Vincentian Academy Looks Toward the Future Vincentian Academy is looking toward the future as the Senior class of 2010 prepares to graduate, the 78th class to graduate since the school’s founding in 1932. Located on the beautiful 67- acre campus in McCandless Township just north of Pittsburgh, Pa., the Academy offers a learning environment that has received international acclaim. Graduates can be found around the world in leadership roles. The school, rooted in the values of Catholic faith, places an emphasis on excellence and service and has a very gifted and committed staff. Among those teaching in the classroom are members of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Congregation (formerly Vincentian Sisters of Charity). The Sisters are very much a presence throughout the Academy and on the rolling campus. Camille Panich, SCN, is principal, Tonya Severin, SCN, teaches biology, Antoinette Kostelnik, SCN, is an instructor in religion, and Raynita Kristofco, SCN, works in administration.

and work ethic. Service and concern for others — values that are mainstays of the Vincentian Academy culture — also form an important foundation for building character. Vincentian students volunteer over 5,800 hours of service annually. With a desire to continue its rich history and sterling reputation, the Academy has stood strong for nearly eight decades thanks to the willingness of its founders to allow the Academy to evolve and change in order to respond to the needs of the times. Vincentian High School was founded by the Vincentian Sisters of Charity in 1932 as, “A private, independent, Catholic boarding school for girls.” In the 1960s, the suburbs began to engulf the land surrounding the grounds and for a time the school continued to grow. In the early 1970s, the Sisters closed the boarding facility and began admitting boys to the school. The high school began to face the same daunting problem that surfaced with other Catholic schools of that era, most notably the decline of young women entering religious life. This meant there was no longer an abundant work force that taught for low wages. Each year more “lay” teachers were hired to replace retiring Sisters, and with this reality came the necessity to increase

The Vincentian Sisters of Charity entered into a 5-year partnership with Duquesne University in 1995 for administrative support services. Early in the partnership, the Duquesne faculty advised on the development of the International Baccalaureate Degree Program (IB) as its core curriculum. The partnership agreement was renewed in 2001 for a 10-year period. The fifteen year partnership with the goals of further strengthening and growing the school, has been deemed a success, and is now coming to an end. Recently officials announced that the Vincentian Academy-Duquesne University Partnership would conclude at the end of the school year. Effective July 1, 2010, Vincentian Academy will resume full responsibility for its operations.

now looking toward the future. “Duquesne has helped strengthen the Academy and position it for long-term success,” says Sister Camille. “Our enrollment increased 52 percent this year, our International Baccalaureate exam results exceed national and international averages, and our students continue to maintain a 100 percent college acceptance rate.” So as the 2009–2010 school year comes to an end, the Academy now gears up to welcome a new class of freshman. Parents and students are invited to learn more about the top-notch facility and its founders, the Sisters, women who have educated countless children and cared for thousands of families throughout the area.

Although Vincentian Academy will no longer receive the administrative oversight provided in the current partnership, Duquesne University will work with the school to continue other benefits to the students. “Vincentian Academy will continue to have a strong relationship with Duquesne to foster the IB program and academic excellence that has been achieved during the current partnership,” says Sister Camille. With gratitude that the purpose of the partnership has been achieved, the Sisters are

Presentation Academy A new chapter in the history of arts programs and athletic teams at Presentation Academy has begun. A 10,000 square feet, state-of-the-art, and architecturally heralded Arts & Athletic Center at the corner of Fourth and Breckinridge, in Louisville, Ky., is now open. Marking the first major construction at Presentation since 1948, the new structure features a 700 seat gymnasium, an athletic conditioning area, a theater that seats 300, studio space for the dance and visual arts programs, and offices for the athletic, art and physical education/health departments. The center, which opened in September of 2009, replaces the original Presentation gym built in 1938. The playing court in the new athletic center is named in honor of Ms. Vivian Dunlevy, who passed away in April of last year. She was the esteemed coach and physical education instructor at Presentation for 39 years.

The facility was designed to be a versatile space. Chairs can be set for theater-in-the-round or an open stage. Function and flexibility are the key attributes at this welcomed and refreshing new building in the historic downtown neighborhood. Presentation President Chris Beckett, SCN, says that public response to the building’s design and offerings has been enthusiastic. “The academic building has withstood many a moment in Louisville,” says Sister Chris. “The new building makes her look even more grand.”

Art with Heart Students Use Creativity to Change Lives in Botswana Students in one Kentucky town are changing the lives of children on the other side of the world. Thanks to the efforts of students and staff at St. Aloysius School in Peewee Valley, Ky., two children will receive an education in Botswana, Africa. The donations were raised at the annual Christmas concert and art show. The evening offered an opportunity for students and family members to gather and celebrate the Christmas season in a very special way. In addition to the beauty of the music and artwork on display, LEFT TO RIGHT — Susan Beer, music teacher; Maryann Hayslip, principal; Theresa participants chose to connect with the children Beaumont, SCNA, art teacher. Maryann has been very supportive of this effort and in Botswana through donations collected that Susan has been gracious to include an art show with the Christmas concert at St. evening. For the past three years, St. Aloysius Aloysius. School has supported ministries of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. This year, as last year, their financial support will help needy students at the Boiteko Daycare Center. Theresa Beaumont, an art teacher at the school, helped to make the connection with Nazareth. Theresa is an SCN Associate, and she became friends with Tootsie Gish, also an SCN Associate, and director of the Boiteko Daycare Center. Wanting to inspire her students to reach out to students in Botswana, Theresa shared the story of the five loaves and two fishes with her class. “It seemed to me that a modern parallel would be how far our small change and small dollar bills can go in countries where a very little goes a very long way. … In some sense, it is the miracles of the fishes and loaves. We just have to give.” Theresa believes that this event touches on innate gifts of children — the gift of music and art, and the gift of goodness and generosity. “Our work as teachers is to sustain and to encourage and to appreciate this as children here, who are comparatively wealthy in a very material world, struggle with these values.” SCN Director of Development, Leslie Wilson, attended the event. She shared briefly about the work of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and pointed out that proceeds from the donations will support the annual tuition for two students for an entire year at the daycare center. “So many schools have been generous in offering support to SCN ministries,” remarks Leslie. “This is a tremendous way for students to feel connected with children who live in dramatically different circumstances. It’s a true lesson for life.”

Las Flores Park Gets a New Start A run-down and ramshackle playground is being transformed thanks to the hard work of the youth of Las Flores, Belize. Heading up the project, Carlette Gentle, SCN, a young Belizean Sister who has changed a lot of lives in just a handful of years. Sister Carlette works with the youth group called “SALT” which stands for “Sharing and Learning Together.” One of Sister Carlette’s hopes is to instill the youth with a sense of civic responsibility. The children have overwhelmed her with their response and enthusiasm as evidenced by their latest project — the renovation of the park in their village.

The youth of “SALT” have grand plans for the future but they know it will be a long haul before they are finished. They plan to do some landscaping and also hope to build a stage so that the park can be used for variety shows and performances. Eventually, they will add benches and picnic tables. All of this is made possible in large part through a grant from Catholic Health Initiatives in support of building healthy communities. Sister Carlette acknowledges, “We still have a long way to go, but little by little we are getting there.” Already, their hard work provides families in the village with a safe place to relax together.

“The park came about from the youth group wanting to give back something to the village,” explains Sister Carlette. The park has been neglected and had become a hang out for those drinking alcohol. After receiving permission from the city council in Belmopan to renovate the park, Sister Carlette and the youth quickly went to work. They started by spending an entire day chopping weeds with a machete because the park was so overgrown. Despite countless blisters, the group then began to construct equipment where children could play. To date, with the help of adults in the village, group members have put up a monkey bar, two seesaws and a small play house with two slides. Sister Carlette says the youth were so excited when they saw the slide going up, they began playing on it before it was completed. Sister Carlette was touched when one little girl ran up to her to say, “because of you we have a park.”

Carlette Gentle, SCN, center, pictured in this 2009 preschool graduation photo, works with children of all ages in Las Flores. Most recently she worked with the youth group known as “SALT (Sharing and Learning Together)” to transform a ramshackle and run-down park into a safe place for kids to play.

A Home of Her Own Elizabeth and her two children now have a home of their own thanks to the work of SCN volunteers who recently travelled to Belize. The 10 volunteers, led by Luke Boiarski, SCN, spent eight days in Belize City building a house for the family of three. Each day family members would come to the work site, and each day says Sister Luke, they became more and more involved with working alongside the volunteers to build the house. With a laugh she adds, even the family’s pet, which at first was wary of the strangers, warmed up to the volunteers as the days passed. Sister Luke says it’s as if the pet knew something good was happening for its family. And as the home neared completion, Elizabeth was so excited, she worked around the clock to get the trim painted before the house was blessed. The family was presented with house warming gifts and a key to the home at the blessing. The volunteers, participants in the SCN Lay Mission program, were in Belize from Jan. 25 through Feb. 2. This the one of many houses built by participants in this program, a partnership with Hand and Hand Ministries to provide shelter for the poorest of the poor in Belize. When talking about the families who now have homes thanks to the groups’ efforts, Sister Luke reflects, “What impresses me the most is how these people survive in desperate situations in the poorest areas of Belize.” One of the more touching moments during the trip, was when volunteers Father Jim Graf and J.C. Detheridge reunited with the owner of a home they built last year in Belize. The homeowner, Sandra, started crying when she saw Father Jim and J.C. “It’s about building relationships not just building a home,” emphasizes Sister Luke. Just a few short days later, another group of volunteers travelled to Belize, this time to Las Flores, where they helped build a home for a family of eight. Volunteers also made repairs to another facility and tutored students in the local school. The 13 volunteers were in Las Flores Feb. 8 through Feb. 15. There will be more on this touching experience in a future issue of The Journey. leanor Martin, SCN, was inducted into the Archbishop Williams High School (AWHS) First Annual Hall of Fame in October 2009. A native of Boston, Mass., and a 1963 AWHS graduate, Sister Eleanor received her degree in Social Work from Spalding University in Louisville, Ky., and went on to graduate from Boston Law School. She was the first SCN to become an attorney. Sister Eleanor has served in many roles such as providing legal assistance to the poor in Massachusetts and Kentucky and as an attorney at Boston’s Irish Immigration Center, established in 1989, and today serving immigrants from more than 100 nations. She is also among the SCNs reaching out to help Haitians following the tragic earthquakes. Sister Eleanor will be featured in a future Journey article.

Prayers for the People of Haiti Along with the rest of the world, SCN family members watched accounts of the devastation following the January earthquakes in Haiti with great concern. SCNs quickly went into action to raise funds and offer prayers for the people of Haiti. At the Motherhouse in Nazareth, Ky., Sisters watched in sadness and disbelief at the destruction and desperation in Haiti. After seeing the images on the news and reading the stories, Pat Worley, SCN, says she had to help. “To see the absolute deplorable situations, human beings under rubble and crying children, all the things that pull on your heartstrings. The images were more than I could take.” The leadership of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth decided to send a donation to help with direct relief efforts. Sister Pat joined with Sarah Ferriell, SCN, and a few others who also live at the Motherhouse to collect funds to add to this amount. They passed out envelopes to friends, family and also placed some in church for the Sunday Mass. The Sisters collected over $11,000 for the relief effort. Pam Lawson, SCNA, has traveled to Haiti each year since 2000 with a Parish Twinning program through St. Jude Parish in Chattanooga, Tenn. Following the earthquake, Pam, a nurse, traveled to Haiti to join a 25 person medical team through Catholic Relief Services from Feb. 6-17. The sole purpose was to provide relief for a medical team in Carrefour, Haiti — approximately 30 minutes south of Port au Prince. “Our medical tent primarily was doing IV therapy, IV antibiotics for new amputees from the earthquake. Since we had generators we worked 12–16 hours every day,” Pam reports. Most of the patients were children since half of the population of Haiti is under the age of 20. “Every day as I worked, I looked into the eyes of these people and saw a mixture of sadness and hope — but at the end of the day it seemed like hope always prevailed over the sadness.”

SCN Associate Pam Lawson travelled to Haiti to work with earthquake victims. She was part of a medical team working with Catholic Relief Services.

“We were there on Feb 12th — the national day of mourning and most of the Haitians were singing, praying and dancing, thanking God for being alive. I’ve seen their spirit time and time again, but this was by far the most awesome experience I have had with them. They turned the national day of mourning into a national day of prayer and thanksgiving.” Pam was especially relieved to connect with a young woman she’s known since 2000, Rose Claire. Rose Claire was born with “bad feet” and could not walk her entire life. Before Rose Claire could have surgery last year, money had to be raised for her prosthesis and six months of rehab. Pam’s daughter, Anna raised $2,000 from a sweet 16 birthday party dance so Rose Claire could have her surgery, prosthesis and rehab. Rose Claire survived the earthquake, says Pam. “The entire rehab building in Carrefour was flattened, but these new amputees with their new prosthesis got out and lived on the streets until they got help.” “I have always deeply believed that every trip I make there, I am carrying the mission and spirit of Vincent de Paul, Louise de Marillac, Mother Catherine, and every SCN and Associate that I have heard about or met.”

Rose Claire was born with “bad feet” and could not walk. Recently Pam Lawson’s daughter raised money for surgery and prosthesis. Rose survived the earthquake.

To Remember is to Live

Though she died 25 years ago, Carol Anne Messina, SCN, remains very much a presence in the hearts and minds of those she worked alongside. “Recorder es vivir — to remember is to live,” Maria Montez, a farm worker, noted at the time of Carol Anne’s death. More than two decades after her death, Sister’s legacy is very much alive as evidenced recently when the low income housing development, Casa Messina, was named in her honor. Speaking at the recent dedication in Edcouch, Texas, Juanita Valdez-Cox, Executive Director of La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE), fondly recalled Sister Carol Anne, and her tireless efforts in low income communities. Upon their first meeting, ValdezCox couldn’t believe Sister Carol Anne was a nun saying she didn’t know a nun would be leading picket lines and lobbying the legislature. Her eyes were soon open once she saw Sister Carol Anne in action,“No matter how tough the assignment, she always got the job done, often with a smile, a joke, and a hug.” “And with chocolate and music,” adds Tess Browne, SCN, a close friend and confidant who worked alongside Sister Carol Anne lobbying Texas lawmakers on behalf of farm workers in the 1980s. Sister Carol Anne worked endlessly for the passage of the workers compensation bill, unemployment insurance and the abolition of the use of the short-handled hoe. Sisters Carol Anne and Tess successfully lobbied for legislation to abolish the 24-inch long farming tool which required workers to stoop for numerous hours, causing severe back problems and arthritis. In 1989, Maria Vincent Brocato, SCN, gave a moving reflection on the life and work of Sister Carol Anne, “So many of us knew Carol Anne Messina — and we have no doubt that she belongs in a SCN study of pioneering and risk taking … From South Plainfield, New Jersey to the migrant fields of South Texas, Carol Anne Messina’s life made a statement — and God’s people have benefited from that gift of her courage.”

7

Sisters of Charity of Nazareth • Vol. I 2010

In 1990 on the fifth anniversary of Sister Carol Anne’s death, Valdez-Cox wrote that Sister Carol Anne was deeply missed but that even in her death, her presence could be felt. “Sister Carol Anne may be gone, but her work remains as a living memorial to her persistence. When workers remember that the growers cannot force them to use a short-handled hoe, Hermana Carolina is in their hearts. When an injured farm worker collects Workers Compensation benefits for an accident in the fields, Hermana Carolina is remembered with great appreciation. And when growers are fined for not providing toilets and sanitation facilities to field workers, one can feel her genuine sadness at having to go to such extremes to acquire even the most basic human dignities.”

“Carol Anne Messina’s life made a statement — and God’s people have benefitted from that gift of her courage.”

SCN Associates Elizabeth and Felix Garza worked closely with Sister Carol Anne in the 1980s. Felix, who currently serves as the President of the National Farm Worker Ministry

(NFWM) Board, is quick to point out the lasting impact of Sister Carol Anne’s work and how members of the SCN family continue to follow in her footsteps. Passionate about social work from a very young age, Sister Carol Anne committed herself to reaching out to the poor and needy. She always wanted to be among the people and carried out ministries in a variety of settings from the rural areas of Bardstown, Ky., to positions at St. Joseph Infirmary, Our Lady of Peace Hospital, St. Benedict Learning Center, the Health and Welfare Council of Louisville, and the Family and Children’s Service in Roanoke, Va. In 1974, Sister Carol Anne became a member of the Pastoral team at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Raymondsville, Texas. Five years later, she became part of the National Farm Workers Ministry and joined the United Farm Workers (UFW) in Texas to help the organization become a viable political force. As Sister Maria recalls, it was in this role that Sister Carol Anne showed herself to be a true pioneer and risk-taker becoming a challenger to local and State lawmakers, on behalf of “her” Hispanic people. “She seemed fearless on their behalf, surely the active, decisive stance of a pioneer woman,” adds Sister Maria.

and students at the University of Texas-Austin. Her presence and work were so respected that when Sister Carol Anne and a former Governor of Texas died the same day in 1985, the Texas Senate was adjourned in their honor. And just days later on January 17, lawmakers passed a resolution honoring “Sister Carol Anne’s devotion to the struggle for the downtrodden farmworkers of the Valley.”

“She seemed fearless on their behalf, surely the active, decisive stance of a pioneer woman.”

So it is fitting that Casa Messina has been named in honor of Sister Carol Anne. The new facility includes 76 units of multi-bedroom apartments along with a community center, two playgrounds, pool, and laundry facilities. The National Farm Workers Service Center (NFWSC) commissioned Casa Messina through funding help from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs as well as the Hidalgo County Urban County program. The grand opening ceremony was held in October 2009. Vice-Provincial Brenda Gonzales, SCN, often thinks of Sister Carol Anne, “She was a tough talking Italian from New Jersey, but with a soft heart.” Sister Brenda says she was inspired by Sister Carol Anne’s tenacity and sense of justice. Sister Tess says Sister Carol Anne also inspired many of the state’s legislators

Dozens of people wrote letters, articles, and tributes following Sister Carol Anne’s death, including touching words from Marie Sweeney, a former SCN. “Those of you who knew her, realized that Carol Anne was quite colorful by nature. Her sense of humor, her frequent and spontaneous tears, and her ability to embellish a routine occurrence into a memorable event resulted in as many troubles as rewards for her. … For as many people that came as friends to her funeral, there are probably just as many people that felt relieved at her absence. For them she became the adversary because she lived on the frontier of justice that I believe Catherine Spalding would have eagerly embraced. … She seemed so versatile, so resilient, so untiring. And yet, it was she who was called to an early death.”

Sister Carol Anne died when she was just 47. For the last 25 years, Valdez-Cox has spoken with great passion about Sister Carol Anne, last October she once again emphasized the impact of this amazing woman and how she deserves to be recognized for the positive change she made for farmworkers. “She was a truly faithful follower of the teachings of the Holy Scripture,” says Valdez-Cox , “whose actions spoke louder than her words.” To view a video clip of the dedication of Casa Messina go to: www. scnfamily.org/casa.

SCNs continue to work for justice and the rights of all throughout the world. To be part of these efforts that are in line with Sister Carol Anne’s legacy, use the enclosed envelope and designate the area that you would like to support.

SCNs Carol Anne (left) and Tess Browne (right) worked directly with Caesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers. Sister Tess says Sister Carol Ann was one major reason for her wanting to become an SCN.

Moving Mountains in Nepal It had been ten years since her last visit, and Mary Elizabeth Miller, SCN, was looking forward to seeing how the ministries in Nepal were growing. Landing in Kathmandu in February 2009, while transportation workers in the city were striking, the first few hours got off to an adventurous start as she found herself travelling by rickshaw in order to make her way to SCN ministries. As she visited SCNs across the country, she was struck by one thought over and over, “Mother Catherine would be smiling at your work. She would be so proud. SCNs are truly reaching out to people in need, empowering women, helping the poor, teaching the children …” While in Kathmandu, Sister Mary Elizabeth visited the Navjyoti Centre. “To see the smiles and accomplishments of many of the disabled students and clients is truly inspiring,” says Sister Mary Elizabeth.

have confidence, and are willing to stand up for themselves, and advocate for others. In empowerment programs, women also learn a trade, basic English and writing, hygiene, first aid, and other life skills. They are asked to return to their villages and empower others. As Sister Mary Elizabeth travelled from ministry to ministry, she says she couldn’t help but be in awe of the Sisters working tirelessly to educate children and parents, care for the disabled, and those providing much needed health care. Upon visiting a SCN mobile medical clinic, she spoke to one woman who walked seven hours to receive care. The woman was one of more than 240 patients waiting to see a doctor that day. Most had travelled great distances and were willing to stand patiently in long lines. All were grateful to receive medical care. No matter what ministry or areas Sister Mary Elizabeth visited, she said she was constantly struck that the “people were so happy to see us, so excited and pleased we were coming to the village.” Also visiting Nepal in 2009 was Bridget Kappalumakal, SCN, who found herself arriving in Kathmandu during a strike. That meant nothing on wheels would move- not even a bicycle, says Sister Bridget, nothing except the “two legs.” Sister Bridget recounts, “I did not know what I was going to do but then a boy appeared with a placard with my name on it and said the Sisters sent him to meet me … I asked him, ‘how we were going to go’ and he said casually, ‘walking …’ We saw no cars, motorcycles, rickshaws or bicycles along the way … The boy walked ahead of us pulling the bag through the ups and downs of the road, mud, rock, water and everything else and finally, we reached home at the end of about 2 ½ hours.”

In Surkhet, Sister Mary Elizabeth witnessed the success of a women’s empowerment group. Coordinators reach out to women in remote villages and work to instill in them a sense of confidence and self respect. One of the women in the program shared, “we used to be fighting each other, now we work together.” And how they have worked together to clean up the village, learn skills, and to protect one another when family members become violent. Sister Mary Elizabeth says the women in the village are so proud of all they have accomplished, that they designed matching pink and black saris. Now when the women are seen together, they command respect. It’s as if others in the village “sit up straight, take notice,” says Sister Mary Elizabeth. The need to empower women and children is great. Describing how women in one village were so shy and lacked confidence says Sister Mary Elizabeth, they would sometimes cry when addressed or even asked their names. These same women now

Cecilia Simick, SCN, runs a mobile health care clinic in Nepal. Sister Cecilia and her team are much loved for the care and concern they show to the Nepalese people. Patients will walk many miles and will wait in long lines to receive medical care. There are few health care options in many of the villages.

Sister Bridget welcomed the strike as an opportunity that allowed her to experience the unpredictability of events that the people of Nepal and the Sisters must embrace. “One has to learn to take things as they come and make the needed adjustments,” shares Sister Bridget.

2-hour walk, mostly uphill. After walking some distance, the Sisters stopped briefly for a break and a cup of tea. Women dressed in pink and black saris came along who had heard about the roadblock. “They told us they will go and bring the vehicle … and bring they did,” says Sister Bridget. “About 15 of them marched down the hill … and came back with the vehicle. What we were not able to do they did with group bargaining power. These same women, some years ago, could not even stand up and say even one word in the class let alone in front of others, have now been transformed into powerful forces in the society, able to demand their rights.”

Bridget Kappalumakal, SCN, found herself relying on the kindness of a local shopkeeper, who offered to give her a ride upon her arrival in Dharan, Nepal in the middle of a strike. All forms of transportation had been shut down, so Sister Bridget, ever the adventurer, held on to her luggage, and made her way to the ministry sites there.

Sister Bridget’s visit in June to Kathmandu was just one week after the church bombing at Assumption Catholic Church that killed three people and injured more than a dozen. SCNs, stunned and saddened by the attack, knew some of the victims. The shock was still very fresh in everyone’s mind says Sister Bridget. The day after she reached Kathmandu, another victim, who had suffered burns, died. Sister Bridget went to the victims’ funeral. “I had the opportunity to be present for her funeral in the same church which was bombed a week earlier … It was a very moving and heart wrenching experience as the father of the little girl and his other two younger children were holding on to each other and sobbing. They were inconsolable and all in the church were in tears. The effects of the bombing were still seen on the high ceiling of the church where the bomb blasted and went up.” From Kathmandu, Sister Bridget made her first visit to Surkhet to visit a women’s center, school, and the convent. “Surkhet is a beautiful place and Sister Rosita Kavilpurayidathil, our pioneer woman there, has done wonders with the people especially women and children.” Sister Bridget witnessed firsthand what she describes as the “empowered women of Sister Rosita.” It happened on World Environment Day in the village of Gadi, about two hours drive from the Center. Sister Bridget and others were about half way to Gadi, when their van was stopped by a road blocked due to a dispute. The Sisters had no choice but to start out on foot for a

Sister Bridget’s last stop in Nepal was Dharan, where she had yet another adventure. “When I reached the airport at Birathnagar, I found no Sisters there to receive me as we had planned … I found out that there was a strike in one area and our Sisters were stuck … So, they called one of their friends, a shopkeeper, and told him to meet me and take me to the place where the Sisters were waiting. I asked the man how we were going and

he said on the motorcycle.” I responded, “On the bike? With my luggage?” He said, “Don’t worry. We’ll manage. So, I sat on the bike and kept my heavy bag in my lap and away we went.” Sister Bridget returned to India with many memories and a renewed respect for all in ministry in Nepal and all who live in that country. “This is the everyday experience of our Sisters in Nepal. They do not know what will happen from hour to hour, from day to day. But they continue their ministries in joy and enthusiasm and dedication, believing in the promise of Jesus that ‘I will be with you always.’”

First Indian SCNs Celebrate Milestone The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth celebrate a milestone as the first group of Sisters from India marks 50 years as SCNs. This milestone honors the diversity and internationality of the Congregation. The milestone also honors the courage of four young Indian women who spurred on by unwavering faith left their homes in the South of India and travelled hundreds of miles from their families to join a new family. These women, who had to convince family members to allow them to leave home to live among strangers, could not be deterred. A further act of faith; some of them did not even know what religious community they would wind up joining as the priest who organized their travels would be the one to decide. Their journey led them to the SCNs, a group of women from the United States, who had just come to India a few years earlier. From the moment the four decided to leave their homes to the time they took their vows there would be many challenges. It would be the first time away from home, the first ride on a train, and the first time to see the sea. The four would

find themselves missioned in a totally unknown place with people unknown to them. There were many obstacles — language and lifestyle barriers, food habits and the ways of the U.S. Sisters. And the women would discover that the Sisters were not quite ready to accept young women to join them in mission yet, as they were following the advice of clergy to learn more about their surroundings before growing in number. SCNs Bridget Kappalumakal, Teresa Velloothara, Anne Elizabeth Elampalathottyil and Elizabeth Emmanuel Vattakunnel have many stories to tell. Sister Teresa writes about arriving at Mokama in July. Recalling in detail how happy they were that their long journey had come to an end. And then, the momentary disappointment at the news they received when the priest and Lawrencetta Venneman, SCN, greeted one another and discussed their arrival. As she talked with him she looked at us

A number of celebrations took place in India and the United States to honor the four Indian Golden Jubilarians. During the gathering in Mokama, India, the tribute included a Mass and a beautiful dance portraying the four Sisters as the elements — fire, earth, air, and water.

and smiled for we could not understand their conversation for it was in English. After a little while, the priest came and talked with us in our own mother tongue. “The Sisters are happy to have you but they have no permission yet to start the Novitiate, for they are only seven and a half years in the mission land. They are sure they will get permission soon; and in the meantime will put you to study nursing or allied subjects.” Sister Teresa also recounts that the four were then told they could join the Novitiate as soon as the Sisters started it, but in the meantime they each had the option to join another Congregation if they were in a hurry to do so. It was emphasized, writes Sister Teresa, “that we were free to make our own decisions.” The young Indian women chose to stay in Mokama and to begin studies in health care. They waited patiently for the opportunity to enter the Novitiate.

Current and former SCN leaders came together in Mokama, India, to honor the Golden Jubilarians. Among the guests, SCN President, Mary Elizabeth Miller, pictured in a royal blue sari standing in the center of those gathered.

Meanwhile, the Sisters, who arrived in India in 1947, continued to follow the advice of church leaders and did not begin the Novitiate program in Mokama until 1957. From 1947 to 1957, the SCNs immersed themselves in the local culture, the Church and the people. In that 10 year period, a leprosy and outpatient clinic was started as well as a hospital and nursing school. From the very beginning, young Indian women who joined the SCNs were encouraged to take over as leaders of the Congregation and to branch out in ways that would improve the lives of others says Margaret Rodericks, SCN, a native of Mumbai, India. Now there are SCNs in a number of roles across India, shares Sister Margaret, “Indian Sisters today are totally in all leadership positions and not just Congregational but also in ministry. Sister Reaches Out to Vincentian Home Residents She is a constant welcoming presence at Vincentian Home. Adored by both staff and residents at the Pittsburgh ministry, Lorraine Marie Ferlin, SCN, always goes out of her way to help others. A resident there since March of 1996, Sister Lorraine has been in a wheelchair for nearly 14 years and suffers from chronic pain. Though she has to overcome many physical obstacles, she doesn’t take the time to focus on that, instead she says, she would rather focus on the needs of those around her. “There are others worse off than me,” says Sister Lorraine Marie who finds that when others reach beyond themselves, they are able to experience relief from their own suffering. Sister prays with the other residents and attends Mass. She enjoys reading to and laughing with her neighbors and loves to reminisce about the past. She has a way of empowering the other residents by asking them to help her with projects and she encourages those around her to find purpose in each day. Sister Lorraine Marie also goes out of her way to be present to other Sisters helping them with anything they may need, including reading mail to those who are no longer able to do so, or washing their blouses. Members of the Activity Department are quick to point out just how they benefit from Sister Lorraine Marie’s talents and kindness. She calls bingo when needed and also donates prizes. She helps with arts and crafts preparation, cutting out pictures from used cards, making get well and thank you cards for staff, volunteers, and fellow residents. Sarah Geier, SCN, who ministers to residents at Vincentian Home, describes Sister Lorraine Marie as being akin to an extra pair of eyes and ears because she knows who is supposed to be where for activities and appointments. “When patients go to chapel, she is

always noticing who needs what,” says Sister Sarah. “She’s very compassionate, very thoughtful, very generous, and a very hard worker with a keen sense of organization.” Many have commented that it seems as if Sister Lorraine Marie was destined to care for others, given she came from a large family. She has four brothers and seven sisters. Sister Sarah believes the large family that Sister Lorraine comes from contributes to her kindhearted ways and her eagerness to help others. Sister Lorraine Marie agrees and recalls that whether it was washing dishes or scrubbing floors, as the ninth of 12 children, there was always something that needed to be done. “We all got up early and we all had jobs to do,” she says. Sister Lorraine Marie spent her childhood in Mammoth, Pa., after a flood forced her family from their home in Bagley, Pa. She entered the convent at age 15 and has always enjoyed community life. She worked hard in college to become an elementary teacher and taught throughout Pennsylvania, teaching kindergarten, first and second grades in East McKeesport, Munhall, and at St. Ursula’s and St. Sebastian Schools. In ministry for over 50 years, Sister Lorraine Marie asks in her daily prayer and meditation for God to enable her to go out to all as He did and to be kind to everyone. “I see Christ in everyone,” Sister Lorraine Marie says.

SCNs Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Sister Visitor The 40th anniversary of Sister Visitor Center in Louisville, Ky., prompts Rebecca Miles, SCN, to quietly reflect upon those to whom she ministers. Though she has been a powerful force behind the success of the center, she is very matter of fact when she talks about how she and others at the center are able to reach out to others. “You just do the best you can in each situation,” says Sister Rebecca. As director of the center located in Louisville’s Portland neighborhood, Sister Rebecca has committed her life to reaching out to those in need. A native of Louisville, Sister Rebecca has an education both in social work and nursing. She spent many years working in nursing at St. Joseph Infirmary, Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital, and Kosair Children’s Hospital. She also provided health care to the elderly before joining Sister Visitor and becoming director nearly two decades ago. The Sister Visitor Center began in 1969 in an effort to help meet the needs of the poor living in the Portland, Shawnee and Russell neighborhoods of West Louisville. Today approximately 700 to 900 households are served each month.

center also depends on donated items to meet the basic needs of the people that it serves. The need is clear, emphasizes Sister Rebecca while referencing a very large stack of donated blankets. Within a few weeks, every blanket had been given out to families in need. “Anything we get goes right to our clients,” she says. Sister Rebecca is also grateful to the many people who volunteer at the center. Rita Davis, SCN, volunteers to cut hair for clients. While the center provides daily assistance for the immediate needs of its clients, Sister Rebecca is careful to point out that the center does not just give handouts but follows certain criteria which are assessed by the center’s caseworkers. The center also offers courses in areas such as self help, “We expect each person to take responsibility for themselves,” emphasizes Sister Rebecca. Though Sister Rebecca witnesses the poverty, adversity and hardships that her clients experience, she also witnesses success stories, like clients who go on to graduate from nursing school. “We have people that come back in and want to pay us back with a check,” she says. If you would like to donate to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and those working with the needy and impoverished, go to www. scnfamily.org/help.

The SCNs were part of a collaborative group who founded Sister Visitor and SCNs have provided leadership since its founding. In 1999, on the 30th anniversary of the center, Sister Rebecca wrote poignantly about the centers’ early beginnings. On July 5, 1969, Sister Janet Daugherty (SCN) signed a one-year contract with the Archdiocese of Louisville as an Educational Social Worker … The job description was divided into three areas of involvement: school, parish, and community. Soon this position evolved into Director of the Sister Visitor Center. While visiting the homes of the school children, who were having problems with attendance and failing grades, many other underlying problems were discovered. Often the homes were without light and heat and adequate food. The children were often in need of shoes, warm clothing, and even eye glasses. As the efforts to reach those in need continued, more needs became apparent. The center soon found itself offering a variety of services. Since becoming director of the center in 1991, Sister Rebecca has seen outreach efforts further expand. The center provides emergency aid with rent, utility bills, prescriptions, and medical supplies. The staff and volunteers also visit the sick and elderly and provide transportation to city and state agencies and medical appointments. Sister Visitor Center, owned and operated by Catholic Charities, is funded in part by the Archdiocese of Louisville. The center also receives donations from individuals and groups, including support from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. “With the donations, we are enabled to help people,” says Sister Rebecca. care developments, diaries, musical instruments, clothing and more. While health care is heavily highlighted in the exhibit, Catholic Sisters are also recognized for founding the first college for African Americans as well as educating women to become professionals long before women won the right to vote.

The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are featured, along with 20 other women religious congregations, in an exhibit currently being hosted at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. The nationally touring exhibit celebrates the contributions of Catholic Sisters in health care, social justice, and education in the United States.

The exhibit also includes a video which focuses on religious life in the 21st century. As one document reflects, “This is not the end of the story, but the opening of a yet-to-be revealed chapter. Those living in this moment do not try to figure out what role they will play in history. They simply read the signs of the times and find ways to respond.” The exhibit includes educational materials available for teachers in K-12 schools, group showings, video presentations, interactive media, as well as books and films available for special programs.

The exhibit, which opened at the Cincinnati Museum Center in May of 2009, highlights this group of independent American women who helped shape the nation’s social and cultural landscape. First arriving in America nearly 300 years ago and throughout periods of struggle and controversy, these women established numerous schools, hospitals and colleges. Women & Spirit, Catholic Sisters in America, developed by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), tells the story spanning three centuries of Catholic Sisters in America who served with compassion, dedication, determination and faith in education, health care, and social services.

A safeguard from President Lincoln to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth on display at Women & Spirit, Catholic Sisters in America reads, “Let no depredation be committed upon the property or possessions of the ‘Sisters of Charity’ at Nazareth Academy near Bardstown, Ky. Jan. 17, 1865. A. Lincoln.”

Interviews in communities, on Capitol Hill, in hospitals, and colleges were conducted across the country. Unearthed archival film never seen outside Sister communities along with artifacts, photos and personal stories, make up the rich content of the exhibit. Key events in American history such as the Civil War, the influenza epidemic, the Civil Rights Movement, and Hurricane Katrina are depicted as well as the important role Sisters played in them.

Some of the items on display featuring the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are a scale model bale of cotton with a screened image of an SCN school in Pine Bluff, Ark., where it was made for the 1903 Worlds Fair, a photo of Sisters at Camp Taylor during the 1918 influenza epidemic, and a program from a slavery reconciliation service that took place in 2000. The Women & Spirit exhibit also displays numerous artifacts assembled from more than 400 communities include travel trunks, journals of immigration experiences, pioneering health

A Life-Time Relationship When asked how long she’s known the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Helen Burns is quick to respond, “I’ve known them all my life.” Growing up in Louisville, Ky., Helen was taught by SCNs at Holy Name and Blessed Sacrament grade schools. Then, she won a scholarship to Presentation Academy. Her academic career was rounded out at St. Helena’s Commercial College on Fourth Street in Louisville, which was owned and administered by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. So, it’s only natural that in 1990, Helen decided to formalize the relationship when she made her first commitment as an SCN Associate. Helen has been an active member of St. Bernard Parish in Louisville for over 43 years. The desire to deepen her relationship with the SCN Community was sparked when Kitty Hanrahan, SCN, came to St. Bernard Parish to serve as pastoral associate. Helen inquired about becoming an SCN Associate, and was encouraged by the response of Sister Kitty and Joan de Paul Logsdon, SCN. “Sister Joan was my biggest fan!” Helen remembers.

Helen served as a member of the SCNA Core Council, the leadership body of the SCN Associates, for six years. She describes the relationship as “an extension of my Catholic faith.” Always active in her parish, the SCN Associate relationship allowed Helen to broaden her experience of Church. Helen remembers that she was initially reluctant to speak up at Core Council meetings, until one Sister turned to her and asked for her input on a discussion. “Don’t feel inadequate to answer a question … you with all your life experience,” the Sister coached. Helen remembers feeling included and valued for the insights she offered. Though she is no longer able to attend the weekend sessions for SCNAs offered three times a year, Helen remains active with her faith group in Louisville. She glows when she speaks about her family — Helen has two sons and three grandchildren. Her days are filled with family, with prayer, and with outreach. Peggy Masterson, SCNA, Director of Associates, holds Helen up as an example of what it means to be an SCN Associate. “The way she lives as an Associate — it is more than a program, it is a process in her life.” Helen chuckles at Peggy’s comment, and says, “You never know how you touch other people.” For more information on the SCN Associate Relationship, visit www.scnfamily.org/scna or call Peggy Masterson, SCNA, at (502) 348-1542.

It speaks of the importance of the relationship with the community and the desire to be part of the Congregation’s efforts even after death,” says Patsy O’Toole, Director of Congregational Advancement.

2009

was a year of deepening our connections and working with others to manifest God’s presence in the world. Our ministries expanded and strengthened and together we worked to deepen our lives of prayer and service to others. In small groups and large groups we came together to plan for the future and rejoice at the past.

Around the world members of the SCN family looked for new and creative ways to connect and share their charism. The Congregation launched a more interactive Web site and members of the SCN family embraced Skype, Facebook, and Twitter. Thanks to technology, two Sisters miles apart and unable to travel, one in Pittsburgh and one in Nazareth, both in their eighties, were able to meet each other for the first time via video conference. And the first Indian Sisters to make vows as SCNs fifty years ago were able to join in prayer over the Internet with Golden Jubilarians at the Motherhouse. Yet another memorable moment, the smile on a donor’s face when she was able to use Skype to connect with the child she sponsors in India, so the two could talk face to face. Together we strengthened our oneness around the world, and together we celebrated the first anniversary of two Congregations becoming one. Weaving our lives together, Sisters began to move from Nazareth to Pittsburgh and from Pittsburgh to Nazareth to pray, work and minister side by side.

As 2009 came to an end, and we reflected upon the powerful experiences and many blessings, yet another blessing took place — the discovery of a baby at Christmas. The baby was found abandoned in a shopping bag wrapped in a torn skirt in the Howra–New Delhi — Janata Express train station on a bitter cold morning. Passengers discovered the little girl and gave her to police who in turn brought the child to Nazareth Hospital. Sisters cared for and cleaned the baby, dressed her in warm clothes and blankets, and gave her a name. “Christi” (our Christmas gift) found many hands and hearts reaching out to her. The news of her birth quickly spread as local newspapers inquired about her discovery. Orphaned on the day of her birth, in less than a week’s time, Christi found herself in the comforting, caring and loving embrace of the SCN family and a childless couple who had prayed for a little girl. Over and over, we are reminded of the importance of connections — of relationships that make us stronger, that extend our reach, that help to witness to God’s continual presence in our lives. These pages are stories that celebrate God’s goodness, and you share in the beauty. Thank you for your part in making all this possible.

Empowering Women Empowering women is at the heart of many programs sponsored by SCNs. The Mission Statement for the Congregation calls SCNs to “work for justice in solidarity with oppressed persons, especially the economically poor and women …” This value is lived out in various ways in SCN ministries in the United States, Belize, Botswana, India and Nepal.

Sokho, located in the state of Bihar, is a very remote village. As you travel to the village the distances between each town grow larger, the road becomes more treacherous and huge rocks jut out of the earth. There is little sign of life — human or animal. The somewhat paved road gives way to a river. You must follow the dirt path on the other side of the river, full of holes and bumps, until the path seems to disappear and then finally you see a school rising out of the ground in the distance. The weather in Sokho can be unpredictable, malaria is prevalent, and there are few opportunities to make a living. Our Sisters, far from any town and any other SCNs, spend their days running a school, hostel, clinic, and empowerment programs. The impact the Sisters have on hundreds of lives is overwhelming. To connect with the residents, the only path is by foot, so you must hike a distance into the village where the residents live in mud huts or simple buildings constructed from wood. Some women in the village are able to earn a little money by making plates out of leaves while the older children, who are kept from attending school, are relied upon to care for younger siblings. Because of Leena Padam, SCN, far left, coordinates empowerment programs for women the desolate location, and the poverty stricken conditions, living in the very remote village of Sokho, India. Through empowerment illness is rampant, food is sometimes hard to come by, and programs, women are transformed into self reliant, confident decision people are so desperate that crime has been on the rise. makers who speak up and advocate for themselves. Residents sometimes live in fear of being threatened or attacked. In India, Sisters have been empowering women and children for six decades. Many of these women face numerous obstacles, they Working closely with the families, the Sisters are trying to build have little access to education and as a result do not learn to read, a just and peaceful community and to bring an end to child write or handle finances. In some areas, families keep their girl marriages, human trafficking, and child labor. The Sisters are children home so that they can care for and support the family. tireless in their efforts to educate, empower and improve health In some cases young girls have even been sold by their families care. Health classes, offered by Sushma Xaxa, SCN, teach women and end up being trafficked as sex slaves or domestic servants. Hope is now coming to many of these women. Through empowerment programs, SCNs work to transform women into self-reliant, confident decision makers who speak up and advocate for themselves and others. These women attend classes on a number of topics and they have the opportunity to learn a trade so they can support themselves. The SCN ministry with women in the tiny village of Sokho is one of the success stories. Leena Padam, SCN, has launched numerous programs aimed at helping women help themselves. But to understand the impact that Sister Leena and other SCNs are having in that village, one must understand what it is like to live in Sokho.

Dozens of women in Sokho, India, attend classes with Sister Leena. They are learning to read, write, handle finances, and the importance of educating their children. Because they have come together, they are eligible as a group for subsidized loans. These loans have made it possible for the women to learn a trade in order to support themselves and their families.

Sisters of Charity of Nazareth • 2009 Annual Report

The women decided to become weavers but it would take six months of arduous training and the overcoming of some stereotypes. Shanti Hembrom, a weaver says, “I thought only men weave clothes and I did not even know how the clothes were made. I thought some chemical was used for the clothes to be together. It is an amazing incident for us to know the fact that we can make clothes which people can use in any society.” Seven women have successfully completed the initial training, others are now wanting to follow in their footsteps having witnessed the transformation of these women. Sister Leena has also worked with women regarding land holding rights. Where there had been no land holding rights for women, SCNs offer empowerment programs in Belize, Central America. In the village of Las Flores, women are learning English as a Second Language. Carlette Gentle, SCN, is six Muslim Women’s groups have now formed helping the women learn more about the importance of nutrition and ways in which they a Federation to both challenge the situation might create meals for themselves and their families. and take up community farming. They did so by putting their family land together for how to better care for themselves and their families and ways to community farming. In the first year of their cultivation, each prevent malaria. The women are also learning the importance of group made a profit. These women are now eagerly waiting for a sending their children to school. second loan in order to do something on a larger scale. Noting that the key to rising from difficult conditions is the ability to earn a living, Sister Leena has worked to bring the women together to start their own cottage industries. Over the years SCNs have observed that those who are poor have a difficult path to travel on their own, but as a group, they are able to achieve great things and move forward, Sister Leena is currently working closely with six tribal women’s Self Help Groups (SHG) to help them form a Federation in order to more successfully avail government provisions under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). NREGA gives loans to women’s Self Help Groups with a 50 percent subsidy so that as a group they can begin any trade. Coming together as one Federation makes it possible for the women to collect a larger amount. Sister Leena has had to overcome many hurdles while working with the women. She had to help the women learn to work together. Sister Leena also had to ease the women’s anxiety at the prospect of receiving a large sum of money at one time. She says the women were anxious because not one of them could ever imagine that they would be the recipient of such large sums of money and they were keenly aware that the government was not eager to give a subsidy to what they view as “simple tribal women.” Another hurdle was helping the women reach a consensus about what income generating trade they should take up as a group.

As the Sokho Sisters strive to build a just and peaceful community in Sokho, they hold fast to the daring spirit of Mother Catherine as they face unending challenges. If you would like to support empowerment programs, visit the SCN Website at www. scnfamily.org or contact Leslie Wilson, Director of Development at (502) 348-1551 to discuss ways you can be involved.

Women in Botswana, Africa, proudly display the items they have created. The women are part of an empowerment program where they learning new skills including how to sew.

Members of the SCN family in Botswana, strengthened and grew our programs for children. Thanks to the installation of a water tank, they were able to plant a garden to help provide food for families. SCNs also expanded their involvement in health care ministries by staffing a new ground breaking facility that provides high quality palliative care and support to those infected or affected by HIV/AIDs. The hospice is named “Pabalelong” — Home of Love and Care. There is no facility of this kind in the entire country so this is a pioneering institution.

There were many reasons to celebrate in India in 2009. Nazareth Academy in Gaya, India, welcomed the completion of a new addition. Dozens gathered at the Nazareth Academy in October 2009 to inaugurate the Academy’s new building. In this photo, SCNs gather around one of the SCN pioneers, Sister Ann Roberta Powers. Sister Ann, one of the first SCNs to begin ministry in India, has taught in numerous schools. Several members of the SCN family gathered for the blessing of the first SCN House in Musunuru, Andhra Pradesh. The blessing took place in September 2009. The blessing of a new house in Ranchi, India, took place in May 2009 and construction on a new facility for Asha Niwas, Gurgaon moved forward. In Nepal, Navjyoti Center, Surkhet, was selected as the best Non Government Organization (NGO) working with children in the Surkhet district.

Volunteers and donors helped us reach out to even more people in 2009. Dozens of volunteers worked with Luke Boiarski, SCN, travelling throughout the United States, Belize, and Mexico to build homes, teach children, and make much needed repairs. From Appalachia to New Orleans, groups of volunteers repaired homes and touched lives. Over and over, both the volunteers and the recipients described their experiences as powerful and life changing. Sister Luke also found ways to collaborate with other organizations to bring much needed help to people in places where they feel forgotten. She did so by connecting with folks in the Charity Federation and Hand in Hand Ministries.

SCNs in the United States are expanding their outreach efforts to the aging and disabled. Vincentian Villa opened in the North Hills of Pittsburgh, Pa., and shares a campus with Sisters living at St. Louise Convent. The community is comprised of 40 patio homes, a 24-unit apartment building, a club house, ample green space, walking trails, fitness center, and other conveniences. Meanwhile, Nazareth Home in Louisville, Ky., was once again recognized for its outstanding ministry to the senior and disabled community. Rated as a top-notch facility with a heartwarming environment and a dedicated and caring staff, Nazareth Home won numerous awards and received countless letters of thanks from families. Nazareth Villages, apartments for seniors and disabled, located on the Motherhouse campus in Nazareth, Ky., celebrated its 30th anniversary. To mark the anniversary the local newspaper, The Kentucky Standard, published a moving tribute … The footprint of the Sisters of Charity impart to their home community must be measured by more than bricks and mortar but the operation of Nazareth Villages I and II is certainly one of the more tangible ways the order has impacted the quality of life for Bardstown and Nelson County. In Belize, Sisters across that country celebrated the progress of ministries in Las Flores. Carlette Gentle, SCN, began a daycare center which is now officially part of the formal school in the village. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the SCN Congregation, donors, and the community, families living in Las Flores also now have a new library and computer center. Las Flores is home to mostly Spanish speaking refugees who fled El Salvador during the war years of the 1970s and 1980s. Shortly after moving to Las Flores in 2006, SCNs helped the village leaders conduct a census and survey to help determine the needs and priorities of the villagers. Two needs rose to the top: a daycare and a community library.

The SCN family continues to grow! In Belize, four Associates made their initial commitment as SCN Associates and six Associates renewed their commitment for three years. There are 28 Associates in Belize. In Botswana, Africa and Nazareth, Ky., it was a historic moment as two groups of SCN Associates separated by oceans, connected over the Internet, and joined in prayer during weekend gatherings in September. In Botswana, seven women made their commitments becoming the first SCN Associates in the country. At Nazareth, over 86 SCNs, Associates, candidates and inquirers attended the fall retreat. That same weekend seven candidates made their initial commitments as SCN Associates at Nazareth.

We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.

You are invited to visit the Nazareth Visitor Center, Archives and the Nazareth Retreat Center and Heritage Hall, located in O’Connell Hall, on the Motherhouse Campus, in Nazareth, Ky. The Visitor Center is in the room that once served as the Ceramics Shop. Browse through the display of beautiful photos, sculptures, pieces of art, and literature. View a video about the Congregation and its current ministries. The Archival Center is on the second floor. Come by and find out more about the rich SCN history, learn more about our collections, including the “Lincoln Note” (handwritten note from Abraham Lincoln promising protection of SCN property during the Civil War), and see exhibits. Wanting to plan a retreat? In the Nazareth Retreat Center, visitors can ask questions about retreats and spiritual direction. Or, just need a little peace and quiet? Stroll the grounds. Nazareth is a sacred place, a spiritual environment, and a place of inspiration.

For more information contact Rita Davis, SCN, about the Visitor Center at (502) 331-4517, Kathy Hertel-Baker about the Archival Center at (502) 348-1548, Sharon Gray, SCN, regarding the Nazareth Retreat Center at (502) 348-1500, or Frances Krumpelman, SCN, at (502) 348-1545, regarding Heritage Hall.
