GREETINGS
Honourable Audley Shaw, CD, MP
For an organization to be well run and have happy customers, it must have good management and leadership to ensure that goods and services meet customer satisfaction. We must create an enabling environment to support increased compliance, in particular, with international quality standards. It is critical that we gear up to tackle the challenges that we face globally, and position ourselves for survival and sustainable growth. One way to gain competitive advantage is to see how best to use standards to successfully compete globally. The adherence to quality standards has become a precious commodity in today’s world of trade. Standards are seen as powerful tools to stimulate trade, overcome artificial trade barriers and help level the playing field, in a world where the influence and economic weight of emerging economies is shifting the balance of power. In many ways, standards enable businesses to become more competitive, facilitating trade and the development of industries. Therefore, we must ensure that standards become a part of our everyday life and, that as a as a region, we speak with one voice. It is in this context that the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries congratulates the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) in the hosting of the six-day Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT) General Assembly under the theme: “One Voice- Regionally Standardized, Globally Harmonized”. Today, with the Government’s increased focus on growth, the BSJ remains a constructive and relevant Agency of the Ministry, not only in fostering a growth-orientated business and investment climate, but also in promoting the use of standards as a tool for business growth. Therefore, I must commend the Bureau and staff for your continued commitment to standards, and indeed, to our country. Through all of this, we want to see more Jamaican businesses being able to generate and transform their businesses and produce high quality goods and services for both local and global markets, while using standards as an enabling tool. Once again, we congratulate the Bureau of Standards Jamaica on the hosting of this six-day General Assembly, and hope it will be a great success. Hon. Audley Shaw, CD, MP Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries
GREETINGS
Honourable Edmund Bartlett
It gives me great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the more than 100 delegates who are here in Jamaica for the 2018 Annual General Meetings of the Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT) and the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) National Workshop. We are proud to be playing host to this important gathering of business leaders and even more proud that it is being held in our second city – the beautiful Montego Bay. As Minister of Tourism, I recognize the importance of global and regional collaboration to improve the product. It is through the sharing of ideas that we become a more competitive and progressive nation. I therefore support your theme “One Voice – Regionally Standardized, Globally Harmonized,” which will see industry leaders strategizing ways in which the region can improve standards development, through collaboration and consensus, to successfully compete globally. I am sure the outcomes of these important discussions will benefit the future of our country and have global impact. The importance to any destination of hosting major events like the COPANT General Assembly is tremendous. As we continue to diversify our tourism product, my Ministry is seeking to position Jamaica as a premier Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) destination. With one of the largest meeting facilities in the Caribbean – the Montego Bay Convention Centre and a wide range of offerings for both business and leisure travellers, we are confident that we have the right product mix to make it happen. I encourage you to make the organized tours planned for you a priority. I am sure when you take the time to visit our beautiful attractions and get to know our warm and welcoming people, it will be truly unforgettable. Wherever you go, you will encounter a special brand of Jamaican hospitality. I have no doubt the island’s natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere will facilitate the exchange of ideas and the meeting of minds. I wish you a successful event and fruitful deliberations. Thank you for making it Jamaica and please come again soon. Hon. Edmund Bartlett, MP Minister of Tourism
GREETINGS
It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you all to this very important 2018 Pan American Standards Commission, (COPANT) General Assembly. This very important meeting takes place at a time when the need for consumer protection and the maintenance of standards is paramount, as we move toward engendering a sense of confidence and appreciation for the goods and services provided. The theme of your conference “One voice-Regionally Standardized, Globally Harmonized, is one which was properly thought out. Let me use this opportunity to thank the Bureau of Standards Jamaica and other members of the organizing committee for bringing all the stakeholders together in this fashion. This is truly a meeting of the minds, with one mission; to maintain standards and protect the interests of our consumers.
Councillor Homer Davis, JP
I extend a very special welcome to the delegates of this General Assembly. As Mayor of this city, I encourage you to take some time to enjoy the sights and scenes of our wonderful city, Montego Bay, the friendly city. I look forward to the deliberations which will take place during this conference and the far reaching decisions which will follow. I wish the Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT) General Assembly a tremendous success. Councillor Homer Davis, JP Mayor of Montego Bay
GREETINGS
Ladies, Gentlemen and Friends - Wah Gwaan! On behalf of the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ), it is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to the 2018 Annual General Meetings of the Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT) and the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) National Workshop on The Future of Healthcare. I am delighted to be hosting these meetings in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the Island’s second city – a virtual tourist mecca. This is an exciting event for us at the BSJ, because for many of you it is your first time to Jamaica - as it is my first time to host a COPANT General Assembly. So I say “Welcome Mon!” The theme for the 2018 meetings is “One Voice - Regionally Standardized, Globally Harmonized.” The central focus of our week is to strategize ways in which the region can improve standards development, through collaboration and consensus, to successfully compete globally.
Stephen Wedderburn Executive Director
The programme for COPANT’s week in Jamaica is multifaceted, promising interactive workshops and breakout sessions; bilateral meetings, networking possibilities; organized tours, exhibitions and fun. Our national workshop is proposed to explore the theme “The Future of Healthcare: Natural Products – Medicinal Ganja in Support of Good Health”, in pursuits of Sustainable Healthcare through standardization and innovation. The day will outline the role of standards work in developing the health industry with quality services, alternative products, new technologies and equipment and the emergence of information systems. The goal is to learn the good practices from across the world in order to strengthen our national and regional healthcare systems. To close the week, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Consumer Policy Committee (COPOLCO) is organizing a Regional Training Workshop on Consumer Engagement. We also invite and encourage all participants to attend as we explore the opportunities for greater partnership as one standardization community. The BSJ is counting on you to join us with one voice to share the importance of standards in shaping our world. I look forward to seeing you all in Jamaica land we love. Sincerely, Stephen Wedderburn Executive Director, Bureau of Standards Jamaica
