SCN Family celebrates five years of presence in Botswana Imagine everyone between 15 and 60 years of age living in your area being gone. What would that do to the legal, educational and justice systems? What would happen to the economy? How would life and family in general be altered? Those were challenging questions Emily Nabholz, SCN, used when talking about Botswana at Nazareth in January. Pictured are back row (L-R): Tootsie Gish, One doesn’t have to imagine an answer to Sister Emily’s SCNA, and SCNs Emily Nabholz and Ann questions in Botswana, where death is an every day reality Muthukattil. Will God also use gloves to touch me?” A woman from Botswana suffering from HIV/AIDS.
Last year, the congregation marked five years of presence in Botswana. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth continue to respond to the overwhelming needs of the sub-Saharan country where one in three adults is affected by AIDS. SCNs first arrived in Botswana in September 2000. SCNs Angela Hicks and Patricia Huitt from the United States and Sarita Manavalan, Nalini Meachariyill and Ann Muthukattil from India embraced the challenge of
learning the Setswana language and understanding local customs in order to provide medical, educational and pastoral ministry to the people of Botswana. Since the first SCN mission in Botswana was established in Kanye, ministries have expanded to include two additional sites, Mogoditshane and Lobatse. In 2004, SCNs Vinaya Chalil and Prisca Tirkey left India to serve in Botswana. In Lobatse, Sisters Ann and Prisca staff the large parish and day care center. In Mogoditshane, Sisters Vinaya and Nalini provide physical, emotional and spiritual comfort to marginalized AIDS patients. Sister Nalini writes: “AIDS patients long for human touch. One day as I embraced a patient, she cried a lot and said, ‘Today I feel that I am a human being because you touched me. My mother is so afraid to touch me that she uses gloved hands even to comb my hair. Have I become so untouchable? Will God also use gloves to touch me?’” The SCN presence in Kanye is growing. Sister Pat continues to serve as pastoral minister in the parish and its ten outstations. Sisters Sarita and Angela have responded to other ministry calls in India and in the U.S. A report issued by Fides, the Vatican missionary news agency, stated that within a few years the number of children in Africa orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic will reach 18 million; every minute in Africa, one child contracts HIV and one child dies of AIDS. Lay persons as well as SCNs continue to answer the call to ministry in Botswana. In 2005, SCN Associate Tootsie Gish spent three months in Botswana exploring mission opportunities and is presently contemplating future ministry there. Just as SCN founder Catherine Spalding was drawn to the orphans and Young Botswanan students celebrate during a sick on the streets of Louisville, Ky., in the 1800s, kindergarten graduation ceremony in Lobatse.

“We and our Associates are committed to work for justice...” SCN Mission Statement
Our Lady of Nazareth welcomes new principal At Our Lady of Nazareth Academy in Wakefield, Mass., “it’s all about the girls.” The school’s motto states it. Those who teach, study and work at OLN embody that phrase. But on Jan. 5 it was especially all about two women during a ceremony held in the OLN auditorium. The celebration highlighted Maria Melendez, SCN Associate and eight-month interim principal at OLN, who passed command to a new principal, Joanne Forker, Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph (CSJ). Commencing a series of speeches, Sheila Doherty, alumna and secretary of the OLN board of directors, talked about the all-girl high school founded by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth as an organization committed to work in the spirit of Catherine Spalding, promoting and educating tomorrow’s women-leaders. “The SCNs hold the promise of what this school is, has been, and will be. Their thumbprint is at the very core of what this school is all about,” Sheila told the audience. “Girls, what you learn here will affect the decisions you will make for the rest of your life.” Next, the lineup of speakers featured Eleanor Martin, SCN and Vice Provincial of the Western Province, who praised Maria’s contributions and welcomed Sister Joanne to her new job.“We, Sisters of Charity, are proud of OLN, its past and its present,” Sister Eleanor said, adding the congregation is also committed to the school’s promising future. She further commended Maria, who, “delayed the enjoyment of her retirement” to serve as interim principal and commuted for eight months from her home in Connecticut. Joanne Forker, CSJ, talks about her passion of educating young women and her new role as principal of OLN.
However, what was meant to be a short period of time as principal at OLN turned out to be an insightful journey for both Maria and her students. The imprint she left on the school was obvious in the intense applause of the crowd and the emotion of her interactions with the audience. “I have had the richest professional experience of my life here at OLN,” Maria said. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” She spoke candidly of the girls and left them with a Spanish poem of much depth and relevance: “Continue your journey but please make sure that truth and justice are your constant companions.” In recognition of her guidance, the board of directors awarded Maria with an OLN engraved chair, while students surprised her with a card and a ticket to her native country – Puerto Rico. Fittingly ringing down the curtain on the event was Maria Melendez, SCN Associate and former interim principal of OLN, receives a chair with the OLN logo during a ceremony held in January. Sister Joanne. With an extensive teaching background, she is also committed to continuing a legacy precious to her and the SCNs – educating young women. “I am standing on the shoulders of giants as I join the line of Catherine Spalding and the Sisters of Charity,” she said. “I cannot tell you how impressed I am already with your daughters, your students.” OLN is much like the all-girl school in Long Island where Sister Joanne was educated. Thus, coming to OLN to take on her role, was similar to “coming home,” she said. “This is the training ground for your beautiful young daughters.” Maria and Sister Joanne will continue to work together for the rest of the school year as the new principal settles in.

Destination: India Pioneer Missionary to India shares memories If “home is where the heart is,” for Ann Roberta Powers, SCN, home has been mostly about 8,000 miles away from the country of her birth—the U.S.A.—in India. On a recent visit to Kentucky, she shared stories of her journey and 57 fruitful years of ministry in India. Sister Ann Roberta, now 80, embarked on a life of mission work in India one month shy of her 23rd birthday. In late October 1947, she and two other SCNs boarded a cargo ship in Brooklyn, N.Y., for a month-long voyage weaving through renowned world ports to reach final destination, Bombay, in December. As the Statue of Liberty disappeared from sight, they thought they would never see it again. “When we went, we thought we went for life.” But there was nothing unusual about making such a commitment, because, as early as the fourth grade, Sister Ann Roberta knew she was to be a missionary. “India is where the Lord sent me,” she explained. Since arriving in India, Sister Ann Roberta has changed locations several times in order to respond to different needs — teaching, offering medical care, counseling and other services in various areas such
as Mokama, Ranchi, Gaya, Chatra and Patna. Her deep care for the people of India has always been at the core of her work. It took early SCNs one month Whether to reach India by boat. giving vital medicine to The SCN Pioneers of India standing before a locals with high fever or malaria statue of Mother Catherine. Although her journeys were filled with what some might describe as dangerous obstacles – wild animals, venomous snakes, an angry tigress, scorpions, famine, disease and violence, a special care from divine providence kept her safe and focused, she said. “I was afraid for other people, but never for myself,” she added with a smile. “When we went, we thought we went for life…India is where the Lord sent me,” Ann Roberta Powers, SCN.

After helping establish Nazareth Hospital her first year in India, together with three SCNs newly arrived from the U.S.A., Sister Ann Roberta went to Nazareth Academy in Gaya — an English medium school with a student population today of about 2,000. The student body also includes 200 disadvantaged children who come at the close of the school day. In schools, to deal with cultural constraints and segregation between sexes, the SCNs in India established the policy of reserving one-half of the desks for girls and one-half for boys. In addition to an English school, Sisters helped open and taught in a Hindispeaking school in Gaya. ”You have to speak Hindi,” she explained. “We made many mistakes, but the people were very patient with us.” In May 2005, Sister Ann Roberta returned to the SCN campus. And like the first time she embarked on the cargo ship that would take her to a life of adventure, the Sister took a quicker way — a flight — back to Gaya in January with the intent to remain and serve there for an undetermined period of time. She does not know whether she will ever return to Nazareth but she admits she’s truly “home” in her vocation.

Destination: Belize “Treasured Women” travel to Belize
Above: The “Treasured Women” group met at the Louisville Airport to begin the journey to Belize. Below: Leslie Wilson and Mary Boyce stood for a 90-minute bus ride from Belmopan to Belize City.
For nine months the past year, seven women, using Rosemary Williams’ book, A Woman’s Book of Money and Spiritual Vision, Vision met to explore thoughts, feelings, and personal history of finances in light of each one’s values and spirituality. The ultimate goal of the group, “Treasured Women”, is to empower women to
integrate these three aspects of life. The experience culminated in January with a transformational immersion experience in Belize, Central America. Patsy O’Toole, Director of Congregational Advancement explains, “We spent nine months exploring our inner world of finance, values and spirituality. Our trip to Belize helped us place all that in a global context.” Mary Boyce, Nora Ballard, Leslie Wilson, Margaret Rose Williams, and Patsy O’Toole visited the ministry sites of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Belize City and Belmopan; traveled to Dangriga and joined SCN Associates there; visited a crafts cooperative run by 4

Leslie Wilson helped a Belizean child fix his bicycle while a local girl watched closely. Mayan women in Maya Center; and hiked through the rainforest. Two evenings were spent with Sylvia Flores, Minister of Human Development for the country. An experience with two young girls in Belmopan stands out in the hearts of the travelers as a key moment of the trip. “We were visiting with Sister Higinia when I went outside to take some pictures,” Nora Ballard, SCNA recalls. “Two young girls (12 and 10 years of age) rode up on their bicycles. They asked if I would be interested in buying some of the items which they and their mother had made. One girl handed me a note that was folded over and over and then crumpled into her hand as they rode along. I opened it and read the note from their pastor explaining that the girls were trying to raise money for their mother’s surgery. I called to my friends to come out and look also. One by one they pulled out artwork, bracelets and bookmarks from a small bag. They described the different pieces and proudly showed us the ones they themselves had made. They watched us admire the bracelets and carefully choose which ones we would buy. As they re-packed their bags, they kept out two bracelets and gave one to me and one to Leslie, saying they were for free. What a powerful, humbling gift from two young girls with such a heavy weight of responsibility!” A new “Treasured Women” group is being formed in early Spring 2006. An optional transformational immersion experience will be offered. If you are interested in joining this group or want more information, contact: Leslie Wilson, P.O. Nazareth ring mystery is solved A mystery was solved this winter. It was of an unusual nature – a class ring from Louisville, Ky. had been found by a goldsmith in Germany. The goldsmith, in a search for the rightful owner, tracked down Theresa Knabel, SCN. Sister Theresa received the first e-mail message from Regina “Gina” M. Jaene of Schieder-Schwalenberg, Germany, on September 9, 2005. Dear Ladies, First I want to say sorry for my english. It’s long ago I learned it in school. I’ll try to explain why I’m writing to you today: I’m a goldsmith. Many years ago somebody sold me a ring, which he has founded. He had given it to the lost property office, but nobody applied for the ring. I kept the ring all the years (I think longer then 12 years) in my gold-box. Some weeks ago I wanted to melt it down, but when I look exactly at the ring, I discovered the name of your university. I tried to find out your address, that was very difficult, many nice people in the net helped me. Now my question: is it possible for you to find the person, who is the owner of this ring? The monogramm is B S and the year is 1957. Perhaps you have some supporting documents who allow to find out whose ring this is. I would be VERY glad, if it would be possible to give the ring back to the owner. If you find out who the owner is, please give my address to her. If you cant find it out...is it interesting for you to get the ring? Perhaps for a museum? It would be wonderful to get a message from you. It’s a very exciting story for me. Schone Grusse Regina M. Jaene Sister Theresa responded and another e-mail arrived. Dear Sister Theresa, Thank you for your letter, I’m very glad to hear from you. The name of the college which is written on the ring is “Nazareth College”. I just discovered the engraved initials on the inside: it says”EEM”. I also had the idea to ask a newspaperman, but I thought it wouldn’t be succesful in Germany. If it will be in the newspaper, can you please send me the article?? It gets more exiting now!!! Schöne Grüsse aus Deutschland.
Above: Nazareth College Ring. Right: Goldsmith Regina M. Jaene
While Gina was contacting the media in Germany hoping to track down the owner of the ring, Sister Theresa had contacted a reporter in Louisville. Articles appeared in both a German newspaper and in The Courier Journal. Not long after a column appeared in The Courier Journal, Sister Theresa received an e-mail from the author, columnist Bob Hill. Sister, I e-mailed Gina the new address and phone numbers for Emma. It’s Emma Benford of Astoria, Oregon. I spoke briefly with her and will do a follow-up column soon. bob hill Sister Teresa shared the news with Gina who quickly wrote back. Hallo Theresa Bob even mailed that he found the owner....He spoke with her and she told him that her husband was in Germany 30 years ago. She lost the ring, but didn’t now where and when. Such a long time!!I`m sooo happy about this! It’s really a great day! That we succeed! Unbelievable. A little ring, the big world, 30 years...and now it turns back!! I’ll write a letter to Emma now. I would like to speak a better english to tell you how glad I am, and how much I thank you for helping to find her. And the same to Bob Hill and Thorsten Engelhard and the other people who helped to find out your adress! A way with many people who all shared the dream of the reunion. I will sleep very well tonight or perhaps not...... Ganz viele liebe Grüsse von Gina And this is where the mystery ends for the time being, as we wait to hear more from the rightful owner of the ring as to how the ring from Louisville, Ky., wound up lost in Germany. In the meantime, new friendships have been forged between a goldsmith in Germany, a Sister in Louisville, and two journalists.

Together on the Journey “Ah India” SCN Lay Mission Volunteer in India Kristen Iworsky shares the depth of what it means to leave one’s homeland and enter into another land’s culture, traditions and norms: “The word ah encompasses love, disgust, frustration and acceptance. It is also a word of surprise and wonder. perhaps for those of us foreigners who have tried to know this place “ah India” is the only way our chaos of emotion can be expressed.”
Kristen Iworski, SCN Lay Mission Volunteer in India, with her students at St. Vincent’s Matriculation School.
From India Poems by Waswo X. Waswo, these few stanzas seem to express my feelings as I have been here the last three months, and I am sure they will describe my remaining time in India. “Ah India.” In the introduction to his poetry, Waswo writes, “It’s really not uncommon to love and hate India simultaneously, but most visitors will agree that it is impossible to keep from being swept with intense emotion.” To me this intense emotion has come as gratitude, joy, shock, frustration, and perhaps most of all, intense loneliness. And then, there is always the feeling of hope that sneaks its way into my day. The feelings of gratitude are often present when I am with the children. One sunny, hot morning, a preschool child, Nirmal Raj, and I sat on the bench. He was crying at this start of the day because he was homesick. Perhaps, he too felt the loneliness I felt at the time, the longing for home and the familiar. Yet, sitting beside him, I felt comfort. His sobs ceased and we sat there watching the other children play. Joy comes also when I am with the children. When the Asha Deepam School (the school for the mentally challenged) put on the Christmas program, I felt so joyous, so proud of these beautiful children who had worked so hard. Shock and frustration come nearly every day. It doesn’t shock me anymore to have a lizard fall on my head. That has become quite common. But everything seems to be a new experience in India. I feel loneliness every day. It is not necessarily a bad thing. It is this loneliness that is strengthening me each day, teaching me how others in the U.S. must feel when they come to the country as refugees or immigrants. I will go home understanding them a little more. I have many hopes, perhaps most of all, I hope I am making a difference. And lastly, I’d like to hope, that on that hot morning not long ago, as I sat on the bench with Nirmal Raj, that he felt the comfort that I felt… that he felt that things would be OK. We would make it through the day. We had each other.
“Ah India.”
Catherine Spalding Center hosts Sponsored Ministries Conference The Western Province Office of Sponsored Ministries hosted a conference November 6-8 at Catherine Spalding Center for board members and administrators of the nine sponsored apostolic works of the Western Province. SCN, Inc. board members attended along with SCNs and Associates who were invited to be part of a pool for future board membership. The theme “Partnering for Mission” was explored as well as the topic of sponsorship. Karen Wunderlin, an organizational consultant, led interactive sessions on the stages of board and organizational development, which assisted individual boards to assess where they are and plan specific action steps for the future. Alice Hession, SCN Inc. board member presented a session on the evolving dimensions of sponsorship. Mary Haynes, administrator and CEO of Nazareth Home, chats with Nardine Aquadro, SCN, during the Sponsored Ministries Conference. 6 Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Winter 2006
Reflecting on the conference, Sister Maria Vincent Brocato, director of the Office of Sponsored Ministries stated, “The image that stays with me is at the beginning of the conference when we were introducing ourselves. I saw that collection of competent and dedicated people who are walking with us in our ministry. That is so reassuring and hopeful.”
Partners in Ministry SCN Associate shares her gift of photography Trudi Maish, SCN Associate, has been taking photographs since she was twelve years old. She almost always has a camera near at hand. A professional photographer, Trudi is a graduate of Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, Calif. Her compelling photos are well known to the SCN Family. In fact, she is so passionate about Nazareth that in 1992, she decided to sell her successful photography business, Maish McMillan Studios, and move from Louisville, Ky. to Bardstown, Ky. “Photographically, I thought I might be able to contribute to the Community,” she explained. Trudi drives through the campus at least two or three times a day on her way to and from her home. Something almost always catches her eye. She tells the story of the night when she noticed the full moon in the skies over St. Vincent Church and waited patiently for it to appear between the two steeples. That was how she captured “St. Vincent Moon,” the photo which is featured in the SCN Heritage Hall Museum.
Above: St. Vincent Moon Right: Dogwoods Top: Trudi Maish, SCN Associate, right, with Eleanor Martin, SCN Western Vice Provincial.
Trudi’s ties to the SCN Congregation go back more than 30 years. When she was photographing students at Presentation Academy, she became friends with Susan Gatz, SCN, who at that time was English teacher and yearbook advisor. “Susan became my best friend, and through her I have met lots of SCNs,” Trudi recalled. “That feeling that I get with Susan, I get with all of them…I always feel welcome.”
Among the many gifts Trudi shares with the Community are the countless photographs depicting moments in the SCN mission and history – such as SCN gatherings and the many SCN ministry sites around the world. She has been deeply touched by her visits to Belize and India. “To be able to get up close with the people that the SCNs are living and working with, one can see in their eyes they are suffering, but so many of these people still seem happy.” Photos by Trudi Maish are available at the Catherine Spalding book shop on the Nazareth campus. Ministry Highlights: Founder of Nazareth Montessori Children’s Center honored
Pat Hill, SCN, slipped into a cozy outfit during Pajama Day at Nazareth Montessori Children’s Center.
Patricia Marie Hill, SCN, has been inducted into the Bardstown-Nelson County Hall of Fame. During the ceremony in October, Sister Pat, Nazareth Montessori Children’s Center founder and teacher, was honored for her tireless work with young students. Praises in recognition of Sister Pat’s work and devotion outpoured from friends, co-workers and students she has touched. “Sister Pat is a remarkable woman,” said Mary Cantrell, Montessori director. “I marvel at how, after 50 plus years of teaching, 32 of those here at Nazareth Montessori, she continues to get excited when a child learns something new.” Excitement is also the jolting feeling boys and girls at Montessori emanate when speaking of their teacher. “She’s very nice,” Jonah, 6, said. “She teaches us a lot of things.” Corby, also 6, intervened, “She helps me count backwards; every day I learn something new.” She later admitted she was afraid of math and numbers before meeting Sister Pat. Corby now loves the class. For Michael Andrew, 5, nature walks and examining insects are the highlights of the time he spends with Sister Pat. It was under her guidance that he learned how to recycle, let bugs live and care for the earth. But there was one thing all of the children mentioned as they enumerated the joys of having Sister Pat in the classroom – her teaching of Christian friendship. The Christian Friendship Program at Montessori is one of the school’s unique elements coined by Sister Pat. Through the program, students learn about caring for one another and the earth. The nomination forms received by the Chamber prior to electing the 2005 inductees spoke of Sister Pat as being the guiding force behind more than 1,000 children in Nelson County since the inception of the Montessori Program. She was credited with inspiring values that extend beyond the classroom setting. Sister Pat also infuses her fellow teachers with the same inspiration she carries for the children. “She is a wonderful mentor to me and to the teachers here,” Mary said. After receiving her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education, Sister Pat completed Montessori training at the Michigan Montessori Center. She has dedicated most of her life to teaching – chiefly in Ohio and Kentucky. During the award presentation, Sister Pat recognized the role of faith in her profession. “The breadth of my whole work has been my dependence on God,” she told the audience.
Painting dedicated at St. William Parish A painting created in recognition of the SCNs’ support was dedicated Dec. 18 during a Liturgy at St. William Church in Louisville, Ky. Thanks in large part to support from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, CrossRoads, an outreach program at St. William, has reached its sixth year of operation. More than 3,000 young people have taken part in the program, sharing their faith and stories, encountering neighbors, building “unlikely” friendships by walking the streets of the inner city and by investigating the social implications of their faith. The painting entitled “Young Prophets Sing!” is the work of artist Emily Wilcox. Several members of the SCN Family attended the December dedication. 8

More than 250 SCNs and SCN Associates came together on Nazareth campus to attend the Western Province Gathering Nov. 18- 20. The gathering was part of a Visioning/Planning process for the province. Two key questions of the process were: “What is the expression of our charism and mission for these times in the Western Province?” and “What is God calling forth in us at this time?” During the three days, the participants examined current SCNs Betty Blanford and realities of the Congregation and, Mary Burns visit during the in conversations with one another, Western Province Gathering. expressed dreams and hopes for the future of the province. A song by Jennifer Corlett, OSU and Mark Hobson that reverberated throughout the gathering asked the question “Can you remember the vision, the dream and the courage to love for life?”
Mary Ellen Doyle, SCN, Ph.D., joined French scholars of the works of Ernest J. Gaines for a symposium Nov. 4 in Paris. The symposium took place at the same time the French capital was being disrupted by fiery riots last year, but the conference went on without disturbance. Sister Mary Ellen attended the event at the invitation of the University of Tours. She presented a paper entitled “Forms of Slavery, Forms of Freedom: The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.” Some of Gaines’ more well-known titles are Of Love and Dust, In My Father’s House, A Gathering of Old Men, A Lesson Before Dying and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. The latter was placed by the French government on the reading list for “Agrégation” – a highly competitive national examination which teachers must pass for promotion to the secondary level or for entry into university teaching.

The SCN Legacy Society was formed to recognize and celebrate persons who have chosen to name the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in their estate plans. This can be as simple as naming the SCN Congregation as a beneficiary in a will, a life insurance policy, or establishing a charitable trust. By doing this, individuals insure the mission of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth into the future. It is a way to leave a legacy beyond your lifetime - - a testimony to the things and people you value in life. If you would like further information, please feel free to contact Leslie A. Wilson, Office of Congregational Advancement at (502) 348-1551.

Earthcare Festival unfolded at Nazareth SCNs, Associates and the larger community had an opportunity to enrich their environment knowledge during Earthcare Festival, October - November, 2005. The event showed five films which covered a variety of topics for the environmentally-conscious, ranging from the importance of water, the perils of suburban living, Eastern Kentucky strip mining to energy conservation. The movies, shown during the months of October and November at Nazareth, were “Thirst,” “The End of Suburbia,” “Kilowatt Ours,” “Sludge” and “To Save the Land and People.” Brenda Gonzales, SCN, Director of Initial Formation and organizer of the festival, was pleased with the audience the movies attracted. Audience members were asked to write their feelings on the issues portrayed in the movies, which resulted in a compilation of powerful and personal quotes. The Ursuline and the Dominican Sisters participated by showing the same movies at different times in Louisville and in Springfield. For those who missed the Earthcare Festival, all five films may be checked out at the Media Center on Nazareth campus. To further raise community awareness, a festival on multicultural diversity unfolded at Nazareth and in collaboration with other campuses during the month of January.

We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and cooperatively, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
