SCN Mission Statement a way of life in Rajgir The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth who minister in Rajgir, India exemplify the SCN Mission Statement. Since 1993, the Congregation has administered a program that addresses the education, healthcare and social needs of the people of Rajgir and the surrounding villages. Rajgir is located 65 miles southeast of Patna, the capital of Bihar, India. Although it is a well-known pilgrimage and tourist center, Rajgir is one of the most depressed parts of India. Problems affecting the people include a high rate of illiteracy, lack of health care facilities, scarceness of potable water and the low socioeconomic status of the people. Nearly all of the people are landless laborers. Most of the villagers
walk 6 to 8 miles to reach the hospital in Rajgir. An SCN Outreach Program has been established to provide health care to those unable to make the journey. Ten health workers travel regularly to the outlying villages to care for the sick. Dr. Rose Plathottam, SCN, a homeopathic doctor and physical therapist, serves as health program coordinator in Rajgir. SCNs Mercy Thundathil and Prisca Tirkey administer a primary school which serves 120 students, a health center, and a hostel for children affected by polio. Beginning in 2000, SCNs in Rajgir began providing formal education for 15 to 18 children in an existing shed. Sixty children now attend the facility. For those children unable to attend

The hostel at Rajgir currently provides a home for 10 children disabled by polio, with the number expected to grow to 30 children by 2003. In addition to food and shelter, these children receive formal education through the school and participate in an on-site rehabilitation program. In order to help develop skills among the people, Sister Mercy has established a tailoring center where 20 young women also receive training in soap making, cooking and basic health education.

Journeying in Church Leadership Almost twenty-five years ago SCNs Mary Lynn Fields, Kitty Wilson, Judy Raley, and Barbara Flores (a candidate at the time) facilitated sessions in the 1st Diocesan Assembly of Lay Ministries in Belize. Bishop R. L. Hodapp, SJ of Belize City called the gathering attended by representatives of all parts of the country. On that occasion Sister Judy Raley said, “Society must carry Christ’s vision of the Gospel to ‘the least, the lowest, the last, the lost’— or we will perish.” Many faithful lay ministers remain in the diocesan program, their median age between 50 and 60. In response to the need to prepare Belizean
youth for their place in the church, SCN Maggie Cooper, D. Min., heads a Church Leadership Program in the Theology Department of St. John’s College in Belize City. The program is designed to prepare young Catholic women and men who love their faith, who would like to be more involved in sharing ‘Christ’s vision of the Gospel’. Students receive background training in skills for work in churchrelated ministries: youth and campus ministry, social outreach, retreat leadership, liturgy planning, preparing students for the sacraments and other ministries. Sister Maggie foresees this developing,

Mission in Haiti: “Grace has its own moments.”St. Vincent de Paul Pam Lawson, an Associate Member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, had the opportunity to reaffirm her call to the Mission of the Laity when she traveled to Haiti in February 2002 as part of a medical mission sponsored by the Bill Gates’ Health Foundation. The foundation supports the health, education, and nutritional needs of women and children in Haiti, India and Africa. Pam’s role in Haiti was to provide immunizations. Pictures cannot adequately tell the story of the poverty and the harshness of life known to the Haitian people. When we arrived in the capitol city of Port-auPrince, I was better prepared than I had been the year before when I first traveled to Haiti with my parish of St. Jude, Chattanooga, Tenn. Men carrying weapons, garbage-lined streets, the unfinished, delapitated buildings and beggars on every street corner were a part of daily life in the city. As I looked about, I was reminded of how dusty and dry the land is and the sparseness of trees. I could see that lack of proper irrigation has caused massive erosion of the country’s few remaining precious resources. I was reminded again of how malnourished and hungry the people are. Our destination was several small mountain villages that stood far away from the outside world—some 35 miles away from Port-au-Prince.
After riding for six hours in the back of a truck, we took our gear and walked nearly two hours more into the mountains to help provide medical care, water and erosion research for the villages, and help establish food programs for the school children. Our work in the villages began at dawn. Some of the people had walked for days and were

Many times I either struck a bone or was compelled to hold pressure so that the vaccine would absorb into the tissue. Only the tiny babies cried. I was blessed many times over as children smiled or gave me a hug.
One of the most memorable parts of the trip was meeting the resilient women of Haiti who often carry gallons of SCNA Pam Lawson traveled to Haiti in water on their February as part of a medical mission heads for sponsored by the Bill Gates Foundation. miles. We established lunch programs in three schools. For many children, the rice and beans they received was their first meal in days. For many, this would be the only meal they would receive each day. Wherever we visited a school, they insisted that we sit down and join them for a meal. Rice and beans had never tasted so good because I was sitting down with God’s family – my family. Even though we could not understand each other without a translator, the message was clear. It was the Easter message given to me in a very unique way. The people of Haiti wake up every morning with Hope, the hope that comes from faith in the resurrected Christ. As St. Vincent de Paul said, “Grace has its moments.”

SCNs host gathering for alumni and friends in Leonardtown, Maryland More than 50 people attended the Gathering of Friends and Former Students of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth at Father Andrew White SJ School in Leonardtown, Md. on March 13. SCNs began ministering in Southern Maryland in 1885 with the opening of St. Mary’s Academy and continued to serve the area in 10 schools until 2000. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth still serve in Southern Maryland at Camp Maria Retreat Center where SCNs Carol McKean and Michaella Cronin minister to campers of all ages and abilities. The gathering included a PowerPoint program describing the present works of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
SCNs Brenda Gonzales, Angela Hicks, Cassilda Castell and Carol McKean spoke briefly about SCN ministries around the world. At the end of the presentation, the crowd heard the recorded messages and saw pictures of several SCNs who had served in Southern Maryland and now live at Nazareth. The messages from SCNs Antoinette Magistro, Camille Serafini, Clara Willett, Cornelius Keating, Frances Miriam Loker, Mary Elizabeth Miller and Thelma Cambron, evoked applause and smiles from the audience. In response, some of the alumni wrote notes that were carried back to the Sisters who were unable to attend.

In her 27 years of ministry in Southern Maryland, Sister Samuella taught at St. John’s Elementary School in Hollywood and the old St. Joseph Elementary School (now Mother Catherine Spalding). She also served at Camp Maria Retreat Center.
SCNs traveling to Leonardtown included Barbara Peterson, Cassilda Castell, Brenda Gonzales, Angela Hicks, Samuella Buckman, Christine Ellis, Carol McKean and Michaella Cronin. Barbara Qualls, Director of Alumni Relations, and Patsy

Alumni gatherings such as the one in Leonardtown, Md. provide an opportunity for SCNs to reconnect with people with whom they have shared a common journey. These events provide a beginning of new ways to communicate that will secure common ties. Postcards from the Journey
Office of Congregational Advancement staff changes to meet Community needs Six years ago, the SCN Leadership created the Office of Congregational Advancement (OCA) by combining the offices of Fund-raising, Communication, and Vocation Promotion. Susan Gatz, SCN was appointed director. Sister Susan cited the wisdom of that decision to create OCA as she looks at its significant growth. “The most gratifying growth experienced has been in the number of people with whom we have connected. I am always deeply touched to hear how someone’s life has been influenced by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Reconnecting with people who love the SCNs is a mutual gift.”
◆ Sister Susan began the new role as Provincial of the Western Province on June 1. (See story on page 1.) She leaves OCA on a solid foundation for continued growth and commitment to the SCN mission. “I have every confidence that OCA will continue to experience success. The office team has proven time and again that commitment to the Mission is at the heart of all that we do. The staff members are truly competent individuals who believe in the vision of the SCN Congregation.” A search committee has been formed to find a Director for the Office of Congregational Advancement.
◆ Cassilda Castell, SCN
joined the OCA staff five years ago. A native of Bombay, India, Sister Cassie has helped ensure that the office reflects the mission of an international congregation. In her years with OCA, Sister Cassie has traveled to meet individual donors throughout the country and has organized and led a tour to India. Two years ago, Sister Cassie accepted the position of Director of Development which includes the coordination of the Mission Appeal Program. As Sister Cassie returns to India this summer, thoughts of leaving OCA and Nazareth are bittersweet. “As I look back over the past five years, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for all that God has done for us individually and as a Congregation.” she said.
Sister Cassie feels that her experience at OCA will continue to strengthen the relationship between the newly formed Western and Eastern Provinces. “As I look ahead, I am excited as we journey toward a global world in which we will be connected in spirit, prayer, and mission.”

Barbara Peterson, SCN has served as Director of Alumni Relations since that time. Sister Barbara has connected the SCN Congregation with over 6,000 former students, has hosted numerous gatherings around the United States, and has recently formed a national Alumni Advisory Council. Highlights of the Journey
Three congregations of women religious sponsor Economics and Ministry Workshop at Nazareth Margaret Hohman, SCN of the Office of Global Ministries, describes the Economics and Ministry workshop held at Nazareth February 8-10 as “a resounding success.” The workshop entitled “Economics and Ministry: How are they related?” was jointly sponsored by Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, the Dominicans of St. Catharine, Kentucky and the Sisters of Loretto. SCNs Rita Davis (left) and Lorena Fleischmann Economic issues, both domestic and present in mime a skit depicting the gap between international, are gaining an increasing degree of importance in the work of social the rich and the poor at the Economics and Ministry Workshop held at Nazareth. justice. Because of the complexity of economic issues, the need to have an expert provide background information to guide in making decisions for action is increasingly important. Sister Amata Miller, IHM, using her years of study of economics and the Social Teachings of the Church, detailed the context with an insightful description of the history, growth and present importance of these topics.
Social Ministry not only demands an in-depth knowledge of the issue to be addressed, it also challenges the minister to develop a spirituality that supports one in such a ministry. Another expert, Halifax Sister of Charity, Sister Marie Elena Dio, provided a deeply moving exploration of the role contemplative prayer plays in the daily preparation for the ministry of social action. Besides members of the sponsoring religious communities, participants included a number of laity and members of other religious communities in the area. Some came from as far away as St. Louis and Denver to attend.
The next issue of SCN Journey will be published in Fall 2002
We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
