On a gorgeous New York City summer day last year, I was visiting the United Nations for the first time and came across this stunning sculpture: two giant shiny bronze balls, one contained within the other, with the larger sphere ripped apart displaying large jagged edges. At first glance, I thought it to be a large cracked egg, a round one with an embryo about to be born. Then I saw that it was a globe, our world, changing and breaking wide open with a new and emerging one within it; a world broken apart by terrorism and climate change, suffering yet yearning to give birth to a more harmonious and just world for future generations. What a beautiful image of a global quest to build a new world wherein all people can live peacefully and in freedom, committing to bring God’s justice and healing to our broken world, one day at a time! Doesn’t this new year invite us to do just that — to fashion a new world of love, harmony and peace, finding God in this broken world? This issue of “The Journey” breaks open some wonderful stories of love made real. It reminds us of how love was made real by Catherine Spalding who walked the streets of Louisville, Kentucky, caring for the orphans and sick, and how her actions impacted the descendants of the orphans she rescued. It demonstrates how her Sisters and other members of the SCN Family continue to live her dream in Belize and Botswana, Mississippi and Memphis, in India and other places. The stories reveal how ordinary people doing extraordinary things bring about dignity, freedom, hope and peace for so many of our sisters and brothers around the world. These examples of goodness help us to imagine what an abundance of love would be generated if each of us dared to truly love all those whom we meet in this world. In my reading recently I came across these words of Pedro Arrupe, SJ, from the book “Finding God in All Things.” This prayer speaks volumes to me about the illuminating power of love: “What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evenings, how you will spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love and it will decide everything.” I thank each of you, our collaborators and benefactors, for daring to be that love, peace, and reconciliation made real. Through your support of our SCN life and ministries, you have been transforming the world, one person at a time, day by day, making God’s dream for the world come alive for those less fortunate and striving to birth the new world that is truly God’s dream for all of us. Blessings on all that we can do together in 2016!

A Ministry of Compassionate Care Mississippi Healing “Have you been feeling okay?” “How much do you have?” “Are you out?” “A bottle lasts you 12 days?” Paula Merrill, SCN, asks these questions of Evette, one of her patients at Lexington Medical Clinic in rural Mississippi.

Cotton crops dot the landscape along the highway on the way to the town where Sister Paula is in ministry. She is part of a team of people providing much needed health care.
Paula Merrill, SCN, examines a patient and discusses medication. Sister Paula sees patients in Holmes County, Mississippi.
Located in central Mississippi, this clinic offers health care to all ages. In 2014, the clinic provided nearly 8,000 patient visits. The socioeconomic needs are great. Approximately 40 percent of the patients are uninsured or have only Medicaid, 41 percent of the county’s population lives in poverty, and 62 percent of those living in poverty are children. “Deep breaths, in and out,” she says to Evette while listening with her stethoscope. As she continues with her examination of Evette, Sister Paula reminds her to take her medications and encourages her to get a flu shot. Evette says she can’t afford the flu shot but maybe she’ll come back for it. Sister Paula won’t let her out of it that easily, saying, “Why, why not today? We have the flu shot here at no cost. It was donated.” And with that, her patient agrees to the shot.
3
Evette’s mother, Eva, had to have her leg amputated at the knee due to diabetic complications. Sister Paula takes her time with Evette, and her mother Eva who has joined her for today’s exam. She answers questions and gives medical advice. She listens to their concerns.
Willie Paul has been a patient of Sister Paula’s for 12 years. He has seen an improvement in his health and counts Sister Paula as a dear friend.
“That’s part of the training. That you listen,” Sister Paula says. Sister Paula has served in health care ministry in Mississippi for over 30 years. She has served at this particular health clinic as a nurse practitioner since 2010. “I’ve been a nurse forever.”
Sister Paula talks to Evette about her blood pressure and gives her some grief about her sugar levels. She sees many cases of diabetes and high blood pressure.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, Sister Paula moved to the South as a second-year novice with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Her landscape changed to include the green, climbing, beautiful but invasive kudzu and acres of cotton fields that look like snow. She had to get used to the thick heat that lasts until December. But she felt a connection and a need to serve the people. She has been there ever since.
“I couldn’t resist the snacks at work,” Evette explains.
“I don’t know why,” she says. “Why move again?” she laughs.

Sister Paula’s patients range in age from young children to the elderly. This young boy patiently reads a book while being examined.
At the clinic, Sister Paula serves both children and adults. As much as her ministry serves the people medically, Sister Paula also spends time helping people in other ways. “We do more social work than medicine sometimes,” she explains. “Sometimes patients are looking for a counselor.” A headache brought Jacobi, age 4, to see Sister Paula. She checks his ears, asking his mother about his symptoms. She asks about his medications and listens to his heart and lungs. She notes no infection and diagnoses the boy with a cold. Her peaceful demeanor keeps the child calm and relaxed and he smiles as he tells her about his favorite cartoon characters. Sister Paula shares the bulk of the clinic’s caseload with Margaret Held, OSF, who is also a nurse practitioner. Every other week, the doctor on staff, Dr. Abboud, visits patients at the clinic. Dr. Abboud is very appreciative of the care both Sister Paula and Sister Margaret give to their patients. “Paula is great. She is thorough
and aggressive,” he says. “They help the patients so thoroughly. That’s the compassionate way to do medicine. They go the extra mile. No doubt about that.”
One of many picturesque towns in Mississippi, all around there are reminders of both beauty and poverty.
Willie Paul, a local farm worker, has known Sister Paula for 12 years. He started out as her patient and over the years, the two have become friends. Sister Paula has helped him become a healthier person. He says he’s not sure he’d be alive today without Sister Paula’s advice and encouragement. “She’s great. She’s an honest person. I can’t look for a better doctor. I’m telling you the truth. My friends would say the same thing.”
PRAY FOR SCN MISSIONS Please remember the intentions of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in your daily prayers. Pray for them and for their needs in missions around the world.

SCNs Rebecca Miles and Frances Krumpelman unveil a historical marker at the location of the former St. Vincent Orphanage and Infirmary in Kentucky.
HISTORICAL MARKER UNVEILED Catherine’s Legacy Continues On the quiet corner of Jefferson and Wenzel streets stands a new historical marker, a reminder of what once stood on that same block more than a century ago, the St. Vincent Orphanage and Infirmary. The ministry was located near downtown Louisville, Kentucky, from 1836–1891.
5
More than 100 people turned out for the Oct. 4 marker unveiling including Judge Sara Combs. She is a descendant of a child who was cared for by the Sisters, Annie Keo, whose name can be found listed in the 1860 census for the orphanage. Judge Combs is a distinguished and accomplished

legal mind. She is an appellate judge in Kentucky and the wife of the late Kentucky Governor Bert Combs. Judge Combs shared that in the mid1800s her great-grandmother traveled up the river to Louisville from New Orleans, along with her sister, after

their parents died from diphtheria. The two girls, ages 9 and 7, were taken in by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The younger girl would soon die from yellow fever. The older sister, Annie, would grow into adulthood, and would marry becoming Mrs. Higgins. There would be much happiness but also more tragedy as well. When she was pregnant with her fifth child, her young husband died suddenly, leaving her to raise five children alone. All of the children grew to adulthood and became some of the most distinguished citizens of the day. Recalling her great-grandmother Higgins, Judge Combs, shared that she had been told much about this amazing woman. “She was a soft spoken, firm-handed lady, and I know that she was molded by what
happened on this sacred ground, and sacred it is.” Judge Combs then recited a quote from “Schindler’s List,” “‘When you save one person, you save a world’ … I am part of the world that the Sisters saved, but for Annie Keo, who knows what would have happened to any of us who followed … I am very, very grateful for their good work.” In the 1800s, there was little education for girls, no private health care, and no organized social services. Mother Catherine committed herself to addressing these needs. In Louisville, she and three SCNs opened Presentation Academy in 1831 to educate young girls. The following year, when cholera struck, the Sisters volunteered to nurse the sick. During this time, many children were
left orphaned, so the Sisters cared for these children in their own small house. Within three years, river boats and urban disease brought enough orphans to require purchase of a larger building, St. Vincent Orphanage. It had a long wing in which the Sisters could also open St. Vincent Infirmary. In reflecting on the orphanage and the new marker, Judge Combs described the marker as not just a reminder of what happened at Jefferson and Wenzel, but rather as a manifesto for all who pass and see it, “to go and do likewise, do your good deeds in whatever way you can, in whatever sphere of life you are called to serve.”

HUNDREDS JOIN THE JOURNEY Luncheon offers glimpses of donor impact Through choked emotions, Ronnie Mattingly, a lay mission volunteer, told the crowd of 400 people what it means to him to volunteer with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. “If you go through the disaster relief program, in training, they’ll tell you to be the light of the world. I’m here to tell you, I’ve been several places with this lady right here (pointing to Luke Boiarski, SCN). In the day and time we have now, I’m proud to be part of that light of the world.” Over the course of the next hour, attendees heard inspiring stories of transformation at the third annual Join the Journey luncheon, held at the Crowne Plaza in Louisville, Kentucky, on Nov. 18, 2015. Susan Gatz, SCN president, led a “tour” of the world-wide ministries of the Congregation. Paschal Maria Fernicola, SCN, introduced Catalina, a Mayan women in Belize, who by video described how the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth helped her family through a difficult domestic situation. Through tears, Corinne Bulick, from Barton, Ohio, expressed gratitude for the Sisters and volunteers who helped with repairs on her home. In response, donors joined the journey of the SCNs by offering financial support to sustain these ministries. The luncheon offers donors a glimpse into the impact their gifts make in the lives of individuals. In a follow-up note to Leslie Wilson, director of development, one attendee commented, “I’ve never been in a room filled with so much love.”

TOWER AWARDS 20 Years of Recognizing Outstanding Women Leaders Susan Gatz, SCN president, received the Tower Award for Education during the 20th Annual Tower Awards of Presentation Academy on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015. A graduate of the Presentation Class of 1965, Sister Susan says, “One of the great gifts that Pres gave me was nurturing my vocation to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. I entered right after graduation and stepped into a community of women who have allowed and challenged me to embrace an even bigger world.” In her early years as a Sister, she served as a teacher at Presentation Academy. In addition to her years in education, Sister Susan has worked in youth ministry, pastoral ministry, lay ministry development and various leadership roles within the SCN Congregation. The Tower Awards is an annual mission-driven event honoring women leaders in their fields, and highlighting the contributions and talents of these role models to Presentation Academy students and the Louisville community. In her remarks, Sister Susan addressed the students who were present, “Looking back on my Pres life and trying to glean some words of wisdom … I would say, pay close attention to those around you, who they are, where they are from, what, in our fascinating world, captures their heart and stirs their energy. Ask questions. Be curious. That, I think, will assure that you are a life-long learner, that your world will be ever intriguing and that your creativity will rise up.” “As the president of Presentation Academy and a Sister of Charity of Nazareth, I was especially honored and proud to present the 20th annual Tower Award for women leaders in education to Sister Susan Gatz, president of the SCN Congregation and a 1965 alumna of the academy,” says Christine Beckett, SCN. “Susan exemplifies her leadership in many ways to our students, Congregation, and the various communities in which she has and now serves.” Other 2015 Tower Award recipients include Gaetene Jean-Marie, Ph.D., Rebecca Matheny, Kathleen Quinn Abernathy, Toni Ganzel, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.S., Maria Price and The Queen’s Daughters, Inc.

R eligious Education in Belize On a spring day in San Antonio, Belize, a group of teachers gather on their day off to discuss the sacraments, and how to teach them to the students who fill their classrooms. The teachers are working towards completing four courses, Vatican II, scripture, sacramental theology, and religious education teaching methods, to be better prepared in their own classrooms.
Guidance for teachers Chris Kunze, SCN, leads the discussion inside the San Antonio classroom. She teaches this basic certification in religious education, a program through the Diocese of Belize City-Belmopan for teachers and lay ministers. Sister Chris has lived and ministered in this Belize village for the past two years. Mainly, she ministers to the people of this area through her medical home visits and home-based “porch clinic” where village residents visit her for a medical checkup.
The need for ongoing Catholic formation Belize has a Catholic-Public School system, where every school teacher teaches religion. On the weekend, Sister Chris helps some of these teachers from the Toledo District deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith. Without the course, ongoing faith development education for teachers and lay ministers in the area would be lacking.

Maggie Cooper, SCN, in Belize City, Belize, introduced the Loyola University Institute for Ministry Extension (LIMEX) program in this region, of which Sister Chris is a graduate. The program is rooted in academic study, with theological reflection on ministerial practice, and lived adult experience as people of faith. “I have been revitalized and empowered … the knowledge gained is a source of strength in the classroom and in life,” is how one of the teachers in the program described his experience. A Lasting Way to Honor a Loved One In October, 12 members of St. John Francis Regis Church, in Hollywood, Maryland, traveled to Belize and built a home for a family in need. Rosa, who now owns the house, and her three children, are forever changed by the generosity of strangers and the close friendships that quickly developed.
The St. John’s Bill Schaefer House This was the second house built in Belize by a team from St. John’s, and the “St. John’s Bill Schaefer House,” was named for a member of the 2014 Team who died just a few months after helping with the first home. After being commissioned at a Vigil Mass, the team began their journey south in the wee hours the next morning. For the first two days, the volunteers drove through flooded streets to get to the site and worked long days in the rain. A truckload of sand had to be delivered in order to make the muddy yard navigable. Wednesday morning, the sun appeared, and the pine boards dried sufficiently to paint. By Thursday afternoon, the roof was in place, the bathroom was plumbed, all the windows were in and the doors were hung. On Friday morning, after touching up paint, cleaning, and packing up tools, the builders participated in a
house blessing and turned over the keys to Rosa. The experience was an emotional and touching one for all involved, says Bill’s wife, Laverne. “I can only describe this mission trip as ‘bittersweet.’ This was my second mission trip to Belize. My husband, Bill, and I made our first mission trip in January 2014. Shortly after our return home, Bill passed away unexpectedly. Our Parish, St. John Frances Regis Parish, in Hollywood, Maryland, decided to do a second mission build in Belize in his honor. Thus, you can identify perhaps with my emotions in returning to Belize without Bill and the emotional roller coaster I experienced … I felt we were predestined by God to build for them (Rosa). all of us. Bill would have loved knowing he helped her and those kids — he was always so involved with kids and sports. I feel a forever bond with Rosa and her family and am so grateful that we truly made a difference in her and the children’s lives.” Rosa worked alongside the Maryland Team every step of the way as the house came together. She was joined by family members, neighbors, and an individual who had already received her own home through the “Building for Change” program. This was the 271st home built in Belize as part of this unique program.

Commitment to Education Across the globe, in Botswana, Africa, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth continue their worldwide commitment to education ministry, with a program at St. Mary’s English Medium Preschool. Recently, the ministry in Botswana was in need of a short-term volunteer. Lorena Fleischmann, SCN, without hesitation, accepted the invitation to God’s call. For Sister Lorena, preparing children to become lifelong learners has always been near to her heart. Until her retirement in 2014, Sister Lorena’s teaching career kept her close to her home in Kentucky where she taught for nearly 40 years. In November 2015, Sister Lorena traveled to Botswana eager to minister to children in another part of the world. Sister Lorena’s love of teaching made saying, “yes” to this new adventure easy. Immediately, she fell in love with the kids. “The little students are fun and loving, just like the ones back home.” And when some of the children were having a tough
time adjusting to the new environment of school, Sister Lorena offered a reassuring presence. “I would just hold them, wipe their tears away, whisper to them how beautiful they are, and how much Jesus loves them. Within seconds they stopped crying,” shares Sister Lorena. “I’m not sure they understood my English, but I know they feel my love.”
Sister Lorena a glimpse of the obstacles these young students face each day. With their enthusiasm for learning, the students remind Sister Lorena and others that there is much for which to give thanks. “This has been a whole new experience for me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity, even though there have been some hard times.”
Sister Lorena is inspired by the preschool, which is located in an area where educational opportunities during these formative years are limited. At the core of the school, is a holistic learning experience based on three core values — love, care and trust. God experiences, through prayer and nature appreciation, give students opportunities to grow in their commitment to care for the earth. Each student’s individual gifts are nurtured through sports, arts, music and cultural activities.
One of Sister Lorena’s more memorable experiences was preschool graduation. On Nov. 21, 2015, 26 children, confident and ready to face the world of primary education, lined up to graduate. Classes took turns on stage, singing songs, performing skits, and reciting quotes. Each student then received a certificate. Recalls Sister Lorena, “The air was filled with excitement and joy, with lots of families and guests present. It truly was a wonderful, special day for all!”
Ministering to these students has been eye-opening for Sister Lorena. Witnessing, and at times experiencing, the socioeconomic and environmental hardships that are part of the everyday lives of the people of Botswana, is giving
As Sister Lorena returns to the United States, her experiences in this beautiful country will undoubtedly be a cherished time of her life, a life dedicated to service.

SCN Associate Karen Schmitt, left, and her friend, Lindsey, share a life changing journey.
A Transformed Life Associate and advocate on human trafficking SCN Associate Karen Schmitt says she never gave much thought to human trafficking. “It just hadn’t touched my life or the life of anyone I knew,” she says. Karen heard a trafficking survivor speak of her experience and how easily she was lured. After that, she decided to volunteer with a residential program for women in recovery, and those who had been involved in prostitution. “I felt perhaps 13
the Spirit was trying to tell me something, so I listened,” she says.
Branded for life
The Lisieux Community, a residential program in Memphis, Tennessee, opened its doors in August of 2014. Karen says it is horrifying to hear of things the women there have endured. Karen drives the women to medical and counseling appointments. She takes them grocery shopping every week. “And the meetings, lots of meetings … at those I am ‘cool aunt Karen’ who they can tell things to in confidence,” she says.
Lindsey comes from a broken, abusive home. She bounced around for years, spending time with different family members in different parts of the country. There was no stability. As a teenager, she turned to alcohol and drugs. She felt abandoned, alone, and unloved.
One of the young women, Lindsey, who is only using her first name for this story, has allowed Karen to share about her life in hopes of helping others.
SIS TERS OF CHARIT Y OF NA Z ARE TH • VOL . I 2016
She was easy prey for any predator. At age 20, she met a man she thought was her boyfriend - he became her pimp. “It’s very easy to get a girl when she’s hooked,” Lindsey explains. He would soon have his name “branded” on her leg in the form of a tattoo, signifying to all on the streets that she is his property. S C N FA M I LY.O R G
TATTOO SYMBOLIZES FREEDOM FOR SURVIVOR
This rose tattoo covers a previous tattoo which was the name of Lindsey’s pimp.
“Did she willingly submit to the tattoo? Yes. Did she have a choice? No. She was forced — no matter how you spin it,” says Karen. A victim of human trafficking, Lindsey was caught in a cycle of prostitution and addiction. The cycle continued until her mom had her arrested. “It was the best thing she did for me,” Lindsey reflects. After spending three months in jail, she overdosed and was admitted to a mental hospital and rehabilitation facility for 46 days. Finally, her healing began.
The turning point With the help of her case manager, Lindsey found her way to the Lisieux Community. Today, she is working to mend relationships with those she has hurt, and those who have hurt her. After a chance run-in with her former pimp, she was able to bring closure to that painful chapter in her life. She was no longer powerless, no longer a victim. The tattoo of her former pimp’s name was a constant source of embarrassment and negative feelings for Lindsey. Karen wanted to help. So Karen did the research. She made an appointment with a tattoo artist and learned Lindsey could have the tattoo of her pimp’s name covered with a rose. Normally the cost would be $250, but given the circumstances, the caring artist would only charge half. Karen planned to pay for it herself, but at an SCN Associate weekend, Sisters and Associates donated enough money to cover the full cost. Lindsey’s wish, of freeing herself from the harsh reminder of a pimp’s power over her, became a reality. She is beyond happy with her beautiful rose tattoo, “I was so excited that it didn’t even hurt!” There was a time when Lindsey never thought about her future. She struggled to get through each day. She thought she had no chance of doing anything great with her life. Now, she has dreams. She is enrolled in classes and is determined to become a nurse. Karen is just thankful to journey with such strong young women like Lindsey. “It amazes me to experience these transformations. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for the women of the Lisieux Community, and to a time when human trafficking is eradicated,” shares Karen.

RETURN OF A PRODIGAL STUDENT Beating the odds An undergraduate student of Kolhan University, in Chaibasa, India, 27-yearold Poonam Degan is beating the odds to become an educated woman with a promising career. She has come far, despite her challenging upbringing in a remote village in Jharkhand, India. Poonam was abandoned by her mother when she was in second grade. A victim of domestic violence, her mother fled, leaving behind her children. Her father, an alcoholic, was unreliable and abusive. Poonam was left to raise two younger brothers. After completing daily chores, Poonam would make her way to school, walking a distance to attend classes. She was a student of St. Xavier’s Middle School, run by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Juggling care of the house, her siblings, and studies, Poonam struggled to stay in school. She eventually fell in love with a classmate. As a young teenager, she quit school, and eloped. She had two children. Poonam’s life became even more of a struggle. Both her husband and motherin-law treated her badly. Poonam, like her own mother, felt she had few options. She fled her circumstances, leaving behind
small children. Trying to survive on her own, she found construction work and a place to rent. Tragedy continued to follow her. She lost her father in 2008, and spiraled into a cycle of loneliness and despair. She was 20, without a home or family. In 2009, after a seven-year gap, Poonam wondered if she might return to her old school. It was the only thing that kept her going. Poonam recalled how as a student, she had experienced the nurturing care of the Sisters. She trusted that the Sisters would stand with her.
Help from the Sisters Poonam asked to meet with SCN Saleth Mary, her former principal. She expressed the desire to continue her studies. The SCNs welcomed her and enrolled her as a private student in class X, the equivalent of being a sophomore in high school. They arranged for a place for her to stay and coaching classes. Poonam excelled in her matriculation, and moved into her Senior year. While finishing high school, she jumped at the chance to support herself in a job with the Sisters. She also received skills training at Mahila Kalyan

Kendra, the SCN social work center, and took steps to be reunited with her two children. After completing her high school studies, the Sisters encouraged Poonam to apply for an office assistant position in a private firm. With the Sister’s ongoing support, Poonam next pursued admission to college. This amazing young woman continues to thrive. She has overcome much. She is now awakened and dares to dream. She is an inspiration for other village girls. Proof of what is possible. It is not unusual for girls from such socioeconomic backgrounds in the village to face similar challenges and limited life choices. When Poonam graduates from her current studies, she plans to pursue further professional development to ensure an even brighter future for herself and her family.

A MINISTRY OF WORDS For over three years, Julie Driscoll, SCN, traveled from her home in Louisville, Kentucky, to Nazareth to do research in the Archival Center for a book she had been asked to write. She poured over records, and photos, and created extensive outlines. Sometimes, Sister Julie would spend a few nights at Nazareth when she couldn’t tear herself away from the research. It was a labor of love, a ministry call, to help preserve Congregational history. Day after day was spent reading letters, reviewing files, delving into SCN ministries from 1960 to 1972, and becoming even more immersed in the history of Mother Lucille Russell. “I enjoyed learning more about this period of time,” says Sister Julie. “It was a time of significant challenges, and changes, given Vatican II.” Elaine McCarron, SCN, meanwhile, moved from Maryland to Kentucky, to join Sister Julie and other SCNs, as part of the team helping to create a series of books about the Congregation’s ministries in the last century. She brought with her a great deal of experience as a writer. Among the projects she had been involved in, writing the religious education curriculum entitled “Becoming Disciples,” for elementary school children. After returning to Nazareth, Sister Elaine worked on the Congregational book series, side by side with SCNs Patricia Kelley and Rachel Willett. A photo of both Sisters sits next to Sister Elaine’s computer, as she talks about the collaboration with great joy.
Several Sisters and Associates have been involved in the writing of a book series that covers the second century of the Congregation.
Both Sisters Julie and Elaine have found their latest ministry, one of researching and writing about SCN ministries and leaders, both challenging and fulfilling. The SCN book series, a multi-volume history, covers the second century of the Congregation’s life and ministry. Each volume focuses on a different twelve-year period. Many SCNs have come together to research and write the book series including SCNs Julie, Elaine, Patricia, and Rachel, as well as Sisters Frances Krumpelman, Maria Vincent Brocato, Mary Ellen Doyle, and others. While individual books in the series are being researched and written, members of the Publications Committee review chapters as a team and suggest edits. Members have included SCNs Mary Serra Goethals, Maureen Coughlin, Margaret Rodericks, Susan Kilb, and Mary Medley Bonn and Kathleen Lyons. The first book in the series came out just before the Congregation began its bicentennial year in 2012. “Impelled by the Love of Christ: The Life and Ministry of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth 1912–1924” focuses on Mother General Rose Meagher’s term. The book covers the period of time from 1912 to 1924, one of change for the United States with World War I, the flu epidemic, and women’s suffrage among major events facing Americans. The series came about because there were histories on the first century of the
Congregation but none on the second. The Rev. Clyde Crews, an Archdiocese of Louisville historian, who has reviewed books in the series, notes that, “There’s a really generous use of historic photographs … sometimes you don’t get that in these histories.” He further says that the series is carefully written and engaging, giving the reader a sense of the Sisters’ personalities. Adding that the series will do more than record the SCNs story. “This whole series will be a significant event for the telling of American Catholic history at large.” The most recent book in this series focuses on ministries in Nepal, and was written by Anne Marie Thayilchirayil, SCN, with Teresa Kotturan, SCN, as editor. Soon a seventh book will be released, more on the book’s publication date in a future issue of The Journey.
READ THE SERIES These books are available at the Visitor Center at the Motherhouse, in Nazareth, Kentucky. scnfamily.org/visit
