Sisters of Charity of Nazareth elect new Central Leadership Team The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have elected a new Central Leadership Team that reflects the diversity of the Congregation. Elections took place during the second week of the General Assembly held at Nazareth June 1-14, 2003. Shalini D’Souza, SCN, a native of Bombay India, was elected President and SCNs Julie Driscoll of Louisville, Ky. and Barbara Flores of Punta Gorda, Belize were elected Vice Presidents. Sister Shalini is the first President of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth from India and Sister Barbara is the first native of Belize to serve in SCN leadership. Sister Shalini is currently serving as Vice President of the Congregation, and has previously served as India Provincial. Sister Julie is the former Executive Director of House of Ruth, a non-profit agency serving families and individuals with AIDS in Louisville, Ky. Sister Barbara teaches theology at St. John College in Belize City, Belize and serves as the Congregation’s Director of Vocations and Formation for Belize. The newly-elected members of this SCN leadership team will begin serving their terms September 1, 2003. They will replace the current SCN President, Maria Vincent Brocato of Clarksdale, Miss., and Vice President Mary Elizabeth Miller of Wilmington, Del. They have served the congregation since 1998 along with SCN Vice President Shalini D’Souza. Nearly 300 SCNs and Associates from Belize, Botswana, India, Nepal and the United States attended the General Assembly, which celebrated the internationalism of the Congregation. The theme for the gathering was “WE Join in a Sacred Journey to Serve with Love.” During the General Assembly the Congregation recommitted itself to “enfleshing the Mission Statement more radically

The General Assembly opened with a presentation on Multiculturalism by Marie Chin, Religious Sister of Mercy. Sister Marie said at this moment in time the SCN Congregation is “calling forth in song the many voices of Church in our world. We will dance — hand in hand with the poor, the suffering, the oppressed, the imprisoned — twirling, whirling, into the steps of God, and God’s Reign will come.” Sisters and Associates heard reports on the
progress and status of the Congregation to assist with strategic planning and had the opportunity to participate in discussions regarding international, mission/ministry, personal and Congregational issues in order to set future directions. They also enjoyed a Mass of Pentecost, daily liturgies and prayer services, and evening entertainment and socials. On June 8 the outgoing Central Leadership Team was honored in a ritual of Gratitude. In a closing prayer of the Assembly they affirmed the three newly-elected women and thanked those who participated in the election process. The next General Assembly will be held in Mokama, India in 2008.
“Jesus is alive in each of us and in each one of those we serve. Our goal is ever to continue to share the good news of Jesus…” – SCN President Maria Vincent Brocato, in her opening address to the 2003 SCN General Assembly.

Postcards from the Journey
SCN Mary Ransom Burke writes story of SCNs in Belize The recently-published book We Drank the Water: Nazareth in Belize was truly a labor of love for Mary Ransom Burke, SCN. In 1982 she became a part of the SCN mission in Belize, which had been founded in 1975. However, five years after Sister Mary Ransom returned to the U.S. the passion for Belize, its people, and the SCN ministry there continued to be part of her. On the advent of “retirement” in 1990, she began research for her book. “I have attempted to recreate the magic and the pain of this much-loved country, poised with hope at the beginning of the twenty-first century,” said Sister Mary Ransom. We Drank the Water tells the story of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Belize during a time of global, religious, and political change. As time turned into the last quarter of the twentieth century, Belize evolved from an obscure, exotic, unfettered land where poverty and modest wealth coexisted in strains of African, Indian, Mexican
cultures, where politicos saw little to covet and less to fight for. In that final spin, the nation came alive and reached an independence it had previously resisted with Mary Ransom uneasiness. Burke, SCN
In that quarter, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth went to Belize to work in a single parish. Once there, “they drank the water” and fell under the spell of the legend that promises/warns “if you drink the water, you will return.” They found themselves returning repeatedly, becoming involved in the development of a lay ministry program driven by the winds of change of Vatican II. They have worked in Dangriga, Independence, Belize City, San Antonio, and San Ignacio. In We Drank the Water Sister Mary Ransom brings their adventure to life, revealing how they came to love the people, their customs, their languages, and their art. Following their story draws readers to retrace their path.
“No one simply serves. All people everywhere are in service to one another,” Sister Mary Ransom said of the SCN ministry in Belize. “The manner of service may be as varied as are the flowers of the field, all growing out of the same soil. Ministry of all kinds is love in action growing out of the soil of Divine love, the hope of global survival. Such was the service to which SCNs were called in 1974 …” Sister Mary Ransom is a native of Louisville, Ky., where she has taught and worked in positions of administration and communication for

much of her life. Educated at St. Brigid School, Presentation Academy and Nazareth College (now Spalding University), she became a member of the SCN Community in 1933. She taught at Holy Name School in Louisville and St. Mary’s Academy in Paducah, Ky. She obtained a doctorate in English from Fordham University in New York and taught in the English Department at Nazareth College, Louisville, before serving as academic dean there from 19501960. She has also served the SCN community in central administration and communications. After returning from Belize she became a member of the faculty at Divine Word College in Epworth, Iowa. We Drank the Water: Nazareth in Belize is published by Harmony House Publishers, Louisville, Ky. and is available in paperback through the Catherine Spalding Bookshop at Nazareth for a cost of $12. SCNs partner with lay staff to celebrate Nepali New Year for street children Teresa Madassery, SCN is accustomed to finding God in the people of Nepal, especially through her work with the mentally handicapped patients treated at Navjyoti Centre in Kathmandu. Recently, through the inspiration of a lay staff person, she and other staff members there found a way to reach out to the street children of Kathmandu. Here she tells the story of how one man’s generosity inspired a new way to welcome a new year in Nepal. Mukti Suvedi is a newly-appointed staff member of Navjyoti Centre. Though he has completed a Bachelor of Business Studies degree, he is interested in social work. After paying him, I asked him what he would do with his first salary. In reply with a generous smile he told me he would spend it for his “friends.” Seeing the surprise on my face, he said, “The children on the street are really my friends. I enjoy the moments spent with them. Their smiles make me feel good and happy.” He indicated that he wanted to do something more for them than simply give
them money. Street children in Kathmandu are abandoned by their families or they have run away from their homes. The causes leading to their condition are a breakdown within the family – financial, emotional or physical – and the child’s experiencing feelings of neglect and rejection, illiterate parents, poverty, peer group influence, remarriage of parents, broken families, lack of care and love from parents, domestic violence, alcoholic parents, etc. They are deprived of their basic human dignity and childhood. Every day we see them on streets carrying a sack, collecting plastics and rags. They are forced to get into child labor, prostitution, stealing and begging. I had always wanted to work with street children of Kathmandu, but I was not so sure how to get to them. This gave me an opportunity to do something for them. Accordingly we planned for a gathering where we could celebrate the Nepali New Year on 1st Baishak 2060 (April 14, 2003) with these children by providing
them with a medical check up, meals, medicine, clothes, haircuts, baths, and entertainment. We had planned this program to understand their struggles, pains, living conditions and problems; to provide an opportunity for them to come together to have fun, to allow them to experience love and care, and to know what can be done for them on a regular basis. The dreams and plans of bringing the street children to the center became a reality on Nepali New Year’s Day. Prior to the program these children were picked up from different places of Kathmandu valley -Jawalkhel, Lagankhel,
When we brought them into Navjyoti Centre we were overjoyed to see the children, trainees, volunteers, staff, doctors and sisters all join together in celebrating the day, making it a joyful one for all. Children who came with fear, anger, uncertainty and dirt went back clean, happy, satisfied and with great eagerness to come back to Navjyoti. All those who worked on this program expressed happiness at celebrating the New Year in a new way with the street children of Kathmandu.
HAPPY NEW YEAR: Teresa Madassery, SCN and the staff of the Navjyoti Centre in Kathmandu celebrated the Nepali New Year (April 14) in a non-traditional way – by ministering to the city’s street children. Here, Navjyoti Centre employee Mukti Suvedi and other staff members oversee a meal provided for the hungry children.

SCN Associates and OCA Staff travel to Belize for Mission experience Connie Rotters Blake, SCNA, was one of 16 Associates, friends and staff members from the SCN Office of Congregational Advancement who traveled to Belize March 21-31 to learn about the country, to work side by side with SCNs and Belizean Associates in a variety of service projects, and to share in spiritual reflection. Here, she shares her impressions of this journey of both geography and the heart... Following Catherine Spalding’s pioneer spirit with bags and passports in hand, 16 SCNAs, friends and OCA staff recently traveled to Belize for a Mission/service experience. The journey meant leaving behind comforts, conveniences and security of “home” and stepping out of one’s personal “box.” It meant traveling during a time of war and being open to “graced moments,” facing breath-stealing heat, bunk beds, crowded taxi and bus rides, dusty roads and drinking gallons of water. But it also meant embracing and being embraced by a people for whom the Spirit of the Living God is everpresent, who enjoy

Alumni Journeys
Some things change… A small group from the SCN Alumni Advisory Council is providing ideas and feedback for new alumni goals. In order to continue involvement with SCNs and their values, advisors from Louisville, Alice McKinley, Annette Skees, Marian Schwind and Martha Bennett met
with Alumni Director Barbara Qualls and Barbara Peterson, SCN, to discuss upcoming alumni activities. Possibilities include Mother-Daughter and Mother-Granddaughter activities at Nazareth, including High Tea; a One-Day-One-Night workshop – “Art for the Health of It,” and a three-day seminar on Midlife/Longlife Decision Making. Young Partners on the Journey: St. Rita School in Louisville, Ky. recently donated more than $1,500 to the SCN mission in Botswana. The schoolchildren were touched after hearing a presentation from OCA staff members about people in the deserts of Botswana who don’t have enough water. As a result, the students decided to place collection containers by each of the school’s water fountains for the annual Lenten project. Each student and faculty member was asked to donate a penny for each drink of water. “We did this to make us more aware of the
that individuals will be the best they can be and that they’ll not forget to do something for their neighbors,” she explained. “That’s what is behind the current plans for activity at Nazareth and other locations where alums are concentrated.” All alums will receive information about activities as soon as the programs are developed.

Dr. Lanning also encouraged those invited to her graduation festivities at Spalding University, where she earned her Ed.D., to make donations to the SCN mission in Botswana in lieu of personal gifts. These sacrifices by the students, faculty and staff of St. Rita’s school will make a difference for those suffering in Botswana.

Legacy Society Members honored at Nazareth Mass Members of the SCN Legacy Society gathered at Nazareth on Sunday, April 27, for the annual Mass offered in their honor. Those members who could not be present sent prayer requests which were posted in the back of St. Vincent Church. Members who attended the liturgy joined the Congregation for dinner in LEAVING A LEGACY: SCN Legacy Society Members (from the Motherhouse Dining Room. left to right) Bob Fugazzi, Patsy O’Toole, Nora Ballard, Jane Yen, Mary Boyce, and Trudi Maish were honored in As she welcomed the group, Kitty Wilson, SCN explained that an annual Mass at Nazareth on April 27, 2003. the SCN Legacy Society was established to recognize individuals who have remembered the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in their estate plans – either through a bequest, as beneficiary of a life insurance policy, through the donor’s retirement benefit, or by establishing a trust. The generosity of these individuals helps to enable future SCN ministry to the poor around the world.
The “legacy,” a bond in faith the SCNs wish to share, had its origin in 1812 on the Kentucky frontier. That SCN legacy of charity, now deeply rooted in Belize, Botswana, India, Nepal and the U.S., continues to grow. Through the years, gifts from estate plans have played a significant role in providing the resources for that growth. “It’s important to me to know that I can continue to be part of those things I believe in, even beyond my lifetime,” said Nora Ballard, SCNA. “It’s a simple way to let the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth know that I believe in their Mission and want to be part of it.” For more information about the SCN Legacy Society or how you can become a member, contact Kitty Wilson, SCN at OCA, P.O. Box 9, Nazareth, KY 40048; kwilson@scnazarethky.org, (502) 348-1520.
We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
