In October 2006, Nancy Gerth, SCN, attended a Human Trafficking Conference in New York sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. Sister Nancy works at Covenant House/Casa Alianza in Florida, with survivors of human trafficking. There are 22 such sites across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America. She writes about a young man who escaped the life of a drug mule and prostitute and found refuge at Covenant House Florida: Perhaps the reason this conference struck a major chord with me is that, as I listened to the speakers, the faces of a few human trafficking survivors with whom we have worked at Covenant House Florida (CHF) invaded my visual field. One in particular has stolen everyone’s heart. I’ll call him Alejandro for the purpose of this article.
Facts about human trafficking * The leading international definition of human trafficking of persons includes “…the exploitation and the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery, or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs.” * The US State Department estimates that there are 15,00018,000 persons trafficked into the United States each year. * There are 80,000-100,000 persons trafficked throughout the world each year. * Human trafficking is the third largest illegal industry after drug trafficking and trafficking of illicit arms. * The majority of traffickers are women. They recruit for different reasons and have long-established relationships in their communities. Traffickers who act as recruiters are seldom strangers. * Persons who have lived through or escaped human trafficking situations should be referred to as survivors (not victims).

Together on the journey St. Patrick Parish, Brockton, Mass.
A place where cultures meet
Jane Elizabeth O’Connell, SCN, is shown teaching an English as a Second Language (ESL) class at St. Patrick Parish, in Brockton, Mass. Sister Jane Elizabeth sees immigrants from all over the world in her ministry.
Founded in 1856, in Brockton, Mass., St. Patrick is the city’s first church. In 2006, its reputation of being a melting pot of cultures and languages became 150 years strong.
Two of Sister Jane Elizabeth’s students listen to her instructions.
St. Patrick has roots spreading all over the world. In October, its diverse parishioners remembered the SCN Community and celebrated its rich history. Since arriving at the parish in 1887, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have made many contributions in the Brockton community. “On Aug. 10, 1887, at 11 a.m., two horse-drawn carriages drove up to the door of St. Patrick’s Rectory and eight Sisters arrived,” said Jane Elizabeth O’Connell, SCN, who grew up in Brockton and attended St. Patrick grade and high school. “The rest was history.” St. Patrick School closed in 1972, and its building burned in a tragic fire in 1980. Sister Jane Elizabeth reflects, “We do have with us the memories of the hundreds of Sisters who served here through the years and our hearts are filled with gratitude toward them.” Sister Jane Elizabeth has been in ministry in Brockton since 1976. She continues to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to immigrants from various countries. Seeing the rise of the immigrant population over the years, establishing an ESL program was an early dream of one of the SCNs who worked in the parish. The program became a reality and now runs under the umbrella of Catholic Charities. SCNs also maintain a strong presence in the Brockton area through one of the Congregation’s sponsored ministries, Catherine Spalding House. “The motto of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth is ‘The love of Christ impels us,’” Sister Jane Elizabeth said as she concluded her speech at the St. Patrick 150th anniversary celebration. “The Sisters have lived this motto in our parish since 1887. May we, the friends and parishioners of St. Patrick’s, A Chinese student at St. Patrick Parish reads an English continue to spread God’s love among the people of Brockton.” textbook as she prepares for her U.S. citizenship test.

SCN honored with Silver Magnolia Award How do you comfort the victims of an armed robbery or parents who have witnessed their child being attacked by a shark? Emergency officials facing situations such as these have often turned to Rita Maria Coco, SCN. Founder of the Grief Recovery Center in Baton Rouge, La., Sister Rita Maria has touched many lives, reaching out to people in what she describes as often “the most profound moments of grief.” “This is a woman who through her giftedness, her competency, her skills but mostly through her heart and her vocation, connects with a person in a deep way, in a transformational way,” said Sister Melanie Gust, Community of the Religious of the Sacred Heart. “She is a person of substance, a person of quality, a person of commitment, a person of spirit… I encountered Christ in her.” Sister Rita Maria moved to Louisville, Ky., in the summer of 2006. Wanting to show their love and admiration, the people in the

city of Baton Rouge chose her as a recipient of the 2006 Silver Magnolia award. Two members of the congregation of the Community of the Religious of the Sacred Heart, one of them Sister Melanie, traveled from Baton Rouge to Louisville to present Sister Rita Marie with the award. The Silver Magnolia program was launched in 2004 to recognize women who are committed to helping others and who have made meaningful contributions to the community of Baton Rouge. In her nomination of Sister Rita Maria, Aileen A. Hendricks wrote: “As a teacher, administrator, counselor and spiritual guide, Sister Rita has lovingly devoted her entire life to the care of people of every
age, race, religion, gender, profession and socioeconomic level. Her enormous contribution to the betterment of the community is impossible to measure. But the rare and unique Grief Recovery Center that she founded in 1991 and continues to run is a testament to her compassion for all human beings and understanding of their needs.” While operating the Grief Recovery Center, Sister Rita Maria has reached out to many people. In some of her more unusual roles, Sister Rita Maria has served as an expert witness in court and assisted with “critical incidents” when they occurred, such as responding to the victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Tandrabong ministry grows under SCN care The areas surrounding Tandrabong, India, are so remote that the sick and injured from mountain villages were at one time carried on make-shift stretchers six-to-ten miles to wait for a jeep to take them to the hospital nine miles away. Thanks to the support of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (SCN) and members of the SCN family, the ill and injured can now receive care at a new Health and Social Center. On October 19, 2006 Bishop Stephen Lepcha of Darjeeling blessed the facility. While the ground floor and health center are up and running, construction continues on the top floor.
ABOVE -- Teresa Kotturan, SCN, right, participates in a blessing ceremony of the new Health and Social Center in Tandrabong, India. ABOVE LEFT -- The new center in Tandrabong.
It was the residents who took the first step to improve conditions in their area when they asked their Bishop to invite SCNs to come to Tandrabong. The SCNs have been in ministry there since December 2003. Almost immediately the great need for a Health and Social Center was evident to Sister Aisha Kavalakattu and companions. Villagers often had to open up their homes to handle health emergencies. Vocational classes and self-help meetings were held outdoors. “People are very, very happy and grateful to us for giving such services,” says Sister Aisha. “It is very touching to see patients being carried and brought by stretchers to our health center from far places.”
It is equally touching to see the residents attending vocational training and self-help groups at the center. SCNs believe all of the services provided by the center will help bring about social and economic change for the women, men, and children of West Bengal. Sisters of Charity of Nazareth

175
years of excellence “Indeed the Pres spirit lives on!”
It was standing room only as nearly 1,000 people gathered to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the founding of Presentation Academy. Founded in 1831 by Mother Catherine Spalding, Presentation is the oldest continuously operating high school in Louisville, Ky. Hundreds of former students gathered at the Cathedral of the Assumption on Nov. 21 to attend a special liturgy marking this historic occasion. Presentation has continued to educate students during some of the country’s most trying times--the cholera epidemic of 1832, the Civil War and two World Wars. The school has also survived two fires and the flood of 1937. Though no longer owned or operated by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (SCNs), Presentation is much loved by the Sisters, many of whom are graduates of the Academy. Several SCNs attended the celebration, two of whom, Sisters Julie Driscoll and Susan Gatz are “Pres Girls.” Sister Julie relates how excited she was to see such a large crowd celebrating this significant milestone of her alma mater. When the principal, Barbara Wine, mentioned the “senior steps” that are not used by any other class, “many memories of other parts of that historic building and all the wonderful times we had came to my mind,” said Sister Julie. She was renewed as she always is, when all present and former “Pres girls” rose to sing the Presentation school song. Sister Julie was also delighted to meet classmates from her years at Presentation. “Indeed the Pres spirit lives on!” she exclaimed. The Congregation operated the school from its founding in 1831 until 1995, when Spalding University assumed oversight. Spalding oversaw the school until Jan. 1, 2005, when Presentation Academy embarked on a new era as an independent, self-governing institution. Last summer, Chris Beckett, SCN, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., was appointed president of Presentation Academy. Sister Chris, who assumed her responsibilities in August 2006, often talks about the charism of Mother Catherine and how one can feel her presence in the halls of Presentation. FLOWERS OF LEARNING
A tribute to SCNs who taught at Spalding University, Louisville, Ky. The “Flowers of Learning” are vibrant, complex, and thought-provoking. A fitting tribute, say many of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, to the Congregation’s legacy in education. The works of art were dedicated Oct. 27, 2006, in a ceremony at Spalding University in Louisville, Ky. The exhibit by Roman Verostko, was created to honor seven deceased SCNs who taught his wife, Alice Wagstaff, PhD, at Nazareth College - SCNs Mary Emily Keenan, Mary Simeonette Savage, Mary Charlotte Fowler, Augustine Porter, Mary Ramona Mattingly, Mary Eunice Rasin, and Charles Mary Morrison. These Sisters, says Rose Howard, SCN, were well-educated and held advanced degrees at a time when few women had the opportunity to attain such an education. They earned doctorates in Latin, mathematics, history, and English. They also pursued degrees in physics, philosophy and French. Releasing these Sisters to earn advanced degrees was part of a plan by the Congregation to open a college in Louisville. Nazareth College opened in 1920 and within a decade experienced tremendous growth educating its first generation of professional women. In 1969, the Louisville campus incorporated the Nazareth, Ky., campus and was renamed Spalding College. With expanding programs, in 1984 it became Spalding University. A member of the Nazareth College class of 1941, Alice Wagstaff went on to earn a doctorate in psychology. She became an early advocate of “client centered” therapy that revolutionized the treatment of mental illness both in this country and abroad. A mentor for graduate students both in psychiatry and psychology, she is credited with helping to shape the present generation of therapists. Recalling her Nazareth years, Alice said that an education and career would have been out of reach for many young women like herself had she not been given a scholarship and the opportunity to study under the guidance and dedication of those Sisters. Wagstaff asked her husband to create the pen and ink drawings in honor of her teachers, the first generation of educators at Spalding University. FLOWERS OF LEARNING -- In an intricate computer and art program, artist Roman Verostko created abstract flowers to represent SCNs who taught at Spalding University over the years. The seven creations also included individualized inscriptions at the bottom written in a stylized alphabet. Each inscription is a snippet of poetry or prose inspired by the Sister to which the flower is dedicated. The Good Shepherd
New statues celebrate SCN-founded hospital Two stunning works of art are now part of the grounds of the new Flaget Hospital in Bardstown, Ky. With strong beliefs in the power of art to calm, reassure, cheer, and give hope to the sick, their families and those who care for them, a committee worked for more than three years to turn a vision into reality. The two works of art which were dedicated in December include “The Good Shepherd” and “Jesus and Child.” Sister Margaret Beaudette, a Sister of Charity of New York, who is known internationally, was commissioned to create the sculptures. Nora Simms, Donna Houston, Dr. Romeo Laureano, and SCNs Charlene Jacobs and Frances Krumpelman are members of the committee that oversaw the creation and installation of the works of art. Members of the Auxiliary of Flaget Hospital helped raise the funds for the sculptures and Joan Hardin worked as a liaison between the two groups. The hospital was founded by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Catholic Health Initiatives is now the parent company of Flaget Hospital. A large silver, stainless steel cross patterned after the logo used by Catholic Health Initiatives was the first work of art unveiled at Flaget Hospital. The cross is attached to the western façade of the building. TOP -- “The Good Shepherd” is located in front of Flaget Hospital in Bardstown, Ky. A prayer for the New Year: PEACE Standing shoulder to shoulder holding candles in the darkness, dozens of people gathered New Year’s Eve for a peace vigil in Louisville, Ky. The last day of the year is a traditional day of prayer for Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. It is a day when SCNs join in prayer at the same time in various locations around the world. In Louisville, Sisters came together with others from the area holding candles in a long line of people that stretched along the 2000 block of Newburg Road. The silent candlelight vigil was powerful as prayers were offered for all who had lost their lives around the world, especially in Iraq. Prayers were also said for Louisville victims of homicide in 2006. Churches from around Jefferson County were invited to join this year’s peace vigil along with representatives of No Murders Metro. SCNs say they hope the vigil sends a strong message that violence is never the answer. A participant held a candle and a peace sign during the prayer vigil.

SCN Family joins SOA protest Members of the SCN Family joined thousands at the annual School of the Americas (SOA) demonstration Nov. 18-19 at Fort Benning, Ga. SCN Family members Elizabeth and Felix Garza, their children Tomas and Annalisa, Joetta Venneman, PBVM, of the SCN Office of Global Ministries, and Mary Driscoll, MM, a member of the Social Justice Think Tank, went by bus from Louisville, Ky., to the gathering in Georgia. Sisters on the Nazareth campus prayed in solidarity with those at the SOA demonstration.

Mary Driscoll, MM, a member of the Social Justice Think Tank also attended the protest.
“The vigil is a great opportunity to stand in solidarity with a large group of people on an issue (torture) that continues to plague the United States’ reputation and actions,” said Sister Joetta. “Having ‘1,000 Grandmothers’ present was a witness that action must be taken to end torture and policies that invade the privacy and rights of average citizens who exercise their freedom of voice in a nonviolent manner.”
The SOA, now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, has been under public scrutiny since 1996. At that time the Pentagon released training manuals used at the school that advocated torture, extortion and execution. No independent investigation into the facility has ever taken place.
Multicultural workshop celebrates diversity Maria Elena Gonzalez, RSM, shared several touching stories about personal experiences of discrimination during the Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) Workshop held at Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville, Ky. The stories included one that centered on Sister Maria Elena’s fifth birthday when she and her mom were refused service at a restaurant because they were Mexican-American. This experience fueled a lifelong commitment to bring about change and acceptance. “Building Community by Celebrating Diversity, The Heart of Multiculturalism Weekend Workshop,” sponsored by the Intercongregational Multicultural Committee, was a collaborative effort of the Dominicans of St. Catharine, Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Sisters of Loretto and Ursuline Sisters of Louisville. Sister Maria Elena, president of the Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC), along with Toby Lardie, HM, OffCampus Program Coordinator for MACC, presented the workshop. “MAAC provided a very rich and in-depth weekend experience in exploring not only our own culture, but also those of other cultures,” said Peggy Masterson, SCN Associate. “The weekend enabled me to embrace my own culture and then embrace the diversity of other cultures. I came away with an SCNs Marina Thazhathuveettil, left, and Barbara understanding of some of the cultural differences in attitudes, perceptions of Flores discuss multiculturalism issues during a workshop offered by the Mexican-American Cultural power, and communication styles...” Center in Louisville, Ky.

Journeying On Jane Mary Dickman, SCN, 91, died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on Dec. 3, 2006. A native of Louisville, she
had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 59 years. Sister Jane Mary taught in schools in Kentucky, Ohio, Texas and Mississippi. She also served in SCN Community Service as secretary for the Mission Office at Nazareth. In retirement she served in the prayer ministry. Survivors include two brothers, Henry T. Dickman and Rev. John W. Dickman, both of Louisville, and several nieces and nephews. Sister Jane Mary was a quiet, unassuming person who touched many lives. She had been corresponding with Jose Jimenez, a man in a prison in Florida. When Sister Jane Mary was unable to keep up the correspondence, Mary Anne Burkardt, SCN, continued to write to Jose for her. When S. Jane Mary died, Sister Mary Anne phoned the prison chaplain and asked him to give Jose the news of Sister Jane Mary’s death. Jose sent the following response:
“I was truly saddened to hear that S. Jane Mary passed away. I know that she will be missed by all who knew her as she was a special person. I am on death row and have been writing her for 10 years. She was a real blessing and inspiration in my life and I will forever be grateful that she was a part of my life.”
Josephine Foley, SCN, formerly Sister Timothy Maria, 89, died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 24, 2006. A native of Danville, Ky., she had been a member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth for 69 years. Sister Josephine served as a teacher and librarian in elementary, secondary and college education in Kentucky, Virginia and Massachusetts. She also served as librarian at the Motherhouse. During her retirement Sister served in the prayer ministry. Survivors include one nephew, Philip Nugent Foley, Jr. of Tioga, Pa. Sister Josephine had a keen interest in the environment. She loved to watch birds and look for wildflowers. Peggy Hyland, who served as Director of an Environmental Education Program on Nazareth Campus, remembers Sister Josephine’s love for the outdoors. “I remember one time when Sister Josephine invited me over for a dinner of day lilies, dandelion buds and cattails washed down with her homemade rose hip tea. It was beautiful and delicious. She showed me her adventurous side when she took me on hikes around Nazareth grounds. Sister Josephine was a quiet person, but her radiant smile spoke volumes. I treasure the times we shared and all that she taught me. I am so grateful that our paths crossed. Knowing her was a blessing that enriched my life.”
Frances Mary Murphy, SCN, 89, died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 17, 2006. A native of Pontiac, Ill.,
she had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 71 years. In retirement Sister Frances Mary served in the Apostolate of Prayer. Survivors include one sister, Dorothy L. Gallagher of San Antonio, Texas; and four nephews.
Sister Frances Mary suffered from very poor vision due to macular degeneration. In her homily at the Mass of Resurrection, Frances Krumpelman, SCN, said, “When Sister Frances Mary came to Nazareth to retire, her sight continued to fail but her faith opened her more and more to God’s loving Self-Gift. And that meeting of love and faith gave birth to the almost miraculous peace and joy she found here and that we found in her presence with us.”

Journeying On Ruth Johnson, SCN, 89, died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on Dec. 26, 2006. A native of Bardstown, Ky., she had
been a member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth for 57 years. Sister Ruth served in healthcare at St. Joseph Infirmary, Louisville. While a resident at Nazareth Home she worked part-time in Community Service. Survivors include two sisters, Rosalie J. Cummins of Louisville and Mary Ruth Head of Rantoul, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
Written by the late Marilyn Spink, SCN, the reflections for Sister Ruth’s funeral service read in part: “Ruth chose the story of Ruth and Naomi for her funeral service. She loved the story of Ruth’s fidelity to her mother-in-law and her God ‘Wherever you go, I will go. Your God will be my God, too.’ Sister Ruth’s devotion and fidelity to her friends, family, and her God are similar to her namesake of the Old Testament.”
Rita Ann Willett, SCN, 91, died at Nazareth Home, Louisville, Ky., on Dec. 27, 2006. A native of Fancy Farm, Ky., she had been a Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 71 years. Sister Rita Ann was a teacher and principal in schools in Kentucky, Ohio and Louisiana. She served as Assistant Coordinator of Maria Hall and in Community Service at Nazareth Home/Maria Hall. Survivors include several nieces and nephews and many cousins. Ann Kernan, SCN, remembers Sister Rita Ann’s ability to find joy in the face of adversity, “Sister Rita Ann was the glue that kept our community in Columbus, Ohio, together during some very trying times. The excitement and happiness she found in the simplest things was contagious.” The Journey is produced quarterly by the Office of Congregational Advancement. Contributors for this issue include Diane Curtis, Raluca Barzu, Carolyn Willett, Patsy O’Toole, Dianne Smith, Janice White; SCNs Regina Atkins, Frances Krumpelman, Nancy Gerth, Jane Elizabeth O’Connell, Brenda Gonzales, Kitty Wilson and Rachel Willett. SCN ANNUAL REPORT
In Botswana, Ann Muthukattil, SCN, supervises children who now have a new place to gather – a playground at St. Mary’s preschool in Lobatse.
SCNs in Nazareth, Ky., planted a peace pole on their campus, similar to more than 200,000 others planted around the world to symbolize committment to non-violence.
In India, this mother and child live in the village of Sokho. The woman participates in a cooperative program that helps her support her family by selling plates made from leaves.
Leslie Wilson, director of development, greets a Belizean child during her trip with the group Treasured Women. The group, composed of seven women, met monthly to bring spiritual and financial values into alignment using Rosemary Williams’ book, A Woman’s Book of Money and Spiritual Vision. The women traveled to Belize in 2006 for a tranformational experience.
Social Outreach: Belize
A village of fl wers E
arlier this year, SCNs Rosemarie Kirwan, Paschal Maria Fernicola and SCN Novice Carlette Gentle began a new ministry in Las Flores, Belize. Their presence in the village is making a difference. The Sisters provide education and support to the residents of Las Flores. They wrote about their first endeavors: Las Flores is well-named. In Spanish, it means “The Flowers Village,” and the people are just as wonderful. When we arrived in late August amid heavy rains, the young people were the first to help us move in. Then came the adults to welcome us with gifts of food, flowers, fruits, vegetables and promises of help whenever we needed it. Our first request was to teach the people English, since, as refugees from El Salvador
during the war years of the 80s, Spanish is their first language.
Paschal Maria Fernicola, SCN, left, shares a smile with a Belizean woman.
After school, the children come to our small house and veranda for help with their homework. Their Spanish background makes it very difficult for some of them to understand and to learn in the English medium school. Judging from their enthusiasm, the children’s favorite time is the Saturday afternoon art class held on our tiny veranda. One very rainy Saturday, 32 of them came like little ducks, doffing their wet sandals on the veranda. That day, the class had to be held inside, with hardly room to turn around! But what fun! The women look forward to the weekly cooking class

around our stove. Some of their favorites so far have been chocolate cake, cinnamon buns, pizza and meat pies. Sewing, crocheting, and other needlework classes are also in demand.
“Carlette, teach us how to make pizza”, they asked, and so pizza happened! These women of Las Flores Village in Belize are learning new skills and sharing their wisdom with SCN Novice Carlette Gentle (center).
There are also requests for medical assistance and for basic foods. One mother, financially unable to keep a doctor’s appointment for her child who suffers from leukemia, finally came and asked for help when she feared for the life of her daughter. What relief and gratitude she radiated as she gave us big hugs! Best of all, are the visits to the homes. So much is shared there of joys and pains, of hopes and fears,
Sisters of Charity of Nazareth
of their stories of El Salvador and of the hardships of settling in Belize-now their peaceful haven. They speak of their gratitude to the Belizean government for taking them in and giving them a place of safety to start life over again. They have made great strides in becoming integrated into Belizean society, but they have a long way yet to go.

Pastoral Care: Botswana
Choose life!
Botswana ministry encourages hope in a country plagued by death from AIDS She’s attended hundreds of funerals in the six years she has lived in Botswana; most of the deceased have died from AIDS. “It is a terrible death,” says Pat Huitt. “Those with AIDS just diminish; they die so slowly, until they are just skeletons.” Sister Pat was one of the five SCN pioneers who went to Botswana in 2000 to minister to persons caught up in the HIV/AIDS pandemic. After the Congregation made the decision to go to Botswana, Sister Pat says each member of the Congregation was called into the process of discernment over the question -- who would go to Botswana? “A voice inside me kept saying ‘tell them you’re going to Botswana,’” recalled Sister Pat. “I started praying…it was very difficult to leave Sacred Heart Southern Mission. I was very happy… but I could not silence the voice inside me.” It is that “certainty” that Sister Pat exudes as she carries out her work from her home in Kanye. Working closely with both her parish and diocese, she reaches out through pastoral ministry to the sick and elderly. She gives training workshops for Communion givers, for funeral leaders, for catechists; and helps stem the spread of AIDS through educational programs.

Sisters of Charity of Nazareth
Deeply concerned about the continuing AIDS epidemic in Botswana, Sister Pat says so many people who are surrounded by death, especially the young, need to be convinced to “choose life.” She says “choosing life” involves changing one’s behavior. “You can give them all of these data about how people are dying from AIDS, how Botswana per population has the greatest number of deaths from AIDS… they can even see members of their families dying but it has not changed their behavior.” She says the program to “choose life” involves helping others develop values out of which they can live their lives. The youth are encouraged not to give themselves over to just anybody sexually, saying, “No, I want to abstain. I want to choose the way I want to live my life. I choose not to risk my life by having premarital sex.” Another message Sister Pat is trying to spread -- those diagnosed with AIDS can lead happy, productive lives. She hopes this message will stop the increase in suicides and the growing number of passion killings. The passion killings, Sister Pat feels, happen when people lose hope so they kill their partners and then themselves. Annual Report 2006

Healthcare: India ON THE COVER -- A young girl in Rajgir, who suffers from polio, is a resident of the hostel there. She is receiving a well-rounded education to prepare her for a successful life.
Unique Medicine
Outreach to polio victims in India gains worldwide attention Only able to move around if they use both their hands and feet, the children of Rajgir, India, are at first a startling sight to see. These children, most of whom have polio, come to Rajgir to receive medical treatment and an education. But once you talk with the children and Dr. Rose Plathottathil, SCN, you no longer see their disabilities, you

fall in love with their laughter, confidence and sense of mischief. “They are like any other child,” says Sister Rose, “except society abandons them because they are disabled. Mentally they are normal and they have all the needs as we all have.” The pioneer behind the program in Rajgir, Sister Rose, a homeopathic physician, is being recognized for strides she has made in health and human rights in the lives of children with polio. The founder of the Asha Kiran Rehabilitation Center was recently nominated for The Jonathan Mann Award for
rooms. Sister Rose lives with the children at the hostel. She sleeps in a large box used by day as a storage bin and table. Sister Rose’s smile is infectious but it quickly fades as she talks about how girls are treated before they arrive at Rajgir. She describes how many of these children come from very poor villages. The houses are simple mud huts lacking indoor plumbing. There is hardly any food to eat. The children are often ostracized and sometimes even abandoned. Their legs tiny and often malformed,
the children are only able to move around by using both their hands and feet. Some can’t even move and are carried by their mothers. By the time these young girls arrive at Rajgir, Sister Rose says many have been taught to believe that they can’t do anything. At Rajgir, the children receive nutritious meals, physical therapy, counseling, and when possible, surgery that allows them to stand upright and walk using crutches. They attend classes and help with cooking and cleaning. They play on swings, merry-go-rounds, and specially outfitted bicycles that allow them to pedal with their hands. When asked what these children’s lives would have been like had they not come to Rajgir, Sister Rose speaks quietly. “ These children sit around in the house…girls sit at home and cook. Some may get to marry late... only because older men want someone who can do the cooking and cleaning… these children have no one.” Sister Rose says the children have a bright future once they arrive at Rajgir. “Their minds are not paralyzed…they are able to study…they can (one day) earn their livelihood.
Some are taught skills like tailoring or candle making, others will become teachers, or perhaps even doctors.” Sister Rose is an advocate for the children of Rajgir. She says she is committed to making a difference in the lives of the children and families of Rajgir. “You know if they are in the village, the only one who is disabled, others look at them and make fun of them. What happens is that they always think they can’t do anything… here they are all disabled so nobody is making fun of them. They feel really free. They help each other, everybody does what they can…they realize they can do something.”
Rose Plathottathil, SCN, left, stands in the midst of her patients and students in Rajgir, India. Sister Rose was recently nominated for the Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights.

Education: United States
Teaching from the heart In August 2006, Connie Tarallo, SCN, began her 35th year teaching first graders at St. Ann School in Bartlett, Tenn., and she is now beginning to see some familiar faces in her classroom--the children and grandchildren of former students. For Sister Connie, educating children is more than a job – it is a calling. “I am teaching the future leaders of our community, our church and our country,” she explains. “I know by the grace of God that I am touching lives that, in turn, will reach out and touch others. What an awesome calling and responsibility is mine.” A true educator at heart, Sister Connie describes her ministry at St. Ann Parish as her undoubted passion since 1965, five years after the school was opened by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Besides teaching, she also serves as lector and minister of the Eucharist in St. Ann Church. She has been a member of the Parish Council, worked with the youth group and served as a member of the Parish School Board. “My favorite thing about the work that I do is working with young children,” Sister Connie said. “Letting them know that they are truly loved and special. Watching them gain confidence in themselves and seeing the light go on in their eyes when they succeed because as we know ‘nothing succeeds like success.’” Former students return as fellow teachers at St. Ann. Sister Connie says this gives her much hope because she can see the fruits of more than 40 years in the classroom. “As a teacher, I have the gift and ability to help build a strong moral foundation in the lives of those I teach, impacting and shaping those I come in contact with, and influencing their lives.” The guiding quote she uses to describe her passion and ministry in education comes from the SCN Constitutions: “Because we value the uniqueness of each person there is always among us a spirit of reverence and hospitality.” Sister Connie plans to remain at St. Ann and continue to enrich young lives. For her commitment and dedication, the parish awarded her this year with the Ann and Joachim Award. “I am truly blessed and grateful,” Sister Connie said. “My life could have been different, but it Constance Tarallo, SCN, is pictured teaching her first graders at St. Ann School, Bartlett, Tenn. couldn’t have been better.” Sister Connie, a lifetime educator, now teaches the children and grandchildren of former students.

We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
