FALL 2001 Special “Partners in Ministry” Double Issue

SCNs experience a year of growth while striving to respond to the needs of a changing world 2000-2001 has been an incredible year for the SCN Community in many ways. Yet, shortly after we began our new fiscal year, the events of September 11 have resounded around the entire world. As our generous prayer partners, benefactors, alumni, and friends; you have stood with us as we prayed with those grieving the loss of life in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania (see page 2 for more information). Yet, in the midst of this unbelievable tragedy, we feel compelled to move forward for the cause of peace – to strive now, more than ever, to continue to fulfill our mission as an international congregation in a multicultural world, committed to work for

SCN Community responds to terrorist attack Nazareth Arts opened the exhibit “A Sampler of 30 Years, 1971-2001,” works by Jim Cantrell, on Thurs, Oct. 11 with a reception in the Nazareth Gallery. A peace candle burned as a reminder during the opening reception, and 10% of all sales from the Cantrell works will be donated to the Disaster Relief Fund. The SCN Southern Region has collected $1,912.65 to send to Liz Vermaelan, SC for the Sisters of Charity of New York relief efforts. “Each 11th day of the month there will be an hour set aside for prayer and reflection,” said Southern Regional Marlene Lehmkuhl, SCN.

In the wake of the terrorist attacks, the SCN Executive Committee voted to give the tax refunds from all U.S. SCNs who benefited from the recent tax cut, an amount totaling approximately $8,000, to charity, especially the terrorist victims. These funds will be channeled through the Sisters of Charity of New York to be distributed in their relief efforts. On November 1, a memorial service was held on the Nazareth Campus in which three Winter King Hawthorn trees were planted in memory of those who died in the terrorist attacks. In conjunction with the Leadership Conference for

Women Religious, the SCN Congregation has lobbied elected leaders and issued a statement expressing sorrow and anger at the wanton destruction of human life resulting from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and commending the heroism of many, the initially measured response of the U.S. Government, and humanitarian aid for the Afghan citizens. The statement also calls on elected leaders to refuse to respond to terrorism with more terrorism, continue to denounce domestic attacks on Arab and Muslim people, and honestly seek to address the ways in which U.S. policy and action may have contributed to the perception

that we do not adequately respect or value the people of other nations, especially those of Arabic descent. Northern Regional Gwen McMahon said, “The terrible events of September 11 have affected each of us in a profound way. We grieve with those who have lost loved ones. We are experiencing what many people the world over have experienced as innocent victims of terror and injustice... and yet, the call to prayer has spread like a forest fire throughout our land. The wind of the Spirit is with us! We realize how powerless we are against the forces of evil and how much we need our God.”

SCN Ministry in Memphis is celebrated September 15-16 Since 1882, more than 700 Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have served in the Memphis, Tennessee area, in 20 local Catholic schools as well as St. Peter’s Home. The SCNs celebrated that long-lasting connection with the Memphis Community during two events in September. On Saturday, September 15, as part of the year-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of St. Peter’s Home, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth were honored during a special Liturgy, celebrated by Most

SCNs on the Move Marilyn Spink, SCN, receives Tower Award Marilyn Spink, SCN received the 2001 Presentation Academy Tower Award in the area of Health Care. The award was presented at the 6th Annual Tower Awards on Thursday, October 11 at the Seelbach Hotel in Louisville.

The Presentation Academy Tower Awards for Women Leaders recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of women in the Kentuckiana area while identifying role models for students. Sister Marilyn Spink graduated from Presentation Academy in 1957 and entered the community of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth shortly after. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Spalding University in 1966 and a Master’s Degree from

the University of Kentucky in 1971, Sister Marilyn taught in the nursing program at Spalding University. Her keen interest in the death and dying process led her to explore the “new” concept of Hospice care in the mid1970s. Spending time in England working at a Hospice facility equipped her to bring this innovative concept to the Kentuckiana area. Her efforts were instrumental in establishing the first Hospice chapter in the area. Sister Marilyn served as Executive Director of Hospice in the early 1980s. Her work with AIDS led her to help establish Glade House for men with AIDS and House of Ruth for families affected by HIV/AIDS. She was also instrumental in getting Kentucky law changed to allow patients with AIDS to be residents in nursing homes.

Mary Monica Boll, SCN named Teacher of the Year Mary Monica Boll, SCN was named Mississippi Association of Adult and Community Education Teacher of the Year on August 8 during a meeting of the North Mississippi Literacy Alliance. Sister Mary Monica, who has worked with the Marshall County Literacy

Council for many years, was presented with a plaque honoring her for her work. Nardine Aquadro, SCN and the late Anne Whitehead, SCN, previously worked with the North Mississippi Literacy Alliance.

SCNs serve as principals in Jubilee schools SCNs Grace Maria Saia and Gertrude (Trudi) Foster are playing vital roles in an exciting educational project taking place in the Diocese of Memphis. In 1999, Bishop J. Terry Steib, S.V.D. announced plans to reopen six innercity Catholic schools closed because of financial trouble. The reopening of the Jubilee schools was made possible by an anonymous donation. By serving as principals of two of these Jubilee Schools, Sister Grace Maria and Sister Trudi carry on a long tradition of SCN education in the Memphis area. Sister Grace Maria, founding principal of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary in Germantown in 1996, was named principal of St. John, the first of the Jubilee Schools to be re-opened in 2000. Sister Grace Maria is excited about the future of the Jubilee Schools. “The Jubilee Schools and Scholarship Fund have provided families in innercity areas an option in educating their children. St. John’s bright classrooms and low adultto-child ratio provide an educational opportunity previously unknown in

these sections of the city,” she said. Sister Trudi chose to serve as principal of Little Flower School in the VollintineEvergreen community. After being closed for 16 years, the school reopened in August 2001 for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. Sister Trudi has a lifelong association with Memphis having grown up in the Greenlaw neighborhood north of downtown. “It is a real privilege to be here, to continue the tradition of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth who taught here for so many years,” said Sister Trudi. “The children are so excited for school to open. So am I! It is so important for us to have a presence and serve the community in North Memphis.”

Sister Mary Ellen introduced Ernest Gaines as guest speaker at the Spalding University Creative Writing Program on October 18. Both authors signed their books following the lecture. During her last year in school, she took care of her six brothers and sisters at home. After graduation, the family’s house burned down. Faced with disaster, Mary Victoria and her father turned to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth for help. The Sisters at St. Vincent Academy agreed to care for Mary Victoria’s four sisters, the youngest being four years old at the time, and the four girls were raised at St. Vincent’s. In August of this year, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth were notified that Mary Victoria French had passed away, and that she left a bequest of her civil service benefits to the Congregation. Highlights of the Journey

11 make first commitments as SCN Associates Eleven women made first commitments as Associate Members of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth during the Sixth Annual Associate Retreat/Commitment Weekend at Nazareth September 21-23. The theme of the weekend was “The Charism and Mission of the SCN Congregation.” In her address to the Associates, Marilyn Shea, SCN, asked, “What will we as individuals and as a nation learn from the terrorists attacks? How will NEWLY-COMMITTED SCN ASSOCIATE MEMBERS: The new SCN our lives be changed or Associates are from left: (Row 1) Hilda Mendez and Adriana transformed in this Baltazar of Dangriga, Belize; (Row 2) Patricia Cain of Belize City, historical context? How will Belize; Sheila Humphrey of Little Rock, Ark.; Joyce Ellis and we respond to the events of Jenoveva Henrietta Norales both of Dangriga, Belize; (Row 3) Carol our moment in history?” she Shain of Lexington, Ky.; Mary Metz of Knoxville, Tenn., said. “The spiritual tradition Paula Witek of Memphis, Tenn.; Dana Downes-Hall of Little Rock, of Vincent and Louise calls Ark.; and Carolyn Fegenbush of Shelbyville, Ky. us to live lives that are centered in Christ, conscious of our interdependence and interconnectedness with one another in the Body of Christ and rooted in human experience and events.” She called on the Associates and SCNs to answer God call in the 21st century by responding in faith; growing in wisdom, age, and grace; and allowing the love of Christ within to impel us to serve our sisters and brothers in need.

We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
