PLAY IN PINK
For the sixth year, Tuskegee University’s baseball team will host its PINK OUT GAME to support and benefit the Joy to Life Foundation. Coach Reginald Hollis explained why. “We were looking for an impactful community service initiative, so we decided to do a game dedicated to a cause,” he said. “When we started researching who the game should benefit, I had breast cancer in mind, because I had a friend who went through that. And since the Joy to Life Foundation is based locally and its big event, the Walk of Life, happens during our season, it was a natural fit.”
Tuskegee plays its home games in Montgomery, so they already have strong ties to the community. Scheduling a themed game also helps the team garner the interest of students and encourages them to make the drive to Montgomery to root the boys on. Plus, the players love wearing pink. “They love putting a spin on their uniforms,” Hollis said. “And they were tired of the football team always getting to do pink since its season coincides with national breast cancer awareness month in October.”
The team sells t-shirts, and proceeds go to Joy to Life, and each player raises additional funds for the Foundation by asking for donations. THE TOTAL RAISED FROM ALL PAST GAMES COMBINED IS APPROACHING $30,000.
This year’s Pink Out game happens on April 6 at noon, when the Tuskegee Golden Tigers take on Lane College in a double-header. And ON WALK DAY, the players will be at the start line, participating as a team. LET’S GET TOGETHER ( FOR A REAL GOOD CAUSE )
Back by popular demand, SPREAD THE JOY is encouraging folks to head over to Biscuits Stadium on Friday, April 26 from 11am to 1pm to enjoy a delicious lunch from one of several local food trucks that will roll on over for the event, all while benefiting Joy to Life. Check out the Spread the Joy facebook page for details and food trucks participating. And don’t forget to don as much pink clothing as you’ve got to show your support.
