Letter from the President Mary Elizabeth Miller, SCN Dear Friends, For many of us the beginning of the new year is a time to look back with gratitude for all God’s gifts to us during the past year. It is also a time to make new resolutions, to plan to live differently and to anticipate the blessings God has in store for us in the year ahead. A new year brings with it a message of hope and a new sense of peace. As we walk through the new year we will experience the Creator in many different ways. Our mind and heart speak gratitude as we feel, hear, touch, smell and taste the fruits of the earth particular to each season. Our relationship with God develops as we immerse ourselves in giving praise for the wonder that surrounds us. This is the mystery of building a relationship with the God of Great Love and being called to be the living presence of love in the lives of each of us. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are at an historic milestone as we begin 2012, our Bicentennial year! United in thanking God for the graces and blessings of the past, we pray in hope and trust as we look to the future. We have a unique opportunity to build on the 200 years of steady growth, service to God and community, and a multitude of achievements. We are challenged to move forward in faith, impelled by the love of Christ, envisioning a future full of hope. We recently launched a major campaign, Educating Young Women for a Better World: Honoring our Heritage, Giving Hope for the Future. Our goal is to raise $500,000 to provide 200 scholarships for women and girls around the world. The campaign is well on the way. Our most heartfelt thanks to those who have already responded with a contribution. Will you join us? A contribution will ensure that, with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, you will leave your mark on women and girls into the next century! May you experience God’s overwhelming blessings during the new year!

Educating Young Women for a Better World: Honoring our Heritage, Giving Hope for the Future The ministry of education is one of the first ministries of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, dating back to Aug. 23, 1814, when Nazareth Academy opened at Old St. Thomas in Kentucky. This first school was dedicated to the education of girls and young women. In a “Survey of the Educational Ministry of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth,” Miriam Corcoran, SCN, notes that “within 19 years of the Community’s foundation, Sisters of Charity of Nazareth were directing the intellectual, artistic, moral, and spiritual formation of girls and young women in five educational institutions.” She also pointed out that in the early days, the Sisters established “free schools” near the academies so that students who were unable to pay tuition could receive a Catholic education. Since the founding of the Congregation and the merger of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity, until today, SCNs have taught in over 300 schools. The SCN commitment to education is felt in every geographic location of the Congregation: the United States, India, Nepal, Belize and Botswana. As part of the SCN Bicentennial Celebration, members of the SCN family have joined together and pledged to generate 200 scholarships for girls and young women worldwide. The Congregation believes that an education is one of the greatest and most powerful gifts to individuals and to our world. Some may ask, “why girls and young women?” According to the United Nations, approximately 40 million girls worldwide do not go to school because • they cannot afford the fees; or • the school is too far; or • they must earn money to care for their families. Without an education, girls are at greater risk of experiencing hunger, violence, and disease.

Box 9 Nazareth, KY 40048 (502) 348-1551 lwilson@scnazarethky.org This scholarship fundraising campaign is set for two years. Once the funds have been raised, schools will be identified to receive the scholarship funds. The schools will select scholarship recipients.
Educating girls helps build self-esteem as well as strong families, strong economies, and a better world. A Catholic education helps prepare students with a firm faith that guides all life decisions.

Looking to the Future … and Honoring Our Past Profound and powerful, two words heard often in the days following the Opening Ceremony in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. On Dec. 3, approximately 250 people came together in Crimmins Hall at Nazareth, Ky., returning to the grounds where Mother Catherine Spalding, the Congregation’s foundress, had once lived and ministered. Walking into the Banner Room, Sisters, Associates, employees and friends of the SCN Community were immediately reminded that the SCNs are an international Congregation. Projected onto the walls of the room were live videos of our SCN family members gathered in four locations. The world was brought into this room for the historic Bicentennial Celebration, the launching of a year of events leading up to the official 200th anniversary on Dec. 1, 2012. Through the magic of technology, Pittsburgh, India/Nepal, Belize and Botswana and many others around the globe were able to participate in the Opening Ceremony live. Just steps away in St. Vincent Church, about 100 Sisters, Associates and friends were gathered to watch the broadcast of the Opening Ceremony. Many more joined the webcasted event at home via computer. Those in attendance or who participated by webcast were treated to a two-hour telling of the 200year history of the SCN Congregation. The presentation was a mix of live monologues and videos from ministry sites. Different parts of the history were told from India, where the SCNs started in 1947, Belize, where the Congregation took root in 1975, Botswana where SCNs founded ministries in 2000 and Pittsburgh where SCNs merged with the Vincentian Sisters of Charity in 2008. The Opening Ceremony was centered on the theme of a tree, the roots represent the Congregation’s beginnings, in Nelson County, Ky. The branches, reaching out from the tree, represent the ministries and works of the Sisters as the Congregation expands to embrace the world. Sharon Gray, SCN, and members of the committee that wove together many elements for the Opening Ceremony worked hard to convey a very important message, “It’s our history to meet the needs of the people, our motivations. That same charism is alive no matter what country we are in.” 3

early in the planning process that they might not be able to accommodate everyone at the campus for the Opening Celebration. That is why creativity and technology were so crucial. With the desire to have another event in a larger venue able to accommodate the public, a Mass is being planned for Dec. 1, 2012, in the Cathedral of the Assumption in Louisville, Ky., to celebrate the 200th anniversary. Other celebrations are planned throughout the year including the unveiling of a new painting of Mother Catherine Spalding on March 18, 2012, at Nazareth, an alumni gathering in September, and a reunion for Members of the Central Leadership team SCNs Teresa Kottoran, Susan Gatz, and Mary Elizabeth Miller, share a smile with the former members. late Archbishop Thomas Kelly, and Archbishop Joseph E. Presentation Celebrates Academy Marks 180th Anniversary and the SCN Congregation’s 200th in 2012
A stunning new banner now hangs on the historic tower of Presentation Academy. It is a portrait of Mother Catherine Spalding, the foundress of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and Presentation. The banner is striking and serves as a reminder of the impact Mother Catherine has had upon Louisville, Ky., and ministries around the world. The blessing of the banner took place in November to mark the academy’s 180th anniversary and in anticipation of the SCN Congregation’s 200th anniversary in 2012. Numerous dignitaries attended the blessing including Congressman John Yarmuth, Mr. and Mrs. George Fischer representing their son — Mayor Greg Fischer, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, and both the presidents of Presentation Academy and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Congregation. Other honored guests, Mother Catherine herself, portrayed by Susan Gatz, SCN, along with the three Sisters in the roles of the three SCNs who helped found Presentation Academy in 1831. Mother Catherine has been recognized for her visionary leadership. In 1813, when no education for girls, no private health care, and no organized social services existed on the Kentucky frontier, Catherine Spalding, aged 19, was elected leader of six women forming a new religious community, the Sisters of Charity 5

of Nazareth. On Jan. 6, 2003, the Louisville Courier-Journal named Mother Catherine the only woman among 16 persons selected as the “most influential people in Louisville/Jefferson County history.” During the blessing of the Mother Catherine banner, the school’s founders, Mother Catherine and her three companions — Sisters Claire Gardiner, Serena Carney and Apollonia McGill, spoke to the student body. Carrying out the role of Mother Catherine, Sister Susan, vice president of the Congregation, told the students that, “So much of what I wanted for the young girls of our time is what I believe is being given to you here at Pres.” Adding, “From the beginning, academic excellence and faith were paramount at Presentation. … We knew that young women were leaders at home, and we believed that they could be leaders beyond the home. Visitors to the SCN Motherhouse Campus, Nazareth, Ky., will be greeted by a large banner depicting foundress Mother Catherine Spalding. The banner hangs from the columns of the Motherhouse above the front steps. The banner went up just before the Bicentennial Opening Celebration in early December 2011, and installing it was a tricky feat. Thanks to the hard work of employees to get the banner displayed in the right location and in a thoughtful manner, the banner is stunning. Archbishop Kurtz reflected during the anniversary celebration, “What a wonderful backdrop as we, in a sense, not only celebrate the past but, mindful of the present, look forward to the future of Presentation Academy.” The Archbishop further remarked, “The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, beginning with the work of Mother Catherine Spalding and her companions, continue to live on in Jefferson County and most especially here in downtown Louisville.” Congressman Yarmuth emphasized to those gathered in the packed Presentation Arts & Athletic Center that “Louisville has grown up around Presentation. And many of the young women who have left their marks on Presentation’s tower have gone on to leave their marks on Louisville.”
Mother Catherine and three Sisters opened Presentation Academy in the basement of St. Louis Church in Louisville in 1831. As the oldest continuously operating high school in Louisville, Presentation survived the Civil War, two world wars, the cholera epidemic of 1832, two fires, and the flood of 1937. When Mother Catherine founded Presentation, Andrew Jackson served as president and Nat Turner unsuccessfully led a slave rebellion in Virginia. Since then, Pres students have witnessed the end of slavery, the rise and fall of prohibition, the assassinations of four

Stamp Unveiled at Nazareth
Stamp depicts 16th century painting Madonna of the Candelabra by Raphael The Nazareth Post Office and the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth came together in November to unveil a Christmas stamp. Dozens of people packed the O’Connell Hall drawing room to get a sneak peak at the stamp. For many years, the United States Postal Service has issued “traditional” Christmas stamps featuring the Madonna and Child. The Christmas stamp for 2011 features a detail from a painting by artist Raphael. That work, Madonna of the Candelabra, dates to around 1513. It now hangs in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Md.

We looked forward each day to the arrival of the mail truck, and waited with great anticipation for letters and care packages from home!” Sister Mary Kevin was in attendance at the recent unveiling and received an ovation.
Among the guests for the unveiling, more than 130 students from St. Joseph Elementary School and St. Joseph Montessori. The students participated in a Christmas stamp design contest and were recognized during the unveiling. The students were also able to see their artwork on display. Also in attendance: area dignitaries, community leaders, the Vicar General, and many Sisters. Nazareth’s Post Office has an especially rich history. A Journey Back in Time On Oct. 13, 2011, 34 Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and Associates boarded a bus headed to sites of early missions by the Sisters, many of which are in the Owensboro Diocese. The trip was part of the Bicentennial Celebration of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The drive to Western Kentucky from Nazareth, Ky., took three hours as the Sisters made their way to various locations. Among the highlights, the Sisters visited the site of the former St. Vincent’s Academy near Morganfield, Ky. They also went to a nearby cemetery where SCNs are buried and reconnected with residents at a luncheon.
Charlene Jacobs, SCN, read a little from the SCN centennial book by Anna Blanche McGill, SCN, as the group approached each of the sites from early SCN Kentucky missions. Among the sites visited, Bethlehem Academy which was opened in Bardstown in 1819; St. Frances Academy in Owensboro which was established in 1849; St. Vincent Academy founded by SCNs in 1820; St. Ann School in Morganfield, opened in 1912; and St. Rose Academy in Uniontown, Ky., which opened in 1872 (later named St. Agnes).
Christmas Parade
As part of the Bicentennial Celebration, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth sponsored a float in the Bardstown, Ky., Christmas parade on Dec. 1, 2011. The float depicted Mother Catherine Spalding and another Sister surrounded by pioneer children in the early days of the Congregation. The children are children of some of our SCN employees. The float received loud applause as it reached the town square.

Book Review Impelled by the Love of Christ: Sisters of Charity of Nazareth 1924–1936 Distinguished author and historian, Rev. Clyde Crews, Bellarmine University, reviewed the most recent release in the Impelled by the Love of Christ book series. The series is available at bookstores in Louisville and Bardstown, Ky. The saga moves forward. A scholarly group of Sisters of Charity of Nazareth continue their research and writing as they narrate their community’s history over its last highly eventful century. All told, six volumes are projected as part of the celebration of the bicentennial of the Sisters. The second in the series has now come from the press under the keen authorship of Sisters Patricia Kelley and Rachel Willett. In the first volume of the series , the central figure was Mother Rose Meagher. This time the focus moves to her successor, Mother Mary Catherine Malone. Whereas the first volume had as its contextual and dramatic backdrop the First World War, this one has the Jazz Age and the Depression. Some of the more moving moments of this present account are those that evoke the Sisters who dealt with lean times and the way they sought to help those around them. Mother Mary Catherine emerges from these pages as a great-hearted soul with a special dedication to the education of the rural poor. As this volume begins in 1924, the community has 1,015 members. They staff three colleges, 14 academies, 60 parochial schools, six hospitals and six orphanages and a few other facilities. And this far-flung empire of charity extended to at least eight states. The challenge here was to provide a sense of the actual life experience of various Sisters across this wide canvas. For this, the authors depend heavily on the house annals that all branches of the community kept on a nearly daily basis. This approach yields some very colorful reportage: • When in 1924 anti-Catholicism flares in Shawnee, Ohio, several Catholic men for a time sit guard at the convent. • Sisters heading to teach at a summer school in the Kentucky mountains in 1925 walk two-and-a-half hours over rough terrain to reach their mission, crossing the wonderfully named Contrary Creek several times on the journey. • In 1931, in the depth of the Depression, a pastor in Dennison, Ohio tells his parishioners that there is no money to pay his salary, nor that of the Sisters. Each Sister at the time had been receiving 82 cents per day as salary. • Dinner is delayed at St. Thomas Orphanage in Louisville on March 4, 1933, so that the Sisters may listen to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s inaugural address over the radio. 9
Sisters of Charity of Nazareth • Vol. I 2012
Throughout the volume we meet largely unsung community members who were stalwart, each in her own way. Austina Romanowski, SCN, taught Polish/ English classes to children who idolized her as the Sister who jumped rope with the girls and played ball with the boys. Evangelista Malone, SCN, community treasurer during the era of this volume, was quite a taskmaster as new windows were being added to the Motherhouse church. She returned one window, for example, because the saint’s face was too severe. There are many other glimpses into the community’s life, including the spiritual exercises of a typical day, and the account of the few Sisters who taught in public rural schools. Even the benefactor Countess Spottiswood-Mackin, a Nazareth alumna, makes an appearance. The very readable text is rounded off by a serviceable index. Twenty-four pages of photographs reproduced with unusually high quality provide an additional immersion in the historical sensibility of the era. Special credit goes to designers Katy Keeslar and Brad Craig for their highly professional work.

In India, the first official gathering of the Nazareth Old Students Association (NOSA) Delhi Chapter took place in November 2011. SCNs Anne Marie Thayilchirayil, Ann George Mukalel, Reena Theruvankunnel, Bridget Kappalumakal, Stella Kaiparampatt and Nirmala Mulackal attended the heartwarming event at St. Xavier’s. The entrance and the hall were decorated with balloons and fresh red and white flowers - the colors of the school uniform. There were approximately 200 guests. Two Golden Jubilarians, both ex-principals and teachers of Nazareth Academy, Gaya, Sisters Anne Marie and Ann George were honored with bouquets and shawls. They in turn, shared a few words of thanks as did Cassilda Castell, SCN, who is credited with making NOSA – Delhi Chapter a reality. With some of the former students in attendance being recent graduates, they were happy to hear from Sisters Ann Palatty and Vijaya Chalil, both of whom are in Gaya. These two sent good wishes and regrets for their absence by phone. A delicious meal was part of the gathering and a special corner seemed to be a main attraction for several where litty was made and served with all the sauces.

SCN family member Wins Jeopardy Answer: He won the Jeopardy Kids edition as a seventh grader and donated a portion of his prize money to the SCNs.
Dillon’s mother, Rachel, thinks her son’s experience on his school’s Academic Team was very helpful. He was comfortable with using the buzzer and with having to be very quick with his answers.
Question: Who is Sister Rachel Willett’s great-nephew, Dillon McCormick?
Following the big win, Dillon was asked what his plans were for the prize money he received. “We’ve always taught Dillon and his brother Patrick to give back to Church or charity,” emphasizes Dillon’s Mom. So she was not surprised when before they had even returned home from Hollywood, Dillon knew what to do. “He said ‘you know what, I want to give to Nazareth,’” Rachel says.
In early 2010, 13-year-old , Dillon sat down in front of his computer and took an online Jeopardy quiz. He says he really didn’t think anything would come of it. He was actually one of 10,000 children to take the online test. “It was just a fun little thing,” he shares. To his surprise, later that year, in July, he received an email inviting him to an audition in Chicago, Illinois. He was one of 250 children selected to audition. Of those 250, 15 would be chosen for the show. At the audition, he was required to take a written test, participate in a mock Jeopardy game and was interviewed by the show’s producers.
Dillon describes how during the show, he was able to focus on the questions and nothing else and tried to pay no attention to the cameras, the audience, any distractions. And he took his chances.
“I clicked in if I thought I knew it, unless I had absolutely no clue. I buzzed in 90 percent of the time,” Dillon recounts. He Months and months went by without word says he had a slow start, but then started and Dillon assumed he was not chosen. But climbing back to his eventual victory. he was wrong. One day in February 2011, Dillon’s father, Gary, showed up at school His mother, Sister Rachel’s niece, teaches to give Dillon the news in person. He had high school social studies and history and been chosen for the show! His dad was so says she was thrilled to see the “American excited after receiving the phone call that History” category come up. Dillon also he went to Dillon’s school to tell him right excelled in the “cats” and “Southern away! “I was in disbelief,” Dillon recalls. Hemisphere” categories. Dillon previously won the school-wide Geography Bee and Dillon went to work, studying and did well with geography-related questions. preparing for the big day. He visited a website full of Jeopardy archival material from previous Kids’ Weeks. His father often quizzed him. And that March, as a seventh-grader, Dillon took his first-ever airplane ride to Hollywood, California.
As a baby, Dillon made his first trip to Nazareth, meeting his great-aunt Sister Rachel. Although Dillon doesn’t remember that first trip, he does remember attending and enjoying the Nazareth Picnic in the summer with his family. He says he always enjoys talking with Sister Rachel and her friends at Nazareth. So in August 2011, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth received a generous donation from Dillon with a handwritten note (see below). Sister Rachel is very proud of Dillon, and so pleased her great-nephew chose to donate some of his winnings to the SCNs.
Dillon’s mother, Rachel, says she felt like she was more nervous than her son. Adding the producers did a terrific job at keeping the contestants calm and relaxed.

A spark of creativity often takes on a life of its own. Such is the case with the creation of Journey Bead jewelry. Patsy O’Toole explains, “At lunch one day I noticed a beautiful necklace that my friend, Mary Boyce, was wearing. Mary explained that she bought it to support women in Uganda who made the beads out of recycled paper.” Patsy was fascinated, and one evening she searched online for how to do this. She had an old SCN Journey magazine close by and decided to try her hand at making paper beads. Stunned by the beauty, she shared it with others in the Office of Congregational Advancement and the group decided to make jewelry out of the recycled Journey magazines to sell at the Nazareth Picnic. The pages that tell the stories of the SCN ministries now serve as jewelry and the proceeds support those same ministries.
and giving the bracelet as a gift to someone is a sign of solidarity and support in whatever their journey might be. As a result, she and her friends sold over $1,000 in bracelets. “Journey” has become a theme for the family and a group of friends who will travel to Belize in February through the SCN Lay Mission Volunteer program to build a home for a family in need. Sisters at Nazareth are busy with various aspects of making journey beads. Teresa Rose Nabholz, SCN, who spent 40 years in India and six years in Belize, now works in the Advancement Office to support the missions. She spends much of her spare time rolling journey beads by hand. “I’ve spent so much of my life in the missions, in India and in Belize. Now that I’m older and can’t do the same thing anymore, at least I can do something to help the cause. It gives me great joy. I feel very connected in this way,” explains Sister Teresa Rose.
“We’re all connected. Thanks for being part of the journey!”
Over $2,000 was raised through sales of this jewelry for the Nazareth Picnic, and there was such enthusiasm for the beads that Patsy decided to form “JourneyCrafts” — an organization made up of a team of volunteers who would continue to create the jewelry with the promise that all proceeds will support the ministries of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. To date, the JourneyCrafts team has donated an additional $4,800 to the Congregation.
“The most exciting thing for me is how many people are involved in this project — people are so good and want to be part of something bigger than themselves. People really want to make a difference in our world, and this offers a small way to do that,” explains Patsy. Her sister, Mary, jumped in to help and made over 100 bracelets with beads that spell out “journey”. She showed them to friends and explained that everyone is on a journey —
SCNs Rosemarie Kirwan and Alice Teresa Wood have added their own skills to the effort by offering their crocheted and knitted afghans, hats and scarves for purchase. The website for JourneyCrafts is www.journeycrafts.org. It features a photo of the Journey team members. Jewelry and crafts can be purchased at this website. As the team heads into 2012, Patsy shares, who knows where this effort will lead. “What we do know is that for now, JourneyCrafts is making a difference. It’s a small world,” emphasizes Patsy. “We’re all connected. Thanks for being part of the journey!”

Mayan Sister Makes a Difference in Her Home Country The first young woman in her tiny Belizean village in the Toledo District to go to college as well as one of the first to go to high school, Higinia Bol, SCN, recalls how others responded to her when she dared to gently question her elders as to why girls weren’t encouraged to go to school beyond eighth grade. As a woman of fierce determination and powerful insights, linked in large part to her village roots, it’s that same determination that is fueling Sister Higinia in her latest ministry. She sees possibilities in everyone and is determined to use her personal experiences to empower women, many of whom remind her of where she might have been destined to land had she not found her voice. Sister Higinia is part of the grassroots nonprofit organization in Belize City, Belize, the Center for Community Resource Development. The nonprofit is reaching out to residents who live on the south side of Belize City and bringing about dramatic improvements. Described as being among the poorest areas of the city, Sister Higinia says the community is often marginalized by people living in other parts of the country who sometimes look down upon and make snap judgments about “that section.” She shares how the residents sometimes run into discrimination when applying for jobs based on their address. Indeed the south side of Belize is a community grappling with unemployment and an increase in crime. Residents often feel hopeless or unable to bring about change. However, 13

Sister Higinia speaks out about focusing on the many positives of that area including the strong sense of community and the way neighbors go out of their way to help out one another. And she says, that is what she hopes to inspire others to see…the possibilities. Sister Higinia and Rev. Brian Christopher, SJ, are determined to help the residents help themselves. The nonprofit’s goals are two-fold focusing on social and economic development. Sister Higinia has been meeting with residents asking them to identify the resources in the community that already exist and to tap into individual resources as well. It’s all about focusing on the positive and building on strengths says Sister Higinia, and changing the mind-set of folks who have lived on the south side for generations. A number of initiatives have already taken root including a program called “circles of conversation” involving a group of women that exhibit leadership skills and a history of being advocates. These women come together to brainstorm and plan, and in turn invite others to join them in making the community stronger and more forward thinking. In just a short period of time, several changes are taking place, like the back yard gardening program. Many residents in the south side are struggling
to have enough food. They don’t realize the possibilities of gardening in their own yards and neighborhoods, thinking that crops grow only in more rural settings. With guidance and instruction, these families are now learning how to grow their own food, generating a bounty of vegetables in order to feed their own families and others around them. A skills training program is also taking off. Folks who prepare traditional foods representative of the Belizean culture are working with experts in the hospitality and tourism industries to perfect their foods and to market these tasty treats to tourists. It is a win-win program as the women are engaged to help preserve Belize’s traditional foods, and at the same time, they earn an income doing something they love, using skills they already have but that just need to be further developed and honed. Sister Higinia beams as she talks about the program and early successes and how residents are learning to focus on the positive and are becoming more self-reliant. She is philosophical as she describes the change taking place, “We can make a difference in our own lives; we have the will power within ourselves. We don’t need anybody to solve our problems for us.”
Sister Higinia’s life is a testament to that mind-set. At a time when no young women were going on to high school, she and three friends convinced their parents to let them further their education, a sacrifice that meant they had to leave their parents and friends behind, because the school was some distance. Sister Higinia then dreamed of college and convinced her parents to let her explore possibilities, despite their trepidation about her going away to school. She went on to win a scholarship to a college in Arkansas and left Belize for the U.S. where she earned her degree. She continued to dream, this time of finding a way to help even larger groups of people. Sister Higinia found herself drawn to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. And now, after going to high school and college, making vows as a Sister, and having a fulfilling career teaching in Belize, Sister Higinia is in a new ministry, that of community development. She considers herself very blessed having been able to pursue an education and to travel many places, but Sister Higinia will be the first to say, she still she sees herself as the young woman from Toledo. She also says she sees herself in the women of the south side of Belize, adding she hopes others now believe … nothing is impossible.

Man Gets Old Life Back Nepali Man Regains Sense of Normalcy With Sisters Help
SCN family members are making a difference in the life of a Nepalese man who has lived much of his life with a severe facial disfiguration. After being attacked by a wild bear 30 years ago, the man went to many places seeking medical treatment to repair his scars. He had very little luck. Uncomfortable being out in public, the man would tie a band on his face to hide his deformity. Eventually he chose to confine himself to his house. One day, the man, Mr. Bahadur, met Cecilia Simick, SCN, during a mobile health clinic in a village of Dailekh District. She sent Mr. Bahadur to Kathmandu to meet with doctors. Doctors at Sushma Koirala Memorial Hospital felt they could help the attack victim with surgery. He stayed two months in the hospital. A prosthetic nose was created and fit to his face. Mr. Bahadur now has a new look and his old life back. Sister Cecilia shares that Mr. Bahadur is happy to see his face in the mirror and is excited to tell his story. He returned from medical treatment in October 2011 on the day of a special festival in Nepal, Laxmi Puja. Overjoyed, he shared, “I have received a special gift this year from God — my nose!” Mr. Bahadur thanked the Sisters for their help and support and could not contain his excitement at being able to go home to his village in Dailekh District where his wife, relatives, and neighbors were eagerly waiting to see him with his new nose and his new look.
Ministries Celebrate 25 Years Jubilee Celebration in Shahpur, India and Sangsay, Nepal Two Silver Jubilee celebrations took place in the Eastern Province in the fall and winter of 2011. Navjyoti Sisters along with the people of Shahpur celebrated 25 years of ministry in Muzaffarpur Diocese on Nov. 5. As part of the ritual, the first Sister in ministry there, Rose Plathottathil, SCN, together with the rest of the Sisters who had been missioned in Shahpur were escorted by the parishioners by the beating of the drums and processed from the parish, the beginning place of SCNs, to the present Navjyoti compound. During the procession, SCNs Marina Thazhathuveettil, Mary John Nadackal, Aruna Ekka, and Rose Plathottathil greeted the villagers and recalled their experiences, challenging living conditions, and the struggles and joys they each had encountered. Also recalled, the 2008 flood and how SCNs responded to the crisis and helped with recovery efforts. Eastern Province Provincial Sangeeta Ayithamattam, SCN, thanked the 23 SCNs present at the celebration and the many SCN family members who have ministered in Shahpur. The Bishop encouraged SCNs to continue their mission at Shahpur for the next 125 years! In Sangsay, where SCN family members also celebrated 25 years of ministry, SCNs Maria Palathingal, Vinaya Chalil, Philomina Hembrom, Cecilia Simick, and Angela Lepcha, were recognized. Most Rev. Bishop Stephen Lepcha of the Darjeeling Diocese celebrated the Jubilee Mass along with many other priests. Mass was followed by a meal and a cultural program. The Bishop thanked SCNs for their commitment to serve the people of the area regardless of caste, creed, or religion and encouraged the young people to do the same.

Nazareth Home Residents Create Art Nazareth Home is constantly looking for ways to stay connected in the community and has reached out to a program at the Kentucky Center for the Arts designed to partner artists with health care agencies. The award winning facility in Louisville, Ky., is the first and only nursing home in the Healing Arts Program. Residents were thrilled to participate in a variety of different programs in 2011. Those arts include: African drumming, story-telling, creative movement, dance, folk music, song writing, Celtic music, drama, stone carving, flamenco dance and hip-hop dance. A large scale visual art piece was also installed and unveiled at Nazareth Home. Created by artist, Patrice Will, and entitled “A Vision of Hope,” the work features a three-dimensional butterfly alighting on a rainbow backdrop made from hundreds of paint sticks painted by residents.

VCS Awards Employees Receive St. Vincent and St. Louise Award for Exemplary Service Vincentian Collaborative System President and CEO Raymond Washburn recently unveiled the St. Vincent and St. Louise Award and announced the first six employees earning the honor for their exemplary acts. The St. Vincent and St. Louise Award is given to a small number of employees who have done something significant that is an example of turning the mission into action, and the award recognizes them as “VIPs” a term coined by one of the employees to mean “Vincent in Practice.” The Sisters live by the motto “the love of Christ impels us” and employees are encouraged to carry out their work mindful of this legacy. The Vincentian mission is to serve others and to treat them as members of one’s own family. Employees, acting upon the mission, ensure the legacy and examples the Sisters set continues now and into the future. The St. Vincent and St. Louise Award will be given twice yearly during the week of St. Vincent Day (Sept. 27) and St. Louise Day (March 15). Employees who receive the award are recognized in several ways including receiving a VIP pin to wear with their name badge. They also receive a certificate of recognition and are recognized by their administrator during St. Vincent or St. Louise week. The names of the recipients are also displayed at each facility entrance and they are recognized in numerous articles and press releases.
Another employee helped a resident maintain dignity by providing personal assistance that was beyond the scope of the employee’s typical job – simply because it was the right thing to do. One employee visited a dying man to share with him what his role in her life had meant. When she arrived he was in a coma, unbeknownst to her. And although she didn’t know the family who welcomed her into his room, this employee knew that hearing is the last sense to be lost, so she held his hand, sat with him and talked. Another employee engaged her family and friends in providing a cookout for a group of residents for whom she works. They planned the picnic with the residents’ input, purchased the supplies, provided all the labor and cleaned up. The residents enjoyed a delightful summer afternoon thanks to her extra effort. And one employee developed such a strong relationship with a priest during his multiple stays at her workplace that, during his final days, he specifically requested her presence. She sat with him, even through the night while off duty, to ensure he was comfortable and at peace during his final hours. If you see an employee wearing the VIP pin, please make a point of talking with him or her. These employees have been recognized as leaders in fulfilling the Vincentian mission, following in the Sisters’ footsteps and in the footsteps of St. Vincent and St. Louise, in providing care above and beyond the everyday expectations and in treating others as if they were a member of their own family. Their stories help us carry on the SCN legacy and are shared as examples of the way the love of Christ can impel each of us.
The first six employees to be honored are Judy Back, Nurse Aide, Vincentian Regency; Lyndsey Green, Nurse Aide, Vincentian Regency; Larry Hayward, Maintenance, Vincentian Villa; Bert Palamone, LPN, Marian Manor; Louanne Plank, Director of Quality and Risk Management, Vincentian Collaborative System; and Linda Schoyer, Pastoral Care, Vincentian de Marillac. One employee worked with a resident who was experiencing severe dementia symptoms. He could not talk and didn’t seem to remember his wife. This employee helped him re-learn to speak his wife’s name and the words Merry Christmas. She practiced with him and purchased a recordable Christmas card so he could speak the words into the card and present it to his wife at Christmas as a reminder of their love.

France of the 21st century is, as it has always been, a beautiful and interesting country. It has a long history of painters, poets and writers. It is the country of the impressionist painters, and great writers such as Voltaire and Rousseau. The government has a minister for bread which is considered a national treasure. Also, there is great importance given to preserving the French language, another national treasure. 19
Sisters of Charity of Nazareth • Vol. I 2012
In addition to the churches, there are other signs of France’s Christian past. Towns in the countryside marked the end of their boundaries with a huge crucifix and many remain today. France gave the Catholic Church great saints. St. Vincent De Paul, Apostle of the Poor, is among the most well-known. There is an enormous face of Vincent made out of strips of metal on the outside wall of a building in Paris, from a distance it resembles a painting. Streets are named for him and places, important in his life, are marked with plaques. His work with the poor and unfortunate is not forgotten even after the passing of four centuries. Vincent was born at Pouy, Gascony in 1580. He was the third child of a peasant family comprised of four sons and two daughters. Vincent described the humble life of his own family with so much reverence that one knows that happiness as well as poverty filled his early life. He always had love and devotion for his parents and siblings. Vincent said of himself that in his early days he was a herder of animals. In the countryside where he lived, shepherd boys looked after their flocks from stilts. This perch allowed them a great view of the sheep. Today, there are pictures of the boys on stilts sold in the shops. Vincent decided early to become a priest. Unlike many of the priests in his time he received an excellent theological education in Southern France partly in Toulouse. A series of events led him to the de Gondi family. Vincent was employed as a tutor to their children and confessor to Madam de Gondi. She was a pious woman in charge of the spiritual well-being of the peasants in their vast estates. On one of the de Gondi’s estates at Folleville, he preached in the church, and began giving missions in the parishes on the estates. His need www.scnfamily.org
for help with the popular missions gave birth to a community of priests and brothers, the Congregation of the Mission. The community is viable today with many members all over the world. As a parish priest at Chatillon, Vincent told the congregation that someone had informed him that morning of a very sick family in need of food, clothes, everything imaginable to sustain life. After

Mass, Vincent gathered provisions and with two men made his way to the house of the sick family. Soon he met many people from church who heard his preaching, they were also on the way to the same house with necessities. That incident, many believe, changed Vincent’s life and his entire focus turned toward the poor.
Vincent knew that alone he could not alleviate the sufferings of the poor. He turned toward aristocratic ladies to assist him, the Ladies of Charity. Many were willing and did good things but some were not skilled and did not know how to help the poor and sick. A few even began to send their servants to assist the poor. Today, the Ladies of Charity are a vibrant group and continue their work with the poor. With the help of St. Louise De Marillac, Vincent founded the Daughters of Charity. They were mostly peasant young women and under the formation of Louise and Vincent grew in holiness. Today, their assistance to the poor is legendary throughout the world. At one time, every hospital in France was staffed by the Daughters of Charity. They became the largest community of women religious in the Church. Many years after Vincent’s death, the well-known St. Vincent de Paul Societies were founded by Frederic Ozonan whom the Church honors as a saint. These societies do much good for the poor and unfortunate. One day in 1646, Vincent, who gave frequent conferences to the Daughters, said to them: “In serving the poor, you serve Jesus Christ. O my daughters, how true that is—you serve Christ in the person of the poor. That is as true as the fact that we are here in this room.” No one on earth, not royalty, the wealthy, or any famous person captured the attention and devotion of Vincent de Paul as did the poor. In them, he found Jesus Christ. Sisters Elaine, Paula, Lucy, and Lilly returned from their pilgrimage renewed and inspired. They have been sharing their experience with members of the SCN family.

A Living Legacy JoAnn Kaelin Jones “At the end of life, we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by, ‘I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless and you took me in.’” Those words of Mother Teresa sum up the way that JoAnn Kaelin Jones wanted to be remembered. At the memorial celebration of her life, it is indeed the way that people spoke of her. JoAnn died on June 23, 2011, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, Miss. JoAnn was a member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth from 1958 until 1973. Her last teaching assignment in the Congregation was at St. Clara School in Yazoo City, Miss., in 1969. It was there that JoAnn’s commitment to working for social justice deepened, and she became active in the civil rights movement. She felt compelled to devote her life to serving the people of Mississippi. After leaving the SCN Congregation, she continued to serve as an educator in various capacities. JoAnn married Gwinn Jones, her “soul mate” in 1992. JoAnn said that he completed her life. He passed away in 1997. JoAnn was the librarian in Magnolia, Miss., from 1994 to 2006, when she retired. A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated in St. Vincent Church at Nazareth, Ky., on Aug. 20, 2011, and in Chatawa, Miss., on Sept. 17, 2011. During a time of sharing of memories at Nazareth following Mass, her sister, Mary Jane, read a letter that JoAnn wrote to her and her sister, Rita, prior to her death. She wrote, “I have tried to devote my life to those most in need, to those less fortunate, to the ‘underdog’, to those who have so much going against them. Therefore, I wish that my death and my will reflect these intense and soulfilled desires.”
I want my actions after death to be a legacy of my life’s principles and goals.
As a member of the SCN Legacy Society, JoAnn named the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth as a beneficiary in her will. In the letter read at Nazareth, JoAnn wrote, “I would like for you to disseminate the message of this will. The purpose of this would be to give others some ideas about the use of their money and material possessions after death – whether the estate is large or small. I wish to plant ‘seeds of sharing’ in the minds of others, certainly not to give any praise or credit to myself. I will be gone from this earth. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth gratefully acknowledge JoAnn’s generosity – during her lifetime and at the time of her death. Julie Driscoll, SCN, summed up the feeling of many when she shared, “At a time when others were uncertain where to stand on the racial question, JoAnn was clear and caring and she has remained a witness to many of us throughout her life. Her gentle presence and obvious commitment to justice remains a powerful legacy for us all.” 21

Helping Others to Help Themselves
It is one of the poorest areas of Pennsylvania, Fayette County, located in the western part of the state. The land is hilly and breathtaking, but the beauty is sometimes eclipsed by the struggle that so many families face, that of daily survival. In the area of Dunbar alone, where there are a little more than 1,200 people, 10 percent of the residents rely on food banks. Rendu Services is working to improve the lives of the impoverished and marginalized through a wide variety of social outreach programs. SCNs are part of this collaborative ministry along with Sisters from the Daughters of Charity and the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. The Sisters working at Rendu Services provide services in after-school activities and other outreach programs for children as well as a monthly food pantry distribution center. They also offer a nursing program and a mobile health clinic. These innovative programs are making a difference. A renovated RV which serves as a mobile health clinic visits 18 locations around the county. Often sitting behind the steering wheel of the RV, Alice O’Connell, SCN, who drives to key locations, like the post office to set up the clinic. There she administers a number of check ups including monitoring blood pressure and discussing healthy eating habits. Among the successes, the story of one young pregnant woman who was rushed to the delivery room after a routine checkup at the mobile health clinic van. She was not aware of her high blood pressure, discounting the discomfort as labor pains. The quick actions of SCN Sarah Geier, a nurse, sent the young woman to the hospital. The woman’s mother is forever grateful to Rendu Services saying the program
saved the life of her daughter and that of her unborn grandson. The woman is now a volunteer with Rendu Services. Another Sister in ministry in Western Pennsylvania, Ann Horvat, SCN, works at the St. Vincent DePaul store. She assists the economically challenged people of the community to create access to the basic needs of daily living. During these tough economic times, food pantries in the area are finding that they have less food to give families in need. Such is the case with the Rendu Services food pantry. In fact, the pantry was not able to sign up new families until January 2012. In an effort to highlight this plight, Sister Alice found a creative way to raise awareness and food donations, a zumbathon.
… So that in that moment of peace, that they may find Christ in their lives. Mary Francis Bassick, DC, is the administrator of Rendu Services. She lights up when talking about this ministry, “this program is not about bringing Christ to the poor, that Christ is already with them. It is Rendu Services that provides a moment of peace in someone’s life, whether it be a break for their children in an after-school program or peace of mind at a health screening. So that in that moment of peace, that they may find Christ in their lives.”

We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are
committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
Disaster Relief The Sisters at the SCN Motherhouse, Nazareth, Ky., spearheaded a fundraising effort to raise money for the volunteer program disaster relief trailer. Over $4,400 has been raised to date. Any donations above the goal of $3,800 are being used to buy tools and other supplies for the program. Disaster relief program team members hope to be able to have everything in place by April 2012 in order to respond to persons in need following natural disasters. If you would like to support this program, contact Luke Boiarski, SCN, at P.O. Box 9, Nazareth, Ky., 40048, (502) 348-1578 or lukescn@scnky.org.
