navjyoti dispensary in late September. They were struggling to cope with their loss. I met Munshi Hansda, his wife Sumi and her daughter Lata, a student of Navjyoti School … their house is still in knee deep water. They live now with their relatives. Sumi looked very sad. Sumi and Munshi had lost their 14- year-old daughter Sabita in the floodwaters on the fateful day of August 23. Sabita was an exstudent of our School, Navjyoti. Sumi had come with her husband and a daughter to ask for some help to have a second funeral service for Sabita. Sumi narrated the story of how she lost her daughter. The family lived in a lowlying area in the village. When the floodwaters entered their house, with their belongings, they climbed up on a “machan,” a bamboo platform inside their house. The next day they moved to a higher place, on the bank of a canal with many others who took shelter there. By 10 a.m. the government had arranged a boat to pick up the stranded population and move them to a camp. When the boat arrived, the people rushed to get a place in the boat … including the Hansda family. In the rush and push, the boat capsized. Sabita was one of the two unfortunate children who went under the boat and was found only a couple of hours later. Sabita’s body was found some distance away from the accident, stuck by the root of a tree. Since there was no place for the Hansda family to bury their first born, they dug a small pit on the bank of the canal and buried her in the same dress she was wearing… Sumi came over this morning seeking some help from the Sisters. Sumi wants to give her daughter a proper burial and go through all the ceremonies connected with a burial so that Sabita’s soul may rest in peace. This means making a new set of clothes for Sabita which will be put on an effigy of Sabita, made from straw. A funeral procession will be held and the relatives and neighbors who attend the funeral will be fed.
If you would like to help with the flood relief effort, please contact Leslie Wilson at 502-348-1551 or visit www. scnfamily.org
The Sisters, moved with compassion for the family, helped with plans for a second funeral. They gave Sumi rice, dal (pulses) and money to buy clothes for the effigy of Sabita. Volunteers traveled by boat to help flood victims who were unreachable otherwise.

December 1, 2008 – Foundation Day for the SCN Congregation was highlighted in a powerful way this year at Nazareth Hospital in Mokama, India. As part of the day’s activities, every effort was made to create awareness among the public and to motivate them about the growing health needs with regards to HIV/AIDs and the urgency to control and prevent the spread of the disease. Sisters, Associates, and other members of the SCN family wore red ribbons, a symbol of solidarity to those infected and affected by the disease. Dozens of people participated in the event including representatives of leading political parties, government officials, doctors and residents from the surrounding areas. They came together with about 100 people living with HIV/AIDS and their families. Nazareth Hospital, Mokama, India, offers a holistic The day included a number of performances and cultural dances. Training classes were also offered to caregivers. The day came to an end with the screening of “Phir Milenge,” which depicts the discrimination and alienation of a woman with HIV … a stigma that World AIDS Day hopes to eradicate.
In Nazareth, Ky., the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth celebrated the beginnings of the Community with a Foundation Day prayer service on Dec. 1, 2008, at St. Vincent Church. The prayer service included a reflection around the early days of the SCN Community and the many hardships the Sisters overcame. The service also touched upon how the Vincentian Sisters of Charity of Pittsburgh came to be founded and how the two Congregations are now one. Each reading of the prayer service was followed by a moment of quiet reflection by the Sisters and Associates. Those in attendance were asked what the foremothers’ prayers may have been during the founding days, months and years.

Left, Celeste Reedy, SCN, presents a reading. Above, Sisters discuss their relationship with each other and God. “Risk is of the essence of the integrated spiritual life … Risk is not brazen talk by warm fire on a dark night. No, it requires insecurity. Risk demands the bold bet on the desirable but unsure thing. Risk is faith unbounded by reason. Risk walks with God as its only sure companion … Risk energizes, enervates, drives adrenaline through the bloodstream of a group, makes life worth living again.” The Fire In These Ashes, Joan Chittister, OSB
Taizé Prayer services are now taking place at St. Vincent Church in Nazareth, Ky., once a month. The non-denominational service is open to the public. SCNs Luke Boiarski and Nancy Gerth host the prayer service to provide a method to build an awareness of God’s presence. “Taizé is one way we can get together to contemplate the heart of God,” says Sister Luke. Taizé Prayer services have a rich history. In 1940, a Swiss 25-year-old man, Brother Roger, came to the village of Taizé in southern France. He started an ecumenical community for contemplation and the reconciliation of Christians of all faiths. Today over 100,000 young people from around the world make pilgrimages to Taizé each year for prayer, Bible study, and shared communal work. The service is based around a single symbol, which is used as a focal point for attendees. Where other prayer services have a back and forth rhythm through readings and responsorials, Taizé takes a more individualistic approach. Much of the service is silent contemplation with no defined beginning or end. The songs of the service are simple with repeated refrains to help center oneself and enter into the contemplation of the presence of God. In the music and prayer of Taizé many different languages are used to reflect the international nature of the community.
Taizé Prayer service is held at St. Vincent Church on the Nazareth campus every second Sunday of the month at 7 p.m. The service lasts approximately one hour.
The use of candlelight, silence and scripture with simple chants, helps build an awareness of God’s presence in ourselves and community. Sister Nancy describes Taizé as “a means for people to get away from all of the modern distractions that fill their lives.”
About 150 people gathered in St. Vincent Church on Oct. 12, 2008, for the Sixth Annual Nelson County Interfaith Service of Peace and Justice, the second to be held at the Nazareth, Ky., church. The program included presenters from several faiths and organizations. Three of the speakers reflected upon the memories of: Mahatma Gandhi honored by Teresa Kotturan, SCN; Martin Luther King, Jr., honored by Harry Pickens, Peacemaker, Composer and Jazz Musician; and Thomas Merton honored by Br. Paul Quenon, OCSO, Monk of the Abbey of Gethsemane, Poet and Photographer. Gandhi, King and Merton spent their lives striving for peace and understanding among people of all faith traditions. Speakers from many faith traditions came together to share with one another in October at St. Vincent Church, Nazareth, Ky. Teresa Kotturan, SCN Vice President, reflected upon the life of Mahatma Gandhi.

Becoming ONE The SCN family grows
November 15, 2008, will long be remembered as an historic day for the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. On that fall day, 109 Vincentian Sisters of Charity transferred their vows, becoming Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The ceremony was the culmination of years of dialogue, discernment and discussion between the SCNs from Nazareth, Ky., and the VSCs from Pittsburgh, Pa. Hundreds of Sisters, Associates, and friends gathered in the Chapel in Pittsburgh to take part in the Eucharistic Celebration of the Transfer of Vows. The day was rich in symbolism as portraits of both Mother Catherine Spalding (foundress of the SCNs) and Mother Emerentiana Handlovits (foundress of the VSCs), were carried in during the entrance procession

Most Reverend David A. Zubik, DD, recounted the histories of both Congregations, and how each while carrying out their ministries, have always had a willingness to open their arms wide in the example of Jesus. “How broad must be the smile of Christ upon us this day, how broad must be the smile of Vincent de Paul, how broad must be the smile of Louise de Marillac, how broad must be the smile of Mother Catherine, how broad must be the smile of Mother Emerentiana, and how broad the smile will be on the faces of all those people yet to be served by you in the name of Christ and with the virtue of charity.”
together also strengthens the bond of the world-wide Vincentian family.” The Pittsburgh Sisters currently serve in the dioceses of Cleveland and Steubenville, Ohio; Madison, Wis.; Montgomery, Ala.; Venice, Fla.; St. Catherine, Ontario, Canada; and Greensburg and Pittsburgh, Pa. The SCNs have ministries in the United States, India, Nepal, Central America, and Africa. Since 2001, the Vincentian Sisters of Charity had been exploring possibilities for the future with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. In 2008, the governing bodies of both Congregations unanimously voted in support of becoming one Congregation. The necessary documents were sent to Rome and a Decree of Merger was received from the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
Calling the name of each of the Pittsburgh Sisters, President Mary Elizabeth Miller, SCN, invited each one to recite vows as Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The mood in the chapel, described by many as “electric,” became even more palpable as Leadership gathered before the altar to welcome each new SCN with hugs and to present each Sister with a copy of the SCN Constitutions and an SCN pin.
Theresa Novak, President of Vincentian Collaborative Services (VCS), recently shared her thoughts about becoming an SCN with the readers of the VCS publication, Insights. “The question might be asked, ‘Why did the Vincentian Sisters of Charity of Pittsburgh make the decision to merge with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth?’ As Vincentian Sisters, our numbers were decreasing and the Sisters wanted to insure that the charism and mission of St. Vincent and St. Louise begun here in Western Pennsylvania in 1902 would continue. The important issue in the life of any Congregation is that the Mission and Charism continue into the next generations. The ministries that we do are necessary and vital to the life of people in the world and in the Church. So, today, we are Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The ministry of Vincentian Collaborative System will continue and we will maintain our name of Vincentian in the Ministry. Our Mission and purpose have not changed. Our history of serving children, the elderly and sick continues and the charism of Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac lives on.”
Sisters from around the world felt connected to the celebration as they watched the service on their computers via live webcast. At Nazareth, nearly 60 Sisters gathered in St. Vincent Church to view the celebration. When the Pittsburgh Sisters took vows as SCNs, the Sisters at Nazareth stood up to renew their vows. Western Province Vice-Provincial Brenda Gonzales, SCN, describes the November weekend as an exciting time because people were able not only to connect via the Internet but also faceto-face. Among the dozens of Sisters who traveled to Pittsburgh from around the world for the Mass, were two busloads of SCNs from Nazareth. Sisters in Pittsburgh eagerly waited outside St. Louise Convent to greet the Sisters from Kentucky, and when the buses began pulling up, the crowd erupted in cheers and applause. The weekend was also an emotional time. Sister Kelly O’Mahony, one of the Pittsburgh Sisters who transferred her vows, experienced a range of emotions including excitement about the future. “Through the Sisters of Charity Federation, I’ve known of the SCNs since my initial formation in the VSC Congregation, but I never imagined that I would some day be one with them. It’s awesome to know I share in the heritage of the SCN pioneer spirit. Having met SCNs from India and Belize and to know them now as ‘my Sister’ deepens and broadens my concern for women around the world who are my Sisters in Christ. Our coming
Teresa Kotturan, SCN Vice President, shares a smile with the Pittsburgh Sisters.
Sister Brenda echoes Sister Theresa and says this is one of the trends in religious life today. “It is out of necessity and a calling to be better stewards of our resources,” says Sister Brenda. “We have finite resources and personnel. By joining together we focus on what is important – ministries and mission. By coming together we can do more.”

in Dunbar, Pennsylvania Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (formerly Vincentian Sisters of Charity) in collaboration with the Daughters of Charity, and Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill are remarkable women of faith and integrity as they minister to and with the poor, marginalized and the underserved in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. They operate Rendu Services in Dunbar, Pennsylvania, which has been in operation for nine years. Their services include: operating a mobile health van, administering a parish nursing program, hosting a monthly food bank, and working with the Housing Authority to minister to families and children.
Above: SCNs Kitty Wilson, Alice O’Connell, Sarah Grier and Betty Vannucci were present for the volunteers appreciation reception at Rendu Services
Rendu Services is named after Sister Rosalie Rendu, a French Daughter of Charity born in 1787. Sister Rosalie dedicated her life to God and served God in the poor in Paris. For over 50 years, she worked untiringly through poverty, revolution, crime, plague and famine to aid and to better the lives of men, women and children. SCNs Betty Vannucci and Kitty Wilson visited with their Pittsburgh Sisters and were impressed with their energy and self-giving as they help the people have a better life. At the volunteer appreciation gathering, the volunteers voiced their love and respect for the Pittsburgh Sisters, and the Sisters voiced the same for the volunteers. One of the highlights of Sister Betty and Kitty’s visit, the day the Food Bank staff members distributed supplies to approximately 100 families who came to the Center on a snowy morning. It was an experience Sisters Kitty and Betty describe as truly inspiring.

he Pittsburgh Sisters trace their roots to a small band of pioneer Sisters who emigrated to the United States from Szatmar, Austria-Hungary, at the request of a parish priest in Braddock, Pennsylvania. These five Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul (later known as the Vincentian Sisters of Charity and now known as Sisters of Charity of Nazareth) were dedicated to teaching and ministering to the sick. Their mission in 1902: to minister to the enormous numbers of recent Slovak immigrants. The work of the Sisters encompasses many ministries. They taught in parochial schools, began Vincentian High School and became established in institutional nursing service. Current ministries include: Vincentian Academy and Vincentian Child Development Center as well as Villa de Marillac, Regency Hall Nursing Home and Adult Day Care, Vincentian Home, and Marian Manor, which are under the umbrella of Vincentian Collaborative System. Among the people actively working as a part of Rendu Services are Sarah Grier, SCN, RN, Alice O’Connell, SCN, LPN, and Annette Frey, SC, Gerontologist. These three women along with student nurses and retired volunteers take a mobile health van to 20 sites in Fayette County every month. The van is fully equipped for non-invasive medical services and provides a variety of health care screening services to those in need in an effort to heighten health awareness. Mary Fran Bassick, DC, Director of Rendu Services and Nancy Cassidy, DC, initiate activities for children and adults at the Fayette County Housing Authority. Children’s activities include afternoon school programs, homework help, educational and recreational games, and computer usage. Activities for adults are also offered - computer-based education, information and referral, and arts and crafts. Families enjoy movie nights, cook-outs, parties, a community garden, and health promotion programs. Rendu Services partners with St. Vincent de Paul Store in Uniontown. Ann Horvat, SCN, Program Director and Ellen McElroy, DC, Case Manager assist in case management and basic needs assessment. They offer a variety of solutions to emergency situations. Denise Diephrich, SC, volunteers to teach computer skills to adults twice a week. Roy Sarver, Director of St. Vincent de Paul Store is dearly loved by staff and volunteers as they work together to meet immediate needs of the poor in the area. Our Lady of Nazareth Academy to Close
Our Lady of Nazareth Academy (OLN), a Catholic college preparatory high school for young women, faced with the reality of the current economic downturn will close at the end of the 2008-09 academic year. Sister of Charity of Nazareth Rose Howard, Director of Congregational Ministries, made the announcement the last week of January to faculty, parents, and students, expressing deep regret at the closing.
The decision by SCN, Inc., to close the Academy was based on the school’s low enrollment and decreased tuition revenue, increased operating costs, and lack of sufficient capital to improve antiquated facilities. “Nazareth Academy’s 13-member local advisory board has worked tirelessly to improve the school’s financial picture, including recruiting a dynamic principal and stepping up student recruitment and marketing efforts,” said Sister Rose. “So it is with heavy hearts that we have made the decision to close this ministry.” “We know how devastating this news is for the young women who have been entrusted to our care and their families, as well as our 36-member faculty and staff, and thousands of alumnae and friends,” said OLN Board Chair and alumna Sheila M. Doherty. “Our priority right now is to develop a comprehensive transition plan for each student and make the next five months of the school year the best experience it can be for all involved…” OLN leaders have reached out to area schools enlisting their help and support. Special meetings are being held with students and parents by class to aid them in planning their transition. Located in Wakefield, Mass., 10 miles northeast of Boston, OLN draws approximately 165 students from 30 cities and towns, from lower Merrimack Valley to Cape Ann. Her Spirit Lives “Her Spirit Lives, A Sketch of the Life of Catherine Spalding,” written by Margaret Maria Coon, SCN, has now been transcribed into Braille. The book, an introduction into the life of Mother Catherine and the Congregation, is a powerful account of Catherine Spalding’s character. The publication has been used as one of the texts in Religion classes at Our Lady of Nazareth Academy in Wakefield, Mass. The Braille transcript of the book came about because of one of the Academy’s students. Katherine Moss is the first blind student to attend Our Lady of Nazareth Academy. As a sophomore in the
Now in Braille classroom of Mary Assumpta Dwyer, SCN, part of the curriculum included that students read from “Her Spirit Lives.” With the help of her long-time mentor, Theresa Gilman and the use of equipment at Perkins School for the Blind, the book was transcribed into Braille for Katherine to use in the classroom. Now Sister Margaret Maria’s highly praised book resides in special company. According to Perkins, only 500 to 600 new Braille books are transcribed every year, accounting for a mere one percent of all books published. A copy of the Braille version, transcribed by Theresa Gilman, is being kept in the archives on Nazareth Campus, Nazareth, Ky.

Henry& Henrietta
A couple of Nazareth Village residents have created quite a stir recently. The Village residents of Nazareth, Ky., are known as a close community with men and women from all walks of life … but this fall two residents in particular kept getting noticed, bride and groom “Henry and Henrietta.” The two began popping up in October, in the most unexpected places, elevators, potluck dinners, on hayrides and even sitting high up in the branches of trees. After Village residents and visitors began noticing the odd couple, they set out each day trying to find where the couple might be. Before long residents were having photos taken with the couple and the duo even had their fifteen minutes of fame. When an article appeared in The Kentucky Standard, they even received fan mail; a card wishing them well in their new home at Nazareth.
So here’s what makes them different from other Nazareth residents, they’re not your average couple, they’re not even real, that is in flesh and blood. But instead they are made from wire hangers and filled with paper. Henry wears his signature blue overalls and cap, Henrietta is dressed in white. Michelle Jones, an assistant administrator at Nazareth Villages, created the couple to put a smile on people’s faces during the Halloween season and to generate some excitement around the Villages. She never expected that the couple would become so popular, even attracting sightseers. “Eventually, Henry and Henrietta became residents themselves,” Michelle says. Michelle says the couple is on an extended vacation but may return next October.
Russell Hall Members of the SCN Family Sisters, Associates, and Time Capsule –employees, gathered in the Motherhouse Dining Room in Nazareth, Ky., last November to take a trip back in time. Many were anxious to glimpse the contents of a time capsule recently discovered on Nazareth campus. The time capsule was found in the cornerstone of Russell Hall. The building was recently deconstructed after being found to be structurally unsound. Many of the items in the time capsule date back to 1965, the year in which the cornerstone was laid. President Mary Elizabeth Miller, SCN, opened the box as the Sisters surrounding her began to recall memories of time spent inside the building.
John F. Kennedy, a Kennedy half-dollar medallion, and an invitation to the Russell Hall opening reception.
Among the many dust covered discoveries in the time capsule was a picture of Mother Catherine Spalding, the foundress of the Congregation. There was also an American flag, a copy of The Record from August 12, 1965, a copy of The Courier-Journal from August 15, 1965, a copy of The Kentucky Standard, August 12, 1965, a copy of Response magazine, a list of church delegates and community houses, a photograph of President
Russell Hall Update: The land once home to Russell Hall will soon be dotted with a variety of plantings. Now that Russell Hall building has now been taken completely down, three zones of green space are being developed. The first zone will be a mowed area with trees and shrubs. The second will be a thicker area of trees and shrubs and the third zone will be a wildscape area.

A Lasting Tribute The Lourdes shrine, a favorite place for reflection on Nazareth campus, has a new look these days. The shrine has been undergoing a process of renewal and enhancement in the last several months…and surrounding the shrine, Mary’s Garden has come to life. Mary’s Garden, a tribute to Mary Acquin Spalding Schneider from her husband and children, was dedicated on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008. Family and friends gathered for the blessing of the garden and shared reflections and hopes for this special space. The Schneider family contacted Nazareth with the desire to dedicate a garden to their mother as a lasting gift to honor her. After considering several locations on campus, they decided to renew and enhance the Lourdes shrine. The Lourdes shrine was originally dedicated on April 7, 1902, on the Feast of the Annunciation and on the occasion of the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Mother Mary Cleophas Mills, SCN. The garden design includes benches and stations to pray the mysteries of the rosary. Mary’s son, Jim Schneider explains, “The idea started as children watching our parents honor each other and their devotion to faith and to the rosary. The rosary was a huge part of our lives.” Jim remembered that his mother would say a rosary when one of the children was moving, going off to school, or recovering from a romantic heartbreak. He explains that they “wanted to honor our mom in a way that represented what she’s brought to us … we want mom to be remembered forever.”
Mary Schneider spoke to the crowd gathered for the dedication and said, “So often when someone is honored or especially loved, they’re already dead and gone … and it is a wonderful thing that that is done. But you can’t imagine how much happier I am to be here in person to share in this marvelous experience and to have a part of something so wonderful that’s here to stay forever. I’m alive and well and can see the gift and be very happy with what has been created here.” Carol Rogers, SCN, director of Nazareth Campus Services, worked alongside the family and other key employees in moving this project forward. She reflected, “We’ve watched this garden grow into this spot of beauty … a place where we have seen people come to pray, for comfort, for rest, and to be renewed.” Mary’s Garden is located in the heart of the Nazareth campus, near the intersection of Main Street and West Drive. The garden is open to the public for prayer and reflection. Mary Acquin Spalding leads the rosary during the dedication service.

E
ighty-six SCN Associates and SCNs attended the 13th Annual SCN Associate Retreat at Nazareth, Ky., the weekend of September 26-28, 2008. Mary Ellen Doyle, SCN, facilitated the retreat with the theme “Enter the Heart of Mother Catherine Spalding.”
SCN Associates are men and women of all faiths and backgrounds who commit: • To living out the SCN Mission in their own lives • To deepen their spirituality • To build community with other SCN Associates and SCNs • To reach out in compassionate service to others in the tradition of Vincent de Paul, Louise de Marillac and Catherine Spalding. During the weekend, four candidates made an initial two-year commitment as SCN Associates and 34 Associates renewed their commitments. Below are profiles of the four individuals who made their first commitment as SCN Associates during the September weekend. PAULA DUANE (Louisville, Ky.) works at Assumption High School as a teacher and bookstore manager; both keep her in touch with all of the students, which she says is her greatest ministry. She also reaches out in compassionate service to others in the Vincentian tradition every time she sees someone in need. Paula has had a strong connection with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth for many years and in the last two years has enjoyed building community with the Associates also. She is a very spiritual and prayerful person who reflects daily on the Gospel message and tries to live out the Gospel values. Paula continues to try to live a life of simplicity, humility and charity. JUDITH MARTIN (Louisville, Ky.) is committed to the values and charisms of the SCNs and loves to serve others, especially in the medical field where she is a registered nurse and an advocate for holistic health. Judith reaches out to the poor and also cancer patients who are with Hospice. As an SCN Associate she will continue to face life’s daily challenges with simple acts of kindness and prayers extended to all. She looks forward to building community with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and fellow Associates by becoming more involved in helping those in need with God as her center.
CAROL WRIGHT (Coxs Creek, Ky.) is very active in her parish; and also attends daily Mass at Nazareth. She is involved in the Vincentian tradition by serving the poor at the Schuhmann Center in Lousville and for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Carol feels she has been touched by the SCNs and wants to give back to the community. Carol loves coming to the SCN Associate formation weekends because it gives her the opportunity to connect with other Associates and Sisters.
CAROLYN SHIRCLIFFE (Louisville, Ky.) loves the SCN Associate weekends and plans to attend the on-going formation weekends in the future. Carolyn volunteers weekly at Nazareth Home. She also works with elderly in her parish, Our Lady of Lourdes. Carolyn stays aware of social justice issues through prayer and action when needed. She also loves to write. Carolyn aspires to grow in the charisms of simplicity, humility and charity.

Vie has been recognized for her “tireless work not only personally addressing the needs of the poor and the oppressed, but her encouragement of others to do the same.” She is acknowledged as “an outstanding Colorado leader championing the cause of those too often without a voice. She not only voices her concern for the disenfranchised, but actively puts herself in position to effect personal and systemic change.”
In celebration of the Bicentennial of the Daughters of Charity and in keeping with Elizabeth Seton’s commitment to education, particularly the most needy, the SCN Congregation is joining other Federation Congregations in sponsoring two or three scholarships to the Coady Institute of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. This institute offers a certificate program in communitybased micro-financing for individuals, particularly from developing countries. The program will train women in the art of micro-financing for the promotion of women so they can return to their countries and train others. The Western Province Leadership team would like to thank Rosemarie Chase, SCN, for her five years as Pastoral Administrator of St. Vincent Church, Nazareth, Ky. Sarah Ferriell, SCN, has been asked to add the Pastoral Administrator responsibilities to her position as Chaplain for the Nazareth Campus.

What is your Legacy ? Consider being part of the SCN Family mission. Remembering the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in your estate plans The SCN Legacy Society was formed to recognize and express gratitude to individuals who have chosen to be part of SCN ministry beyond their lifetime by including the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in their estate plans. “We receive so many generous gifts of support throughout the year,” explains Patsy O’Toole, SCNA, Director of Congregational Advancement. “It is especially touching when we receive notification that someone has named the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in their estate plans. That act is a statement about the relationship of the donor to this Congregation. Whatever the amount, a gift of this sort enables an individual to remain connected to vital ministries even when he/she is no longer alive.”
For the Sisters, it is a joy to be able to say thank you to someone for this intention while that person is still living. When someone notifies the Congregation that he/she has named the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in their estate plans, the person is welcomed as a member of the SCN Legacy Society. Sixty-four individuals are currently members and are remembered in a special liturgy each year. Some ways to include SCNs in an estate plan include naming the SCN Congregation as a beneficiary in: • • • •
a will a life insurance policy retirement plan, or charitable trust.
If you are giving some thought to your estate plan and would like some helpful information, please contact Leslie Wilson, Director of Development, at 502-348-1551 or lwilson@ scnazarethky.org. If you have already remembered the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in your will or estate plans, please let us know as we would welcome the opportunity to express our appreciation to you.

THE SCN FAMILY
Because of you … 2008 has been a year of celebration, successes, and growth for the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Members of our SCN family have generously supported our ministries in many ways – through volunteering, helping to fundraise, and donations. Among the reasons to celebrate this year, the success of the historic General Assembly, the first to take place in India. Another momentous occasion for the Congregation, the merging of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity Congregation into the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth bringing our family of vowed Sisters and Associates to more than 700. And who can forget the wonderful success of the Nazareth Picnic in August. Another reason to celebrate - the growth of the SCN Volunteer Immersion Program. Thank you for the many ways you help… and as always, we extend an invitation to you to continue to help by sharing the stories of the many ways members of our SCN family – Sisters, Associates, donors, alumni, employees, volunteers and so many others make a difference. Please send your stories to scn@scnazarethky.org.

THE SCN FAMILY Community Economic Development Investments The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (SCN) believe that SCN Charism can be lived out in many compassionate and caring ways across the globe when we reach out to those who are poor and marginalized. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” In an effort to collaborate with others to extend our reach to those who are poor and marginalized, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth invest in community development banks, credit unions, revolving loan funds, and housing cooperatives. We also work through financial institutions that make loans to individuals and groups, many of whom would not qualify for a commercial bank loan. These are called Community Economic Development Investments (CEDIs). CEDIs mobilize investment capital into local organizations to build affordable homes, finance small and micro businesses, and to fund community development facilities. Community Economic Development Investments: • • • • • • •
Provide opportunity for community control or local self determination Create alternative approaches (such as worker cooperatives) for the production of goods and services Focus on women for employment, management and ownership Empower low income people to create, manage and own enterprises Reinvest in decaying urban areas or revitalized rural areas Demonstrate a stewardship approach to land, water, air and other resources Contribute toward integration such as racial, urban/rural, inner city/suburbs
• • • • • • • •

Over the years, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have made Community Economic Development Investments in a number of organizations around the world including: Headquartered Blackfeet National Bank Montana Greater Boston Interfaith Organization Massachusetts Human/Economic Appalachian Development Kentucky Louisville Community Development Bank Kentucky Mercy Housing, Inc. Colorado Nehemiah Project Tennessee Partners for the Common Good Washington, D.C. Shared Interest, Inc. (invests in South Africa) New York

Among the programs changing lives in Botswana, Africa, a sewing center for the women in a remote, poor village of Kanye named Tswaaneng. Pat Huitt, SCN, dreamed of the sewing center convinced that it would help women to help themselves and their children. Now that the dream is a reality, many women come to the center each week eager to have access to sewing machines, material, and training.

Marilyn Milburn has been a warm and welcoming presence on Nazareth campus since 2002. A receptionist, she is the first to greet folks when they enter O’Connell Hall. She can often be spotted giving directions, holding the door for folks as they carry in items, or answering phone calls. Marilyn’s smile is contagious and she is always quick to ask you, “how are you,” and is genuinely interested in hearing your answer. She is part of the SCN family and one of dozens of employees carrying out a ministry in their everyday work.

THE SCN FAMILY
Volunteers, like members of the Nabholz family, travelled to Belize to help build a house for a woman and her three children. This was the second year in a row that Nabholz family members chose to spend their vacation changing the lives of others. They were part of the SCN Volunteer Immersion Program. Among the projects changing lives this year, the building of a water tank in Nepal. Cecilia Simick, SCN, describes the urgent need for the tank. Among many other places we surveyed, this place needed immediate help. The well is quite deep as you can see the man measuring the depth, it is in such a dangerous place, people and animals have fallen in it. We had a meeting with the people three times and all have agreed to contribute their help to build this water tank properly so that the whole village will get safe drinking water. The Sisters in Nepal are awaiting word that the work can begin on the tank. We’ll have more on this story in a later issue of The Journey.

Bridget Kappalumakal, SCN, serves as director of the newly-establish Eastern Province Development office. In this role, she travels throughout India sharing the stories of SCNs in ministry and invites others to support these efforts. She has met with graduates from the Mokama School of Nursing, family members and students in SCN schools. Sister Bridget was especially touched this year by one young girl in an SCN school who approached her following a presentation on SCN ministries. The young girl reached out to Sister Bridget and handed her 100 rupees. The young girl asked Sister Bridget to use the money to help someone who has less than she does. Sister Bridget was very moved by the student and her donation especially since the young girl herself likely struggles to support her own basic needs and yet she gave so that others might be helped.

Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
