From Caterpillar to Butterfly
“Making this commitment means that I promise to give it my all.”
At the age of 9, Carlette Gentle, a young Belizean girl, told her mother she wanted to become a Sister. The youngest of five children, Carlette didn’t quite know how this wish would play out 17 years later in her life and neither did her mother, who thought this was just a childhood phase. As time passed, Carlette felt her desire for religious life was more than child’s play. Through high school years, while she continued on her path like any teenager, dating and preparing for college, Carlette was open about her call. “The strongest part of my desire (to become a Sister) came when I was in high school,” Carlette explained. “I told everyone I was not ashamed to say it.”
Carlette Gentle, SCN
The truthfulness earned her a famous nickname. Since her father was commonly referred to as Fresh, his girl was bound to be a little Miss Fresh. However, confessing to her interest in becoming a Sister made Carlette into “Sista Fresh,” a pseudonym she proudly took on through her discernment process. At 26, Carlette became a Sister of Charity of Nazareth during a ceremony Aug. 2, 2007, in Belize. The theme of her vow mass was a butterfly, symbol of her growth through years of discernment and serious soul-searching. “From a caterpillar to a butterfly I grew in awareness of myself, the community and those around me,” Carlette says. “I had grown both inside and out.” So how did Sista Fresh, a vivacious young woman from Belize, become SCN Carlette? As she explains, her first encounter with the SCN Community happened through her “love of cooking.” Brenda Gonzales, SCN, who now serves as the Western vice provincial, used to coordinate immersion trips to Belize. One year she needed help providing food to volunteers in her group. That’s when Carlette came into the picture. “My

godmother is an SCNA and she knew Sister Brenda and volunteered me. I took up the job. I was surely glad I did because I really enjoyed my time there.” While cooking up her favorite dishes, Carlette observed the SCNs in the area. And the more she observed, the clearer it became that there was a strong connection with their charism. “I felt at home and I could be myself,” Carlette says. “They laughed and ran jokes and I admired them so much. They were also hospitable to me and treated me like they knew me for years. That is where the relationship first started to bloom.” It didn’t take long for Carlette to begin exploring possibilities. Religious life was something that had always been on her mind, but it was now taking a tangible shape. Despite this felt clarity, the years leading up to her vow mass were full of questions and doubts as well as revelations of her faith. “To me discernment was a deeper look into myself first of all to see if I really wanted to pursue religious life and a deeper look at the community to see if I can live the life they are asking and feel comfortable shining my own light within the community,” Carlette said. Her desire to have children also came into play, but she realized by pursuing a ministry of reaching out to the young ones, she’ll have even more children she can care for. She has now returned to Belize, where she runs a small preschool for children in Las Flores, teaches art classes on Saturdays, mentors a youth group and has taken up cooking classes for the women in the village.

RIGHT -- Sister Carlette shares her joy of cooking with women of Las Flores village, Belize.
When asked to reflect on what her commitment means to her, Carlette writes: “Religious life for me is first of all community. The bond and care our sisters have for each other is priceless. Religious life also means reaching out to my neighbor, not just the person who lives next to me but my homeless neighbor, my abused neighbor, my neighbor who needs justice, and the earth as part of my family. Making this commitment means that I promise to give it my all. To dream dreams and work toward letting them become a reality. To work toward justice for the poor, oppressed, and those who don’t have a voice. This commitment means to me that I am part of a bigger community and it feels like I belong. It means that I am part of a group that I am proud to say I belong.” So is it clear to see that, from caterpillar to butterfly, from Sista Fresh to Sister Carlette, this SCN has found a place where her dreams will transform the world around her as well.
Isamary Garcia professed her first vows at St. Vincent Church, Nazareth, Ky., on Feb. 2. Isa is a native of Mexico and joined the SCNs as a candidate in 1999. We will tell her vocation story in an upcoming issue of The Journey.

DoYouRemember? Montessori alumni share memories as part of 35th anniversary
Do you remember a favorite memory from your time studying at Nazareth Montessori? Maybe it was a best friend, a teacher, an experience that stuck with you throughout your life. Whatever it may be, Montessori wants you to share your memories and help celebrate the school’s 35th year and beyond.
THEN - Inside one of Nazareth Montessori’s first classes.
The school, founded in 1972 by Pat Hill, SCN, marked 35 years in December 2007, as dozens of well-wishers gathered for a celebration at Nazareth. Sister Pat, who is still making a difference in the lives of children through her teaching and guidance, shared her experiences over the years during the program. The celebration also included a performance by current Montessori students, and a sharing of favorite memories by alumni present. Jeni Schmitt, Montessori administrator, says, “We want to celebrate the lives of all of the children who attended our school. We are inviting former students and their families to celebrate with us. We believe that educating preschoolers involves a partnership between the families and the school. It is truly remarkable to see how much progress a child makes when the family and the school staff work together to celebrate the child’s uniqueness.”
NOW - From right, Alex Clark, 5, and Cameron Thiesing, 3, current Montessori students.
Jeni expressed pride in the impact the Nazareth Montessori Children’s Center has had on the Bardstown community. More than 2,000 children have graduated from the school since its inception. “The Montessori method is a philosophy for educating the whole child,” the administrator explains. “The classroom provides an environment that allows the natural development of the child to emerge. The teachers within the school present lessons that promote learning through a multi-sensory approach. In a Montessori school, each child grows, develops and learns in the way that matches her/his learning style.”
Jeni also notes that one of the most unique things about the Bardstown-Nelson County community is how much they support their children. “Looking around at the community leaders in this area, it is amazing to see how many of them attended NMCC,” she says. “Children are the future of our society. Without a community who supports its children, what would our future hold?” For more on Montessori visit www.nazarethmontessori.com.
Volunteers revisit New Orleans Nineteen young adults, between the ages of 18 and 24, participated in a volunteer experience in which they reached out to those still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. SCNs Luke Boiarski and Nancy Gerth accompanied the group which traveled to New Orleans in August 2007. SCNs were part of the collaborative project involving The Charity Federation and Operation Helping Hands through Catholic Charities. For five days, volunteers helped to clean out damaged property and paint doors and windows on five floors of a senior citizen facility that was affected by Hurricane Katrina. A group of 20 young adults joined Sisters Luke and Nancy for a similar experience in January 2008. 3

SCN ministry marks 60 years Our Lady of Nazareth Academy (OLN) in Wakefield, Mass., is celebrating its 60th anniversary. More than 600 people marked the occasion by attending a liturgy celebrated by the Most Rev. Francis X. Irwin, auxiliary bishop of Boston, at the beginning of the school year in September 2007. A large number of alumnae returned to the school halls they once roamed to reminisce and mark this significant milestone in the school’s history. The leadership and presence of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth was visible with many of the Congregation members in attendance. After the liturgy, the Nazareth community gathered for a reception where the history and many memories of the school were shared. SCNs came to Wakefield at the invitation of the Most Rev. Richard J. Cushing, archbishop of Boston. Below is an excerpt of a letter from SCNs written to the archbishop on Nov. 22, 1946, following the Sisters’ decision to purchase the property known as the Winship Estate in Wakefield, where OLN is located today.

“In the beginning we propose to use the estate as a retreat house and summer school for our Sisters; later, we shall decide for what permanent use it is best suited. We shall appreciate any suggestions your Excellency may offer. The choice of name at present seems to be in favor of Our Lady of Nazareth. Would this name conflict with any project you have in mind?” Thus, Our Lady of Nazareth opened its doors Sept. 15, 1947. Over the last six decades, thousands of women have graduated from OLN. Alumnae include leaders in a variety of professional fields - SCNs, doctors, researchers, teachers and executives. The celebration continues with the 60th Anniversary Gala to be held on March 29, 2008. The Gala will showcase the mission and vision of the SCN community. The Gala theme will encompass diamonds symbolizing the sparkle that is within each OLN student and graduate. This has been described by a recent grad in her poem entitled, “The Jewel.” The emphasis on the wonderful “jewels” that emerge from a Nazareth Academy education will bring together the entire community in celebration of the many facets of the school.

The pioneer who lives to see the Jubilee Dec. 13, 2007, marked a milestone – the 60-year anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in India. In 1947, six SCNs left Nazareth, Ky., bound for Mokama, India, traveling in two groups. The six Sisters were Lawrencetta Veeneman, Crescentia Wise, Ann Cornelius Curran, Florence Joseph Sauer, Charles Miriam Holt, and Ann Roberta Powers. Sister Ann Roberta, the only one living today, is very matter of fact when telling the story of how as a young woman she was willing to leave family, friends, and Sisters behind, perhaps never to see them again, to go to a country thousands of miles away. Below are excerpts from her first-hand account of the journey to India. After the farewell, the first three Sisters, Lawrencetta, Crescentia and Ann Cornelius left for their ship. They sailed two weeks before we last three…We sailed on 28 October, 1947 and had wonderful experiences on board the ship. Enroute we visited Beirut, Damascus and Alexandria. We couldn’t visit some other places because of dock strikes or unrest at these
ports. In Bombay (India) we had to tie up many knots out in the Ocean and couldn’t expect to leave there until after Christmas. The Captain of the ship asked all passengers to leave the ship and proceed overland. Stranded in Bombay, the three Sisters had to figure out how to get to Calcutta, India, where the ship was supposed to have docked. After being helped by several people, they secured train tickets and boarded for an overnight journey. Awoken in the middle of the night by bed bugs, Sister Ann Roberta discovered robbers in her train compartment. She screamed, the robbers escaped and with them a handful of possessions, but everyone was safe. Luckily, another Sister was carrying all of the precious documents. When the three women arrived in Calcutta, they discovered that the first group of Sisters to have left the United States had not arrived yet.
In the days that followed after they (the first group) left the ship and before their cargo was claimed from the ship we related our stories to each other. They told about the places where they had stopped and their experiences there, their first rickshaw rides and elephants, etc. We also shared our stories with them especially how we had to leave the ship in Bombay and how God had provided for us. On Dec. 12, the reunited Sisters boarded a train for Mokama where they arrived the following morning. Over the coming weeks, the six SCNs settled into their new home, learned about Indian foods and customs, and started taking Hindi classes. They were mindful of all that needed to be done in Mokama. Work was begun to prepare for the opening of the hospital. We began the outpatient department right away and had a few patients each day even some coming in by elephants. Some came in on beds carried

as litters and so on…Daily preparations continued for the opening of the hospital. Mokama Hospital opened July 19, 1948 followed by a nursing school in 1949, and the school of pharmacy. In the fall of 1949, three additional Sisters arrived from the United States. The three, along with Sister Ann Roberta, began work on the second SCN mission in India, staffing a school in Gaya. Over the years, Sister Ann Roberta has helped establish several ministries in India and is often referred to as a pioneer. She has empowered the poor, educated countless students, and cared for those that others would not - patients with leprosy, cholera, and typhoid. Six decades after boarding the ship that brought her to India, Sister Ann Roberta remains among her eastern Sisters working in Gaya, a mission that she helped start.

other Sisters in 1952, as the third group of SCNs to go to the eastern country. The mission in Mokama had been established for five years and SCNs were now opening a school in Gaya, India. Sister Patricia was asked to teach English at Nazareth Academy. She went on to work in vocations for several years. Sister Patricia says she is grateful to God for all the blessings that have taken place in India, “We are celebrating 60 years of phenomenal growth… we started out with four or five Sisters each year and now we have over 200.” One of the many young Indian women Sister Patricia had an impact on was Margaret Rodericks, SCN. Instead, Sister Margaret found herself drawn to the SCNs. Especially fascinating to young Margaret was a photograph of Sister Ann Bernadette riding a bicycle, in full white habit and veil. “I had never seen a Sister ride a bicycle in my home city,” says Sister Margaret. “I thought, these Sisters go out to the people, they don’t wait for the people to come to them. That was the drawing card for me.” Sister Margaret wrote the SCNs about her interest and was invited to come to Mokama. But she put her wishes on hold in order to fulfill her father’s desire that she complete
Cover Story college. After earning her degree, Sister Margaret recalls the conversation she had with her father upon asking his permission to leave Bombay, a large developed city, to go to Mokama, a small village in northern India. Her dad asked, “Where is Mokama located?” The two looked at a map of India. They spread the map out on the dining room table and even got out a magnifying glass. Still they could not locate the city. Sister Margaret says her father put the magnifying glass down, looked at her, his only daughter of six children, and said, “My girl where are you going? Mokama is not even on the map!” Despite her father’s concern that she might be treated differently because she was an Indian woman joining Sisters from an American Congregation, Sister Margaret was determined to become an SCN. And what she found was a refreshing approach to welcoming new members to the Congregation and embracing of the Indian culture. “We do it as we do it in India…the menu is Indian, our Sisters offer prayer

Sister Margaret says SCNs from India have spread out across the globe, working in Nepal, Belize, Botswana, and the United States. “I am so proud of our Community…and not just that, but how leadership has been developed among the Indian Sisters which is so unique.” This is a sentiment echoed by Sister Patricia who says from the very beginning young Indian women who joined the SCNs were encouraged to become leaders. Now there are SCNs in a number of roles across India, shares Sister Margaret, “Indian Sisters today are totally in all leadership positions and not just Congregational but also in ministry. They are the administrators of hospitals, principals of our schools, the directors of clinics, provincials, council members and board members…” Sisters Margaret and Patricia both marvel at all that SCNs have accomplished since 1947. “We (SCNs) had no plans for the future, we just hoped our schools would increase and our hospitals would multiply…it has just far exceeded anyone’s expectations,” says Sister Patricia. The two women, Sister Margaret and Patricia count themselves as so very blessed to be part of a global Congregation that has expanded beyond Nazareth, Ky., to missions in five countries.
They say that anywhere SCNs are in mission, a familiar charism can be felt, the charism of their foundress Mother Catherine Spalding – the spirit of simplicity, humility, charity, and hospitality.

Cover Story SCN President Shalini D’Souza opens India celebration Hundreds gathered in the church at Mokama, India on Dec. 26-27, 2007, to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of SCNs in India. Among the speakers was Shalini D’Souza, SCN. Sister Shalini, a native of Bombay, India, is the first Indian Sister to serve as President of the Congregation. The following are excerpts from her celebratory remarks: In September 1931 Father Charles Cloud, SJ, visited Nazareth to request the General Council to consider Sisters for mission in India. Mother Mary Catherine Malone promised to “think about it” and to keep the project in her prayers. In May 1946 Mother Ann Shalini D’Souza, SCN Sebastian Sullivan answered that prayer!
SCNs at the Nazareth Motherhouse created dozens of angels for the Eastern Province’s Jubilee. .
In a letter to the Congregation, Mother Ann Sebastian wrote: “…We are entering the foreign missions… Do your best praying that God will support every step of our way in these new foundations. Our confidence must not fail Him.” In April 1947 Mother Ann Sebastian wrote again: “Six is the number chosen…but that does not bar the rest of us from sharing the same apostolate.” An impressive and touching departure ceremony was held at Nazareth; the six Sisters traveled in two groups, and at 4:05 a.m. on Dec. 13, 1947, all arrived in Mokameh where a warm and enthusiastic delegation waited to welcome them. A new era in the life of the SCN Congregation had begun; Catherine Spalding’s charism was being planted in India!
Slowly the mission developed and life began to form itself into patterns. Sister Lawrencetta wrote: “The year has passed quickly; in some ways it doesn’t seem that long and then in others it seems we have been here for many years…” Mothers Bertrand and Ann Sebastian, after their first visitation to India, wrote a letter signed: “The Two Mothers.” They said: “If there is one link which has bound us more firmly as a community and which has given us deeper appreciation of God’s Providence, it is our Mission to India. The Community has sacrificed to meet this obligation, the Community is sacrificing to support it, and the Community will continue to expand our labors here, if God so ordains. The mission has been blessed in exceptional ways and the sacrifices which the Sisters are making will bring untold graces to all of us and those under our care.” The mission continued to be blessed and the 50s were years of great progress in the hospital. Its development was rapid and solid and many accomplishments - including the permission for the Sisters to ride bicycles - marked this decade. The arrival of Sister Mary Martha, SCN whose brief but staggering achievements as chief surgeon at Nazareth Hospital, were historic. Sister Crescentia fired with initiative and enthusiasm opened the leper clinic. This decade saw the beginnings of educational endeavors at Nazareth Academy, in Gaya and also in nonformal centers. In addition the Sisters engaged in social and pastoral apostolate. With the expansion of mission, the Congregation also began to grow. India saw the entrance and profession of the first Indian Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Reflecting on the ministries of SCNs in India, decade by decade, we become aware of progress, cohesiveness, continuity, God’s providential care, and faithfulness. Sister Lawrencetta’s oft repeated words: “If Mother Catherine were here she would go…” have sent many an SCN from this Province along paths unknown and un-traveled all the way to Nepal and even to Africa!
Sangeeta Ayithamattam, SCN Eastern provincial, cuts the ribbon officially opening a Festival of Ministries that took place during the India Jubilee Celebrations in Mokama.
Sister Sangeeta places a garland of flowers, as a sign of gratitude on Ann Roberta Powers, SCN, the only living India pioneer.
The past 60 years speak of successes, failures, joys and tragedies and all the vicissitudes that make up the history of any institution! How many times have we looked back and laughed at seeming impossibilities? But we did it!!! The 60th Anniversary included a Festival of Ministries, Eucharistic celebrations, times of bonding between the attendees and honoring the SCN Family members that have joined the mission over the years. 9

SCNs begin Associate program in Botswana The SCN Family is growing in Botswana, Africa. Moved by the work of the SCN community in that country, several women are exploring the possibility of becoming Associates.
A young man prays in an outdoor chapel in Botswana.
In January 2007, SCN Central Leadership asked Marilyn Shea, SCN, to consider a three-month stay in Botswana to help plan the initial stages of SCN Associate formation. Sister Marilyn describes what followed as “a surprise, a challenge, and ultimately, a gracefilled experience.” Below, she shares her experience during her sojourn in Botswana:
After much prayer and discernment, the five SCNs and one SCN Associate in Botswana had invited seven women to consider becoming Associates and they accepted the invitation. When asked why, the women cited example after example of the ways that the SCN community had helped them, the sacrifices the SCN community had made to come to Botswana, and most importantly, the great love with which they carried out their ministries. It was evident that the women desired to share in the SCN charism and mission. On June 2, the seven met with the SCN community in Kanye for the first formation event. They entered wholeheartedly into the day-long learning process. On that day, I saw women eager to learn and hungry for a deeper spirituality. During the next two months, I worked with the SCN community in planning a two-year formation process which includes eight formation days, monthly meetings for prayer and reflection, as well as honest dialogue and consistent evaluation of the formation process. The seven gifted candidates will be an invaluable help in shaping the SCN Associate relationship in a way that is culturally sensitive and relevant to Botswana. While in Botswana, Sister Marilyn experienced a number of unforgettable encounters.
Thecountryof Botswana Botswana is a semi-arid, landlocked country with a population of approximately 1.6 million people. Since achieving independence in 1966, Botswana has been blessed with a stable government, excellent roads, the economic benefits of being the third largest exporter of diamonds, and a large exporter of beef in addition to a growing level of tourism. Like other African countries, however, Botswana suffers from the insidious spread of the AIDS virus. Officially, it is estimated that 37% of the population is HIV positive and the number of orphans due to HIV-positive deaths continues to increase. The SCN community began its ministry in Botswana in September 2000. In 2006, the small community of five SCNs and one SCN Associate chose to include in its long-range plans the development of the SCN Associate relationship.
Marilyn Shea, SCN, second from right, stands with some of the attendants of the fist SCN Associate formation event in Botswana, Africa.
It was also in Lobatse where I witnessed the loving welcome into the Catholic Church of a beautiful young woman in very frail health, hardly able to stand, due to the AIDS virus. That evening the powerful light of faith illumined the crowded “chapel” of her mother’s kitchen where only candles and a kerosene lamp burned dimly… This indeed was a holy night. What did I “see” in Botswana? Surely, I saw the glory of Christ revealed in the lives of his servants. I saw the “reign of God” made visible in their witness of faith, generosity, and compassion. I saw the difference their love made in the lives of so many struggling women, men, and children. I saw the depth of prayer and spirituality that is the foundation of their missionary zeal. I experienced the joy of celebrating the sacred liturgy with the Botswana Catholics whose deep, rich, harmonious voices make the angels glad to take their sung prayer to the throne of God. I saw the SCN charism vibrant, effective, and contagious enough to inspire talented, faith-filled women to become SCN Associates. Sisters of Charity of Nazareth

Together on the Journey
Discovering Oneness SCN Associates make commitments, join SCN Family during annual retreat
Four women made initial commitments as SCN Associates in September 2007 during the annual retreat and commitment weekend on the Nazareth Campus, Nazareth, Ky. In addition to the four people making initial commitments, 28 SCNAs renewed their commitments and two Associates made a life-time commitment during an evening prayer service. Associates enter into relationship with the Congregation citing a number of reasons including the desire to deepen one’s spirituality, to build community with other SCN Associates and SCNs, and to reach out in service to others in the tradition of Vincent de Paul, Louise de Marillac and Catherine Spalding. Cathy Lavender, SCN Associate, who made her first commitment, explains, “I have been friends with SCNs for many years. From left, Miriam Piconni, Wanda Russell, Cathy Lavender and Eileen Meyer made their first committment as SCN Associates. I wanted a more committed relationship with the Congregation. Once I participated in the Associate weekends I knew this was for me. Every single weekend that I attended was life-giving.” The faith sharing and camaraderie experienced during the Associate weekends and ongoing gatherings strengthens participants in their individual faith journeys. “My relationship to the Congregation brings a sense of community into my life. To walk as a child of God is an awesome (in the original sense of the word) task. Belonging to such a dynamic community in our Church today gives me the strength to continue putting one foot forward,” Cathy explains. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have always reached out to include others in their Mission, just as Vincent de Paul did in his days. Reflecting on her commitment, Eileen Mitchell, SCN Associate, comments, “We come from different places both spiritually and physically but there is a oneness in our journey.” Sharon Browning, a Vincentian spiritual director and an attorney from Philadelphia, Penn., was the key presenter during the weekend.
During the Associate weekend, many shared reflections at their tables. Pictured, Joetta Davis, right, and Rosanne Dillon.

Her Spirit Lives
New book on SCN foundress takes a deeper look at Mother Catherine Capture the spirit of Catherine Spalding. Put it in words. This was the mission asked of Margaret Maria Coon, SCN. Sister Margaret Maria embraced this task she was charged with and authored the recently released book, “Her Spirit Lives.” The author has received much praise for her book. The creation of this publication was first assigned to Sister Margaret Maria and her sister, SCN Anna Catharine Coon in 1998. Maria Vincent Brocato, SCN, then president of the Congregation, asked the Sisters to write a monograph that would illustrate Catherine’s spirit. The project was temporarily abandoned in 2000 but after reading the first chapter, the SCN Publications Committee asked Sister Margaret Maria to complete it. The committee felt this book was important because prior publications relate to the history of the SCN Congregation and Mother Catherine’s life as it relates to that history. “This book is different from other publications because it deals with the intangible – the spirit of Mother Catherine – a quality which is ‘caught’ by her daughters and cannot be ‘taught’,” said Margaret Rodericks, SCN, a member of the Publications Committee. The committee realized there was a need for a book which would help Mother Catherine’s spirit materialize in a tangible way. They knew Sister Margaret Maria could make this happen. Sister is known in the community as a scholar, an excellent writer and one who knows the history of the SCNs. She also has a love for the Congregation and for Mother Catherine. In addition, Sister Margaret Maria had already produced many writings that range from poetry to prayer to historical sketches and short histories.
“Her Spirit Lives,” a new book on Mother Catherine Spalding, SCN foundress, can be purchased by calling (502) 348-1555.
Sister Margaret Maria Coon, left, holds her new book on Mother Catherine Spalding. She is accompanied by Kathy Bolger, the designer of the book’s cover.
The book, which is less than 70 pages, can be used as an introduction into the life of Mother Catherine and the Congregation. Deceptively simple, it is a powerful account of Catherine Spalding’s character. “Her Spirit Lives” is quite readerfriendly and that quality has made it a popular read. Sister Margaret Maria has received many comments from people about the book and she believes it is serving its purpose of getting to Catherine’s spirit. Sister Margaret Maria said she was surprised that so many people had not read about Catherine’s life before. Recently she has heard from members of different local parishes who have found the book a great resource. As Sister Margaret Maria says about the book, “In order to get to her spirit, and tell who she was, you have to tell what she did.” Sisters of Charity of Nazareth

Sister Judy was nominated for the award in May, while she was still employed by Memorial Health Care in Chattanooga as senior vice president of mission. The nomination touched on Sister Judy’s guidance of Memorial through transitions, creating a healthier community, planning and conducting special blessing ceremonies, enhancing a healing environment, and her commitment to the poor, the uninsured, the homeless and hungry in the community. She was also commended for leading the ethics committee which she created as a resource for physicians, family and patients with ethical concerns.

SCNs retire from Camp Maria ministry Imagine the thrill of seeing a sunset for the first time. Or as a young person from the tough life of the inner city, feeling that certain peace only felt when one’s safety is ensured. Imagine the freedom of moving your normally wheelchair-bound body through the water.
Carol McKean, SCN
These are just a few of the examples of wonder experienced by campers at the SCN-run ministry, Camp Maria, located on Breton Bay in Leonardtown, Md. These are also a part of the fond memories Administrator Carol McKean, SCN, and Assistant Administrator Michaella Cronin, SCN, take with them as they resign from their positions with Camp Maria. Sister Carol has served for 10 years as administrator and Michaella Cronin, SCN Sister Michaella has been connected with Camp Maria for 41 years, beginning as a college counselor and is now in her 10th year as the associate director. It is an emotional time for them both. The Sisters say they will remember the happy faces of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) campers at the camp they hosted annually. They will remember working with the youth of many nationalities and seeing them enjoy the beauty of nature and working to find God in their lives. They enjoyed seeing young and old come together and find pleasure in the simple things in life, such as land sports, picnics, praying together, and seeing God in their midst.
Pictures, from top: • A stunning view from Camp Maria at sunset. • Muscular Dystrophy Association members and their families have enjoyed the grounds at Camp Maria for 34 years. • From left, SCNs Carol McKean, Maria Vincent Brocato as Mother Catherine Spalding and Michaella Cronin, stand in front of one of the cottages on camp grounds.
Running the camp and retreat center was not without its challenges. “Our constant challenge was hiring and training enough seasonal employees to assist with the work required for serving about 3,000 people a year.”
For more information on Camp Maria visit www.campmaria.org.
Sisters Michaella and Carol were able to accomplish much during their 10-plus years. They were able to renovate and do necessary repairs to all the buildings on the grounds, which enabled retreatants to continue to enjoy the simplicity of the center. They also boosted the staff by hiring highly qualified employees dedicated to the mission of the SCNs.
The Sisters are particularly proud of the annual yard sale which enabled the involvement of the local community of Leonardtown in the ongoing mission. The yard sale not only provided money for the Camp Maria Retreat Center, it also enabled the center to help the poor in the county by supplying them with needed articles before the yard sale. It was a gathering place for many in the county to come and meet old friends and a simple event which enriched the lives of many people. The search for a new director to lead this retreat oasis was recently completed. Kitty Wilson, SCN, was appointed to “continue to offer the services of a retreat center and move it forward while embracing the mission of Camp Maria and the SCNs.” She assumes the position March 1, 2008. Read more about Sister Kitty in the next issue of The Journey.

riving down the main avenue through Nazareth Campus, you may see Francis Dixon walking along the road or down the paved path. Francis, a Village II resident, walks the grounds as often as he can. Even in the rain. “Rain is a great sign of life from God,” he says. You may even notice him veer off the path into the woods where he sometimes goes to climb a tree. “It’s a little bit risky but very meditative,” says Francis. He spent most of his adult life as an attorney in civil law and practiced law for over 40 years in New York City. After retiring, Francis moved to El Paso, Texas, where he worked with illegal immigrants. His volunteer efforts then led him to Colorado where he worked in family law, offering legal assistance for battered women Francis Dixon attends a prayer vigil at Nazareth. and abused children. “S
he is so gifted with children…and has the patience of Job,” Angela Hicks, SCN, talks about Prisca Bilung, SCN, and the tremendous impact she has had at a preschool in the village of Lobatse in Botswana, Africa. Almost all of the children at the school are affected by or infected with the HIV/AIDS virus.
They have lost parents and siblings to the disease or are battling the infection themselves. Sister Prisca Bilung, SCN, prays with her class in the village of Angela recalls the first day SCNs arrived at the Lobatse, Botswana. school. To say the children were not exactly on their best behavior is putting it mildly, says Sister Angela, but within three days, Sister Prisca, who has a way with children, managed to bring calm to the classroom. And, says Sister Angela, what is even more amazing is Sister Prisca accomplished this even though at the time she did not speak the same language as the children, Setswana.
love
There was one boy in particular, a child who never spoke, that caught the attention of Sister Prisca. She had the child’s hearing tested, discovering he was impaired, and worked tirelessly with him. Sister Angela says “this gifted teacher” connected with the boy and eventually he was able to do everything the other children were doing.
Hopeful that she is always able to work with children because it comes so naturally, Sister Angela says Sister Prisca simply “has a gentle way about her.”
Sister Prisca helps with a mural on the wall of the preschool in Lobatse.

“T
hey are just a super family,” says Peggy Masterson, director of the SCN Associate Program, when talking about the Garza family - Felix, Elizabeth, Tomas and Annalisa. Often seen with arms around each other at demonstrations, SCN Associate retreats, and candlelight vigils, the Garzas are described by many as a wonderful example of what it means to be an SCN Family member. “They really embrace the SCN charism,” says Peggy.
SCN Family members attend the annual SOA demonstration, at Fort Benning, Ga. Pictured, from left, front, Tomas and Annalisa Garza, back, Felix Garza, Joetta Venneman, PBVM, and Elizabeth Garza.
Felix talks with great joy about the decades-long connection he and his family have had with SCNs. In 1982, Felix met Brenda Gonzales, SCN, at the University of Texas. She was the Campus Minister. Sister Brenda says she watched Felix, an amazing student, become further socially aware of his voice to make a difference. “We connected a lot on issues of social justice,” says Felix of the SCNs. “We saw the church’s role in responding to the needs of the poor…there was a clear connection.”

Felix and Elizabeth also feel very connected to the Nazareth campus in Nazareth, Ky., where they stayed for six weeks in 1987 following intensive work in South Texas with people fleeing El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. “It was an amazing time to relax, rest and just reflect and think on the direction we were going,” says Felix. In the early 90s, the Garza family and SCNs Kathleen Hall and Julie Driscoll shared a house. “I learned from them the complete openness that their Mexican-American hospitality offers to anyone who comes to visit at any time,” says Sister Julie. Felix has had many opportunities to serve his migrant and MexicanAmerican and the wider Hispanic communities over the years. So, too, has Elizabeth who works with both Casa Latina and La Casita – outreach programs for Hispanic families in Louisville. But for both Felix and Elizabeth, “the first priority is family,” emphasizes Sister Julie. Felix and Elizabeth have been SCN Associates for more than 21 years. Read more about the Garzas and their work on issues of immigration in the upcoming issue of The Journey.

aveen Kumar, a young man living in a village of Mokama, India, was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. It was expected that he might reply a doctor or an engineer, or some other profession. Instead he simply said, “A good man.” His story before meeting the SCNs is a tragic one. Naveen’s father would often beg to feed his family so the Sisters in Mokama would give him small jobs so he could earn an income with dignity and support his family. On his way to work one morning, he was struck and killed by a vehicle. Naveen stumbled upon this site as he was walking to school. His world was shattered, Mercy Thundathil, SCN, recalls.
Naveen Kumar poses next to Cassilda Castell, SCN, in Mokama.
After the burial of his father, no one was sure what would become of Naveen. His mother was ill and unable to take care of him. She eventually died, leaving Naveen with his sister who dealt with physical conditions such as malnutrition and TB. Naveen, for the second time in his young life, had to oversee the burial of a parent. The young boy often had no choice but to miss classes in the parish school. When he did attend, he earned good grades. Hoping to improve living conditions for Naveen, SCNs asked him if he would be willing to leave his village and go to Patna to live in a hostel and attend school. He gladly accepted.
mission
Over the years the Sisters have become Naveen’s family. Sister Mercy, his guardian, has made sure that Naveen always has food, shelter, and a place in the classroom. And almost everyday after school, one of the SCNs has tutored him in his studies. “I receive a lot of love and care from the Sisters here,” Naveen wrote from Patna two years ago.
Having passed 10th class, he has now moved back to his village and is continuing his studies. Not only did Naveen graduate from high school but he also finished second in his class. He calls Sister Mercy almost every day to give her all of his news. “Now he is hoping to do his graduation and teacher’s training,” writes Sister Mercy. “He likes to teach. He is hard working and has ambition…With our financial help, love and support he is coming up well.” Naveen has become a good man.

Isabelle Sadowski
K
itty Wilson, SCN, keeps a picture of two young sisters on her bulletin board and says a special prayer for them and their family. Isabelle Sadowski, 9, lost her baby sister, Olivia, who was 7 months old in 2004. To honor the life of her tiny sibling, Isabelle donated to the missions of the SCNs, asking that the money be used to “help girls in places where they’re not allowed to go to school and without clean water.”
generosity
As the SCN Family continues to grow in benefactors each day, Isabelle, one of its newest additions, wants her donation to be used wisely – her six dollars are to be split between India and Nepal, going to some of the most needy SCN missions. “I enjoy being a part of your mission work,” Isabelle scribbled at the bottom of her donation envelope. The young donor, who lives in Huntsville, Ala., promises a new gift to help special needs babies. Sister Kitty, who usually responds to SCN Family donors in writing, was especially touched by Isabelle’s story. The gift from the heart of a child is powerful, she says. “We call donations – gifts,” Sister Kitty wrote Isabelle, “because it is your gift to help another child have a better life.”

hat can a young boy of 10 living in the U.S. do for another child in an impoverished country? John Snider, from Fernley, Nev., proves even the smallest gift counts.
During a visit from Kitty Wilson, SCN, at his local church, John reached out and donated one of his most precious gifts – his favorite toy car.
genero
“He gave it to me to give to a poor child because he was touched by the story I told,” remembers Sister Kitty. The story was about a young boy about John’s age suffering from advanced TB and lying helpless in a train station in India. Joel Urumpil, SCN, took the boy in her rickshaw and held him in her arms. With his last bit of energy this little boy looked up at her and said, “You are God.” Sister Joel replied, “No, I am a nurse God is using to tell you God loves you.” The boy faintly added, “I cannot see God. I can see you. You are God to me.” And with these words he died. John was extremely impressed by the story, his mother, Emily said. “This story struck both of us and made us both want to cry.” He rushed out to find Sister Kitty and handed her the only possession in his pocket that day, his toy. John mentioned he just wants this car to get to some little boy who would enjoy it as much as he does. And Sister Kitty promised him just that. “John’s gift is truly a gift from the heart,” she said.

ou might have seen her smiling face at the annual Nazareth Picnic. Or met her while she was attending an Associate retreat.
Mary Catherine Hickman, SCN Associate and long time Nazareth employee, left, talks with another Associate, Nora Ballard, at the 2007 Nazareth Picnic.
SCN Associate Mary Catherine Hickman has been a part of the SCN Family for nearly forty years. She can’t say enough about what the Associate Program has meant to her. “It has brought me out of my shyness, helped me understand prayer more,” says Mary Catherine. And she has been able to form many friendships with others, especially women with whom she has been able to discuss the joys and sometimes troubles in life.
Mary Catherine is just one of dozens of SCN employees that are a part of the SCN Family. In fact three employees on the Nazareth campus have worked for SCNs for over 40 years. Mary Catherine recently retired after more than 39 and a half years on the job. She talks lovingly about being an SCN employee describing Nazareth as a “beautiful place to work.” Always on the go, Mary Catherine looks forward to spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren and traveling with her sisters. She is also going to volunteer to take the elderly or disabled to their doctor’s appointments. And yes, although the Nazareth Picnic is still months away, she is already making plans to work in a booth.

“G
ifted healer,” “astute, brilliant woman,” “woman of many talents and gifts,” these are phrases used by SCNs to describe Dr. Mary Wiss. A long-time friend and donor, Dr. Wiss is also a former member who practiced medicine at Nazareth Hospital in Mokama, India, for five years. The former Sister Mary Martha was a young Sister, says Patricia Kelley, SCN, when she was asked by leaders in the Congregation if she would consider going to Georgetown Medical School so that she could eventually work in India as a physician missionary. In those days, religious with medical degrees were not allowed to practice medicine in the United States. Sister Patricia says Dr. Wiss, the first SCN to study medicine, was a smashing success in India and changed the lives of many patients by restoring their ability to walk or use impaired limbs.
Mary Wiss, an SCN at the time, left, operates on a patient assisted by Bridget Kappalumakal, SCN, in Mokama.
Bridget Kappalumakal, SCN, was beginning her teaching career at the School of Nursing in Mokama when she became friends with Dr. Wiss. “She worked hard day and night to take care of the patients along with another doctor, Dr. D’Cruze, under the most unfavorable situations. Lack of proper facilities in the hospital, lack of equipment, lack of continuous electricity, utter poverty, etc., did not deter her from her selfless service of the sick,” recalls Sister Bridget. “Often she would operate upon the patients all through the night… There are so many patients in and around Mokama who are alive today because of the courage, risk taking and concern of Dr. Mary Wiss.”

risk-taking When Dr. Wiss returned to the United States her life took her into a different direction. Though she left the Congregation, she remained very much a part of the SCN family. Dr. Wiss moved to Appalachia and practiced medicine for more than 40 years before retiring.
“Dr. Mary Wiss is still remembered by many in and around Mokama,” says Sister Bridget. And she “still continues to support the India mission, which she loved so much.”

hey come together each week day at 1 p.m. to pray for members of the SCN Family. Twelve people from different walks of life - among the group, a former teacher, a young woman originally from Romania, four SCNs, a native of Bardstown, Ky., who loves to camp, and an avid golfer. Each member of this group has one thing in common, a passion for the SCN community that led them to begin working in the Office of Congregational Advancement. The twelve women are often touched by the prayer requests received by phone, mail or even through the SCN Web site. So if you are one of the thousands who request prayers or donate, know that this group of twelve is praying for you at about 1 p.m., almost every day.

Every day, there are also dozens of Sisters in the ministry of prayer. Pictured, the hands of John Ann Kulina, SCN, holding the Rosary during evening prayer at the SCN Motherhouse.

We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
