Laughter is a powerful, natural, and accessible tool for enhancing physical, mental, and emotional health. It transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, uniting people in joy and positivity. By embracing laughter in our daily lives, we can foster resilience, strengthen relationships, and create a more vibrant and fulfilling existence. So, go ahead, laugh out loud, and let the healing begin. Many of you are familiar with the recent California wildfires that destroyed the homes and livelihood of thousands of people in Los Angeles. Although I did not experience physical loss, I still feel the great sense of loss as I see the sadness in the eyes of not just those who suffered loss but those who are residents and either know someone who was affected or may just be feeling empathy and compassion. However the one thing that Ive seen come from this trajedy is the tremendous outpouring of LOVE to the victims, not just from our city but from other cities and states, communities, neighborhoods and churches. Relief is still ongoing to the families and Laughter is welcomed You will see an underlying theme in this issue of LOVE as we offer articles that help you with your mental health and how to love you; a meal recipe that recognizes those who are single this month with Valentines Day as the theme of the month; indepth management of your Finances and Relationships. and of course our Church Bloopers that will definitely make you LAUGH! About thirty years ago at a local cable television station in Los Angeles I was honored to make “A Spiritual Connection” with one of the most beautiful, inspiring and spiritually grounded couples on this side of Heaven, Phil and Brenda Nicholas! Divinely enough, my assignment for this issue of GI Magazine led me to reconnect with them. If you don’t know them, it’s only because the internet and social media wasn’t prevalent back then or because they took a sabbatical from their worldwide ministry to care for their son PJ, whose needs are as special as those who have been entrusted to care for him.
Jennifer, Phil and Brenda Nicholas
I will give you a glimpse of Phil and Brenda’s life and love and music, but their strategically prepared daughter, Jennifer Nicholas, will give you an in depth stare during the soon to be released documentary she produced titled, “A Love Like This: The Quietly Famous Life of Phil & Brenda Nicholas”. ‘Quietly Famous’ could not be more right and “A Love Like This” is something to write about during this month where we pause to gaze at love. “The sweethearts of Gospel Music” is the endearing phrase that announces their presence, love and unity over the spawn of their career which dates back to 1981. Phil and Brenda have either won or have been nominated for Grammy, Dove and Stellar Awards. And, they have also topped the Billboard charts. For the full 411 on who you may have missed out on, see Wikipedia to behold the magnificent work God has done through them over the years. Phil and Brenda Nicholas brought something fresh to Gospel Music: love songs centered on marriage, commitment, and partnership, all underpinned by the Word of God. These songs spoke directly to married couples, offering encouragement and affirming that marriage, when rooted in God, could thrive despite life’s challenges. In fact, their ”Marriage Enrichment” CD, “Our Love”, is like a melodious counseling session that will minister to helpovercome every situation that arises.“I Can’t Wait To See You” and “We’re Going to Make It” are two of their favorites and it is all you need to hear to make it! Download that from their website and you will thank me later…or thank them.

Critical Church winds blew as Phil and Brenda openly introduced affection and love through marriage in the center of pulpits, arenas and to the Gospel Music Industry at large, but they forged ahead with the blessings of the likes of Dr. Myles Monroe, Dr. A.R. Bernard, Dr. Tony Evans , Dr. E.V Hill, and other. When asked about how they balance marriage and their music ministry, Brenda, with great wisdom, said that it’s done very carefully. She said they have fun communicating and prioritizing and being sensitive to each other. “Faith is paramount in keeping our relationship strong. The trials are going to come and if you don't have the Word in you, if you do not rebuke and bind the enemy, he will overtake you. Missing one day of my prayer time is not an option so I go before the Lord regularly and that assures me that He will go before me to prepare my day and make it joyous and wonderful”. About love and marriage, Brenda says, “I keep God at the center of our relationship. You really need the Holy Spirit in your life, and you need to commune with the Lord through the Holy Spirit and anything that comes your way, you will know how to deal with it”. Phil and Brenda agreed about a lot, but “Can two walk together except they be agreed?”(Amos 3:3 KJV) Here is something Phil said that blessed my soul. He said, “We have a family prayer group where we all get together from 7 or 8 States across the country. We pray weekly and sometimes even more. It strengthens us because praying together is incredible … it is essential”. We can all quote prayer scriptures, the key, particularly in this climate, is to do it and do it together. One of the Biblical principles that have shaped their understanding of love and marriage is found in Philippians 2:3-4. It says, “ Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interest but each of you to the interest of the other”. Then of course, Phil mentioned the golden rule which is to do unto others as you would have others do unto you. When asked about the most memorable Valentine’s Day, Philsaid it was February 1979, a year after their marriage. I could hear the love in his voice as he vicariously went back to the shores of San Diego where they walked the Beach, enjoyed each other’s company, watched moviesand soaked in the beauty of California that paralleled their relationship. That day was so wonderful, they revisited the memory on their thirty fifth Wedding Anniversary.

Being intentional and taking time for each other keeps the romance alive in Phil and Brenda’s relationship. This month they celebrate forty-seven remarkable years of matrimony. “It’s not always work, work, work”, Phil says, “but because Brenda is so easy on the eyes, even work doesn’t seem like it”. Enjoying the life God gave them and walking in purpose and genuinely caring for others and each other was what stood out to me as I probed for the formula for this picturesque relationship. They do not take each other for granted and amidst the separate interests and shared responsibilities, they prioritize time for themselves. Besides impacting the world and being inducted into the 2024 Hall of Fame along with our Editor and Chief, Dr. Joyce Logan, they are currently serving as Praise and Worship Leaders at Southwest Church in Indian Wells, Ca, just outside of Palm Springs and under the leadership of Pastor Ricky Jenkins .I salute the sweethearts of Gospel Music who changed church culture in the early 80’s by focusing on the man and wife and the significance of that relationship. That had not happened before they came along. I’m overjoyed to have connected with the sweethearts of Gospel Music once again. Look them up on all social media platforms and be on the lookout for the documentary. They will bless your life.

Bryan Andrew Wilson Wilson was born in Danville, IL to a musical family that included his grandfather Tommy Davis, a quartet singer who was an early influence on blues great B.B. King. Wilson’s mother, Sheila sang with an R&B group before transitioning to a church singer. Wilson first hit the national scene at the age of ten years old when he led “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” with the Mississippi Children’s Choir for Malaco Records. The performance showcased an amazing vocal technique for a child with ear-piercing high notes. The mesmerizing track pushed the Mississippi Children’s Choir album, “A New Creation,” to sell over 100,000 units and over ten million streams. The success led to a recording contract with Malaco Records where Wilson recorded two Dove and Stellar Award nominated albums with production contributions from legends such as Kirk Franklin, John P. Kee, and Bishop Walter Hawkins. Bryan Andrew Wilson’s track “Turning Away” was first released in Spring 2014. It rose to No. 15 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart and No. 16 on Mediabase’s Gospel Airplay chart that summer. It did even better as a streaming success with over 5 million global streams – an incredible feat for an indie artist. His latest release “Turning Away” is the perfect flashback to fast-forward into a bright new future. February 2025

Apostle David Gilliam, Sr. Over the past few months, the music world has been captivated by a rising star on the Gospel Music Charts, Ambassador David Gilliam Sr. With a profound commitment to the Gospel and music ministry, his anointed voice has the power to stop listeners in their tracks. His recent release, the top 40 single “Be Glorified,” is gaining nationwide recognition for its pure glorification of God. Beyond his recording and music endeavors, Ambassador Gilliam is once again allowing his creative side to shine. This time, he steps into the lead role of the motion picture, The Prophet. Ambassador Gilliam shares, “This concept was inspired by some young people who saw me in this light. They contributed to the storyline, and I took it from there.” The Prophet tells the story of a young man who rises from obscurity, unaware of his prophetic gifts. Initially perceived as a troubled individual searching for his identity, he eventually encounters “The Most High.” This divine encounter reveals his latent gifts, transforming him into a superhero-like figure, appealing to both youth and seasoned believers. The narrative delves into his journey of self-discovery and understanding his calling. The movie is being filmed on location and through animation. Apostle Gilliam remarks, “We have been working on this movie for about six months. Initially, we didn’t foresee the movie developing into such a major production. It started as a simple idea, but it has now taken on a life of its own, motivating us to invest and bring this vision to reality.” Apostle Gilliam plays the leading role, with his character resembling his brother, youngest son, and a younger version of himself. Additional notable cast members will be announced in the coming weeks. Known globally as a Pastor, Minister, Singer, and Author, it comes as no surprise that Apostle Gilliam is adding actor to his list of credits. With over 35 years of experience in theater, including roles in college productions, show choirs, and bands, he has always embraced his creative side. “I remember what Pastor Myles Monroe said, ‘We should die empty,’ and I am committed to manifesting every gift and talent God has blessed me with before He comes.” The Prophet is set for release in late spring or early summer. “We are incredibly excited about the developments within the production and look forward to it being recognized as one of the most exciting projects emerging from the Petersburg area. We eagerly anticipate sharing this artistic work with the world.” Apostle Gilliam encourages everyone to look for the movie’s release everywhere. Music & The Kingdom The Right Song for the Right Time
By Dr. Percy Bady
Grace & Peace Kingdom Citizens! Before I dive into my topic, I need to pause for a moment and respectfully acknowledge the devastation that has hit the city of Los Angelos. I have many family, friends & business associates who have been greatly impacted by this tragedy. Our hearts & prayers go out to ALL who have been affected. In moments like this we are reminded that we not only trust God in the good, but we must also trust him in the bad. I pray God comforts all in this time of hopelessness, fear & uncertainty.
It is in times like these that I’m reminded of the importance of having the right song to encourage your heart…speak to your spirit & calm your fears. One of the most inspiring songs written said it like this “When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I” This is a line from Psalm 61:2 and was written by David when he was far from home and safety. He knew the value of the right song for the season he was in. He wrote many songs in the book of Psalms that spoke to the moment he was experiencing. We too must learn the value of the right song for the season we are in. See there are songs that feed your spirit & songs that feed your emotions. Let’s be clear, the two ARE NOT the same! See our emotions change based on what’s going on, what we see, hear & ultimately what we experience. Whereas our spirit (breath of God) is what connects us to the creator himself. The Bible asserts, “But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand” (Job 32:8) So it is your spirit that causes you to be hopeful & full of faith when calamity strikes…To reach for that which feeds your spirit & not your emotions. Why? Because your spirit man speaks to you & in return you speak to your emotions. This is why you sing “He Cares, “There Is Hope” “Not The Time, Not The Place” rather than sulk in a pond of discouraging lyrics or a beat that touches your emotions but leaves your spirit man empty. The right song at the right time is like the right medicine for what ails you. This is the ultimate proof of the power of a song! Songs can take you places in the spirit that causes you to forget about your current circumstances. They point you to the source of all things! God! February 2025

“Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.” 1 Chronicles 29:11 NIV This is why it is important in times of trouble to feed your spirit & not your emotions. Yes we respond to things emotionally, but it is our spirit that centers/anchors us in a way that reminds us who’s in control. We must remember the power of a song! And no matter what happens, don’t loose your song! In the day & time we are in, it is important to be careful what we feed our spirits. One influences your emotions & the other your spirit! Why am I addressing this? Because I’ve been in the music industry now 40 plus years! I’ve heard all kinds of songs. Even written all types of songs. But the ones that last, that speak in & outside of time, are the ones that point to the only hope we have, Jesus! You don’t believe songs are powerful? In the story of the fall of Jericho, the Levites were instructed to "gather" and "march around" the city with the Ark of the Covenant, blowing trumpets, as part of the strategy to conquer the city, where they would march around once a day for six days and then seven times on the seventh day, with a loud shout at the end of the seventh circuit causing the walls to fall down; this is described in Joshua 6:1-20. I believe the trumpets were not just blowing aimlessly! I believe there was a specific song that they played for the moment they were in! It will be very important in this dispensation of time to have a song! Remember how your parents or grandparents would walk through the house whether cooking or cleaning you could hear them singing or humming a song. That song created an atmosphere in the house that said God is here with me in my situation, my storm, my trials etc. It also spoke to where their faith rested. They understood the power of the right song for their season.

By now it should be clear what my article subject matter is. “The Right Song for The Right Time” We’ve heard it said that “timing is everything”… So what is timing? Timing is the skill or action of judging the right moment in a situation or activity at which to do something. See if there is a right time, there’s also a wrong time! Likewise if there is a right song, there is a wrong song. In the days ahead we will need to understand the importance of having a timely song! A song that encourages me to hold on when I’m trying to hang , keep the faith when my faith is being tested, rejoice in trouble knowing that the end result is victory. Blessings Dr B!

Happy Valentines Day to You: Embracing God's Love By Loving Yourself
Greetings Beloved- I am excited to share a much-needed message on self-love this month. As followers of Christ, we often celebrate His boundless love for us through acts of worship, but many of us struggle to embrace His great love for us in how we treat ourselves. I am often shocked and deeply saddened by how many believers struggle to embrace self-grace and self-love. Churches usually focus on the love of God for humanity and the command to love others; however, little attention is given to the importance of loving oneself. This imbalance can leave Christians feeling unsure about how self-love fits within their faith. But here’s the truth: self-love is not selfish, it’s sacred. It is an essential part of living out the commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself” Self-love is considered one of the optimal forms of mental and emotional self-care because when you treat yourself with grace, love, and compassion, you create space for healing, resilience, and personal growth. Selflove is considered one of the optimal forms of mental and emotional self-care because when you treat yourself with grace, love, and compassion, you create space for healing, resilience, and personal growth (Mark 12:31). Jesus commands believers to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39), implying that self-love is not only permissible but foundational to loving others. When this teaching is overlooked, Christians may struggle with the idea of selfaffirmation, self-love, self-forgiveness, and self -grace. In a world that often distorts the meaning of self-love, it’s essential to root our understanding in God’s truth. Self-love is far from being selfish or prideful, true selflove aligns with the divine design of honoring the body, mind, and spirit that God has entrusted to us. The Bible reminds us, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). This command assumes that we understand the value of loving ourselves—not as an act of vanity, but as an act of stewardship. Loving ourselves begins with recognizing that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Each of us is crafted by the Creator, a masterpiece in His image.

Self-love in the Christian context isn’t about elevating ourselves above others, nor is it about seeking validation from the world. It’s about caring for the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), tending to our spiritual, emotional, and physical needs so that we can serve God and others more effectively. Self-love is considered one of the optimal forms of mental and emotional self-care because when you treat yourself with grace, love, and compassion, you create space for healing, resilience, and personal growth. So how do we practice godly self-love and self-compassion? Here are a few things you can begin doing today
1. Forgive Yourself Acknowledge mistakes without harsh judgment or self-condemnation. Let go of guilt and shame by remembering that God's grace covers all sins (1 John 1:9). Reflect on Scriptures like 2 Corinthians 12:9 and Lamentations 3:22-23, which affirm that God's grace is sufficient, and His mercies are new every morning. 2. Accept Imperfection Embrace the reality that no one is perfect, and that failure is part of the human experience. Trusting that God's strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). 3. Speaking Kindly to Yourself Replace negative self-talk with words of encouragement and truth. Use affirmations rooted in biblical truth, such as “I am loved, forgiven, and made new in Christ.” Begin viewing yourself through the lens of God’s love and mercy.

4. Allowing Space for Growth Growth takes time and setbacks are part of the journey. Celebrate progress instead of demanding perfection. View mistakes as opportunities to learn, not as reflections of your worth. There is no such thing as “perfection”, so stop reaching for the unattainable. Strive to be all that God has called you to be. Celebrate every millimeter of growth toward that goal. 5. Embrace Rest and Self-Care/Set Boundaries Allow yourself to pause and recharge without guilt, remembering that even Jesus took time away to rest and pray (Mark 6:31). Protect your time and energy by saying no to things that hinder your spiritual growth. Jesus Himself withdrew to quiet places to pray (Luke 5:16)—we should follow His example. 6. Pursue Your God-Given Purpose Self-love flourishes when we walk in our calling. God has equipped each of us with unique gifts to fulfill His plans (Ephesians 2:10). Embrace who you are and the mission He has set before you. Beloved, self-love, and self-grace are so important because God continuously shows us infinite grace, forgiving us and loving us despite our flaws (Ephesians 2:89). Practicing self-love is a way of aligning with His example. When you show yourself love, you are better equipped to extend grace and love to others, fostering healthier and more compassionate relationships. As Valentine’s Day approaches, a season so often focused on external love, what if you turned some of that affection inward? What if, instead of searching for love outside yourself, you chose to root yourself in God’s love and allow it to transform the way you see yourself? This will truly be a Happy Love Day!

You Can Not Love Without Giving
By Bishop Susie Jones
When one has a love for history it is important to be aware or have knowledge in your respective field of those that came before you. I always pride myself in being a lifelong student. It is imperative to constantly educate ourselves with the historical accomplishments of our predecessors. Ecclesiastes 1:9 reminds us that there is nothing new under the sun, what we're doing now has been done before. It was just a different era of time. There are women among us and women who came way before us whose Ministry helped usher in progress and opportunities that opened up the way for all. They graced the forefront and even pioneered other avenues and platforms that go beyond traditional ministry as we know it. Here are just few I'd like to highlight because there is no way we could name all:
Antoinette Brown Blackwell was noted as the first woman in the 1800's to be ordained as a minister in the United States. She worked in fighting for antislavery, anti-poverty and broke barriers for womens’ rights. Antoinette Brown Blackwell Jarena Lee born in 1783 was said to be the first woman Pastor in the Afican Methodist Episcopal Church. Jarena Lee
Dr. Prathia Laura Ann Hall one of our Theologians and who was also active in the Civil Rights Movement. Hall was one of the first women ordained in the American Baptist Association. Hall joined the faculty at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, eventually becoming dean of African American studies, and director of the school's Harriet Miller Women's Center Dr. Prathia Laura Ann Hall February 2025

Bishop Vashti McKenzie, is the first woman to be elected Bishop in the AME denomination now retired. Currently she serves as President and General Secretary of the National Council of Churches.
Pastor Valerie Daniels Carter, Pastor of Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God In Christ, Milwaukee, WI. She is not only an outstanding leader in the religious community but a force to be reckoned with in the Business world. Her portfolio includes ownership of a Pizza Hut, Burger Kings, Aunt Anne's, Haagen Daz, she also sits on the Board of the NFL Green Bay Packers, a minority ownership stake in the Milwaukee Bucks NBA Team and so much more.
There's a saying that; You can give without loving, but you cannot LOVE without giving.
Bishop Susie Jones is GI’s Editor for Women In The Pulpit. She serves as the Senior Pastor of Yahweh's House Of Prayer and Worship in the city of Los Angeles, CA. “Love: A word that comes and goes but few people really know what it means to really love somebody!!!” Opening line to Kirk Franklin’s song What It Really Means to LOVE! This month we are all focusing on LOVE!!! February is considered and dubbed the “love month” ironically, while my birthday is in February I truly do not share the sentiments or enthusiasm that surrounds it! I celebrate my born day but avoid the love day. I honestly make the conscious effort to love on my family and friends yearround. So much emphasis is put on the holiday, Valentine’s Day, overshadowing everything that no consideration is given to the individuals that do not have someone to celebrate that one day with. It’s disheartening seeing the decorations going up the day after Christmas and thrown into your face every time you go into the stores. While love is a beautiful thing, I want to acknowledge the voices of those who yearn for a special connection or simply a friendly presence to share the day with. This is the perspective of many that ache for love from someone special or just having a friendly person to celebrate the day with. There are many that this day brings feelings of loneliness instead of joy. Churches often host events celebrating couples, but no consideration is given to the singles. Who are wistfully looking at the festivities and hope that next year they will get to attend with their significant other. I want you to know that even though you may be dateless this month, you are NOT ALONE!!!Not being super deep but God has you and me in His arms, and he loves us beyond measures! I want you to take this month that I don’t usually celebrate nothing but my birthday and make this month and valentines all about YOU!!! You truly are VALUED and MATTER!!! Never allow the standards of others to make you feel insufficient. Your day will come and hopefully soon you’ll celebrate love with your special one Here is a special meal that is perfect for you, whether you’re dining solo or sharing with someone you cherish: Stuffed Blackened Catfish. I first made this dish a few years ago and it immediately became a favorite. Yes, I shared it with others, and they loved it too! February 2025

Once the dish is ready, dress up, light some candles, play some special music and plate it as if you’re dining like royalty. This meal is guaranteed to impress, delight, and win over that special person or whoever you make it for. Even if its just for you, you will definitely feel like a special person once you prepare this meal. Remember, love is as love does and I promise you that this meal will leave both you and your guest feeling cherished. Remember Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. Enjoy the month of love and don’t forget to celebrate YOU!!!

Love Is A Little Give And Take By Sheilah Belle Have you ever been in love? I mean real love! Have you ever felt love? I mean real love? When I initially think about love, I can’t help but think about the love of God, and how he sent his only begotten son to die on the cross for you and me. Hear me! He sent HIS ONLY SON, to die for you and me! What a sacrifice to make! What a demonstration of unselfish love. I remember, being in the delivery room with my cousin. She was about to give birth to her son. When he arrived, with her husband by her side and me standing by her on the other side, she looked at her new born baby, then looked at me and said, “Just think, God loves us more than we love that little baby.” I was speechless! In life, many examples of love will fall along your path, and as we all get older, we will understand that there are so many variations of love. There is the love you give and there is the love you receive. There is the love of understanding and there is the love of forgiveness. There is also the love of wanting to hold on and then there is the love of letting go. Now imagine, meeting someone, then you both decide to take a walk around a park and out of nowhere, love decided to show up. No one planned this, it just happened. Before you realized it, feelings and emotions were blaring. Over the next few weeks, texting, FaceTimeing and spending time together had become your highlight for the day. As a woman, your emotions have started to push your intellect to the side. You have started to reach out and have made yourself accessible. As a man, you are seeing this woman as having her act together, but it doesn’t take long for the inconsistent communication to start, emotional unreadiness to begin and finally willing to have THAT conversation. It’s the conversation that the woman wants to have with the man to ask, “So what are we doing or trying to do,” as she seeks clarity. February 2025
38
Unfortunately, in this case the guy says a lot and finally gives clarity when he says, “I’m not ready for a relationship.” However, what the woman hears is, “I’m not ready for a relationship yet, but I think I can change his opinion on that if we keep spending time together and stay connected.” Six months later, she starts to realize, he still isn’t ready for a relationship. He even says, “I’ve been trying to tell you, I’m not ready for a relationship, but you haven’t been hearing me.” Now, here’s the deal, she really thought she had been hearing him, however while hearing him speak and share with her how he was feeling, she was more so focused on what she wanted, and not what he wanted. He wanted to go slow, as he mentioned his life was full and busy. While she paid attention to his busy schedule, from work, family, weekend friends, the club and whatever else, every now and then common sense, would knock on her front door and sometimes even ring the door bell, but she kept slamming it shut, with the belief that, maybe a relationship was still possible. Even while she would text and get no response, call and might get a pick up, and he would even explain, “I just have a lot on my plate and just don’t have anything else to give, her hopes stayed alive. They finally had another real conversation, and she finally heard him. She heard him say, “While you may want to be my woman, my lover and my wife, and I may want to be your man, lover and even your husband more than you may want me, but right now is just not a good time. I have too much going on!” Here’s where the LOVE comes back in.For her, she finally realized that she had to accept what he was saying. While deep down inside, she realized she fell in something, possibly love with this man, BUT if she was really going to give this relationship a chance, she was going to have to step back, and allow this man to do what he had to do with his own life. At the same time, she also had to love herself enough, to realize that God was giving her some direction with her own life. If this man truly loves her he won’t let her get too far away. However, she also realized, that as long as she is holding on to something or someone who is not holding on to her, she needed to let it, and that she needed to love herself enough to do just that. Love, truly it is a little give and take, but it may not always playout how you think. Stay tune for Relationship #4. Connect with Sheilah Belle “The Belle” on IG @thebellereport

How to U se Financ ial Stateme nts as a Modern Tool to K now the State of Your Business and Financia l Affairs
In this article, we will expand on the article written in the previous issue about "Getting Our Financial House in Order." Knowing what's going on in our business affairs is essential, including identifying potential opportunities, threats, or risks that may be headed our way. We should be sensitive to what's coming down the pipeline and how it could impact our business. We should also have resources that are easily accessible, such as lines of credit, savings accounts, investments, or accounts receivables. We should know how close we are to utilizing the last of our resources. We should also make sure the basic provisions that God has given us are being taken care of and are intact and wellguarded. One way to do this is by regularly monitoring our financial statements. This will help us better estimate what can be expected in the coming months (by also adding budgeting and forecasting to the mix). Your paragraph text
Proverbs 27:23-27 reminds us to know the state of our flocks and tend to our herds. Many companies experience peaks and valleys during different seasons of their business venture. When monitoring our flock, we may see them as assets one day, but we may consider them for dinner the next day. This verse warns us about monitoring our basic provisions that will keep us afloat during our leanest times. We must ensure that we always have enough assets or access to resources because we never know when we may have to convert (liquidate) some of our assets to cash during those lean seasons. Let’s discuss the three most important financial reports that business owners should be familiar with and how they can help us understand the state of our affairs. The Most Widely Used Financial Reports The most widely used financial reports across multiple industries include the Profit and Loss Statement, also called the Income Statement or the P&L, the Balance Sheet, also known as the Statement of Financial Position and the Statement of Cash Flows. These reports are referred to as financial statements and each provides different information and serves a distinct purpose, although they are interconnected. Understanding them makes it easier to monitor the state of your business affairs February 2025

Financial statements indicate where our businesses are headed and suggest when we should steer them in a different direction to avoid major pitfalls. We'll discuss each statement separately in more detail below. Profit and Loss Statement (Income Statement) The Profit and Loss Statement reports revenues, cost of goods sold, and expenses. It tells business owners if their business is profitable during a specific timeframe. It allows business owners to identify financial trends, such as whether there’s a spike or a dip in sales. The P&L is organized by reporting revenues first, followed by the cost of goods sold (which is deducted from the revenues). The remaining amount is called the gross profit margin. Next is the general and administrative (G&A) expense section, that includes expenses such as rent, office supplies, staff, etc. The G&A expenses are deducted from the gross profits, resulting in a remaining net (operating) profit or loss. The Balance Sheet (Statement of Financial Position) The Balance Sheet shows business owners their company's financial position at a specific time (such as on December 31, 2024). It shows business owners the net value of what they own (their net assets, including depreciation), their total debt (their combined liabilities), and their total equity, (which is the business's net worth). The Balance Sheet equation consists of total assets equals total liabilities plus the owner's equity. It allows lenders, investors, and potential partners to evaluate a company's creditworthiness and key ratios such as debt to equity, liquidity, and other ratios. The Statement of Cash Flows The Statement of Cash Flows tracks the cash flow that goes in and out of a business. It reports where the cash is coming from and how it's spent. It can be somewhat misleading though, because the cash inflows do not necessarily represent sales. Sales impact cash differently depending on each customer. Some payments may be received when the sale occurs, whereas other payments may not be received for up to 30 – 90 days. (This uncollected cash is reported on the balance sheet as an account receivable). The cash flows are organized by operating, investing, financing, and dividend payout distribution activities. To conclude, business owners should regularly monitor their financial statements to assess the state of their affairs. Stay tuned to our next issue, where we will address more accounting tips for entrepreneurs. February 2025
