Statment of future living: 1. Increase in urbanisation, population and density. 2. Further global financial crisis. 3. Frequent conflict between community and authority. 4. Restriction on spontaneous event and increase on regulation. 5. Increase in corporate and mass trading system, decrease in traditional one to one social exchange. 6. Food shortage and price rises 7. Increase in dramtic climate 8. Fluxuation of people incareases The house of the future will.... 1, be infuse with the existing building. 2. be highly compact 3. have serval functions, trade, work and resting. 4. be able to adjust to fit the user’s needs. 5. continuously changes

In 2050, 7 out 10 of human population will be living in city and with currently 180,000 moves into city everyday globally, the term ubarnisation is common recgonised. As many Asia countries see great improvment in ecnonmic, many cities have huge increase in popultaion. A huge focus on urbanisation is in the rise, many of this city look towards the west as inspiration, resulting a architectural fusion of west and east. The fast pase development has ignored many curcial factor, such as local identiy and cultural background in favour of efficiency, conviency and economi benefit. The night market in Taiwan faces similar fate, as land price rises and governemnt regneration project become more freqent, many are ordered to relocate.

Lifting the tyopology from ground to air, adding extra trading and circulation space. Government will provide and own the structure, allowing disadvantage family to house business, allowing to have some sort of income. The inhabitant of the house can choose to use the space as its own trading site, or rent out the space for other vendors. When the family has enough money they can buy back the structure and converted them to their private balcony. Issues: Future land price increases, density increases in city.


Organic responce statement of future: 1.house of the future is parasiting to the exisitng structure. 2.house has organic behavior and responce to the future enviormental changes. Exisitng issues: sun light public space is an empty space? natural light. Turning parasite inside. Improving exisitng strucutre allowing it to breath more organically. Double layer, humidity, temperture n natural light. Interior scadffolding that maintain the existing slabs and structure.

Spontaneous is more indiviual choices that occur from indidvidual interest with less obvious trigger. These type of event survive and grow due to community support and interest. A self organising system arises that allow indidvidual to co-exsis with each other. Example- Night market

Plan of action:

1. Increase in urbanisation within asia countinent and urban desnsity will result the increase of land price, putting local small business out of league from corporate trading company and mass production system. Yet, the social interaction of trade, bespoke making and the experience of shopping will still be desirable and appreciated both socailly and economically.

First week: Focus on the first family needs - using bamboo to cook food To redesign the kitchen that allows private uses during the day, such as preparation. At night the kitchen will extend out and delpoy at the public space. Amplifying the smell and smoke to attract the public. The element of steam and fire will be address. Turning conventinal cooking equipement into unique and exciting apparatus; way to warming and cooling the building,

Exisitng public space will likely be bought over by commercial company or be redevelope as public infrastructure to improve city transportation and efficency, most devlopemnt will aim to meet the interest of coporate company and authority benefit. 3. City transporation and public movement will develope vertically, forming many layers of circulation above street level. 4. Many exisitng buildings will require renovation to fit into the new urban fabric both enviormentally and socially. 5. The rise in price of material will cause renewable consturction material to be highly desirable, such as bamboo. 6. The highly regulated and control city system will be challange by the spontaneous nature and free will of local community.

Community and users: The project will parasite an exisitng buidling of 3 small family in Taipei city, Taiwan. The first family on the first floor: The Dad has a traditional knowledge with Bamboo cooking technique that has pass down from many generation. The mother is his unreplaceable assistance in preparation and the cooking process. Their daughter goes to school in the morning but in the evening will help with the cleaning. The second family on the second floor: The wife is an energetic sales woman, who gathers afforadble goods from around the city and sales them at the night market. The husband is a construction worker that is out during the day. The thrid family on the thrid floor: The Dad is a carpenter that is skill in manipulate bamboo into toys. The mother is a positive woman that uses the creation from his husband to organise game at the night market, that always attracted the kids to play. Their son goes to school in the morning but helps out the business at night. These three family have a close relationship, they live, work and social under the same roof. Their indidvidual business attract varies cutomer, these mix function and service allow them to gain more profit.

Second week: Focus on the second family needs - using mechanic to improve selling and trade Way to display, communicate and sell. Innovate a living room that houses one’s collection to allow dramatic public display. Conveying belt system. Semi-transparent wall. Foldable wall. Expandablde storage. Thrid week: Focus on the thrid family needs - using bamboo to construct entertainment Innovate a bamboo workshop so at night it turns into a public gaming plc. Perhaps intergrate water theme by redesign washroom or shower. Mechanic that create sounds and splash. In conjuction with the design of individual family innovation each week, the structure system and detailing of the main bamboo sturcture plus the facade will also be addressed.


Bamboo cooking process Prepare sticky rice, by washing it and sock it in 8-10 hours. Choose a bamboo stem with two node at either end, wash it inside and out. Put the rice into the bamboo about 8/10 full and fill 1/10 wtih water. Enclose and tight the open end of bamboo with banana leaf. or clothe. Cook the bamboo by placing it above the fire at an incline angle around 40 degree or steam the whole thing for about 1 hour, when water have all evaporate rotate cook for slight longer to infuse the burn flavour of the bamboo into the rice.


Second and Third term proposal: DR

The project will take advantage of the first term indepth experiement and research in the materiality of bamboo and plywood. There are two ways to feed them into the DR, one is to make a 1:1 protoype of part of the building, and two is an indepth manual of bamboo construction technique.

House of the future • Site analysis/inspiration Taipei (Night market), city topography • Hypothesis

1. Fabrication of 1:1 component The bending plywood facade. The flower like plywood with the heat sensitive memory wire, will be intergrated with Adruino and sensors, allowing the facade to have a self-awarness and respond to change in heat and humidity. Technical Limitation: the memory wire requires time to cool down before the plywood can be return to its original shape, so the component will have difficulties to open and close in quick succession.

Breathing and cleaning solar chimney. This design has no physical prototype yet, but it will use a combination of material: latex, memory wire and air cleaning material, (which has not been decided yet). The device will be intergrated with Adruino and sensors, so it is able to adjust its volume through the contraction of latex by the memory wire, which will varies the air pressures allowing a control air circulation system for an enclosure. 2. Bamboo building manual: The parasiting nature of the project will be a technical challange. Here are some ares of exploration: • To safely cut and remove part of a building. • To correctly insert a bamboo sturcutre with the rightful connection and junction with the existing sturcture. • To resovle an efficient and stable bamboo structural system. • To assemble the bamboo structure with the correct procedure. The DR should be a bamboo consturction manual containing information on all the characteristic of this material, such as renewability, bending ability, 1:1 protoype, furniture crafting, toy making, and food cooking.

Building Site: A specific site will be choosen in Taipei, after an indepth analysis of the city, taking consideration of all the exisiting night markets. The location will be a spot that has potential of a highly fluxuated public transport and an overlooked neighbourhood that can be regnerated into a trading and interactive community. Propject Brief: The parasiting stradegdy will still be explore, the project will expand the scope by creating an neighbourhood
