SCN Family celebrates five years of presence in Botswana Imagine everyone between 15 and 60 years of age living in your area being gone. What would that do to the legal, educational and justice systems? What would happen to the economy? How would life and family in general be altered? Those were challenging questions Emily Nabholz, SCN, used when talking about Botswana at Nazareth in January. Pictured are back row (L-R): Tootsie Gish, One doesn’t have to imagine an answer to Sister Emily’s SCNA, and SCNs Emily Nabholz and Ann questions in Botswana, where death is an every day reality Muthukattil. Front row (L-R): SCNs Nalini sweeping through all age groups. Affected by AIDS and poverty, Meachariyill, Vinaya Chalil, Prisca Bilung and Pat Huitt. in many areas of the country where SCNs are present, illness and funerals have become an “Have I become so unfortunate part of residents’ daily life life. untouchable? Will God also use gloves to touch me?” A woman from Botswana suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Last year, the congregation marked five years of presence in Botswana. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth continue to respond to the overwhelming needs of the sub-Saharan country where one in three adults is affected by AIDS. SCNs first arrived in Botswana in September 2000. SCNs Angela Hicks and Patricia Huitt from the United States and Sarita Manavalan, Nalini Meachariyill and Ann Muthukattil from India embraced the challenge of

learning the Setswana language and understanding local customs in order to provide medical, educational and pastoral ministry to the people of Botswana. Since the first SCN mission in Botswana was established in Kanye, ministries have expanded to include two additional sites, Mogoditshane and Lobatse. In 2004, SCNs Vinaya Chalil and Prisca Tirkey left India to serve in Botswana. In Lobatse, Sisters Ann and Prisca staff the large parish and day care center. In Mogoditshane, Sisters Vinaya and Nalini provide physical, emotional and spiritual comfort to marginalized AIDS patients. Sister Nalini writes: “AIDS patients long for human touch. One day as I embraced a patient, she cried a lot and said, ‘Today I feel that I am a human being because you touched me. My mother is so afraid to touch me that she uses gloved hands even to comb my hair. Have I become so untouchable? Will God also use gloves to touch me?’” The SCN presence in Kanye is growing. Sister Pat continues to serve as pastoral minister in the parish and its ten outstations. Sisters Sarita and Angela have responded to other ministry calls in India and in the U.S. A report issued by Fides, the Vatican missionary news agency, stated that within a few years the number of children in Africa orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic will reach 18 million; every minute in Africa, one child contracts HIV and one child dies of AIDS. Lay persons as well as SCNs continue to answer the call to ministry in Botswana. In 2005, SCN Associate Tootsie Gish spent three months in Botswana exploring mission opportunities and is presently contemplating future ministry there. Just as SCN founder Catherine Spalding was drawn to the orphans and Young Botswanan students celebrate during a sick on the streets of Louisville, Ky., in the 1800s, kindergarten graduation ceremony in Lobatse.
