A MESSAGE FROM THE CURATOR
When I looked for the artists who could be a part of the 2023 American Dance Platform, it was important to include artists with a powerful vision and distinct choreographic voice.
The three companies that have been selected are very different, but all three showcase passionate movement and a virtuosity that willl fit beautifully on The Joyce stage.
I remember the first time EVIDENCE, A Dance Company was on The Joyce stage over 20 years ago. It was a momumental moment for us and I hope that these three companies will benefit from the exposure that The Platform provides.
I thank Aaron Mattocks, Danni Gee, Linda Shelton, and The Joyce Theater Foundation for their support and trust in my role as curator this season. I look forward to an amazing week for these incredible artists who will bless the stage as a part of the American Dance Platform.

ARTIST STATEMENT
The arts are essential to the socio-economic development of underserved minority groups such as African-Americans, Latinx Americans, and the LGBTQ+ community. Dance is an especially useful tool for learning about human connection and interpersonal relationships. What we know about underground street dance styles such as: Vogue, Hip-hop, and House is that they parallel and are rooted in the traditional and tribal dances of the African diaspora and all are a reflection of our need to be accepted and be celebrated. The idea of chosen families is one that is common among those with alternative lifestyles: Artists, people of color, people of a trans experience, etc. These people, more often the youth, are not welcomed and even threatened by the communities they are born into. This will lead them on a lifetime search for acceptance.
In the two short years since our inception, Les Ballet Afrik has accomplished more than we could've imagined: Performances at Gibney Dance and Harlem Stage; residencies and commissioned work by Works & Process; two complete, full-length evening shows ready for touring, just to name a few. Perhaps our biggest accomplishment, however, is our growth as a family. Our company is composed of people with very diverse backgrounds that have two things in common: A love of dance and the need for community. Each company member has had a personal struggle that dance has helped them overcome, and Les Ballet Afrik has become a safe space for them to continue that personal development. No one understands this more than our director Omari Wiles. Born in Senegal, he knows the importance of being rooted in family and the grounding that brings as an individual. As a legend in the underground ballroom scene and a founding father of the House of Oricci, he has firsthand experience with how that grounding can be threatened and how the underground and ballroom scenes play a significant role in restoring the foundation of community and acceptance for so many.
ABOUT LES BALLET AFRIK
Les Ballet Afrik is a multi-cultural dance company that explores the masculine and feminine energies within different dance forms. Our mission is to bridge the gap between the progressive LGBTQ community and the traditions of the Diaspora. We hope to bring awareness to the Black and Latino experience within the ballroom scene and put a focus on the importance of community and connection to ancestry. Rooted in Traditional African, House, Vogue, and Latin movement, and under the direction of legendary Omari "Oricci" Wiles, Les Ballet Afrik has pioneered a new movement style called "Afrikfusion," a unique blend of dance and movement unlike anything that's ever been done before.
Omari Wiles, Artistic Director Shireen Rahimi, Company Manager | Alora Martinez, Rehearsal AssistantOUSMANE "OMARI" WILES (Artistic Director/Choreographer) is an African American West African and Vogue dancer. Wiles is best know as legendary Omari NiNa Oricci, founder of The House of Nina Oricci [est. OCT. 2019] and Creative Director of LES BALLET AFRIK dance company. Wiles was born in West Africa, Senegal. He began his training in West African dance at the age of six years old under the tutelage of his mother and father who owned a dance company. Wiles joined his mother [Marie Basse Wiles] and father [BaBa Olukose Anthony Wiles] and became the assistant director of the family company, The Maimouna Ketia School of African Dance. Working with master African dancers, Ousmane evolved the skills needed to teach the art of traditional African dance. Venturing further into the world of dance, Wiles found himself learning, training, and falling in love with other styles such as Hip-Hop, House, Modern, Jazz, and Vogue. Through his involvement with the ballroom scene, his love and passion for Vogue (dance) grew. As his notoriety in the ballroom scene grew, it began to grow outside of the ballroom scene as well. Wiles has had the opportunity to work with many artists, featuring his range of dancing. His choreography has been featured with Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, John Legend, Jidenna, and Rashaad Newsome and he has worked as a featured dancer, showcasing Afrobeats [with Goldlink, Jidenna, Maleek Berry, and Wunmi], West African dance [with Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, and Forces], and Vogue [with Rashaad Newsome, Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Jennifer Hudson]. Wiles has been published in Dance Magazine's "Top 25 to Watch," Korean Vogue, British Vogue in a spread featuring Naomi Campbell, The Observer, Dance Mogul Magazine, and The New York Times. Wiles also appeared with his house [the house of Nina Oricci] as a contestant on Legendary Season 2 on HBOMax. Wiles is now evolving his own style of dance with his company LES BALLET AFRIK, blending African, Vogue, Modern, and House as one. He and his company have performed at The Joyce Theater, the Guggenheim, and the New York Metropolitan Museum.

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
VISION STATEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
To achieve this, we will:
• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives;
• Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;
• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;
• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
