She is a powerhouse, an advocate, and a tireless educator. Lucy Freibert, SCN, is well known in Louisville, Ky., and beyond for the impact she has had on the lives of so many. Former students sing her praises and go out of their way to stay in touch and if one Googles Sister Lucy, there are many references to her on the Internet. Among the references, the Facebook profiles of those who note her as their hero. It is nearly impossible to do justice to all that Sister Lucy has accomplished. In SCN archives there are boxes of awards, writings, letters of thanks, and scrapbooks. She has even been honored with a painting that quite beautifully depicts her deep faith and thirst for knowledge. Sister Lucy has earned honors and awards too numerous to

list. Some of them include the University of Louisville’s Distinguished Teaching Award (1987), the Mary K. Bonsteel Tachua Gender Equity Award (2004), and the Trustees Award (2001) in recognition of her contributions to and impact on student life. The UofL Office of Community Engagement awarded Sister Lucy the Lifetime Community Service Award in recognition of her more than 50 years of community service and in 2010, she was inducted into the UofL College of Arts & Sciences Hall of Honors. Since 1947 when Sister Lucy began her career in education, she has taught thousands of students at all levels — elementary school, high school, college, and graduate school. praised for her energetic presence in the classroom, the way she empowers students to ask questions, and the authors and writings she has chosen to highlight, some long forgotten or neglected by history. Sister Lucy began teaching at UofL in 1971. As a professor of English, she was one of the founders of the Women’s Studies Program. She also taught one of the first African-American literature courses and was an advocate for racial equality throughout her career. Sister Lucy was instrumental in establishing the Women’s Center and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. In addition to receiving recognition for being a “steady and constant inspiration” in the classroom, Sister Lucy has also authored numerous writings including Hidden Hands: An Anthology of American Women Writers, 1790-1870. It was the first anthology devoted to American women writers of the period. When asked several years ago about her inspiration for writing the anthology by a budding journalist at the UofL student newspaper, Sister Lucy responded. “When I was in college, the only female we learned about extensively was Emily Dickinson. There were so many women who were not taught.” When Professor Freibert retired from UofL, Dr. Barbara A. Humble, Sister Lucy did not try to seek the limelight, but her zest for life often led reporters to approach her. She once told a student journalist, “I see myself as somebody who challenges students to learn as much as they can and to try to understand the culture in which they live. I try to teach them to examine that culture and examine their own thinking about it.” In another article, she remarked upon a guiding philosophy, “You take risks and live with the results.” And yet a third journalist, Courier Journal columnist Dianne Aprile wrote, “For me and for many of those who’ve known her over the years, Freibert has been a refreshing reminder that women can break the rules, live outside traditional roles, speak loud and clearly against the status quo, and not just survive … but thrive … and, in the process, nourish the dreams of others.” There is little doubt that Sister Lucy has “nourished the dreams of others,” in the classroom and beyond. She has been involved with various organizations and has often been a founding member of much needed entities like Pleades Theatre and Project Women, Inc. (now Family Scholar House). These not-for-profit agencies have grown and flourished. The Family Scholar House which recognizes the challenges that single-parent students face in trying to provide housing, childcare, and basic necessities for their children without adequate income or education, has helped hundreds of families in Louisville and Southern Indiana. Single parents have been able to fulfill their dreams of earning a degree and having a career thanks to assistance with housing, childcare support, and educational opportunities. continued on page 26

Words Speak Volumes in SCN Archives From a handwritten letter by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War on behalf of the Congregation, to a rare note by St. Vincent de Paul, to photos dating back to the 1800s, the SCN archives is a treasure trove. The archives hold a vast amount of historical data and unique collections, all of which date back to the beginnings of the Congregation nearly 200 years ago. Historians can peruse letters, photographs, and books, all pertaining to the Congregation and SCN ministries including schools, hospitals, and other groundbreaking programs. There are also permanent records for every Sister, publications, newspaper clippings, baptismal records, constitutions, and annals - a form of diary for the Sisters in each house and ministry. Bridgid Clifford, SCN, served as director of the SCN archival center for 11 years. She describes her time there as a new and challenging experience — rewarding in countless ways. Today the archival center is under the direction of Kathy HertelBaker. Prior to coming to Nazareth, Ky., Kathy worked as the director of library and archives at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, in Alaska. 3

Kathy has great admiration for the care that has been taken with the SCN collection. “I’ve rarely seen the kind of forward thinking the Sisters have had for their materials. They truly have cherished the historical value of their archives,” Kathy says. Just spending a day in archives, can transport one back in time, as you read through letters exchanged between Sisters actively ministering in different parts of the country and the world. The clippings from newspapers are also fascinating and date back to 1826. The archives department is located on the second floor of O’Connell Hall at Nazareth, with Heritage Hall, a museum, located directly below it on the first floor. It’s easy to spend a day or longer visiting both areas. “Papers, letters and documents are housed at the archives, historical objects are displayed in Heritage Hall,” says Kathy. Anna Powell also serves in the archive center as assistant archivist. Under the supervision of Kathy and Anna, the archives are undergoing some upgrades and reordering. “Things were in superb order to begin with,” says Kathy, “Now we have the luxury of doing things to make these items last another 200 years.” Plans are underway to bring many featured items of archives online. The staff is also currently engaged in reviewing the archives of the former Vincentian Sisters of Charity (now Sisters of Charity of Nazareth) that were once housed in Pittsburgh, Pa., but have recently been moved to Nazareth. There are congregational archives in India as well. www.scnfamily.org
The oldest item in the archives is an original book owned by Bishop David that dates back to 1615. Also held in the archives are the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth’s original constitutions hand-written by Bishop David. The SCNs hold one of only a few complete runs of the Official Catholic Directory dating back to its first publication in 1833, but Kathy’s personal favorite is Mother Catherine Spalding’s original handwritten letters dating back to the early years of the Congregation. Mother Catherine in NWHM
A short biography of Mother Catherine Spalding now appears on the National Women’s History Museum website. Below is an excerpt. In 1813, when no education for girls, no private health care, and no organized social services existed on the Kentucky frontier, Catherine Spalding, aged 19, was elected leader of six women forming a new religious community, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. On Jan. 6, 2003, the Louisville Courier-Journal named her the one woman among 16 “most influential people in Louisville/Jefferson County history.” … Her peers so respected her that Sister Catherine was consistently re-elected to six-year terms, despite giving Fr. David and Bishop Flaget “convincing reasons” why she should not retain leadership for life. … Interim periods out of office allowed Catherine to return to Louisville to her beloved orphans … On the streets of Louisville, she became a recognized figure, either visiting businesses to beg for the orphans or attending to the poor in their homes. It was said that “you are our only refuge … Every orphan in the city claims you as their mother.” One such errand to a destitute family occasioned Catherine Spalding’s final illness. She contracted pneumonia and died on March 20, 1858. Her spirit lives in her Sisters, international now in membership and in ministries of education, care of the sick, impoverished, and orphan, and advocacy for social justice, in five nations of North and Central America, Asia, and Africa. The decisive word is, “If Mother Catherine were here, she would go.” To read the complete short biography as it appears on the National Women’s History Museum website go to: www.scnfamily.org/nwhm.
St. Vincent de Paul Letter
made its way to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth thanks to a generous donor. The letter is a treasure to the Congregation because the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth were founded in the tradition of St. Vincent de Paul (1580–1660). Born to a peasant family in France, Vincent studied humanities and theology and was ordained in 1600. He devoted his life to the oppressed, caring for the sick, the poor, and the imprisoned. He was the founder of many seminaries throughout France as well as the Daughters of Charity.
She could hardly contain her excitement as she took the piece of stationary into Kathy Hertel-Baker, the director of SCN archives. Was she really holding a letter written by a saint — Vincent De Paul? Anna Powell, the assistant archivist, had only been with the SCNs for a few months. Every week brought surprises as she pored over boxes of records, files and photos. But the letter by St. Vincent de Paul, knocked her socks off! From Saint Lazare, 7 July 1648 The Reverend Father Boulart is assured by his servant Vincent that he [Vincent] has given his (formal) agreement about the Abbey of Nieuil in favor of Reverend Father Beurrier. This [agreement] has been sent to Mr. de la Rose, secretary to Monseigneur the Cardinal, to have it sent on to him.
The point of the letter is that Saint Vincent, a member of the Council for Ecclesiastical Affairs, had to give his formal agreement to giving the Abbey to Father Beurrier. Vincent’s agreement had to be sent to Cardinal Richelieu before it could be acted on. Saint Vincent is reassuring his correspondent, Father Boulart, that it has been taken care of.
VINCENS DEPAUL Unworthy priest of the Mission.
The letter was purchased at an auction in Boston, Mass., in the 1990s and
When the first members of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth made their religious vows on Feb. 2, 1816, they took the vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and perseverance according to the Rule of St. Vincent de Paul. Since the late 1990s, the Sisters have safely kept the letter among treasured artifacts. In the weeks since Anna came across the letter, Kathy has been quick to point out, “It is not unusual to rediscover things that had been put away for safekeeping.”

Sister Paula went to Mississippi as a novice with the SCN Congregation in 1981, and has been there ever since. She grew up in Massachusetts, but says she has found a home in the deep South. Sister Paula and Sister Margaret Held, OSF, both nurse practitioners, rotate working, one week at a time, at the Lexington Medical Clinic and the Durant Primary Care Clinic, located in Holmes County, Miss. Holmes County is one of the poorest counties in the state, and Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the country. The unemployment rate in the county is recorded as 23.1% for 2010. WRAPPED IN PRAYER
It was a touching moment, expectant faces looking up, beaming even, as one by one, handmade shawls were tucked around their shoulders, often followed by a hug.
The shawls, prayer shawls, are a symbol of the Sisters’ love for those in their care, even when they are not able to be present in person. The shawls were made by SCNs living at the Motherhouse in Nazareth, Ky., and given to residents at Nazareth Home, in Louisville, Ky. The shawls were blessed and placed around the shoulders of each resident who attended the special prayer service. Several Sisters have been knitting and crocheting prayer shawls for the last few months. One of the Sisters, Rosemarie Kirwan, SCN, was drawn to this ministry because she has seen firsthand the impact an item of comfort, made in prayer and blessed, can have. She recounts how her brother, Harry, found comfort in a prayer blanket that had been given to him prior to having six bypasses and how she, too, received a prayer blanket when she was facing heart surgery. Both prayer blankets had been knitted by the members of the Church of the Epiphany in Louisville and each blanket had been blessed at the end of Mass, by members of that community. This gesture, a blessing by the people, is especially touching to Sister Rosemarie. When she found out about the prayer shawl ministry at the SCN Motherhouse, Sister Rosemarie says she was eager to be a part of it. “I think it is a tangible sign of one’s care and concern for others. When a person is sick, confused, or depressed, I think that anything they can reach out and touch (brings comfort) because it is a symbol of a community’s concern and support.” The idea for SCNs at the Motherhouse to create prayer shawls for some of the residents at Nazareth Home, surfaced after Mary Haynes, administrator of Nazareth

Home, read an article about prayer shawls. The Prayer Shawl ministry was started by Janet Bristow and Victoria Galo, two graduates of the Women’s Leadership Institute at The Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut. Their Web site, www. shawlministry.com, describes the ministry: Compassion and the love of knitting/crocheting have been combined into a prayerful ministry and spiritual practice which reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace, as well as in celebration and joy. These special shawls can be given for a number of reasons - to those undergoing medical procedures; as comfort after a loss or in times of stress; as a wedding or baby shower gift; or to mark a graduation, birthday, anniversary, ordination, or holiday. Recently Sister Rosemarie once again shared her own prayer blanket. This time she loaned it to a friend undergoing treatment for cancer. The friend, another SCN, started to return the blanket after her initial surgery. Sister Rosemarie, resolute in the comfort that a prayer blanket or prayer shawl can give, encouraged her friend to keep it, at least for a few more weeks. The friend, even as she sits wrapped in the blanket undergoing radiation treatment, is also engaged in making prayer shawls for others. Ever mindful of those in need and of the power of prayer blankets and prayer shawls, Sister Rosemarie says that each time she begins to knit, she prays that once completed, the shawl will “take care of them (the person who receives the shawl) in whatever way they need.” If you would like to begin to knit or crochet prayer shawls for residents of Nazareth Home or others in need, please contact Diane Curtis or go to www. shawlministry.com for more information. If you know of someone in need of a prayer shawl, please contact Diane Curtis at dcurtis@scnazarethky.org.

“BeFrienders” Ministry at Nazareth Home An innovative program designed to meet the spiritual needs of nursing home residents and the many transitions that they face is blossoming at Nazareth Home in Louisville, Ky. Five years ago, the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Pastoral Care office, directed by the Rev. Paul Scaglione, expanded its “BeFriender Ministry” from parish work to include Pastoral Care Teams in hospitals. In the fall of 2009, Mary Anne Burkardt, SCN, prompted by a hospital “BeFriender,” called Rev. Paul to explore the possibility of training a team to volunteer in a nursing home setting, like Nazareth Home. The idea is now a reality and Rev. Paul describes the Nursing Home “BeFriender Ministry” as one that, “offers prayerful support through compassionate listening and caring for residents,
building ongoing relationships with residents as they transition from their home or another medical facility. This ministry is the visible arm of the Church embracing people with gentleness and compassion to diminish the profound effects of aging and illness that isolate and detach people from their familiar home environments. The team members become companions of care walking with residents as they undertake these steps in their life journey.” In January of this year, three volunteers stepped forward to become the first members of the BeFriender Pastoral Care Team at Nazareth Home. The three, Barry Queenan, Judy Seidt and Penny McTighe were commissioned during Nazareth Home’s daily Mass on April 16, 2010. A number of goals for the new program have been identified including meeting the needs of those transitioning to a nursing home, journeying with those facing terminal illness, and being present to residents and families as they deal with end-of-lifeissues. Once again, Nazareth Home is a “pioneer” in finding innovative ways to bring care and comfort to its residents.

Vincentian Home Celebration Recent celebrations took place at Vincentian Home in Pittsburgh, Pa., as Bishop David A. Zubik presided over a blessing and dedication ceremony to mark the completion of two new buildings providing skilled nursing care. “This was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our Catholic values as we continue to plan for the opening of our new buildings. We remain focused on our mission of providing joyful compassionate care to the residents we serve. It’s nice to take a moment to reflect on the importance of our work in the midst of so much growth,” says Anne Kull, SCN, administrator, Vincentian Home. This SCN ministry, Vincentian Home, has been a mainstay in the North Hills of Pittsburgh since 1924. Construction was recently completed on 120 private rooms with en suite bathrooms divided into neighborhoods of 30. Two of the neighborhoods will support longterm care residents. One neighborhood will be a secure memory care unit focused on providing for the cognitive, behavioral and physical issues that impede a resident’s quality of life. Another neighborhood will be designated for short-term rehabilitation. Health care experts with Vincentian Collaborative System point out that the model of resident care is changing for skilled nursing facilities. Facilities are trying to move away from rigid schedules in institutional settings where everyone does the same thing at the same time with the goal of providing residents with as much choice as possible and creating a home-like atmosphere. Vincentian Home’s new building design boasts an abundance of features designed to imitate home and support an atmosphere of dignity and choice for residents. 9

Honoring Two Years Together Sisters around the world came together on Nov. 13, 2010, to mark the two-year anniversary of the merger of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. A prayer service, held in St. Vincent Church, Nazareth, Ky., was webcast to Sisters in ministry in other parts of the United States, India, Nepal, Botswana and Belize. The moving prayer and reflection included the following excerpt: … For the inspiration of Mother Catherine and Mother Emerentiana which calls us to live more deeply our spirituality and service to others. Truly, the SCN Community and SCN ministries have been enriched through the coming-together of these two Congregations. www.scnfamily.org
They are Moms … and Sisters Too Perhaps it’s not a well-known fact but women who were once married and those who have children, can sometimes find themselves on the path to become a Sister. Women who have received God’s call and are divorced or widowed are welcomed by many congregations, as well as those who have children, provided their children are grown and independent. These women, both Sisters and mothers are affectionately referred to as Sister Moms.
of her aunt, Joseph Beatrice Eyl, SCN, who introduced her to the congregation. On finding a balance between family and community, Sister Bea says, “My children always support me. They understand how well I fit in here. They see that the Sisters truly love me.”
Recognizing this growing trend, and a Sister Mom herself, Bea Keller, SCN, decided to start a support group for Sister Moms. She founded the Sister Moms Organization. There are many Sister Moms around the world. The Sister Moms Organization consists of 125 members, affiliated with 98 religious congregations — located in five countries. The concept of mothers choosing to enter religious life is not a new one. History reveals many saints, who in addition to being wives and mothers, were also members, as well as founders, of religious congregations. Today, the idea of Sister Moms is experiencing resurgence with more religious congregations welcoming Sister Moms as members. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have two Sister Moms: SCNs Bea Keller and Angela Hicks. Sister Bea was an Associate with another congregation before coming to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth 20 years ago. She was drawn to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth because
Angela Hicks, SCN (wearing glasses and black in the middle of this group), is surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Sister Angela admits that at first she struggled with her desire to return to community life. She had been a member of the community and then felt pulled in a different direction. During that time she worked as a bartender, town cop, substitute teacher, in social services and as a librarian. She married a man with seven children and had three more. In 1989 she was widowed and had ten grown children. She began to experience her calling again. “Everyone in community had BAs and PhDs for everything. I felt like I might have little to offer,” says Sister Angela. “But the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth welcomed me back home.” Sister Angela says she chose to return to the community — for community. Her children understand her decision and support her wholeheartedly. “If mom is happy, the kids are happy,” she says. Since returning to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Sister Angela has lived in Botswana, Africa where she helped start SCN ministries. Now at home in Nazareth, Sister Angela continues to be actively involved in a number of projects.
ABOVE — Bea Keller, SCN, surrounded by her children, now grown. TOP — The Kellers, as small children, years before their Mother, Sister Bea, chose to become a “Sister Mom.”
Both Sisters Bea and Angela agree that every Sister Mom has a unique story to tell. They often have an interesting set of life experiences and a wealth of knowledge regarding relationships both with family and with God. And, they add, these women possess a special strength as they make this second journey in life.

CHANGING LIVES IN BOTSWANA
SCN MINISTRY CELEBRATES TEN YEARS
Angela Hicks, SCN, can barely keep from smiling as she talks about her visit to Botswana to celebrate 10 years of ministry there. As one of the pioneers, she and four other SCNs had many hopes when they first arrived in Botswana in 2000, but Sister Angela still can’t believe all that has happened in just 10 years, especially in the last few years since she has returned to the United States. New construction and new roads have popped up everywhere. SCN ministries are growing and flourishing in areas the Sisters had never imagined. But the most heartwarming sight of all — the open arms of the people she came to love during her years of ministering there. It was as if she had never left. Sister Angela fondly recalls the night she decided she wanted to be part of setting up a new ministry in Botswana. Maria Vincent Brocato, SCN, had just returned from Botswana and was talking passionately about the possibility of taking up ministry there. Among the pressing needs, an orphanage to give homes to those children whose parents had fallen ill or died as a result of being infected by HIV. Being part of such a ground-breaking facility seemed a perfect fit for Sister Angela, a mother and grandmother, and also an SCN. Though never asked directly to go to Botswana, Sister Angela says she felt a strong calling and one phrase kept turning over in her head, “I want to be part of that.” So a few days later after confiding her desire to family and friends, she picked up the phone to call Sister Maria. She was surprised by Sister Maria’s response, “I was praying you would want to go.” To say Sister Angela’s experience in Botswana was 11

profound is an understatement. Her face turns to anguish as she speaks of the death and dying she saw all around her. The needs were overwhelming in the sub-Saharan country where according to news reports, one in three adults was affected or infected by HIV. Remembering a young couple she came to know, she talked of how they discovered they both had AIDs only after their baby became very ill and died from the disease. Distraught, the parents turned to Sister Angela and asked that she and other Sisters attend the funeral and offer prayers. Sister Angela says the family had so little, and money was so scarce, that they had to borrow a truck from the Sisters to carry the body of the baby for burial. She also describes how the blessing of the child took place in the back room of the funeral parlor, the “work area,” cluttered by dirt, tools and caskets. The child, says Angela, lay in a small box, in the middle of the floor, as funeral workers stapled cloth inside the box, and she adds, no one picked up the baby, they just stapled the cloth around her, rushing to finish the work. Overwhelmed by the urge to hold the child, but not wanting to hurt anyone’s feelings, she stood motionless. It is one of many experiences she can not shake. This year as the Congregation marks 10 years since establishing a presence in the country, Sister Angela says the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are definitely making a difference. SCNs continue to respond to the needs of the time and the ongoing struggle to help people prevent and cope with HIV and extreme poverty. With great reverence, members of our SCN family talk of the work of the pioneers in Botswana — SCNs Angela and Patricia Huitt from the www.scnfamily.org

United States and Sarita Manavalan, Nalini Meachariyill and Ann Muthukattil from India. These five embraced the challenge of learning the Setswana language and local customs in order to provide medical, educational and pastoral ministry to the people of Botswana. From the very beginning, the Sisters worked tirelessly to provide physical, emotional and spiritual comfort. Sister Nalini speaking of the early years, says one patient in particular stays with her. “AIDS patients long for human touch. One day as I embraced a patient, she cried a lot and said, ‘Today
I feel that I am a human being because you touched me. My mother is so afraid to touch me that she uses gloved hands even to comb my hair. Have I become so untouchable? Will God also use gloves to touch me?’” Since the first SCN mission in Botswana was established in Kanye, ministries have expanded to other areas. Though an SCN orphanage did not become a reality, three day care centers and a new hospice are flourishing and our Sisters are very involved in pastoral ministry. Over the years, several members of the SCN family have come to the beautiful country to minister. In 2004, SCNs Vinaya Chalil and Prisca Tirkey left India to serve in Botswana. Lay Mission volunteers have also been eager to travel to Africa to share their talents as have SCN Associates. In 2005, Tootsie Gish, SCNA, spent three months in Botswana exploring the possibility of beginning ministry there. She returned home to Louisville, Ky., sold her home, and returned to Botswana with her possessions in one backpack and a suitcase, becoming the first SCN Associate to join Sisters in ministry in Botswana on a full-time basis. Today her love of the country is contagious as she talks about working alongside the Sisters. Recently, SCNs Olive Pinto and Sunila Erumangallathu, left friends and family behind in India, but enthusiastically embraced the challenges of ministry in Botswana. This last October, SCN President Mary Elizabeth Miller, travelled to South Africa to celebrate the 10-year milestone. She visited the hospice and says she was truly touched by the care and the comfort the patients are receiving in the new facility and by the spirit of those giving the care, including men and women who themselves have had to come to terms with being infected with or affected by the HIV virus. At a special service on Oct. 9, 2010, residents, priests, and members of other religious Congregations gathered to help the SCN family celebrate. Words were spoken praising the efforts of the SCNs and the Congregation was asked to once again consider sending additional Sisters and Associates to minister in that country. Over and over during this time of celebrating 10 years of ministry, in words and in song, the SCNs were thanked for all they have done … and all they will do. Her blue eyes twinkling as she recalls her days in Botswana, Sister Angela tells how the people of Botswana would always say, “if you want something done, ask a Charity.” “You know,” says Sister Angela, “some things never change.” Sisters of Charity of Nazareth • Vol. III 2010

Working to Empower Others Surkhet, a remote village in Nepal is a challenging place to access for the most seasoned traveler or adventurer. It is an even more challenging place to live. Rosita Kavilpurayidathil, SCN, calls Surkhet home. She has lived in Nepal for more than 25 years working tirelessly from village to village to improve the lives of women, children, former prisoners and the mentally and physically challenged. A pioneer, she has often forged new ministries at the height of political and civil unrest. Friends and family say nothing seems to keep her from helping others. Tireless and tenacious, she once walked for a day and a half to get to the nearest airport after being stranded by road blocks. And when it comes to reaching out to women and children in remote villages with no passable roads, she makes her way through the hills and rough terrain, on foot. Sister Rosita has been instrumental in starting two formal schools in Dharan and Surkhet. She has also built up the Navjyoti Centre. There she has started empowerment programs for women, helped train government teachers in Special Education and reached out to prisoners. When the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in India made the decision to spread to other parts of Nepal, Sister Rosita, who had already been in that country for 15 years, volunteered to leave the area she knew so well to move to another place of need. In 13
Sisters of Charity of Nazareth • Vol. III 2010
2000, she moved to Surkhet and lost no time in getting to know the people and finding ways to help empower those living in the villages. Sister Rosita says her priority has always been literacy, education, and empowerment. Today, thanks to the efforts of members of the SCN family, there are 51 self-help groups for women and 14 child centers to prepare migrant workers’ older children for school. Sister Rosita works to ensure that women in the self-help groups learn to read, at least at a basic level, and develop a new skill or trade. The women can attend classes in knitting, tailoring, painting, agriculture and group formation. Most of the children in the area are enrolled in regular schools. The women who have completed training have been able to start their own small businesses or now cultivate their own fields, which adds to the family’s income and dramatically improves living circumstances. Health care has also improved. Women and children have access to medical care and are immunized regularly. Word of Sister Rosita’s efforts has spread like wildfire! Women in other villages, upon seeing what’s happening with the Navjyoti women’s groups, seek out Sister Rosita for guidance and training. Sister Rosita is a simple woman of few words. She is described as gentle and charismatic with an ability to draw people www.scnfamily.org
to her and to instill in others the desire to find ways to help oneself and improve one’s life. In 2009, Bridget Kappalumakal, SCN, travelled to Surkhet to see firsthand the impact that Sister Rosita is having in Nepal. She wrote the following. Surkhet is a beautiful place and Sister Rosita Kavilpurayidathil, our pioneer woman there, has done wonders with the people, especially women and children. Everyone knows Rosita and they love and respect her as she went there in the year 2000 with almost nothing. She lived with the people and ate with them and slept where they slept. The people owned her up as their own. She lived like that for several years ‌ Now, there is the beautiful Women’s Centre and a thriving training program along with the school which has about 150 students under the direction of Dolcie D’Mello, SCN, and teachers. There is also a live, vibrant mobile health clinic carried out by our enthusiastic and committed, Cecilia Simick, SCN, and team. The saying, “one mission but many ministries’’ is concretely seen here as all of the ministries work together as an integrated whole for the good of the people of Surkhet. For her passion and commitment to the people of Nepal, Sister Rosita recently received the “Certificate of Appreciationâ€? from the Education Ministry in Kathmandu for contributions in the

field of education. Humble and quiet, she was reluctant to accept that she should be recognized with such an award. Perhaps Sister Bridget’s writings express the thoughts of so many best. I was very much impressed by what one woman (Sister Rosita) can do with her selflessness and dedication in bringing out the best in others especially the poor women and giving them dignity and a place in the family and society.
St. Vincent Home, a hostel facility for girls, has opened at Preranlaya, Musunuru. The new SCN ministry is a collaboration with the Diocese of Vijayawada. SCNs Sudha Rani Jonnalagadda and Lilly Luka Vayampallitharapel are in ministry at Musunuru. Sister Sudha works with the girls, 10 of them from remote villages. They stay at the hostel and attend the nearby school. Free textbooks, notebooks, and a mid-day meal are provided. The girls are also able to attend daily Mass and prayers with the Sisters. Sister Sudha helps the girls study each night. Tailoring classes are also taking place in the new SCN facility. This area of India is remote and many of the residents live in extreme poverty. Hurricane Blasts Belize SCN family members in Belize are safe and helping others to recover in the the aftermath of Hurricane Richard which hit the Central American country on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010. Shortly after the hurricane made landfall, the Sisters there wrote: “Gratefully, we are doing well. We only had some flooding downstairs (in the home in Belize City) and had to do a lot of cleaning in the aftermath of the hurricane. Sister Carlette had some water coming in under the doors in the house in Las Flores but nothing major. Also, we lost a few trees. In Belize City, we now have power restored but many people still don’t. Schools are out for almost the entire week because of the water damage and
major clean-up that has to be done. The worst loss is crop damage which will take a heavy toll on an already strained and struggling economy. Mexico has reached out with rations for people whose homes were destroyed, and the business communities are assisting generously. It certainly was a scary experience with winds packing about 95 mph and incessant heavy rain, but the water receded quickly. Do continue to pray for us as a nation. It will take some time to get over this one. But then again, we are dealing with resilient people.” Clean up and recovery efforts are underway in Belize. Sister Lucy: A Legend in the Classroom, continued from page 1 Sister Lucy has also helped others to develop lives of deep faith. In one of her writings, a letter, she encouraged a dear friend to “set aside 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night to talk to God. Some of that time should be spent listening, for the reply. Don’t argue or worry. Just sit still and listen. That is a way to peace and calm. The answer may not come the first few times, but be patient and it will come to you.” Vice Provincial Adeline Fehribach, SCN, says Sister Lucy has had a lasting impact on the lives of many, “She helped to forge a road for women through the wilderness and it is never easy being a true pioneer. It is only because of women like her, of her generation, that I and other women like me, are able to be who we are today, and are involved in some of the work we do.” Indeed, Sister Lucy has left an amazing legacy both intangible and tangible. The UofL library now houses the Lucy M. Freibert Collection, a gift from Sister Lucy, a 1,059 volume personal library which contains signed first editions and correspondence with contemporary women writers such as bell hooks, Marine Kumin, Marge Piercy and Alice Walker.
No doubt the UofL Library and SCN archives also have a wealth of Sister Lucy’s writings full of insight, wit and humor. Among the favorites, an address to the Freshman Class of 1991 entitled “The Universe, the University, and You.” In addressing a packed room full of bright eyed-students, mostly freshman, and their parents, she offered sage advice on becoming a life long learner and an agent of change. “… If in the few minutes I can move one or a hundred of you to live a happier, more exciting intellectual life than you would have otherwise have had, my influence will go on multiplying, through you, generation after generation to infinity. Socrates will have nothing on me except that he got an earlier start and had Plato for his press agent.” Sisters of Charity of Nazareth • Vol. III 2010

The Nazareth Retreat Center “Warmth and Kindness meets me at the door.”
“This is such a beautiful place … the nature … the history … and the hospitality.” “Our group had one of its best meetings … thank you so much.” These are just a few of the reflections, words of praise and thanks, shared by women and men who have experienced the Nazareth Retreat Center on the Nazareth Campus just outside Bardstown, Ky. The center opened its doors Sept. 1, 2009 and has welcomed over 3,000 guests in its first year. With the awareness that today’s culture speeds up time and fills every moment with activity and sound, Nazareth Retreat Center invites people to take “time apart” from the “nonstop” world around them. Sharon Gray, SCN, Director of the Nazareth Retreat Center, firmly believes that “time for reflection and the opportunity to simply be in an atmosphere of beauty and quiet is a precious gift that one can give oneself.” Sister Sharon has noticed a trend over the last year that many retreatants who come here are seeking simple refreshment from the hustle and bustle of daily life. They are also seeking their connection to God and God’s presence in their life when times are difficult or confusing, or when one wants to experience moments of joy and delight. She adds, “the people who have graced us with their presence come from diverse backgrounds and all bring such gifts to us by simply being who they are. We have groups who attend our regular retreat offerings and those hosted groups who come for their own discernment and retreat gatherings. We have individuals who come for ongoing spiritual direction and those who come for private retreats. It is truly beautiful to hear their laughter and walk with them during times of reflection.” The staff of the Nazareth Retreat Center admit that it has been a challenge to restructure a retreat center at Nazareth following the closing of the Catherine Spalding Center, the long-standing retreat center on campus. However, it is the strong desire of the Sisters to maintain a center for spirituality and a place where people can come and experience the beauty of Nazareth and the welcoming and hospitality of the Sisters. In addition to Sister Sharon, Carol McKean, SCN, is also helping to grow the center. Sister Carol is quick to point out that the individuals and groups who have come to visit are always quite pleased with the accommodations, the meeting rooms, the grounds, and the spaces for overnight stays. “We consider ourselves a retreat center without walls in that we use available space across the campus for our retreatants and groups and they seem to really love the diverse and historic surroundings,” says Sister Carol. Nazareth Retreat Center has offered nationally known guest speakers for their retreats such as Paula D’Arcy, Miriam Therese MacGillis, O.P., and David Haas. The retreats at Nazareth Retreat Center vary in style, topic and length. This year a number of weekend retreats are offered covering such topics as a retreat for those recovering from addictions, a retreat for liturgical cantors, 27

and a weekend on Therese of Lisieux. In addition the center, in collaboration with St. Catharine College, is offering a four-day retreat/ workshop on “Care for the earth – the meeting of Science and Spirituality.” In the Spring and Summer the center will have retreats on prayer, discernment and a week-long directed retreat among other offerings. In addition, the Nazareth Retreat Center staff offers days of prayer and/or facilitation to groups throughout the Kentuckiana area. The center also offers one-on-one spiritual direction. So from a small beginning based on the hopes of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Nazareth Retreat Center has grown from a vision, to a vibrant place of welcome, a place where all are invited to enjoy the beauty of Nazareth. For more information about the Nazareth Retreat Center go to www.nazarethreatcenterky.org. Sister Sharon can be reached at 502-348-1597 or sgray@scnky.org. Sister Carol can be contacted at 502-348-1513 or cmckean@scnky.org.

reetings from Nazareth, Ky.! As plans get underway to celebrate 200 years of ministry in 2012, we recall the humble beginnings of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in a log cabin at St. Thomas Farm near Bardstown, Ky. In 1812, in the newly-formed diocese of Bardstown, Bishop Benedict Flaget was overwhelmed by the responsibility of providing religious education for the children of more than a thousand Catholic families who had migrated to Kentucky from Maryland after the Revolutionary War. Six women stepped forward willing to devote their lives to the service of the Church. Over the years, the Sisters have developed a reputation for a willingness to respond to the needs of the times. Rooted in Kentucky, the SCN family has grown to embrace the world with ministries that educate, advocate, and empower. Members of the SCN family are tackling global poverty and injustice through the creation of a number of innovative programs. Did you know that 40 percent of the people around the world, approximately 2.5 billion, live in poverty and struggle to live on less than $2 a day? Together, we are able to help people around the world with access to education, skills training, clean water and sanitation, nourishing food, safe housing, and health care. We also strive to teach others to care for the earth and to reduce, reuse and recycle. We see potential in every life we touch, the potential to rise from poverty and to go on to help others to learn to help themselves. We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are
committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
Check out a new way to partner with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, a new website. It’s called rerouteit.org. Pass it on. Pay it forward. You know the concept. A new pair of shoes for you is good for a night out … for someone on the other side of the world, it might be his/her only pair. Rather than filling your life with things you don’t need, send it where it counts. We can help you do that with Reroute It. The website allows you the opportunity to see ways in which your money will make a concrete difference in the lives of others. Your donation will go where it makes a difference for people in great need.
